I am taking the online class and professor May understands that not everyone can make it to each lectures and labs on the time whenever is it given in live so she records each lectures and post them online. Her TA runs the labs and he is super helpful and also very nice! He and also professor May is willing to help you out anytime. I recommend!
It takes very little work outside of class to get an A in this course. Lectures are mandatory because of poppers, but she makes them so interesting. Her style of teaching is very natural and comedic and flows well. She is easy to follow along with and is very personable/approachable if you need additional help (in person or via email).
She know what she is talking about. I personally would like it better if she would stick to the script, but I was able to handle her adaptations to the class. You can tell she likes math a lot. She is available for tutoring a least once a week. My only complain is that she does poppers fast and lectures fast and I sometimes fall behind and get lost
This class is really easy to pass. She is a funny professor and gets to the point even though she goes of topic sometimes she makes the class engaging. You really do not use the textbook. You will only have to use it sometimes for homework assignments but, that's all.
Math 1314 was super easy with Prof. May. She's absolutely hilarious and lecture wise, she explains everything thoroughly. Attendance is mandatory for poppers but they're also easy! There's 2 homeworks due every week, along with a quiz but if you go to class, they're basically the same as working the notes. I would definitely take this class again!
Her lectures are organized, exam 4 was easy , exam 3 was the hardest and exam , she mails upcoming deadlines and gives nice advice through nails. Yes
She is great! She kept the environment in the classroom fun and enthusiastic. Although the class had more than 200 student's, she was always open to any questions anyone had about the material that was being covered. She is also quick when it comes to email's. I would definitely recommend! Hilarious. Fun. Awesome.
SHE'S MY ABSOLUTE FAVE!!!!!!! I Aced her class and she was never boring or a drag! Always smiling, very sarcastic but funny and very accessible !
Fantastic teacher. Although business calc is a complete joke she never stopped being energetic or sarcastic towards her students. Attendance is mandatory, but if you show up you will learn the material. Tests are very easy. Never got below 105 on any of them.
She is fun, funny, and makes the whole course easy to understand, do your homework, quizzes (you get to up to 20 times), Exam Practices (also up to 20 times), If you come in overly confident, and skip a few HW, Quizzes (drops 1), you will not get an A, like me.... but if you do all the required work, and try the quizzes and tests, you will do well!
Took her for a winter mini session of Cal 1 and at first hated attending online class so often, but she's so funny and easy to understand. She can be bit fast, but she provides every single resource you could ever want and is almost always available to help. I love Mama May!!!
Mrs. May is quirky, honest, and approachable. She takes the time to clearly teach each lesson/ concept. Easy class
She is really great at explaining things in a way you can understand. She is quick but that is nice because she covers everything which needs to be covered in class. She doesn't mess around (no BS type of teacher), which I appreciated. She is entertaining in class which made it fun. Material (HW, Quizzes, Tests) is standardized across classes.
Miss May!! Has the hottest voice ever. Mind she good in person too, id definitely wife. Onto math. Math is standard stuff, she teaches it well. sometimes she hit you with a corny joke out of nowhere. Sometimes she tells you about her granola breakfast, sometimes she takes the derivative of something. I'd take again.
I loved this class! She is very clear on how to do a problem. There was a lot of homework but they were fairly easy and she was available to help at CASA or her office. She was funny, sassy, and she could be intimidating because she is not afraid to call students out. There was extra credit if you did the practice tests. 4 tests+final. Good Luck!
Mini may semester. Easy class.
I took this class as a summer mini. There were video lectures for grouped sections, along with respective quizzes (15) that were easy 100s. 90% of your grade comes from the three exams. The latter two are in person and worth 35% each, but they're easy if you do the reviews. May also curves if you do the reviews. No other EC. I ended up with a 103.
This was the hardest and most time-consuming class I have ever taken. Each week we have at least 2 quizzes, EMCF homework, written homework, lab questions, popper questions, and discussion board due. If you are not a math mathematician this class will be extremely stressful for you. The class goes at a very fast pace as well.
I took Calculus Online and this was the only professor offered. I would've have taken someone else if there was someone else. It's an online class so all the lectures are online. Professor May does not give good feedback and she randomly talks about her personal life unnecessarily. I only took her class because I wanted my math course to be online
Considering that STATS is not for everybody, she's an amazing teacher. She knows how to explain material so that you can easily understand it. However, don't expect to be able to ask a lot of questions because she gets annoyed easily. Attendance is taken through poppers & most of the material is online.
First of all, I was very annoyed at the fact that class was an hour and a half five days a week for a four hour course. There was also a lot of conflict in policy between her and the TA, although I suppose that can't be held against her. The class overall was just very messy and many of the students struggled to get by.
If math is your thing then you should definitely take it online since she provides you with all the notes and all the things you need to be successful. I recommend this class for everyone
This was my second time taking statistics, and I am so GLAD i took it with professor May. She made the material very understandable. You do have to come to class, and pay attention or else this class will be difficult. Blank notes are all in CASA, and she also organizes it very well, so you know whats due next. GOOFY as heck
I would recommend taking this professor online ONLY if you have knowledge of Cal 1. This course is heavy on the workload (poppers, EMCF, HW, quizzes, etc.). The tests had similar questions from quizzes and class problems. She is nice and explains the problems until you understand them; also helps with HW problems.
Best professor I've had at UH so far. She is funny, is very knowledgeable on what she's teaching, and teaches in an effort to be most efficient without wasting the time of her students. There are poppers that must be completed in class everyday, so make sure to come to class. Highly recommend her class for statistics!
May is a great teacher, given that cal is a decently hard class, she is pretty great at putting things in layman's terms. The course is a bit overbearing with all of the assignments to do each week, however constantly doing these small problems allows you to have little studying to do when the test comes around. She gives lots of extra credit.
She has a great sense of humor, and can be really sarcastic at times. Her lectures are fun to be in. Attendance is only mandatory for poppers but you can learn everything from the online textbook.
Professor May is great! Make sure you show up, follow directions and don't ask silly questions(that really bothers her). I'm awful at math and made a B and almost made an A. People complain about her but it's college so she expects you to be at a certain level of maturity and gets annoyed with silly things. Also, she will make you laugh!
If you go and pay attention then great. Her attendance is not mandatory but but they have poppers which are taken for attendance and counts for a grade. Kinda scary to ask questions if she just repeated it.
She really is a fun professor that keeps you engaged throughout the entire lecture. She is funny and great at teaching the material. She lets you know what each test will be like and gives sufficient material to help you study. All in all, definitely take Ms. May, she's awesome.
She is hilarious. Her lectures really did not help with the weekly quizzes and homework but it was still an easy class. I don't like how she does her poppers because as we are writing notes, she would secretly write them on the board or something. Which I really think is unfair for those that take notes. Easy class because of extra credit. Easy A
So far, calculus has probably been the hardest subject I've taken but May was a huge reason why I passed with a decent grade. Her online class could be beneficial for some but make it harder for others to focus and I was kind of in the middle. Her lectures, however, were extremely helpful and she's great at thoroughly explaining concepts.
She's condescending and rude. Also ignores messages. I've had better professors. My Pre Cal professor made me love calculus, but this one made me hate it again. Will be taking Cal 2 with someone else, anyone else.
She's super funny so her lectures are not too boring. She teaches really well and it was easy to get an A in the class.
I cannot understand how any review given to this LECTURER can be anything higher than poor. I genuinely believe that she does not care how well students do. She is rude, condescending and I have yet to feel prepared for any test after using her as a study resource. The convenience of having an online course is not worth it.
No point in taking it online because if you dont show up for her "lecture" at 6:30 P FREAKING M opening them for later is impossible. So no poppers, and no help from her. PLUS the inconvenience of trying to show up. And don't worry about missing anything important because she cant teach lol.
The best part about this course is that if you do the practice test, and get 100, you automatically get 10 points extra credit on your exam. She is hilarious. Although, she is not your grader for the course, but she makes the class bareable. It is not as hard as people put it up to be just because it is a "stats" class. She is a great professor. Ez
DO NOT take this class online. First off, I love online classes, but I would have rather taken the 8am or better yet at HCC if I knew how terrible it was going to be. Class isn't "mandatory" but it might as freaking well be. You HAVE to attend 4 online sessions per wk that average about 2 hours each and thats just lecture. absolutely ridiculous
Always available if you have questions! If you do the bare minimum theres no reason that youll receive lower than a B. She gives a ton of hints for tests in her lectures and more practice problems than any other calc teacher. Many of my friends who took different teachers used my materials for their tests. Very caring!
One of the easiest math classes I've taken! She lets you know exactly what is going to be on the exam so there are no surprises. Always accessible outside of class and is very willing to help you. If you put in the work theres no reason not to make an A. I would totally take her again!!!
Ms. May is the best professor!! she simplifies everything and doesn't mess with any memorization. she teaches you ticks so you can be the laziest math student since she knows you already are. Poppers daily after week 3, usual math homework and quizzes required by the department.
Professor May teaches well and tells you what you need to know. However, she is passive aggressive. Shes not respectful of students. She gets irritated with us for not asking questions, but when you do ask a question she snaps at you. I asked her 2 questions the whole semester and both times she had a minor hissy fit in front of 100 people.
She's hilarious. Yes she does get irritated at some questions but honestly I was getting irritated with the same questions. She would say something and then not even 1 min later someone would ask a question that she had just answered. She will teach you handy tricks and tells you what's on the exams. Also the practice tests are great for bonus.
After being out of college for more than a few years, she was not a great choice to take due to her fast pace teaching. She is a good professor and if you're straight out of HS or are already a student you might like her. If you don't know the material going in, you basically have to teach yourself outside of the classes.
Professor May lectures super fast. She skips steps assuming that students know what they were supposed to do at that step. When asked how she got that answer, she throws a fit but goes back and shows her work. Her attitude is passive aggressive towards students on a bad night. She cares for students; the TA(Kazem) I had was TERRIBLE.
She lectures super fast without explaining what she's teaching. Hates explaining answers and expects you to already know how to solve problems when you walk into the class. I won't be taking her for future math subjects. If you don't understand how to do math at the drop of a hat, find a different professor.
Ms. May was sent from heaven to bless UH. This is my second class with her and like the first, I will definitely get the grade I want. I agree she can go fast but if you ever have a question shes available. However, she will become snappy if its obvious you dont care (dont take notes, show up late). Best math professor Ive ever had
I love Ms. May. I took her for PreCalc, as well. I am a firm believer in working for what you get - if you dont work and just expect As to come because thats what happened in HS, you are mistaken. Also, if you try to build your tower on pillars of sand, it will get blown away. Have a strong understanding in algebra - Ms. May is a good one!
This professor rarely explains what she is lecturing, and is very passive aggressive toward those who ask her to further explain something. She rushes through the lectures due to "lack of time" but makes time for off topic conversation. She also has a tendency to hold the class late, regularly forcing students to be late to their next classes.
About as hard as you would expect precal to be, which isn't very hard. She is freaking hilarious.
Amazing ,she delivers the necessary tools for you to pass and its up to you to take advantage of it .
First off this lady's lectures are hilarious. Really easy to stay engaged. Don't ask questions you think might be stupid unless it's during her office hours. Online HW and quizzes along with in class poppers make up 33% of your grade. Tests are wayyyy easier than the homeworks and quizzes. If you can study well by yourself, this is a guaranteed A+.
Quite a few Chuck Norris jokes if that's what you're in to. She teaches pretty quickly and often leaves chunks of the class behind. Very petty lady- don't get on her bad side. Overall, pretty decent. Do your work and show up to class and you shouldn't have any issues.
Professor May is very rude and aggressive. She does not respect her students all and embarasses you in front of the whole class for asking a question. She made me nervous to ask anything and I never wanted to go to her office hours because shes just mean. Take someone else. Shes not worth it
Professor May is good at explaining concepts sometimes, but isn't always thorough. She expects you to have basic knowledge and basic understanding of concepts which isn't always realistic. She can be quite snobby and makes a lot of smart remarks that strays her students away from asking questions. Overall, this class was okay, not my favorite prof.
I feel like this class is easy if you've taken pre-cal before. She really dumbs the material down, and has funny stories for some concepts that'll make it easier to remember. 10/10 recommend
Horrible Professor. I'm a straight A student in Math and I failed her class. Completely ruined my gpa, I'd HIGHLY recommend you take someone else. She gives so much work that you won't have any time to study for your other classes, and on top of it all she's condescending and rude towards students.
Professor May offered so many resources and opportunities that it was kind of impossible to fail, unless you arent putting in ANY work. Be prepared to work hard but coming out a better math student! 2 quizzes & 1-2 hw assignments a week. Surprisingly she was really rude when asked questions, I suggest going to office hours shes nicer.
Best math professor ive taken. Lectures are clear and engaging. Theres a lot of quizzes and homeworks but its managable. Her reviews are super similar to the exams. Shes available outside of class and is always willing to help. If you dont do well its because you didnt put in any effort, she wont work harder than you.
I loved having Ms May! Lectures are clear and offers many examples. GO TO CLASS THE DAY SHE DOES THE EXAM REVIEWS!!! She is very helpful and offers many resources outside of class for tutoring. Poppers are really really easy. she is funny and if you have her early in the morning she isnt cranky or anything so it motivates you to stay up.
For online CALC 1 (winter mini) : Mrs May is hands down the best teacher for Calc. Hilarious, witty and more importantly, knows what she talks about. Some lectures are required, but GO TO THE EXAM REVIEW SESSIONS. She gives really great advice on what to study for the test ("hint hint"). Work and persistence will be needed in this course. Great Fun
Very bouncy and tries to be Ms. Relatable. "Oh im so random hahaha, i LOVE cAFfeInE". Class has mostly busywork but It's not too bad. Teacher yells at students a lot to get their attention and is very petty. Her teaching really isn't that bad, but if you are looking for the "complete package" of a teacher, this ain't it chief.
Jennifer May is the WORST professor that I have ever encountered. I am taking her class online and she has been horrible so far. She is inconsiderate, doesn't care that we have other classes to study for, and other assignments to do besides her's, she assigns roughly 8-10 assignments weekly and 4 sessions weekly, from 7-8, even if theres an exam.
Professor May is extremely unprofessional. I've never had a professor that I would describe as disrespectful but there have been a few times that she has been to her students, and in front of the whole class. She has a way of belittling anyone who asks her a question over what she's lecturing. Passive aggressiveness gets old. Wouldn't recommend.
The fact that there is an online math class for Calculus is honestly a blessing in disguise. You get time to actually work on your poppers unlike face-to-face lectures that require you to answer within a few minutes for attendance. All of the assigned work she gives is actually set by the department and all profs have the same work load soooo.....
Easily the best LECTURER in the math department. Teaches it extremely clearly and avoids extra info you won't need. This is a freshman college class, so the poor reviews are because: they got bad grade, May called them out for not paying attention, or they didn't bother reading before lecture and expect her to spoonfeed it to them in lecture. 10/10
Professor May is one of the best professors i've ever had ! She is very good at teaching new material and has very engaging lectures. She also does lots of examples in class that helps build your knowledge on the material. TAKE HER IF YOU CAN ! She's amazing !
May is good at lecturing, but the homework is a heavy load. Instead of teaching, having one homework, and then expecting students to study on their own, everyone is forced to do multiple homeworks and quizzes over the same concept. For those who slack this mandatory work is good, but if you have good study skills expect to be annoyed.
She is one of the funniest professors I've ever taken. It's nice having a laugh in one of your more difficult classes. Her lectures are very clear and perfect for grasping a concept as long as you go to class. Before every exam, she has a very thorough review in class, as long as you come prepared with questions. Great teacher!
Prof. May is a really good professor. She teaches in a clear manner and gives plenty of examples for problems you might run across on homework, tests, or quizzes. She gives you the popper questions ahead of time so make sure you do them. She is a little rude if you ask questions, but she knows how to teach in a logical manner.
She pretty much tells you whats gonna be on the test question for question. Im not a huge fan of her personality, but its an easy A!
Im honestly surprised her rate isnt higher. Shes a very pleasant person. Made the course as simple as possible. Though the work is heavy, I believe its for us to practice and become comfortable with the concepts. She was extremely helpful, worked through reviews, and stated what would be on exams. Do the work, easy A.
Calculus is hard in general, but May made it enjoyable (and this is from someone who didn't like math entering the course). Her test reviews were awesome and she'd straight up tell us what was going to be on the exam. Took huge weight off my shoulders! She's sassy, but she wants her students to succeed and learn math.
Worst teacher I have ever had, over an hour online required lecture daily, I learned nothing and her TA was one of the worst as well. I have taken several online math courses, and prefer online courses in general, I have never seen a teacher understand so little how to format a math course.
You can ignore pretty much any negative review here. Freshman have an expectation that they won't need to study in a college level math course, and blame the professor when they fail. Professor May is a great lecturer, and online math courses are great because you can rewind and pause when you need more time. Took a W with West, getting an A now.
Lots of work but its for your benefit. Cal1 is difficult for most and to do your best follow her advice! She tells you exactly what type of problems will be on your exams. Her TA is okay. Her personality is spunky and she is very sweet. DO NOT BE RUDE or she will put you in your place. To do well in this class, stay organized and follow her advice.
As someone who did a little college, went military, and went back this was one of the better professors. Didn't realize how much I forgot but stayed for her after class sessions and she was incredibly helpful (and more friendly!) with any questions I had. Seems to really care that you do well as long as you put forth the effort.
Calculus 1 was an OK class, you definitely have to keep yourself on track as it's an online course. Falling behind will be difficult to catch up with the material. Professor May is a great professor at explaining the concepts and information, she prepares you for the exams very well. Take her if you have taken online classes before.
If you struggle with math then take this professor. Ms. May is such a great teacher. She explains the material well, and really wants her students to actually learn. She goes the extra mile to help us. She made videos at 3 am and posted them for us to go back and watch them which she didn't have to do at all. She breaks down the tests very well.
Professor May is such a great teacher. Topics can be really hard to understand at first, but if you actually do the homework and quizzes it will help. Bring questions to ask her in class and she can gladly help. Actually do the homework!! I can not stress that enough. GO TO HER REVIEW DAYS!!! If you're gonna some days, go on the review days.
I had Professor May for online Math 1431. Attendance is not mandatory because she records her live lectures, however there are poppers in the vid so you have to watch. She is unclear sometimes and would over-explain things. The reason why I wouldn't recommend her is that if you ask a question during lecture, she would be rude and not so helpful
An unnecessarily hard professor. Does poppers different than others math teachers and picks questions randomly from the popper questions she gives the week before. Does poppers through out the class. If the class is small she makes all students move up seats until every seat in the front is filled up. Definitely do not recommend taking her at all.
take someone else. She doesn't explain very good. She is super rude if you ask a simple question. tests are hard, 2 lab quizes by TA (5 quest), 2 quizes and 1 written hw which you scan and upload every week,
l love math but the crazy amount of work you do is for students who have a lot of free time, taking easy classes, and don't work. This class is just too much I almost feel like I am actually drowning. Every time I have to take her test, I just don't feel prepared. Her lectures can be confusing and she expects you to know everything.
I dont understand why her reviews are so good. Dont get fooled by it. the worst prof i had so far. she is rude and doesn't explain good, expects you to know stuff. People who took someone else get good grades on the tests but that cant happen with May.
This prof was not helpful at all, students would ask questions during a review session and she would reply with something snarky and not even answer it. Thank god I took calculus in HS or else I would have never been able to learn with her, the TA taught me more than she did.
ZOOMS through lectures and often makes the quizzes and tests different from what she teaches on the notes. Don't just study the notes. Even though that really should be all you need, she adds questions to the quizzes that aren't on the notes for some unknown reason. Also tries to be funny but is pretty corny
She goes super fast in her lectures. Shows extremely easy examples in reviews and lectures, but puts questions that are wayy harder on tests and quizzes. She also has an attitude and unsuccessfully tries to be funny. I don't feel like I learn a lot in her class. She uses short-cuts a lot, which are hard to retain and I don't usually remember them.
Ms. May is a kind woman but not my ideal preference for an instructor. She works extraordinarily hard and tries to be as diligent as possible which are great qualities. Personally, I didn't feel very welcome to talk because every time I said something, it felt like I was being attacked or reprimanded. That was a real let down. Otherwise it was okay
Professor May is one of the best professors I have ever had. This class will require work and practice but as long as you do the homework, quizzes, and show up to class and ask questions you will be fine. She is very funny and she has made herself accessible outside of class due to the shift to online learning. I highly recommend Professor May!
Shes ok. If you can take somebody else, you probably should, especially if you have not taken calculus in high school. She can be rude, assigns a ton of homework, a ton of poppers and lab quizzes, WRITTEN assignments for an online class, and goes fast in lecture videos. Tests are relatively easy, and class was overall okay, but still sorta eh.
Make sure to do the quizzes before class time so that you can ask her question right there and there. Love her way of teaching. Easy A ;)
Dr. May is an excellent math teacher who clearly explains examples while moving fast at the same time. She leaves time at the end of units for questions and prepares you well for tests. I have taken her classes twice now and would continue to take her classes. You don't need the textbook but examples help on tests.
She often has a habit of not showing all her work but if you watch her lecture videos and you don't understand something, I recommend pausing the video and work out the problem until you're able to understand it. She often gave out answers for poppers and I love that about the class.
Im an engineering major so precal was pretty easy for me. You definitely have to put in the work tho, but it was by far one of the easiest classes I have taken at UH. There is a lot of homework tho and quizzes. If you make a good schedule for yourself and study accordingly you should pass.
I already took Calc one, from my pov it was really easy, but the class will be difficult for those that are fresh. Very quiz-heavy, rushy with lectures/notes. Good for covering test material and she also does review nights before tests. Overall, not bad of a professor. Just be on top of your work and you should be fine!
She teaches Calc 1 in a way which allows me as a student to understand what she's teaching. She has good notes for us to follow and plenty of practice/quizzes which helped substantially when it was time to take the tests. Overall a great professor to take for any math classes.
Shes really funny and sweet. Calc tests were kinda hard, but just go over the material and you will be fine.
I really enjoyed Prof. May's class. She moved fast but she also gives time to catch up and ask questions. Make sure to do the practice tests because those can be added for bonus points on your exams! Plus, they're good practice for the test. Her lectures were fun and enjoyable too! You don't really use the textbook, but they still make you buy it.
I had her for precal, the class was asynchronous which made the class a bit tough, material on quiz/ homework was usually harder than tests, kinda difficult but if u do well on tests your good, I was failing all year, until the last final, passed the class with a B
Professor May was a good Professor for Calculus 1. Although she did go really fast with her lectures, she helped me with preparing well for the tests. I aced all of my exams thanks to her, including the final exam. So take her.
An A if you put in the work. a lot of practice tests are online (very similar to tests) and they tell you what the free responses will be. The homework is helpful as well as the quizzes so I would recommend doing them. They drop the lowest homework and quizzes. I will say the workload is a pain in the butt though.
If you are someone who are good at math, you can notice that she often makes mistakes during her lecture (which will confuse you a lot). She is also not good at clarifying the materials. I recommend you guys to take someone else if math is not your strength. Good luck.
WOULD NOT RECOMMEND HER!!! Too much homework in this class, her lecture fails to teach you the basics. She uses her own shortcuts to solve questions without explaining. 4-5 out of the 7 days of the week there's something due in this class. Attendance is "not mandatory" but there is a pop quiz in her lectures...excuse me??
Whatever you do, don’t take her for pre calculus. Her lectures are terrible and fail to teach you. She records her lectures in the middle of the night and she messes up or will skip ahead which will leave you confused. She is also rude if you ask her questions and fails to help. I had to drop this class !
WORST MATH PROF I HAVE EVER HAD!! math is not my strongest subject but man i NEVER had such a low grade in my life. she goes really fast and does not explain clearly . I had to teach myself with youtube videos If you struggle in math PLEASE PLEASE take another prof (nothing against her she seems nice but just not my choice of instructor)
Amazing professor. I dont know if the bad reviews were left recently, but she is awesome. She made and record her own review that was closer to the actual test than the official CASA test review, she made recordings of not just class, but tutor like videos. I didnt go to class very often, but without Dr. May, I would have been in hot water..
I would take literally anyone else. If you HAVE to take her (she was the only online option this semester), you'll get by, but beware that she's a headache to have to deal with. Lectures USUALLY cover what you need to know (she skips steps), but her personality is ugly. Snarky, rude to students who ask questions. Generally unpleasant to deal with.
If you want to teach yourself this is a perfect class! Her lectures were not the best and made many mistakes while teaching, also never completed the examples in the lectures. Very snarky and rude toward students. Would NOT recommend at all!!!
Basically like all other math teachers. Her lecture videos need to be watched to understand what's going on in class and everything is graded through CASA. There's quite a lot of classwork to do every week but it's a super easy class as long as you keep up with the assignments and her.
Her recorded lectures are a hit or miss. Sometimes they're on point, sometimes she skips steps and you gotta figure it out alone. She's rude if you ask for help and she feels it's something you should already know. Not hard to get an A in her class if she's your only option, but her attitude sucks. If you can choose someone else, I'd suggest you do
Best professor for cal 2 and for all math. Way way way way better than that melhat professor.
Great math professor. She is super helpful and always answers any questions you ask.
Professor May moved quick in Calc 2 like in Calc 1. Only difference is that the material in Calc 2 is much more difficult. Doesn't often fully work out practice problems in lecture. She can be very helpful with students. The practice tests help with extra credit and practice. The material is hard so make sure to really study for exams.
Took Pre-calc and have so many assignments and work. Way too many hours that is asked to put in this class, but very clear reviews for test and pretty ok extra credit. The material is decently easy if you took the class in high school so it not so bad.
Absolutely fantastic. I took this class in the summer so it was very escalated, and as someone who's not particularly great at math, Ms. May was amazing. She doesn't just stick with the standard course content. She gives honest advice and tips on how to actually make sense of everything and just offers so much help. 10/10 would DEFINITLY recommend.
If you want to take a course with a professor who will teach you the material and be understanding of students who struggle with math, this is not the course for you. Her teaching style is very fast-paced and the courses calendar will make anyone who needs more time to understand the concept overwhelmed. Please take another professor if you can.
She is just meh. She is very rude and snarky towards anyone who asks questions no matter how simple. She goes through her lectures very fast and is sometimes hard to follow, even as someone who had taken the same course prior in high school. She isn't the worst but definitely not the best. Also be prepared for A LOT of homework and quizzes.
Goes a bit fast on Cal 2 so you really need to know basically everything in Cal 1. She does try to help and have office hours to ask questions. Even gives credit when you know what to do but got the answer wrong. Very fair grading overall
Took this course in person + have heard awful reviews from online courses. I loved her. I am good at math so work was relatively easy. I enjoyed the way she spoke during lectures. Is very attentive to teams as well + is willing to answer questions. Tests came with a review similar to the test. She sets you up to pass if you follow her guidelines.
Fairly easy, I barely studied and got an A-. Class is test heavy 3 tests 16% each and the final 22%. Extra credit for each test (5 each for regular and 10 for final). The professor cares about her students but she does get annoyed often. Usually, around 2-3 assignments a week, and she is very accessible if you need help from her.
Really easy. She always checks teams and answers questions. She's fun but can be a bit sarcastic and gets upset when students ask questions that she thinks they should already know. Aside from this, she's really good at teaching and very helpful. Test reviews are extremely helpful. Extra credit opportunities. 2 lowest hmwk 2 lowest quizzes dropped.
I really liked this professor, although she can be entertaining at times and is pretty great at explaining the material, she can be stern and will not budge for special adjustments. She does teach pretty fast sometimes but she genuinely cares about her students doing good and works on trying to make the best outcome there can be.
I really liked Professor May, but she does go pretty fast and expects you to have a lot of background knowledge. A little passive agressive.
Professor May was a good math professor and she is very good at working problems and getting straight to the point. You will be fine just stay on top of things, ask questions and she does a lot of good office hours so attend those.
Dr. May tends to talk down to her students and is pretty passive aggressive. In lecture, she'll skip steps, expecting for you to have as much background info as her. If you try to ask a question during lecture, she'll either say that she doesn't answer "number crunching" questions or to come to her office hours. Choose someone else if you can.
She teaches the most basic stuff in class and most of the time you have to spend hours doing your own research on Youtube learning how to do the homework. Youtube has taught me more than she has.
Prof. May does not seem to have any patience or tolerance toward her students. She expects everyone to know everything at all times, especially during lectures. She is rude and kind of snarky sometimes with her remarks so be careful when you ask her a question. Her notes and course setup are not good either, have to take a lot of impromptu notes.
Easily the worst professor in the math department. She explains nothing throughout her pre-recorded lectures, she doesn't go over certain things and calls it number crunching. If we don't understand something she tells us to refer to the textbook which is through CCS the most poorly designed website ever. I feel so helpless in this online class!
If you are in a position where you have to choose between Professor May and another professor at UH, Please do yourself a favor and just go with another professor. She is not only rude but very unhelpful, especially considering this is an online class. It's simply not worth throwing away your grade and GPA by taking her for Calculus. Go with Almus
Homework-heavy class, expect most nights of your semester to have at least some math homework mixed in. Never an off day in class, she is always lecturing at her fastest pace, and if you fall behind, good luck catching up because you will end up having to teach yourself. Can't recommend this class but if you have to take it then choose someone else
Professor May is the best math professor I ever had! She gave me back my passion for Math. If I can get an A- after being out of school for 3 years she can teach anyone! Yes she is a little snarky with her comments but she does care for her students and will help during office hours. Will take again for Cal 2!
Dr. May was so great this year, yes her lectures are fast paced but she makes them interesting and useful and she will stop and answer a question for you. She greatly helps students with videos and creates study guides for them and there is a running discussion page where you can ask for help. This class truly is what you make of it though.
Professor May is amazing. She shows each step to solve the question in the lecture, except for those obvious ones. She even went over the review for each mid-term exam and gave a clear understanding of how MC and FRQ work. She definitely makes Cal 2 easy to learn, even though I never had her for Cal 1.
Overall precalc was a very easy course, although Professor May was quite average at teaching if not just plain bad, she tries to simplify things and expects you to know certain things already and can make you seem dumb for asking. She made a lot of funny jokes during her lectures but can sometimes be offensive. Lots of extra credit though!!
great prof., barring her passive-aggressiveness and unwillingness to answer questions. had her online for calc and did great. passionate about math, good lectures. workload is moderate leaning heavy: expect 2-4 ccs quizzes and a written hw each week. the tests are definitely easier than the quizzes. try not to bug her too much and you're golden.
Professor may is a decent professor. my only problem is she goes over content in the simplest way using easy problems during class, and then the homework is way harder. Makes doing homework a nightmare. Im the reason I passed this class.
Dr. May is an Okay professor, but a lot of the time, she expects you to know what she is talking about since she assumes you went home and looked over the next lesson. There were times I would have to rely on the Lab TAs for help and more times I would rely on Youtube for help as well.
really great prof ! really got you to understand whatever she was teaching and .occasionally goes over and tells you about questions that are going to be on the test. heavy workload! expect 1 hw (harder than quizzes and tests), 2 online quizzes, and lab quiz every week. does give out like 5 pts of extra credit per test and replaces lowest w/final.
This professor was incredibly disrespectful and condescending. Any clarification questions will be met with a snarky remark. She gives very VAGUE assignment instructions. You will have no idea how you will be graded. Avoid at all costs. *Note: I took her for MATH 3379 (not 2414), but this was not a selectable option*
Would rather gossip and elaborate on her pitiful personal life than do any form of teaching whatsoever. Class was completely incomprehensible and tests were out of control on difficulty and nothing like her so - called teaching. Very rude and condescending if questioned whatsoever . Stay far far away. She has no business being any kind of teacher.
I loved Prof May's class! She keeps it real and really motivated me to stay consistent throughout the semester. Doing calc online was hard but her along with Navid (the TA) did a great job at getting us through the course. I do agree that she was a bit rude at times, but also undertsand her not wanting to answer "unnecessary" questions cuz of time.
May is quite snarky (don't be late to class). She is, however, a great Calc 2 teacher. If you apply yourself in the class and have a solid base, you will do good and learn a lot. Insane HW/quiz load but May can't do anything about it, that's on the math department :( She responded quickly to my emails and at her core wants students to succeed :)
Attendance is 5% of your grade and is done every lecture through poppers. She gives out weekly quizzes and written homework. Your TA can help you out a lot if they care. Attendance in lab is done with a quiz every Friday. Overall she cares about her students a lot and is available outside of class to help, especially during her office hours.
Dr. May is the best! I have had her for 2 semesters now and she is absolutely wonderful. Alot of people say that she gets triggered easily, which she does, but as a professor she is great. Go to her office hours and get to know her and she will be your best friend. Math at UH in general is a lot of work, but its good practice.
You'll get the same grading criteria with all uh prof. and extra cred. but her weekly lab quiz long(she changes days week of exam),hws are longer than other prof., and poppers are out of order at times. Her reviews are so long and count towards grade. Drops 2 quizzes, 1 hw, and 15% poppers. Can be rude/snarky or dismissive. Recom: take someone else
I don't really know what to say except save your mental health and GPA and do not take this professor. The class was very unorganized and the professor was not helpful at all. Office hours are not helpful at all. You are basically on your own in this class.
Her class reminds me of the show "The Good Place". She says you'll be fine then ruin your grade. She says shes always there to help but then belittles you for asking questions. She gave me trust issues. The class was so unorganized. This material is so easy but her unclear expectations lowered my grade and confidence. Never.Again.
She's a good teacher and people seem absolutely upset because she doesn't like students asking too many questions in class. You can ask questions as long as you wait for her to let you speak. When you are confused, go to office hours, don't ask during lecture. If her teaching is not for you, you should go to recitation, the TA's will help you.
Precalc was a easy course however she expects you to know things and her lectures were simply confusing and boring. The class itself had lots of homework but the exams were super easy! I would not take her again for a harder math course though.
She is yelling at her students on day one for asking questions. Be ready for the rudest professor you've ever seen. Wouldn't take this professor unless it's the last option. Be ready for the worst professor on the campus. She is the reason people have stopped wanting to enroll at UH.
Not great at teaching honestly, tries to be funny but isn't, take any other professor and you'll get better notes in class. She doesn't really seem like she knows what she's doing.
She's an oddball but she's great; her lectures are pretty engaging and she goes back over stuff when asked. The way she explained volume completely trumped my AP classroom explanations; I went from having no idea wtf volume was to being a master at it because of her :) We'll see how the semester unfolds.
She doesn't like when people ask questions in class. She has assignments due the week of your test that don't pertain to your test, taking time away from focusing on what will be tested. She overcomplicates simple concepts because she dislikes using formulas/tricks/ or anything relating to memorizing math. Take anyone but her. very bad TAs too.
With weekly Poppers to give your grade a little boost, the quizzes have 10 attempts and are pretty easy, and overall, the course load isn't that bad as long as you're paying attention to your Canvas. The exams are similar to the quizzes and review. All in all, she's not bad. Might be hard for those learning for the first time.
The course includes 2-3 weekly quizzes with 10 attempts and extensive written homework (extra credit is available). However, Professor May is extremely passive-aggressive, lacks humor, and is unaccommodating. I did not like May's teaching style nor did I like her as a person. I recommend taking this course with a different professor.
VERY VERY NOT CARING. May pretends to care but actually could care less about her students. Don't you dare ask silly questions because she will call you out and put you down making you not even want to participate anymore!! Choose any other professor for your own sake. The course itself is very easy but Professor May makes it very unenjoyable.
She is very energetic and cheerful during lectures and she goes back over stuff when asked. If you need extra help, go to office hours and she'll help you out. There are poppers in every class, which give your grade a little boost. The quizzes have 10 attempts and are pretty easy, and exams are pretty much the same as the practice test and review.
Great professor with great lectures online. Made the class easy to study for, as long as you kept up with lectures and the quizzes. Overall she provided plenty of resources to help you ace the exam as long as you kept up with your work. She had office hours often before lectures if you had any questions about the homework.
Dr. May can be a bit snarky, but she's a great Calc 2 professor. The workload is intense, but if you stay on top of it and use resources like unstuck AI, you can excel. Just don't be late to class!
She is such a sweet woman and an amazing professor. She makes sure everyone understands the lecture and doesn't shun questions. She makes the lectures fun and interactive. Attendance is required, but it's only 5% of grading. If you do miss lectures, you can still succeed because she posts the notes after class. She prepares you to do well in tests.
Very sarcastic and humorous sometimes. Attendance is SUPER important to her so you HAVE to show up to the lab and lecture. She is quite passive-aggressive when you ask questions in class though, it bothers her when you try to correct her work but she was right. Her office hours are fun and helpful. She has weekly hw and two quizzes due each week.
She is a pretty chill person but she gives so much homework throughout the week. I did not understand her lectures whatsoever and learned everything by myself to get decent grades. Precal is not hard itself but she made it SO COMPLICATED!! I just dont think her teaching style is for me.
Lots of quizzes!! The workload might be the same for all Calc classes but I suggest completing the quizzes a week before. She does attendance by quizzes on Canvas but they r easy. She might seem scary at 1st but I will say she's willing to answer any questions and help with any problems you can't figure out. The practice exams r like the real ones.
J May is a fire professor. She is the only calc teacher I have taken where I understand the curriculum. Just show up to her online lectures and participate and you'll be fine. Otherwise, don't take an online math course. Very kind teacher and honestly just wants company during her lectures. Explains everything very well.
I absolutely love this teacher, I ended with a 98 in the class, she is hands down one of the best pre calculus teacher ever. This was a really easy class, she makes videos of all her lectures if you missed class, quizzes are easy, I would advice doing the review materials she provides because it is the test, put in the work and you will succeed.
great at teaching certain topics but sometimes lectures felt rushed and confusing. although her teaching can be somewhat confusing, she makes up for it by giving hints about the upcoming tests and dedicating a full day for reviewing questions students upload
I thought may was great. She explained the concepts really well, was responsive to questions, and provided enough material to where, it I didn't understand something during class, I was able to work on it outside with resources she had provided.
Really nice and funny, sometimes talks fast so if you stop paying attention for just a second you can get lost She is pretty good at going over questions and reviews problems in class, exam reviews are basically what is one the tests. A lot of homework (in my opinion) but I liked her class
She's a great lecturer & breaks down concepts rlly well. The only time she would be visibly annoyed is when ppl asked questions over something she just explained. (Which is understandable.) My issue is w/ how the class is structured which isn't her fault. It felt chaotic at times.
Dr. May was a fantastic teacher who was funny and excellently taught calc 2. Show up for every lecture for attendance and for lab as well.
Dr May is good. Take her
its SO funny how this class requires participation as it is ASYNCHRONOUS. while her teaching style is good, i signed up for an asynchronous course where i could go at my own pace due to my busy schedule. we have attendance grades in live lectures which defeats the whole purpose of asynchronous learning. her course material is also badly organized.
She keeps deleting my rating but if your reading this don't take her shes horrible and will regret it.
I took her for the asynch precalc winter mini and I really liked the class. It was fast paced with a heavy workload, but if you dedicate time to studying, you should be fine. She held occasional online meetings where attendance was taken which was a bit annoying but not too bad. The lectures she provided were excellent and easy to understand.
Took her online; definitely regret this, she was extremely fast-paced, never reviewed for exams and had confusing lectures, maybe in person would have been different but definitely do not reccommend.
She is not good at teaching. be ready to learn everything from an outside source. She demands so much time to learn materials. On the first day of class she said "You better be ready to dedicate at least 3 hours a day to this class". Like bro, be foreal. Way too much workload to not even learn the information you need to pass the quizzes and exam
The in-person exams are nearly identical to the practice tests and hw review she gives you. There's also attendance questions but you can just watch the VOD to do them. You also have to do online quizzes and you get 10 attempts. (Pretty easy) This class is fast paced but if you do well on the practice tests and reviews you'll ace the exams.
At first she may seem rude or what not but trust me she wants her students to pass and understand every problem. Attendance was mandatory and exams very decent in difficulty. Homework's were long and quizzes were also long. But trust you'll get used to her but she teaches clearly and compared to my calc 3 professor I miss her ngl.
Very rude and arrogant. This class is supposed to be asynchronous, however, attendance quizzes and attendance are mandatory. She asks us to devote 3 hours to this class (outside lecture), which is difficult since we all have other commitments. I am sorry but if she has this much of an inflated self importance, she needs to be humbled.
Seriously have never had this much work for any class. She will bombard you with assignments every single day. I'm talking 3-5 a day. Expects students to dedicate all their time to her class. It's been such a headache I would not recommend to anyone. Especially if you have other hard classes/ a busy life.
I took pre-calculus with Dr.Almus and I will say I prefer Dr. Almus. Dr. Mays class is more unorganized and she expects us to watch her live-streamed lectures that will take at least 3 hrs a week. After like the second test I started watching her pre-recorded (significantly shorter) videos instead of the livestreams and got a better grade.
This course is supposed to be asynchronous but she still makes us come to teams or do alternate quizzes which was sooooo annoying. shes also pretty rude when you ask her questions but apart from that the exams are standardised, so she doenst make them just know the review (not practice test!) like the back of your hand then itll be super easy
What disrupts the potential for a productive environment is her inability to self-regulate. The comments she makes in class are inappropriate and she blurs the line of professionalism by constantly bringing up her personal life. She publicly assumed that I was in remedial geometry because my h.s. didn't include proof-writing in their curriculum.
Unless you're naturally bad at math or something, I don't see why you can't easily get an A in this class. The tests are identical to the quizzes/test reviews, so just doing the homework and taking notes from the videos is enough. Unless you struggle with math/calculus, the lab quizzes and poppers are really unnecessary.
Ms may is an awesome teacher for discrete math as she is very entertaining while also being very knowledgeable about the material. She doesn't test in casa, and she does not have a midterm or final exam just regular test over the lastest material. Her lectures are very engaging and wont make you fall asleep or be distracted easily.
Professor May (or how she tells you to call her: Ms. May) is the absolute best college instructor I've had. She is the sweetest lady, and she explains the Calc 2 problems really well. She will tell you what goes for the exams, and if you go to to office hours you have a guaranteed success in the class. Take her!
She is an average professor. She tries to help you. Her test reviews are exactly like the exam itself. While it feels good to go confident that you will get a good grade, I don't feel like I am being tested properly as I already know the questions. It would be better if she does a thorough review rather than focusing on exam questions only
She does not provide regular lecture notes and sometimes she comes to class and completes the session by writing her own notes from scratch. While it can be okay occasinally, it is so annoying when she applies it regularly. I wish I could print the blank lecture notes. My friends taking Calculus from Almus or Xhabli have excellent lecture notes.
She tries to be friendly but it feels so fake. I really didn't like her. Always blamed the department if a student complained about a homework or an online quiz. Skipped classes regularly and assigned videos to watch for her convenience not mine as she said. Assigned online office hours instead of in person many times. Shortly put avoid if you can.
Ms.Jennifer was a great professor she was very caring and was always there to offer support. although her class is hard she always made sure to be transparent about it. if you watch her lectures and study hard for the test you are sure to pass with an A
Terrible at math and was scared to take her because of these reviews, but she was amazing. She gives you every tool to succeed, lets you practice test questions multiple times, and genuinely encourages her students. Do NOT be deterred by these ratings. She cares and it shows! She only gets sassy when people ignore instructions lol. Highly recommend
I am being so for real when I tell you to not be discouraged by the bad reviews. Those simply do not catch on to her humor. As a Math major, I would choose Prof. May for ALL of my math courses if I could!! Attend all her lectures and you WILL be successful. She's very engaging and is clearly VERY knowledgable in her profession. The absolute best!!
Hardly went to lecture, but when I did, she was rude, callous at times, yet somewhat funny; She truly has “no filter.” I find her way of teaching the material to be a bit unorthodox at times, meaning she doesn't deliver explanations as explicitly as I thought she could. She does, however, will give students an insider on what will be on exams
I enjoyed having Calc 2 with her because I love a funny and lively professor. Calc 2 isn't terrible, just do the homeworks and quizzes on your own and you are set for the exams. Dr. May loves being able to help her students in class and she encourages her students to go into her office hours if additional help is needed. She is awesome for Calc 2!
She is okay, not the best but not the worst. Pros taking her is that she will tell you exactly what the questions in the exam are. So you can pull out a nighter to ace the exams. Cons taking her is that you just memorize stuff but don't go deep in understanding the concepts. I felt like she was mostly interested into prepping us for exams.
She is a decent professor. Pros: - Very good lecturer - Prepares us for the exams well - Extra credit on some exams - Funny Cons: - Tough grader IMO - Can be a bit rude - A lot of group assignments - Tends to treat the class like its high school (not in a good way) I would say she is the best option for MATH 2305 at UH, but overall she is decent.
