hard tests, dumb grading policy
hard grading, doesn't answer your questions clearly and make you confuse, lectures are aight, activing learning assignments are helpful, very hard tests!!!
Extremly Hard Test, and unclear. A class for retaking students. Got many As' in easiness 2.0 ~ 3.0 classes before, but Here hardly getting C. Hope I can give her 0 for easiness. Trust me and dont hurt ur GPA.
TESTS ARE HORRIBLE...tricky, more complex than what she teaches...not just me saying it, even the smarties I talked to agree. I am a normally straight A student and studied A LOT for this class, and failed first 2 tests so have to withdraw. Average for 1st test was 59%... Just be aware of the tests when you sign up for this class.
You have to know the concepts, review the notes thoroughly, and be able to solve the active learning handouts to pass the tests, if not, you will have a hard time.
Just take someone else. The test is not fair.
Where the tests hard? Yes. Did you ever leave the lecture confused? Yes. But really, it's her first semester teaching at SMC and she hasn't really had a chance to develop her style yet. The material is difficult regardless of the test. Yes the 1st exam average was low (see below) but it was low across all the sections. Tough but very helpful.
Honestly the material isn't hard as much as calculus or physics, but she make it harder than that by being unclear and unfair. She seem she cares of her student, but its all act. She love to ruin ur GPA even if the student is top 10% if she doesn't like you. She's cold, rude, unclear. Got no passion to be a professor.
The worst teacher I have ever had in college. The rating sucks.
Nice teacher, very helpful during lectures and responds to emails quickly. Fair, but very unforgiving for anything even a moment late or lab absence. If you actually work you'll get an A but chem is never something you can slide through. Tests can be tricky sometimes, but overall they're reasonable
Dr. Hsieh is a great professor to have. Her explanations, although simplistic at times, are the best way to get acquainted with the material. Don't listen to the people who gave her a low score. I guarantee that they didn't even try to study, or didn't study enough. She is highly approachable and is writing one of my letters of rec!
Great!!! So helpful and clear!
If I were more concerned with my GPA I would probably have nasty things to say. I don't necessarily like her grading, but you learn A LOT. It's a lot of work on your own and you have to devote an adequate amount of time. I think she's really charming and incredibly clear. I recommend her to anyone who's looking to learn.
WOW! that was fun! I fell in love with chem! EASY and FUN class
Dr. Hsieh was a really great teacher in my opinion. I thought she was helpful. The subject matter is not easy; however, I think she explains everything really well. I would take her class again. Plus, she has a really great personality when you get to know her.
grading policy is awful, never gives full credit. require perfect result during the Lab, If you don't like Chemistry. Don't take her.
I think she is a great professor, but I'll admit she's really hard. I studied my butt off and still managed to fail her exams. She is a stickler for perfection, but she does give partial credit which is helpful. She is always willing to help if you ask for it. I ended up dropping her class to perserve my GPA. Take her if you're up for a challenge.
moves to fast! Tests are extremely hard, even for those who are good at Chem. (They are nothing like the homework or lectures.) She is very picky when it comes to labs. She makes you do an assignment before the labs, which takes a while, then she makes you do the lab, and gets all angry if the students don't finish on time. Seriously! Avoid!
Extremely high expectations, I guess since she got her PhD at UCLA. Very strict and picky on labs, homework, quizzes, and tests. Pop quizzes during lab she tries her hardest to use the whole four hours. I forgot to turn in the last page on one of my labs and she wouldn't accept it the next day even though she signed off that it was done in class.
Her grading and her tests may seem a little rough, but she is fair. Like all your classes, you should read ahead to better understand her lectures. She's very willing to help, and you need to put in a lot of effort to do well in this class. I love this class, but then again, chemistry is always fascinating no matter how difficult it gets.
PLEASE READ: for all good students out there wanting to transfer AVOID her. HERE IS WHY: im not saying getting an A is impossible because every teacher gives at least 1 A, BUT she makes the class unecessarily hard. Take Scholefied for Chem 11. unless you legit wanna live eat breathe Chemistry. If you do have her. go into it studying your ass off.
Teaches you like you're in high school, but give tests like you're in grad school. Too difficult of a teacher, and not a good person overall. Don't take her.
Dr. Hsieh is a great person and very approachable, but a HORRIBLE teacher. She could not keep control of my class and the students who took up major class time asking questions that they should know from Chem 10. She got so far behind and ended up rushing through the last crucial lectures the class BEFORE the final. Stressful! Take another teacher!
I loved Dr Hsieh's class. Tests require strong grasp of the material, & she is quite a stickler about accuracy & precision. PP Lectures are thorough but droll at times. She is very helpful & clear. Got a B, but left with a greater knowledge & passion for Chemistry. A is doable, PUT IN THE TIME, abuse the note card. Hindsight... Rec. for Sci. Majors
She's very smart. She knows chem very well. She encourages you to go to her office hours. Very helpful. BUT.. lectures are all PP.. so you fall behind if not careful. tests give you anxiety. ridiculously hard and NO CURVES. ridiculous exams. she needs to take the stick out of her ass. preps you well. don't take if not a science major.
just avoid her ,she's gonna ruin your GPA,her exams are ridiculously hard
extremely acerbic. don't think of getting an A in her class just studying as her taught. ruined both my GPA and my academic plan. if you don't want to get a chem-trauma then avoid her.
She makes the materials unnecessary hard and complicated. If you are as smart as a chemist, good to go. I do not think that a college student is capable to deal with such complex and abstract stuffs. And btw, I really hate the online homework system. It suckssssssssss.
She is organized and knowledgable. If you've taken chem 10, this class is mostly review. However, she neglects and rushes over the few new things that are new and YOU NEED TO LEARN and tests hard on them. The class is like an online class; learn the new material yourself, homework online. She has no empathy. she spends too much time on old material
Dr. Hsieh is one of the sweetest professors I've met, but still, she is INCREDIBLY hard. She's super strict with labs, most of the work you do is inputted online (which is annoying), and her tests are the hardst thing I've ever had to face (school wise). Be aware: tests are nothing like HW problems or examples, and labs are VERY thorough.
Take this class if you want to learn chemistry and really understand what you are learning. This class requires a lot of time and commitment, but if you: put in the time, come to all of labs/lectures you will grow as an individual and can get an A. I am taking her for Chem 12, not easy by any means but very smart and cares about your success.
Most Chem Professors are brilliant PhDs, but what sets Dr Hsieh apart is her ability to understand how explain a topic. For instructors half the battle is to understand where the student is in their confusion and how to guide them back to clarity. Dr Hsieh has this ability mastered.
I got an A in this course. She is hard, but if you work hard, the course materials are not that hard. Do all the saplings and lab reports seriously not just for the points but to consolidate your knowledge. Tests are easier than the saplings. Make sure you know every definition of the theories as she likes essay type questions a lot.
Now that I'm in Chem 12, I truly appreciate Dr. Hsieh's class. Half of my classmates still struggle with basic lab technique and can't remember the necessary material from Chem 11. But those of us who took Chem 11 with her are thriving, because we actually covered the material to an appropriate depth, unlike some of the so-called "easier" teachers
The tests are marathons. Hsieh is a good lecturer, but you have to keep up with the material for her to make sense week to week. If chem isn't easy for you, read the book before lectures, take notes on it, revise your notes after lectures, and again before tests. Stay organized. You need good study habits to get higher than a C in this class.
If you are interested in chemistry take her she is by far one of the best professors I have had throughout my time in college. If you aren't very interested in chem then don't take her she's there to really teach people that are going into chemistry careers and is not for those looking for an easy A
Dr. Hsieh is a great professor. She may be meticulous but she does it for the student's sake. She is passionate about the subject and you will get that from her lectures. Her class is no easy A but she is very approachable and will answer any questions that you have. If you work your butt off in her class, it will pay off, simple as that.
Students with discipline will do the best with her. You will not skate through this class, but in return you get very clear lectures and helpful study aids. The tests were straightforward and manageable. I respect & appreciate her for making us do online hw every week and giving us in class problems, because it drills the material into your brain.
She is so tough Grader. You should rewrite all the lab otherwise you could not take the lab. She is unreasonable hard.
She is a good teacher but UNREAAAAAASONABLY difficult!!! you will have millions of quizes and homework, no problem if they are reasonable, it would help you study more and learn better, but no matter how hard you study, quizes and exams are going to be harder, as if she enjoys torturing students!!! if you care about your GPA, don't take her.
If you're a chem or life science major, take this class. It will prepare you amazingly for what is to come and the upper level courses. But if you're taking It as a prerequisite and aren't going to take another Chem class after this, look for a different teacher. She will kill your GPA and make you work your butt off. Really cares, but so so hard
She is a great teacher, you just need to work hard to do well in her class.
Lecture: Overcomplicates even the simplest concept. Too fast (covered an entire chapter in a day!) Extra credit: she gives only 2 extra points! Help: I asked her to check if my report was okay, and she refused to look at it cuz "she only looks at it once". Tests: Hard and never cover what she says it's gonna be on them. Please don't take!!!
Professor Hsieh is a great chemistry professor. Her exams are tough but not impossible if you study hard. She is willing to help you as long as you ask her during office hours or after class. Overall her lectures are clear and as long as you keep up with the material you'll do well in her class.
She made a subject that I adore so much into a nightmare. Yes, chemistry is hard but this is general chemistry and her expectations were beyond unreasonable. All labs are hand written or typed and the tests are 25% multiple choice and the rest are word problems or essay questions. I did everything I could to succeed but NOTHING meets her expectatio
Dr. Hsieh is a phenomenal professor. Yes her class is difficult, it's college, and its a STEM. She gives you opportunities for extra credit, drops your two lowest lab scores, the lowest quiz score and replacing your lowest midterm score with a better grade on that section of the final. Put in the time that a STEM course requires and you'll be fine.
I think that Dr. Hsieh is the best teacher I have ever had. That being said, I took chem 11 and 12 with her and got a B both times. If you do exactly what she says, you will learn chemistry SO WELL I PROMISE. But you need to work for it. She expects the best, and is incredibly, impeccably strict about her policies.
Yes her exams are tough, but they're there to challenge you and to get you thinking out of the box. If you get down to it, the questions are multi step problems and if youre putting in the hours of studying for a STEM course, you should be able to pass. I took her twice, which says something about her teaching style.
I took Professor Hsieh for chem.11 and 12 and got a B both semesters. If she were a bad professor I wouldn't have taken her again. Her class isn't easy, after all it is chemistry and we are in college. Exams aren't impossible you just have to study hard in order to pass her class. If you want to truly learn chemistry I recommend her to you.
I took Dr. Hsieh for chem 12 and thought she was a good teacher. I had a harder chem 11 professor so I thought her policies were fair and straightforward. My advice is to do all of the homework and do the pre lab assignments even though they are not graded. She's a fair teacher if you work hard. If you want to skate by, don't take her.
I took Hsieh for Chem 11 and Chem 12, and really enjoyed her teaching. I got both A's in her courses. I've taken 3 chem classes at UCI and passed all w/ Cs. But taking her made everything clear and understandable. She takes difficult concepts and transforms them into relatable topics. Her tests are involved and gives weekly quizzes, so study hard.
I thought she was a great professor. She explains things in depth well. It's not an easy course by any means. You must put the work in to get the A. HW is not required but I recommend because tests are way tougher than the HW. Go to her office hours for questions on the HW and do not fall behind and you will get an A. Overall, I really enjoyed her.
This is the hardest class I have ever taken in my entire life. She expects a lot weekly quizzes, lab notebook which is rewriting the entire lab procedure into a notebook and if you dont you cant do the lab, post labs are due every monday and there are pre-lab quizzes. I do not recommend this professor unless this is the only class you are taking.
Her lectures are amazing and very clear, but she is a super tough grader. I'd take her again.
Dr. Hsieh understands her students and is always willing to give help when asked. Do the practice problems, go to office hours, and review your notes. If you put the work in, you should do well in the class.
Hsieh is one of the top-3 profs I've EVER had. I suck at chem, and she made it make sense. You will work harder than you've ever worked in a science class. But if you want to truly get this subject, take her. HARD grader, but do 2X the # of homework probs, all old exams and rework tests (plus go to office hours), you'll be fine. The best there is.
Dr. Hsieh is a very tough professor. Even so, she is phenomenal. If you really want to learn Chemistry, she is recommended. Please do not take this if you are not a STEM major and/or don't plan on continuing Chemistry. Gives a Lab Quiz before every lab, which is extremely annoying. Exams are extremely hard. 2 lab reports dropped.
tough class. dr hsieh is a very tough grader with very high expectations. pay attention, take notes and GO TO LECTURE. i
read it often and its true-Dr. or not- she does not know what she is talking about. (over)extremely uptight about classroom behavior. she has her CHEM down but 0 teaching skill which makes moderate materials unbearable hart. treats students like numbers in a register. I was the opposite of impressedspired by her. she fails as Prof-not students
Too much out of what students need to learn for the class Need more focus on specifics...
One of the best professors I have had so far in college. Exams were pretty reflective of the lectures. But she did make it very difficult. Not at all an easy class and I didn't do anything but this class for 6 weeks. Lots of Extra credit and labs unnecessarily hard. Go to class, do the EC, read the book, do all HW problems and every assignment
Incredible teacher if you really are interested in the content. I worked harder in this class than I have ever worked in a STEM class and barely made it through. Get ready for a tough class and know that you will come out the other end stronger and better prepared for the rest of your journey in academia.
Exams are very difficult and the lectures do not prepare you enough for the tests. She uses powerpoint to lecture, nothing extraordinary. Labs must be completed in a journal in which students must copy the ENTIRE lab procedure in order to do the lab. Prof doesnt seem to enjoy teaching and isnt very sympathetic. I would avoid her, not a good prof.
Very challenging class but mainly bc she really cares about her students deeply understanding the material. She's clearly aware of the vigor of her class and makes an effort to provide extra help. Took with calc and 2 other classes (nearly died) but the labs, hw, and ec boosted me up A LOT. Still recommend not taking with another tough course tho
I tried everything possible in my power to pass the class, but she was incredibly difficult. Nothing met her expectations. You have to write down every procedure in the lab manual and materials in your lab notebook. You can't print it out.
Prof Hsieh is very reasonable and great at explaining concepts. Don't get me wrong, she assigns TONS of assignments on a weekly basis. I annotated every lecture, did all the homework, rarely read the book and finished with a 95 (while taking two other STEM classes and working 15+ hours a week). You just have to put in the work. OH and OFFICE HOURS!
She understands that you're human. She gave me lots of time and care when I talked to her about my stress. But, her exams are deadly. My average was 40%. Her lectures are not helpful. There are too many exam questions. They are multipart. All free response! Each Q is 5 HW questions combined. No way to prepare for this. Take her with few classes!
Best Chemistry teacher I had at SMC. Took her for Chem 11 and Chem 12. Works so many sample questions during lecture- very clear. Really makes sure you understand the concept behind what you are doing. Very helpful, nice and interesting.
She is a fair professor you want to have for your Chem 11. You will find her exam very easy if you can master the hw problems and lecture contents. I finished her class with 97% while taking three stem classes. It is definitely manageable! You just need to put a little bit of effort you will see A on your grade book. Going to office hours helps too
Dr. Hsieh was accessible, communicative, and organized. When students were overwhelmed by a test format, she listened and adjusted the format for the next exam. Like any stem course, you have to put in the work. Dr. Hsieh's lectures were engaging and clear and were split into shorter videos which made them easier to watch.
Professor provides good slides and examples to clarify the concepts. However, she gives lots of homework; every exam is harsh because they cover the homework and lab work. The best strategy is to be ready for any problem; be equipped with a fast calculator. Final exam is comprehensive and you could drop a whole grade . The book is no help.
If you are a chemistry enthusiast this would be a great pick. However, if you just want to get by to fulfill requirements to transfer/prerequisite do not waste your time with this teacher. Strict, assign lots of HW but it does not show in her tests, gives out vague answers, difficult to approach, in Labs good luck, you will get minimum and vague.
Professor Hsieh gave us big help in homework club meetings; moreover, she gave the students the greatest encouragement to overcome the psychological obstacles they encountered in their studies. Exams were challenging, but please don't be afraid; all your hard work will be rewarded. Trust me; you will regret it if you miss this professor in Chem 12.
I really enjoyed Dr. Hsieh, she cared for her students and how they were doing in the class. She's a great professor and wants you to actually learn the material, you have to do the work to succeed. If you skim the readings, watch lectures, take notes, join homework club/office hours, do homework, and study then you'll be golden. Highly Recommend!
This class was really challenging for me as Chemistry is not my best subject. Professor Hsieh was always available when I needed guidance or help with understanding a concept. Her homework club saved me after I did horribly on the first quiz. Do the homework and study example problems for tests and quizzes and nothing will be a surprise.
She is a great teacher and is very passionate about teaching, but the class is very difficult. I did not do good on the first test because I was only going off of the homework and the lectures. You must do every extra practice problem if you want the A. She is always there for you even if you are not talking about chemistry. Great Teacher!
Dr. Hsieh makes you write LONG lab reports by hand. However, having Dr. Hsieh for the lab portion of Chem 12 was the best experience I've had. She is very casual and not very harsh on people who mess up. Pretty generous with grading and helped me schedule a makeup final when I accidentally forgot to go to the normal one. Easy to contact.
Prof Hsieh is super sweet. She really wants her students to succedd and she is willing to help you though every step of the process. Exams are very fair- mix of multiple choice and show your work- and you get a LARGE note card to use on the exam. This class is a lot of work but Prof Hsieh makes it very managable.
If I could only take one chem professor for the rest of my life it would be Hsieh. Truly cares about you as a person and not just as a student. Offers so much support to help succeed in the class, but you have to put in the work.
Take her over anybody else for Chem 12! Chemistry is hard but she makes it understandable. The exams are very fair if you study what's in the PowerPoints and re-do the homework. She's very understanding and I seriously can't recommend her enough. TAKE HER!!
She was okay. She is a very nice lady, but she speaks so so very quietly that nobody can hear what she says. If she got one of those microphones she would be way better; it is very hard to learn because you can't hear her explanation or what she is doing. Lots of extra credit, some group work and homework cub for those who struggle.
Professor Hsieh is very kind, and does a lot of work in and out of class. She was a good teacher, and was very motivational when the class felt hard. She rarely curves, or inflates assignments, so while you likely will learn a lot, your grade probably won't be the best reflection of that. She always remained accessible, and tried to work with us.
Doesnt drop any tests, strict grader, kind and nice teacher. I learned a lot but I would never take her again due to her not dropping any tests and not having any worthwhile extra credit. The other teachers in the chemistry department dropped tests, and made the class more amicable when more than half the class was going to get a C.
Awful. Her lectures are good and she's nice enough, but her exams are terrible. Nearly impossible to finish within allotted time and extremely difficult. Doesn't drop any either. Study all you like, you'll still be surprised. Finding out what you'll be tested on is half the battle. No study guide provided.
Try not to take this professor if you can. Exams/Final are worth 64% of your grade and she teaches off slideshows only in typical STEM fashion. Lab is great and a grade booster and there's a ton of extra credit, but she doesnt curve, drop, or put fair questions on the exam that anybody can predict. Takes longer to grade stuff than english profs.
I had her as a sub and I really liked her. If you show you want to do well she will help you a lot. She is pretty hard and there are easier teachers but she is the best teacher out of all the chem teacher at SMC for sure.
I believe the Physics dept needs its own dept chair, she doesn't put any time into Physics. Also if you see how poorly she runs the Chem dept, its no wonder SMC chem dept is almost as bad as its math. Physics is a bit better then both. Go to LACCD if you want to take your Math or Stem Classes.
