Professor Haylett is an excellent instructor. It is clear she's passionate about what she teaches and really wants all of her students to succeed. Tests are non-scantron, so be prepared to write short answers and essays. Overall, I really enjoyed her class.
This is my third time having Jen as my professor and I get happier having her as a teacher every time. She is good at applying concepts to the real world so that you can easily understand it. Her classes are easy and super straightforward. She tells you exactly what to expect on her tests. Usually she has two papers do but they are relatively easy.
Tests are pretty easy and straightforward, usually she gives 2 papers for the semester and they are relatively easy. Her lectures are really interesting and interactive. Definitely would recommend taking any class with her.
Jennifer is very open with students contacting her. She wants to hear your feedback, cool things that you found on the internet that connect to class material, and talk about her favorite shows during office hours. Her lectures are always interesting and she encourages students to be comfortable asking questions. 10/10 recommend
Funny, caring, and interesting professor. She has very interesting lectures and incorporates her personal life into them. She also likes to relate the topics to college kids lives which makes it easier to listen to.
Professor Haylett was my favorite professor this semester. I had her for Modern Dating which was an Honors First Year Seminar and it was super easy. We just had to read an article every week and discuss it. She genuinely cares about her students and wants them to do well!
Professor Haylett is one of the reasons I decided to stay enrolled at Iowa. She really cares about her students and is very approachable. If you have a question you can feel free to ask it, she doesn't make fun of people, even if the question or answer was stupid. All-in-all great professor and great person.
She is a fun person to listen to and genuinely cares about her students. The material is interesting and makes you keep an open mind. There are pop quiz writing assignments in lectures so don't miss lecture if you don't have to.
I loved this class. Lectures and reading material are interesting and thought-provoking. The class is well organized and expectations are clear. I would definitely take another class with her.
Jenn Haylett is a wonderful professor and a genuinely caring person too. She's current on women's reproductive justice and various other areas of medical sociology. She's also the honors adviser and an great resource outside of class! She expects lengthy and in-depth papers, but the subject matter is always very interesting and engaging.
Professor Haylett was one of my first instructors at the University of Iowa and one of my favorites. I did not realize how lucky I was to be in her class until I gained more experience as a student. She clearly cares about her students and is interesting to learn from. She provides study guides for her tests and wants everyone to be successful.
Gives really great and interesting lectures. There is quite a bit of reading, but nothing one can't handle. Study guides are given for the tests, which prove to be helpful. Attendance isn't mandatory, but there is short in class assignments occasionally. They're really easy, but are a part of your grade. She gives good feedback and is very caring.
Always happy to help students
Very good lecture
Great professor who takes the time to explain concepts. Fantastic lectures. Always interesting!
Jennifer Haylett is one of the best professors I've had so far. She cares so much about every single one of her students are cares about them doing well in her class. She doesn't assign much homework and she has good lectures that are easy to take notes off of! Totally recommend her!
Make sure you do both the online and book readings. There is a paper over the book and the grading on it is tough, so make sure you actually read it. Overall she is a really great professor and wants you to learn the material because it interests her.
Class and content is quite easy. You learn about social issues, than basic sociology content. If you are looking to take this test to prepare for the MCAT, don't. Take it with someone else. Tests are straight forward. Weekly quizzes based on the readings.
Took Intro to Soc about 2 years ago and have been trying to get into another of Prof Haylett's classes since. She inspired me to get a minor in sociology after one class. Very approachable and very intelligent. Amazing prof.
Jen is my absolute favorite professor at Iowa. She really cares about the success of each of her students and is generous about meeting outside of class for students who are struggling. Would definitely recommend one of Jen's classes for a Gen. Ed.
The class is really boring and very little data is presented to support her claims.
Good Professor, very fair.
Annoying and condescending.
Had her for intro and she's an amazing professor. Cares a lot about her students, will chat at office hours or even over coffee. Grades papers standardly, but will allow students to contest grades. She expects you to at least skim the readings before lecture. She's super sweet and explains everything really well. Take her for gen eds if you can!
Jen is wonderful - the people who are saying otherwise likely did not like the concept of sociology in the first place. She's incredibly intelligent, always open to new opinions, and not difficult. You learn so much. Jen is absolutely wonderful and if you have the chance, take from her.
Well, this was the second course I have taken with Professor Haylett and I enjoyed this one just as much as the intro class I took. Professor Haylett genuinely cares about her students and the stuff she is teaching. Class is only twice a week and honestly, you don't need to go to class as long as you keep up with deadlines. Highly recommend.
i love prof. haylett! she is so nice and makes class super interesting. If you go to her office hours for help she will 100% help you, and she wants you to succeed. Would deffinally recommend a class with her.
Nice teacher, posts lecture slides and gives study guides for the exams
Professor Haylett is an excellent Gen ed teacher. This course is very clear in terms of what is asked of you and no assignment is really that difficult. Two exams that are multiple choice and short answer, she gives you a study guide that makes it very easy to study for the exam.
Jenn is an amazing professor who genuinely cares about teaching sociology in a way that is comprehensive and enjoyable. Stay on top of readings and attend lectures to keep an A. She is clear in her directions and encourages her students to ask for help. I wish I could take it again, youll love her and this class!
She's really understanding and supportive when it comes to student struggles! Really flexible with due dates if you have a legit excuse for an assignment extension. If you visit office hours she'll literally edit your papers and tell you what to add in to make it an A paper. Tells you exactly what will be on exams, no surprises. LOVE HER(:
One of the best professors I have had at Iowa! You can tell she really care about her students. Her class is super easy and straightforward but it's still interesting. You're expected to read but nothing too difficult. She does have short answer assignments for lecture attendance, so make sure you go to class if you can.
Professor Haylett is so kind and really accessible outside of class. Her lectures were really thorough and course expectations were clear. She makes difficult material easy to understand.
You will never have a better professor than Jenn. Not only is she an incredible lecturer, but her classes also are not difficult yet you still learn a ton. She is a true teacher at heart. Her Soc of Sexuality class was my favorite class ever - I learned so much from her & my other classmates. Jenn is a gem, take as many classes with her as you can.
Dr. Haylett is a great professor who genuinely cares about her students. Her upper level courses never have exams (just papers) and there is a lot of freedom in her classroom for discussion. She is open to all opinions/questions, never belittles students, and keeps class interesting. She's funny w/o even trying. Highly recommend her Soc. courses.
Jen is my favorite Professor in the Soc. Department. She truly cares about her students and their well-being. You can tell she genuinely is interested in sociology and our insights/opinions on topics. Her lectures are always interesting and you can tell she enjoys teaching soc. Def take her upper-level classes. Overall, great, passionate professor.
I think prof Haylett is a good teacher however she can be confusing with the many emails she sends out. And it's almost impossible to reach her outside of class. Overall, I think she cares about the well being of her students and wants them to do well.
Jen truly is a saint. At first I was skeptical about the class since I only took it as a Gen-Ed, but her lectures are very interesting and engaging. After COVID, Professor Haylett really showed how much she cares for the well-being of her students, and wants us all to succeed. Would recommend her to anyone.
I heard Soc was a very difficult course, so I was nervous coming into this class. However, Prof Haylett is awesome & I found the material super interesting! There is some reading and papers, but they are worth your time & help on quizzes. Show up, do you work, and you will do just fine.
Great professor. Intro to Sociology was an easy A if you did the basics. She offers a lot of extra credit. The discussion sections were easy as well.
This is an interesting and easy gen ed. There was a lot of reading but I honestly didn't do most of it and I got an A in the class.
Don't waste your time trying to email her because more than likely she won't respond. I always went to my TA for questions or help instead of wasting my time. Overall, the class is relatively easy. Her grading criteria is also unclear a lot of the time.
I've tried taking intro to soc twice and dropped both times b/c I did not like the other prof's lecture style, but I finally tried Prof Haylett's section the 3rd time and passed (': Respectful and flexible grader. Looking forward to taking another one of her classes this semester! (she doesn't respond to emails tho, just sayin)
One of the easiest classes I've taken at Iowa. Professor Haylett is so nice and very understanding. Her quizzes are easy and the TA's grading is really lenient too
I really enjoyed this class because of how interesting the content was. The quizzes were very short and pretty easy if you did the readings and took specific notes. Although discussions weren't the most engaging part of the class you'll definitely want to attend them for the group activities.
Great professor with a fair grading system. Course work can be heavy on and off but never too much to handle. Course content is super interesting. The most work done for this class was for the discussion portion.
class is super easy only like 5 quizzes and a paper. professor Haylett is a super nice woman and makes sure students are successful in class. I didn't like how one-sided this class is. she gives off strong feminist and liberal views which I have no problem with but when the class is only viewed from those and similar perspectives it kinda stinks.
Really nice professor with easy to follow and engaging lectures. Made the material super easy to learn and actually interesting. Could have easily gotten an A if I turned in everything on time. A big portion of grade based on discussion assignments but they are easy and independently done. One of the best professors I've had.
Her lectures were good and she explains course content really well. Definitely drags some topics on during lecture but overall it was fine. Most of your grade is quizzes/discussions. No final exam. Make sure you do the readings and attend lectures and you will easily get an A.
She is a wonderful person! Haylett is a very student focused professor. I recommend attending office hours, she provides great feedback and is a great person to get to know. I found the class very simple as long as you do your work. My only complaint is sometimes the directions are unclear, but she will gladly explain and offer help!
Gender and Society is one of the easiest classes I've taken here. Discussion sections are fine and you'll have opportunities for extra credit. This year, you have the option for a take-home final. Also, skipping class has virtually no consequences.
Prof. Haylett is nice and Soc is super easy, but the way she runs her class is horrible. She acts like she's doing a favor by dropping one project grade, but it's an automatic 0 already. She doesn't explain how she grades papers. She talks too much in lecture. She'll take points off your assignment if she disagrees with you politically. Good luck.
This class is pretty easy if you pay attention to lectures. You don't have to do the readings as long as you pay attention in lecture and take notes. She is very nice and seems to care.
Toughest grader ever, so over the top. So much reading as well and her quizzes so difficult. The readings were so boring and long, I gave up. She did not respond to emails either and clearly liked her topics but not students at a beginner level class.
She's literally amazing. Just took her class to knock a gen ed out of the way and ended up loving this class. What we're learning is interesting and she teaches it in a really conversational way and is super chill all around. There's a good bit of readings and lectures are a lil boring sometimes but overall it's great
I took the class to fulfill a gen-ed & ended up loving it. Prof. Haylet truly cares about her students. She is passionate & knowledgeable. Her expectations & feedback are straightforward & it's easy to know what to expect. Grading can be slow, but you get good feedback. Lectures are conversational and usually interesting.
Professor Haylett has really interesting lectures and she presents topics in a relavent way. The quizzes aren't too difficult and cover material from lecture and the textbook. Although she has a lot of students, it is easy to ask her for help. Discussion group activities can be graded harshly by the TAs, but I recommend taking her class.
Class itself is cake. 6 quizzes/exams, only keep 5, 1 paper out of 3 options, 5 discussion group activities, multiple extra credit opportunities. My biggest annoyance is the grading speed. Some of it was out of prof's control (TA slow grader) but 1 week from finals and I still haven't received grades for things done in the first month of semester.
Graded by 5 quizzes, 1 paper, and 5 discussion group activities. Each activity and quiz is based off a reading. There is tons of extra credit. The lecture is just her reading off of a slideshow with random in lecture attendance forms.
She is a great professor very calm, respected, and has great lectures. Although it can be a tad boring due to the lengthy class time. However, get ready to write endless papers, reading responses, and take two exams. The entire class is graded on papers, exams, and 'Participation In-Class Activities'
She was pretty good, had good understanding for students and graded pretty fairly. Topics of this class weren't that enjoyable or comfortable to learn based in what I believe and we learned the same topics over and over. But overall good class just make sure to participate and do your work.
can easily get an A in her classes. randomly takes attendance and attendance can impact the grade a bit so make sure to go. honestly only downside is that she NEVER replies to emails. do not even waste your time trying to email her, just email the TA.
She was a joy of a professor even over zoom. I could have done better in participating to receive a better grade.
Good lecturer, discussion section has a lot of work - group activities almost every time. She is nice but not very understanding regarding mistakes a student makes or if you try to make up work/missed something. Sometimes does lecture attendance, about every other week
Professor Haylett is one of my favorite professors! I'm always engaged during her lectures, she explains concepts well and creates a welcoming environment. I took SOC:3750 with her and although there is quite a bit of reading, she goes over the topics in class so it is easy to understand them. Highly recommend taking any class with her!
Jen is an easy going prof, lectures are not mandatory but sometimes will surprise you with attendance. She pretty much just reads the slides so you can honestly just access them by yourself on icon. No midterm or final just bi-weekly online quizzes that are not too hard.
Professor Haylett was great! She was so understanding of mental health issues and if anything came up where someone couldn't go to lecture. She taught in a way that was easy to follow and didn't dump too much info. The only thing is she is hard to reach outside of class.
Her lectures are boring to sit through and you have to go to them because she has random in class lecture activities. but if she did not, you can get an A without going to class and you do not have to pay attention. Easy A but if you want something more interesting I would do that.
Professor Haylett is so caring and amazing . Lectures are very easy to follow, and while there is reading, she goes over it in class and it's very easy to understand by the slides she puts together. The work is not tough at all as long as you are up to date. She gives mental health days and provides plenty of extra credit throughout the course.
I had Jennifer for both Intro to soc and American family. Her classes are very easy and engaging however her only flaw is she takes FOREVER to grade assignments so at the end of the semester you are unaware of where your grade stands up until finals week which is a pain. However if you want an easy class with minimal effort take American family.
Prof Haylett was a great professor. Lectures were easy, information was relatively simple, and quizzes were easy and low-stress. She offers a lot of extra credit too, which is nice. I got extra assignment points just for turning my notes in to provide to other students. Discussion is a little boring and time-consuming though.
Class is great, she explains things well and I like how the class is structured. The workload is just right to get a good understanding but not overloading.
Prof Haylett is an amazing lecturer, her lectures are engaging and are very informative on the topics. She cares a lot about all of the students and is a joy to talk to. My only gripe is that she takes a while to grade assignments so it's a bit stressful at semester end. But nonetheless, a fantastic professor.
Easy class not very serious. Great gen-ed to take. Jennifer is a very nice person but can get distracted during lectures.
Professor Haylett is easily the best professor I have ever had. She cares about her students, even in a class like Intro to Sociology with 500+ students. She gave us mental health days. Quizzes are online and open note, so it is important to take good notes and pay attention to what she emphasizes in lecture because it will likely be on quizzes.
Jen was awesome! The 6th quiz is the final and she drops your lowest, so I don't think many people even had a final in the class. You do have to write 5 short papers for this class but they aren't too challenging and the grading criteria is very fair. I didn't go to lecture a ton but I'd highly recommend doing the readings for the quizzes.
Professor Haylett is an amazing professor. In her Intro to Sociology course, she lectures in a style that helps me learn very efficiently. In the past I have had professors speed through 20 slides in 1 lecture sitting. Professor Haylett doesn't do this, rather, she focuses on around 5 slides per lecture and really nails the concepts into your head.
Jennifer is great! She's very kind and accessible. Some of the material can be a little hard to grasp at first but grading isn't anything to worry about if you study a little bit.
Professor Haylett was so sweet and amazing!! She gave us lecture and discussion group off one week for a mental health refresh. She always made sure to keep us involved during lecture and super nice person and explains things nicely.
Im not sure why Jen has such a good rating. Yea she's nice but the grading on the first test in gender and society was insanely tough. Docks points for stuff like saying "choice" instead of "feeling" just kinda annoying. Fine and easy class I guess.
i love this woman, not only does she make sure her students understand the material, she sets her classes up to let students decide what grade they recieve. do all the assignments = A, she even calculated what assignments you can skip to get a certain grade. she had discussion group activities which can be annoying but helped learn material
I never went to her lectures because she would just talk my ear off about things that weren't even on the lecture slides or tests. Got a good grade and the tests were straight forward and easy.
Professor Haylett is very sweet. Class is very paper heavy and they are graded on complete or incomplete depending on how well you met criteria. Exams are graded tough and points are docked for minor things. Overall easy Gen Ed class as a business major.
I LOVED Jen! She is so kind and sweet and is really understanding. She gave us an entire week off for mental health break midway through the semester. Class is pretty straight forward and only 6 quizzes but 5 are required and are all open note. Couple papers and discussion activities if you want an A grade. Extra credit opportunities for attendance
Professor Haylett is a great teacher who cares about her students. The class is easy but tedious if you complete all of the readings (I recommend only doing the readings if they also have assignments). The quizzes are taken home, and so is the final. I would recommend taking this class for an easy A, but I didn't learn much.
Jennifer was an amazing professor!! You can tell she truly cares about her students. There are frequent in-lecture activities that count towards participation. However, you are allowed to miss 2. I appreciate that there are no exams and you only have to take 5/6 quizzes if satisfied with your grade. Overall, I recommend this class!
Various assignments throughout the semester are required to get an A, but more time-consuming than difficult. Lots of reading but she explains them well in lecture. Lecture is not mandatory but recommend going to do better on quizzes. She is a great lecturer, gives lots of real-life examples, and is very considerate of students' personal lives.
Professor Haylett cares about her students, and it shows. Going to her lectures was enjoyable and engaging. I loved the material she taught. Taking 5 of 6 quizzes was the final, then had to write a couple of one pagers. Over light workload.
Class is a JOKE just do all the assignments and follow the instructions and it's the easiest A you'll every get
She was nice & was very clear about what was expected. Gave many reminders and pointers for homework/quizzes. No tests or final. Projects/short papers were pretty easy. There was quite a bit of reading, but it honestly wasn't always necessary and I found a pdf of the textbook online so I didn't buy it. Was always available for help. Great overall
Professor Haylett was a professor I got for my first semester as a freshman, she made my experience in this class so simple. She was very easy to work with and was very accommodating with unexpected circumstances that were out of my control. She gives plenty of deadline reminders on homework and take home quizzes. One warning, she does yap a lot.
She truly cares about her students. There are a few assignments and papers you have to do but if you go to lecture she basically gives you the answers. No exams, just 6 quizzes and the lowest one is dropped. They are online and open note. A lot of readings but I only do the ones we have assignments over. Super easy class and great professor!!
9/10 class. Only complaint is the lectures were extremely boring, but it was not mandatory to attend.
She would take attendance randomly but workload is very chill. There is no real exams, just online quizzes. She is very sweet and you can tell she has our best interests at heart. I love Jennifer!
Great professor. All the rubrics were very clear and she was a generous grader. Classes were interesting with lots of guest speakers. No quizzes or exams. Grade composed of three assignments that you chose from a list of maybe 15 options.
Love her so much! She is super chill and so easy to work with. Intro to Soc is so easy and manageable with other hard classes so if you have a heavy load you can add this on if you still need it. She is such a good person which makes her such a good professor.
The easiest class I've ever taken, Prof. Haylett has very interesting lectures and is super understanding. There are 6 one-pagers and 1 three-page essay which are easy as long as you do the readings. I didn't do the readings unless there was a paper component. Highly recommend going to discussion bc that's a large portion of your grade.
Professor Haylett is a really good lecturer and is very nice. Class is pretty easy, and you will get an A if you show up and turn in assignments.
I took her for SOC:2710 over the summer as well. Nice lady easy class, no midterm, no final. Everything comes from quizzes, participation, and a few short papers. Her stuff is pretty interesting too. No complaints
i liked professor haylett a lot. she's very passionate about sociology and is accessible outside of class. the class is mostly graded by six papers and six quizzes, no final.
Professor Haylett was great! Her lectures were insightful, and she explains topics clearly! Not too many assignments, and for the most part the readings were short and actually engaging. Professor Haylett is extremely kind and intelligent and always there to help students with anything they need!
Overall easy class. The DGA papers and SLAs were a pain to do but were just part of it. Lectures weren't bad at all and you need to go for lecture participation points. Your finally grade is based on the 5 quizzes, 5-6 papers, and participation. I did get the chance to talk to her outside of class and she's super caring and a overall genuine person
I really like Prof Haylett, I think she genuinely cares about her students. I really liked how organized and put together she was. In lecture you have some assignments that count towards your final grade. You have discussion group activities that are really boring, but also will help boost your grade if you do good. RECOMMEND THIS CLASS!
Super easy class but waste of my time. Attendance is required but lectures last 30 minutes max and she repeats herself 5 times and only covers 3-10 slides a day. Spends 20 of those minutes talking about a graph that only needs 1 minute to explain. Waste of my time and such a gimic. Only take if you need it for a gen ed.
