She's going too fast. She doesn't write anything on the board, just slide show(not posted on a website). Very ubhelpful in a way.
She's just a graduate student who used to be a T.A.She's inexperienced. If you are in her class, drop it soon before you get an undesirable mark + then it will be hard to get it removed from your transcript!Better to be safe now than sorry later+too late!
Lectures are interseting, and you can tell that she really wants students to like the topic. Why would someone drop just because she's a grad student? That's ridiculous!
Don't know what these other people are talking about. I think she is totally fantastic! Her lectures are very clear with lots of fun discussions. Very helpful...great prof!
she goes way too fast...students are constantly asking her to repeat things. At times she can be confusing and unclear. DOn't like the fact that the course is based on two exams worth 50% eaach.
She's very enthusiastic about the topic and knowledgeable!! To be helpful, she holds discussions with the students at the end of class, making sure to answer all questions. I find the powerpoint slides very helpful in summarizing the main points.
shes WAY 2 fast when speaking!!..when copying the powerpoint she gives new info so its hard 2 keep ^..powerpoint v.simple, may include terms but doesnt include explanation..u have 2 write quickly in order 2 get everything that she says down
The tests are challanging, but the material is straight out of the text, pay close attention to details. If you really concentrate on the text you will do fine. Great prof! The multiple choice in literally word for word out of the text. Take the class.
Great prof, really tries hard to help. Lectures are easy to listen to.
very good
I have Jen as a TA for personality. She is by the far the most helpful TA I've ever encountered. Made available sample mulitple choice questions (the text didn't come with a study guide). She can be clear, direct and to the point in terms of the material and how to study it. I didn't know she was an actual instructor, I would take a class with her.
excellent TA especially for stats.. made everything so clear
If you are taking stats you should definately take it with Dr. Check and Jenny Lewin. Do your homework and listen, you'll be ok. Jenny is a very good teacher.
As a professor, she's tough. Maybe it's because she's new to professorship, but it's as if she expects us to be at the same level as her. Her lectures/exams are normal. Her assignments are hell when she's marking. She nitpicks. Beware if there's a substantial percentage going into assignments. I wouldn't risk taking a 4th year seminar with her.
She might be a little tough when she is marking assignments, but she is great as a teacher. I would recommend anyone to take any course with her.
Ms. Lewin cares about her profession and her students! Wonderful teacher, inspiring, has as good sense of humour, she's not easy but she expects students to participate which is easy if you do the readings. I loved her and this class experience! Thanks JL!
I took the abnormal psych correspondence course in the summer. Exam questions based on the textbook but you really need to read it thoroughly. The position paper was also easy. She always replies to student's questions on moodle. Amazing prof. Absolutely loved her. Study and you can't go wrong. Got an A+ in the course. :))))
Amazing Prof! Cared about her students. Went out of her way to help me out (broke my foot and couldn't get to York). She made York worth it. Only prof there to do that.
She was the best professor I had at York. Most professors I have had did not care about the students but she was quite the opposite. She was interesting to listen to and she would do whatever she could to make sure everyone did well. Be prepared to participate a lot! but the participation made it all the more interesting!
Great prof! Best course in all four years at York. Makes class interesting, be prepared to be involved in discussions and exercises, be thourough on assignments - and you will do fine and have fun in her class!
Her lectures are a little boring, she's fresh out of graduate school, so it's fair to say she hasn't had any time to build insight in the field (in terms of experiences). She repeats most of what's in the textbook (which should be your bible for the course!!). She's really nice but pretty dry lecture. Interesting course overall in terms of content.
Do Not Take her class, All of her multiple question ends with All of the above or two of the above option, In my opinion thats the meanest thing a proff could do, A lot of reading too from textbook and she choose to ask about stats (prevalence), dates, overall really hard and tricky
Took abnormal online with her. There's no lecture component so you literally read the book and write tests. The tests are pretty easy, they're exactly like the online practice questions. It's still a lot of reading though, and you have to pretty much know everything. Easy A+ if you memorize the book
Dr. Lewin is an amazing prof! She's made understanding clinical psychology skills clear and fun. She goes above and beyond the call of duty to help her students. She's very friendly and has a good sense of humour.
I have never used this website before but she deserves a rating!! She is an incredible professor and person. Her classes and discussions are so interesting that at the end of a 7-10pm class people refused to leave until 10:30! She is knowledgable, enthusiastic and an all around great prof!
I took Social Psyc online with her and I was extremely impressed. She is super clear with explaining lecture concepts and very helpful with clarifying them through email and messages online. Class discussions were very useful. Exams were mostly textbook based, so study the material thoroughly if you want an A. Overall an excellent prof!
Dr. Jennifer Lewin is a very warm, friendly, and helpful individual and professor! I greatly enjoyed her course! The skills and techniques taught are very helpful for my future career! Thank you, Dr. Lewin!
Great professor, very nice and approachable. but VERY CHALLENGING CLASS!! asks many details from the textbook, making the multiple choice excruciatingly hard
I LOVE Dr. Lewin! She is one of the best profs at York and anyone would be lucky to have her. Amazing lectures (make sure to fill in the blanks). Exams are very fair - slightly tough multiple choice, but A and A+ is doable if you study thoroughly. Very interesting course.
Breakdown: 3 exams (25%, 25%, 30%), tutorial attendance (5%), tutorial assignment (15%) Exams are on both lectures and the text; mostly the latter. You HAVE to read the textbook and keeping on track is important because you do not want to be last minute running through the 5-6 chapters before an exam. Assignment is diagnosing a case study.
Easy A without attending lectures, Easy A+ if you do attend lectures. About 8-10 questions from lecture, rest from text book. Attendance helps with getting those 8-10 questions, plus tutorial attendance gets you free 5%! Perfect class for those who want to boost their GPA.
Such an amazing professor; hands down, the best one I've had. Very passionate, approachable, and fair. She is not an easy marker, but if you do the readings, participate and pay attention in class, you have no reason to worry. I'd recommend her to anyone (even non-psych majors).
My absolute favourite Prof. at York to date. Prof. Lewin was very clear, helpful, and approachable. She was also very organized and clear on her expectations which I really appreciated. Put in the work and you will get an A or A+ for sure.
wonderful prof. Her assignment and short answer expectations are a little hard to please but the course material, her method of teaching and the discussion tutorials were very nice. Friendly and very approachable, exams were fair but content wasn't the easiest to grasp.
Dr. Lewin is a great prof, her lectures are clear, concise and she knows how to keep the class engaged. She shows a lot of videos and tries to do interactive activities. The tests are fair (you have to read the textbook). The layout of the course was perfect (3 tests-noncumulative and an assignment).
very interesting lectures, connects course information with pop-culture. tests are hard but if you study hard and read all the chapters you can do great. 1 case study to diagnose mental disorders worth 20% hard but fun and rewarding. would recommend this class and professor to anyone.
Dr. Lewin is an amazing professor. She delivers engaging lectures and takes plenty of questions. The course was organized and flowed well. Her humor and contemporary references helped the lectures enjoyable. Would recommend for non-majors. Word of caution, keep up with the readings. Exams are heavily weighted towards the textbook.
Dr. Lewin was absolutely fantastic. I'm not one who usually enjoys 3 hour lectures, let alone in the middle of summer (who does). Although the content of her course was interesting anyway, she made it even more interesting. She is engaging in class, effortlessly convincing people to participate. She provides clear info about content of evaluations
Amazing professor! I'd say one of the best so if you plan on taking abnormal... PICK JENNIFER LEWIN. Not gonna lie, the readings are a little on the heavy side, but if you study hard it'll pay off I promise. Her tests are fair. 3 tests and a fun case study.
Very approachable and lectures are interesting, clear and engaging. Tests are not easy, but as long as you attend lectures and read TB, you will definitely do good.
I loved Prof Lewin's class! Im sad it was not a full year course. The topics were very interesting, even the dry parts about medications and neural activity. She has great personal stories to tell that relate to the field, always gives a review for every test (what not to study), and is always willing to help! She's an inspiration to me!
Really great lecturer. Difficult tests. Make sure you know that textbook inside out!
A great, well-respected professor. She's very knowledgeable and open to receiving questions or feedback. Her tests are somewhat difficult but not so bad if you read the book well and really familiarize yourself with types of disorders and treatment plans.
She is a very good prof, and she discusses the material in an engaging matter in class. The tests are a bit difficult, but manageable if you complete textbook readings, and attend class.
the lectures are informative but majority of her notes come from the textbook, tests are based mostly on the testbook, with a few questions from her slides
Good professor, covered the textbook which was helpful since the tests are based on the textbook. Overall she's very nice and helpful but u have to STUDY for the tests
Amazing professor, she is really nice and approachable, tests are not difficult at all if you know the concepts, she is one of my favourite professors at york, the only reason that i got an A and not A+ is because of my TA which marked my short answer part of my tests unfairly.
Really good at lectures, I listened to her 3 hours a week and did not fall asleep once. You could probably skip class and just read the textbook but there are always a few questions about things discussed in class. Her tests were fair, she has questions that try to trick you. I did her assignment in 2 nights and got an A.
Top-notch professor. Extremely clear about material covered in the tests. Interesting and engaging topics. I LOVE Dr. Lewin! She's AMAZING.
The professors went on strike against the school and while other professors decided to continue classes for the sake of their students who are trying to graduate, she decided to suspend her classes. She wont hold classes, she said shes not answering emails , or grading the exam we took BEFORE the strike. Im an international student...
Dr. Lewin truly cares about her students! She answers emails quickly and in such depth. Despite the strike, she was super accommodating! Tests require studying both the textbook and lessons so pay attention in class and you'll be fine!
Good lectures and very approachable. Tests are difficult but if you go to lectures and read the textbook it will be fine. She gives info about what you need to study for the test and what you don't. There were 3 in-class assignments that we had to complete in groups which were easy marks.
Dr . Lewin is awesome
This is the best professor I have come across at York. She is caring, patience, engaging, clear on her lecture contents and test materials. By far the most enjoyable course I have taken even though it was a summer course and tough to finish in 6 weeks. I felt I have learned the material quite well by the end of it.
The textbook and her lectures, both, are very dull and repetitive. Tried every way possible to study for the tests but my grade through the course stayed constant.
My god this course was just crazy in content. As a prof she is great but too much lecture material plus you get tested on each term in the textbook too. Her MC are tricky at times so be careful to read properly. Not the best GPA booster tbh.
Lewin is a good lecturer, I just wish her tests weren't so hard. Meaning, the level of detail that you have to know for the test is a lot. If you are taking this course STUDY and KNOW the textbook!!!
Dr. Lewin is a caring and compassionate therapist who demonstrates this in her lectures and the real world information she shares in class. She is patient and kind to explain the materials. I had an in-lecture and the interaction/discussions with her in class with her students is amazing. I'm taking Counseling Psychology with her again!
She is a solid choice for abnormal but there is a lot of reading required for the course. Tests were easy if you read everything and studied off the textbook. Her in class assignments are mark boosters and her lectures correlate with the textbook readings.
Many students felt that the main problem was that the exam was too hard to finish in the time given.
I had Dr. Lewin for an online seminar 4th-year course. I thoroughly enjoyed her passion and knowledge of the subject. She's an amazing caring prof who gave us extra time to complete our assignments when we asked. She sounds like an amazing therapist that some students were asking about being her client after the course. She's a real Gem!
She takes all of the class time to teach. Yet the class is 20% of the exam. 80% comes from the book. You should also watch many videos from 2 to 45 mins from youtube and they will be asked from. So time is an issue. She also gives you 3 projects for which you don't have the tools. BTW, She is nice and knowledgable as a psychologist.
She is a B tier prof, not above and beyond but does the bare minimum you'd expect. She cares that you understand. There are 3 big tests with 100 multiple choice and 1 short answer. You will need to read the textbook, the summary pages won't be enough. Her lectures go over the book but also add more info you will be tested on too. You'll be alright
Took 3255 Reasoning and Decision-Making with her and TA Adam. The material was fairly interesting and she does a fair job of covering it thoroughly in her lectures. The final exam was heavily weighted (40%) and perhaps could have been more evenly distributed.
Dr. Lewin was great. Very kind, helpful, and accessible outside of class. She made a really nice learning environment, even though we were online. I would take a class with her again for sure!
The examinations are very text-book based if you do not read the textbook AND memorize the definitions and concepts, you will not receive a high grade. She gives 10 min breaks in 3 hour lectures even though the exams are textbook based. Professor Lewin is monotone, uses the words um and so very frequently in lectures it becomes annoying.
Dr. Lewin is AMAZING! She is so passionate about teaching + puts real effort so the class understands and will not get bothered by your questions; she encourages everyone to engage in class. She is genuine, so humble, accommodating, caring, kind, +also very professional. A REAL GEM. I am so happy to have taken her courses. Thank you Dr. Lewin!
She is a decent, knowledgable prof, a very tough marker. I lost marks in participation because I was late two times. responsive but the rubric is subjective and vague. Attendance is very important, the group presentation rubric is heavily based on how well the group presents not on individual basis. be careful who is in your group presentation.
Dr. Lewin is an angel. Her lectures feel like a Ted Talk. They are super interesting and interactive with lots of valuable insight and information. She goes above and beyond to accommodate students by offering make-up exams and gives out a clear instruction for exams. Don't get me started on her outfits. She is a #Harvard worthy prof.
Never mind learning about all the different kinds of disorders this class gave me all the different kinds of disorders. You might as well memorize the whole textbook if you want a decent mark. One of the TA's was a hard marker and mislead my group with our assignment. Good luck kids.
Amazing professor. I'd leave her morning lecture full of energy. She makes counseling easy to understand and interesting. Read the textbook and take notes in her class for exam prep and she likes active participation in the lecture. Grading: in-person midterm 28%, paper 28%, take-home exam 30%, participation 10%, and in-lecture activities 4%.
I'm not a PSYC major but I loved PSYC3140 because of her. I took her class in the last minute, I needed extra credit but she made it so interactive and interesting. Just attend the lectures, take notes and follow the study tips she posts.
Super honest and kind! Engaging lectures!
I loved being in Professor Lewin's class. She cares about her students and is overall a sweetheart. Her tests are a bit difficult, but she is more than willing to help if needed and responds quickly to emails. The content is very interesting, but heavy so it's good to stay on top of things.
Not bad, but not an amazing professor. Had to take her class because the other ones were full. Get ready for pop quizzes every week, vague lectures on difficult topics and hard assignments/tests. Try to get into another class if you can, but if you are stuck with her, get ready to work really hard for a little or barely satisfactory reward.
This was by far one of the worst classes I've taken to date. The lectures were draining she basically just read off of the slides. The exams are ABSURD, the questions are insanely hard and you'd have to do exam prep like a month before to do well. I was so excited for this class but after going through it I was thoroughly disappointed.
Gotta love paying for a course in which you need to buy a textbook and teach YOURSELF the concepts. what's the point of lectures then? get ready to read over 100 pages, make notes and memorize. oh and makesure you study her lecture slides ON TOP of everything else and those videos. only three midterms 30% 30% 40% - don't mess up one or good bye GPA
Professor Lewin is very knowledgable and kind! You can tell she's really passionate about her job and loves the topic. Her tests are textbook heavy and mildly difficult but getting an A is definitely attainable if you study and keep with the content. She's definitely one of my favourite professors and would def take another class with her
She is one of those profs that reads off the lecture slides. So if you commute, get ready to have your time completely wasted by showing up to lecture. Also her lecture does not connect to textbook material, sometimes it does but most times it is extra information on top over the 100 page chapters you have to read.
How does she expect students to retain info from 4 chapters for a single test of about 100 pgs each! That's about 400 pgs worth of information if you round up. My notes pages for each CH came up to be about 27-30 pgs just for notes. She EASILY could have broken it up in a better way.. So if you screw up on one test which is worth 40% you're done.
She's a good lecturer and all, her MC tho can be a bit brutal. Her class is entirely midterms, which I don't mind. However, her tests do get progressively harder (but somehow class average improves? lol).
As others have mentioned, the multiple-choice questions were quite challenging, though the short answers weren't as difficult. Her tests are heavily textbook-based, often focusing on the most detailed information. However, she is an excellent lecturer who doesn't rely on reading off slides and provides plenty of explanations and examples.
This was one of the best courses I have taken in uni. Her lectures are very interesting, and she gives them with the influence of her experience working in the field as a clinical psychologist. She is kind and accommodating. I recommend taking her if you enjoy reading textbooks and learning about all the details of mental disorders.
Dr.Lewin brings a sense of knowledge and experience that she relates to her lectures. She explains disorders in a realistic way that is relatable, answers questions thoroughly, goes into great discussion to help students talk through situations and allows for openness.
Dr. Lewin is one of the best university professors I have ever had. Not only is she extremely knowledgeable, but she also truly cares about our students and their learning experience. She is a fair grader, but expect to work hard. If you love learning, this is the professor for you.
No feedback was provided on assignments and projects. Marks were assigned after the final exam, except for the first exam grade. Never received detailed feedback. She requires you to work brutally hard for decent grades, especially if you are exposed to some of the material for the first time. Participation mark was assigned somewhat unfairly.
Prof's lectures are pretty good. Tests are mainly based on textbook with a small portion from the lectures. All tests were multiple choice but a perfect score is pretty hard. Get ready to read a lot.
Professor Lewin was great! A lot of reviews say the tests were brutal but I have definitely had worse. It's just a lot of material to memorize, majority from the textbook. A small portion of test questions come from the lecture which were recorded and pretty interesting as well!! One of the better PSYC courses at the 3000 level.
She gave amazing lectures. The first and third tests were easy and she gave us 6 bonus points on the first test. However, they only had written responses with no MC where she only gave us an hour to complete them which is unfair because that isn't enough time. We couldn't go back and forth. The second test was a bit hard and they marked hard on it.
Great at explaining complex course material and is an enganging lecturer.
3-hour lectures feel like 5 minutes! Dr. Lewin knows her stuff! She frequently gives examples from her line of work, is engaging with students, answers to the best of her understanding and is very easy to approach. I found some of the MCQs tough; most are from the textbook, but she gives a breakdown on how many are within the study guide. :)
Professor Lewin is a great Professor, her lectures can be long, however they are interesting and keeps you entertained with the knowledge, examples and opportunities of participation she incorporates into class. She is very patient, and stays back just to answer questions of students. Pay attention to details a bit when it comes to her tests.
Harvey Dent irl
She is an extremely harsh grader. The content is easy to follow but exams are weighted excessively (nearly 40%) and marked critically. In-class assignments offer little grade boost, despite good teaching the grading makes the course unnecessarily difficult. Not recommended, especially if you need a reference letter (she says she won't give one).
she does entirely way too much lol this class was the hardest one I had this semester and it nearly took me out n the most annoying part is that this class really had the potential to be a grade boosting class cuz of how easy the content was to follow through but the marking along with the exam format (MC, SA, LA) n weighing messed up everything fr
took this course for counselling skills and knowledge but it ended up giving me the worst case of depression in return. her class and the way the exams and assignments are structured and weighed are INSANE like 39 and 40% for the exams weighing? if you value your peace and sanity pls don't take her for this course i wish we had the year long course
DONT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HER IT WILL DAMN NEAR RUIN UR GPA ESPECIALLY FOR FINAL YEAR😭
despite me ending up with a pretty good grade I still wouldn't take her for next sem due to how stressful tis course ended up being for me
Amazing lecturer, but the course is almost entirely tests (two 40% exams and one 20%), and they're very tough, often requiring big curves. If you're not strong at exams, I wouldn't recommend it, or if you dont like a lot of readings. Expect heavy textbook-based memorization. She could also be a model ngl.
