She's a very cool teacher. Very easygoing and her class is very relax and mostly group work. Sometimes she's not prepared but most of the time she's there and teaching.

Hurley's class was easy for me, but you have to do well on your rough drafts. Or she'll make photocopies, X out your name,& have the whole class proff your paper. She's very political, careful what you say. She likes debates & ppl who particpate.

Ms. Hurley is the type of teacher you look forward to seeing on a cold Monday morning, or any time really. She's easy to relate to because of her young age. She engages students from all levels and gets them to participate. Very fun, funny, and smart.

EASY CLASS. Hardly ne writing cause she hates to read it. Loves politics and talks about it a lot though doesn't relate to eng. Group discussions and peer feedback on essays. Took AP Eng. in HS n it was a lot tougher than this class. Hw is clear, lecture sometimes boring but friendly and nice.

Easy class to pass. I think students that fail this class either don't attend class (She takes points off after the 3rd absence), don't do their essays, or really suck at English in general. Fair teacher and very lenient. Don't take advantage of her because she is a sweetheart! That's just wrong.

lots of discussions and no busy work. not exactly your traditional english class. this class is more oriented toward reflection and analysis. she's very helpful if you go see her in her office. we read books and see movies that are more contemporary and deal with issues within our society.

She is such a nice teacher. It is a very easy class to go through. She teaches us how to express our ideas and it is a really fun class to be in. Not many homework assignments, the writing assignments werent long at all and we didnt have a final. I highly recommend taking her class.

I can't believe i got an A in this class. i crewed up my first in class essay, but i felt lucky that i didnt drop the class. She's such a sweetheart, go see her during her office hour if you need any help. If you work hard, she will give you a fair grade, maybe even better than you expect.

She really cares about her students. and i cant believe she gave me a B which wasnt something that i expected :) must have been the power of EC and all that dancing and singing that we did in the group project. LOL

Very peaceful, laid back and almost like therapy. she wants lots of class discussion. She loves what she teaches and teaches u 2 love it too. If u want an A, all you have 2 do is follow her assignment (which is clearly explained) very closely and put good thought into it. Use a thesaurus & simple keywords from the book. Great class, great woman!

She didn't assign a lot of internet hw at all! In fact, she only requires that you post ONE response on a bulletin board a week. However, the discussions are very boring. She doesn't teach very much. She just listens and says "Oh, ok..." and calls on the next person.

This class was one of the best I've taken at Ohlone. The material was well chosen, the discussions were engaging, and Prof. Hurley was always friendly and willing to listen. Her comments really helped me see literature in a whole new way.

i loved her! she's young and sweet. her class seemed more like a group therapy- we'd only have a couple articles to read every week, which we'd discuss the next week, some papers, and a couple in class essays. she's rad and pretty easy.. definately strikes your interst for english. take her!

I wasnt really excited about taking 101B cuz I had heard alot of bad stories from others, but after taking this class with her I must say I very much enjoyed it. She knows what she is teaching, the homework might seem a bit too much, but at the end its for your own good and the readings are all very interesting. One of the best Professors at Ohlone

She is an awesome teacher. There was no required textbook & all readings are on her online blog. Homework responses everyday but not graded by each assignment. The material is very interesting & dealt with current events. She's very helpful and nice. She has opened my eyes to the world around me. I recommend her but do your work & you'll be fine.

Loved her class! Very helpful & wants to do everything she can to help you improve as a writer. Just ask for help & she is more than willing to. All interesting topics discussed: healthcare, election, U.S. industrialization of food. only 1 inclass write, but she let us take it home to revise aftewards. Final was to turn-in research paper.

Hard grader with a good amount of homework. Only 3 graded essays and a research report. Spend all your time on the essays, they really count, and especially the research report. I recommend having her look over each essay. She ended up boosting me somewhat and I got an A. She is cool overall and taught us a lot. She has a nice butt too.

She's a wonderful teacher. Read the longest book ever, william faulkner novel ughh but she made it enjoyable.

She is really nice, but her class lacks structure. All we do is read articles about the environment and energy and write about it. She grades kind of hard on the essays too.She does help you improve your grade if you set up an appointment with her to work on your essay.Her class is boring because the topics we talk about I dont find interesting.

I took her for 101B and C. She is a pretty hard teacher and you REALLY have to work for your grade. But if you meet with her she is extremely helpful and understanding. If she offered more classes I would definitely take them. I'm not really a fan of writing a small paper every time for homework, but it's part of class. HIGHLY Recommended

Took her for 101A and went back for 101C one of the best teachers I've had at ohlone. Yeah classes aren't super structured but it makes it way more interesting. You get what you put into this class much more helpful than most teachers here. Most of thereading is online articles which is really nice. Very current topics, really enjoyed both courses

Easy, fun class. Don't have to buy book, which is nice...interesting discussions for sure. Lots of political undertones though, which is annoying. What can you expect from a bay area college though?

Basically, this class is amazing unless you hate seminar classes (you prefer lectures) or you hate participating. She is easy- going, smart, and has an amazing butt. If you need help she will give it to you. She assigns a good amount of reading and writing, but all of it easy. I learned a lot and had a lot of fun...too bad she isn't single...

Professor Hurley was able to open up my mind to new thoughts, and taught me critical thinking to a great extent. She's very clear on her instructions, conducts really great class discussions, and is interested in everyone's opinion. She does ask for homework every class session, but this is just to keep the class on the same page. Great teacher!

she's a great teacher. no book needed, but prepare to print many articles. essays are straight forward, i don't know why people say it's hard. apply what you've learned from 101a & b. no research papers, just essays which are short. loved the class. failed presentation (due to irrelevancy of my group) and still got an A because of my essays.

Very nice teacher, this class was very easy! However, class can be sometimes boring. But just read what she assigns and do the work, and you will have no problem. I am currently taking her again for 101B.

Hurley is a really awesome teacher. She is super chill and tries to help everyone. If you have a question, ask her. She'll try her best to answer it. There is a lot of reading in her class, and a lot of discussions. It is really interesting if you actually read though. Two in-class writings. Not really any homework. Super nice teacher.

Ms. Hurley is super nice & kind. She really cares about her students. There is a lot of writing/typing/reading involved but I feel like that's obvious for any English but it is a lot. She grades somewhat hard but she does it to get you prepared. This class was difficult, but I feel like its worth it.

The only professor I have came across that really cares about her students and instead of highly criticizing them about their writing skills, encourages them and gives second chances. Took her first 151RW class and its clear that she fought hard to keep this class despite what the college is saying.

Coming into this class i didn't know what to expect but this course is new and she convinced the dean to keep this class because she believes in her class. Prof hurley should be a motivational speaker. Her class is like no other.

Dedicated. The "Mr. Miyagi" of lesson plans. You think you're learning one thing and then "BAM!" you're a Karate master. She engenders confidence that allows her students to participate without judgement. Conversational without leading. Great instructor. Puts up with more than I would.

Best teacher ever. You have to put the work in to get an A but she is the most amazing teacher I ever had. She lets you know she deeply cares about you. The class atmosphere is incredible. Take her class! Top 3 best professors I've had, she's very easy going and kind. Much better to take this one class then to do separately. One presentation in the semester but don't worry, you will do the presentation with 2 other people. Not your standard presentation either, you will direct the class in the studies for part of the class period.

She charges her students with positive energies. Her reading materials are very interesting, and they help me to understand people in an effective way. By taking her class, I almost have fixed my problem of awkward English expression. Her class is the point of significance in my learning of English.

I had taken this class Spring 2016, there is a lot of interesting reading articles involved. There were 4 essays in this class which are pass or no pass. You have to come to class and participate in the discussions. She is not hard if you read all articles assigned and engage in class discussions.

One of the greatest teachers on campus. She is really helpful and tries her best to make you feel included in class discussions and does her best to help you pass. Lots of reading, but all of them are good reads that arouse curiosity and keep you entertained. Do the readings, participate and you'll pass.

It is beyond breathe of words on how to describe this professor. She is truly inspirational, and a change of the teaching. She is the generation of professors that genuinely care. She is extremely open to any manner of English and will tailor herself to understand your skills. She is a very-very lenient grader. Easy B, but show passion for A.

Awesome and cares. Most work was done at home and classes were discussions mainly. Don't trip too much about the presentation as its a class discussion. I personally hate her "contract grading" (basically you don't have any grade until the end bc she has to give one). You should do the readings as they all lead to topics for essays. Clear due dates

Hurley believes really strongly in encouraging a "growth mindset". She guaranteed our class that as long as we did all the work (a few essays, a presentation, and an essay revision) we would get at least a B. She was very supportive and pushed the class to go for A's. Essays and class discussions were based on articles and books assigned in class.

She's a very caring and generous teacher. I would recommend you take this class for English 101C, as it has taught me a lot of valuable lessons.

Her grading system helps to focus on learning instead of stressing out about grades. Also, if you have a perfect attendance you can skip the final. If you've missed a class you can do an extra credit activity, like seeing a play, and still skip the final.

This teacher is amazing that she has thrown out traditional grading which allowed me to focus on the skill of writing better using the homework assignment. You should be good if you do the reading because that and the homework sets up your essay's. Also great discussions in class - brought out the best for our whole class

One the best professors I've had. English isn't my favorite subject so going into an english class makes me feel uneasy. Doesn't show grades till the end but gives guidelines to follow for the letter grade you want. She cares about her students and wants them to succeed. There were only essays due to the weekly writing hmwk but its super easy.

Professor Hurley is the sweetest and most caring professor I've had at Ohlone. She had us talk about some interesting and challenging topics in class and chose the most interesting books that I have recommended to friends. She doesn't tell you your grade until the end of class but she tells you on the syllabus how to get the grade you want.

I am so happy that I took Professor Hurley before checking the rating here. Professor Hurley has a secret grading that she won't tell u because she believes grading put pressure on a student. If you do everything that the professor has assigned for homework and get a checkmark on Canvas, you will get B for the semester. Tip: the homework is easy.

Professor Hurley only gives you feedback on your work without grades. She uses this way to encourage us to challenge ourselves instead of focusing on the result. If you want to pass this class, just finishing all assignments. However, if you want to get an A, you must work hard on this class, and let her see your progress!

Professor Hurley was amazing. I noticed a lot of low/ bad reviews and that DOES NOT correlate with professor Hurleys intent/ motives. I had her for three other courses and she not only provided immaculate feedback, but she went above and beyond to help students find their weaknesses/ flaws. Professor Hurley is so caring. She's changed her way of grading in the last couple years. She doesn't give scores, but she simply gives credit or no credit, depending on how well you did your work. You can email her if you're afraid of not knowing your grade. If you participate in class and do the hw, it's an easy A. There are group projects!

She is incredibly understanding about extending deadlines and while she grades on a basis of completion rather than letter grades, as long as you put in effort, you will benefit from the class and pass. I took Professor Hurley for credit, she is a good teacher and encourages a growth mind set instead of fixed mindset. I tried to take all her classes after this one (101A and 101C) but she was being re-scheduled every time. Fun fact was that I took one of her classes many years ago and I just rediscovered she was my teacher.
