I had her for intro and methods. Pretty cool activities. Sometimes alot of notes, but I like her material. I had methods once before and dropped it because I was so lost. She makes it easier. She's not hot like the first person said, but she could be!
She makes this class really easy! She gives you all the information you need for the tests. If you come to class and take notes, you don't even have to buy the book!
Great class! Loved it so much I'm switching my minor. Lots of notes, but she has a good sense of humor, so showing up is worth it.
Wonderful. Had great discussions and insights. Made me want to switch my minor. She empowered me to change things that I don't like, and the world will be a better place because of her.
She gave lots of notes, but all you need to study is the notes for the tests. She is very interesting and helpful. I'd def. take her again!
A wonderful instructor. She is very nice and very friendly. I would recommend her to anyone. Material is relevant and clear, grading is fair and simple.
good teaching skills. knows how to listen to her students. very organized
Great teacher!
Jen Hatten is an awesome, hot professor! She is so knowledgeable and very open with students' opinions. Definitely, she is worth taking, and a great professor.
Great teacher (cute)! Sparks discussion and debate, but keep things civilly moderated. Very nice and always willing to help out a student.
great teacher! go to class and earn points..easy enough. if its a 3 hour class she will let u out early but your hand will be tired, she average 3-5 page a notes a class. test based off notes..very easy to follow. just attend the class , study the notes and do the work you will get an A if its all g
had professor at wayne, not eastern. made fatphobic and hetereo**** remarks. talked about her kids and husband all the time.
Her classes are easy. You just have to show up and take the notes. She is helpful and tries to make things interesting.
It seems that she makes up everything she says if its not about her kids or husband. But its a easy class.
SHOW UP TO CLASS!! you cant really miss it, especially if you dont know anyone that you can get notes from. over all fairly easy one MAJOR paper and two exams..not too bad.
Good teacher. She really cares about what she does and she tells it the way she is. Good class.
I've had her for two classes. Mrs. Hatten kicks ass. As long as you goto class (which you should be doing), you will do just fine. She doesn't expect the world from you but does expect you to hold your own. Highly recommended.
I switched majors because of her. I talk about her class all the time to my friends. She uses real life examples and then has us do the same. She pushes critical thinking. Yeah, you come to class for the notes but then you leave with much more than that. Have her for research methods in the fall. Mrs. Hatten has good ratings for that class.
AWSOME TEACHER! Sure the 2 tests may be a little challenging, but if you show up to class and take the notes its just review after that. Easy class yet I learned ALOT!!!! Highly recomended! If I didn't already have a major I may consider changing it! Take her, you won't regret it!
This is a fairly easy course if you attend class, and take notes. You can also pass easily w/out buying the book. This instructor is good at her job and delivering the info. I recommend this instructor.
This is an EXCELLENT prof. She is a good lecturer and can make anything interesting. You need to attend class but it won't be one that you dread going to. The exams can be a little hard so you do need to study for an A. I have taken her for 3 of my classes and have passed every one of them with an A/B.
Great teacher! take her! i did not think i would be interested in this class, but she made it interesting. Go to class, you'll enjoy it. Tests were not the easiest. you will learn alot.
A wonderful example of how one can make education fun and intersting. An excellent class and an excellent instructor. Energetic, understanding and flexible.
Take the class dont buy the book i got an A without it. One the best teachers.
Loved her! She is a great prof. She is really smart and her lectures are very interesting. Definetly take her! Her tests are easy if you take notes, and her paper wasn't that bad.
Students like her, I liked her, the other faculty likes her, over all personality.. very nice. She is sensitive to the feelings of her students. Knows the material and conveys it well. Her assignments are fun and informative.
the exams are drawn from an exorbitant amount of reading from the terxt and there is no study guide to direct you. the notes are incomprehensible because the whole time your writing is when she is actually giving the lecture. she has great energy, but there are only a couple of chances to get a decent grade if you didnt do so well on an exam.
I don't think the poster below me had the same prof. Her exams are only worth 1/2 your grade so even if you mess up on 1 you have plenty of chances to catch up. Everyone in the class should have a A+ in a quarter of the class. She's great and the exams are taken straight from the notes. It's really a good class. Don't get confused by last comment.
I have had professor Hatten-Flisher for 3 classes now and I have to say that she is the best professor in the SAC department.
Love her! She is such a great professor. She makes all the material seem so interesting and her class is actually fun. Don't buy the book because all of her material from the tests come straight from her notes. If you show up to class and take the notes you should do pretty well. She's super funny and cool too. Take this class!
Taken her 3 times and I LOOOVVE her. Best in the Dept. Pop Culture class was amazing, fun, and informative. Learned a lot. Her teaching style changes to match the subject. I find this interesting because she teaches each style with same passion. Really cares about her students.
She is the best prof i have had at emu. i highly recommend her! she's hilarious and tells lots of stories too.
Jennifer is a sweet lady. She would be a lot of fun, if she wasn't stuck teaching Methods of Soc Research. She doesn't like the topic, so she lectures from lengthy slides, and you scramble to take notes. Don't miss a class! There are no study guides, so tests are hard. But, her big assignment is only 10 pages, instead of 20 pages like other profs.
all in all not a bad class. Attendance was randomly taken by several in class assignments. Told us not to buy the book. 3 exams all multiple choice except one on the book Nickel and Dimed. Which was a mix but pretty easy. Does not give out notes. you take notes off of slides which is a pain and boring. Says um and ah a lot!
Jen was really fun to have. Class was very straight-forward. You took notes off an overhead, didn't have to buy the book and only had to read a short novel. She does easy activities to bring some liveliness to class. Overall its an easy and fun class to take. She was def one of my favorite professors so far at EMU!!
she is a great teacher!!! she makes lectures very interesting. doesn't use the soc book AT ALL but you HAVE to read the nickel and dime book.. attendance is not mandatory but there are a few in class assignments she gives out randomly.. they are REALLY easy. tests are okay if you study.. i really enjoyed her class!
I felt like her opinions were being pushed on me. I didn't like this class, because Sociology is boring to me, but I guess it is good otherwise. The tests are based on taking notes off of her slides during class lectures. She doesn't make you read the book at all, but if you don't attend class you will have to read the book to learn the material.
This was a fun class that presents a lot of great classroom discussions, and she encourages multiple viewpoints when we discuss a topic. I did not have much of an interest in criminology but after her class I may take another CRM course.
Very fun and easy class! She was very interesting. Low text book usage. Only thing we had to do was an online journal every weekend. Tests can be a little difficult if not in class. Overall a great professor.
Simply an amazing instructor! Very clear and engaging. She definitely enjoys broad discussion, and exploring multiple viewpoints.
Definitely a fun class. The topics were always cool, we got to watch a few movies and she was very interested in what she was teaching! Go to class so you can be there for activity points! Tests were easy. Just pay attention!
Class was easy! Had to read Nickel and Dimed, that was probably the worst part of the class, but the easiest test to take! If you go to class, you won't need a text book. She's really enthusiastic, fun to listen to!
Intelligent, knowledgeable, passionate, funny, helpful, accessible... the university is making a huge mistake sticking her with nothing but Soc 101 classes!! I would take anything I could with her again!
AMAZING! Come to class take notes=EASY A! Super interesting to listen to! LOVE HER!
Prof. Hatten-Flisher is thee BEST! She makes thing so easy o comprehend and uses real life experiences in her power points. I wasnt present for every class meeting but the way her notes are set up you won't be that behind. Study for exams, do the small assign., take notes and participate in discussions. Easy A!
very nice teacher but doesn't think she fits well for socl 304. she is very knowledgable about the course but expects a lot. i would take her again but probably for a different class. socl 304 is a hard class.
Extremely knowledgeable and funny!!! She makes learning about Crime and Justice really interesting and fun. I would totally recommend her to ANYONE for ANY class that she teaches! GREAT TEACHER
She is a great professor the class is easy you don not need the book if you come to class on the regular. she is VERY helpful. you only receive 5 assignments + one extra credit assignment. they are all opinion based assignments. and she doesn't grade hard there are 3 test and they and start where the last ended. hands down she is great!
Straight up one of the coolest teachers at EMU! You can relate to her! Study off her notes and you're sure to get an A!
She isn't a bad teacher at all, she is very very nice. But I do not feel she a good teacher at SOCL 304 because she goes through the material very fast and most of the class has never written a research proposal paper before so I felt she did not focus on the students but more about getting her lesson done for the day. A LOT OF NOTES.BE PREPARED.
I LOVE this professor! One of the best at EMU!! Tests are straight from the notes, she is always prepared for class, she is funny and very helpful! You can relate to her. Great class! I would recommend her.
This teacher is great! She is so smart and really seems to know the material backwards and forwards. The book is not mandatory but class is. The material is comprehendible and the tests are on the material covered in class (not the book). Its hard to fall asleep in this class!
Very helpful and clear , one of the best lecturers I have ever seen
Take this class with her. She is GREAT! Easy class to pass with an A. She does offer to drop lowest grade out of the 6 assignments she makes you do. And she offers extra credit. No need to by the text. Exams aren't hard. Only 2 multiple choice exams with about 50 questions each and one essay for midterm. You'll learn a lot by taking this class.
She is a great teacher! Two exams which are very simple just study before. Has random assignments so go to class but also offers at least one make up assignment if you miss one. I would say easy A! Very interesting class!
Wonderful instructor! You learn A LOT in this class if you are open-minded and willing to pay attention. Which I highly recommend since this class provides the opportunity to gain a lot of insight into real-world issues. A lot of it is 'controversial' but she handles it in a very professional and passionate manner. Overall, great experience.
Wonderful professor. She expects thoughtfulness from students in their responses. Quite a bit of writing but no deadlines, just have it done by the end of the semester. Offers extra credit. Very knowledgeable, passionate, and helpful.
One of the best instructors I have had. The textbook is optional, but she covers everything thoroughly in lectures.Without studying, I get B's and higher on her exams. Attendance is mandatory, but I didn't mind because she keeps the class interesting. I'd strongly recommend her to everyone.
Jen is the best. She's super passionate, and she will inspire discussion and make you think about things in a new way. Three exams, one entirely about N&D, 6 class activities. Ridiculously easy, super fun, and you will actually open your mind to new concepts. Top notch prof, take this with her!
I absolutely loved this class!!! She is a wonderful teacher and there is never a dull moment in her class. She will make you never want to miss a day. She doesn't sugar coat and she talks about real issues. I wish I could have her for every class.
Jen is so passionate about her work that it really makes you want to listen. I had zero interest in Sociology and only took the class for a Gen-Ed credit, but this class became my favorite class and I never wanted to miss it! Very easy class.
Jen is very nice and funny. I didn't like this class just because of the content, it was boring. She goes through things very fast and it is very note-taking intensive. Overall good teacher.
Best C&J teacher at Eastern Michigan University. I looked forward to going to class and found the course to be more of an experience than a class.
She loves the subject with a passion. Love her, she's will teach you lot.
If all teachers were this passionate, going to class would be the highlight of my day. Favorite teacher/professor I have ever had.
She is hilarious, funny, and not even a glimpse of dull or boring. She lectures and we take notes a lot, but hey I asked if I could record her because her lectures are SO interesting and she didn't mind at all. She's straight forward and really loves giving awareness to her students. She's very inspirational and definitely recommend her.
By far my favorite professor I've had at Eastern so far! There's a lot of note taking, but her lectures are interesting and she makes the class very enjoyable. Exams are fair, as long as you copy down all the notes and study them. You don't need the textbook, but you must read the Nickel and Dimed book she assigns. Take any class you can with her!
Lots of note-taking is expected. Jen makes her lectures bearable and actually interesting to listen to. The textbook is not required, but it is required to read Nickel & Dimed (I recommend reading it a few weeks before its exam). Just show up, pay attention, study, and you'll do fine.
She is very energetic! You will love her lectures but be prepared to write papers. She has you write 10 papers for her class and take 2 exams. She gives amazing feedback on papers but on your test, not so much! I would take her class again. Remember if you miss a class, she does not give you lecture notes.
Jennifer is an AMAZING professor! I highly recommend her!! She makes lectures so relevant so it isn't boring it all. She is hilarious so it really makes class fly by. There are only 3 tests that you're graded on, and the questions are directly from the notes so they're easy! She is a great teacher, very passionate and knowledgeable about her job .
Good Professor, doesn't give much extra credit, you need to be in class to pass if you dont get the book. Very passionate about the subject. You miss a class you miss five slides.
One of my favorite classes I've taken here at EMU! I highly recommend! Show up for class, pay attention, and study from notes, and promise you will do just fine!
Jennifer is great! I usually hate long lecture classes but she makes it so bearable because she is funny and entertaining. Her tests are not meant to trick you, everything is taken from the notes. Now if you don't show up often you might have problems since she gives assignments during random days. If you have a chance take a class or two with her!
Loved her class so much!! Her lectures are long but she constantly makes everyone laugh and loves what she does. There are in class assignments that you don't want to miss so attendance is mandatory. There are 3 exams, straight from your notes. She doesn't really curve, sometimes a point or two. Overall I loved her class and would take her again!!
Really fun and interesting professor. She knows what she's talking about and is very passionate about what she teaches. The class is easy as long as you go to class and take good notes.
Jen is amazing. Always explains everything very thoroughly and makes class interesting. Never any homework. Finals are not cumulative. She is hilarious and always makes everyone laugh during her lectures. There is quite a bit of note taking, but not everyday. Would definitely take again.
By far my favorite professor. Lectures are so much fun and so interesting. No way to know what's on the exam unless you go to class. Doesn't send notes either so you need class for those. Exams are pretty easy if you just pay attention. A few activities that are usually done in class. She's awesome and very blunt. Best class I've taken.
Favorite professor by far!! The lectures are long, but she connects them with real life situations and makes them fun to listen to. She doesn't really use the textbook so make sure you come to class. BEST CLASS!
Great prof to take a boring class with. Turned Intro to sociology into a class I enjoyed instead of endured. Tests are easy to prepare for & easy to take, only one exam with short answer & essay questions, the rest are t/f & multi choice. Lectures were fun and college appropriate, not PG-13. I would recommend and take any class with her again.
Best professor I've had so far. Makes the class interesting and relatable. No homework. 3 exams, 20 true/false, 30 multiple choice. As long as you pay attention in class, you'll do good on exams. I would definitely take this class again.
This professor will not let you down. She wants to hear what students are thinking. The only thing about her is that she will push your buttons and make you question why we think in certain ways about society. Go to her lectures because you never know if there is an in class assignment. There are discussions about videos which are online and easy.
Attendance is mandatory only because you never know when she's going to give a heavy weighted activity in class. Definitely recommend this professor!
I lover her one of my favorites by far
Prof Hatten-Flisher is an amazing professor, I've had her before. You must attend class because all test are based off of class notes and she won't upload them online. Be prepared to actually study for tests if you want an A, the grade is based on 3 tests and 5 in class assignments, so show up! She's passionate and knows what she's talking about.
Really good professor! She is passionate and engages the class. You have to actually attend to get an A but it's an easy A.
Jennifer is an amazing lecturer, her classes fly by from how entertaining she is. She's funny, will challenge your thinking, and is full of information and statistics. You're graded on three tests + five assignments (both in and out of class), so make sure you show up so you don't miss any. Tests are easy if you review your notes diligently!
This was a hybrid course, half online and half in class. You do weekly discussion which are pretty easy and you have 5- 3 pg papers to do. They are easy, but don't wait until the end of the semester. Class was pretty easy as long as you did the work.
Professor Hatten-Flisher is awesome! She is very knowledgeable and funny. Seriously, everyone take this class! Not only is it really interesting, but it's also very important. Easy A if you show up to class, take notes, and do the assignments.
Professor Hatten-Flisher was great. Her teaching style works with people that can learn from listening. She goes over everything on the board in depth. However, the class can get boring if you're not interested in the topic. You have 5 or 6 "discussions" some in class and online which have you answer questions on topics. Two tests and a final. Easy
Jennifer keeps things interesting. I plan on taking more of her classes. She explains everything with clear examples and keeps you engaged. There are few assignments and she gives you all of the material you will need in your notes for a test.
A wonderful instructor that makes her lectures interesting and knows how to keep things from getting dull. Builds written work into the course for those who are not the best test takers. Communicates information well and is overall a great professor!
Hatten-Flischer is an amazing professor. She isn't afraid to tell you how it is but she's professional about it. She doesn't put her lectures online because she knows students are less likely to show up then. The lectures aren't bad though as she makes them interesting and loves to add humor into the class. Take her if you can!
She's awesome, easily the best professor I've has since I started at EMU. She is super funny and outgoing and relates material to things that actually matter. She also gives personal experience and stories which corespond to whatever were talking about. She blows your mind with all of the criminology myths/facts! Take her!!!
Very funny, would definitely take her again. Don't skip bc you need to be there for her notes as she does not post them online. Pretty easy going class, tests are easy, just review the notes
Great teacher! Extremely intriguing but if you dont go to class and pay attention it will make the exams pretty hard. You dont really need the book she goes over the content in class. If you take this class be sure to take detailed notes and make sure you study. Does random in class assignments for points but some may also be online.
JHF has great captivating lectures. I do wish she posted notes online, but I understand her reasoning for not doing so. If you attend lectures and take notes, you should do well. The book is supplemental i.e. not required at all if you attend every class or get the notes from someone. You can tell she likes teaching and enjoys debunking C&J Myths.
If you show up to class and take notes on what she presents you will pass the class. She has 5 grades assignments that are like pop quizzes but they are fairly easy. She's a very nice and funny professor who gets stuff graded very quickly.
She is a great professor, very funny and entertaining. There are few tests and assignments, if you take your notes and study then you can pass. I highly recommend taking her for any class you can. You'll never be bored with her as your professor.
If you attend class, take the notes, and do the assignments, you should easily pass this class. Excellent professor that always keeps you on your toes and never bored. I enjoyed her class and recommend her to everyone.
She was a great professor as well as energetic and captivating. Don't miss class, as there will be assignments randomly during classes. You can give her phones to donate to those in domestic abuse situations! I will be taking more classes with her in the future!
Jen is one of my favorite professors at EMU. I've taken her for 4 classes now and I've loved every single one. She doesn't take any crap from students and is truly passionate about what she teachers. I recommend her to everyone.
Jennifer is a good professor. If you show up to her class, take notes and do the assignments she gives you should pass
She is super hilarious, discussions are amazing, is a sailor tho, but her content is always understandable. Activities are one page papers along with a discussion, 5 total ( 6th one if you don't get 50/50 on the other 5 to boost your grade)
very knowledgeable and funny. 5 assignments with the 6th being makeup points. 3 exams based off of lecture and class discussion. as long as you take detailed notes and study, you'll pass. I RECOMMEND BRINGING A LAPTOP (if you're a fast typer) TO TYPE NOTES! she's even joked about giving her students arthritis, so she understands. highly recommend
Shes amazing fr I love her
This class was ok. I thought this class wouldve been a little easier but it wasnt. I studied for the test and still ended up with a C- . The professor is rude and dont really care if you pass or not. I would not recommend the class
There are three big exams and around 5 activities. The lectures are amazing and make you really think. Its an easy A if you pay attention and take good notes!
She is amazing, by far best professor i have ever had she is so genuine and talks about what matters, no matter who does or doesn't wanna hear it. 100% recommend, my favorite professor.
Very opinionated professor which i appreciated. She only gave us 3 exams and did not do a final. We also had class activities which could not be made up, however she gave us an extra activity at the end of the semester to make up for any activities that we missed throughout the semester. Do not take this class if professors cursing bothers you.
She is kind of annoying but overall if you pay attention and take notes you can pass. Don't come late.
She is an amazing teacher. Few tips, lecture heavy is true and you are better off taking notes on your computer. Jen is super loving and cares for all of her students. I have had a couple things come up through the semester and she is always understanding. Also never skip class or be late, there are six in class activities that you can't make up.
Her lectures are hilarious and as long as you don't take things personal then you will be fine. There are about 5 online assignments and 3 tests. No study guide and notes are not posted online. Attendance is not mandatory but it is impossible to get a good grade if you don't go and take notes. No study guide either but there are no trick questions!
An amazing human who makes lectures fun and interesting. Highly recommend
Super easy class! Total of 3 50 question exams, with no final, and 5 discussion boards worth 10 points. Super liberal, but very passionate what she teaches. Overall, good teacher!
Wonderful!
Tests are worth it ost of your grade, if you study you'll do good. 3 50 point exams and 5 10 point assignments.
Copied word for word from the textbook into powerpoints. Did not allow for us to see what we got wrong once a test was submitted. Misleading true and false questions on exams. Little communication. The actual material is good for SOCL majors and very important, but this professor was just not it.
This whole class is based on your final paper so every assignment is a piece of the paper. BUT don't think you can just combine it all at the end, this girl's grading is so off it literally depends if she wakes up feeling nice or not. Some days everyone gets an A and then other days nope. She also says some rude comments when she left feedback.
Not many assignments but not hard to get a good grade. I took the online asynchronous class and all of the answers to the tests were easily accessible. My grade was a B and then did the extra credit and got an A+. Definitely recommend.
this professor kept assigning the modules every two weeks without grading previous ones and would not respond to emails or questions. Then eventually sent an email talking about her medical issues. But then still gave a harsh grade even though she had never answered any of the questions asked. Would not take a class with her again
JHF is amazing. I took SOCL304 completely online and all of the information that is on the tests, you can find in the ppts or the book. I recommend writing notes from the lecture powerpoints before reading.
lots of discussion posts for online course.
There were 3 units, each with a discussion post and an open note test. The entire grade is based on those assignments, so do not miss one! There was one extra credit assignment near the end of the semester. Overall, a pretty standard class that I would take again. The professor was accessible and helpful.
I've taken Professor Hatten-Flishers for 3 classes now (SOC/CRM 333 -Violence in Society, CRM 321- Cooperation and Conflict in Society, and SOC 304- Methods in Sociological Research. Overall her classes are pretty easy and straight forward. Attendance is mandatory. PowerPoints are exactly like her exams, and exams are open notes. Highly recommended
An amazing professor in so many ways! Very willing to help students and wants to see you succeed. Very passionate about her work!
