This teacher is hard, she gives assignments that are hard, and never focuses on how to do the essays. Don't take this teacher if you don't want to do a lot of work.
I had professor Hedgecock at OCC and yes she can be demanding but who said college was supposed to be a walk in the park? Anyhow, if you expect to learn anything take her class but if your looking for an easy A take another. I passed with a B.
lots of work with no explanation on how to do it...she also has a deep mono-tone voice that makes you want to kill yourself
She is a really hard teacher. She is very stright forward. If you don't understand anything she is willing to help you. She is hard. So if you are not willing to show up for class then dont take her
Not a good teacher. She is very hard and almost gets annoyed if you don't understand. You can only miss 2 classes the whole semester which makes it even worse
WORST teacher ever. She only says things once, and gets VERY annoyed when you repeat the question. Work load is very heavy, and she is never clear about what she wants, and is never willing to help you. She does not proofread your rough drafts, so they are useless. She has an extremely high expectations, and gives a lot of C's. DO NOT TAKE HER!!!!!
This teacher sucks. She never explains anything, and always changes the dates for things that are due. STAY AWAY

Very nice, She is very hard in grading your papers. Always micromanges the work and takes a chunk of points of little things. I advice you to revice the work 5 or more times because she will catch anything that is wrong.

Very hard and uncomfortable. She sighs when class is over. Annoyed if you ask her quesions. You ask in East - she answers in West. Changes syllabus several times. Not organized. Bad blackboard writing. Too strict on grades. Not on students level. Sways a lot in her opinions. Forgets what was on the schedule or does not get to it. Avoid her!!
She is confused and a new teacher in this subject. Professor is not clear in her statements. You can ask her questions per email as she prefer not to answer in class.
She is nervous. Can't answer questions in class. She is new and need practice. She has a wall and is trying too hard to fit in.
If youre a slacker, find another professor. She wants you to review a lot of material and grades pretty tough. I enjoyed the class, shes interesting and if you dont show up for the youre going to be confused. This class prepares you for university, not just a reiteration of high school english. I got an A, too many crybabies -->
Ms. Hedgecock is extremely boring, and really confusing. I wouldn't reccommend taking her classes, although if you listen in class, you'll probably get a B. She grades really hard, and has no sense of humor whatsoever. Although, she isn't that bad to look at.
I really liked this class. She tought me how to write college level papers. If you listen and don't waste your time complaining you not only will lear a lot but have some fun along the way. Come to class to learn and focus not to goof off and talk with your friend.
I have to say that I loved Ms. Hedgecock's class and she's an awesome teacher. More than half of the class had dropped before the end of the semester, but that was because I don't think that they really wanted to take the class. She actually cares about how well her students do in her class. She knows what she wants and she doesn't take any cr*p.
Professor Hedgecock is very well educated. If you want to learn how to write properly, and you are actually in college to learn, then I suggest you take this teacher. You will get a good grade if you listen, follow direction, and don't be a wise ass. If you are looking for an easy A, a no-brainer class, then take some other teacher. Professor Hedge
She is a really nice teacher. If you slack in english then i wouldn't take her. Be ready to write one essay after another. There are many class discussions so be prepared to be called on. I got a B in the class so i found it to be easy as long as you go and know how to write the assignments, then you shouldn't do to bad. Shes always willing to help
She is an amazing teacher. A sweet lady. I never liked writing papers at all, but she has always been there to help her students when they're having difficulties. Expect paper works every week, but for sure she will guide you all throughout.
I took this class a year ago before transferring to UCI. I feel that Professor Hedgecock prepared me well to go on to upper division work in English. The professors at UCI have very high expectations, so if you're transferring you'll want to work hard in this class. She also really cares about the students. Make an effort to get to know her.
I'm ambivalent about this professor. On the good side, she is a good teacher. She's very intelligent and professional. On the bad side, she has extremely high expectations from students. She gets frustrated easily and her directions are sometimes confusing. Slackers beware! She is the REAL deal. Expect to write a lot of essays in her class.
She does have high expectations and grades hard. However, she does like original works. She can get frusterated easily with a class, you can tell by her lectures. However, getting an B in that class shouldn't be that difficult if thats what you're looking for.
Although she is nice and very friendly, this is a hard class to sit through. A lot of writing, and a lot of lectures that don't seem to have much to do with any of the assignments. If you like to write, this class should be a breeze.
She is a good teacher, and it's a fairly easy class as long as you can pay attention and do the work, she is nice as long as your on her good side and she can be helpful
She is just such a difficult individual. I am not sure if she is living a double life, but she seems very short fused at campus and is off track easily
Jennifer Hedgecock is probably the easiest and coolest english teachers. You do not have to show up to class every day. There is no home work except for the six eassy essays. I am a dumbass and got an F because I cheated and she caught me. Highly recomended professor.
she is very nice and likes relates to every student...she went to CAL and Oxford so she knows her stuff. she is very smart and tries to initiate cclass discussions among peers. assignments are easy except the final research paper is a little difficult which included a presentation with it. good class though got a B
Nice lady but she grades pretty hard on the essays. no homework but the things we go over in class seem pretty pointless. if the majority of the class doesn't read, she'll give in class quizes. She's pretty repetative and unclear at times.
Worst proffessor in the world. Always rude with her students. Loses assignments and is not organized. does not teach well and shouldnt be teaching. Out of rating of 10 I give her a 1. Whenever you talk to her she says not now.
Her class is based solely on the war on terrorism-using current events and political issues to write three term papers on..not my cup of tea. Not for the faint of heart. If you like english and want to learn about current events this is for you- otherwise the class was worthless as an english course. Nice lady though and wiling to help if needed
I dont know who wrote these other reviews, but she is by far the best english teacher ive ever had. She's very smart, and teaches very well. The only work in the class was some easy essays. I believe that during the time ive had her, I learned more about writing than all through out high school. I plan on taking her class again next semester.
Horrible!!! Expects work to be that of an english major...Serious lack of social skills and compatability. It's very apparent that she feels that she is at a way higher level than everyone else...if you don't match her level she thinks nothing of you....does not explain what she wants in her papers at all!...very vague requirements for papers!
grades rediculously hard...extremely particular about every detail...focuses on little points in paper that don't even matter....a very awkward lady...you don't want her!
Overall this class was a little on the harder side, and I felt as if we just took the same notes everyday about the same things. You need to go or she will drop you. She is a nice lady though. The only reason I enjoyed this class was because one of my friends was in it with me.
tough professor. went to oxford & used 2 teach @ chapman and UCI, so she knows her stuff. she wasn't nice, but i just pitied her. she has a PhD in english, and you can tell it's her whole world; it's all she has. stick to topics covered in class for your essays, and work on transitions-she nitpicks. don't use online sources. good luck!
I learned more about writing in one semester than all through my prior schooling. She gives lots of individual help on papers. Anyone who says it is too hard is just lazy. There is not much work and the work that is assigned is not hard if u give the effort. I got an A & actually learned something. Im currently taking her 1B class. She's Great.
17A English Literature - She is extremely knowledgable - enjoyed her lectures immensely - high standards - excellent at coaxing qualtiy work from students - lot tougher than most saddleback teachers but truly a benefit to students with positive attitudes and good study habits
A tough grader and very selective in what writing styles she likes. One word to describe her personality is awkward. She was never rude to me personally but was to some classmates. Overall she is a mediocre teacher at best but really loves the subject
Dr Hedgecock is a great teacher, she makes the class seem very difficult but it is actually pretty easy if you follow directions well. I got an A in her class after about 20 kids dropped it. She is a little intimidating in her teaching style but she grades very fair and is always avaliable to help.
Worst teacher ever. She is useless and can not teach, I didn't learn one thing in her boring class. Everyone in the class did not like her-worst experience of my life. She has an attitude problem and personal issues she takes outon the class. Don't take her class!! No homework, but will fail you on every essay.
She is extremly awkward and weird. Just watching her teach makes you cringe. If you know any better do not take her class, especially if you want to be the only one in it by the end because everyone drops. She doesn't know what she is talking about-has random assignments due at random times and has the most idiotic topics for you to write about.
I really enjoyed her class! she is very nice, but expects you to put in a lot of time and effort (which is understandable) she is a teacher overall.. She is a hard teacher, but just wants the best for her students. She is a bit intimidating, but show her you care about her class & she'll take interest!
straight up, this class tore me a new one. if you like to burn and chill after school this is not the class for you. too much thinking and research is involved. i know i need to learn harder levels before transferring, but seriously she's gnarly
I had her for one day before I dropped her. She assigned an essay on the first day of class - not too bad, right? For the examples, she showed us a few essays. Oh, did I mention that the highest grade on any of the examples she showed us was a D+? What the hell? I'm assuming she had no papers in her entire grading history that received better.
I have take accelerated English in all of my 4 years of high school. In fact, English is one of my favorite classes. However, I ended up dropping Hedgecock's class. She talks to students in a condescending manner and plays favorites. Horrible teacher
if you want to feel stupid and be talked to like a child then take her class. you will have to teach yourself how to write a paper. she says she will be there for you if you need help but when push comes to shove and everyone needs her help casue no one understand because she didn't teach... she will say "I don't have the time to help you now"
She's the best professor I've ever had. She's brilliant, helpful, and her class is really enjoyable. I took English1B and loved her so much that I took another class with her. If you actually want to learn something, take her class!
I am currently in her Honors 1A class. She is smart and thoght provoking. When you are in a transfer level class don't expect it to be easy. I do recommend her because any teacher that tries to make you think outside of the box is good! Your mind must be open to be a good writer and that helps you in business and in life.
She was always there for me. She does make you work. I got an A. The stoner chick in front of me got an A. The meat head next to us was stressed out of his mind, but he got a B. Almost every lecture is centered on preparing and peer reviewing drafts. How much more help does one need? She won?t write the papers for you.
I took her for english 1A Honors and learned so much and really improved mr writing skills. She is a tough grader, but is more than available to help you get a good grade. Show her that you care, and she will really like you and help you a ton! Just go to her office hours and youre set for help and getting to know her :D Highly reccomend.
eng 17a. she is very unorganized, did not warn us of reading tests. syllabus bounced around everywhere and was extremely unclear. i had no idea what had to be read by when. it was extremely hard to stay interested. she only connected with a small number of students and the class was basically watching them talk the entire time. dropped her.
This teacher gave no opportunities for extra credit. Very hard grader, did not round up on her grading. I was borderline between B and an A, and she chose to give me a B although I had attended every class, received 2 A's and one B+ on a paper. She doesn't budge on her grading, does not grade up. I was bored every class & she's monotone.Do not take.
DO NOT TAKE FOR AN EASY A. or if you want to learn something. I got a B in the class event though she told me that I was one of the best writers in the class. She tells you to voice your own opinion and then shuts it down if it isn't like her's. She just isn't clear on what she wants. It wasn't a bad class but I could have found a much better teacher
I took both 1a and 17a and I think she's a great teacher. But her classes are not easy. This class is not for lazy people. If you ask questions, participate and do your best, she'll be there for you. If you show interest, she'll do her best to help you out. Go to her office hours, email her (she ALWAYS answers emails real quick). Highly recommend
This class is not easy. I spent hours each week writing papers, but I learned a lot from her. She is very helpful and clear about what she wants from each assignment. I finished this class feeling incredibly confident about my writing ability. This is not an easy A, but well worth the time and effort.
I don't know what you people are talking about. I had Hedgecock for English 1A and she is extremely helpful. I got an A on every single essay except for a B on the persuasive essay because I didn't put as much effort into it. You will get an A if you work really hard and if you meet with her during her office hours and attend class.
Awesome teacher! Extremely helpful, Strict at times but you learn a lot and she is willing to help you during her office hours.
MY FAVORITE PROFESSOR. I improved a lot in her class, and will definitely take her again. She is very involved in whatever story/topic she is covering. The only people who hated her where probably the lazy ones who didn't participate in class. It was very hard NOT to participate in the discussions. If you want to learn something, take her class.
This was a rough class. She does teach very, but this is not an easy A.
OUTSTANDING professor. Dr. Hedgecock indubitably pulls the best out of you as a student and writer. You have to work hard for your grade; but if you prepare by reading and actively participating in discussions with useful insight the class is amazing. She's also very helpful during office hours. You get back what you put in with her class.
If you don't like doing actual work then go elsewhere. She is brilliant and a published author. If you see bad ratings for her on this site it's simply because they are incompetent and dislike SCHOOL work. Isn't that part of attending school? Take this course if you want to become a better writer and you may actually learn something in the process.
She is amazing!! I had her for 1A and MADE sure i got her 1B class. Shes very helpful and if you ever feel stuck on a paper she is more then welcome to help you. GREAT with e-mailing back quickly, and is very nice. BE SURE to talk in her class and participate even if its one sentence. This isnt an easy A class, you need to do the work!
Dr. Hedgecock is a fantastic professor! She really cares about her students and her subject. She's very enthusiastic. She's not easy, but she makes her expectations clear. Definitely take her! I don't even like English and I loved her class.
No doubt,my favorite class! Some days I felt like she wanted to rip our heads off, but I still love her. She will help you if you take the time to go to office hours. She will even stick around a few minutes after class for quick questions. I never had any doubts about what she required on the essays. Readings are interesting; assignments engaging!
She is a very intelligent and interesting woman who really knows what she is talking about. This is not an easy class, but she teaches you how to write an effective essay. You cannot slack off in this class, if you do you will fail. If you're willing to work hard she will help you get an A. Read the material and participate!! Use office hours!
Definitely my favorite professor so far. I took the Honors English 1A course with Dr. Hedgecock and although it wasn't easy, my writing improved substantially. Make sure that you participate during the in-class discussions and visit her office hours. The class isn't an easy A, but if you put the time and effort into your essays it will pay off.
Professor Hedgecock is amazing! The class discussions were always relevant and engaging. I highly recommend!
Professor Hedgecock is a wonderful professor. Class is engaging. She never made you feel like your opinion of a film was incorrect. You have to write 4 essays and do a final project in front of the class, but there is not weekly homework. You are required to show up, so if you do not attend class three times be prepared to be dropped from class.
Professor Hedgecock is probably the most knowledgeable and passionate English professors I have ever had. Her lectures are detailed and insightful. There is no reason not to do well in her class as long as you do the work and put in the effort. She responds well to people who meet with her in office hours and show that they are hard workers.
I went in knowing that this would be a difficult class, but the amount of energy and enthusiasm Dr. Hedgecock puts into her lectures is contageous. Her love for literature truly shows. I personally didn't want to take her class, but after one lecture, I knew it would be good semester :)
Great facilitator for discussion. There are four essays and one presentation. I didn't really like the final project but the other parts of the class were very interesting.
Hard class but it'll make you a better writer by the end of the semester for sure! She wants you to succeed and is always willing to help during her office hours. Can get angry at times so dont get on her bad side!
Professor Hedgehock is a great teacher with a lot of enthusiasm and passion for what she teaches. It is a very rigorous and tough course! You have to be willing to put the effort and the time in to research. She's a hard teacher (and grader), but overall cares about her students. I would recommend to anyone taking an english course!
Sure, she's a very intelligent professor and by no means do I undermine her capability to teach. Unfortunately, she's unfair in that her papers & midterms revolve around vague concepts and it's very hard to raise your grade if you're stuck, especially with her grading... ONLY take if you're VERY confident in your ability to rise to a fat challenge.
Hedgecock is hard. Essay prompts are vague. She's not very helpful in class, go to office hours for help & clarity. Not an easy A. If you are up for a challenge then take her.
Sometimes she's in a good mood and sometimes she's not. I don't find the class to be a very friendly environment. If you don't need this for your major, then don't take.
Not an easy class, but she is very fair in her grading. She is also clear on assignment and the syllabus not once changed. You always expect whats going to be on the two in class essays (midterm and final). I would recommend to anyone who wants to improve and likes discussion based classes.
Dr. Hedgecock is an amazing professor. She is very intelligent and knows what she's talking about. Her essays and exams are straightforward, and her quizzes test superficial knowledge of the text (to make sure you read). Her lecture was engaging, insightful, and quite profound at times. Overall, she's just great. Take her if you want to learn.
Definitely not an easy A, but if you're looking to learn something, this is the class to take. The essay prompts are vague, but it gives you a lot of room to work however you want to. She's passionate and articulate. It's important that you do all of the reading. Overall, a very good and interesting class.
Do not fall behind. In fact, get ahead and plan on meeting with her in person once a week. This is how you will get an A. ps. everything you learn from her you will use for the rest of your life. hard teacher but teaches you the best research skills you can ever acquire.
LOVE Dr. Hedgecock! She tells you exactly what she wants from you. Go to her office hours, super helpful! You can even offer your ideas to the class & get help on how to construct your papers. Draft midterm and final before class and have a note card for main ideas, pretty easy! Does some grammar work, but mostly papers. The first one's the hardest
It was a pleasure taking this class because I always walked away with something interesting to think about after her lectures / class discussions. She has a very intelligent way of coming across and her straightforward manner is refreshing. You can also tell that she really cares and listens to her students.
Class was awesome. A little difficult at times, but this is college. Reading is a fair amount, and would recommend including all of Paradise Lost instead of a single chapter. This was my first academic class in years, and has reignited my interest in literature. This class builds character in the student more so than any other class i've taken.
The class is extremely difficult. There were 10 journals, the teacher only graded half of those. It was difficult to get any feedbacks regarding the grades as she only gave out letter grades. Grades scale are very unclear and 89.5% is an B. Bummer! The teacher was not helpful at all and she rush people out when students ask for help after class.
Dr. Hedgecock is a wonderful professor. Certainly not a push over or an easy A. I would highly suggest visiting her office hours for help on essays, she will review and give helpful suggestions. My writing has improved immensely from this class. Be prepared to work hard for your grade; no starting essays the night before.
Although she is kinda a tough grader, she really works with students to help. Her lectures are amazing, you discuss all the problems in the world today (which doesnt sound like english, but its her way of getting discussionideas for essays out to everyone!), and barely lectures boring english computation junk. You have to go to class!
Really good professor! Will help in her office hours on papers. She really cares about her students passing. She is very intelligent, her lectures always kept me thinking throughout the day. I became a much better writer in this class. Not an easy A, but worth taking!
She is an extremely smart and well educated person. She can be very very grumpy in the morning and sometimes just shuts everybody down. Like most English teachers, you need to write what she thinks. GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS, That is the only way you'll get an A (no matter how well you write). Got about an 89.8 and she gave me a B.
Quirky, which I enjoyed. Encourages class participation : ) Gives great feedback, even if sometimes a bit harsh. I am a much better writer now. Very willing to help out if you are willing to work. Really cares.
She is an excellent teacher. I appreciated the fact that she really cares a lot for ESL students. I will never forget her lectures. She taught me a lot. I will definitely will take another English class with her!!
It's not an easy A but I learned a lot. She is very smart and she cares about the students leaning. GO TO THE OFFICE HOURS! You wont get an A if you write your essays without her impute. I liked her but you have to turn in all the home work and go to all the classes with the rough drafts. It's worth it if you want to be a better writer.
She is obviously a very intelligent person. She respects her students until she has a reason not to. Somewhat difficult papers but ALWAYS talk to her about them beforehand - whether about thesis or topic- just do it. She will appreciate the ambition. Probably better off not going to a class rather than showing up late.
My favorite professor! Took her for ENG 20 and learned how to actually work for my grade, so I took her for ENG 1B as well. It's not easy, but you actually learn critical thinking. FYI do not take this class if you are not serious about academia. Also, she hates when students get up in class, as she wants you to respect your time and her lecture.
I learned more in her class than any class I've ever taken, her class is very challenging but it will make you a better student.
Amazing and inspirational teacher. Lecture are enjoyable and i learned so much in her class. I didn't think it was possible to enjoy English literature this much. Not that she's a tough grader but she expects a lot from you. My writing did improve a lot thanks to her and she was very accepting of different opinions. This class has been a new fave.
Dr. Hedgecock is the best professor that I have had in college yet. The assignments, although tough, and clear and she is readily available to help her students understand exactly what she expects from them on each assignment. The assignments are interesting and make sure you come to class prepared and ready to learn. AND PARTICIPATE!
It's a bit of a tough class. I had more reading for this class than any of my others. BUT, she loves to really talk about the story. She's tough, but you can tell she's very passionate, and loves to pick the minds of her students and know how they interpreted parts of the story we had read. Take her if you can, but be ready to work!
Hedgecock is the best. She has an immaculate memory (remembers all the student's names, and the order that they raise their hands), and is very engaging with the class. Her style is professional and respectful, and she expects her students to treat her the same way. Show up on time to class, be ready to learn, and do the work. Highly recommend.
Not an easy A. She makes you work for your grade. Comes off as very intimidating but honestly one of the best teachers I've had. Learned a lot in this class. GO TO OFFICE HOURS. If you go to office hours for essays you are almost guaranteed a good grade. Participation is also key, make sure you talk a lot during discussions because it matters a lot
She really does comes off as very intimidating but is honestly one of the best teachers I've had. Learned a lot in this class. Participation matters a lot to her. DEFINITELY always be on times well.
This class will certainly strengthen your writing skills. However, the discussion-based lectures sometimes felt like a waste of time. Don't miss peer edit days. Class participation is important only because it is graded. Engaging some days, inexplicably grumpy on others. The Everyday Writer book is never used, don't bother buying it.
She collects Rough Draft but never give you comments or feedback from it, in other words, you have to come to her office or email to ask for feedback. Nice class overall, but not easy.
Dr. Hedgecock is an extremely well educated and kind woman. She may seem intimidating at first, but all she wants is your respect and she will give you just that. I definitely had to work for my grade, but this class was very rewarding. My tip for everyone that wants an A: GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS AND PARTICIPATE (a must)
Make sure to join in on the class discussion. She really likes the people who speak up in class. Even if you are wrong just say something it's half the grade. Go to her office hours for all essays. Even if you don't want to DO IT! She gives great feedback and I think she grades those a bit easier too. She really makes you work for the grade.
Amazing professor! You will definitely learn from this professor.
Dr. Hedgecock is the reason I aspire to be an English professor someday. I never spoke up or gave my opinion in class, which is something I regret, because she is amazing and leads amazing discussions. If you love literature, reading or writing, take her class. She is amazingly knowledgeable. Attending class is a must! You won't want to miss out!
Awesome class. I recommend her for anyone, you will not be disappointed!
Professor Hedgecock is all around a good teacher. She will improve your writing tremendously. My grade struggled a bit because I did not participate as much as I should have. Be sure to attend class and be ready to engage in the discussion. She offers time during her office hours to work with you on your next essay due, so utilize that!
tough grader and she never gave me good feedback on my essays although I met with her during office hours, idk if you're not a strong writer, don't take her class
Made me a better writer. Some find her intimidating, but she is helpful and pleasant to students who work had for their grade and show initiative. Attend office hours at least once per essay! Class discussions are thoughtful and entertaining, though not always helpful. Speak at least once a class, even if just reiterating another student's point.
Hedgecock can come off as very intimidating at first, but really just demands respect. Her papers can be hard to write and receive a good grade on because sometimes what she wants from them can seem to be unclear. The lectures were interesting but sometimes felt not very useful. Overall the course was alright, but I would have rather taken another.
very nice lady but she is a tough grader and she does not make any exceptions for anyone. be ready to work for your grade and not expect to receive any slack. she can be funny but most always is very serious.
Hedgecock, although adopting a very monotone voice, is actually quite the character underneath and will have you laughing each class. Tough grader, but she shows genuine interest in what you write if you truly care about it. Prepared me well for future English classes as well as how to make your writing professional.
A true gem at Saddleback college, Dr. Hedgecock is by far one of the most instrumental professors of my college experience. Her class is difficult if you prefer to be coddled my your professor. If you want to learn how to become a good writer, take her! You will thank yourself, especially if you transfer!
Great professor. Will help you if needed.
I do recommend taking ENG1AH, but make sure it is a good professor. Do not be intimidated because it is an honors class. She does not have constructive criticism and didn't keep the class on topic. Go to her office hours because she's very specific in what she wants in your paper.
Professor Hedgecock is by no means a bad teacher. However I realized after the second essay that it would be all downhill. All the essays in her class were based off of the same topic and topics were picked before we had the chance to do any research. Meaning that if you didn't pick a good topic you were stuck with it for the rest of the semester.
If you love writing essays and researching, you will love Hedgecock. She's very smart and will make you a better writer. If you don't, I don't recommend her. She wants very specific things in the essays, but it's really hard to figure out exactly what. I was incredibly stressed and worked my hardest to get a B, and I consider myself a solid writer.
Extremely difficult professor and extremely worth it.
Dr. Hedgecock is AN AMAZING PROFESSOR that really will get you ready for the future. If you are a hard working student and want to succeed you MUST take her class. Dr. Hedgecock helped me develop my writing skills and I will be forever grateful for that. If you show a great attitude and ask for help she ALWAYS helps you. Definitely recommend her.
It's not hard as long as you put in the effort, which is usually as simple as raising your hand during lectures and contributing something thoughtful to the discussion. If you just sit there, never speak, and leave no impression, then that won't fly with her and it'll hurt your grade. No homework, but a fair amount of quizzes.
Amazing Instructor, very personable and talented. Always goes out of her way to help you whether inside the classroom or out. I would take her class a hundred times if I could.
Best english teacher I've had in terms of teaching me work ethic and determination to finish assignments. The work you put in is the grade you will get back out of it. She's only hard on students because that is how it will be in the future at four year universities and beyond. She is really trying to make students succesful and not become slackers
I absolutely LOVE Dr. Hedgecock! She's super great if you are really interested in improving your writing skills. She can be a bit strict, but just don't mess around and you'll be fine. I could see how some people may find this class hard, but if you actually put in effort, you'll be fine. She also has a great dry sense of humor.
Dr. Hedgecock can be a tough grader and some people might find that difficult, but she is that way so that her students are successful. She is the best English teacher I have had, she cares and wants you to succeed in her class. Go to her office hours and get her to read your papers before they are do, this will benefit you A LOT!
Easy class took it for a Program Im in at school. Easy A. Learned about transferring to a four year college.
Solid choice, she makes you work for your grade and its honestly worth it. You end up learning A LOT from her class, she gives you very solid feed back. GO TO OFFICE HOURS, her office hours were pretty accessible and follow her advice. Don't fear her, but respect her.
Jennifer is an Amazing Teacher @ this Honour Lvl. Course. I found the course pretty easy but I don't expect that everone would. She is also a very good conversationalist and very well traveled. Thank you sister. Very like minded.
Semi-hard grader, but if you get on her good side (showing up to class, as well as showing up early. Class can be boring at times, but she goes over just about every single point for the essays being written. Office hours help so much, and if she sees that you're going to them and putting in the effort, she does give a little grace on assignments
Dr. Hedgecock is pretty stoic most of the time, and assigns a fair share of essays, but she gives really great feedback on your papers and gave me the benefit of the doubt when it came to my final grade. Max 4 missed classes before she drops you.
Second time taking her and she is absolutly wondeful. Get on her good side quick and ask questions when needed and use office hours because she wants to pass you. Only had 3 essays and one presentation the whole semester and a few small journals. Easy if you like to to write.
If you are looking to expand your knowledge of literature, and improve your analyzing abilities then this is the class for you. Professor Hedgecock is the most knowledgeable teacher I have encountered. The class is filled with amazing short shorties that you tear apart in class discussions. Be prepared to read and contribute. Love is class
Extremely difficult class, even if you are a good writer. Your main assignment is based on one topic you pick before you even get a chance to research it properly. Expect to dedicate lots of time outside of class to meet with her otherwise, you will not pass. As someone who works 25 hours a week and takes other classes, Hedgecock wasn't for me.
Professor Hedgecock is one of the most passionate teachers I have ever met. The way she speaks in lectures really shows just how much she truly loves literature. She loves in-depth discussion of texts so make sure to speak up. When she sees a student engaging, shes more likely to help them succeed. She looks at essay drafts during office hours.
Very easy grader, you have to participate in class, and I recommend you go to her office to get Essay's reviewed before turning them in
Wonderful professor if you are attentive and want to do well in her class. Attendance and participation are mandatory; if ignored you will most likely finish with nothing higher than a C. I enjoyed her class and went to her office hours a lot for insight on essays. She was very helpful and was always happy to listen to my concerns.
Professor Hedgecock is an amazing English 1A teacher that gives great feedback on essays (even though she's somewhat of a tough grader). You have a participation and attendance grade so skipping or taking days off is often detrimental. I recommend listening to her writing instructions carefully and visiting her after class to guarantee a least a B.
It seemed for me like Dr. Hedgecock taught her ENG1A (non honors) class like an honors course. It was very difficult for me in my first semester in college. She seemed to cover a large amount of things each lesson that were seemingly unrelated, so I got confused sometimes. Seems smart but I couldn't get what she was trying to convey often.
Professor Hedgecock's classes are University comparable. Her classes are not easy, but they are the most interesting classes I have taken in my life. She connects all reading material to what is currently going on in the world and makes you fall in love with medieval literature. Do yourself a favor and take her class.
I dont care HOW GOOD you think your reasons are for taking this class, DONT. Every day will be a full hour and 15 minutes of monotone, repetitive lecture. Dont bother asking questions ever, shell just tell you shouldve payed attention to when it was mentioned in class. Extremely intolerable to talking. Homework is never posted. Tbh, just dont
Dr. Hedgecock is a mature and insightful woman, she is an intellectual and intimidates some students. Definitely a female role model for me, I didnt want to disappoint her in any way. Writing papers was fun because of all the discussions prior to writing them. If you engage in discussion, youll have the material. Also met my best friend there!
Tough grader but cares for her students and is willing to give help in office hours. She is an amazing lecturer and is quite inspiring.
Do not take even if you think you are a good writer. She is not focused about helping- she is focused about tearing you down. My whole life I have been prided on my writing abilities and within one hour she completely took that from me. Embarrassed me in front of everyone (without even saying my name) and only talked about the weakness of my essay.
She is a great person but this class is very difficult (at least for me) and she does not offer much outside help. She did not regularly show up for her office hours and never once replied to my emails. (I sent over 7 the whole semester) So if you are a very self-sufficient person you will be fine but if you need extra helo good luck.
Literally takes weeks to respond to one email (most of the time she never even responds). The homework/essays she literally posts the DAY they are due. She did not show up to ANY of her office hours I attended. Her actual online lectures arent helpful, instructions on assignments are vague. Rude in her emails. Do not take her class.
Took her over the summer, so this class was faster than a normal semester for me. She is very good about responding to emails. Attend office hours on a regular basis to work on your papers and you will have no problem getting a good grade!
Took her my first semester of college in 2019, and I have never had someone degrade my writing so much. Her feedback bluntly states what needed to be fixed, but you don't have a chance to develop your writing. She yelled at my class for not participating and despite us participating after, still got 0/5 for participation. Not worth it.
If you are an anxious person, DO NOT take her class. I have never had to work so hard for a class; you have to write four essays about ONE topic throughout the semester. She shows your essays on the projector and has the whole class critique them. If you miss class twice, just drop. If you think you are a good writer, she'll make you think twice.
I literally have never failed an English class in my life before this class. She is not well adapted to teaching online at all, because she failed to attach certain instructions to her modules and still failed me for not following them. She even said my writing was very good, but because certain instructions were missed, she still gave me a D.
Horrible, literally never helps you even when you are clearly struggling. She only points out how bad your essays are instead of trying to help you even though your clearly struggling
One of the worst professors I've ever had. Quizzes constantly have wrong answers as the right answers (eg, a quote from a character will be the question and the character will not be listed as one of the answers). She never responded to any of my emails. Assignment criteria was unclear. Classes were spent with her rambling and no real discussion.
This was my first college course at Saddleback. She can be a tough grader but if you go to office hours she will guide you to success!
I have to say that I'm a bit confused over some of the more critical reviews, especially considering that I took three classes with Dr. Hedgecock and found her to be nothing other than helpful. If you want to coast and get an easy A, maybe look for another professor. If you want to be prepared for success in later classes, you can't do much better.
I took in person because the online reviews seemed poor and it worked out well. Lectures are sometimes boring but she pretty much just gives you the answers or how to write your essay. The essays are pretty much the only things that make your grade so be sure to spend a lot of time making your essays perfect.
If you are an English Major take classes with Dr. Hedgecock! She is so inspiring. Make sure to attend her office hours while working on your essay, and your work will improve immensely. I have become a much better writer because of her. She motivated me to pursue the Honors Program, and is by far the best professor I have had.
The absolute WORST teacher I have EVER had. Unable to properly explain instructions and doesn't actually help even during office hours. She CAN NOT teach properly. References things that were never posted. Only finished the class because she graded the first assignment AFTER the drop date. PLEASE, for your own sake, DO NOT take this class.
Great professor. She really takes the time to read your paper and offer insight and value. A tough grader, but it's because her standards are high and she wants to see you improve. A large portion of your grade is based on your essays, so really spend time on those.
Please don't take this class if you have anxiety. She grades very tough, however if you visit her office hours and explain your anxiety, I think she might be willing to understand.
Sometimes she would take forever to grade things like rough drafts to the point where the final draft is almost due. She would switch up the way that she grades, it almost seems like two different people are grading the work. A lot of the time her directions are unclear and she messes up on the due dates that she writes in the description.
Having taken her English 1A Honors class and gotten an A, I can safely say while she isn't a crazy hard grader, she does want to see well-thought-out papers for an A. If you're taking her class in person, as I did, pay attention. She gives away all she wants in her essays from the lectures. Work hard, and you'll reap the reward.
Dropped this class within like a month because she made me cry twice, made me feel like an absolute idiot during office hours even though I went to receive advice and guidance. She does NOT teach you, only expects you to already know poorly taught lessons. She is the most disrespectful, rude, and stuck-up professor I have ever met. Has no empathy
Super easy class. As long as you pay attention and participate in class you can legit do all the work done
I loved her! My friend recommended I take the class with her and she did not disappoint! It is VITAL you build a rapport with her outside of class. She can often make mistakes in her instructions so e-mail her if you are confused at all. Talk to her during office hours to get feedback on your essays. Participation is key too! She's amazing overall!
I have taken three classes with this Professor Headgecock. She makes it clear what she expects and gives you everything you need to pass. All three classes I've gotten a A or B and thats with her being a tough grader. she offers to read your essays before you turn them in which makes getting a good grade on your paper easy.
She's a tough grader but she gives you everything you need to pass. I didn't read a single thing in her class and still passed with a B its possible if your willing to work.
On essays, it feels that you have freedom, but you don't because she is looking for something specific, and nothing will please her. I thought outside of the box when writing because that is one of the requirements. This is not a class for people who think more in-depth and have much to say about a piece of literature and its history.
Don't take her English 1A class unless you want to struggle. Such a tough grader and makes you read a lot. No matter how much I tried in this class, I would not receive the best grades and honestly felt like I was in an honors class.
She is very accessible outside class and she is a quick grader. However, I found myself being arbitrarily marked off for things that were subjective. This is definitely the kind of class where you have to do exactly what she says and how she likes it, or you will not perform well. Not my cup of tea, personally.
This professor is amazing. Anyone who wrote bad reviews is probably not willing to work hard. She is a tough grader, but if your goal is to transfer she fully works on preparing you for what to expect once you transfer. Go to her office hours! She is very welcoming, and loves seeing students who are willing to put in the work !
She is my favorite literature professor I've ever had at Saddleback College! Her lectures are very engaging and she is truly passionate about literature. She is a tough grader on essays but if you pick an interest during your reading and transfer that to your writing you'll be fine. I would highly recommend everyone to take her English lit courses.
Very tough grader even on discussion boards. You're seemingly given broad topics to write your essays on but her grading is arbitrary and subjective.
Professor Hedgecock has high standards, but if you put in the work, you can succeed. The essays are the key, so use available resources like office hours and unstuckstudy to nail them. Stay engaged in class and you'll be rewarded.
She dropped my grade down by a few percentage points otherwise I could have gotten an A on the last day of the semester. I went into office hours as she had graded my first paper and she gave me a C+ and then she told me to come in for office hours as she said in the email that she would raise my grade but she didn't.
Without a doubt, she is very picky/subjective on what she wants to see and therefore harsh when it comes to grading essays. Speaking of which, you will be writing essay after essay with no stop whatsoever, with evermore increasing difficulty. Personally, I feel like she has a very condescending attitude which isn't necessarily very welcoming.
She uses old lessons from previous years and does not update dates. Very confusing to track everything and no accountability when questioning the locations of her assignments. TBH, I think she's a little lost herself.
Taken several of her courses - honors and non alike are awful! Bad with tech and makes mistakes on canvas constantly. Can come across as incredibly cold and frankly 95% of the time it's unneeded for her to be so strict. Never had a professor so... nauseating. If you're able to, take any other professor. If not, I'm wishing you so much luck!
Professor Hedgecock is a tough grader, but hard work will pay off. She is very quick to respond to emails and ready to help during office hours, both of which as essential to passing this course. Rubrics and assignment instructions can get a bit unclear, especially since some dates and details don't get updated between semesters.
Her class is how you make of it. If you go through the motions and don't put in effort into the class, you will not end with an A. However, she provides great resources with her office hours and emails as she does care about her students succeeding. Sometimes her rubrics can be outdated, so make sure to take advantage of her office hours.
Thought provoking class, provides great history on literature and helps you understand some pretty daunting texts. She is a tough grader, but going to her office hours will truly help you succeed and develop your ideas. Other reviews are correct in that her syllabus is outdated so dates are incorrect, but she will fix this if you let her know.
She's nice and easy to talk to but doesn't actually lecture on anything important. Every class was the exact same unhelpful lecture or going over some old student's writing. The essays themselves were super easy to get A's on as long as you follow what she's looking for. Just suck up and she'll love you, but if you're looking for engaging, not it.
Professor Hedgecock is a really smart and respectable woman. Her course, however, wasn't all that. Most of the class was based on a book that had no relation to the course, pretty useless (you could probably get away with not reading it at all). Other than that, the lectures and essays were pretty solid. She gives good feedback on tough grades.
Her classes are all lecture-based and she often goes off-topic for long periods of time. She doesn't bring up the essays, you just need to check with the syllabus to know when they are. We read about two full novels a week but only end up talking about one passage which is frustrating. Office hours are great and she does care if you go talk to her.
never take this class again
I don't think she's too bad, but it's really hard to get a good grade, and the lectures are extremely long. She's a good professor, but if you're looking for an A, she might not be the best choice. If you're in the honors program, go for it. Otherwise, it's not worth it.
She was just rude. Her lectures were absolutely pointless I don't even know why I showed up to class. Once I went up to ask her a question about extra credit and she started talking to me about how my paper was so awful and not like me at all. Didn't even listen to what I had to say. SO RUDE!! Avoid at all costs!
