Ms. Landin is great! Very helpful and really nice. She'll help you in a heartbeat. She does not post powerpoints until after class. I drew little boxes and jotted down notes that weren't on the powerpoints and then transferred them after I printed them out. We never used our text book. Don't buy it unless she tells you to do so.
Shes obsessed with evolution and Charles Darwin. If you disagree with that, don't be afraid to voice your opinion. Tests aren't very hard if you study
Mrs. Landin's class is pretty easy. I got 100s on the first two tests. The course material is fairly simple, and you won't need the textbook. She gives clicker questions for attending class, and a weekly quiz. She will let you replace your worst test grade with the final also. Easy A if you study.
I really enjoyed Ms. Landin's class. I remember taking bio in high school and absolutel hated everything about the subject. I took this class again and absolutely LOVED it. Ms. Landin makes difficult biology material easy to comprehend and always relates info to our youth. Learned so much from her. Very helpful too!
Keeps class pretty interesting and is funny sometimes but you really need to study for her tests because the questions are tricky. You may think you've got the material down but her tests questions sometimes don't make it so easy
Overall a good teacher, answers all questions, keeps your attention throughout class and can even be funny - but make sure you study both the notes and the essay options for all the tests; you might think the material is easy but she puts some cleverly-worded choices on them..
Good professor. She gives lots of physical examples, and will work with you. Tests are not that hard. She is very strict about laptops and cell phones. She gets emotional if you don't follow directions.
Interesting teacher. Calls Darwin her "boyfriend". Doesn't understand family emergency absences and refuses to let you make up tests. Tests are fairly hard so make sure you study. She is not very helpful and is often rude when asked questions.
Lecture quizzes and reading quizzes about every week. Questions can be tricky and are often topics you didn't even cover in class. Obsessed with Darwin and Evolution to the point that it is overbearing. Will take your phone. Study before tests and attend class and you should get a decent overall grade.
She isn't too hard of a teacher but a lot of the times the essays and a few questions on the tests aren't clearly covered in class. She is kind of annoying and will call you out in class for talking and being on your phone.
She is a great professor, I loved this class! The material for the tests is definitely covered in class, not to mention she posts all the notes online along with the study guides. I'm by no means a biology major but this class was never boring and you will learn a lot. She has a quirky sense of humor that makes the class even better.
Lecture Quizzes and Reading Quizzes. The Reading ones are harder. I find myself poring over pages and pages of assigned articles for hours trying to submit them. But she makes it really interesting, so I deal. If you're not a Bio major, this class is great!
Great teacher. Makes the topic interesting. Explains everything. Don't even have to take notes she puts powerpoints online and they cover everything on the test. Reading quizes are a little annoying but not a big deal.
she is unwilling to get to know anybody or be hands on, might as well be an online class. i received an 89.987 and she gave me a B+ without any consideration of extra cred or consideration that i only missed one day of class (which is 100% mandatory). be ready to take on the work and information yourself... besides that good teacher
Had her for BIO105 her tests are fair and pretty straight forward until the end. Her reading quizzes are hard though and require a lot of work. Reading isn't necessary for the quizzes you can get by without it. Attendance is mandatory with clickers which is annoying since her notes are online. She cares about her students and the subject.
Such an amazing teacher. Lectures are interesting and she takes the time to learn student's name. Tests are straight forward, and she takes attendance with clickers. I highly recommend taking her class.
Great teacher! I did not like Bio going into this class, but she changed that for me. She's simplified her reading quizzes; you enjoy learning as you answer questions. If you are a slow test taker, DO NOT take this class. Her tests are fast and short, but you go over them right after you take them. That was great for me, but it's not for everyone.
She is good... class is not mandatory which is nice. There is readings every week and a quiz after but they are easy to get a good grades on. she drops your lowest test grade and two lowest quiz grades. She is nice and funny
I came in not knowing anything about Biology, and being mad because my Geology credit from my college I previously attended didn't transfer and that I had to take ANOTHER science. As the semester progressed I found it to be more interesting and started picking up more and more along the way. I am glad I registered for this course.
You get points for answering questions with a clicker during class, so attendance does sort-of count. Advice: Don't bring someone else's clicker to class and click in for them, she takes surprise attendance sometimes AFTER the first clicker question and you will lose all of your points for the semester. Great class and professor! Easy A.
She really wants her students to succeed and learn. Instead of using a textbook, she posts relevant articles on Moodle and gives weekly reading quizzes online. Attendance does help your grade, but isn't a large percentage. The lowest quiz and exam grades are dropped, she grades on a curve, and gives a few bonus points at the end of the semester.
Great professor. She's really funny and nice to her students. Her lectures are interesting and I really learned a lot from her class. She takes attendance through clicker points. Her tests usually have around 40-45 questions and you have 30 minutes to take them. Would definitely take another class from her.
I AM NOT A BIO MAJOR. That being said I love Dr. Landin. She is such a sweet person and one of the most passionate people about biology. I never did well in science classes in HS, always got C's. I have gotten an A on every assignment thanks to her. You do have to come to class every Friday when attendance is taken. Notes are posted online.
Dr. Landin is a really nice teacher and is willing to help out any student that wants it. Her class isn't tough, and most of the material is rather easy to understand. Tests are long, but are pretty easy if you study a even little bit for them. I would highly recommend taking her for this class if you need a Bio requirement.
Dr. Landin is very sweet and passionate about her job. As long as you are respectful in class (don't talk a ton), she will be happy to help you. The tests and quizzes are a little tricky but definitely not impossible and she curves based on how many people get questions wrong, which is awesome. No text book. Would definitely recommend!
Dr. Landin is a GREAT professor. She is super nice, curves tests based on how many people get each question wrong, and obviously likes her job. She can be funny at times. It isn't hard to pass the class because the material is very basic and she explains things well.
Dr. Landin is a great professor. She is consistently nice and fun to be around. LSC101 was not my favorite topic, but she made the class enjoyable. As long as you attend class and do well on essays, it's pretty easy to pass. I would definitely recommend her.
She is fun and quirky. There were 4 tests and a final. The lowest test grade is dropped. The tests are all curved and the final is curved a lot. If you study, the tests should be an easy grade. The notes and lectures are clear, but sometimes the answers to test questions are only included in the lecture. Basically, you should go.
Wonderful instructor, very thorough about what is expected in class. Her tests are short and you go over them after the test so you have an idea of how you did. Very few homework assignments given, homework is given weekly but the review quizzes can be tricky. The first one is for extra credit btw! NO TEXTBOOK NEEDED TOO!
It was a really interesting class!
She teaches one of those freshman classes that everyone hates, but she's genuinely a great professor who cares. She's also funny and tries to make the most bone-dry material interesting. The building is cold-bring a sweater! The only "textbook" is $11 at the books store and like $7 online.
I loved her! She was funny and I passed her class with an easy A.
Dr. Landin is an absolutely wonderful professor, one of the best I've had at State! I learned a lot in her class, and she really knows what she is talking about, and she is so much fun! The projects you work on are not difficult, but they are really interesting. The lectures, stories, and folklore help you appreciate other cultures as well!
landin is a great professor and is very passionate about what she teaches. Class is entirely lecture, with one large group project. Four tests a semester which you'll need to spend a lot of time studying for. Not an easy A, but an A is accomplishable if you work for it. She takes attendance through clicker pts.
She made me actually enjoy science. In class you take notes from a powerpoint directly but she does a great job of further explaining concepts by drawing on the board and everything. She always makes class fun and I genuinely enjoy going to class. Tests are easy if you study (even a little) and there's one group project but it was so easy
She's so cute and cares so much about biology. Super nerdy and awesome
Dr. Landin is the best! She is so incredibly sweet, funny, and loves all of her students. She is so passionate about teaching and overall she is my favorite teacher at NCSU so far. Her class is super easy because she is such a fantastic teacher!
Dr. Landin was my least favorite professor or teacher of all time. She taught material that had ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with the course. She pushed her personal views on us all year long, including GMOs, religion, and abortion. She even told us once after being asked to post a powerpoint that she would be fired for posting that information. Awful!
Such an easy class, she's really passionate about her subject (nerdy but she gets so excited that its cute), tests are easy if you pay attention and look over notes beforehand, group project super easy. She's a really nice woman and only teaches because she thinks its important and wants people to know about biology.
I truly enjoyed this class. All of my Biology teachers in the past were really mad so it was nice to come to college and finally have a good teacher. Though the tests were tricky, I found that I learned a lot and discovered many topics in Biology super interesting. She truly loves to teach and wants each student to learn.
The class was difficult and a lot of work, but I feel like I actually learned something form this class. The whole point was discussing controversial topics, and whenever we did she made a point to have us argue both sides. Class overall project was a little difficult, but she acknowledged this and is working to make it better in the future.
Dr. Landin is the best professor I have ever had. She is so fun and quirky that all her lectures are so fun to listen to. If you are not a science person, like myself, the class comes with challenges. REALLY helpful to review her uploaded notes on moodle. These are VITAL to a good grade. She constantly made my day with her kindness and excitement.
Dr. Landin was the best professor I had in my first semester. She is really passionate about teaching the class and somehow manages to make it interesting. She also makes the group project interesting enough to make every one work. Definitely take her class if you get a chance.
Professor Landin is awesome! She's really passionate about the material, and teaches in a way that is engaging. Study tips are given at the beginning of the semester, and they are definitely helpful so take advantage! Tests are not difficult if you study. Sit up front and she will get to know your name, which really makes you feel like she cares!
I hate biology but I loved Dr. Landin. She is incredibly sweet and caring. She wants you to do well in her class and is willing to explain anything you don't understand. I went to her office hours multiple times and she was always very helpful. There are clicker points in class every day for attendance, online quizzes, and four in class tests.
I LOVE Dr. Landin! She makes a typically hard intro class very fun and interesting to take! I definitely had to work extra hard in this class to get a good grade, but I think that the knowledge is worth it. Dr. Landin is very fun and understanding if you need help don't be afraid to ask her!
I really didn't like Dr. Landin's teaching style. LSC 101 is THE most dreadful class at NCSU as a life science major and she really didn't help make the class interesting. There was a lot of work for a 2 credit hour class.
You can tell from the first day of class that she absolutely loves what she teaches, her passion and enjoyment of it is really contagious (even if you hate science). Her tests are very straight-forward, so if you study and take good notes, you'll be set. One major downside is that her tests only last half an hour (even if you're not done).
The tests are pretty tough but there is a curve on all the tests including the final exam. You have to put in a lot of effort for the Reading Quizzes and they are pretty hard, so get a group a smart people and do the reading quizzes with them. If you miss class, give your clicker to your friend so that you get points.
Dr. Landin really cares about her students and wants them to do well in her class. She curves her tests, including the final exam. The reading quizzes are tricky, but if you do well on everything else then you should be able to get an A.
I loved Professor Landin's class. She is super funny, keeps lectures interesting, and her tests are fair. You need to go to class because she doesn't post the notes online and a lot is covered each class. There is one group project, but it is really easy and a good way to meet a few people in a huge class. I would recommend to anyone!
Professor Landin is such a nice person and really cares about how you do if you participate and get to know her. This course was rough at times because it was her first time teaching it, but I learned a lot and her tests are fair.
I love her as a person; shes a spunky lady who loves her work but it was impossible to make 100s on her quizzes that were seemingly easy. Tests arent that bad if you study but make sure you study a lot!! One easy group project for the semester, too.
As someone who's been to a community college, I feel that even professors from there are more qualified than Dr. Landin. Often when someone has a question in class about a topic, an answer is to "google that". The ppts cram in data that we don't have time to review before a test, and the tests are often more concept based instead of fact like ppts
Dr. Landin is a great teacher but is a bit all over the place with her slides. She is new to teaching Animal Phylo so things are still being updated but be ready to STUDY. Minor details that were mentioned once are on tests and quizzes but if you study at least a week in advance, you'll be ok. She's super easy to talk to in office hours as well.
So funny and sweet! Her class was very interesting
Professor Landin is not good. Sweet lady though. It is her second semester teaching this course. There are only three tests and a quiz every weekend which no one passes and takes a long time to complete. Her notes don't make any sense and are confusing.
Dr. Landin is a BLESSING! She truly cares about the success of her students. Her lectures are engaging and interesting. If you take her class, go to office hours and get to know her! She is such a cool person. This is a difficult class, but it is more than possible to be successful with her help. She even taught us the proper way to study.
Dr Landin is a god. The semester isn't even over yet and I'm already upset I can't have her as my professor next semester for BIO183. She is absolutely hilarious and is clearly very passionate about biology. Highly recommend 10/10 professor
Quiz every weekend. Exam every unit. Quizzes need to be taken seriously if you want to get good grade. Exams are straight-forward. Sometimes you can overthink things, thats a prob for students. Nice Lady, Spunky. Listen to her lectures, will help you pass. Take notes. Study for her tests. Nothing unexpected, this was a great intro bio.
Professor Landin did not make the course work harder than it should be and when she sees questions that many students got wrong, she will give extra credit or omit the question. Her personality comes out in lecture and tries to keep things fun.
Dr. Landin is a strange lady, but she grew on me as the semester went on. She is funny & wants to know her students. her lectures are kinda all over the place and can be hard to follow at times. The tests are hard, you have to study a lot to get a good grade but she does curve. Going to class is important for clicker points and to hear her lectures
Dr. Landin is a nice woman, but she makes what should be an easy A a difficult class. Every test is curved which helps, but not by much. Her tests are mostly material she mentioned in passing or not at all, making them much harder than necessary.
if you havent taken AP BIO in high school I would not recommend Landin. She expects that you have already mastered terms that are only taught in AP Bio rather than standard high school biology.
She is very opinionated and her opinion is the only one that matters. There are opinion based questions on her tests so be sure to pay attention in lecture to known what her opinion is or you will get it wrong. Her quiz and test questions are worded badly and can be hard to understand. She is also rude.
Landin is a one-of-a-kind person. She tastefully makes the most inappropriate, yet funny jokes. She is a very fair grader and gives you what you need to do very well in the class. She has a very blunt, straightforward, and quirky personality that makes her enjoyable to listen to. She also makes a point to get to know as many students as possible.
Dr. Landin will help you if you reach out to her however, she makes the class much harder than it needs to be. The tests are extremely hard because most of the questions do not seem to come directly from the notes but rather from stuff she briefly mentions in class. Also, her weekly quizzes are impossible.
Dr. Landin is amazing. She really cares about her students but if you are looking for an easy A or B, this is not the class. She wants you to learn and apply rather than memorize. The final is very hard and there is a lot of information but she was worth it.
Quizzes are very confusing. Is always having to take questions out because she realized she didnt create the quizzes correctly. Does not like to think she is wrong. Her opinion is the only one that matters. I got half the time I was suppose to get on a test. Went to office hours to talk to her about it. She told me there was nothing she could do.
She is a good teacher and the class isn't bad considering that it's biology. She hates the textbook don't waste money on it.
Landin is a great person, but not so great of a teacher. She has weekly mini quizzes that you can do better on with the less you try (no seriously). Her tests are really hard, but she gave my section an 8 point curve or so on every test. She is EASILY accessible outside of class. You just really have to study in this course to do well.
She often throws so much information at you that you'll never remember all of it for the test. Everyone fails every mini quiz and test because she words her questions in such a confusing way that make you wonder what the heck she is even asking you. Great person but not the best professor.
Dr. Landin was really fun in class and I enjoyed her lectures however, her tests are HARD. Make sure you take good notes in class as her powerpoints are practically useless to review. Her weekly mini-quizzes are also way too hard and every time I talked to her after class she was rude.
The class is only difficult if you don't put in the effort. Make sure to go to class b/c she'll say things not on the slides . She's super nice and means well, her tests are pretty difficult but she curves them by like 8% each time. A bit frustrating of a class b/c there's SO much info, but I think she's really good about making it all connect
I personally really liked Dr. Landin's class. She was a really genuine teacher that curved tests as well as the final. I would most certainly take her study advice at the beginning of the semester. She integrates it into how her tests are made. She was pretty cool and very easy to access outside of class for help. I got a 100% on the final.
Her lecture is hilarious, you would enjoy the lecture. However, the class itself is VERY HARD, A TON to memorize.
She's okay at best. Very opinionated and managed to make biology political. Tests have almost nothing to do with lectures, and quizzes every week are very difficult. Avoid if you can.
If you email her with questions you have no idea to the answer to about lectures or upcoming exams, she will throw it out and say for you to figure it out yourself. Also her tests are multiple choice but very subjective, more than one right answer tests which ultimately you will get questions wrong because it is not the "correct" answer.
She is very spirited and has a lot of energy, which is great if you don't think you can keep up with boring long lectures. Her tests and quizzes are tricky. She's very nice and is always open to answering questions.
Her tests are extremely hard and a lot of the questions are subjective, or two or more answers are correct (on multiple choice). She also has weekly quizzes that count to your grade that are extremely difficult and take a lot of time to complete in one sitting. Overall, the graded portion of class is something almost impossible to achieve an A
Good prof overall. Her lectures cover material very quickly and she may not teach material at the same pace as the lab. Her tests are a little opinionated and her questions can be super specific, knowing only the basics of the topic won't work for you. Her weekly quizzes may seem impossible at first, but if you attend her lectures, they get easier.
Professor Landin was a great teacher and person and I really enjoyed being in her class. The main reason I would not take her again is because she gives the class 30 mins for a test that has 45 questions (including questions with long paragraphs) which is about 30 seconds for each question which is a bit ridiculous. Her quizzes are also very hard.
I absolutely loved Professor Landin. I thought she was a great teacher, and made class fun even though it was biology. She has been one of my favorite teachers. If you do not study the way she explains to study for the tests, and not study for the quizzes, you will not do well in the class. The tests are difficult, but not impossible.
Dr. Landin was a perfectly competent and friendly teacher. She used Flipd for attendance, which I've never been a fan of, but she gave the information in a clear, concise manner. Her weekly reading quizzes were difficult, but she made the lectures interesting.
I loved having Landin as my bio prof! I loved her lectures and the material. No textbook, which is always a plus from me. The RRQs are stupid and oddly difficult but she drops the lowest two quiz grades.
Doctor Landin is one of my favorite professors. She makes a difficult topic fun and easy to understand. She cares about her job and her students. Her RRQs are hard to get a good grade on but are really such a small part of your grade they dont matter.
Dr. Landin was a really amazing professor to have. She's absolutely hilarious and does her best to present the material in a way that's easy to understand. The lecture portion of the class we pretty easy; however, the weekly quizzes that she gives can be pretty tricky.
Dr. Landin is an adequate professor. She holds review sessions and office hours. However, when taking an exam that is not the final you have 30 minutes to complete because the remaining 20 minutes is to go over the answers of the exam. You are not allowed to leave during that time after you finish the exam. Quizzes are tricky. Brings in politics.
Doesn't use the book, very lecture-oriented. Lot's of quiz grades. I didn't really take the class serious in the beginning of the semester, but I started going to her office hours halfway through and that changed my life. Also: take notes the way she says to take notes. It seriously helps. She's very helpful in her office hours. Very passionate :)
Show up to lecture and follow her studying advice and you will do fine
Dr. Landins weekly quizzes are very political and most the time they do not relate to lectures. She only allows 30 minutes for each unit test and doesn't prepare you for the test. Questions are specific and don't match material given. DO NOT TAKE.
I loved her class!! her wuizzes are harder than the test but overall you will pas!! she will help you!
I LOVED HER!!! She teaches using 2 15-20 min "mini" lectures during class, and she's very easy to follow. If you have taken both ap bio and apes then her class is super easy. Because of covid, she uploaded lecture videos to moodle, so if you wanted to, you only had to show up on test day. All in all, easy to reach outside of class and a fun prof.
One of my fav professors, my bio lab grade is what brought me to the b- but she was very caring. Definitely need to work for your grade but she makes class enjoyable and is the cutest lady. Drop one test and quiz grade. Quizzes are very difficult but look up the answers, something I didn't do until later in the semester and it bit me in the butt
Nice person but seems to be a little lazy when teaching. Honestly just watch the lectures at 1.75 speed on your own time and take notes and you can do ok in the class. Cant get away without studying, you need to know concepts covered in the lectures or its game over. Once you find how to effectively take notes the class will become easier.
In order to succeed in Dr. Landin's class, it is most important to study the way that she recommends (active recall). Attending her office hours is extremely beneficial and she is a very thoughtful professor. Tests are timed, so if you have testing anxiety, I recommend this class to help with that. This class is easily manageable if you delegate.
She has a really good teaching technique, 2 mini lectures per class day and you can go back and watch them again whenever you need. To get an A in the class just make sure you study all the info, and can explain it out loud. Her tests are also super easy, I had a 97% test average score and got 100 on the final.
Dr. Landin is a good lecturer, and going to office hours is super helpful if you have questions. The weekly quizzes can be kinda hard, but they're open note and no time limit. Tests are pretty average imo, nothing that she doesn't prepare you for.
Love Dr. Landin so much ! Her class isn't hard as long as you pay attention and put effort in to study. We had around 4 tests and almost every week we had a quiz, but they were fairly easy to do. She knows so much about the subject and also cares deeply for her students. She's pretty funny too.
Though the material can sometimes be difficult, she always keeps the class entertained, starting with a song playing on the projector, telling jokes, and making the lecture interactive for all. She does make you create your study tools but it's helpful. She's an excellent professor and she's great if you're starting out in Biology.
Dr. Landin is amazing! She always keeps lectures super interesting even with some difficult material. Lectures are taught in class and any unfinished lectures are given to finish outside class, but that rarely happens. Lowest test and lowest weekly reading quiz grade drops at the end of the semester.
Dr. Landin is a really good professor. Her attendance is only semi-mandatory and all the lectures are posted on moodle. As long as you take notes and pay attention in the lectures, you should be totally fine.
Professor Landin is an amazing teacher! She is very passionate about biology, which makes lectures enjoyable. She provides lots of study assistance, as she wants her students to succeed. Lowest test and quiz grades are dropped, which is very helpful. You are only required to attend 5 lectures per unit. Take her class!!!
Dr. Landin is one of the best teachers at NC State. You only have to attend 5 lectures per unit, but I recommend attending more if possible. She does the most she can to help her students pass her class. Your lowest unit test and quiz grades are dropped. Paying attention in her lectures and studying will help you do great on the test.
This class is extremely difficult for a beginner biology class. Units are long so there's a lot of material you need to learn before every test. No matter how well you know the notes it will not help. You need to psychoanalyze every question to understand it which is impossible because she only gives 30 mins. She's also very passive aggressive.
Shes a great Professor who is very knowledgeable. Very funny and caring. The tests are a little hard (but I'm not the best at biology) but overall great experience and would highly recommend taking one of her classes. Pros: you get one drop test and one drop homework Cons: The Lab is horrible but she doesn't teach that
Dr. Landin was my favorite professor this semester, I think she makes the class fun and clearly cares about her students.
BIO 181 was a very tough class, but Professor Landin did make it manageable. The only grades are RRQs and exams. Must do well on RRQ's or it can be detrimental to your grade. The lab grade carries your total grade. Engage with the material learned on a regular basis, repetitively. Tests are not accurately aligned with the content in class.
She is an excellent professor who really cares about her students well-being. She has no problem explaining anything you don't understand. There are quizzes that are open note but they can be a bit tricky. The tests are very easy if you can explain the learning objectives. She has study hall after the last class before each test which is helpful.
She is a great professor who really cares about her students well-being and is passionate about biology . There are quizzes that are open note but they can be pretty tricky. The tests are really easy and straightforward if you can explain all the learning objectives. She has study hall after the last class before each test which is very useful.
Dr. Landin was an amazing professor to have. I took this class as someone with less of an interest in STEM yet found myself engaged in her class. She was interactive and straight forward with grading and due dates. She did an amazing job with her covering of environmental issues and teaching stuff that would stick. I would take this class again.
Prof Landin loves her job and it makes this class so worth it. She cares about her students a lot. RRQs (open note) and lab carry your grade. RRQs can be a little harder, but the tests are straightforward if you put in a little studying. Very enjoyable class and there's study hall after class if you have questions. Take Landin!!!
Dr.Landin is enthusiastic and passionate about what she teaches. If you put in the work getting an A is very achievable. Tests are graded on a nice curve and Dr.Landin truly cares about her students. You only need to attend five times for ever unit test period which is nice.
class is hard and you need to study but shes super good at teachering the material and always willing to answer questions, tries to make class fun and really cares about her students.
I could really tell that she cared about her students and wanted us to succeed. Her class content was on lecture slides. She would give quizzes once a week to help prepare students for the tests. Tests were given in the lecture hall and were 40-ish questions all multiple choice. I do recommend studying because questions refer back to the lecture.
She is a great teacher and very passionate, however, this is the second time I am taking this class due to my lack of studying last yr. PREPARE TO STUDY! This class has a TON of material; if you dont study, you will not pass. Class is very fun and interesting, & labs are a blast, but make sure to keep up with weekly studying or you will get behind
This is my 2nd time taking this class as I did not study nearly enough last yr. YOU NEED TO STUDY! Dont think you can cram the night before the test and pass. There is so much material to cover and so much to remember, but if you break down the material into those phylum sheets, its much more manageable. Classes are fun and labs are one of the best
This class is HARD! It is an interesting class to take, I learned a lot of information. You need to fill out the sheets she has for each phylum or you will get information confused. She has weekly quizzes so make sure you keep up with your notes. This is one of the hard classes that actually made me feel like I was learning instead of struggling.
I really loved this class. She was very energetic and explained things clearly. She did go through the slides quickly during the lecture. The tests were multiple choice and she did a review session right afterwards. She seems passionate about the topic.
Nice lady but if you plan on taking her online version of BIO 181...don't. Tests are nearly impossible to finish, lecture videos take up a lot of time, lab is insane- requires you to buy different materials each week adding a good deal of time to already long lab hw's. I should not have to spend this much time and still not receive a good grade.
She's a good professor but there is a lot of work. You need to study for the tests to do well; you can't just wait till the last day to study. She genuinely cares about her students and she has YouTube videos on the lectures if you miss them. The videos are great for studying and taking notes if you miss a class or don't understand the material
Dr. Landin is the absolute best and would 100% take her again. She curves tests very generously, it is very possible to get a high A in this class. You need to study the content and don't wait until the last minute but if you are prepared her tests should be easy for you. Dr. Landin is a national treasure and people were sad to see her class end.
Dr. Landin is THE BEST! She is so sweet and deserves the world! The tests are way more difficult than I was used to in high school, but all in all, this was a great class and all I had to learn were better studying habits. She's SUPER engaging and was my favorite class of the day, every day. Love her!
She is an amazing professor. Lectures are very notes heavy, and the best way to study for tests are through her learning objectives after each topic. She is very easy to follow, but tests are mostly on application. She always made class fun and interesting.
Dr. Landin is probably the sweetest lady ever! However, the lab and tests were extremely difficult and time-consuming. This was probably one of the most stressful classes I have ever taken. I constantly had to worry about this class because of the lab. The exams were only 40 mins with 50 questions which made it very difficult. I was very stressed!!
Professor Landin's class was very easy and I didn't have trouble getting an A. I studied a bit for her tests, but no more than 2 hours per test. She's very lecture heavy and her tests are long, but she ALWAYS adds a curve. She's funny and you can tell she cares about her students. Make sure you do the reading quizzes and you'll be fine.
If you aren't good at studying, this isn't the professor for you. Dr. Landin is very passionate about what she teaches, and that comes through in her lectures. If you don't attend class, you will not pass. There is so much content covered each week and quizzes are given every Monday to ensure students are keeping up with their notes.
Very pleasent person and has good intentions, but do not take her online 181 class. The amount of work required for the Lab activites is actually insane and out of pocket. Half of them require you to go into the woods searching for bugs and others make you have to go to the store to buy random materials so you can start the labs in the first place.
Dr. Landin is very passionate about what she teaches, but her tests are what gets me. She only gives 30mins to complete your test, and most of them range from 41-45 questions. She says you should "know the information as quick as you know your birthday," but I feel like even if you DO know the information, it's more you trying to beat the clock.
Professor Landin is sweet and passionate, however tests are difficult and very time-restricted. Questions were almost always on the most random fact that we were expected to memorize or something she said in a lecture one time and never touched on again. The test is curved quite a bit and she gives opportunity for extra credit pretty frequently.
Loved Dr. Landin her lectures are very interesting. The course itself isn't hard as long as you're actively taking notes and spending a few hours a week studying.
Dr. Landin is so sweet, although her tests are very lecture heavy she gives opportunities for extra credit and curves every test. If you study and ask questions you will do fine.
Dr. Landin is amazing. I was not excited for this class as I have never enjoyed natural science but she made it so easy to learn. You will need to study, this is not a class that you can just easily pass. Overall, if you are wanting to take this class, she is the BEST option!
Dr. Landin is a good professor but the tests are pretty hard. All information comes from slides so it does help to be in class. She does a good job of explaining but the tests seem to be harder than what we learn in class. She does drop a test and quiz so that is our form of extra credit. All together, she is a good mix of caring but also learning.
She has very nice and funny lectures. Tests are very hard, but if you pay attention in class and take notes, it should be manageable
Easy class, but she makes it harder than it has to be. Lot of tricky questions on the test that for the class difficulty, feels a little odee. I'm about to take the 4th and last test, wish me luck!
i hope the guy below me fails his test
Try to take it in person. Super nice lady who responds to emails. ~2 hours of video lectures every week, taking notes will add 2 extra hours, which she expects you to watch 2-3 times. Tests and labs get exceptionally harder, online labs require way too much time and materials. Overall I wish I had not taken this class
Professor Landin is engaging and cares about her students, but the class can be challenging. Studying the content and using resources like Unstuck AI helps manage the workload. Overall, a worthwhile experience.
While Dr. Landin was an amazingly funny and kind professor, this class was extremely difficult. She is very test heavy, with 4 exams and a required final. A lot of the exams make no sense and test you on minute details. She clearly cares a lot about her students, but this class was too difficult to make up for that.
A fine professor and lots of past lectures listed online, but tests were overly difficult and tested on minute details. She tries to make lectures humorous but it can sometimes just feel tedious. Attendance is 5/7 classes. Was not the most compassionate, but could be challenging with 250 students. Don't recommend if you have other options.
She is great, her lectures are easy to follow, and you do have to study a good amount, but it is not that bad. I simply rewatch her recorded lectures and answer the learning objectives to study and it has worked well for me. All you have to do is study to succeed and you will do just fine. She is very funny and nice, also go to her study halls.
Just a great professor that brings a lot of energy to her lectures, you can tell she is passionate about what she teaches. Tests will have a curve and if you pay attention to the lectures and take good notes, you shouldn't have a problem. Go to office hours as well, great way to connect with her and other students.
She is passionate, but she misses the mark with the online course. She has 4 exams and a Final which is overkill. Studied for every exam but the exams themselves were focused on specifics. She doesn't give a study guide…And doesn't understand that majority of us are taking this class for credits, not for a career. The workload was too stressful.
Im not a bio person, needed this for gen ed.The lectures to me didn't fully encompass the exam material, the resources she did post on moodle was helpful.I took this class when struggling mentally but due to me sitting in the front and coming to majority of the classes, she sympathized with my situation and raised my grade! Overall a great class.
I liked her, I would retake her. As a freshman, it was eye-opening to see the rigor of exams, but I feel like she prepared me well for future classes. She's so passionate and I loved it. Personally, I love the weird things we learned about but I could see how others find it boring. For the final I pulled 2 all-nighters and watched every lecture: 94
Dr. Landin is a great professor, passionate and I feel like she made it easy for me to learn. Caring, inspiring, great person to talk to. This semester was hard, and I felt like the tests were so draining but she curves them and really saves you. I thought I'd fail the final, got an 83, and you have to take time to make study guides, helps a lot!
Dr. Landin is very funny and passionate about what she teaches. There are 4 tests (1 drops) and a final; quizzes are weekly and open-note. STUDY!!!! You will be fine if you study IN DETAIL. Tests are multiple choice but ask specific questions. Attendance is required 5 times per unit (I loved this!) To study, make to go through ALL the notes.
Funny and easy to understand, test were super easy and she gave us a curve on each test
Dr. Landin makes the lectures interesting and funny. You need to try and come to all of them because it is easy to fall behind. She covers A LOT of material in class, and staying after was really helpful because if people stay she will go over stuff. Fill out your phylum sheets and the sheets recommended for quizzes, they are very helpful.
Really cool professor very kind and easy to talk to. Only issue was so much busy work. Assignments take a lot of time
Very hard exams and quizzes, goes through slides very fast, expectations are not very clear either. The lab was okay but some of it was busy work. Quizzes every week. If you miss a day because of weather or being sick... good luck. Only took it to fulfil my requirement. LOTS of material to memorize as well.
Has very unreasonable expectations for projects. Seem to respect neither the standards and the ethical practices of science nor the time of her students.
Dr. Landin is a scientist who teaches introductory science classes, but seems afraid to have her students actually use science in class. She is more interested in your ability to format a document than your ability to delve into scientific inquiry and discovery and engage with intro biology materials. Also requires attendance for an online class.
She is super nice and funny and I genuinely enjoyed her lectures but her tests are timed 30 minutes unlike the other BIO 181 classes. If you are not a fast test taker I would not recommend as scoring was much lower because it very rushed.
This online class is extremely difficult. Wide range of materials to learn with tests on average 3 weeks apart OR LESS. Not to mention does not give study guides or outlines for material for any exams including the cumulative final. I am so stressed out.
I sometimes joke to make a rate my professor review, but it had to be done for this class. Dr. Landin is very nice and personable. She has open note online quizzes, the tests are unreasonably hard. These are short, timed tests that make you think you did good but if you don't put around 6 hours of studying before the test AT LEAST, you will fail.
I liked Dr. Landin as a person, she is funny, kind, and engaging, however this course covers a lot of material, which is taught quickly, and her tests basically set you up for failure. Unless you live and breathe biology, you have to take the 3-4 hours of study a week per credit hour thing seriously with this class.
This is an incredible professor. She really wants you to succeed. The only bone I have to pick is with the online lab, I would not recommend the online version for 2 reasons. 1. I want to go pre-med and pre-med schools are more drawn to in-person labs 2. you need to provide your own crazy materials and it is so hard to plan your time to complete.
LOVED Dr. Landin as a person, you can tell she genuinely knows what she's talking about and she likes teaching. The biggest issue I had was that you only have 30 minutes for a 40 question test because she spends the rest of the class going over it, and you can't leave early. Also, the order we went through units didn't make sense sometimes.
Why the truck was I doing art in a BIO class. Worth like 25 points. On the syllabus it says 6 hours of study. IT TAKES ME 12-18 hours with the load she gives you. This class pmo so bad. DON'T TAKE IT ONLINE
Totally recommend Prof. Landin, she's amazing. Her lectures aren't boring and she's very interactive in them. She gives out quiz assignments at the end of every week, but they aren't hard. There are 4 exams and then the final, but you're able to drop one of the four.
I don't usually leave bad reviews but I'm SO glad to see that others hated the online class. Dr. Landin means well but her class/teaching style is genuinely awful. Also the tests are rarely related to the content and are so hard to pass unless you're a BIO major. PLEASE save yourself unnecessary stress and take literally anyone else for this class.
None of the tests cover the power points she teaches in class, if you aren't a bio major or really passionate about the subject DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. She spends most of class time doodling things that are irrelevant. Additionally tests are 50 questions with only 30 minutes to do them and she reminds you of how behind you are every 5 mins.
DO NOT TAKE IF YOU ARE NOT A BIO MAJOR. This class has extremely tough, in depth test and you only get 30 minutes of your class time to take it. If you are not extremely intrested in biology it is very difficult to listen to and under stand the materials. She draws alot of the lecture and that is just not helpful at all. There are zero study tools.
She spends way to much time in class drawing useless things and goes through slides really fast so you dont have time to write stuff down. The tests are extremely hard you have 30 minutes to answer 40-50 multiple choice questions and goes over the answers at the end of the test.
If you have the chance to take a class with Dr. L- DO IT! I can not recommend her enough. You can tell that she wants her students to succeed. She is very funny and tries to keep lectures lighthearted. Her tests are very specific to her class and the things she says in class- so attendance is very important but I love Dr. Landin!
I actually enjoyed the lectures because she's a great speaker and is good at keeping the class interested. She was not accessible outside of class WHATSOEVER. She didn't respond to a single one of my emails the entire semester. The tests are not difficult if you just PAY ATTENTION in class. She tests stuff she went of for 5 minutes in class, btw.
Dr. Landin is clearly passionate about what she teaches and is very funny. As a visual learner, I personally liked when she would draw pictures as an extra way of explaining topics. The tests are 30 mins. with usually 40 questions, which is a short turn around, but if you study, you should be fine. She offers help with study halls after class.
Dr. Landin's lectures were fairly easy to follow along to, however, she tended to move quite quickly. Some of the units she should have split up due to their extreme amount of content. However, she held study halls after every class and provided many study resources. Also a bonus is that she drops your lowest test grade!
I came from a very competitive rigorous highschool - so im not stupid and i work very hard. this is actually the worst class i took my first semester. dr landin is so nice but she did not emphasize any of the content that was on the tests. the tests were incredibly specific and so hard. do not take her.
Enjoyed her class. Lectures did get boring at times. This is a content-heavy course, definitely need to study (& she does not give many resources to help study for tests). Puts HEAVY curves on all exams, including the final + extra credit. Study for her exams by using the learning objectives & you will get an A. Drops lowest test and quiz grade.
I LOVE Dr. Landin, but I think if you don't like bio/science then you might disagree. It is very lecture heavy and you def have to show up to class to get all the content. I liked how she tested and as long as I studied a lot I was able to get an A+ on the tests (she curves). Her office hours are helpful. I disliked the lab but that's not on her.
such a sweet woman. genuinely enjoyed the crap out of her class, and you could tell she was passionate about what she taught when you talked to her. she heavily curves tests and drops the lowest grade for it. the lab wasn't too great, but she had no real control over it. lectures are important, and pay attention to her wording on tests! :]
Dr. Landin was an amazing professor. She was very kind, and she made the lectures interesting. The exams are all multiple choice and short which was nice.
Dr. L genuinely cares about her students. The tests are not easy (you have to study and put time/effort into studying) but use the learning objectives on Moodle to study for the tests and you'll be fine. Def go to lecture because she explains topics in a way that is much easier to understand than just looking at the lecture slides.
DR LANDIN IS THE BEST I LOVE HER!! u get xtra credit for doing the tophats but its not really required. u can tell she is passionate about what she teaches! DO NOT WAIT UNTIL LAST MINUTE IF U PICK THE CREATIVITY/SUSTAINABILITY PROJECT!! study everything u learn in lecture and then a little more for tests and u will do GREAT!!
