Her class is fun and interesting, not much homework, mostly reading.
A nice and entertaining professor. Some of the subject material is pretty interesting and her comments are pretty amusing. Not too much homework, just a lot of reading and a paper. Overall, I'd recommend her. And I think she said she reads this, too. :)
fabulous teacher, just fabulous
I REALLY liked this class, and I'm not even a Gender Studies major. The subject material is usually really interesting (reading due every class, sometimes kinda long). Two reg. papers, lots of good movie clips :)Really nice/funny/interesting/clear/enthusiastic. (teaches other classes too)
She is great! She makes complex issues easy to understand.
Professor Maher is a very knowledgable, helpful individual. I enjoy her class very much. The only caveat is she adheres to the strict attendance policy of the Gender Studies department, so don't miss any classes. The only criticism would be that group work in any class sucks, so why do it at all?
At first she seems intimidating, but she's not as bad as she makes herself sound. She's very strict with attendance and people who leave early, etc. Otherwise, she makes the class very entertaining and interesting.
SHE HAS YOUR A.I.'S GRADE EVERYTHING, YOU NEVER GET HIGHER THEN A B- ON A PAPER.
love this class. she is intimidating at first, but actually extremely accessible to her students. she makes really funny comments, but the attendance rules are the only bad part. tests are easy, papers are straightforward.
She is Funny, opinionated, and easy to get along with...tough paper grader though!
Ms. Maher is a first-clASS PROFESSOR! SHe knows her material and knows how to impart it. She's published in cool magazines and hip essay collections. Plus, she has a dreamy husband and a gorgeous, albeit spoiled-rotten dog. She's very likable if you have good attendance. One of the smartest, hippest profs I've ever had.
This lady ROCKS! She is an amazing professor! Attend class- simply because they are so interesting- and understand the concepts of each author and you will do just fine! She uses movie clips to exlain the concepts too! There are two papers, two exams and you have to read a Romance Novel of your choice- very fun! She is hilarious! Def. recommended!
By far the best professor I've had in my undergraduate experience. This is the most interesting class I have taken. I love debating with my friends about the things I've learned from her and her readings. The class is well worth it. But you HAVE to go to class!
i really enjoyed this class but unfortunately didn't get the best grade-she is very knowledgeable and makes you understand and enjoy the material-the assigned readings can be and are difficult, which make the papers difficult to write too. she relies on her AI's mostly and can be hypocritical at times, i have mixed opinions on her
As a non-gender studies major, I found her a difficult grader and opinionated. She didn't keep her opinions to herself and made me feel uncomfortable. If you have views different than hers and confront her about how you feel in class, she brushes it off. Don't take her courses unless you're a gender major.
She's a very personable woman, with a lot of funny quotes. Overall, she can be a bit difficult because she expects you to rise to the occasion. This isn't bad, but if you want an easy ride look elsewhere.
Very entertaining classes to look forward to and that clarify the difficult readings required. The biggest problem I had was I never knew what she was looking for in an A paper... just seems kind of subjective.
Hard class. Bad AIs. Never know how to write a paper that will please her. Bad class. Don't take with her.
I was really excited about taking her class before I actually took it. She gives you random reading quizzes, so do the readings. But she doesn't like it when you try to relate your own personal experiences to the class discussion unless you're REALLY interesting. Also, her opinion is the only opinion. Don't even try arguing your own with her.
You are missing out if you don't take a class with her. She is hilarious and makes class really interesting. I though the grading was fair and the exams were extremely easy... only 25 Q's multiple choice.
Awesome teacher. Super funny and charismatic!
She is hilarious and makes class really interesting. I always felt engaged & she explains really well. The tests were super easy, just 25 m/c. On the flip side, writing an essay for her is ridiculous. She grades so harshly and it's nearly impossible to please her. Overall she's a really good prof but just be warned and be prepared for those essays.
I really can not believe the ratings she has received. As a senior at IU who has taken many gender classes, she is by FAR the WORST yet. Don't get me wrong, her lectures are interesting, but she is cold hearted and could care less about her students, seriously. And as for grading papers, like it has been said its impossible to please her. Horrible.
My favorite teacher I've had at IU so far, as a sophomore. Yes, her papers are a bit difficult, but they're not nearly as bad as people are making them sound. The tests aren't too bad at all, pretty straightforward. The AIs are not the best, not very friendly. But I loved Professor Maher and I am excited to take another class with her!
Would not recommend this class. Class title included "Pop Culture" but most of the class is focused on historical readings that are pretty boring. Comparable to a high school teacher that is obsessed with attendance and cell phone use. Essays are tough- I received 25% off my essay because of a misunderstanding. She is not lenient whatsoever.
If you know how to rate a rhetorical analysis, you'll do fine in the class. My advice: do the readings, listen in class, know how to write a paper.
Your grade in this class consists of two rhetorical analyses, questions over a romance novel, a midterm, and a final. The AIs do all the grading, so it really just depends who you get for AIs, but so far I've heard they've all been fairly tough graders. The exams are straightforward and not too difficult. Attendance is mandatory. Interesting class.
Amazing professor. All though she lectures the whole period, I have never ever been bored during one of her lectures. Funny and great personality!! The class would be more difficult without the help of the AI's. Talk to them and use them to help you with papers. If you talk to them you will do well on papers. You must show up to class
Jen Maher was a funny well educated teacher however she was not suited to be a teacher. She does not specify anything for her tests and leave grading of papers to her AIs. She announced that the final was cumulative after our last class and after she cancelled class which would have served as a review class just because she did not want to come in.
Jen was a wonderful teacher for my IFS class. Our class was small and connected well through her rather crude humor. She is passionate and clear in her lecturing and will assign reading with short response quizzes the next day. We used three books for this course. I would love to take her class again. If you do the work, you'll get an A!
Shes a great professor in lecture. She is really funny and the topic of the class is extremely fascinating. She is VERY OCD about how she organizes and runs her class. There is assigned readings every class that she will give pop quizzes about. Some of the readings are hard, others not so much. Her class was my favorite by far this semester
Professor Maher is very smart, engaging, and funny. The class of hers that I took, however, had a ton of long readings; they were very interesting, but there were a lot. She is also very strict in general, calling people out for being late and stuff like that. Her essays are tough but engaging. A real stickler for the rules.
Dr. Maher is by far the best professor I've had in the gender studies department. She's incredibly funny and engaging. Attendance is mandatory and there are no electronics allowed in class. Make sure you do the reading, sometimes there are graded reading responses. People say she grades harshly but I disagree. Ask for help if you're worried.
Jennifer is hilarious. I absolutely loved this class. Really fun material and lectures are never boring. I really learned a lot but enjoyed every minute of it. Definitely recommend unless you're against feminism in which case you will probably disagree with her a lot. Also, she warns that it's not easy to get an A but it is.
Absolutely love Jen. Didn't have any tests, but had two big essays. I love the way she grades them because she is very specific about the way she wants an essay written, but at the same time she doesn't take off too many points for it. She gives lots of grade feedback and is a very fair grader. You have to work in her classes, but its worth it.
Amazing and nice and just the most interesting person ever
Jen was by far my favorite teacher! She's kind of quirky but always made us laugh in class. She likes to call people out if they arrive late or if you have your cell phone out. There are only two essays but she's a picky grader. And lots of random reading quizzes so make sure you read!!
Jen was hilarious and made this class very interesting. I loved her class, although it was a lot of work and a ton of reading, her lectures were always so entertaining and she really does know what she is talking about and I always understood the readings after going to class. Attendance is mandatory and you will have to work hard for your grade.
Very hard grading and not a lot to do to recover from bad grades. Would not take this class again. She is an entertaining teacher but way too hard of a grader just to get Gen Ed credits.
Prof. Maher was super cool and nice. The class was very interesting and I enjoyed it a lot. We had two rhetorical analysis papers, a midterm and a final, and we also had to choose a corny romance novel and write a paper about it. There is also a fair amount of reading
Prof. Maher is hilarious and very knowledgeable about gender studies overall, and popular culture studies. There are papers and a midterm and final. If you are not a good writer, do not take course. But, it is very fun and interesting
Jen is by far my favorite teacher at IU, she is super hilarious and her classes always have a good mood, however get ready to do a ton of reading and be ready to answer questions about them, your grade for G225 will be based in 6 assignments, so make sure to prepare for them because it will be hard to recover if you don't do well in one of them.
I love Jen. She is tough, incredibly smart, and hilarious. If you're looking for an easy A, don't take any of her classes. She makes you work for your grade... but she gives amazing feedback and is so constructive in making you a great writer and a better student. I highly recommend taking a class with her if you want to challenge yourself.
SHE IS HILARIOUS! most people in her class (me included) hadn't taken a gender class before, next thing we know we're watching magic mike XXL, reading playboy magazine - it's one of the most entertaining classes I've ever taken. She is absolutely awesome.
I love dr Maher!!! She is HILARIOUS! Her lectures are so much fun and there's no way you'll get bored in any of her classes. She does make you work for your grade though. She is by far the best teacher I've ever had
I had Jen as a professor for my Intensive Freshman Seminar. Even now it was one of the best classes Ive had at IU. Her lectures and classes were fun and fascinating, and Jen was excellent at getting all of us to connect.
I thought Jen's class was fine. She's a very tough grader and sometimes won't give as much specific feedback as you'd like. She takes rough drafts of papers but doesn't give actual feedback on them generally. I really didn't like her grading scale: you need a 95% for an A instead of an A- which I found unreasonable.
Jen is a really good person. Honestly, her classes are the only ones where I feel challenged anymore in the IU Gender Studies department. If at all possible, take her class.
MAKE SURE TO COME TO CLASS!! Professor Maher is awesome and hilarious. I highly recommend taking Professor Maher. Make sure you have experience in writing and do not mind reading a lot. The class is graded on two essays, a midterm, and a final, so be prepared for everything. Overall, one of the best professors I had. She is not afraid to roast btw
I love her!! She is hilarious and super fun which makes the lectures not boring at all. She is kinda strict on her grading but if you follow directions you'll be fine. Do not take this class if you're super Christian. You will see p*nises in class and it will be awesome.
Dont take this class if you arent proficient in writing and English. She literally has been grading our responses based on our writing skills, not on if we learned the gender ideas. She gives interesting lectures but grades all her writing more about how you wrote it.
Jen is a super funny and chill professor. The class has a lot of hard readings, but Jen will explain them well. There are random quizzes over the readings, but they are short answer and open book; they aren't graded but she reads them all at the end to see if she should bump your grade up or not. Only 2 essays and they are easy.
jens lectures are funny but this class requires A TON of reading. shes SO anal about how she wants her papers and theres few grades in the class so its almost impossible to make up points. you definitely have to work for your grade.
This professor was very open, educated, and kind! She made her lectures interesting and the weekly assignments fairly easy. The two papers for the course are a little hard to get an A on, but overall she is funny and a great choice for a gender studies class. 8/10
You only have a few big grades. I am a good writer, got an A+ in W131. She gave me C- on papers. She is a hard grader and will refuse to give you an A on the papers. Would not recommend this course for an easy A. Annoyingggg
I took this class because of Covid and overall it wasnt bad. Weekly reading responses that you have to mess up badly to not get full credit. There are 2 papers which are graded tough but thats fine. My main issue lies in her taking points of for small mistakes. If you submit assignment in the wrong place 50% off which is a lot for her grade scale
well, her class was fun, the Rhetorical Analysis just confusing, and the way they rate your essay just way harder than the English you were expecting, I got an A in my W131 but my essay here was 14/20, don't choose this class, there was much more class easier and much more interesting.
The class was interesting, but it wasn't an easy class to be in and the instructor was very nitpicky on my papers and rhetorical analysis.
Interesting, but not very easy to read.
An amazing and kind professor. She is intense but kind, funny, and approachable. She will explain why you lost points and provide ways to gain them back. She is respectful of her student's identity, health, and time. She admits her faults and works on them. I would take her classes time and time again.
Prof Maher is the toughest teacher I have ever had. Her attendance policy is absurd. She only gives two free absences and after that, she will bump your grade down a full letter for each attendance. Especially since we are in the middle of a pandemic, this policy is ridiculous. There's more but I ran out of characters. DON'T TAKE HER CLASSES!!!!!!!
Attendance policy was pretty strict with only two absences even in the middle of a pandemic. LOTS of dense reading. The material was interesting, especially documentaries we watched. She can be very fun but be prepared for work and strict grading on writing!
I really enjoyed taking this class. Professor Maher is hilarious and she provides all of the readings required for her class so no textbook is required. That being said prepare to read 20+ pages every (or almost every) night. She gives random pop quizzes over the readings too so make sure you stay caught up. I highly recommend this professor.
often judged students and would make people feel uncomfortable.
I love Jenn. G225 is an interesting class, but does require quite a bit of reading, majority of them are pretty easy reads. Attendance is mandatory, but I was always excited to go to class, with Jenn there is never a dull moment and she keeps the whole class attentive and laughing. I wish she taught more classes here!
Great teacher, but assigns too much reading for a class thats only 120 points
This teacher is genuinely awful. She imprints her liberal feminist views on every student. Her attendance policy is crazy and if you miss more than 2 classes she bumps your grade down a whole letter. There are 100 points in the whole class which is extremely unfair considering she grades obnoxiously hard. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
I felt it was a decent class. Jennifer was funny and cared about her material, but the grading felt way too harsh on papers and the tests were kind of confusing.
A very interesting course but there are very few grades. Essays are graded harshly and attendance is very strict.
Professor Jen was the instructor of my IFS class, and I have to say that I would take this class again! She can be a bit unpredictable, but she is also approachable, fair, and very funny! There was quite a bit of reading and a few group projects as well, but the workload wasn't as heavy as other IFS classes. I recommend Professor Jen!
TAKE THIS CLASS. She is so so so funny and entertaining which makes class easier to attend. She only allows 2 absences which kind of sucks but I don't want to skip anyway. The only grades are 5 point pop quizzes, novel questions, and the midterm/final which are both open note and only 25 points each. If you do the readings you'll get an A.
Professor Maher is by far my most engaging professor. Her lectures are always funny and interesting, and lots of people participate. There is a lot of reading, and if you take the honors section, she can be tough on grading writing, but if the subject is actually interesting to you, the reading isn't bad. I always look forward to this class!
I LOVE Maher. Her lectures were engaging and fun. She had easy reading pop quizzes that were open note, and she was always available for questions. She can be challenging but will make you a better student. She can get off-topic in lectures. She is not super tech savvy, but it will not negatively effect your grade, and is understanding,
TAKE THIS CLASS. She is actually the funniest and most engaging professor I've ever had and she actually made me want to go to class. If you do the readings and attend every class then you will get an A. Final and midterm are both open note and only 25 points.
Prof Maher is an excellent teacher and so funny, I really enjoyed her class and I hope to take another !
This class was extremely engaging. I learned so much! Maher is hilarious and keeps class entertaining with her witty sarcasm. At times, this professor can be unprepared and make students feel belittled. ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY, so be ready, and be on time. Understanding the readings will carve the path to an A in this class.
In her regular section of 225 she is a great professor. She doesn't share lecture slides and has random pop quizzes, if you aren't in class you get a zero on it. She doesn't believe in excused absences so don't get sick. If you are taking her honors section DO NOT! Her grading is ridiculous, changes requirements of assignments after the due date.
I absolutely loved prof. Maher. She is hilarious and I always looked forward to coming to class. She was also really great a explaining things and was also eager to answer questions. I learned a lot and if you do the readings and show up to class getting an A is very doable.
Attendance is absolutely mandatory but worth it because she doesn't post lectures, so if you miss a class, you need to ask a classmate or look at the syllabus and after you miss 3 classes, your grade gets knocked down by a letter grade. But overall if you attend class and read the required readings it's a really easy class.
I loved Professor Maher so much! I took her IFS class Blood, Babies, and Chainsaws, and it was the best introduction to college I could possibly have asked for. She is an excellent lecturer, an expert writer and critic, and a very kind and caring person. She introduced gender theory and taught me proper academic writing. Best professor at IU!!
Very enthusiastic and hilarious. Attendance is mandatory (and there are random pop quizzes), but I never had a reason to miss anyways because the course is very interesting. She doesn't cut anybody slack, but she knows what she's talking about and is a great person.
Jen is super funny. She is a very harsh grader, but don't let the first bad grade intimidate you, you will improve your writing skills if you take her class. The readings she provides are lengthy but interesting. I enjoyed this class even though it really stressed me out for the first half of the semester
Love Her! Really cares and made my first class at IU such an amazing experience! Would recommend!
She is very passionate and knowledgeable about this subject. You must read the book and outside readings as well as come to class to pass. The information is so interesting and requires you to think critically. The exams and quizzes are open book and note, but the questions' answers are not directly stated in the book.
Her attendance policy is absurd. First, she does not believe in excused absences, so I guess don't get sick? If you get 3 absences in the class your grade gets dropped an entire letter grade. Not only that, but she will mark you absent if you even look at your phone for a second. Worst professor I have genuinely ever had.
Took IFS with Maher and she was amazing. Lectures were interesting, assignments were fun despite having so many of them. If you're thinking about this class, know you will be working all day every day on it. I still think Maher makes it worth it.
Easily the least understanding professor I have had at IU. Her lectures are pointless. She calls people out in the lecture and singles students out. She is easily the worst professor I have ever had. Not only is she a terrible teacher, but a bad person in general.
Easily the least understanding professor at IU. Her lectures are pointless. She calls people out in class and singles students out. She is easily the worst professor I have ever had. Not only is she a terrible teacher, but a bad person in general.
she is very strict about attendance and phone policy. you cannot look at your phone or else she will count you absent without saying anything. she can be funny and the lectures can be interesting from time to time but in general this class is very focused on difficult readings and pop quizzes. your grade is strictly dependent on your test grades.
I took an IFS class with her and she was great. Definitely passionate about the subject and serious about the classwork, but a chill & laid back professor overall. Really cares about her students. She is strict about the no-electronics policy.
I had a great experience with Jen! As long as you do the reading and come to class, you'll do well. There are pop quizzes, but they are open note/book as well as the exams. She is not very tech savvy, she's a little scatterbrained, and her humor may not be for everyone, but she is an absolute expert in gender studies and I loved her course!
One of my favorite professors at IU. She is ridiculously funny. Readings can be dense, but she explains them well in class. You cannot really miss class; there are 10 pop reading quizzes, she drops 2 but it will be covered on the exams. This class will make you think. I'm not a gender studies major, but I will take another class with her.
She is the worst professor I have had. Very strict attendance policy. I asked her ahead of time if I could make up a pop quiz if we have one when my GRANDMA DIED so I could go to her funeral and she said "No. That's life, you'll figure it out." So insensitive and rude, don't take this class ever.
I overall really liked Professor Maher. The class was mostly lecturing, but I also thought it was interesting and captivating. There are pop quizzes, but they are open internet so do with that what you will. The midterm and final are open note so neither are too bad. The one bad thing is attendance is required so make sure to be there.
Professor is legit so funny. The readings are long and you have around two to do every class period. There are "pop" quizzes given, but are easy if you read. You really have to pay attention in this class. DO THE READINGS or read a summary at least. Absolutely no electronics allowed. Very interesting info every class period, I liked the material.
no thank you never again she is not for me
She's the worst
Professor Maher's G225 class is engaging and rewarding if you put in the work. Attendance is a must, but the lectures are fun and insightful. Paired with the textbook, Unstuck ai proved helpful for exam prep. Overall, an enjoyable and challenging course.
My 2nd class with Jen and I loved it! She's very funny, engaging, and knowledgable about course topics. Attendance and doing the readings are crucial--quizzes and exams are a breeze if you do the reading. If you're really interested in gender studies and not just taking the class for a gen ed, take a class with Jen.
Very opinionated would judge me and is quite actually an awful teacher.
Prof. Maher is an exceedingly cold person who shouldn't teach. The 3rd week of freshman year, my college-aged sister was tragically killed in a skiing accident. During my two weeks at home for the funeral and wake, I missed all IU classes and pop quizzes in her class. Every other IU prof was great. She gave me 0 for every class/quiz. Run from her.
She was rude.
