cute teacher and fun to learn from!
Good teacher but hard test
her tests do not test on what she teaches
No Comments
good teacher, nice person, cute smile
She teaches the material well, but the tests are much harder than expected.
Good teacher with heart and intellect, shows you joy of science
A nice teacher I would say...but tests are way too hard! .
great teacher! helpful, and teach clearly. tests are resonable, but kinda hard

super helpful, and fair, and considerate.
she's okay.
she's the best teacher ever!!! really nice. she's not that much of a hippie and she laughs at everything ..very entertaining.
she is the best biology teacher ever she is really funny and explains the material well. great teacher!
Great instructor - really wants the students to learn the material. Exams challenge you to really know the stuff.
As someone who hates biology, she made me truly interested in it. She's interesting, friendly and and it isn't hard to see that she cares about the students' success. Kudos to you!
Great teacher. Made biology fun!
Summer class was pretty easy (but really stressful), her midterms were easy, final a little harder. Her exam questions are exactly like her problems in class. Pay attention when she says something is important, cuz it'll be on the exam.
took 3 week summer course with klenz. a very dedicated prof, answers everyone's questions in GREAT detail on webct (gives you paragraph answers). challenging course, but excellent teaching.
She likes to hear herself talk a lot..-.- I find her somewhat ok though..
Dr. Klenz is a good prof but her exams are too hard.
She's a great prof. I wish all my courses had such easy tests!
She is an awsome prof. Mid-terms are really easy but final is a little hard. She made bio. enjoyable! I recommend her to anyone!!!!
the biggest complaint - UNORGANIZED! Class material (lecture & readings) jumps around and handouts aren't available until the last minute.
Very good notes, with pictures and everything. But it will still be better if we have more concise notes.
Even thought the class was at 8am, I didn't fall asleep often. She made the material interesting.
Very smart teacher. Answers questions really well. Her midterms are 100% written which kinda sucks but they aren't hard by any stretch of the imagination if you go to class and take notes.
her exams r very hard, all written and expects very clear explanations. she teaches not bad, but marking is too hard~~overall class avg was low~
Very good prof. She is clear and her notes are perfect. Second midterm was a bit too hard, first midterm and final were ok. In this course you will get a LOT of information, so unless you have good memory, this course will be a rough experience.
intro to genetics lab tech... great prof.. very helpful, very cear, very intellegent. Treats you with respect if you show interest and put in an effort. Never had any problems with her. marking was fair. Marking not to hard. Pleasure to know her.
shoot me ,, shoot me now this class is boring and you might as well not go to class the notes are crap just read the text
Pretty easy class if you just study the notes she gives. She has a clear understanding of the material and teaches the topics well. Marking is relatively fair. Respectable prof, although she seems self-obsessed with the dream of becoming a famous geneticist and brags a lot about her "spinning hook-kicks". But overall, she is still a very good prof
shes good, teaches well but u gotta study hard if u wanna do good. class avg goin into the final 64
It's annoying when there are 3 profs teaching one class, never know who to ask though they said we can ask any. (Sometimes too many targets means too hard to target!) Anyhow, the MTs seem easy when you are writing them, but she marks way too hard, she even gives out 1/4 points. God. Never seen such stingy Profs. However she prepare notes. Pro & Con
its unfortunate she is lefthanded so that while you're copying what shes written, shes already gone on to the next topic. seems very knowledgable though, but all the talk makes for a somewhat boring class.
Lectures are rather boring. She treats us like we're in kindergarten. Her idea of "fun" is a silly skit where we pretend to be parts of a plant. Hard exams.
Really nice and nice to look at too ;-)
This class is a lot of work but the material is not hard. If you are planning on working in a lab after your degree, this is a good class to take as you get a lot of practical experience. It's also great because it's a small class so you get to know everyone and work out the problems together.
really great prof! shows lots of interest and answers questions patiently. seems to have very in depth & thorough knowledge of the subject as well. exams are GREAT because they're pretty easy, and she gives us bonus questions which enable us to get more than a 100%.
one of the few profs at UBC who actually cares about her students.. exams may be a little hard but doeable, overall great class!
EXCELLENT PROF
very good prof, study her notes and you'll do fine...
Bio 121 is WAY easier then Bio 112. Dr. Klenz is a great teacher. Very Energetic! Very Helpful! took this course in the summer! it was a breeze no joke. my avg. is like 65% i got 80% in this class. Test's are very fair/ pretty strait forward and easy. didn't read the book much. Her NOTES are key.YOU GET A CHEAT SHEET. Best first year teachers !!!
She's nice and all and the class is easy, but I felt that she didn't really know what she was talking about. There wasn't much too the curriculum, and it seemed like it was being taught by someone who had just completed the class last term.
Unnecessarily RUDE to students. Seems to think students are a nuisance rather that what she is there for - teaching. SO RUDE.
klenz is at UBC for research, she has no interest in teaching. complains about teaching a lot. very unapproachable, one-on-one.
If you read through the set of notes she spends hours on prior to each lecture maybe twice, you will do very well. I think I'm repeating what someone else has said, but if you don't do well in her class, you are probably one of those arts students.
EXCELLENT PROF!!! She is amazinf and extremely helpful. Make sure to read the notes. She is very dedicated and makes the class real fun!! If you are new to University, she should definitely be you choice!!! Great job Dr. Klenz, yours was the best class I have taken at UBC!!!
She is not a nice person. She is snappy and acts out her plain emotions. She has no social skills. She thinks that the world revolved around her.
her exams are super hard and and her materials r totally useless......choosing her is equal to prepare to fail the course
Professor Klenz is a dedicated teacher who cares about her students. She makes an effort to learn students' names and referred to me by name in class. Her lectures emphasize biology concepts but also puts them in a social and ethical setting as well. I think I became a more well-rounded person after this course. Take biology with her!
Do not take this class if you don't plan on working hard. This is perhaps the most demanding course in the biology program, but I was happy to dedicate all of my time to the lab since it became my favourite class. Jennifer is super easy to talk to (not just about academics) and is always there to help.
Very obviously passionate about subject and does alot of work to help students - online course packets, discussion boards etc. That being said this course is alot of work! She has alot of assignments, many of which are group ones - which I found to be annoying. She got a little crazy near the end putting people on the spot in a mean way.
I took this in summer. She doesn't like her own questions. She doesn't give answers that are definite. And yet she expects you to study only her materials
Her lectures have no flow at all. She also doesn't answer questions clearly. She told us to study a certain topic (pedigree) for the midterm, but then she didn't test that topic on the midterm. I got totally screwed!
Very nice prof, really cares about your learning
A mixed opinions of 4 comments below I would say. Sometimes her lectures do not flow very much, but what she does well is give a lot of examples. If you work hard, answer all the questions in the notes, I'm sure you'll own the class. She is really active on the discussion board and if you seek help, you'll get it. Oh and peer tutor was cute too =P
sometimes does not give definite answers for questions, but very helpful if you seek it.
Good prof, very passionate about what she teaches and really cares about her students. Too many group projects and sometimes a bit unclear.
She is willing to answer students' questions, and she is also approachable. Gives out practice exam before actual exam, which is good because the actual exam is very similar to the practice exam but maybe a bit harder. Too many small assignments though! But overall, she is a good prof. She encourages critical thinking, all written exams no MC!
Terrible prof and miserable course; don't ever read your text cuz exams are not based on that; she can't even articulate what she teaches and since text is useless, u don't know how to study for exams; most importantly, she assures me that my future career would have nothing to do with bio
I thought this was going to an easy A. Why? Because the midterms were so easy! But the problem is the final...This is the worst kind of course because there is really no way to study for it. Big mistake not taking Bio 12 in high school. I will regret it forever...
Has no idea what it going on, instead of lectures does clicker questions the whole class and expects you to just understand what is going on without telling you what to read to be prepared for the class. terrible prof
OMG, this course is just terrible. Just as the one down there said, reading is your problem, doing all useless clicker questions. She is no good, avoid, I had to take it because I have to, but, if you can avoid, avoid !
This professor is terrible. During the class, she doesn't talk about her notes, but doing useless clicker questions. The midterm is super hard. Many questions with a little time allowed. And she is very skeptical, I tried to look up at the roof just to take a breath, she thought I was looking at other people's paper. I was pissed. Avoide her!
She was amazing! I thought all her lectures were extremely interesting. Clicker questions keep you engaged. It was definitely my favorite class to go to. I'm a science student and biology is not my strong area but I still did well. Lots of projects but still a great class!
not that she's not good, but her classes take up A LOT of time, with miscellaneous stuff that pull your marks down if you don't do them "clicker/forum contribution/survey" and you haf NO IDEA what to focus on for exams but just study for everything covered, which is horrible because even studying does not guarantee good marks.
Decent prof, class was interesting. Not too many clicker questions compared to other courses I've taken. Group assignments were quite annoying. Exams have a lot of reading, but questions are straight-forward applications. Just study the textbook readings+lecture notes posted online and try not to skip class (I did miss a week but still got an A)
Second year Genetics made sense because of her. I'm so glad she taught the class, cause if she didn't, I would certainly have failed the course. (The course had 2 profs, her and an incredibly horrible other prof). Very helpful and clear, and her questions are very fair. Willing to help too :)
Absolute nightmare. Unless you REALLY want to study biology, avoid her. Really boring and unprepared for class. Lots of group work and heavy emphasis on frivolous participation points. Very patronizing and rude. Don't do it!!!
NIce teacher, emphasizes on real-world applications and understanding biology. A bit hard to understand at times, but lecture notes were helpful. Midterms and FInals were fair.
A good prof to have for genetics. I found her lectures to be a bit more dry compared to the other prof who taught the class (Dr. Haughn), but she got across the material well enough. Lots of examples are done in class so make sure you attend, lots of clickers as well.
I enjoy her way of teaching. She explains things super clear and will guide you how to solve problems step by step. She is approachable but doesn't have fixed office hours. She cares about her students and covers things you need to know for the exam.
Terrible teaching as a prof. Her concepts aren't hard, but she treats students like grade school kids. Very disorganized with lecture material and reading quizzes. Runs into tech difficulties almost every class. Spammed us w/ emails, then commented sarcastically when we reflected that we didn't appreciate being spammed. Very unprofessional.
J. Klenz is bae. Best professor UBC has to offer. 1010 would take bio again.
Jennifer is a good prof. She makes it clear what you have to know for exams and presents material well. Lots of clickers to help her get a feel if the class is understanding or not. She can be a bit patronizing at times but very rarely. Gives make up marks after the midterm through in class group activities. Midterms were fair.
Lots of i-clickers, lots of discussion. Sometimes the discussion slows down the lecture and makes it irrelevant. Lectures are helpful most of the time, especially if you do prereading, concepts are defined in moderately high detail. The prof is available and open for help, but she could be a bit lofty sometimes, so think before you speak.
Super condescending, treats the class and individuals as they are grade schoolers. Rude. Comes to class pretty disorganized. Likes iClickers, so go to class. 3 main group projects (which aren't beneficial to learning the concepts). If you need this because you haven't taken biology in awhile, just watch documentaries and read a book instead.
Long and boring lectures: sometimes off topic. Is very helpful and actually helped me to deal with my phobia on jelly fish. NO MULTIPLE CHOICE EVER on midterms, and the questions are subjective. I don't know who did the markings but the subjective nature of the midterms makes them a little unfair.
Terrible prof. Her lectures are sleep-inducing and she's condescending to her students. If you leave in the middle of class for any reason, she will shame you in front of everyone based on the assumption that you only left because you forgot to bring a clicker. I didn't find the midterms to be too hard, but the marking scheme was kinda unfair...
A blow-off class. Horrible class notes. Boring lectures. Pointless in-class discussions. Overuse of iclickers, which were used for participation; students only went to lectures for the participation marks. Felt like a high school social studies course. 25% of grade was participation and group assignments. Exams solely based on class notes.
Awful professor. My high school teachers were better than her. I can't believe she is allowed to teach. The only thing I improved in this course were my mobile gaming high scores. Not hard to pass but horribly dreadful to have to attend. Also, don't buy the textbook. Completely useless.
If you skip classes but you read the textbook and lecture notes, you'll at least get a B.
She wasn't bad as a lecturer, but I felt at times she spent too long re-enforcing the more basic concepts. She also had a tendency to try to rationalize incorrect answers given by students in class, maybe so they didn't feel bad, which probably didn't help them in the end. Loved the subject matter, though, so I might be biased.
She was an amazing lecturer, and really kept the class entertained with her genetics knowledge and applications. However, while her in class examples were great and inspirational, they lacked the complexity of the questions that came on the midterms and final. The practice problems for this course are nowhere near as difficult as the exams.
Not a very good prof overall. However it's really easy to get an A...
She really cares about students, she asks if things need to be repeated or if someone is stuck she encourages questions, she spends a long time on material that is important and gives good tips on how to do well, shes always free to go over harder questions in her office hour.
She was one of three profs, so she didnt really call the shots. But was the best out of three. She is very caring and approachable. She went off telling stories during office hours, which created a friendly environment.
Dr. Klenz was one of three profs that taught 234 and she was an effective prof in getting us to know the required material but she is not as exciting as Craig. Her questions on the midterms and final were not as difficult as the ones that the other two profs added. Would only take again if there was no other option.
Took this class in the summer, wasn't too bad. Taught you everything you need to know, just a matter of practising on your own. I also thought it was really great that she printed off worksheets for the class all the time. Lots of lecturing. Zoned out a few times.
I just went to one of her office hours (in the first 2 weeks of class) and noticed she is unbelievably helpful and caring towards her students. Also, extremely clear and understandable in her explanations, she didn't over-explain or use incredibly difficult language. two thumbs up!
Decent proff. She can seem a bit distant and hard towards students, but if you go to her office hours she's really helpful. Lectures aren't the best (somewhat interactive, but just kinda dry), but still do a decent job teaching the material. Time limit for MTs is too short, but if you do well on the final they'll drop them.
This course is awful and jennifer doesn't help. She's the wicked witch of wesbrook. Her slides aren't as good as craigs or kotas, and her MT1 was actually impossible. Unfortunately, i think she teaches the course in all semesters it's offered, so good luck with her. Her in class examples are 10x easier than exam questions, so focus on tut questions
Hands down the most self absorbed professor Ive ever had cant go a day without talking about herself
One of the absolute worst profs in UBC. She has no idea what she is talking about, her notes are confusing, and she is not reasonable at all. Avoid this prof at all cost. I had taken 3 courses with her and they were all awful. Especially avoid her BIOL 234 class. I think I had a better knowledge about the subject than her.
Her BIOL 234 was one of the worst classes I took in UBC. I wouldn't recommend this prod to anyone.
Shes a nice lady. Really does seem to care. However her teaching is very insufficient leading to us getting very far behind each class. Furthermore she makes excuses about everything and tries to shame the class by bringing up her personal life. In a class of 70 with 4 TAs it shouldnt take more than 2 weeks to mark a final, but here we are...
Explains concepts well and uses clicker questions to test understanding (most are for participation not right/wrong). Sometimes uses worksheets in class which helps because tests are calculation heavy. Should be okay as long as you can solve tutorial worksheets
Jennifer was a great prof. She was super understanding and caring for her students! She always seemed so excited and passionate about teaching biology which made me love the class. I would definitely want her as a prof again.
Jennifer Klenz is an interesting professor. She is a super caring and nice person; however, her teaching is not good at all. You spend 3 hours a week in BIOL 140 and at the end, with more than 40 hours of class time, you understand nothing that has happened. I still dont know what cladocopium and durisdinium are. Good grades, though.
She's the worst. There is so much f*king work to do for this class, don't take it if you can cause its absolutely ridiculous. There is still a ton of my work that is unmarked and its the end of the term cause she gives sooooo many assignments for no reason. The midterm is also all written and she marked everyone so hard. Don't take her class.
Don't get me wrong, Jennifer is a lovely person. But I am really not a fan of the way she teaches. There's always way too many readings and assignments each week. Spent the entire term learning about corals and I've heard the same terms over and over and I feel like I still can't grasp whatever I learned. This course is really group work heavy too.
Where do I even start. The course itself is awful, but the prof is also incredibly rude and condescending to students. She acts like doing her job is a favor to her students. The marking criteria is unclear, the assignment instructions make no sense half the time, and she marks as if you should be able to read her mind. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Nothing stands in your way of success more than Jennifer Klenz. She runs the entire course like a circus and half the time she rambles on about useless garbage for the entire 3 hours. She creates half-assed group projects and uses vague rubrics that she (and her clown TAs) grade to their pleasure. The university should reconsider her employment.
This class is Investigations in Life Science: Guided experimental investigations of biological questions, yet we learned very little about anything to do with lab methods/prerequisite material for higher level courses. Instead, we spent the whole term learning about corals. The final project was on corals. This class and prof was a joke.
Horrible course. Instructor has no idea what she is doing. Forces us to be in groups where members do not work and Jennifer does not have even a basic understanding of how to use canvas. She leaves grading until the last minute and is incredibly unhelpful.
I tagged this as inspirational because Jennifer is inspirationally horrible at teaching. I also tagged the course as hilarious. Hilariously atrocious.
As others have already said, this prof cant teach and is unapproachable. Her mannerisms towards students is unacceptable and I cant understand why she is an instructor.
Jennifer Ellen Klenz is absolutely the worst professor. She is super passive aggressive. She will respond to emails, with a pool of sarcasm, and does nothing, making it seem that we are blessed to have her. She will leave grading until the last day (and even after grades have been released) so you can't dispute. I wish her not on my worst enemy.
Jennifer klenz is unbelievably talented at turning what should be a 50 minute lecture into a 3 hour mind numbing conversation between her and the TAs. The purpose of this course is laughable because I truly did not learn one useful scientific concept. The number of irrelevant group projects is astounding and the teaching team lacks teaching skills.
Her marking on projects is very arbitrary, the last few days everything got regraded so everyone got 20 emails and the marks are all <50% on canvas so she can hide all the details of marking. There is so much homework, 5-7 hours/week for 2 credits! So much time wasted in class, repeating things Save yourself from the mountain of work and despair
Funny and nice in class but very aggressive on piazza and email. Did not learn anything useful, our grades were not made clear to us until they were published and a lot of our marks were based on group projects that were impossible to do well on because of her unclear grading criteria. Lowest section ave out of this course. Did not enjoy :(
Although this class is very easy to do well in (85 average this year), it was by far the least enjoyable class that I took this semester. In class, Jennifer seems sweet and you'd think she cares about the students, however many find her way of speaking to students, face to face, and over email to be very condescending. The class goes on forever.
Unreasonable expectations (expected us to explain what a coral is), bad teacher, gives inconsistent instructions... please please try to avoid her
She teaches like 5 or 6 of the same class and gives inconsistent information/instructions to each section. She will say something in one section and forget to tell another, but you get marks taken off for not knowing. She has done this to our group MANY TIMES. Horrible and unfair.
I always try give kind ratings because all teachers deserve respect as real people. I feel she genuinely cares about her students, but because the class isn't material based, but about completing assignments and projects, it is hard to get a good grade. Groupwork heavy-> figure out how to work with ur group. READ RUBRICS.
She is extremely condescending and not someone I feel comfortable learning from. I watched her constantly put down students, as well as TAs. She plays favorites as well as least favorites. If you arent her favorite, she will manually lower your grade. If you dont want to cry due to the comments made by this educator, DONT TAKE THIS CLASS!
One of the most condescending and most passive-aggressive people I have ever had to interact with.
Jennifer treats this class like it's the only class you have. So much group work outside of class and has vague instructions. Lectures are basically useless, she focuses on corals and not on skills you need to take away from the course. She criticizes extremely, anything you say she will answer in a condescending tone. Don't take her class.
Jennifer Klenz is extremely vague in her requirements for her assignments and brushes off reasonable demands for rubrics by complaining about her numerous sections. Despite getting a good mark, this class is mind-numbing and tedious. She seems kind until you have multiple interactions, where you realize she's extremely passive aggressive.
She's awful. Very passive aggressive, never marks stuff on time so right before the end of the semester your grade drops so much when you thought you were doing good. Vague rubric and a tough grader. Also does not understand people have anxiety and forces them to speak up. Learned nothing from her. Worst class I've taken.
Professor Klenz comes off as very caring in the beginning but after multiple interactions she is extremely passive-aggressive and if were being honest, I learnt absolutely nothing from her lectures. She has very vague rubrics and then gets upset when everyone does terribly. If you can, I would recommend you register for a different prof.
BIOL 140 with Jennifer Klenz has been a colossal waste of time. Not only did we not learn anything to do with lab techniques, but the prof herself is incredibly unprofessional and rude in her interactions with students. In feedback for group assignments her comments are unacceptable.
I was soooooo bored. I hated the course. I literally was dying. She just went on and on about corals and I wanted to die. SUPER BORING. Could not engage with "corals dying everywhere" at all. The learning about general scientific thinking was ok. The marking was extremely objective. If you don't say the keyword they want you are screwed.
Professor Klenz provides a rubric for every assignment but then when it comes to marking, marks will be taken off for things not listed on the rubric so it is very difficult to know what to actually include in assignments. Actually the worst class. If you get Jennifer as a prof, drop the course because it's impossible to please them to get marks.
I learned nothing from this course. They take forever to mark anything, and when they do finally mark, they don't follow the rubric, and you end up with feedback that doesn't make sense. Klenz would also come off as kind during the lectures but be super petty and rude in a one on one interaction.
I get why a lot of people say Dr. Klenz is passive-aggressive but I actually find her to be honest and refreshing lol. This course has a lot of assignments for only two credits and I feel like you do need to be extra active in her classes to have a better chance to get good grades.
Klenz is so rude. She comes off nice in lecture but then if you ask her anything during office hours she is rude. Her feedback is rude. She does not make learning feel comfortable, because her feedback makes you feel like s***. I would not take her simply because she is a mean person, but she also cannot teach and her marking makes no sense.
I found Dr. Klenz to be unapproachable outside of the class. She would not respond to any emails and she would sometimes laugh at students for asking questions. Also she did not provide clear guidelines for the course and her marking was very abstract with no feedback. I would not recommend taking a class with Dr. Klenz
She was the worst and by far the most unorganized professor I ever had! She Made a lot of mistakes! We had to repeat multiple experiments multiple times either because she screwed them up. In Assignments, she confused us by asking for thing that did not exist and after wasting our time for hours to days she just said sorry, I made a mistake!!
Ranted at us about things that were unrelated or whatever was bothering her. Very disorganized and messy, unclear grading criteria, wouldn't respond to emails or requests to meet and the kicker is she went thru our grades and manually deducted points from our assignments and final before submitting our grades so we were completely blindsided.
you can tell she's really trying but she is not good at explaining things. she sometimes seems unsure of the material herself, and often can't fully answer student's questions. her questions are worded very weirdly and hard to interpret, but in my experience aren't graded too strictly at least. her kid is very cute tho and she'll show you pictures
Dr Klenz really seems to care about students & was engaging + helpful all term. She just has a good positive energy and is really understanding, when there were tough deadlines to meet she allowed extensions/dropped part of the assessments. If you are keeping up with lab material and try your best she acknowledges that. Made genetics really fun!
Been a couple years since I took this class, and having had a couple years with other professors, I can strongly say that Jennifer Klenz is the worst one I have had. Absolutely destroyed the final grade for my entire group, and emailing her asking for an explanation was absolutely futile. Genuinely don't want to be rude, this woman should not teach
Professor Klenz's class is challenging, with many assignments and high expectations. Attending lectures is a must, as she provides helpful insights not found in the textbook. For study prep, Unstuckstudy and other resources like ChatGPT can be valuable supplements. Overall, the course is difficult but rewarding for diligent students.
Disorganized & makes mistakes when explaining concepts. Passive aggressive when students email/ask genuine questions or express concern about something in her office hours. It is very difficult to understand her expectations for exams and assignments as they change every lecture. On the plus, lectures are recorded and there are no iClicker points.
I find it difficult to figure out how much she expects of us during tests. Even the learning outcomes for each lecture doesn't clearly say how much detail in knowledge is required. Lectures often contain content that won't be tested. Goes too deep into photosynthesis. I get lost often. Occasionally makes mistakes. Has one group field trip.
Dr. Klenz was a very caring professor. She went out of her way to help the class understand concepts which seemed difficult or confusing, by happily answering all questions. I like that she posted lecture recordings so we could go back and re-watch past lectures, this was helpful when studying for exams. Her classes were engaging though fast paced.
8 am has never seemed so early, only upside was the amazing moves we would see during movement breaks. She seems to try and care, but often I felt I had to learn 99% of the material outside of class.
Lectures were confusing as she cannot explain things very well. She is disorganized. To succeed you just really have to do a lot of self teaching. But during the UMoveCrew movement breaks she really gets into the dance moves which is entertaining.
Her lectures can sometimes be confusing (time spent on the wrong things). Test questions and grading rubrics are unclear and she was disorganized with practice questions, answers to HW questions, etc. She seems to care and is easily accessible, but she sometimes comes off as annoyed or passive-aggressive.
defo not as bad as the other reviews make her seem. she seems friendly enough in class, but i do get kinda passive aggressive tones in her emails. occasionally gets confused in class. only complaint is you will have to spend a lot of time doing outside of class on this course - weekly journal+hw question+compair+pre reading.
Prof. Klenz seemed quite friendly both in class and in my few email correspondences with her. Lectures were a bit disorganized and not very helpful. However, the material is very easy, so attendance is not needed. The slides alone are enough. There are many tedious small assignments throughout the term, which is annoying. Overall, it was okay.
She is nice enough in the lectures. Her out of class assignments are manageable but deadlines are often wrong on the syllabus and she completely miss timed multiple assignments which made it hard to follow. Lectures are long and boring. Tests are not hard with a cheat sheet but grading is unpredictable so it is necessary to be thorough.
She's nice, but got more passive aggressive over the term. Can't blame her really, since everyone stopped showing up to lectures. Exams are easy enough, as the content is not very challenging. Course was disorganised - some deadlines and assignments ended up not happening. Lot of little assignments to do, which is annoying, but it is what it is.
She was a great prof, her lectures were interesting and engaging, even though I'm not a morning person her 8 am classes kept me awake. The best part was office hours though, she was so passionate about what she was teaching, she went above and beyond explaining things in a way you could understand and even repeating lecture topics to be more clear
Not a bio student here (in fact I detest bio), but this prof was very attentive, caring professor. Never in a rush. She always slowed down and revisited concepts the class clearly struggled with. I didn't care for the group project, but the tests were fair, cheat sheets were allowed, and the questions were about the same difficulty as the homework
Just a terrible professor, please go back to your SFU, your teach style fits SFU but not here, please!
Review(1/3): Jennifer was very disorganized. She used a lab manual she wrote for the course, which included grading rubrics for each assignment. However, she would also post rubrics on Canvas—often close to the assignment due dates and without alerting students—that contained revisions or additional requirements that differed from the lab manual.
Review(2/3): She micromanaged your bench dynamics intrusively. Everyone is expected to demonstrate contribution to equal extra lab time in front of her. Lab was open 9-5, M-F, and Jennifer was only there in T-F PM. Students who came in when she wasn't there were viewed with suspicion, and their groupmates questioned about their contributions.
Review 3/3: She seemed to take her lab tech Mindy's words at face value, forming negative impressions of some groups based on hearsay. Even when those groups later explained their situation reasonably, her initial opinion persisted. It often felt like she forgot the group's clarification and remained biased.
2 quizzes every week, too much homework, and extra lab time. Disrespectful to students, overwhelmed, don't take this course.
This person is outrageous. The group assignments were pretty normal, but she had a strange "contract" requiring each team member to list their strengths and weaknesses, with the weaknesses having to be sufficiently "weak."
She can't even understand a presentation if it's not simple enough. She knows nothing about anything other than biology, and the grading is completely subjective, meaning she's grading something she has no idea about. It's hard to imagine this being the kind of behavior an instructor should exhibit. Please stay away, brothers and sisters.
She disrespects students and is self-righteous and immersed in her own world.
She required students' research to be supported by data or sources, but she graded it based on her own imagination rather than trying to understand the students' true meaning.
