Tough class. She definitely has a sadistic sense of humor and is pretty sarcastic. The first few classes of the semester were shocking because of her rude & sometimes inappropriate comments made to students in front of the class. I have never made such low grades in English in my life and I usually write very well. I do not recommend her class.
HORRIBLE TEACHER! 3 out of 20 students passed and the rest fail! AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SEMESTER SHE EVEN SAID SHE DOESN'T CARE IF YOU FAIL, IT'S HER GOAL TO FAIL YOU! SHE WILL SLEEP LIKE A BABY KNOWING SHE FAILED 90% OF HER CLASS!
I went to her for help and still recieved a bad grade on essays. She gives handouts, but I did not feel she really taught anything. Wierd sense of humor but ok. I dropped that class and going with someone that cares more.......
She is very hard but fair. Think of it as an essay writing boot camp. If you stick in there you will learn a great deal about how to write and you will improve- promise. I liked her sarcastic sense of humor and she is really helpful if you go see her during office hours.
Just wanna make her future students aware that, you either put 50% of your study time in this then you are fine other wise doomed (Like me and 70% of my friends), rest 30% seemed to have transferred from Ivy league.

I LOVE HER! i read these comments before and was so nervous about taking her, but she is so funny. she makes sarcastic remarks, not rude. its just her dry/sarcastic humor. she keeps the class laughing with her comments. she is a hard grader and expect a quiz every class on the assigned reading. but, if you do what she says you will be fine

her class was painfully boring, she grades hard, and mocks my class, BUT, she is willing to help, gives alot of helpful feedback on all papers, and i must admit, she has made me a better writer. Just make sure you never miss class and turn in all assignments on time, because if not it will kill your grade. good luck
Picked on me a lot but I didn't take it to serious everyone in my class failed at least one paper. Do the work and don't cheat she will catch you do what she says and you will be fine. If you pass this class you are ready to move on to the next level. If you go for help she will help you & most likely pass you in the end if you do the required work
Jennifer is actually a great professor for her literature classes. She has a wicked sense of humor and assigns interesting material. In her classes, you are encouraged to think and to create. If you want to breeze through, this is not your professor. Move along, little undeclared majors.
Worst teacher ever at UNO. Her classes were boring and she was very tough on Freshman. A student in my class recieved help from the LRC and she accused her of cheating... WORST teacher at UNO.. AVOID TAKING HER
Please do not take of you're an engineering or science major- this class requires just as much studying as organic or physics- I tool her For Non English Majors class and I had to drop it because it interfered w/ my other studies and I still didn't have a good grade in her class...trust me

She takes a while to warm up to you. Tends to grade on whether or not she agrees with you. Very demanding with coursework and a bit unclear about what she wants. But does have a biting sense of humor and casualness.
Expectations appear to be that all students have taken her for ENGL 1158 or they won't do as well. Has a very sarcastic wit, difficult to tell if she's serious, doesn't appear to like teaching or students. Grades like she's teaching senior English majors instead of sophomore level non-English majors. I would avoid her.
This teacher is crazy hard. I took this freshman English class and she graded it like we were all Senior English majors. No one made higher than a C on any of our papers. She said she doesn't remember the last time she gave an A. This class completely ruined my 4.0 GPA. Do NOT take her.
She wasn't that hard, just really, really terrible. I remember face palming myself after hearing her speak grammatical errors. The rest of the class wasn't that smart either but she made it even worse. DO NOT take her. She ignited my deep dislike for UNO, which has grown exponentially since.
Definitely keeps class interesting. Don't skip and never be late. Keep up with the readings(daily quizzes). FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS for the MT/final and papers. Do this and you'll be fine. I haven't taken English courses in years and passed easily. If you get in a bind just talk to her, she's really easy to worth with. Very cool lady!

She is the worst English teacher ever. I read the comments about her and decided to take her class anyway because I feel I am a great writer and thought the challenge would only improve my skills. Boy was I wrong. You can be the best writer in the world and will not pass this lady's class. Good luck because she will need it if you take her class.
Many complain that she's a horrible professor, yet little do people know that she's only preparing you for the future. The further you go into your college years, the harder it'll get. TRUST ME. So why not take advantage of her challenging coursework? Remember, college is meant to be a challenge that requires plenty of effort.
She's a tough grader. Like, EXTREMELY tough. I've never before gotten anything lower than an A in English. She tears apart your papers, but does it with just cause. Learned a lot. Show respect, pay attention, and be in class on time and she's actually pretty cool. Especially if you like a challenge!
She's by far the hardest professor I've ever had. I loathed going to her class. The only reason I barely passed was because I went to the writing center several times for each paper and went to get advice from her office. I spent SO much time on them, too! I wish I would have taken the advice I read on here. DO NOT TAKE HER!

Easily the toughest class I have this semester. She's clear with stating her expectations, yet she's a HARD grader. I made straight A's in English during high school and I'm hardly passing with a C in her class. You must attend class or she'll fail you. If you struggle in English or expect to pass by doing little work, get a different professor.
She is HARD! If you go to her office and ask for help she's willing to help. As far as class, diff story. She's EXTREMELY intimidating! Treats students as if they're English majors-but even the Eng major in my class got lower grades than I did! She grades harddd. First day of class: 16 students, by the next week: down to 7ish. AVOID IF YOU CAN!!
This class is horiibbaalllkeeee and i spelled it wrong to emphasize how bad this class is, if you value your academic future please do not take this class. It will make you give up on life.
Jennifer gets her rocks off by giving people C's, D's, and F's all semester and then maybe curving the final grade, so you'll most likely pass. It's still a miserable, degrading experience that she seems to enjoy. She'll tear you down moreso than build you up, yet contends it's all for your own good! Curiously: she's a terrible writerreader.
Although she was a tough grader, her goal was to help students learn. If you put in as much effort as she does in grading, you will improve! For each essay, Id start off with an "F," but since she allowed 3 submissions per essay, I could learn from my mistakes and submit the essays again. My grades got better and I ended up learning how to write!
If you want to just breeze through class, then she is not your teacher. Ms. Kuchta pushes you to see more than a class to pass and atleast begin to understand what real writing is. I loved that she made jokes, was sarcastic and even a little sadistic. Helped out when life hit you, but drop the class if you don't want to write or read the textbook.
This class was the hardest English class I had ever taken. I was a Freshman and she expected my paper to be written like I had a master's in English. I am typically a straight A student, but I received a low B in this class. Which for this class was amazing. However, most of the other class mates dropped and a few failed.
This class is the hardest class ever. She grades your paper like her life depends on our rating. This is a struggle . Most of the class is failing .
Extremely tough grader -English is my strongest subject- I'm hardly getting out of here with a D. She is very sarcastic and most of the time, down-right rude to students. Attendance is mandatory, so if you like to skip, don't even think about taking this class. Another word of advice is leaving your cell phone in your bag or car, she's not a fan.
Got switched into this class even though I had Lewis. I'm switching out because on my first day in the class she said she doesn't even remember the last time she gave an A in 1158. She said most people get out of her class with a C, D or F. Not gonna put myself through that. She seems harsh. Wouldn't recommend.

I am currently enrolled in this class. My entire life I have been a very good student in english, until now..... She is THE hardest essay grader that I have ever had. She specifically said that she doesn't remember the last time she gave an A. I should have dropped then, and I wonder if i'll even pass this class.

She's tough when it comes to grading. You have to really speak with her about what she looks for in your work, otherwise you may not receive the best grade. You certainly have to learn quickly and apply what you learned in this class. She's more for people who already are more intermediate in writing and love to do work. She's also strangely funny.
This class gave me so much anxiety. Ms. Kuchta has impossible expectations for her students and she's often negative. I'm an english major and it was still extremely difficult for me. It really seems like she thinks all of her students are lazy and that she hates the milennial generation. She is just overall an extremely negative and bitter person.
If you don't want an F on your record , Don't take her! She's given me F's on every single paper & expected me to correct every single sentence. It's impossible when you're there to learn , but you're basically expected to know it already. Her class was a waste of time. I learned nothing . More than half of the class failed. She is funny.

I wish I'd listened to everyone here. I'd never dreaded any other class in my entire college career. I think 6 people passed in my class, thankfully, I was one. I went to the writing center many times, went to get help from her many times-you have to do this. She's a very diff grader but get past her intimidation &get help from her- she will help.
I wouldn't recommend this class to anyone ! She's extra for no reason. She hates technology and doesn't allow phones in her class. If you don't go to her office hours 9 times out of 10 you will fail. No extra credit. Attendance mandatory
Do not put yourself through this. My classmates (most of whom were enthusiastic and capable writers) lived in fear of failing. Her personality is bland at best, abrasive at worst. I usually make high As on English assignments, and I was making Cs. She grades out of 10 and gives a 7 for decent work. Your writing WILL improve, but at what cost?
She gives no leniency for your perspective on a story's content or characters, no matter how concise or simplified your reasoning may be. The classmates can concur with you, and she'll even grade you harshly on it by participation. Your paper bleeds no matter how well composed and relative to the story it is. Please avoid this sadist at all cost.
rant pt2 this lady literally gives a quiz every day based on readings she's assigned. she asks the most random questions from the reading and if you fail them you practically fail her class. her exam is harsh because she wants things WORD 4 WORD based on what notes she gave you. she grades essays harsh and she's willing to work with you on it.
She WILL make you a better writer. She makes you really think deep ab your essay and perfect all aspects. However, she grades wayyyy too strictly. Her class felt impossible. Im now making all As in 1158. Struggled to make a B in her class.

Professor Kuchta is a tough grader. I took her online course ,and she doesnt provide enough time to complete the mid-term and final exams. I spent my time going to the writing lab to strengthen my papers , and yet I couldnt accomplish to get an A on any of them. I have always been told Im a strong writer ,that was until I took this course.
I didn't think that anyone could make me dislike a NOLA Lit class, but she's suceeded. Don't agree with her? She treats her students like idiots. She is incredibly rude and should not be allowed the priveledge of teaching in a university setting. We pay good money for a UNO edeucation and we deserve something better. You've been warned.
Shes a tough grader, I would not recommend taking her if you arent confident about your writing. She grades papers very toughly totally disregarding the fact that this an entry level class
Don't let all these reviews scare you. Professor Kutcha is just a no-nonsense instructor. You show up, you make an effort, you participate and you're fine. Professor Kutcha doesn't take any sh*t and will call you out on your shenanigans. One important note: NOLA Lit is a SENIOR level class. Don't take it if you aren't comfortable with writing yet!
English has always been my favorite subject, and she ruined it for me. All of my friends have raved about their English professors at UNO, but because I transferred so late, only her classes were available (dead give away right there). I strongly advise you do not take this class, you will not pass, and this is coming from a straight-A student.
This class definitely makes you work hard. Make sure to put all your effort into classwork and be prepared for quizzes. They can help your grade tremendously. She is a tough grader but overall helps you become a better writer. I was relieved that I passed with a B in her class after hearing how hard it is to get a good grade.

The reviews are correct please don't take this professor. All she cares about is her dog and she is just overall terrible. Imagine having to read 2 stories and are tested on them every Wednesday and Saturday. I can't wait until December.
She is incredibly rude and unhelpful. When it comes to grading or revising a first draft of an essay, instead of constructive criticism, she just insults your writing and doesn't give any guidance. She is incredibly hard to get in contact with as well. When you do finally get a response for her, she offers no help or is very vague. DO NOT TAKE!
I would 100% not recommend taking any of her classes. I reached out on multiple occasions for help and she would always give me vague answers. I had to drop the class even with getting a tutor because of how hard she grades. As a elementary teaching major, this class was extremely difficult!
Homework and quizzes are easy, but the papers are such a NIGHTMARE!!!!!! Not only does she grade hard, but she also does not really help you as a writer. She is very rude and does not give guidance. Never take this woman!!! Her homework is not difficult, but when you turn in a essay you will receive a 10/10 on your rough draft. Sounds good right? NOPE. She gives you little to no feedback, then makes up opinionated errors that she will surely use against you in your final draft. Awful Professor.
Please dont take her .... this was the worse class Ive ever taken. Imagine a two part midterm with 30 questions (most multiple choice) and you only have 1 hour to write... or the second part where you only have one hour to write a entire essay. Please save yourself these reviews are real
1 hour to write an essay for midterm and final, shes very rude and I'm sure the only positive comment is written by her it actually sounds like her. Ive literally worked so hard in this class and still failed. Just please don't take her I cant even describe the stress this class has put on me

Her exams are ridiculous with 1 hr to write a paper that she will dissect it to no end. Literally put so much effort into this elective class only to probably get a B.
Whatever you do, do NOT take Kuchta. She is an absolute nightmare that grades unbelievably hard for no reason. In ALL of undergrad I've been a very strong paper writer and she absolutely obliterates your work. She's out of control and honestly should be fired from the university the way she ruins students grades that actually put the work in.
Dont buy into these reviews. I saw firsthand how some of my classmates were responding to assignments they straight up did not follow directions and barely participated. Those are the people leaving these reviews. This is a standard college level class. Just do the reading/ assignments consistently. I really enjoyed the material.
On my first day of class, she talked about not passing students, failing them so they couldnt graduate, etc. and she enjoyed telling us this. These positive reviews must be her because Ive never met anyone that had a positive experience with Professor Kuchta.

She's rude and condescending to her students, I don't know why this woman teaches. I have never earned below an A in English course, but I'm sure I'll end up with a B from her. A lot of these reviews are unfair. She is a very tough grader, but she is usually pretty clear about what she wants. LOTS of assignments due - multiple per week. It gives you a chance to raise your grade if needed. She does give a lot of vague feedback, responds to most emails, but not all. She works hard and puts a lot of effort into the class.
Extremely tough grader. Will put "why" "which" next to every sentence of your paper without further instruction. Puts "NOPE!!!" next to citations and works cited but will not leave a not to tell you what is wrong with it. Very sarcastic with students and often will not take their questions or statements true. OVERALL SUPER RUDE AND DEMEANING.
shes funny in the classroom, the work done in class is easy. the issue is how she grades her essays and the comments she leaves on papers. when you get back your paper expect to see a bunch of "why"s. I wrote a paper on how badly cows are abused, and she put "why" on my sentence about how beating a calf in the face is never okay. lol???
She mentions how she fails her class a lot. The writing center said good things about my projects, but when she grades,she says,"how does this relate?","Why?" in random spots.She also says,"Nope" in the citations. She said that we will fail if our essay doesn't meet the required word count. Then, she said it was too long.

Horrible!!!!!! Content is not hard, but SHE is critical and never satisfied (especially with written portions). I've never made below an A on writings, and I got a low grade for my essay with MANY "nit picky" comments. I even attended the writing center TWICE for this paper. She comes across as bothered/arrogant.
I hated this course. I actually did all the readings and participated in discussions yet she hardly gave me 3/3. I also lost lots of points on the midterm because she wants you to basically copy+paste definitions. So for the final, I didn't read anything, instead I copied every discussion into a word document and used it for the exam. Got a 94%.
If youre a 1st year like me and need the elective DON'T DO IT. So unnecessarily stressful and HORRIBLY paced. Often you dont have the grades from your last paper when you're starting another. Lost my scholarship bc of it. This class will drive you insane. UNO needs to put a warning on her sign-up or take her out of undergrad courses altogether.
This is the least compassionate teacher I have ever taken. If you can, avoid taking her classes at all costs!!!!! She will attempt to fail you at any chance she can get. If she does not like your writing style/flair, any forum posts and essays are wrong or incomplete. Insanely picky.

She provides no constructive criticism whatsoever, you will dread doing any assignment given, she for some reason thinks you don't have other classes take and other responsibilities to fulfill. Shocked to see my papers get the grades they did, as I've always done exceptionally well in English. She will diminish any confidence you have in yourself.

Her exams are open book, but you have to write down HER exact definition (not google definition). You will get it wrong if you don"t put it down exactly. If you're even 5 minutes late you will not be able to take her quizzes (which she gives every class).
She is very strict, especially for an online class. if you submit a great response she will accuse you of cheating, she's also a very hard grader. I personally wouldn't request her again. She also gives many quizzes and gives you 6min to do 5 questions, it's very stressful and uncalled for.
Super nitpicky and difficult to get a good grade. You can follow her instructions to a T and still get it wrong. I thought this class was gonna be great and easy (because reading fiction is) but she just sucks the fun right out of it. Don't pick her.

Don't take this class. I regret not withdrawing when I could because I thought I could tough it out. The homework itself isn't bad it's just the papers and exams. She never seems satisfied with the work being put out and constantly criticizes the class. I'll be lucky to end off with a C and hope it doesn't tank my GPA.

This professor is the worst grader and uses a 4-point scale for 90% of assignments. Be ready for 75%, and 50%s for what feels like no reason. "You have a good start here, but what you need are more specifics and some quotes from the play to illustrate and support your points. What would you point to back up your claims?" (Grade 50%) It tanks GPAs

I read a bunch of these rating before taking this course and then decided "nah, im gonna take her anyway." It was a good decision. There's lots of chances for extra credit and tbh she is very understanding. Don't cheat or use AI and stuff, thats one of her main things and make sure to read. Thats about it, you'll be fine if you do what she says.
She is very thorough with her instructions. So if you follow directions and participate you will learn material and have a good chance of passing. she is a tough grader and she is definitely not a blow off teacher. you need to be engaged in course work from start to finish. She does give extra credit and will help if you see her during OH.
I regret not dropping this class within the first week of the semester. Very tough grader. Midterm was incredibly hard and divided into two parts (short answer and long answer). There is a quiz every single day. If you can't make it to class one day or even if you are 5 minutes late to class, there's no way to make up for that. AVOID

hardest time consuming class. Extremely harsh and rude. She makes a simple assignment difficult like picking a topic for an essay. An example is you have to brainstorm 100 topics (At least 500 words) for an essay. I wrote 90 and she gave me a 3/10 saying I should have wrote 100. Only take if your an English major but even then she's so rude.
As a person, she had a good sense of humor that I really enjoyed, but I'm not here to talk about her as a person; I'm here to talk about her as a professor. She is an EXTREMELY tough grader. Even if you use her feedback to improve, it changes nothing. I got 2 75s and 2 70s on my four papers. Passed with a 69.97. 0/10 do not recommend.
Tough grader who wants things her way. Constant criticism tanks GPAs. But unstuck study helped me with study prep and exam strategies to salvage a decent grade.
By far the worst “English” teacher i've ever had to learn from. She wants everything her way. Not only that, there are some of my classmates who has gotten AI detection off of their papers but used nothing but the story that she provided. Overall, with so much work, she wants everything to be perfect.
This professor is horrible. DO NOT TAKE HER. At the beginning of her class I wasn't doing so well so I thought I needed some tutoring and got that. Turns out it didn't help much AT ALL. Her grading is way beyond horrible. I had one of my LSU graduate cousins help me with one of my essays and got a 70. I DO NOT RECOMMEND TAKING HER FOR ANY CLASS.
this class was the most stressful class of my undergrad career. readings took up most of my time so i was barely able to complete work for other classes, be ready for a quiz every class and a LOT of sarcasm. overall, i wouldn't recommend this class to anyone. oh and attendance is mandatory, leave even 5 min before class ends and it's an absent.

I've never had a professor that was so black and white thinking as Prof Kuchta. Previous comments regarding "she wants it her way" are correct. She will not work with you. When confronted about rigid systems, she will resort to obfuscation and sarcasm. She seems to lack respect for her students in general. I'm not sure why she's here.
DONT TAKE HER CLASS! she only wants her way it doesn't matter if your work right if its not her way you will receive 0, she don't give any chances, if you ask her a question she will responed "read the instructions and don't ask questions". I had to withdrawal her class in the middle of the semester just because the way she treats her student.
Avoid at all costs. I love reading and writing, but this lady makes it impossible to pass this class. Uses multiple AI detectors, so if you use correct syntax, grammar and spelling, then get ready to fail EVERYTHING. I have purposefully dumbed down my skills and don't think when writing, just to get a C in the class. Hopefully AI takes her job!
Avoid at all costs. Constantly accuses people of using AI and thinks since she's been teaching for so long she can “just tell when a response reads as AI.” Posts assignments like every two days. Toughest grader ever. I've always been pretty good at reading/writing but this class is the first English class where I'm genuinely scared I might fail.
Do not take this class. English was always a subject I enjoyed but after this class not so much. She is a very tough grader and does not care if you need help. Her assignments and exams definitely need to be revised and changed because this way of teaching does not seem to be working out for her.
Only take if you HAVE to. She srsly thinks all her students are stupid. Thinks any decent work is AI and assigns work in insane amounts. Then takes forever to grade. Semester ends this week and I have 10+ ungraded assignments. Exams are stupid. Huge ego. She's an insult to the entire school, genuinely. Like just evil. Pure evil.
She DOESN'T teach at all. She assigns so much busy work instead of actually teaching material. Everything is AI to this teacher apparently, so throw away using your brain. Her way if thinking is the only correct response. I've never had a teacher that has acted this way in my life. Do not take her unless you want self sabotage.
Don't take this professor!!! She thinks everything is AI and believes all her students are stupid. I went to every class and did all her work and still almost failed the class. I used to love English and loved writing but I can't believe one semester with this professor changed my entire perspective.
