Sorta sucks. Doesnt explain stuff well.
Not as much fun as prior mus apprec professor, but class is still interesting and a very easy A.
Extremely patronizing and disrespectful instructor. Treats all students like idiots. Takes every opportunity to show off her musical skills needlessly in class. Get your work in on time; she doesn't accept late papers in any case but the tests are easy.

Should be an easy course, but act's as if she's teaching a 300 level course. She makes the class more difficult than it should have be. I suggest taking the class with someone else. And she does like to show off and brag on her flute, which gets annoying.
Turned out to be one of my hardest classes. Her tests ask questions that are not from lecture or from the readings. If you take her class, do not miss!!! Also - she loves Beethoven, so that's one way to get on her good side!
If you attend lecture and do the readings, the tests are easy to pass. She's clear in her explanations and I learned a lot from this course.

She knows what she is talking about but is not so good at making music as wonderful and exciting as it is...she speaks to softly and is too boring (sorry)

can we please go over some rep?
Most of these ratings are ridiculous. Dr. Lau knows her stuff and is willing to help anyone in her class. If you don't like or pass the class, it's your own fault. I loved it.
She seemed like a really nice lady, but she's not very helpful when you try talking to her about concerts and what not. Her lectures are fairly easy to understand but sometimes she tries really hard to get through certain topics that she moves so quickly and it can make it hard to comprehend.
Fairly easygoing instructor. Always clear and easy to follow. Makes her expectations know from the very beginning. Some excellent concerts she recommends. Though she does tend to go off on tangents about seemingly inane things.
not hard, just go to class and the test is easy. the book is not all that nessesary but the listening examples that come with it are.
Expectations not always clear. Didn't really learn much.
I enjoyed this class. Music appreciation was more interesting than I thought.
I had a background in music, but still learned a lot from this class! Tests are easy, she gives you a study guide. Great guest performers. It's impossible to fail this class because of the amount of extra credit offered. Easy, and I still missed a few classes. Like someone else said, book not needed, but music that comes with it is.
easy class no need for book just music... she gives you everything for the tests in lectures
Going to class is easier than using the study guide, the notes/defs she gives you there are different than in the book. Really awesome, modern guest musicians. Good history class. 4 tests, 2 concerts assignments (you just attend and get a stamp). Oh, did I mention? Unlimited xtra credit?
If one doesn't study for the test, one will fail. So Study. No surprises on test, all material is given. She's an overall good professor.
It's easy enough to sit through this class if you have something else to do and just jot down the notes, but listening to Dr. Lau is torturous. "Um...like...and...um...you know...and um...and um...you know...and again...like um....you know". Constantly. So be prepared for that. She also talks very fast and goes on pointless tangents.
No reason to fail this class, not really sure how Dr. Lau is as a lecturer cuz i never went to class, the reviews are online and as long as you study the music and the defs than it should be an easy A. The first test is torture listening to the gregorian chant but it gets a lot better trust!
She was very clear,straight-forward,and there was no confusion as to what her expectations were and what material she would be testing. I didn't want to take this class but ended up enjoying it.U don't need textbook, just music on website. She gives study guides for exams and offers extra credit. I appreciated her approach and straight-forwardness.
Just go to class, and you can get an A
The blinky thing she does when she gets really excited about what she's teaching is so cute!!! "And Bach is...um...(blink blink blink blink) the...um...father of keyboard music.." And those pictures of her daughter on her screensaver (she acted all surprised when the whole class could see them being projected.) Adorable lady. Highly recommended!
Professor Lau is a sweet woman and someone you might want to get to know as a person, but as far as her lecture skills..she is alright at explaining certain things and not in others. It is more helpful for me to go home, skip class, and read the material in class. Make sure to know when guest artists go because she tests on what they played.
Class is boring!! I'm about to fall asleep all the time in that class. Test are hard!! She is mean! Don't take it!!
I took the online course and found it really easy. Just stay on top of all the work and it's an easy A.
I took the online music appr. It was pretty easy you just had to really listen to the examples and be prepared for the test. The online doesn't really get you involved its more just to get a prereq out of the way. SHe does respond promptly to your emails
Prof. Lau is very knowledgeable about the subject. Sometimes she is repetitive and she can be a bit dry. Attendance is not mandatory, but if you attend class and take notes, you don't need to study the text too much. Attendance and knowledge of the listening examples will give an easy A. I really enjoyed the class and learned a lot.
Most irritating professor I have ever had at UNM. She spoke so fast it was nearly impossible to understand her. Refused to post her lecture notes despite the fact that they were a couple slides taken directly from the book. Easy to get a good grade, but not worth the time sitting in class listening to her.
Ms.Lau teaches Music appreciation like the whole class are music majors. You need to look over the book as you cover material. The tests are moderately difficult. The best way to pass is go every day , and pay attention. Then study what you learned. If you get side tract ( which is easy to do), then you will have no idea whats going on.
I took her class online. She posts the lectures as one large document to read and then assigns textbook reading and listening samples. You really only need to read the textbook and the listen to the samples, those are very important. This class was very easy and I enjoyed the course material.
i found her class to be just an easy class. some of the information is interesting. she does get very side tracked and it does get irritating, she talks way too much about the rules instead of the material that needs to be cover. overall the class is ok. i prefer her over erica otero
Dr. Lau is an extremely knowledgeable professor. She does talk a little on the fast side, but if you sit close to the front it's not hard to hear/understand her. I didn't buy the book and was able to find all the listening examples online. Her tests are directly from the lectures so attend regularly! Overall, interesting class, great teacher.
Easy A--weekly quiz, no exams, no papers, no discussions (online course). The weekly quiz is the same format each week and is a breeze! Make sure you have the quiz completed in time and you will get an easy A+/GPA booster out of this class!
Very knowledgeable and interesting professor, especially when she goes off on random, hilarious tangents. Finds a way to make old music fun and relevant. Show up and listen, and you get an A. Good luck getting La Donne é Mobile out of your head also.
Dr. Lau is an extremely knowledgeable professor. She does talk a little on the fast side, but if you sit close to the front it's not hard to hear/understand her. I only used the textbook to look up definiteions in the glossary and would suggest purchasing study space subscription for the listening examples instead.
TALKS SO FAST!! very intelligent and going to class REALLY helps with success on exams. classes can be boring but she only gives important information! TURN IN WORK ON TIME!
Lau is a great professor! I took her class during intersession and she got through the material quickly and wasn't boring. If you can, take her 2 week intersession class! It's quick, only two exams.
She is very nice, but going into this class not knowimg much about the fundametals of music was tough. She does go fast but all those notes were a big help for exams. Study, study, is what helped me and concert assignments are very important to do.
she is a terrible teacher if the student is not knowledgeable about music prior to taking the class. She seems to go extremely fast and asks exam questions that have never been talked about
She talks extremelly fast and just loves to talk all day. She needs to learn how to slow down and relax, it makes me feel uncomfortable and stressed just listening to her lecture. She is very knowledgable though.
This class is an interesting class for those with prior knowledge to classical music. For those of you who kno nothing about early music i urge you not to take this class due to the assumption Jennifer Lau makes about the students musical knowledge. She seems to make everything more difficult than need be in order to come off as challenging.
I took Dr. Lau's online 8-week class. Super easy compared to her on-campus lecture section. All you have to do is listen to the music samples, read the chapters, and take a weekly quiz.
I thought this class was really fun. Dr. Lau explains everything needed for the test during lecture, so just attend lecture and you'll be fine. In prep for the tests, just listen to the music samples and review terms. Dr. Lau is really good about explaining exactly what is needed to pass the course, so just listen.
This class was horrible, Dr.Lau clearly does not understand this class is a mandatory arts class for everyone to take, we are not actually music majors. She talks the entire class, and her test are confusing and difficult and never cover anything we learned. Take it with another professor.
The class was definitely not easy and it was extremely boring. Dr.Lau loves to hear herself talk all most as much as the rude and disrespectful teacher assistants. I would steer clear of this class.
Lau is a very difficult professor.. she definitely does not realize that this class is not an advanced music class. The info she expects you to already know is ridiculous! If you are reading this, STAY CLEAR OF THIS TEACHER! Unless you have a background with music take this class with someone else!
DO NOT TAKE THIS ONLINE COURSE! Lau is a horrible professor, she is condescending and not helpful what so ever. Her lectures do not align with the online quizzes at all.
This class is extremely difficult. Be prepared.
Dr. Lau makes this class impossible. She is difficult and rude. Wish I would have viewed these comments before signing up for this class.
I honestly think this class is easy, AS LONG as you study for the tests, do your homework and concert assignments. Dr.Lau was helpful, she asked questions and offered her help if needed. However, not coming from some musical knowledge can affect you.
Mrs. Lau speaks wayyyy to fast! Her class is hard for someone with no musical background. I do NOT recommend this class as she makes it very difficult and does not realize that a good percentage of the class are not music majors! Take this class online because it is a bad choice to take with Lau.
VERY hard to understand if you have no musical background. Go to class and stay on top of your studies. This class is not an easy A.
I found this class to be very difficult. She seems to forget that a lot of people are taking this class just because they have to and have no background information in classical music and aren't interested in this being their profession. Don't take this class if you think it will be an easy A or don't know/care much about classical music.
I thought this class was challenging. If you dont study or pay attention you are going to have a really difficult time. If you just take the time to review and go over the terms youll be fine. Most of the exams are just knowing the terms.
I took a half-semester course online and had a real easy time. The discussion questions are more on your opinion than they are on the material, so that's awesome. Her lecture notes are just enough; you really don't have to have the text. YouTube the listening examples, take notes on her notes, and you'll do great. Super easy.
Before this semester, I had to take this class and came here to review the only person that offers it (Jennifer Lau). Her ratings for the on-campus class are atrocious. I was nervous, so I took the online class instead. Turns out that was the right choice... I thought the class was interesting and fun - online. I scored a 97% for the semester.
Jennifer Lau has a tendency to speak rather quickly, which caused me to get lost during lecture sometimes. With her, be prepared to put some work into what might strike you as an easy A class. Read the book, and study when test time comes; cause that "second-half of the test essay" part will get you if you ain't prepared. She will help if you ask.
Really have to memorize everything she teaches you. She will tell you some of the information on the finals.
Dr. Lau is my favorite professor! She's always so cute in class, although she goes through important terms in class very quickly, but all you need to do is ask! She's very nice and helpful. Most of the test materials are in the book, so read it. She expects everyone to be responsible as an adult and prepared before class to understand what she says
I am accounting major and I found this class to be hard. If you need an elective or fine arts credit I suggest Intro to Architecture or anything other than this ridiculous class. The quizzes and discussion were all the class was graded on. You fail one quiz you are done for. 20 min for 15 questions, REALLY???
Dr. Lau is great! I went into music appreciation not knowing a lot about music and I learned a lot! Her lectures are interesting and she explains everything very well. Make sure to go to class because if not you will be lost. I would recommend taking notes from her slides. I would take her class again. I really enjoyed it.
Honestly, this class is one of the hardest classes I've taken. I took it for a fine art credit because the architecture course was full. If you aren't a music major, avoid this class. A lot of identifying western classical music and writing homework assignments. She is a very harsh grader and has high expectations for a beginner music class.
Do the short readings every night and show up to class. If you're looking for an easy A to fulfill a gen-ed requirement with a good-looking professor, then this is the place for you!
I took this class online and it was pretty straightforward and easy. Lau provided a lot of assistance, with lecture notes and study guides for each quiz. A lot of the quizzes were kind of difficult with the listening samples, due to the fact you have to remember so many songs and you have only 20 minutes per quiz, but not too difficult.
Incredibly unforgiving grader. Dosent seem to grasp that the majority of us take this class to fullfill requirements, not cause we have any interest pursueing music seriously.
I took this class in order to fulfill my Fine Arts Credit. This is one of those classes where you get what you put into it. She is a pretty good teacher, but sometimes talks a little fast. You will get use to it. For the test, just remember all the listening and the terms and you will do fine.
Listen to lectures
Her tests are really hard. You will have hard time passing the class even if you study. For the tests, you have to memorize a lot of musics and it's really hard to do because a lot of them are so alike. If you are planning on taking this class be prepared to work really hard. It's not an easy A class. You really need to work on it.
Dr. Lau is nice and is obviously passionate about her job, but her class is ridiculously hard. I only took Music appreciation to fulfill my requirements and I'm failing because the tests are extremely hard. I've talked to other people in mus139, with other professors and they don't do half as much as we do. Her class is unnecessarily difficult.
Dr. Lau makes her class WAY to hard. I swear I'm going to fail this useless class because she makes her exams really hard. You have to identify pieces of music by ear as well as remember information about that music. This class is not a requirement for my degree but I took it to fulfill my 15 credit hours thinking that it would be enjoyable.
She is really great. Makes her lectures really interesting, and is very engaging despite teaching to a large class. There is quite a bit of reading but if you stay on top of it and show up, it's relatively easy. She takes her class seriously.
She is an excellent teacher who knows what she is talking about. Some minor moments of miscommunication, but overall was enjoyable.
Hard grader, had a few issues with her during the semester. Enjoyed the class overall, but she is difficult to deal with at times. No mercy
Look, if you made it to college and can't even memorize a piece of music well enough to recognize it the next day, you need to seriously reevaluate your position in academia. There is no reason why you shouldn't have an A in this class.
Dr. Lau has a lot of expectations for this course, but gives a lot of time to do the homework. The quizzes can be difficult if you don't study the music, and if you aren't careful you'll miss something for an exit ticket. If you study the music in her reviews before a listening quiz, you'll do fine.
Dr. Lau is one of those professors that is well aware no one cares about her class. Everyone is there for the credits to fulfill their requirements so she very clearly makes it ridiculously hard. You have to put in a weekly 5-8 hours of studying for her pointless class because she makes her tests knowing most students fail to "stick it to them".
Dr. Lau definitely knows people take her class because of core requirements yet she still shows her passion for music. I found the class pretty easy-- writing assignments, follow discussion boards, and take the quizzes. The quizzes occasionally had some obscure questions on them but are still an easy A. The harder grader was her TA actually.
Dr. Lau was very clear with her online class and had very specific criteria. My TA however was a very hard grader and she like a lot of detail in every discussion post and writing assignment. Other than that this class is an easy A if you read and put in effort in the writing assignments.
This class is literally the most boring class you can take. She takes this class way too serious, considering people only take this class to fulfill requirements. It will literally make you fall asleep. Also she is terrible at giving lectures, she says um and uh over 200 times a class which makes it very hard to pay attention to the lectures.
You're better off taking Rock music appreciation, architecture, or ANYTHING else other than music appreciation. She takes this class way too seriously, as if everyone is in there to major in music. Tests are difficult, lecture is difficult, and she has two TAs watching behind your back the entire time. Don't take this class.
If you are needing to take a fine art class as a requirement... do NOT take music appreciation. Dr. Lau knows her stuff, but takes it wayyyy too seriously like all of her students plan on majoring in music. It is SO boring to the point that I dreaded going to class, but I had to cause every once and a while there was a pop quiz. Dont do it!!!!
The online version of this class was easy!
Difficult class, even if you know music. Should be called a music history class instead of appreciation. 3 essays, weekly quizzes. If you meet guidelines on essays you get 100%, not tough grading on that. Listening quizzes are difficult as she chooses pieces that sound very similar, even for musically trained ear. Too time consuming for a 100 lvl.
I took Dr. Lau's online class and it was good. Not too challenging and fairly interesting. The workload is reasonable each week.
Dr. Lau is very personable. Her lectures are very informational . Lastly, she is fair on grading.
This class was a lot of memorization. For someone who doesn't care much about the in depths of music, this class was horribly boring. The class was straightforward with no surprises. One quiz weekly and 3 papers that have you analyze music. Dr. Lau is extremely friendly.
Dr. Lau is such a kind professor. This semester, she removed due dates because of the pandemic. She checks in on her students often and makes sure that there is time for them to ask questions/get clarification. Her lectures can be boring, but she tries to make class engaging. If you put in a decent amount of effort, you'll pass with an A.
Professor Lau is incredibly sweet and I loved every minute of her class. Instead of due dates she has what she likes to call "best by dates", which means if you turn in your work by that date, that's great, but if not, you can always turn it in later for full credit so don't stress! If you love classical music, I highly recommend this class.
The class was a breeze. The grading on the quizzes, writing assignments, and discussion posts are straightforward and fair. Her notes are also concise and everything is laid out understandably. Just make sure listen and recognize the pieces and you'll be alright.
I liked this class a lot, it was interesting to learn the basics of western music and not hard or boring.
Dr. Lau is extremely conscious of how stressed students are and has made adjustments so her course is incredibly managable. The writing assignments were easy and as long as you studied, so were the weekly quizzes. I loved Dr. Lau's energy and it's clear to see that she's very passionate about music.
Very easy class, especially if you just need and Arts and Design General Ed credit. One weekly Quiz, one Discussion Post a week, and no final exam. She is not strict with late work, but its best to keep up with your work anyways.. it would be a lot of work to catch up on at the end.
Professor Lau is such a good professor! Her course was completely online, but she communicated everything thoroughly. She always provided good information about the material she taught, and the weekly quizzes + discussion post were fairly easy. Before this class, I knew nothing about music. I like how she structured the course for beginners!
Honestly, I did not put a lot of effort into this class, so my grade reflects my effort. It is very easy to get an A in this class. There are a lot of lectures that you should read to understand what is going on, if you don't, you'll be fine. She does take a while to respond back to emails.3 writing assignment, discussion, and quizzes.
Dr. Lau is a very kind professor and her course was well-structured and interesting.
