I took Professor Ho over the summer at Mission, but she is full-time here at West valley now. She is absolutely hilarious and has a passion for sociology. She makes the subject interesting and fun coming to class. She provided real-world examples and funny personal stories to keep the class captivated. The exams and homeworks are not bad at all.
Great teacher. Has unconventional teaching techniques, like telling amusing anecdotes or showing clips from popular media. Entertaining, but never strays from the topic of the lecture. I would highly recommend this class to everyone, whether they need this class to fulfill a requirement or they plan on majoring in sociology.
Took winter intersession online course. Really clear directions and expectations, TONS of extra credit opportunities. Minimal work but strict on deadlines. 4 exams with 5pt extra credit opportunity. one final project. super nice prof and 110% an easy A.
Took her Winter Session. If every online teacher was at clear with expectations and assignments as prof Ho, I WOULD NEVER GO A FACE TO FACE CLASS. She makes the learning material easy and engaging. She's the perfect online prof in my opinion. Best experience with an online class.
She makes class interesting. She uses pretty dramatic examples but they help. As long as you attend class, take notes, and review them the exams are not bad at all.
She is a horrible teacher, I don't know what everyone is talking about. She tries too hard to be funny and only talks about things that are super irrelevant in class. I did not learn a single thing. That class was a complete waste of my time.
Fun teacher who uses popular media in power points. Can relate to students since she's a younger teacher. Helpful when asked questions and tests are easy if you study the lecture. No homework and had 3 essays that you could pick topic. Would recommend if you want a nice laid back teacher who knows her stuff.
Easy teacher. Examples in class were a little crude and over-the-top, but makes an effort to make the material as simple as possible. Attendance not mandatory, and felt there was more to sociology than she made it to be. I actually wanted to learn more, and ended up getting an A without learning a whole lot about sociology.
I would definitely recommend Ms. Ho. She was my favorite teacher and this was my favorite class. Not only is she a really good teacher, she has great sense of humor, is very understanding, and really cares for her students.(She deserves a flaming hot chili pepper!!)
I took Professor Ho for soc and soc problems and they were basically the same class. However, I enjoyed sociology because she relates the chapters and her examples to the class that makes it easier to understand. If you're not into personal stories and rant-like (not in a bad way) lectures, then do not take this class.
Chillest teacher, so down to earth super easy class just do the HW. All exams are online that you do in class. Online and In class basically the same. If you can't get an A in this class you must be really dumb. She goes off topic a lot but you end up engaging in what she talking about. Super fun class TAKE HER!!!!
I've taken Professor Ho for both SOC 2 (Social Problems) and SOC 20 (Race Relations) and they were basically the same class, with the latter being an extended version of the former's race relation module. That being said, both were very easy classes and Professor Ho is hilarious and fun to listen to. Definitely take her!
Sociology 01 with Ho was great and I will highly recommend it everyone. She understands a lot of sociology but dumbs down the concepts for Soc 1. Sometimes it's insultingly simple.
She was really nice
Jen is frikken awesome! She is one of the clearest professors I have ever had. She picks very recent topics and really wants students to participate in discussions. I love how she lectures and I love how informed she is on current events around the world! I am in her soc2 class and really wish I could take another class with her. Everyone take her!
As a sociology major, I was very disappointed with instructor Ho. She is a charismatic and friendlyopen instructor but I'm not here to be friends. There is a lot of open discussion and I feel like the class goes off on a tangent. Don't get me wrong, I do not think she's a terrible teacher. I just feel like I'm not learning as much I could
Great class! She's so funny and makes the stuff you learn in class actually enjoyable
One of the easiest A's, and you can pull a lot from the class. Funny professor!
Great class
Great teacher! Going to take her for all my sociology classes. She has very clear and concise lectures and the tests are easy if you study and know the material. Papers are a little tough but she helps you with them. Easy to get an A if you do the work. Her lectures are great and are very interesting. Take her class! Great instructor, very funny!
I didn't have the greatest experience with Ms. Ho. She's a tough grader. I took her online course. Her papers are quite hard. quizes were hard as well, but are manageable. She doesn't curve final grades, which is not great at all. I was 2 points away from an A, and for a college that doesn't use the +- system (B+ or B-) those 2 points means A LOT!
Jen is an awesome teacher to learn from because of the group atmosphere created within the class. There are class discussions daily, and she makes sure concepts are clear before moving forward. She's definitely the professor that I tell people to take because it was just so easy to learn from her. If you take her you should Dial 1-900-MIXALOT.
I took Professor Ho for Social Problems last semester. She is very clear with her instructions and provides every opportunity for you to succeed. Her lectures are always interesting and often contain hilarious personal stories. Be sure to show up to every class and take good notes from her lectures as her tests are based off them.
She is really amazing and one of the greatest professor at West Valley College. She is really hot and if you attend the class, you will easily pass the class.
Jen is hilarious, and super fun to listen to. Her lectures are easy to listen to, and she has a lot of really funny stories she uses as examples that really help the concepts stick in your head. She doesn't take attendance every class, but she will randomly give out extra credit to people who are present if she notices a lot of others are absent.
Jen Ho is the best teacher at west valley. She is smart but dumbs things down for students which makes the class very easy. All you have to do is show up and the tests/quizzes are a breeze. The classes I took were interesting and she is hilarious!! MUST TAKE HER!!! online or in person she is great!
The best online class I have ever taken. Ho clearly understands how to put a online class together. She is a great communicator and explains her curriculum well. I learned a lot in the class and feel that I have grown as a person. I would highly recommend this professor.
This is without a doubt the easiest class I have ever taken. Assignment due dates acted as a 'suggestion' rather than a requirement more often than not. Extra credit was given liberally, just for attending. Tests are very easy to study for and lectures are fun. I never once read the course textbook and received an A in the course. Take this class!
Took her online class this winter break. Her instructions are scattered and extremely unclear. She does not respond to emails. Class is a joke! If you want the easiest 3 units you will ever earn take this class. You literally have to try to get less than an A because the class is that easy. Boring as hell.
Took both of these courses over the winter: 1)Tests are extremely straight forward. You don't have to read to pass, but I still did any way to benefit myself. Class avg for assignments were high. 2)Assigns lots of homework- there were so many discussion questions 3)Overall, I really loved the classes. The material was very fulfilling to learn.
Class was easy. She is a great teacher. She knows what she is doing. Everything is pretty clear.. Projects are easy. Not a lot of homework.
Jen is one of the best teachers at West Valley. Her style of teaching really makes class enjoyable. Would definitely take her again!
As a Soc major, the ease of this course is concerning. I learn more from documentaries than Social Problems course. I do not feel prepared to take upper division courses at the university level after taking her course nor do I feel this course helped prepare me for the Soc field. Also, she is very difficult to communicate with if taking her online
Do not take this course online! Homework assignments, writing prompts and exam questions are poorly written and difficult to locate. The professor will not allow students to email either. The general discussion forum has dozens of questions posted to the professor and she has yet to respond. The material is easy but you may as well teach yourself
This course is a nightmare online. Requirements for assignments are not clear or specified, at all. Course work is a joke.
PROFESSOR WILL NOT RESPOND TO EMAIL! Refusal in responding to student inquiries is unacceptable. Vague writing prompts with hidden grading rubrics is absurd. Do not take this course with her online.
Course was fun. Professor is very knowledgable. Material covered is thought provoking but not challenging. If you give this class a genuine effort you will get a good grade.
Jen was a great sociology teacher. She would lecture, we would take notes, and she would relate sociology to everyday life. She was easy to learn from and I enjoyed how mature and funny she was. She has a corgi, too.
Amazing teacher!!
She is an absolutely terrible teacher to take online. DO NOT RECOMMEND. She literally doesn't know what she's assigning us, leaves us to try to figure out our entire semesters agenda with little to no help. Doesnt answer anyones emails to the point where all the students online had to reach out to each other to know simple questions. AWFUL
I've taken all of my sociology courses with Jen, I love her teaching style and that she isn't a hand holder. Social Problems has been my favorite course so far, her projects are easy and she gives you more than enough time to complete them. As long as you follow the syllabus, study the power points and refer to the book, you'll do great.
Class was an easy A, a lot of it was common knowledge and if you take good notes the things that aren't should be easy. Her lectures were very entertaining to the point where I would actually look forward to them.
No office hours. Close door policy. Discourages communication between student and Instructor. The class can be confusing at times and its hard to clarify assignments.
Her class is pretty easy but at times confusing. She has a very strong personality and it can make her seem very rude at times. The material also goes in one ear and out the other so you should study a little before every test. DO NOT buy the book. I did not need it once.
Instructor Ho was always straightforward in her assignments for her online class, and if you did your work and followed her instructions, you will pass with flying colors. Her class is great especially if you're going into the field of sociology, as she gives a few social problem projects. Great class, would definitely take another class of hers!
Instructor Ho is very direct with her instructions and as to what you should expect for the semester. The three exams and a final. Participation is based on attendance and the input you've put in class. She's a great professor.
I took her Social Problems course over winter break. It was very fast paced, we had an exam about every week and a half, she was very direct with the questions on the exam and the final. There are two projects but she's very clear on what she wants.
Jen was an amazing teacher, I definitely recommend any classes with her.
I've taken 3 classes with Jen and will be taking another one this Fall. She's very funny in a witty, sarcastic way and if you don't like that kind of quality you definitely will not like Jen. Her teaching style is very easy to understand and internalize, with her interesting lectures and content. Grading scale is fair and easy to understand.
Her class is easy, she's a tough and specific grader though. She's interesting and funny. Her lectures are all online but you do tend to miss out on easier examples if you miss class cause her lectures are more specific than her slides. pretty easy class, tests are really easy. some projects, some homework assignments but not a stressful class.
Instructor Ho provides very clear direction as to what is expected in the class and how to be successful. If you do the work, you will get a good grade. I have taken 3 of her classes and have enjoyed them all.
Really easy A. There is really only one huge assignment and she is very clear on what she wants from you. As long as you do everything on time it is easy. Little use of the textbook and most responses can be common sense. Most things are due on Fridays tho kinda sucks. Tests are super easy as well. Using the power points are really helpful.
pretty light course load even for a summer class, discussions were pretty easy and opinion based and graded pretty easy. The project is a bit of a pain but doable if you put in the effort. Tests were a little difficult for a lazy person like me but discussions still boosted me a lot to fix my grade
she is hilarious and the lecture is really easy if you pay attention.
Textbook only used for one thing: required citations. If you pay attention and follow up, you'll be fine. Make sure you review projects ask questions when given the opportunity -- her directions are pretty vague and she demands written language skills at a higher standard than most of her class materials display.
Not much to do in that class. Her tests are based on her powerpoint slides. Just show up for the tests and submit all homework on time (okay at least show up for a few classes for a participation grade) and there is your easy A
This is a really easy class. All the exams are off of her power points so if you know those you should ace the exams. No need to use the textbook all of the discussions are just common sense questions. There is one project but it is pretty easy. even if you are lazy you should be ale to get a B.
Instructor Ho is a gem to the Sociology department at WVC. I've taken multiple online classes from her and she's very consistent and teaches the subject with passion. Make sure you read all instructions and complete all assignments. She takes your efforts seriously. Sociology worthwhile and a great learning with Inst. Ho! Great class as expected!
Most laughs I've ever had in a class. Jenn uses real world examples to explain concepts which made for some funny and informative discussions. Study guides at the end of every presentation helped in preparing for the tests. Lots of really great feedback made me feel engaged and prepared. A great and informative class to take with Jenn.
Great professor. Gives a lot of great real world examples in lectures. Not too much work, 3 test, 1 project, final, and like one or two homework assignments pretty chill. Tests are based on lecture and the powerpoints have study guides in the end which is very helpful. Overall enjoyed this class it was very interesting and an easy A!
I took her late start Online Social Problems class. Super easy class! Weekly discussions, original post + reply to one peer. 3 exams + 1 final (multiple choice). Book project, just follow instructions and you will get a good grade. One writing assignment, three concepts learned in the course -one paragraph for each concept. Lots of extra credit!
really good prof. I Trisha who took this class had a wonderful time. I encourage people to take this prof for any future classes in sociology that is required for your major.
EVERY assignment must be turned into turnitin , even when you do what you are suppose to do for an assignment you still will not get 90%. Would never take her again. Cant imagine taking her in person. Never touched the textbook until the final project.
All assignments must follow a strict guideline and any deviation means deduction of points. Timeliness is a must and covering all topics in written work is needed to maintain an A. Be sure to refer back to material from the unit while writing and makes sure to have a more sociological approach to writing otherwise you won't earn an A.
online course has weekly discussions every week, and also be turned in through turnitin i didn't really mind the workload, and she responds to emails promptly. one thing i would note is that she takes a REALLY long time to grade things. Like assignments due in October wouldn't get feedback until mid-November
I loved this class! It made me want to become a sociology major! Concepts aren't hard to understand and she provides study questions for each test! Final wasn't cumulative. Class was always so engaging, you wouldn't want to miss a class!
Took the online sociology class for winter session. Her grading scale is incredibly stupid and she grades RIDICULOUSLY harsh even though you follow exactly what the instructions say.
I took her race and ethnicity class in the spring and overall it's a chill and easy class if you do all the work! She's really understanding, she gave me full points for a late assignment. Each week there was barely one hw assign. and it's a short discussion post + two replies. The tests and final were easy too. Offers extra credit!
I took Instructor Ho's Social Problems course online over the summer and she was great. She responds to emails quickly and is very kind and understanding. Class consisted of 3 discussion posts a week and 4 non-cumulative exams; all of which are very laid back and based off her lecture slides. Also offers LOTS of extra credit. Loved her!
Instructor Ho is such a good teacher. Her stories are hilarious and it really helps to learn the material. I really wish I could take her again. When you first meet her, she seem very strict and down to business, but she's actually very caring and if you create a relationship with her, she's very nice and is very understanding about things.
This class was for GE. I would not take any class with her. Very hard to reach. does not give any feedback on time. takes at least a couple weeks to grade your assignments, until then, it is already time or pass the time for the next assignment. You will never know what you are doing wrong or right until it is too late. Disappointing experience!
Her classes are pretty simple and everything is well organized
I took Instructor Ho in fall of 2020 online. This was just a basic GE class, but she made it super easy to navigate despite having a lot of material to cover. She definitely expects much of you, and if you're not respectful enough to keep up on your work, don't expect her to respect you. Lectures were asynchronous, and easy to review. Great course!
she is Awsome and replies to emails, test are multiple choice study and you won't have a problem
I've taken 3 classes with Professor Ho. 1 was in person and 2 were online. Her grading is super clear on assignments and projects. Read the instructions a couple of times and you can also email her if you are confused. Her test questions are worded confusing sometimes, but overall a great and fairly easy professor!
At first, I thought I wasn't going to enjoy this class, but it was really fun and amazing to learn all the things that she taught. Be sure to do your chapter readings because they will be helpful during the exams and take good notes as it does cover the chapter and lecture material!!
She is really funny and if you take notes on her lectures you will be totally fine. There is a required textbook but I didn't even touch it and was getting 100s on tests. Not sure if this is just a COVID policy, but lecture is not mandatory, but it's fun to sit in her class so I recommend going. Easily available over email and will accommodate you.
I took her during the winter semester (the short 4 week long semester) and she doesn't grade most of you assignments the whole semester. Other professors obviously update along the way so you know what grade you have, but not Jen. Most of our assignments were not graded even after the day the semester ended, which was inconvenient and annoying
I took her during the winter session. She only offers short term classes even though she cannot grade in short amounts of time. She graded few assignments. It's been a couple days since the class ended and nothing updated. Every time you turn something in, you have to submit it on Turnitin. You can only access one question at a time during exams.
I got an A, but I didn't know it until a week after the short session ended. like what others are saying, she doesn't put in ur grades until after the semester... which feels super risky. her discussion post requirements are unclear and she doesn't respond to questions people post. you never know what ur getting. wouldn't recommend.
THE WORST PROFFESOR OF ALL TIME!! PLEASE FOR LOVE OF GOD IF YOU CAN NEVER EVER TAKE HER BECAUSE SHE IS THE MOST PICKY & THE MOST TOUGH GRADER YOU WILL EVER MEET IN WVC. SHE GAVE ME an "F" ON OUR FINAL PROJECT WHEN I DID EVERYTHING BASED ON THE RUBRIC. ASSIGNS A LOT OF HOMEWORK AND GRADES REALLY HARSHLY. JUST AVOID HER AT ALL COST PLEASE!
I highly recommend Professor Ho as she's very passionate about the subject and what she teaches. She's also clear regarding her expectations when it comes to discussions/exams/papers. Her classes are NOT easy when you get into SOC-028 and SOC-040, but that's how it's supposed to be designed so that you can truly learn the material. Thank You!
I got an A, and the class is relatively easy with very laid-out grading criteria, but I have some issues with her teaching. Some of the language and visual aids she used were outdated and inappropriate. I expect more from a sociology teacher. However, if you read and follow the rubric, you'll do well in her class.
honestly just not very engaging course.
She is very organized and has very clear grading criteria. You could pass without the textbook; the slides she posted were sufficient. You don't have access to your quiz/exams so you won't know what you get wrong. Also, she grades work all at the end of the semester, so won't know your final grade. Other than that, it's a light and easy class.
The professor has such unnecesary guidelines that make absolutely no sense and are so nitpicky. This is a community college course, and the amount of work she makes us is insane. It is busy, tedious work and nothing else. We had a 30 question syllabus quiz in the first week, a quiz of that length and weight is insane for this class.
Short homework assignments and fairly easy exams. I would have preferred not to have many of the assignment scores released at the end of the semester but it is not difficult to achieve high scores for each assignment. For the amount of credits, it is one of the least strenuous courses I have taken.
Ms. Ho's class was alright. The assignments were pretty easy and what's on the slides is exactly what's on the tests. The wording on some of the discussion posts and test questions was kind of confusing but it wasn't too bad. The slides were also a little cluttered. Waited until the last day to grade the majority of the assignments, but wasn't bad.
I had a good time in this class, there were two main projects that were graded fairly. As long as you're on top of your work and such this class is a breeze
I recommend taking this class in person and NOT online. Professor Ho gives super interesting lectures which made me want to attend class and be involved in discussions. However, I could see how her grading instructions can be considered unclear, but once you clear things up with her in person, it makes sense.
Class assignments are very easy but professor sets extremely high standards for an online introductory class but also does not make it clear what she is asking for in the assignment post. She will make you submit discussion posts on two separate platforms and do an entire exam about the syllabus..
LAZY. She is such a DISENGAGED professor. Makes me wonder if she is an AI Professor. She probably copies and pastes her assignments and responses. Unhuman She only assigns readings and expects you to provide all the answers to the discussions, etc. Prof Ho is the WORST excuse for a Sociology college professor. You might as well teach yourself.
Professor Ho was an amazing teacher. I turned in an assignment late, and she still gave me full credit for it. Her lectures are easy to follow, and she gives a very appropriate amount of homework. Our projects were very fun as well, although she hasn't graded mine yet. Very cool class and subject, just pay attention and follow the textbook!
Took this professor this semester! I was a bit wary but her class is pretty straightforward. I wish she graded a bit earlier (she's a late grader) but overall I loved the material we used and it really helped with my understanding of marriage and family within sociology! Her grading is fair, I'd say to ALWAYS elaborate and pay attention to detail.
For once, discussion posts were tolerable. Instructions were clear, and the work was very manageable. I can't speak for her in-person classes, but online definitely went well. The only peeve I can imagine people having is her tendency to procrastinate with grading. Don't worry, though. You'll be fine.
