She is AWESOME! If you have a chance to take her class, DO IT!
Her gender class was the most fun I've ever had at Western. Very friendly Prof.
She is pretty smurfy
Let me put it this way, she's the reason I chose Sociology as my major - she's totally funny, nice, knowledgeable, AND gives entertaining lectures. It's a total package! Take a class with her if you get a chance!!
Great class, great professor!
Great Teacher, really makes the class fun and interesting for everyone.
Made me like sociology
great prof, fun class
She is very engaging and keeps you interested
While this is not the funnest class in the world, she really gets into it and really helps you to learn it. She is so enthusiastic about everything. She is tough on grading and you really have to work to get a good grade, but she's awesome.
by far my most favorite prof. i actually found myself WANTING to go to class. she is also the reason i chose sociology as my major. i will attempt to take every class i can from her.
She is a great professor, and very entertaining and hilarious too! The time went by very fast in class and I was never bored. Tests are pretty easy if you do the work.
fun class, she is entertaining, gotta do the reading and go to every class
j lo is an awesome prof, fun and smart. the class is interesting and worth taking, but dont try to leave in the middle of class unless you like to be the center of attention.
feminist. hates boys. funny at times but tries really hard. several novels to read but no textbook. 1-2 questions per chapter per novel on test. multiple choice. good comparative gender GUR
Very clear on expectations, do the reading and go to class and you'll get a decent grade. Classes were, funny, interesting and informative. she was a big influence in my decision to minor in sociology. I want to take as many of her classes as possible.
Great Prof. I loved her class and she is funny but serious at the same time. You get to read a book with interesting studies and not a boring text book. Great class and Prof. Loved it.
She is my favorite professor here so far. Made it SO MUCH FUN to be in her class. Looks kind of like Alanis Morrisette. Great class, GREAT prof. I will definately try to take more of her classes.
Jen is by far the best professor that I've had here at Western. Everyone should take at least one of her classes, even if they don't have an interest in Sociology-- Im sure by the end of the course you will!
jen is amazing! why can't every prof. be like her? very clear, very enthusiastic, very interesting. full of energy. the class topics are interesting anyway, but jen takes it to another level. don't go four years without taking a class from her!
I really like the class. The lectures were about 80% of the tests, and reading material was about 20%. Overall, she's a very fair grader. She's very enthusiastic, helpful and nice. I definately reccommend the class.
The most wonderful prof I have had so far. Very clear in lectures and in her requirements. Funny and nice. Great class, learned a lot from it.
Jen Lois is so damn hip that I bet she reads these and has a facebook.com profile and a livejournal. One of the best all-around teachers at Western, period.

This is one class that I definately enjoyed going to each day. Jen is so funny and gives great examples. The books are interesting and easy reads. I would love to take another class from her and if you haven't yet you definately should! -Only one neg. thing is that she is pretty feminist but oh well
She is a great person and teacher! I absolutely loved her class, the information was great and she made me want to go to class. I don't agree with the previous writer that a negative thing about her was that she's a feminist...that's a good thing! She shows what feminists can be: smart, funny, relatable, and shares important issues with students.
Awesome class! She was so much fun to listen to and really has a passion for the subject.
She is by far my favorite professor at Western so far. I definitely reccomend her to everyone I know. Her lectures are very informative as well as very entertaining! Just be sure to do the readings!
Her classes are so much fun! She's hilarious and easy to understand, yet challenging. I took as many courses as I could from her.
Awesome. Take her, trust me.
This woman makes college fun. I can't believe I woke up for this 8am class!!! Jen knows her stuff and makes her lectures fly by.

she rocks! she made an 8:30 am class not so bad, I loved her and she made me take more interest in sociology classes. shes very inspirational
Gender and Society is a very interesting class. This woman inspired me to be a soc major! The tests are only hard if you don't go to every class and read the books (but they are interesting). She is a little on the feminist side, but fun. Make sure to take good notes- she will outline what will be on the test clearly in her notes. Great class!
One of the best at WWU. You need to take a class from Jen. And she's HOT

Jen is one of the best teachers I have taken in four years of college classes. She tends to be challenging, but at the same time fun to take, and interesting to learn from which makes the learning fun! I would recommend her to anyone wanting to take beginning sociology classes, or even advanced.
Jen Lois is hilarious! she's constantly making the class laugh with her stories and jokes. I have no problem getting up for this 8:30 class. The tests are all multiple choice and as long as you do the reading and go to class, you'll get at least a B. The subject is very interesting and I would recommend this class to anyone interested in sociology!
best class i've taken @WWU.she's inspired me to become a soc major.class is well laid out, notes are easy to follow & gives examples that students relate to (loves seinfeld).tests aren't too hard but DO study & take her practice tests, their basically what she will test on. expect to read 1 chapter before every class, but the books are interesting.
JLo rocks my world! One of the best profs I've had, maks you want to attend class. She's really funny and interesting. Take a class w/ here ASAP. It's true guys...she is kinda hot.
I love this class--although you do need to go to the class to do well on the tests--but who cares here classes are great--i looked forward to going to this class every time I had it.
Great class i would say it would be great for anyone to take it even if the GUR is filled. She is an amazing prof
What is there to say? Jen is AWESOME. Whatever you do, TAKE HER. You won't regret it.
Jen is GREAT. I took her gender class at the same time as taking Collamer's gender course, and the contrast was amazing...Jen makes her classes very interesting, is very helpful and nice. Take good notes and know the general point of the readings and you'll do well in the class too.
if you're going to take any SOC class, take it w/Jen if possible. makes the material very interesting & prevalent, her class mirrors a seinfeld act. be sure to read & go to class, its not hard & won't take more than 1 hour of reading/night but the tests are pretty specific. just know the cases in the books & themes in class, you'll do just fine
Hands down, Jen is the best teacher I have had at Western. She inspired me to be a soc major! I won't say her classes are easy, but she makes class fun and interesting. I have taken four classes from her and I have loved every one because she is very entertaining!
Nice comeback after a quarter gone! The class was interesting but not as good as her gender class. most of the readings are boring (some good ones), lectures are OK but you won't be raving about them fo your friends. likes to interact w/students, writes fair tests & puts out practice tests too. take her if you get the chance!
LOVE THE TEACHER. LOVE THE CLASS. It was intensely interesting, and you can tell she's really into the material! Kinda reminds me of Jeaneane Garafalo, too. As long as you do the reading (GREAT BOOK!) and go over the notes once or twice, you'll get a great grade. Plus, she puts practice questions (20!) on Blackboard, and they definitely help!
I attended WWU and transferred but wanted to comment that if you get the chance take her class. You will not find many teachers that make Sociology so relevant, interesting, and fun. I aced my Soc class at this University because I remembered so much information that I took with her my freshman year (4 years ago). She is approachable and helpful!
This is an awesome class and a great prof. She is really funny and helpful.
Very detailed lectures with interesting anecdotes.
This was a great class! She is a great professor and her lectures are clear, organized, and very funny. Her tests are easy as long as you look over the notes and a lot of the material on the test is common sense. This is one of the few classes that actually has information relevant to life!
So freakin' awesome... Jen is so very enthusiastic about what she does... plus she shot off my potato gun at boullivard park!
Shes got to be the best teacher to teach anything when studying gender and society. Funny and always full of energy. Anyone should take advantage and take this class. 3 test all tru or false and multiple choice. Easy class to miss if you take it early in the day. Make sure you read!
OH MY GOD! I LOVE THIS PROF! She is HILARIOUS!!!! I swear, everyday she says something increadibly funny! Only 3 multiple choice tests, and she even offers an extra credit assignment! The class is really fun, but you really really have to read!
Jen is very lively & her enthusiasm is great to have in lecture, most of the topics she talks about require a little humor anyways. exams are moderately difficult, questions come from lecture notes, readings, & videos. but some questions are really tricky which is what makes the exams difficult. she is very helpful & easy to approach/talk to.
Best prof i've had at western. i had this class at 830am and would have never survived if it weren't for her hilarious comments and interesting videos. if you take notes on her slides and know them like the back of your hand you'll get an A on the 3 multiple choice tests. reading the books help also. i highly, highly recommend her!!
Great professor! 8:30 AM class and it was the one I looked forward to the most! Very entertaining and passionate about sociology! Take her!
Jen has been my favorite teacher so far at Western. Her lectures are so interesting and I'm always at the edge of my seat in the first row! I'm not a morning person at all, but going to this class at 8:30 Am was easy to do. The tests are fair, but you do have to study. And you do have to read the textbook, but the reading is really interesting.
Truly a great professor. And deviance is SO interesting. One of the best classes I've taken at WWU.
Awkward but charismatic (kidding). I used to not be able to get up for an 8:30am class. But I went every day for this class.
My goodness! I LOVE Jen Lois! If I were straight, and she weren't married with children and 15 years my senior, I would definitely want to marry her. She teaches so brilliantly. She holds the class's attention at 8:30am like she's using some sort of tricky magic... Hilarious, knowledgeable, incredibly interesting subject... TAKE IT!
I loved this class! Completely worth going at 8:30 in the morning. Her lectures are really well paced plus she tells a lot of hilarious stories. There are 3 tests which are not difficult if you've done the readings and gone to class. Even if you don't need it as a GUR, I suggest taking it.
Best professor of my entire college career and this class was AMAZING. I was really dreading the capstone, but Jen made everything interesting, engaging, worthwhile and clear. I wanted to go to class every day, I was excited about everyone's project and mine too. I have never had a more incredible scholastic experience.
Great Professor! Lectures were very clear, funny and engaging. Must read books but they are easy to read. Overall 2 thumbs up!
Fun, enthusiastic (and she's been doing this a while!), and entertaining, this has been my favorite class in all my years of schooling. It started at 8:30am, and I missed only one day of class, which was accidental and I regretted it. She fuses the subject matter with her unique brand of humor for a truly enlightening experience.
Amazing teacher, I went to this class expecting to hear how awful men were to women, which I did end up hearing... but turns out men are quite awful to women and with her revised definition of a feminist, I will call myself one! Not quite so boldly in public mind you... I fall victim to the stigma you'll learn about late in the quarter. Great Class
Jen is a great professor and is very funny. She keeps the lectures interesting so you don't fall asleep in an 830am class. She is also very available outside of class and encourages students to come to her office for extra help if needbe. I would definitely recommend her!
She is AWESOME and hilarious! I loved going to class for the first time! Her analogies and real-life examples make the class easy to follow and very interesting. Definitely take Soc of Deviant Behavior!
Jen is an AMAZING Prof. She's funny, she tells stories relating to the material. No real homework, just reading. She tests you three times during the quarter through multiple choice exams. She's very amiable too!
Everyone should take this class and should take it from her. You learn so much (with out even trying) and she is super funny and easy to relate to. You read a couple interesting books, but if you REALLY didn't want to you could get by on the tests by guessing on those few questions. TAKE THIS.
Jen has a great sense of humor and has tons of examples to back up what she teaches. Her class has really opened my eyes and I would totally take another class from her...despite the fact that I'm a business major and really have no need to. The books are great too and her tests are super easy!! I've gotten high A's on both of them so far
This class was so great and interesting. The tests weren't tricky. Oh and I want to be Jen Lois when I grow up. Love her!
AMAZINNG! 28% of class got A's, 48% got B's.. It was a REALLLY easy class if you showed up to lecture, took notes, and read the chapters. Plus, she makes it worth your time to go to class. I don't think I've ever laughed so hard!
She is great! You need to study, but she makes the material fun to examine. I found that sometimes she was a little disorganized, but it really just ads to the fun of the class. Cool info, and decent tests. Even if you don't have an interest in Soc, take this class. It is awesome.
Best Prof EVER!! I will take every class I can from her. If you attend class and keep up with reading you don't have to study, just a quick glance back over your notes! She is totally hilarious and will actually make you want to come to class!!
Amazing! This class is so much fun and you learn so much. Jen is hilarious and well organized. Tests are easy. There are 3 books but the reading is very easy and interesting. I wish everyone had to take this class because the topic applies to everyone and you look at everything from a new perspective! Take this class you will not regret it at all!
This professor isn't nearly as good as people are saying. If you're not that smart and don't see through her lack of understanding, then I guess it's fine. I got sick of the contradictions, and meaningless scantron tests. The worst part is the teacher herself, she's nice, funny, but really lacks depth.
"Society and Gender" should be titled "Male Shaming 101". Prof cares far more about spreading her opinions than making any effort of understanding how the world works. Nod your head and smile, regurgitate her opinions on the Scantron, and you will get an A. Just don't expect to learn anything.
REALLY cool class, and Jen is super funny so she makes class fun. Test format is scantron and it's pretty easy. Readings are required but they're all pretty interesting after the first week. Learn about specific examples of deviant identities/groups. Prof is fun but a little disorganized at times, but it's not disruptive. I would def recommend!
Jen is the best! Class is early, and mandatory since she doesn't put her notes online. She relates the concepts to everyday situations, making them easy and fun to learn. She could also be a comedian. Tests are somewhat difficult, just do go to class and do the readings and study a little. HIGHLY recommend taking a class with her!
Loved Jen, she was definitely into soc and was really good at making the 8:30 class entertaining. It was more relaxing and fun to attend, I definitely looked forward to it. She sometimes changes her definitions of certain concepts after explaining them, but other than that, the class went great. I'd definitely recommend!
Jen was what got me up for her 8:30 class! She's spunky, really great at explaining things, and has fun doing it. Her tests are easy if you go to the lectures and do the reading. However, she will not give you the power points if you miss class so you would have to get lecture notes from a friend.
Jen is (so far) my favorite prof at WWU. If you think that this was a "male shaming" class, then take a step back and gain some perspective. This class changed my outlook on everyday life; it was so interesting! Attendance is mandatory cause she doesn't post anything online, but she's hilarious so it is worth going. Tests are mediocre, just study.
Lois is awesome, the tests are kind of tricky, so make sure you study. You can miss a couple of classes, but don't go making a habit out of it or you will miss out on important class information. Such an interesting class, definitely take this class!
She's super interesting. There's never a dull moment.
I loved Jen!She was always excited to teach, and there was never a dull moment, always interesting! She was the main reason I didn't have a problem getting up for this class at 8:30. She tells it like it is, and has fun doing so! Definitely recommend her and this class. Not too difficult either!
TAKE THIS CLASS. She is an AMAZING prof, and her classes are really interesting/funny (I'm saying this after taking an 8:30am class). The texts are super interesting also. If you spend a little time, you'll probably find it interesting - which makes studying a breeze. Tests are multiple choice and fair (no sneaky questions - just honest testing)
The teacher is great, but the class kind of sucks. Her feminism comes out often and almost comes across as her getting defensive about certain things. She seems to express her opinions on the content too much which makes learning the important things tough. But she is very funny, and her 251 deviance class rocks. Take her DEVIANCE class, NOT gender
SOC 268 has honestly been one of my favorite classes at WWU. Jen is really funny and makes gender and society fascinating and easy to learn. I looked forward to going to it every day (and this was at 8:30am) Jen even assigned interesting books to read as opposed to a boring text book. Take this class and you'll get a good grade AND have a good time
really hard class to take if you're a guy. the class mostly deals with how women are disadvantaged in society today. you have to read 2 books about womens inequality and only one book about boys. i came in very interested and left her class tired of the constant blame she kept putting on men in today's society. wouldn't take this class again.
I really enjoyed this class. Going to class at 8:30am was tough but the lectures were all really interesting. I couldn't stop talking about what we were learning. Unfortunately the exams were pretty tough for me and I didn't get as good as a grade as I wanted but I still loved the class. Make sure you go to lectures!!
AWESOME teacher! Love Jen! She constantly has you laughing while at the same time learning. Read the books and attend class or else you will probably fail. If you do that and pay attention then its not hard to get good grades. I strongly recommend taking one of her classes!
Jenn is a very interesting teacher. She spices up her lectures with personal stories which keeps them interesting. Her grading however is strict. 3 exams constitute the entire grade. If you're interested in Sociology, take her class if you can
Actually the best. I took two of her soc classes because she's so energetic and funny. Makes waking up for an 8:30am class doable!
I highly recommend this class, whether you are interested in Soc or need your BCGM. Jen is awesome and funny, the tests aren't difficult (just study and do the readings-they are novels though) and you'll be fine. The course material is interesting and relevant to life. I don't even mind that its at 8:30!
Such an interesting class and Jen is hilarious. Even at 8:30 in the morning I was happy to be there and cracking up. The material is really easy to get into as well. Highly recommend this class!
I absolutely LOVED this class. Easily the best class I've taken at Western. She is hilarious and the material is interesting. The tests are straight forward about what you need to know. If you can get into it, you will not be disappointed.
This was without a doubt my favorite class at WWU so far. Jen is so much fun and I learned so much and never got bored. I never wanted to skip class and couldn't stop talking about the things we were learning. I think everyone should take this class.
Jen is an excellent professor! She is passionate about what she teaches. No textbook. There were three books written by qualitative researchers that we had to read, but they were all very interesting. I highly recommend taking this class, it was never boring! She has a great sense of humor!
Jen is an awesome prof! Her class is clear and well organized. Lectures are mandatory- she does not post her notes online, so you must attend class. She can keep the attention of 150 students and keep them awake for an 830 class. Class MWF- assigned about 20 pages of reading between each class. do readings and take good notes and should get an A
Jen is a great professor! The class is interesting. The only homework is reading. Your grade consists of 3 scantron texts. They are easy if you read the text and go to lecture everyday. Lectures are at a good pace, easy to follow and take notes. I would definitely recommend her as a professor and I would recommend this class!
I really loved her teaching style. As long as you take good notes and read the material you'll do fine.
class was entertaining, as everyone said. notes were clear and concise. tests, however, were not. the test questions were quite vague and therefore more challenging to get through imo. grades suffered because of this. recommend for the entertainment, not for the tests.
This is a great class to be introduced into the Sociology department. The textbook was more of an assembly of academic papers that required you to pay attention. This is a great class and its worth taking it regardless of your interests.
I sincerely think Jen's class should be mandatory for all students, just like math and science. The material taught will carry you far and this is one of a few classes that applies to the real world, no matter what profession you end up in.
Jen is an awesome professor, maybe even one of my favorites! She is super funny and the lectures are interesting and relatable. Go to class and take notes, read the books and study a little before the tests and you'll be golden.
She's super nice and will help you with whatever you want if you go to her office. She's flexible with her office hours. There's no real textbook. Her lectures were fun to go to (even at 8:30 in the morning) and she knows what she's talking about. There were only three tests throughout the class but you have to read the material. Go to class.
I loved going to this class. Lectures were easy to listen to, take notes on and follow. She's clearly passionate about the subject, but doesn't lecture in a way that makes you uncomfortable if you're not into it. Really funny. She doesn't use a textbook, or post lectures so attendance and notes are a must.
She's a great professor and made and 8:30 class worthwhile. Lectures are fairly organized and going to class is a must. There are only three tests, all multiple choice. Go to class, do the readings, and study a bit.
Jen is a super funny professor and the examples she used in class were great. Tests 23 essay 13 MC. This class does involve a lot of reading (3 qualitative studies) but they were all fascinating. I like the way she structures her notes and goes at a good pace for slow writers like me. Take this course, it was completely eye opening and engaging!
Jen Lois is amazing. Her course changed my life. I would highly recommend her courses. The key is to go to class, take notes, listen, turn in your assignments, and study for her tests. You will learn a lot about our society and yourself in her classes.
This class has changed the way I think. I would recommend it to anyone who has any interest in the ways other genders may thing about things and how they experience life. LOVEEEEE this class. I want to be homies with Jen, she is hilarious. Everybody should take this class. Just make sure not to skip class. It's not mandatory but kinda is.
GREAT prof. Hard class. Definitely a lot of memorization, but a lot of it seems intuitive. She cracks jokes constantly in class, and definitely is able to keep 150 students awake at 8:30 am. She's also super funny. Tests are harder than you think. Your grade is based on only 3 exams, the first two being 30% of your grade and the final 40%.
You must like multiple choice questions!
I took Gender in Society as my first SOC class and I loved Jen. She was funny, thoughtful, and very knowledgable. She does not put her PP online - so you MUST go to class. However, she always made class enjoyable, so that was fine. Instead of making you buy a 200 dollar text, she requires novel style books that are actually interesting to read.
Jen Lois is the best lecturer I've come across at Western thus far. She's hilarious and makes the already interesting material even more fascinating. If you need this class for a GUR or major or anything, take it! The tests aren't ridiculously easy, but if you do the readings and take notes, you'll be golden.
Jen was SO great! Her lectures were super interesting and fun and worth going to class even though it was early. Tests are hard if you don't study and don't finish the reading, otherwise they're easy if you know the material. The class is based off of three multiple choice tests only and she doesn't post the lectures, so make sure you go to class!
Jen is easily my favorite professor at Western. She's hilarious and easy to talk to. She genuinely knows how to connect with students and she makes an 8:30am class exciting and enjoyable. If you get a chance to take a class with Jen, absolutely take it. You will love it and then you can come back and thank me.
This was my first class I took (at 8:30 AM) as an incoming freshman. I had a very little understanding of Sociology before this class, but little did I know I am now a declared Sociology major! Jen is an incredible prof, she knows what she's talking about and keeps her lectures interesting and insightful! I highly recommend this course.
This was my first ever college class and I was super nervous. Jen is hilarious and amazing. Her lectures are great and I looked forward to class every morning. I'm so sad to be leaving. If I could take this class every quarter I would!
I took her gender class for my sociology minor and absolutely loved it. Her class was always my favorite part of the day. Each lecture was extremely applicable to every day life. She's really passionate about the material and just a great professor. I'm taking her deviance class next quarter because I liked her so much (and she's an easy grader).
If you're considering taking a SOC course, take it with Jen! I took her 268 Gender course last quarter (got a B) & am currently in her 251 Deviance course. Lectures are engaging & I never feel like falling asleep even at 8:30am. You *can* skip class but I wouldn't recommend it. Grade is based on 3 multiple choice exams- that's it. Would take again.
I took this class fall quarter of my Freshman year and I declared my Sociology major the following quarter because of Jen! The material itself is very fascinating and the passion she has for her work is inspiring. The class is very easy as long as you maintain good attendance.
She's so awesome!!
No hw, only 3 exams. Doesn't let you leave during exams. Assigns a lot of reading. Cant miss any classes. Tests are tough.
Likes to share her opinion most of the time. Exams are a waste and the questions are meant to mess with you...
Class is graded on 3 multiple choice tests, no assignments no extra credit. The reading is from actual books not textbooks, very important to do reading asks a lot of questions about it on exams. Attendance isn't mandatory but she does not post her slides/notes. Overall just an average, run of the mill class.
Her lectures are interesting, engaging, and real-world applicable. Workload is not to be disregarded, but manageable. Always looked forward to going to class.
Jen is HILARIOUS! I had her for an 8:30am and she made it enjoyable to actually attend class even though attendance isn't mandatory. Theres a ton of reading and her tests aren't too hard if you read and attend class. Overall, she's an amazing teacher and would recommend!
Go to class, take notes, read the chapters at least once easy A!
SHE IS AMAZING. I absolutely LOVED her class and that's coming from someone who isn't in love with school
Jen is the best professor I have had here at Western. She is so passionate about her lectures and makes it fun to learn. TAKE A CLASS FROM HER EVEN IF YOU DON'T NEED TO! Only grade is based on tests, but they are only multiple choice and she provides apt study guides.
This class was super interesting and was made more engaging by Jen. She doesn't post any lectures on canvas so you have to go to class, but it's a fun subject. There are readings for each test so I'd either split them up with someone else or start them early.
Jen is the best professor I've ever had. She's actually what made me decide my major. Exams can be tricky if you don't study for them. DO THE READING. Her lectures are hilarious and definitely makes it worth getting to class at 8 in the morning. 10/10 would recommend.
Jen was by far the best professor I've had at Western! It's an 8:30 am class but you actually want to go. Super interesting and engaging, her lectures are hilarious, and I learned a lot. It's a lot of reading but they're really interesting. Jen is approachable and helpful, and is really passionate about what she teaches. Highly recommend!
I took Gender and was hopeful Deviance would be similar. Jen is far from deviant and her lectures relied heavily on televisions shows to enforce the lessons. It was like a pop culture critique on criminology rather than a class on social deviance. She was very innocent about real-life deviant behavior and it was hard to respect her lessons.
Jen is an awesome sociology prof. I had her for winter quarter and genuinely enjoyed going to class (even though it was at 8:30am! Still worth it) She only has 3 tests in this class and that is your whole grade, so study hard! Hands down one of the most important classes i've taken here at WWU. She's amazing in every single way!
Lectures are incredibly interesting and thought-provoking. Made me seriously consider a soc major. She is super funny, quick-witted and knows her s**t. Readings come from actual chapter books as opposed to textbooks which I personally enjoy but it's not everyones cup of tea. Make sure you attend lecture and read and you pass. Highly recommend.
Another great sociology class. Great, funny professor. She knows the subject very well and make it very entertaining to listen to. The material is fair, like any other class in the subject, and the tests respect that. 3 books to read throughout the quarter - it's really not too bad, good books actually. Wonderful course, like the rest in this dept.
I think Jen's a good teacher. She can go off track with personal stories, but she knows the material well, so you'll def learn. The class is based on 3 tests, and the questions can be tricky, so actually read the books assigned and come to class. None of that "easy A" mindset. Some students click with her, some don't. Good class overall.
Jen is a m a z i n g. This class changed my life, no exaggeration. You do have to read though, and when I say have to, I mean you have to start reading them then you will realize how good the books are and won't be able to stop.
The lectures were pretty funny and interesting to get through, but the readings were terrible. The readings were completely disconnected from the lectures, and were never discussed or even mentioned by the professor. There are several questions on each exam about the readings. The class would have been just as informative without readings.
Here's the thing about Jen, she is smart and funny. She gives lots of space for the class to share their experiences, which because everyone has experience with gender is vital. getting a good grade in the class is easy if you show up and do the reading. But you must read the readings. There are three multiple choice test with 50 questions each.
JLo's class is a LOT of fun. She uses relevant examples to relate to the material being learned, the documentaries are cool, and even the TEXTBOOK was interesting. The only things she grades are the exams so study hard, go to class and you'll be fine.
Jen's lectures are incredibly interesting and you can tell how passionate she is about what she is teaching. She doesn't put her lectures on canvas so you should attend all the classes and keep up with the readings.
I took SOC251 with Jen and she is the best professor I've had at Western thus far and she is really wonderful, hilarious, and gives lots of examples to help you understand the material. The class was solely based on four exams (non-cumulative) but they are not hard to get the hang of. She gives a lot of study tips and tricks! Great class!
Jen is an amazing professor! She makes every lecture enjoyable and interesting. Loved her deviant class so much, I signed up for her Soc 268 Gender class as well! Make sure to do the reading and to keep up with it! I slacked and definitely missed points on the exams because of it. Lectures are great, but not on canvas, so go to class!
Prof Lois is hilarious, and she makes sociology come to life-due to her class I have finally decided to switch my major to sociology. She always has the class laughing. Although, attendance is not mandatory-her lectures are not posted online, and the tests rely heavily on the lectures.
Lectures are fun with Jen, she makes the whole class laugh and has fun with her classes. She doesn't take attendance but I'd recommend going to class (she doesn't post her slides and pulls test questions from lectures) Tests are multiple choice, and the questions are straight up and fair as long as you've done your reading and work. Great prof
Loved the class! JLo is awesome, funny and straight forward. Makes the subject matter personal with personal stories. One poster commented on she wasn't deviant so the class was bad. Nobody can know everything about all deviance, you have to look to the sociology and that is what that person missed. Its not about you its about sociology.
Jen is an amazing professor and I take her as often as possible. Knows her stuff, is very enthusiastic and fun, but heavy on reading and her lower level classes are graded only on 3 pretty big exams so you have to study a decent amount.
I love Jen to death. I took her Sociology of Deviance class winter quarter and she is a large reason why I declared a soc major. This was the first quarter this class was taught so it was a lot of seeing what does and doesn't work. The class was so eye opening to me and I looked forward to going to class solely because Jen taught it!
Jen is one of the best teachers I have ever had, she is passionate about everything she talks about and she truly understands how to connect with students.
Jen is one of the best professors I have ever had. This class is only graded on 3 exams so you HAVE to put in the work! But her tests are really fair and relate directly to what you learn in class. Jen is a gem and she makes showing up to class really easy as her lectures are fun and easy to understand. This class changed my life in the best way.
Loved having Jen as a professor. She's very engaging and fun as a lecturer, incorporates a lot of visual aids and class discussion. I learned a lot in this class, and she was very approachable for discussing class during her office hours. Take notes, do your readings and study for your exams.
I LOVED JEN. She made the class exciting to go to. I enjoyed her passion and dedication to the subject and how she worked to get everyones ideas and thoughts incorporated into the class. She showed great videos and had multiple books to the class that taught things you can take into your own life. I would take another one of her classes in a heart.
the hype is real y'all. Jen is fantastic and you enjoy being in class. 268 and soc of emotions both had 3 in class exams, but soc of emotions (upper division) had a literature review. 3 (very interesting and quick) books to read. Absolutely adore her. Go to class and read the books (even taking no notes) you'll get a B easy
Best professor I've had so far. So funny and really knows her stuff. I was sad on the days I didn't have her class. Definitely need to keep up on the readings, but they're interesting to read. This class changed my perspective on life, I 100% recommend Jen and I can't wait to take more of her classes.
For Soc 268 you are only graded through 3 tests. Jen is an amazing lecturer and makes the class feel personal even when there is 150+ students. Attendance isn't graded but you will still want to go to most every class because the tests are 80% lecture material.
Doesn't post slides, so make sure you go and keep up w readings to pass. Her women's class is basically just a romance novel class. We spent over half the quarter talking about them and reading one-not what I signed up for. Content is very basic, didn't go into depth/cover anything mind blowing/interesting. I won't be taking another class from her
I love her class. Jen makes class fun! She is very funny. There are only three exams and one quiz that's in the beginning of the quarter, she lets you retake it. For the exams you need to read books, there are three of them for the course. She doesn't post slides, in syllabus states she doesn't like computers in class. 100% would take it again
Best instructor I've ever had. I took it as an 8:30 class and it wasn't even that hard to go because her lectures are that interesting. There are some readings, but that's all the homework there is and the tests are mainly based on the lectures. She makes it really fun and easy to learn and get a good grade.
Jen is engaging, knowledgeable, and honest. The class is structured around 3 tests but there are 2 easy extra credit assignments. The textbooks are inexpensive but entertaining and filled with gripping ideas/research. Studying is a must, the tests are not easy but you can pass if you show up and study. She doesn't post powerpoints on canvas.
Jen rocks. She's thorough, funny, and clearly knowledgeable. She is careful with her wording, but not in a way that makes you roll your eyes. Somehow, she strikes a balance of being blunt and sensitive. Take her class.
Jen does a wonderful job teaching about gender and sexuality. She is very knowledgable and an all-around amazing person/professor. The lectures are eye-opening and very interesting. She also really cares about her students. The structure of this online course is so great! I really recommend. All lectures are recorded and you can work ahead.
I really enjoyed Jen's class, even if it was online due to COVID. We were graded on 3 exams based on lectures, textbooks, and videos/articles. Her expectations were clear, her lectures were engaging and enjoyable, and the exams were taken straight from the material. She never tried to throw in trick questions or be confusing.
I absolutely adored Jen Lois! Took this class at beginning of pandemic & was bummed I wouldn't get to experience her in class but her online, recorded lectures were incredible! So funny and uses a lot of fantastic, diverse examples and mediums to help explain sociological concepts. Grade is based on 3 exams plus some extra credit opportunities!
Amazing online lectures. Because of the pandemic, she recorded her lectures... and let me just say! They are SO insightful, easy to understand and very entertaining. I have never had a professor put so much genuine work into their lectures! She is amazing and I would take a class with her again.
Seriously my favorite professor at Western. She is kind, funny, understanding, and knowledgeable. I've taken multiple classes with her and learn so much every time. She is what made me want to be a sociology major. Lots of quizzes and discussions but they are easy and there are 3 essay exams. Put in the work and you'll succeed. Take her classes!!!!
Literally the funniest professor at WWU. Her lectures were straight forward and thought provoking You can tell she cares about the material she teaches and is very passionate about it. I learned a lot and barely studied because it's easy to pay attention when her lectures are so entertaining.
Jen is one of my all time favorite profs. All her classes have been so interesting and she is a really engaging professor. I will say you have to want to be in her class in order to do well. Her tests are fair; as long as you are doing the work you will pass fairly easily. As long as you know your stuff you'll be alright.
Amazing class. Highly recommend. Textbook: is a homework reading but you can do well on tests without it because you only read a few chapters of it for each test (it's not a traditional textbook, its a regular book)
Ive had Jen nearly every quarter for a year now, and overall she is really great. This capstone class is really fun and you get to do your own research, but the grading is kind of ridiculous. For example, you get penalized on a ROUGH DRAFT for a literature review. Just 3 points off brought my grade down 9%. Seems to be her thing to grade harshly.
Took asynchronous class so it's lots of lectures and reading. But Jen makes the lectures super fun and easy to understand. You're graded by easy mini-quizzes and 3 big tests. You can definitely get an A if you pay attention and do all of the work. Everything is clear and you know what to expect during the entire course. You should take this class.
I really enjoyed this class, it was mostly lectures and exams with a few films and extra credit. The lectures are enjoyable as Jen keeps you engaged the entire time. The content is interesting and relatable. If I didn't already have the credit I would take this class again and experience it in person.
Awesome content. TONS of reading, but little homework aside from that. Almost entire grade based on three very well-written exams, with open-book and open-notes. If you attend class, pay attention and take good notes, you should pass no problem. She posts video lectures of her classes on Canvas, but they don't have all of the content.
In person class with lectures posted online if you miss anything. Easy to follow and very organized. Three total exams worth most of your grade with a few smaller assignments. Interesting and fun positive environment. Felt like it was slightly hard to get an a without memorizing everything bc only 3 exams. Great otherwise
This is my second (and likely not last) class with Jen Lois and I enjoyed it greatly. Lois knows how to organize her material and convey it in a clear way. She's very responsive with her students as well. You will have to read quite a bit and her classes are material heavy, but if you can stay on top of your work, you'll be fine.
Professor Jen is super kind and caring. Her class covers a lot but the way she teaches makes it seem like nothing. Your grade is based off of 3 multiple choice 50 question exams. Easy A if you do the readings and take notes in lectures. I didn't study for them and got near perfect scores. A lot of the readings are exceptionally interesting.
Taking her class was an amazing experience due to how entertaining she is! I loved having access to online lectures as well as in person ones, which saved my ass on multiple occasions. 10/10 would take again
Jen was my first ever SOC professor at WWU. I first took a class with her in 2019 and loved it. She's funny and relatable. COVID changed her. She seems burnt out, which is totally understandable! But it's difficult when that impacts students. She is not as up-to-date with the world as a professor should be. I was disappointed with my recent class
Loved this class! Super interesting material conveyed in a fun way. If you miss class you're covered because she has great lecture videos. My only negative about this class is that the only grades are 3 exams, but you do have a couple of EC opportunities.
Despite her lectures being online due to it being an asynchronous course, it was still an interesting class!
lectues are easy to follow and she gives plenty of time to write down notes. she is so funny and passionate about teaching. definitely show up to class, you wont regret it. very engaging with students. favorite professor ever
Lois is great and I will take her again. BUT, I believe the tests are a little hard to follow. I would have liked to see more room for talking in class. Her videos and lectures are engaging but it can be hard to regurgitate them on exams. 3 exams, multitude of discussion posts due before every class, and 3 books. Cool class, but get ready to read!!
Great class from a great professor. Very symbolic interaction heavy with an emphasis on Goffman (who the professor loves).
exams are note & homework heavy so make sure youre doing the work & being clear with notes. classes/discussions are enjoyable. grade heavily depends on exams, offers extra credit & unlimited quiz attempts to get 100% take advantage of that. cannot pass class by slacking or cheating off someone elses notes.
She was nice, and the class was good. If you attend the lectures (you can miss up to three and watch them online) and take lots of notes, you will pass. There's lots of reading and watching videos but I didn't do much of it and I have been able to pass the exams with good scores.
LOVE the lectures, if you pay attention and engage in lectures as well as read the homework assigned you will pass the class. Jen was super charismatic and engaging even in a huge lecture, I would take this class again if I could!
Wonderful professor. I've taken two classes of hers and loved both. Her lectures are interesting and educational, and the extra materials are helpful. Her classes aren't too difficult.
Jen is amazing. Im a 1st year and was initially terrified because the entire grade was based on three big tests, but the tests were easy peasy if you came to class and read the readings. The lectures were fascinating and Jen encouraged engagement and was funny and interesting! Im trans and I learned so much more about gender! Such a good class!
Jen is hilarious. Her class was super easy as long as you did the readings and attended the lecture. Tests were open note, open book, and online. She really despises the grading system at Universities and makes it clear that tests are to make sure we are just understanding the content. Everything on our exams is directly from the lectures!
Jen is an amazing professor, this was my first ever college class and for being an 8:30 lecture Jen made each lesson so interesting and has made me very interested in sociology. The tests are open note and online which made me feel a lot less stressed when we had any exam, I would 100% take another class from her
Jen was an amazing professor. This course is not very difficult and very straightforward, but it is very lecture-based & attending class does matter. As long as you read the homework and take good notes, the exams will be easy. She does a great job of keeping up with present-day media and even tries to use trendy slang.
This class was awesome and you can tell that Jen is passionate about the material and teaching it. She has engaging lectures that are easy to follow and if you do the readings and go to lectures you are set to do well on tests.
Jen is the finniest professor I've ever had. She makes the material easy to understand and tells a lot of jokes. Her class is my favorite class I'm taking this quarter.
Don't let the syllabus scare you! Jen is an incredible teacher and the content is super interesting. Lectures are engaging and involve lots of conversation. I'm genuinely going to miss this class. The best class I've taken so far at WWU.
Jen is an amazing, funny, and caring prof! Extremely interesting and engaging lectures. Make sure you're there to take notes-- the way she tells you to (it's very straight forward) Don't skip lecture. Do the readings, and take notes too. One syllabus quiz, 3 online exams, and one extra credit opportunity. So, be prepared to do well on tests!
Took Jen for both my winter and fall quarter, her classes are the same all the way around and so simple once you know the ins and outs. Such an easy GUR all you gotta do is go to class, get the notes and do the readings. Her exams are straight from the lectures. Her lectures can get long but she does a decent job of keeping it entertaining. 10/10!!
Jen is really funny, and clearly super passionate about sociology! Her lectures are long but easy to digest since she pulls lots of examples from pop culture/media and generally keeps things engaging and light. Grade is very test-based, but the fact that she provided recordings on lectures in addition to in person class was very helpful!
I love Jen and so will you.
Took as a summer class. a LOT for 6 weeks (20+ assignments a week, no joke). 6 papers were due, which was also a lot. Would've given a 5/5, but whenever you email to ask a question or for help, she would respond in rude and condescending ways. Gave good, but confusing feedback. GREAT lectures, she knows her stuff. Fun if you like the subject.
This is a class for intense feminists and the prof makes jokes at the expense of men
Loved Jen, super easy class & super informative. She's sweet & her lectures are entertaining. Grade was based on 3 open-note online exams & 2 extra credit assignments. She assigns some readings and videos but they're all really interesting. I learned so much from her class, definitely take Jen if you have the chance!!!
Jen is a great professor! She's engaging and down-to-earth, making the class super entertaining. Class is graded on 3 tests and 2 little quizzes, and there is an opportunity to regain points on tests by writing brief papers for extra credit. Highly recommend it to everyone!
had gender and society at 8:30am and i can confidently say that its what got me out of bed most days
I took Jen's class in Gender and Society and loved it! The lectures were engaging and never boring. I looked forward to coming to class everyday and thoroughly enjoyed the topics she taught. She assigns a lot of reading, but most of them are fairly short. Don't skip the reading and don't skip class!
She doesn't put any lecture material/slides on Canvas, I would strongly advise going to as many classes as possible because it is hard to learn the info w/o being there. Her canvas was busy/really overwhelming to look at. While attendance isn't mandatory. Exams are usually 50% or more based off of lecture material. She's fun to learn from though.
Such intertesting material. I would say it's an easy A if you go to every lecture (I made the mistake of skipping a lot). But you did get three chances to make up through the online lecture catalog and you can get through 1 week of lecture material maybe more at 2x speeds so.
I adored Jen's SOC339 course. She is clearly a seasoned professor. Her lectures were funny, well written, and memorable. The readings were fascinating and relevant. She made the classroom feel like a community. Our class was engaged, eager to learn, and friendly. 10/10. The exams are two essays and some multiple choice. Reading is a must to succeed
Jen inspired me in something I had no idea I cared about. I love her, will take her again, and will look up to her forever. She manages a classroom so well, and is hilarious. My qualm: make sure when you miss class and access the lectures online you have VERY GOOD INTERNET. There is so much data on one page and things take FOREVER to load.
Very goof professor but class was based around lots of readings and lectures. Grades consisted of 3 exams that were difficult. Fun and engaging lectures.
love jen so much!!! she genuinely cares about her students and the topics she talks about. totally recommend.
Professor Lois is so great. There are only 3 exams, one is the final, all open note and open book. She makes her lectures interesting, promotes class engagement and she's pretty funny. She's responsive to emails too and clearly wants her students to succeed. Take a class with her if you have the chance, you won't regret it.
Super super super interesting class! Professor Lois makes her lectures engaging and fun. The class is easy if you keep up with readings and go to lecture.
Very nice Super interesting class Would for sure recommend to others
Jen is a fantastic professor! Her grading criteria is incredibly easy to understand. She is extremely fair with her expectations as well. Despite the class being an 8:30 it was easy to wake up and go, Jen is extremely engaging in her lectures. There are a lot of readings but they're very digestible and memorable! I highly recommend this class.
Do not take this class if you want an easy online course. Jen makes this class 15 hours of coursework a week, no joke. There are 3-5 discussion boards, readings, multiple lectures, and quizzes due every M/W/F. There are 3 exams with a 2-hour requirement where you have to write 2, 2-3 page essays and she suggests writing all 6 prompts in advance.
The class was very informative and the material was interesting. The lectures were engaging and included short films, discussions, and more. She was very helpful outside of class. Her lectures were very clear and informative.
Ignore the high rating if you're working class. Jen prides herself on the extensive difficulty and sheer amount of coursework she requires for an elective with NO extensions or late assignments allowed. I'm glad I started therapy before this class - you get behind, you fail. Don't even get me started on exams. For your own health, pick another prof
Besides one extra credit paper worth 4 points the course grade is only dependent on the 3 exams. The lectures were engaging and this course was very interesting! I loved her class and only wish there were other graded assignments/projects.
Engaging lectures and a fun professor, but the readings and exams can be challenging. unstuck study AI was a lifesaver for study prep - made a big difference.
I took this class summer quarter (6 weeks instead of 10) and really enjoyed it a lot. Jen's lectures are super funny and engaging but the exams are tough due to the amount of writing you have to do. It was supposed to be 25 hrs/week, but i often spent 35 prepping for the 6 essays biweekly. Still, it was one of the best classes I've taken:)
I cannot recommend her enough. Her lectures are clear and informative. She gives time to take notes and answer questions. She does have exams, but no other assignments and the exams are open note and fairly easy. She allows access to 3 online lecture videos which is incredibly helpful when your behind on something or missed a class.
Amazing prof! She gives engaging and interesting lectures, always laughing and surprised by her teaching, and easy grading based only on open-note exams. I will be taking more classes from Jen and would recommend you take one from her too.
Jen is a gem. Very understanding, with funny lectures and well thought through opinions. She's great to email, responds quickly, and has the experience to teach sociology content smoothly and proficiently.
Jen is an extremely smart woman; she is very passionate about sociology and this is super evident in her lectures. She doesn't mess around!! Exams/lectures are structured the same for all of her courses, the pattern is predictable & appreciated. Her deviance course convinced me to make the switch from psych to soc major. Will always recommend her.
339 is super interesting. But theres a ton of homework & exams are stupidly hard. Each has 2 essays that are long and require references, but notes are not allowed. I can barely write everything in the time, & there's also multiple choice questions to answer. Don't take if you want a class with a light workload or if you struggle with memorization
I LOVE JEN! She is one the best professors ever and I am taking her again this next quarter. You have to read a lot of articles and watch a lot of videos. She makes every lecture super interesting and is so caring and funny. I seriously cannot recommend her enough. Take her class if you have the opportunity to.
Jen is great! Very passionate, engaging lecturer and introduces lots of interesting/entertaining examples. It is a lot of required reading, but grading was entirely based on 3 open-note, open-book(?) asynchronous timed exams. Had a great time in this class, easy and fun A.
Very interesting topic and she's great at answering questions. If you love pop culture, you will love her class. She often uses TV and Movies as examples, which make the content very easy to understand. Jen is super funny, and her class is very easy. There are only 3 exams, but they are open note, open book. Get ready to do a lot of reading though!
Amazing professor, amazing lectures, so engaging and interesting conversations. She's very articulate and well versed in what she's talking about. Class isn't mandatory but you will miss a lot of info if you skip and she does not post slides. Lectures are where you get most of your info. Lots of reading and three big tests that require studying.
Jen was so fun to take! You do need to go to the lectures to do good on the exams though, but as long as you go & do the readings there are no other assignments for this class. (you get up to 3 online lectures to watch as a safety net if you do miss some lectures). Jen also has very interesting lectures and has clear examples of concepts.
Words cannot express how much I loved every moment of this course. The lectures were hilarious and engaging the readings were captivating and the exams were tough but fair. Every lecture I would sit in a state of rapture hanging on to every word. Remember: "Deviance is a social construct!" 🤯 In summation: 10/10 would engage in deviance with Jen.
Jen is truly the best professor at WWU. i've taken two of her classes and am planning to take another! she's so funny and engaging and has perfect examples to help you understand concepts. you do have to go to class as she doesn't post her lectures of canvas, but it's so worth it! if you do the HW and go to class, the exams are easy :) 100000/10
This professor treats her students like they're in high school still. No access to course materials outside of class, and must attend to get notes. You can "access" these online course materials 3 times if you miss class, except you need a super computer to do so. Test questions are made to make you fail, when they should be common sense.
Jen Lois is very smart and well-spoken in her lectures. There are four assignments total not counting extra credit and she gives very clear instructions. All the resources are there and she is available to email. It is a really interesting class.
This is the second class of Jen's that I took. I cannot recommend her enough. The class material was super interesting and she is very engaging and super funny! Please take Jen's class if you ever get the chance.
Jen is the best professor I've ever had! She is extremely organized and you know exactly what to expect on the exams. Literally if you do the readings and come to class you'll be just fine. I always went to the lectures because she is super funny and engaging! Tests are online open-note and open-book, so if you take notes, they're super easy.
Professor Lois is a great professor! Her lectures are good and she is easy to communicate with if you ever need help! You have to do the readings if you want to do well on the tests but if you read them they're pretty light work.
I loved Soc251, and Jen made the course so interesting and insightful. I would recommend it 100%. The only thing about this course that may pose an issue to some is that three exams make up the vast majority of your grade, and if you do not study or go to class, it is so easy to fail. The trade-off for this is that you don't get a lot of homework
I really like jen however this course was somewhat boring and her videos are slightly outdated. Her tests are also so tough and require so much prep work but as far as i could tell shes not a very tough grader. I loved her as a teacher shes so smart and genuine i just think course in particular might need some reworking.
There is a lot of reading and lectures but it's pretty interesting so I got through it pretty quick.
Jen is one of the best professors I've had at Western so far. If you stay on top of homework, or are able to get ahead in lectures it makes the exams a lot easier. Tip for the exams, prepare way more than you think you need to! Regardless, I will be looking to take Jen again she's phenomenal and really passionate about what she does.
Jen is really passionate about what she does and really cares about her students. If you take good notes and pay extra attention to the assigned readings and videos you're set! She doesn't assign any homework but there are 3 exams, worth 100 points each, multiple choice and open note.
Second class I have taken with Jen, and as always, I loved it! Lectures were incredibly interesting, and her format made remembering key points easy. Jen loves what she teaches, and she is an eccentric and fun professor to have. We were only graded on discussion posts and 3 exams. LOTS of reading, but the materials were all free. AND GO TO CLASS!!!
Jen is awesome, best professor ever.I would take any class she teaches even if its difficult, her lectures are very engaging, she is very funny, nice, and is one of the most intelligent people I've ever met. For 268 you need to show up to class for notes but there's no homework, easiest 5 credit class Ive taken. 339 is also great!! Highly reccomend
