The content of the course itself can be dry, but she tries her best to make it clear and adds humor sometimes. Her tests are fair, honestly just read the book and lecture notes. Her weekly quizzes via Bb and two papers are cushions for your grade. She's still new to teaching and compromises well with students' requests for help and review.Thumbsup!
It is imperative that you read the book and actually work through and highlight important information. If you don't, you will not do well on her test...which can be pretty tough. She gives us weekly quizzes on BB which aren't too bad! Make sure you go to class because some of the info in the book might not be needed on the actual test.
Great teacher, very personable, nice, and funny. As far as the class layout, 2 papers (Easily graded, if you do them, you get 100% on them), a quiz for every chapter (not too bad, the book is needed for this.) and 4 tests (I never got below a 70%) All-in-all she makes a not so fun class pretty interesting.
She's super nice and tries to make the class as interesting as possible even though the topic itself is rather boring. She's very helpful and clear but her tests aren't that easy. To do well on the tests I'd say you really need to read the book and make notes from it and come to class. She gives mini quizzes on BB and 2 papers that are easy, though
All around she's a pretty good professor. She's incredibly helpful outside of class if you need it and makes the class as interesting as she possibly can. You do need to read the textbook and attend class in order to do well.
For her first time teaching this class she did a pretty good job. I managed a B, mostly because of the weekly online quizzes and me not keeping up with them. Read the book for sure. The material isn't that interesting but she tries her best to make it fun.
Prof. Joy-Gaba is a very good teacher. She is very thorough in her explanations and is willing to help anyone who needs it. The workload is manageable and her tests are fair. Just read the chapters and look over the notes. She takes a dry subject and makes it fun. I recommend her to everyone.
Absolutely the best professor I've had this year! Makes dry material very interesting with very clear powerpoints, plenty of exercises and examples, and really gets the class involved. Tests are very fair and she lays everything out for you to succeed! TAKE HER!!!
Really does make things interesting. She assigns two papers that are pretty easy, weekly quizzes that are okay if you follow along with the notes and at least skim the book. Tests aren't bad. She gives a pretty good study guide before each one.
She is one of the easiest teachers you will have. She makes material interesting and very clear in class. She posts all of her powerpoints online and doesn't take attendance, so you never have to go to class. Her tests are very fair and come straight from the slides and supplemented from the book. Never went to class, got an A. Take her!!
Dr. Joy-Gaba was an excellent professor. You DO need to attend classes. There are about 15 points for in-class activities. She does not tell you when those in-class activities will take place, so BE THERE! Tests are fair and quizzes aren't too bad. Study the power point slides, and you'll be fine! Highly recommend taking this class!
Dr. Joy-Gaba was a great teacher. She brought energy, excitement and most importantly respect to class everyday. Hard tests, but there is padding with papers, online quizzes and in class assignments.
She is a good teacher. Going to class definitely helps your grade, as a lot of the stuff isn't completely understandable from just reading her power points. Her test material is very clearly what she goes over in class. The final is a significant amount harder than the previous tests :) She uses examples from her life to make class understood& fun.
Joy-Gaba is the best. She encourages you to attend class, but for the most part it's not necessary, aside from a few unannounced in class assignments. Tests are challenging, but are completely doable if you study power points and study guides. Textbook may be helpful, but i never opened mine. Recommend taking her. also teaches Experimental Methods
Show up to class, take notes. Create flashcards that you can go back and add stuff to. I didn't do this until halfway through the course. I had no interest but to fulfill my concentration, but it was interesting. She's very pretty as well, but her cat stories get ridiculous :D Great at teaching and cares, HIGHLY RECOMMEND if you want learn.
Go to class because she gives random in class assignments. Use the book if you need more examples, but she gives you the gist in lecture. I really enjoyed the way she taught. She is sweet and really cares about the success of her students. Joy-Gaba is a hip gal!
Great instructor! Does her best to make a boring subject interesting
This is my third class having her and I love the way she lectures. Shes young and has a lot of energy and is super willing to help if you need it. her tests are hard but if you go to class and study the book with her notes youll do fine
Young and energetic. She keeps the class interesting which is why I have no problem going. Her wording on tests and quizzes can be a bit tricky and a lot of times the material overlaps so its easy to get confused. But all in all, not a hard class. She occasionally refers to material in the textbook but most info comes from lecture
She's okay. Young and nice. Sometimes she's funny. Really good taste in music. Tests are tricky. Weekly quizzes, tricky, too. I didnt study that much, still passed. Easy material. Go to class and you'll get at least a B.
She is very energetic and funny but she can come across as a jerk sometimes. She is good at responding to emails in a timely manner. Her tests and quizzes aren't that easy. You need to read the book and attend every class to get an A.
GREAT PROFESSOR! She is very young and motivated. She truly cares about her students. Test are tricky. Go to class and you'll get at least a B.
She is extremely helpful. Attendance isn't mandatory but she does have a few in class assignments throughout the semester and you get everything you need for the test through her lecture so i would recommend attending every class. Tests are very clearly related to the material she teaches.
She plays music before every class, so that's cool! She is young, so she understands what its like to be a college student these days. Tests are multiple choice; online quizzes; random in-class assignments; book is hard to read though. Just go to class!
Great professor, she tries her best to make a hard and boring subject fun and easier to understand. In class assignments really help boost your grade. Her powerpoints are straightforward and really beneficial for the test. Book is confusing and didn't help me much, her notes were better.
Your grade is based on the effort you put into studying which is very important. cant wing her test. test are about 40/50% multiple choice and 60/50% open answer. attendance is optional but 20 points account for in class assignments so it would be wise to attend. Dont need text. post slides and study guides on BB.
Well...what everyone else said & an added note - be prepared for the final, unlike the other three exams, it's about a third of multiple choice and way more short answer. Her exams are NOT easy, but study a lot and be very prepared and you should be ok. Not an easy class - requires a lot of work on your own. Can't be lazy.
She really cares about her students, and makes an effort to make class interesting, even though the subject matter is not. Her humor is a bit sarcastic, can come across as rude, I just tried to ignore it. You do need to study for the exams, the textbook is an okay resource but not super helpful. I got an A but I worked for it.
Good teacher tries to make class interesting for an otherwise brutal topic (stat testing) hard to keep class up with lab. Lab req to use info from later classes in work due before your taught it.I didn't count against prof glad I took class
Wonderful prof! She is extremely helpful, knowledgeable, and respectful. I had no interest in this class initially, but Dr. JG made it fun. Highly recommend.
317 is hard, but she makes it as painless as possible. Offers extra-credit on tests and final. GO TO CLASS! Missing the in-class assignments really hurts your grade. Also, never skip lab. Getting an A in lab can boost you from a B to an A overall in the class. You can't be lazy, and it's tough, but she's a great professor.
She is a great professor. She relates all material to real life and uses real life examples which is beyond helpful for learning the material. She does random in-class assignments worth pointsattendance. Going to class was essential to getting an A , but class was never boring! Definitely take her!
Dr. Joy-Gaba is very professional and understands what it is like to be a student. She is one of the few professors who actually cares about her students and wants them to do well. She will do whatever she can (ethically and legally of course) to help you.
This class is designed to "weed" out people. It's made to prepare you for the research in graduate school. I think Dr. Joy-Gaba is a terrific option. Great professor and will help you. Make sure you go to office hours and look at your tests.
Love the class. Dr. Joy-Gaba is clear on what will be on her exams and is always willing to help her students. She seems to really care about teaching and it shows.
She's funny, smart and pleasant. 2 papers and 4 exams, one online quiz per chapter, plus pop-quizes when attendance drops. Super clear lectures with great examples and plenty of fun stories. Beware when she asks people to volunteer because she puts you on the spot. She tries to learn every student's name, which is cool because her classes are huge.
Great professor. Super funny and makes lectures interesting. No surprises on the tests, they come directly from lecture and you don't really need the book. She posts all powerpoints on Bb and there are weekly quizzes. Not a difficult class if you pay attention. Loved her.
Straight forward professor, lectures are engaging, funny, and she makes the material very easy to understand and relate to. Would definitely take again.
Great professor, shows the utmost respect for her students, and prepares you for every test and quiz. She grades fairly, and has you leave class with a much better understanding of not only the material, but how it corresponds to the real world. Didn't plan on this being my favorite course of the semester.
I took Learning & Cognition with Dr. Joy-Gaba this semester and really enjoyed it. She always planned out her lectures with great examples applicable to the real world. Go to class since she randomly gives out in-class assignments that are part of your overall grade. There are also two papers assigned that are also part of your grade.
Dr. Joy-Gaba did a wonderful job presenting material. She was always willing to help me during office hours and even met with me several times outside them when I wasn't able to make them.
Gives lots of example which are helpful
I had to withdraw because this class got to be too much for me to keep up with, but that does not mean Joy-Gaba is a bad professor. She's actually extremely wonderful!! She was always there to help me out and was very easy to talk to. I would take her again if I could!!!
Great professor!
Take this class seriously.
Tests are so long that it's hard to finish, with studying. Mult. Choice, matching, and essays (long ones) make up a test/exam
Dr. Joy-Gaba really cares about her students. It's a dry subject but she tries to make it fun. Tests are straightforward - she will tell you what she will test on and even how much some of the questions will be worth. Study guides, practice quizzes, and practice homeworks. You just gotta put in the time.
Although I think that Dr. Joy-Gaba is a nice professor and tried to work with me whenever she could. Her teaching style left much to be desired. She was constantly going on rants that were partially on topic but didn't have substance. If you take her be prepared to study a lot and get aid from others.
Terrible professor Made me feel dumb when I asked questions Had to work harder in this class than others Late to office hours and meetings Professor seemed like she didn't care about students
The class was pretty straight forward, but she was a really harsh grader. I thought I was prepared during the exams and for the papers but I would always be dinged on things that I felt I shouldn't have.
Professor gave many examples related to life and made the material fun. Weekly quizzes, 2 papers, and four exams.
Dr. Joy-Gaba made this my favorite class of the semester. I love the way she adds humor and relatable stories and examples to the lessons. My all-time reason for enjoying this class was definitely the demos, tricking and entertaining the class each day. I will miss this cookie-cake-and-cat-loving psych professor so much!
Dr. Joy-Gaba does a good job of keeping class entertaining and making great examples. She really cares about her students and wants people to do well. Would recommend her to anyone! She is my favorite professor in the psychology department.
Hard tests. Hard Grader. Doesn't seem to care specifically if you fail or pass. Gives off a persona like she thinks she's better than everyone. Not my favorite, wouldn't recommend.
One of the best classes I have ever taken. She is one the funniest and most knowledgeable professors I have ever had and she made the classes so enjoyable.
I love Dr. JG. She's honestly my favorite professor at VCU. She makes it easier to learn tough material. She gives good examples too. Go to class because she does random attendance checks and asks about demos and videos on the exams. She prepares you for the exams.
Took a course of hers about a year ago, till this date probably my favorite professor. She frequently uses personal stories as well as her cats as devices to make the material more humorous and easier to understand.
She's certainly very educated and invested in her field, but she definitely knows that and she wants you to know it too (first day of class, she explicitly stated that we call her *Dr.* Joy-Gaba...). She might be proud but she's a good teacher. Study hard for exams and keep up with homework and you'll be ok.
She is extremely passionate about her field and is very intelligent. She kind of has and "I'm better than you" attitude which makes her extremely intimidating. She will NOT allow any computers or cell phones in class so be aware of that. Tests are challenging because there is so much information.
She gives plenty of examples to help you understand. Just like other classes, you need to attend the class regularly to understand the material because there is a lot.
She is extremely condescending. Her technology policies and seating rules make you feel like you're in elementary school. The material is interesting but the tests are tricky for no reason. I'd take the class again, but definitely with someone else.
Dr. JG is awesome but definitely a tough class. She gives great examples and pulls her test questions straight from lecture slides and in class talks so have to attend class!! 2 short papers, 3 exams, and 1 cumulative final, 5 in class assignments as well as easy small weekly quizzes. You'll love her but don't expect not to work for your grade!
Joy-Gaba is an amazing and intelligent professor. Her course was a blast from start to finish. She uses very good examples to help you remember key concepts. If you have a question, she does everything she can to help you understand the material. She genuinely cares about all of her students. One of the best professors I have ever taken at VCU.
Class was two years ago. As long as you study and take the practice questions you should be fine. There are tricky questions, but everything in class and posted is meant to account for those. While she did use personal stories to help the class content, she did go off on tangents about some pretty serious topics not appropriate for the class.
Joy Gaba is awesome! Her teaching style is my favorite and she genuinely cares about her students and their needs when it comes to learning the material. I would take any class that she taught if I could!
Fav professor! She demands respect (as she should) but she's so relatable and makes lecture fun! Get an A: - print lec slides to take notes on *write down examples/demos (going to class is essential - make notes into flashcards! - review tb chapter before taking quizzes - papers: read syllabus and rubric(!!) before writing
At first I was really intimidated by Dr. Joy-Gaba and didn't like her, but throughout the semester I've grown to like her. Her class is a lot more manageable than I thought it would be, and a lot of stuff that you learn about is actually really fun and applicable to your life. She tells funny stories to help with concepts, study and you'll be fine!
LOVE LOVE LOVE her. I wish I could take her for every single class. Tests are average I got a B on most. Quizzes about once a week that are tricky but 3 are dropped. 2 papers that aren't hard. Super relate-able and cute. Curses and tells personal stories in class. you can tell she wants best for all students. LOVE HER
Prof. Joy-Gabba is the best! She has a wonderful "dry" sense of humor, which I love. She explains everything clearly and provides many examples to ensure we understand the material. For an upper level course, I thought this was a breeze with her. There are only a few tests, but she gives online quizzes throughout to help! Def. recommend!
Dr. Joy-Gaba is a professor who gives incredibly engaging lectures that help me remember material better than any professor before her. She does demand respect, and her no technology policy forces you to pay attention, which is good for your grade. Tests aren't easy but if you come to class, they aren't THAAAT hard.
Dr J-G is so funny and cute and her lectures were straight-forward. She's pretty clear on what she expects from her students. She did a lot of demonstrations in class which were super helpful. Her tests are challenging, but taking good notes will help you with that. I'll admit before before signing up the reviews scared me but I'm so glad i did!
Dr. Joy is a great professor. I never used the book and just went to class and got an A. Her lectures are interesting and she uses a ton of examples. She has a few rules like no technology but honestly just helped me focus. She's very nice and caring and I wish I could take more classes taught by her.
I really liked Dr. J-G, she was funny and did lots of demonstrations to help with learning concepts. This class isn't exactly a breeze, you do have to come to class and take good notes in order to do well. The class wasn't impossible though, there were multiple online quizzes, a few in-class activities, and two papers that can help your grade.
She is amazing! She really tries to make sure students understand by putting funny and relatable videos in the powerpoint for lectures. Attendance isn't mandatory but every now and then she do an in class assignment which is part of your grade. Overall, really fun class.
She's super cool, and her lectures are really entertaining. The material is kind of dry... but her tests are fair and she doesn't try and trick you at all. If you come to class, study and don't miss any assignments... then you can get an easy A. You can't skip class and expect to get an A with her... it won't happen... don't even try....
She's a super funny professor and gives great/informative lectures. Her class is 4 exams and 2 papers however her exams are a little tricky so don't think this is an easy class. The only way to really get an A is to show up and remember anything she says in class because she will ask SPECIFIC exam questions based on videos etc
I LOVE HER! she's so funny and relatable in class. makes you feel like you're friends from the start. also does an awesome job of making sure you succeed and understand the terms fully by giving great feedback, thoroughly explaining, and being available whenever you need her. she definitely cares about her students. 100% recommend taking her class
Interesting lectures because she provides numerous examples and stories to the material. Study the lecture slides and you will most likely pass.
Ms. Joy-Gaba is amazing. Although this is a challenging class, her lectures make the material easy to understand. She always gives multiple examples and doesn't mind explaining something over and over until you get it. She's funny too! 2 papers and 5 question online quizzes on the chapter every week. Go to class and skim over chapters, easy A.
Such an amazing professor! Her personal anecdotes really helped me learn the concepts. Even though I didn't want to initially take this course I'm glad I did. I would advise getting blackboard on your phone for the weekly quizzes. I would never remember to do them if blackboard didn't send me notifications.
Dr. Joy-Gaba is great at lecturing! They are funny, interesting and interactive. There are 2 papers with clear grading rubrics. Weekly online quizzes based on textbook reading, 3 tests and a cumulative final. The questions are very tricky and were frustrating at times. Overall the class is fairly difficult and you will have to work for an A.
Dr. Joy-Gaba is an amazing professor. So much of the material is similar, but she uses tons of real life examples that helps differentiate it all. She makes sure everyone understands the material and provides different ways of explaining concepts to ensure no one is left behind. Tests & work load are very reasonable. Read book for clarification.
I loved this class! Such a great Prof. who really makes sure you understand what she's teaching. I would definitely recommend going to class and reading the textbook. Tests are a little difficult, but as long as you go to class, study, and read the chapters you should be fine.
Lectures are well organized and straight forward, and she sprinkles in enough examples and videos to not make you fall asleep. Her quizzes are hard, so you probably will need to read your textbook, but she drops the lowest 3. Her exams aren't EASY, but if you take good notes and study, you'll probably be fine. Not an easy A but doable.
Great professor. Tells you exactly what you need to know for exams if you go to class. 2 simple papers that are easy 100 related to the material. Her energy and relife examples helped you to connect with the coursework. I would definitely take her again. 4 Exams, 2 papers, attendance required, extra credit is randomly given.
She was funny and gave good video examples. The tests drove me nuts and I felt lucky to get a B. Try not to assume you get the material until you go over it a few times and read the book. She typically asks questions on examples she gives in class, so its a good idea to come to class.
Dr. Joy-Gaba is beyond nice and her lectures were always interesting. The class session is long and she doesn't allow devices, so time can feel really slow. The exams were tough but she gives lots of partial credit. Attendance isn't mandatory but it's hard to pass if you skip (plus she takes surprise attendances sometimes).
Overall a great professor. Her lectures matched exactly what was on the exams. Attendance is not mandatory but, she does give random in class assignments. She has a no device policy unless you fill out a form for you to have your device to take notes. I only used the book twice to look up terms. If you attend class and study you will do great.
JG was by far the best professor I had in the PSYC department at VCU. She is dedicated to the growth of her students.
Took her summer 2020 online class and it was fairly enjoyable compared to other online classes I've had to take! I'm usually bored by recorded lectures, but she made her lectures entertaining and easy to understand. Despite the volume being very low on many of them, I was still able to learn as much information as I would in an in-person class.
Professor Joy-Gaba taught this class virtually and self-paced, but was very clear about what we needed to do each week with frequent reminders. It is easy to know what grade you will get as long as you put in the effort and apply yourself. The class was not overwhelming and she uses a lot of fun real-life examples to make the class understanable.
An extremely nice and clear professor who clearly cares about her work and her subject. Her tests are a little on the difficult side, so you really have to pay attention to all the lectures, but nothing impossible.
I love this class so far! I'm currently taking PSYC410 this summer (2021) and it has been a breeze. I only have one week left out of the mini course! The semester has been comprised of 3 (lockdown browser) exams, 2 papers, 15 ec points, 15 quizzes and one cumulative final. If you take active notes and try your best you should receive and A!
Took 4.5 week summer course. Awesome & caring prof! Lots of easy-to-follow lectures with relatable examples. Makes you work for your grade bc the exams are kinda hard & have questions about very specific examples. Other than that, the assignments are easy enough. Offers extra credit discussions for every chapter. Def. take her if you can!
I took the online Social Psychology course and I thought Professor Joy-Gaba did a wonderful job. Her lectures are easy to listen and relate to. She makes the material interesting and relevant. She doesn't give a heavy workload and her exams are very reasonable.
Professor Joy-Gaba is extremely nice and helpful. The material is just right to make the class go smoothly. I have learned a lot more in this class because I am not worried about the stress of not doing well. She posts a quiz every week after posting screencasts and tests about every month. The work load is good and she is nice and understanding.
seems incredibly nice but not a great prof imo. uses lecture videos from a few years ago, and TAs grade most (if not all) written work. exams feel like there are trick questions/answers instead of j actually testing your knowledge. 450/575 points come from exams. maybe its bc its online, but it j felt like not much effort was put into it/us
Easy quizzes that are free points, the exams are not too difficult, however the final exam is horrible. 4 essays, 30 mc, and pretty much every other format all in one exam, when no other exam is like this one. It was very difficult and there was no real warning or way to fully prepare for it. For that reason, I would not recommend this professor.
The average for the final was a 90/160, it was absolutely horrible. Ruins any chance of getting an A. Would not take a class by this professor again. The rest of the class was not bad, however, I had a mid A and I got a B from getting one of the highest grades on the final (110). Avoid.
Quizzes were super easy, tests were lockdown but doable. I do believe the short essay papers are graded a little harshly (maybe bc of the TAs). Final exam was okay, quite long and a bunch of essay based questions, none that were super hard tho. Overall, pretty easy class, minus the somewhat harsh grading
Joy-Gaba was an exceptionally tough grader (although, to be fair, TAs graded most assignments under her direction). The course material was reasonably challenging; in fact, I enjoyed learning about social psych, but the tests were unnecessarily difficult and the papers were graded very harshly. I would recommend any other professor for this course.
JG was organized and the material was clear. Exams were fair, and the quizzes were easy. She made an error on the final grading but quickly noticed and emailed the class explaining the issue and fixing it. Average scores were 83 for the first 3 exams, and an 80 for the final.
Dr. JG was a wonderful professor for social psych. Her lectures were engaging (although sometimes a bit monotone), and she did a great job consistently incorporating relatable content through real-world examples. I felt like I grasped the material largely because of the way she taught it. She was a lot of fun, and very knowledgeable.
This semester (SPR2022) she let the TAs teach and grade the entire lab section, which is the paper. They were very unorganized and did not always grade in a timely manner which was frustrating. Dr. JG was great though; her lectures were very well done. Exams are lecture heavy, not text book (i never opened it and did well on all exams).
Dr.JG is really nice and a good professor. We have weekly lectures with 5 questions quizzes which are pretty easy. You could definitely get a 5/5 even if you didn't read the material. The worst part of this class because it was async was just to remember to do everything. Her tests weren't impossible, but they also weren't a walk in the park.
She is not willing to work with you at all when it comes to having valid excuses for late assignments. Her tests are extremely difficult. She does not offer any extra credit and and her GTA's are awful. I would not recommend taking this professor, couldn't care less if you're failing, She sort of has this attitude like "well its not my problem".
Lectures are so confusing for what? She does not explain things well and she expects a lot on her exams. She purposefully tries to trick students on exams too. I have taken other stats/research classes, but this class has been extremely frustrating. Additionally the GTAs and her do not work together. She is nice when you talk to her though.
The material for this course was not easy, by any means, however JG was incredibly friendly, relatable, and always willing to discuss the subject and your grade. She posted relatively short lectures which made online learning much easier with busier schedules. Don't judge your professor by the course material! Thanks for a great semester JG.
This is one of the worst teachers at VCU. Avoid at all costs. Never willing to work with you. Cumulative final exam that HAS 4 ESSAYS on top of a TON of other questions.
She does not respond to emails. It was very frustrating having her as a teacher. Would not recommend.
Professor Joy-Gaba was an extremely tough grader and would give very brief, unclear feedback. The exams felt like she was trying to trick you and many of the questions were poorly written. The exams are worth a big chunk of your final grade and that's frustrating when the exams are written in a confusing manner. 10/10 would not recommend!
Honestly she is a nice professor. The lecture is by far harder than the lab. The homework and quizzes were deceivingly easy and test questions were far more confusing and tricky. This class is conceptual, be sure to understand the experiments, the different categories and be able to write out your own concepts or you will struggle.
Required 2 textbooks, but you don't really have to get the APA one for the lab. But the textbooks can be found online for free (look on reddit for the first one). Make sure to do extra credit stuff, I missed out on a few and they really could've gotten me to a B. Lab part of the class is easy but other half is tricky so make sure to study for tests
Very difficult would not take her again. In all the classes I took with her I did not get a good grade. Exams are tough. The TAs do most of her grading. The mini quizzes are easy though and are 5 questions which helped boost my grade
Exams are so hard! Do not take this professor. Makes the class very confusing
Wasn't an easy class, but assignment due dates were clear. Screencasts were short and tests were like her quizzes and homework. You will need to study for exams, there isn't enough time to complete the exam while looking at the notes.
She lives, breathes, and bleeds PSYC317. PSYC317 is her language, and she expects us to speak it. Please get this woman out of VCU. Ppl need this class to graduate. I heard more than 1 of my classmates have taken this class 4 times. Pls give them a break.
Tests aren't at all like the quizzes or HW she provides--worded tricky. Good lectures with great examples to help better understand, yet the tests are still hard.
If you are not an online lecture person, this isn't for you. You need to watch her lectures and pay attention to the examples she gives. Quizzes and assignments are easy--tests are NOT.
I would not recommend Joy-Gaba as a professor, take anyone else. She takes forever to grade assignments and makes consistent excuses as to why. PSYC 317 is a required major course and you must put in tons of extra work to get an okay grade. She makes the tests extremely difficult, but does do review sessions. She has an ego and is hard to talk to.
I took her 3 week summer course and I was STRESSED. It was a difficult class considering how compact it is, but she made it easy to follow and to stay on track. Overall she's a great professor and I would take her again.
Good professor with great examples for concepts. Tests are heavily based on her examples in class and questions are worded very tricky.
LOVED this class! It's very lecture heavy so never skip class or you will miss a lot of information. You have to study because her exams (3 unit, 1 cumulative final) are in-person, on scantron. She gives extra credit to the people who go to class. She has a very sarcastic humor which makes the lectures fun and interesting! Don't buy the textbook.
The exams are difficult, so make sure to study and know the material. There are lots of opportunities for grades through quizzes. Papers are easy and to the point. I would take a class with her as a professor again.
While there is A LOT of material to learn, Dr.JoyGaba breaks down the content well. That being said, you do have to make sure you go to every class and stay on top of the assignments because the exams are difficult and you will need to study. Attendance is mandatory for the lab portion of the class which isn't hard and will help your overall grade
Attend lectures and pay attention, since test questions often come from them. Start studying early; exams have ~50 questions, some from the textbook / not covered in class. Attend office hours if you need help. Do weekly quizzes for a good grade and to better understand. No retakes on exams unless absent. Extra credit is only given in-class.
Amazing professor, funny & sweet. Lectures: -long but informative -helpful -personal stories &activities keep things fun. She also posts what topics will be on the exam in her study guides. Attendance isn't mandatory but I recommend you go because it's easier to understand the material and she randomly gives extra credit for being in class
PSY317 with Dr. Joy-Gaba is challenging, but manageable with consistent effort. The content is dense, but the lectures and lab help break it down. Using Unstuckstudy and the textbook are key for exam prep.
Her course is terribly set up. Its absolutely awful. Her videos are unbelievably quiet and you cannot hear anything. AND SHE IS A TERRIBLE GRADER. She literally singled me out because she didnt like me. I had a 4.0 as a junior before her and she ruined it/ She was just taking points away because she didnt like me. I am going to file a report.
Dr. JG's class was incredibly informative, with content made easy to digest. Her grading criteria were fair, and the amount of extra credit was borderline saint-like. Tests included gimme points for those who paid attention, properly assessing knowledge and rewarding effort. She's personable, easy to talk to, and accessible during office hours.
Professor makes Exams due on Saturday opens up at 12am on Fridays. Even right before Spring Break too bad if you need to take it before she wont care no exceptions. Class is fine just quizzes and exams not very interactive class. The quizzes are a little difficult but not terrible. No extra credit. A lot of people get B's and she doesnt care at all
She's genuinely such a good professor. Don't trust the bad reviews. As a frequent procrastinator, even I'm passing her class. As long as you go to class, you'll pass. Even if you skip, look at the powerpoints and you're guaranteed to pass.
she has no sympathy and flexibility...l don't take her class
JG is great. Took 3 week summer course and couldn't have asked for a better professor. Clear instruction, great lecturer. I learned a lot in a very short period of time. Book is helpful as things are on quizzes/exams that aren't in lecture. So many oppurtunities for extra credit, probably part of the reason I ended with an A. Would take again.
sooo sweet and accommodating.
