Even though she is the teacher, she doesnt actually grade anything but your final speech. There are Instructor Assistants that teach the class where you are with 8-12 people. I had a great expirence but my IA was amazing. Jennifer is really blunt but if you put effort out she appreciates it and will be a little more leniant. Not very friendly

For being a public speaking class Jennifer isn't too great at it. However the class itself is easy, you do three speeches in front of a peer group led by an assistant, then the final speech is in front of a larger group with a different teacher. This is a public speaking class, so it's hard, yet it's hard for good reason. Jennifer is strict but she is easily the best instructor for this course, by the end her students can really give a speech and knows every aspect of how to do so including how to get through speech anxiety. She may seem tough, but she really cares and is a great teacher.

Comm 101 is the worst, most disorganized class I have taken at Western. The two exams are unnecessarily hard and the questions are ridiculous. Hays acts like a second grade teacher, her voice is always condescending and she calls students out by embarrassing them. The structure and handbook of this class are a mess. Pros: improved research skills.

COMM 101 is a monster to take and understand. They do a good job working through speech anxiety, and the small groups are great. However, the packet they give you to explain the course is incredibly dense, and the expectations are quite high for a 100 level course. DO NOT TAKE WINTER QUARTER. If it snows, you'll be scrambling to complete everything

Pretty hard, but not impossible unless you simply can't speak in public. Extremely organized, and taught mostly in small groups by TA's, so they're relatable. The 2 tests were unreasonably hard, which is why I got an A- instead of an A. Beware: one group speech. The other 2 are individual and you have to put in effort and research to meet req.

She is a hard grader for no reason, if you do everything you need to do, she will find ways to deduct points for petty reasons. It doesn't matter if your homework is correct, she will deduct points in any way possible. Horrible teacher with a lot of busy work for no reason. I strongly encourage you to avoid her. put me in a terrible mood

I really enjoyed this class, however you really need to put in the work. You also need to be comfortable with public speaking (or get comfortable with it quick). The feedback and small groups have a unique approach to this course that made it enjoyable and easier to navigate however it is a heavy load.

She is nice and very passionate when teaching. However, she is a tough grader. She also made us buy an expensive e-book. Does not tolerate late work and attendance is very important in this class. I like that she tried to make the class fun. Appreciate the effort.

Great professor, she's a tough grader, but she only does it to see you grow. She gives good feedback, she literally tells it to you straight, which I appreciate. The work's not that hard, but that's just me since I'm used to the workload--this is my third year. Easy grade if you actually want to get better at public speaking.

I took this class as my final GUR, and besides this class being completely useless to me, I found Hays to be condescending and at times simply rude. I believe she teaches COMM because she likes to hear the sound of her own voice, and no matter how well you think you did on a speech she will find something to critique.

condescending and sometimes rude. gave contradicting feedback on speeches which was incredibly frustrating. could find something negative in every speech. would give feedback, but did not provide examples on how to actually implement the feedback. by the end of the quarter i dreaded going to class.

I took Hays' class in 2022 Spring and she was a great professor. She is pretty meticulous on presentation and report grades, but didn't matter too much as long as you did your in-class, homework, and project work well enough. Be thorough but brief for presentation and reports. Work hard and show your interest, she'll notice and work with you well.

I do not understand where all these negative reviews about her come from. It's so obvious that she cares about seeing her students succeed. She is a generous grader and gave very constructive feedback. She is the clearest instructor that I've ever had, and also has by far the best canvas page I've ever had. Very useful class, highly recommend.

Jennifer's section class is revolved around 4 speeches, she is great about making a welcome environment but does get upset if things don't go to plan with her students. Speeches are graded easy if you follow the rubric. Get ready to do research and critique others' speeches. Attendance is mandatory but class is fun to watch others and get inspo.

My favorite professor at western, she is so kind and cares about her students. She makes her classes so interesting and make you want to go to class. There are a lot of readings at first but its easy to manage, as for speeches, her rubrics are clear on what is expected of you. If I took this my first year, it would make me want to major in comms.

If you are looking for an easy 100-level course, skip this one. If you miss one day of class it will feel like you are a week behind. As far as Hays goes, she is good at conveying information but she is terrible at giving feedback. Not afraid of being condescending and rude to you in front of the whole class.

She definitely cares about her students, but she also can berate you in front of the entire class. She hates if you're late/absent for one day, and you get two free absences. It's a very demanding/hard course for a 101 class, and in retrospect I wouldn't take this if I knew that. It sucks so much time from you with just the quantity of speeches!!

Jennifer was a kind and decent professor, she did her job and led the class well. The grading criteria was very unclear throughout the course. The flaws with the class had mostly to do with the vast time commitment that this as a 4 credit class required.
