She's not a very good film teacher, because she teaches film like a literature class. plus most of the work is on the internet and we are left to teach ourselves. but she's hot
careful with her. She is not easy with grade.
I took Jen Hopp's online Short Stories and Novels class and had a lot of fun. It is a really fun and interesting class. The choices of books and short stories were great. It was fun reading all new books that I would have never read on my own. =)
Took her over the internet which made the class a little bit easier but she is tough. Good class and she lets you know what she wants.
Great teacher! I really enjoyed the class.
She has favorites. If she doesn't like you, you will not be graded fairly or even treated with respect.
Online course. Fair grading, fast response time on questions. Generally helpful but does not give any example papers to better clarify assignments. If you did well in ENG 110, take this online. 2 hours weekly keeps you up to date. If you struggle with composition, take it as a lecture.
Unfairly graded my paper on Iraq because it was a very heated subject at the time, but the people I showed it to thought it was good. I ended up dropping the course and took a different teacher. Please avoid.
the worst teacher i have had in college. she teaches it like a high school class. her test are very unclear and she favors students like fat people like cake
Tests were tough if you didn't study, just make sure you follow her exact guidelines when doing her assignments and projects. She was o.k....I won't take her again though.
She taught this class like it was Lit. She also refused to watch anything somewhat suggestive or gorey. She also had long conversations about Star Wars with this one geek in the corner while we just sat and waited. Don't take her, it will ruin movies for you.
Do not take this class if you want a good experience. She is the worst teacher you could have for film. The tests are all essays, and she grades them unfairly because she thinks that everyone thinks of film class as a blow off. You can study your butt off and she will still give you a low score.
she is not that helpful
This was the best class i've ever taken! She was very helpful and made her classes fun. I would suggest this class to anyone who likes to read.
Took this course ONLINE. She was very clear, and kept to the syllabus she posted the first day of class. Easy to follow and very nice. Definately would take another online class with her.
I only had her for a few weeks (then she left to have her baby :) ) but I miss her already! She has creative ways to get you thinking argumentatively, and her lectures are very detailed and informative. She is very obviously in love with what she teaches. If she comes back next semester or next year I will take her Gothic Lit class!
Everything was very excellently exhibited. She is a wonderful teacher. She did everything well. At the beginning she told you what she wanted and if you didn't do it you didn't do it, but it wasn't her fault. Whoever thought this class was hard is intellectually inept, because Ms. Hopp is great!!! FIVE STARS OUT OF FOUR!!!
This prof is extremely picky and her assignments are abnormal. She grades really hard.. I do not recommend!!
ONLINE Very encouraging, always clear, quick email response time. I HATE ENGLISH, BUT Love Prof. Hopp. So much that I signed up for her lit class!
Tought the class if you were going to be a Film Major. Basically a GPA lower. She is rude her, assigments are ridicilous. Worst teacher I have had so far at ICC. If you have her as a teacher for Film I suggest switching ASAP.
Had as an online class, but even over the internet, she was fun and not too demanding.
She is a very nice woman but not a very good teacher. She expects way too much especially regarding attendance. Her tests are fine but she grades very unfairly. I suggest NOT taking her class.. she will build you up to thinking you have a good grade and then shoot you down last minute.
This class is fun and she rocks at it! She expects a lot out of you, but I like that in teachers. If you dont want to word, dont take this class. She is so easy if you let it be. She is super helpful and responds to emails quickly.

She is a very nice person, but a hard teacher. You have to work hard to get through and follow all the instructions. I took online in the summer, and there were NO peer reviews!! A bit picky with grading, even when my mom (who knows her grammar) said it was okay.
Worst teacher I have ever had! Even though I took the class online, I have never came across a teacher like this. Do not recommend at ALL!!!
Took this class online and she was awful! Even though I did her assignments the way she explained, I was still wrong somehow. Has favorites, even online. Very unfair grader. Likes to give lots of busywork! Don't take her!
Gives a clear plan for the class, provides you with everything that you need to pass the class with a high grade. All asignments and quizzes are posted at beginging of unit and she allows you to do them at your own pace. Very heavy on english use in essays. Does a good job of presenting material would recommend class
Overall good class. Be prepared to work! You always have a paper to write. She's helpful and open to suggestions as long as you are putting in the effort. Attendance is required and necessary, but you get several in-class work days. Topics are broad so you can write about what interests you. Be involved in class!
BSucks! Was supposed to have a B, however she is the only one in the whole Ischool that follows the attendance policy. Personally, I feel that if you can do the Twork and don't need to be taught it, then why the hell should you be required Cto go to class. Worst teacher I've ever had and I don't normally have a problem Hwith teachers.
I took this class online and it was a positive experience. Quite a bit of work is involved in this class and you must stay on top of the reading each week as there are quizes each week. Overall, I would rate my experience as very positive and I thought she graded fairly.
I took this class online and it was a lot of work. I did get an A in the class, but I spent literally HOURS doing my papers. If you stay on schedule and work hard you can get an A. She is helpful and will answer questions if you ask.
I took this as an online course. I suggest that you take it online only if you have good time management skills and you have the time to devote to a "real" lecture class. Hopp was very quick to respond and extremely clear in her instructions. She was a good online teacher. But there was alot of papers/short assignment/peer reviewing involved.
Tons of work! You need great time management for this class. She takes film very seriously, but is generally a fair grader. She is very quick to respond to any questions. If you have a lot of extra time I would recommend this class otherwise stay clear.
She takes the class too seriously with attendance and with the group project which is ridiculous! I had to drop because she refused to grade my project because the other group members didn't participate. For someone whose favorite movie is Charlie's Angels she surely doesn't have the taste to back up her arrogance and ignorance.
This instructor is very supportive and encourages participation by everyone. Overall, this makes for a multifaceted learning experience.
Professor Hopp brings so much information to the student...meaning that if you want to learn, you certainly have the opportunity. She's very helpful, and she does make it clear from the start that her courses require work. If you don't mind earning your good grades, than I suggest taking her classes. You really can't go wrong if you work at it!
I do not think she is aware students have other classes and priorities to do also. There is WAY to much work involved for this survey course. You have to be able to write papers every week, read books within days, discussion boards everyday, and daily quizzes. Also way to many rules she's VERY picky about minute details such as spacing and grammar
She is a very erratic grader. One paper will be an A while another paper may have the same amount of minor mistakes, but she will bump it all the way down to a C inexplicably. You never know what random grade you'll get. Her instructions are not always clear, which can affect your work. I'm sure she's a very nice person, but avoid her as a teacher.
Took this as a hybrid course. It was A LOT of work. Do all your work and on time, and you will be fine. Make sure you participate in discussion online and in class. I'm just glad its over because this was the class that took up all my time this semester. She has many rules & requirements so make sure you know them thoroughly or get points taken off
This class is east but time consuming for a online course. She grades fairly easy but the amount of tests, quizzes, projects, discussion board comments, and papers seems that shes taking this a little to serious at times. P.s. it's your responsibility to find all the films if you take the online class. Hopefully you know how to torrent.
Easy 'A' if you keep up with the reading. First time I have actually enjoyed a LIT class!
Love the professor and the class. Easy course but you have to set aside the time to do the reading. Diverse selection of novels and short stories.
A lot of work for an easy class. Do not take it as a hybrid unless you are willing to do the work. 3 quizzes, 4 discussion boards, and test per unit. And she assigns a paper and final folder assignment on last day of class.
I took this class as a hybrid. I enjoyed it. A lot of work. She's very helpful and very nice. I enjoyed her youtube bits. Overall good class. Not that tough of a grader.
Summer online class: Only take this class if you have time to read the books she assigns, that is the only way you will pass this class. It is made up of short 10 point quizzes over general information about storylines-nothing nitty-gritty. There are 4 papers, midterm, and final. If you read the books for understanding you will pass with an A.
She is very demanding. I took this class as an online 12 week course. We had to read a book every two weeks, Some times in one week, post to at least 2 discussion boards sometimes more, take 1-3 quizzes, and write a paper (there were four throughout the semester) weekly. I wouldn't recommend this class to a full time student with a job.
I took this class as a hybrid course. Only sign up for this class if you feel you would NOT procrastinate. She assigns you homework as if you don't have any other classes to focus on. She is a nice teacher, but very demanding at the same time.
Jenn is not about to teach a blow off class, so if that's what you are looking for move along. Not the typical movies I expected to watch, all were very interesting and only disliked a few. This class was hard and extremely stressful, but it was very interesting. I learned quite a bit.
I loved her. She's really nice and helpful and grades fairly. The movies we watched were actually really good ones. I've heard she's a lot more demanding for her online classes, so I suggest taking it in person if you can. She gives extra credit opportunities too. She's pretty great. I'm really glad I took her class.
She couldn't care less what you write in your papers as long as you use MLA citations correctly. Too much writing for an art survey course. You will have a paper to be working on at all times.
I took her class online, quite a bit of work every week but very organized, and straight forward. Every week is pretty typical. Discussion boards, quiz, watch it folder, journal entry and 2-3 major assignments throughout the course. Papers need correct citations and format. Easy class..
We had a lot of reading to do with unrealistic expectations. I ended up looking up synopses in order to do my assignments. The assignments were easy, just very time consuming and long.
Most of the class isn't bad but good god the tests are miserable. 75 minute class and the entire test is "short answer". 2 paragraphs each at least 5 sentences a paragraph. There's at least 8 questions so by the time you are finished (if you finish) then your hand is ready to fall off. Basic film class taught by an english teacher. Pass if you can.
If you think you're going to miss more than 2 days in her class, don't take her. After 2 absences, every 2 absences after that you lose a letter grade in the class. There are extra credit opportunities, but it's not worth the stress. The film class was interesting, but I won't be choosing her as a teacher again. The film 110 book is online though.
I took the summer online class and it was pretty easy, but a lot of work. She gave you 6 days to finish the weekly folder and I usually got it done in 3 days. Lots of reading but she's an easy grader EXCEPT for MLA style on the papers. She also gives you 25 points worth of extra credit
She is very tedious in what she wants for an online class. She doesn't give out a lot of homework, the time she gives is very reasonable and easy to get the work done on time. I have had her for two online classes and I felt they had less work to be done than if I was in a classroom.
I adore Prof Hopp. I took her film course online and she was always very clear about what she was looking for in our work. It's a little more tedious than I expected for a gen. ed. requirement, but it was well worth it in the end. I would take a course with her again in a heartbeat. She really cares about her students and wants them to succeed.
Great teacher. Tough grader. The weekly schedule: paper draft due Mon, peer review due by Wed, Final copy Fri. Discussion boards and journals due on Fri as well. You have to get online daily to show that you're participating, whether you're commenting on a peers DB or doing a small assignment per day.
She's super sweet, and very caring! You'll love her! Lots of papers, and the quzzes/tests weigh heavily on the textboook and lecture content.
If you take this class while taking others, good luck. She requires so much for an online general class that I was barely making deadlines some weeks due to the 4 other classes I was taking. She was also very passive aggressive in her feedback sometimes. I despised how if you wrote something she did not agree with, it would be "Really?!?!"
Very organized. Very knowledgeable about the subject
I had Hopp for Film online and it was decent. There were A TON of vocab terms and some were hard to understand but overall it was okay with some extra effort. She's also funny. Just focus, stay organized and you'll do fine. ALSO reply to discussion boards on MULTIPLE days for full credit.
I had Hopp for Lit 111, which is Gothic Literature. I took this class online and really enjoyed it! I thought she seemed like a really fun teacher even though I never met her in real life. I would recommend her as a teacher!
Professor Hopp is easily the best online professor I've ever had at ICC. If she is ever available for any of my future classes I will choose her for sure. She truly cares about her students and wants them to do well in the class, and gives helpful feedback on every assignment. I highly recommend choosing Prof. Hopp for your English courses.
DO NOT TAKE IF YOU DO NOT HAVE LOTS OF TIME FOR CLASS! Please head warning. I didn't and withdrew from class. Discussion Board use is outrageous - 9 posts per week. Decent reading each week. Personal project due once per semester. Accessible through email. Quizzes over reading. While demanding - teacher is passionate and actually tries.
I took Jen Hopp for Film 110. She was very knowledgable about the subject and was always nice. Her tests are all essay questions and are very long so I would recommend studying. On the other hand, I would usually only study right before class and still ace every test somehow. Just participate in class and do the homework!
Definitely made you give it your all to get the grade you want - even though you'll probably get a grade you didn't want (i.e. wanting a B, but got a C instead). Personally would not take her class again, but if required, this professor gets the job done.
I took Film110 in person, and the routine of this class is predictable. When Hopp is compared to other professors in the Film department, it is an easy choice to go with her. Do not procrastinate assignments and make the bare minimum effort to participate. Tests are essay based so be ready to discuss topics more in depth than the quizzes.
Not too bad. Lots of reading, lots of writing. Lots of homework due in the span of a single week. Discussion boards are graded too seriously.
She gave a lot of homework for a simple gen ed class
She likes to challenge you, She wants you to be your best version of yourself. As long as you read the syllabus and the material you will be fine!
I will not be taking any classes by her again. She grades way too harshly and does not even give a grading rubric so you can be sure you're doing things correctly. She also is extremely vague in her instructions and emails. Not any help at all. Really disappointed in this as I was extremely excited to take this class.
I really enjoyed this class. I appreciated the well thought out modules for the week. All long as you read the material and do assignments, I bet you would pass. I will say the midterm was difficult, but I still got a B on it. Please note I had an A when I withdrew. I only did so because I was very sick and had to be in the hospital.
She knew what she was talking about, but her class was just boring. The movie days were a nice break from lecture, but the movie choices weren't the best. Lots of papers or short essay assignments since it is the literature version rather than the art version. She didn't make much effort to make the class fun, and she wasn't really helpful.
Pretty good lectures and really helped us with our papers.
Hopp grades fairly, leaves kind feedback, and clearly loves writing. We covered a lot of content describing the importance of writing, which kinda felt like a circle jerk, but generally the course was laid out super well. The assignments were varied and interesting, and we often got to choose what exactly we wrote about. She made writing enjoyable.
Professor Hopp is always really fun and engaging. I've taken her before and always learn a lot but still have a good time doing it. She also always creates a good atmosphere for her students in the discussion boards. This professor is a very fair grader, just do the work and read the material and you should have no problems passing her classes.
Tried to take 2 online courses with this professor & ended up dropping both of them. I felt that the way she set up her modules in canvas was very nit picky & unnecessarily difficult. With over a full course load of other classes I couldn't give her the expected 9hrs of at home work she was asking for. Barely answered emails and was a tough grader.
This professor gives out multiple exams during the semester! They are timed! One hour, typically 25 multiple choice and 4-5 Essay questions needing two paragraphs. And you get one attempt, there is NO leniency. There is also weekly homework and quizzes. If you are like me, it will be difficult to balance this class w/others and work. Be prepared!
Professor Hopp seems to think she's the last line of defense before students leave college unable to write. She forgets her class is a freshman level comp class that is essentially pointless. Her lack of flexibility in grading and insiten
Quizzes (usually out of 10) are timed as well as exams (typically around 20 multiple choice and 4+ essay Qs, must be 2 paragraphs). Homework=short response. Score cards on each movie watched in class and out (Must work on own time). Vocab heavy terms need to know. 2 papers (tough grader). Not a push off class!!! Completed this class Fall of 2024.
The class starts easy with clear instructions and expectations, but later her feedback contradicts the posted guidelines and becomes confusing. Even when following directions and asking questions, she rarely responds. It later becomes difficult, not from the content, but from poor communication and inconsistencies between grading and expectations.
Took course online. Professor made me feel as if I have never written a paper before in my life. Heavy criticism, rude comments, lack of explanation, difficult grader, unclear requirements, high time commitment. Wouldn't take a course with her again. Worst professor I've had before at ICC.
Took her online FILM110 class. I learned a lot from this course, but it wasn't easy by any means. There were a lot of assignments that usually required A LOT of writing. Her slideshows for each chapter were very helpful and she provides a lot of video examples to go along with new terms, but still felt very challenging for an intro class.
Took this as an easy class for my gen ed and it turned to be the worst decision of my life. Never have I thought a class about movies would make me want to be a college drop out.
This course takes a lot of time/ is tedious in work. Every week there were discussion boards that required paragraphs as responses. Then you had to reply to other but could only do so on certain days. Because her "week" was different than Mon-Fri, students who were busy over the weekend had to squeeze a lot of work into a few days. Lots of reading
She is very strict and she makes no room for mistakes
