Met with her breifly. She was mean and scary. Avoid her if possible.

Interesting class. She's very willing to help or explain. The class is hard work, but very worthwhile.
She's brilliant, motivated and committed to the academic growth of students. The critical thinking skills one may gain in her classes are priceless.

Her class kicks my ass but I'm learning a lot. Definitely worth the challenge if you've got the time to commit to it.
stop complaining you sally's. Her course takes a ton of work and effort. IF you aren't doing well, you aren't working hard enough or putting forth the effort!!!
Excellent teacher. Cares about what she teaches and this is evident in learning with her. The high standards she sets are to be appreciated, because it means something when you are successful in her class.
excellent teacher. interesting class. reading, writing, and discussing. can be very challenging, but will open your mind and improve your academics in the long run. she truly cares about your learning and accepts a challenge or criticism. if you want a good challenge, good class.
Doesn't in the least care for truth or consistancy. I.E. tells the class at the beginning of semester that we won't argue theories that require us to believe in non-provable things. Then she adamantly defends theories that require you to believe in the non provable and expects you to believe them.
Warning: only take classes from her if you actually want to learn.
Classes have lots of writing. Quite difficult, but you do learn a lot if you can keep up with the work.
Hard, but awesome, learned a lot.
Very difficult class, but I learned a lot. If you can keep up and keep an open mind definitely take it. She wants to help you learn and is open to anything.
Did you people take the same closed minded "My way or the highway" indoctrinator of all that is BS.Awful, closed minded and literally makes you play silly games in class. Avoid her if you can.
She'll push you in class and on written work. She's very open to discussion outside of class as well. I'd recommend her to anyone serious about learning Philosophy. She knows her stuff and she's very provocative and interesting. Not bad for Iowa.
Prof. McCrickerd is the reason I minored in philosophy, she may seem like a hardcore **** when you have her class, but dammit, she makes you think and she makes you learn.
Plays favorites with the students. I wouldn't recommend her not even to watch my pet.
She does have you do a lot of reading, but otherwise, I don't think she asks too much. Plus she hosts the coffee and cookies get together, and how can dislike anyone who gives you cookies?
McCrickerd is one of the few professors I have found at Drake who teaches for the love of teaching and philosophy. Whatever it takes, she will try, along the way practicing what she preaches. Her students come first, which is rare on this campus.
Oh puhleeze, she was the most condescending professor on campus. Class was difficult but not unbearable. I just couldn't stand her attitude and her intellectual inconsistancy.
Expects a lot of her students but is an extremely nice person. She's unbelievably intelligent and well-spoken. Her classes are worth the effort.
Not nearly as intelligent as she thinks she is. Awful, bitter, and mean spirited. If your are prepared to worship at the altar of her divine countenance go ahead, otherwise run like hell and don't look back, you'll be much happier if you do.
Bored alum here. Aced all my logic-based philosophy classes, but failed her ethics class. Only class I've ever failed. Online discussion boards were worthless, and ironically she failed those who refused to post on principle that little worthwhile was discussed on the boards.
Ethics was by far the most difficult class I've experienced so far at Drake. It was so difficult that it was very frustrating at times. I do feel that I've learned so much more through taking the course! If you want a truly difficult class where you'll learn alot, take it. But if you're looking for an easy AOI, don't take Ethics.
Professor McCrickerd is an exceptionally dedicated educator with an effective pedagogical style. Her expertise in the field of ethics is unquestionable, as is her high but appropriate standards in what she expects from students. She is one of the best teachers I have ever been fortunate to take. Those that dissent are most likely poor students.
McCrickerd is the name for God on the lips and hearts of philosophy graduates!
She is one of the nicest most helpful people I've ever met. She even bakes cookies every thursady! Yes, her classes are challenging, and yes you will read alot, but it's totally worth it. All these people bad-mouthing her are just bitter because they didn't like the workload, and didn't want to let her help them.
Her classes are always VERY interesting... Jmc rocks! (tho she is kind of a hard grader)
One of the most biasest professors. Any argument that goes against her preconceived notions, she discounts with some sarcastic and degrading remark. I would only take her if you share all the same beliefs as her. If you don't, then no matter how hard you try in her class she'll punish you for it. One of the worst teachers at Drake.
McCrickerd was one of the most challenging teachers I've had at Drake - but there's no way you can justifiably attack her for not being helpful or being biased... Her class was one of the most rewarding I've taken at Drake.
A very hard teacher who demands alot of her students. The texts are complex an numerous. She is also very helpfull and is willing to take the time to go over anything that was not understood in a non biased way. She is also very understanding and willing to work with you over due dates or problems with assignments. A great teacher to have
She's super interesting and really fun!! I loved the class and I feel I learned so much! She had a fun interesting way of teaching and the class always felt too short. The reading is tough, as are the quizzes, BUT DON'T BE AFRAID OF HER!!!!! Ask for help!! She'll give it! That's why I loved her, plus the sarcastic humor is priceless!!
The most I've ever had to read in my life... She's nice, but she takes forever to get papers back. The grading is really hard and papers lack any feedback. It would be doubtful that you would get an A. OR even B for that matter...
Definitely 1 of the nicest profs around, be wary when u take her. Made the mistake of taking her class & a soc. class @ the same time. Bad choice. U MUST have more than ample time available to do the assignments b/cthere is a ridiculously huge amount of reading. She's very kind, but only take her if you have the time. I got a C& I'm a good student.
AVOID AT ALL COST!
The biggest regret of my college career was taking this class. It's chalked full of busy work, and and an illogical amount of reading. The teacher is helpful ONLY IF YOU ASK FOR HER HELP, so don't expect her to pull you aside if you're in trouble. Good luck if you need this class, but if you're looking for your ethics AOI, just do business law.
Contrary to what some would have you believe, she is not biased. JMc is an expert at playing the devil's advocate, and is willing to challenge any and all claims you might make. This was easily one of the most valuable courses I have taken. She expects a lot, but when did high standards become so terrible?
DO NOT take this class!! The required reading is extremely dense and the amount of work is completely unreasonable. Unless you want to do hw for this class for several hours a day you wil not get it all done. There are several assigments assigned at once throughout the entire semester. Lowest grade at Drake so far. Not worth the amount of work!
Her class was entirely way too intensive for an AOI. If you are very interested in philosophy, I would definitely recommend the class. Prepare for a lot of work and a lot of reading. McCrickerd really wants her students to learn a lot, and you do in her class; however, if you want to take PHIL 90 for just an AOI, I don't recommend it. It's tough.
McCrickerd is great, very helpful, and jokes around a lot. She without a doubt has saved me from failing this class. That said, the class is SUPER TOUGH. Especially for an AOI. If you don't like to do a lot of reading, thinking, and discussion, I recommend finding your Values and Ethics elsewhere. In short - great, fun, helpful teacher, hard class.
Worst professor at Drake. Worst grade so far at Drake. I am a first semester senior and had a 3.8 prior to this class and received a D in the class for no apparent reason besides she gives no explanation, expectations, or feedback.
Took her Moral Fiction class during J-Term. We had to read an 1100 page book in three weeks, keep up with journals, and write a massive thesis at the end of the course. It was by far, the hardest course I've taken but the most enjoyable, intellectually-stimulating course I've ever taken. I absolutely LOVED it!
The class was absolutely unbearable. She expects way too much for an AOI. There was an incredible amount of reading. I did more reading in her class than every other class. Also she will provide some feedback to assignments but it will be about a month later and will do nothing but bash on your work. She also seems to pick and choose who she likes.
Her focus is on the students learning. She does not give you a grade until you fight for it at the end of the semester. The reading is heavy in the start of the semester. She will channel the way you think and expand your knowledge. If you pay attention in class it is a great course. You have to be willing to speak in groups, keep that in mind.
Booooooo! Just not a very fun person to be around, She'll tear you apart in class for messing up one word. Better hope your ideas are perfect or you may become depressed during class.
This class is terrifyingly difficult. The course load is ridiculous and can be dry. There is so much reading and you go through material crazy fast. JMc is a great person and really wants you to learn, but I do not recommend taking one of her classes if you don't have the time and effort to fully dedicate yourself for the semester.
Despite being called a "expert" on ethical theory, she still has not figured out whether the concept of ethics has meaning. As a result, she devotes the first month of class to reading heavy winded philosophers who write in prolix and who themselves cannot sufficiently agree on the "meaning" of ethics. What a way to waste a month of education.
She is awful!!She will take at least a month to give feedback on your papers, and you will spend hours doing reading assignments that are sent out the day before its due, she expects you to read and write a journal on. She lets you make a case for your grade at the end of the semester but if you miss some of the directions she will fail you.
Her courses are tough and time-consuming, but you get a lot out of them. Stay motivated, work hard, don't miss class/come to class prepared, and you should do well. She honestly cares about her students and wants us to succeed.
I did learn a lot, Prof. JMc is certainly knowledgeable but her teaching method was frustrating. Not a prof for people who want a high GPA or a easy work-load. Coming in with a 4.0, I struggled to get a B. The class is brutally difficult, heavy in dense reading, and the grading is unclear and overly critical. Advice: do reading and participate.
Going into this class as a freshmen it was definitely more challenging than expected. The class was extremely time consuming and required a lot of discussion and deep reading. However, if you do participate you'll get a good grade, catch Mcr's attention, and learn a lot. Still, if your looking for an easy class McR's phil090 isn't for you.
She didn't actually teach the class, and the only thing she actually grades is the and final essay where we have to argue for our grade. There's a lot of reading, which is mostly long and difficult, and she often posted it last minute. The class is only one credit, and it's easily my hardest class. I was told it's required for honors, but it's not.
She failed me even though I put so much effort into reading the material before class and participating in discussions. I am not good at putting my understanding in words so my papers did not earn a passing grade. However, I showed better understanding in discussions and asking questions. I would not recommend taking this class whatsoever.
JMc wants the best for her students. She knows you're capable of brilliance, and that's what she expects. She is willing to work through any questions you have about the material, and if you disagree on a point, she's great at pushing you to think all the way through that point. She definitely cares, and pushes herself in the course as well.
This class is only for one credit hour. However, the work load is HEAVY. Assignments are posted last minute and the requirements are often changed and unclear. I understand that some professors like to be tough graders. We were expected to write at LEAST 8 pages arguing for our grades. It's difficult to get an A. Shows bad teaching to me.
Shes straight up mean. She made a handful of students cry. It doesntmatter of you slack off or give it your all, EVERYONE gets a C. Get ready to be pushed really hard and then torn down. The grades wont be posted until almost finals, but youll have homework for every single class period.
Prof. McCrickerd is a great person. She's funny and tries to make class interesting. The bad thing is that participation matters in this class and she is not very helpful with students who have anxiety/don't like to speak in class. If you're shy and planning on taking a class with this professor I would advise you to see disability services first.
Honestly, if you're reading these views and can't tell that the students complaining are lazy and probably not very bright, you must have no ability to read between the lines at all. McCrickerd's a rigorous thinker and she wants students to work. God forbid, right.
JMc is a difficult teacher. It is obvious that she cares for her students, but she expects too much while the ways that she attempts to help tend to make her appear too intimidating. There's homework for every class, the readings are long, and the expectations are not clear until she actually explains them during class.
She is insanely intelligent. You have to work through in her class but if you listen and show her respect you'll be fine. Talk to her though, if your confused talk to her!!! Because you probably won't figure out what you're confused on without her.
For an ethics class full of computer science and data analytics students, there was much more writing than I'm used to. We had about 40 pages of reading a night with freewrites, plus 7 essays (2-3 pages), plus 4 papers (5-10 pages), plus 9 question post (3 paragraphs). I definitely learned a lot and became a better writer though.
This is by far the most reading & writing intensive class i have ever taken. For being an '83 level course it was very ridiculous. Definitely my hardest course of the semester because of the high grading standards and ridiculous grade chart. Take this course during J-Term because you will spend too much time for a computer ethics course.
Yes, you have to do a lot of work. Her expectations are very high. However, I felt I learned so much in this class and I loved it. It is worth the work.
Save yourself the trouble and take this course with a different professor or over the summer. Egregious amount of reading & writing for an 083 course, plus you get ZERO tangible skills for the field of software engineering or data analytics. Also the grading system is wack & changes every 5 minutes. Getting an A is nothing short of a pipe dream.
This professor is the most unreasonable human being I have ever met in my entire life. I wrote a total of 10 papers, had teacher conference meetings quite often, and actively participated in her class and received a D+ grade. I then emailed her about it and was told that that grade was being generous and couldnt prove why that was the case.
Look, JMC really cares about her students, that is obvious. However, she also truly believes everyone is extremely intelligent and capable. I would suggest reading/writing intensive classes BEFORE trying to take one with her. She sticks to her rubrics, and grading is fair. If you have a problem, or need help, just ASK. She's willing to work w/you.
So many readings, but you could get them done the day of if you really had to. This class was self-graded, so if you actually do the work, you really do get the grade you deserve. I didnt do the work. Dont take it freshman year though, unless youre a nerd.
JMc does not mess around. She's funny and kind, but when she is your teacher, she means business. We had many chapters to read every other day from dense texts. You grade yourself so it seems to be okay. Discussions and essays are her tools and if you aren't ready for both, do not take this professor.
This class was awful. I was stuck with her because I was assigned to her first year seminar and didn't realize how awful it would before until it was too late. Her "class discussions" are really ways for her to beg for people to regurgitate what she says and god forbid you suggest your own ideas that contradict hers. (Continuing in next submission)
She does not believe in grading but reflection. So you don't have to worry about getting a good grade because in the end you're giving yourself a grade. I will say that this class was very VERY reading heavy so do not take it lightly!!
Transfer to another FYS and save yourself the stress. The course work is too much for a FYS class with reading 6 books (70 pages min. for each class) and the papers (6 to 15 pages) are critically graded. Professor McCrickerd cares about her students (bringing in treats and taking students to breakfast), but she teaches like its hard upper division
do not take ethics with this professor!!!!
I've met few professors with as much determination to teach students what they truly need to learn in life. She is very value-oriented and attentive to her students' progress beyond simply meeting the requirements of the class. Every class was engaging and very, very meaningful.
While I appreciate her dedication to education and ambition to educate students, I did not enjoy the rigourous amount of effort for a sub-100 course. If you're not a writing person, do NOT take this with her. Unless you do all of the work with near-maximum effort, the chances of an A is near impossible.
JMc is a good professor but I did not enjoy the class.Weird grading. You will not receive an A unless your arguement for why you should receive it is good enough. am a very attentive student but the amount of work you do for the little bit of understanding that you will have is beyond frustrating.
Expects 6 hours of work/homework be done outside of class weekly and reading and workload matches. Posts large amounts of reading mid day Saturday to be done Monday morning instead of posting Wednesday after class. Grading system leaves your grade up to her discretion of how hard she thinks you worked. Would recommend dropping or not taking.
Such a pretentious person and so rude to students. You can tell she thinks she is better than everyone else and claims that she does not expect us to full understand every topic explored, but only gives a passing grade if you display a far advanced level of understanding. Avoid taking classes with her at all costs.
As an international student, I did a lot of writing and reading. Did I improve? Not really. Do I have a better understanding of ethics? Maybe? Throughout all my studies at Drake, I've never had as heavy a workload as I did in this class. I actually had to put in more effort than in my other classes, yet I still received a bad grade.
I really want to like this professor and this class. The content is interesting, and it's obvious that she cares about what she teaches, but there is too much work every week, even for an upper-level course. Unless you want to read and analyze 200-300 pages of hard-to-read ethics papers a week, I would recommend not taking this course.
JMC expects over 6 hours of work outside class EVERY WEEK. I am writing this review in between doing my work for the week. What is my work, you may ask? 22 questions with 3 paragraphs of response per question. What does this equal out to? six-seven essays ON TOP of a final paper all due in the same week. Take my advice, do not take this class.
The worst class I have ever taken. do NOT take Phil113 with her, and ESPECIALLY not online. JMC thinks she is better than everyone else, and writes her own reading material for some readings. Horrific amount of reading each week, 200+ pages on ethical papers. Grades are not based on your level of understanding. Based on # of work done. Horrible.
HARSH GRADER. On the midterm and final paper, which are pass-fail, she gave me a 0/1. I had to rework them multiple times to receive credit. I have always done very well on my essays at Drake. This is just ridiculous. Also, very unorganized, often forgetting to post assignments and changing the instructions for the papers after posting them.
She will give you a zero on ANY essay she disagrees with. Not her opinion? ZERO. If you want to have a high gpa and actually care about your grades do not take this class. JMC is biased and has so many rules for her essays, and if you do something wrong in the essay or she disagrees with you, you don't get a number/100 you get a ZERO.
