Dr. Mierisch Is extremely understanding and wants you to learn as much as you can. She is approachable, not condescending and always available. If you have the chance to work with her do it!! Absolutely fantastic.
Very clear in lecture with powerpoint slides, but gotta attend in order to get more details. 6 quizzes, lowest dropped. 3 exams, including a non-cumulative final. Participation points is credited by using the clicker in class. She definitely wants to make sure that you understand the concepts in order to understand how it all forms together.
Great teacher! Very clear, but class attendance is a must. Always available and a very reasonable teacher. I highly recommend her!
Dr. Mierisch is an excellent professor. She's very nice and helpful but I found her exams a bit weird at times. But she's always willing to help and if you go to office hours regularly, you do quite well. Attendance is mandatory. Class: 2 exams+noncumulative final, 6 quizzes, one of which she drops, and attendance. Class may be curved at the end.
Prof. Mierisch is by far the best professor i have had at loyola so far. She is incredibly helpful, clear, and approachable. Teaches exceedingly well and is straight out of grad school. The subject itself is difficult, but i recorded the lectures and studied them religiously. 2nd test was the hardest. Take her forsure, you will not regret it!
BEST CLASS. I could sit and watch her lecture for days. She possesses the clarity of a freshly windexed mirror.
JUST PHENOMENAL!. She's from MIT and John Hopkins, and just gets it. She wants you to succeed and will not crush your dreams in an upper level bio class like other professors. TAKE HER!!
The class itself is pretty tough but don't worry because she curves like crazy in the end. She'll keep mentioning that throughout the semester that she curves only the final and not individual exams so don't worry!
She's not an easy A, if thats what you're looking for. This class is extremely demanding, and you need to put in unimaginable hours to get an A. She teaches very well though, and I learned a lot. Her discussions are so well organized and benefit you alot, so don't miss those. Her tests always have huge tricks in the true and false.
Best professor I've ever had at Loyola, hands down. She is just so helpful and willing to answer all questions, and she curves the class at the end! Amazing teacher. Just awesome. Take her for cell bio, highly recommended
Dr. Mierisch was the most dedicated professor I have ever had at LUC. She was always willing to help anyone outside of class and encouraged us to email questions which she promptly responded to. Not to mention that she is also brilliant and very kind. 4 tests and you can drop 1 so if you do well on the first 3 then you don't have to take the final!
Extremely overrated. Dale would have been a better choice. Shes very nice and helpful, but you will live and die by the book. ppt's don't help much. STUDY THE BOOK
Awesome person, garbage professor. There are better cell bio profs. out there. Basically have to memorize the book!
Honestly one of the worst Biology professors at Loyola. She does not teach and we are forced to rely heavily on our textbooks. Better professors are out there. I would recommend those over her.
Agree with the previous sentiments. She was great the previous years but changed. Lectures are obscure and she is ambiguous a lot of times. Lay off cell bio, especially if you are taking orgo.
I do not understand the hype with this professor. All based on the textbook, and she is of no use. AVOID
Forget about getting an A. Extremely difficult with little help from her. Kanzok is a better option.
You have to understand, this is cell bio. it is overwhelmingly demanding and you cannot learn it even 3 days before. study the material every day, and you should be successful in her class. she gives you everything you could possibly need. those who bash her don't understand what it takes at this point in the biology level of classes.
She talks really fast during lecture. She does not seem to know the material any better than what she puts on her slides. When you ask her a question in class she just says she'll "get back to you" and never does. Her tests are hard and very specific. She gives pop quizes that are so specific you can only guess on some of the questions.
She was really nice. When you ask questions, she answers directly then directly, which is helpful. She talks quickly so definitely record her lectures. The book is sometimes helpful for clarification, but her tests cover what was on the powerpoints.
I don't understand these negative reviews. She was crystal clear at what she wanted, explained concepts thoroughly, and was always available for help and really wanted you to have a good understanding. This class was tough, but I made it my number one priority and studied the material every single day. People don't understand how much time it takes
Never opened the book once, just took notes on my computer. Don't know what you guys are talking about... everything you needed was on the slides LOL. Don't be mad because you aren't dedicated enough to get an A in a class that will be important in your future endeavors.
You are in College now.Prepare to study, take notes, attend class, and go to office hours if needed. Go to class. If you do not show up, of course your grade will go down. She is a very smarty woman, you do not go to MIT and don't know "anything".Don't question her intelligence. Take advantage of her and ask questions if unclear. Easy A if you study
This course is hard but she makes it as easy as can be. Book used as resource and test are based on lectures which should be recorded as she sometimes talks fast. 3 exams, clicker pts,5 quizzes plus a drop, and a final. 1 exam dropped at the end but not the final. She really tries to make it as easy as possible for a really hard class.
Avoid her! She is a good person but she doesn't know how to teach. I hate Biology after taking her.
Take other professor. She just reads off from power point. Very hard exams and quizzes.
I changed my major after taking her class. Avoid her!
I personally am sad that she doesn't teach more classes. I think that Mierisch is one of the best professors I've had here. She lets you record her lectures and answers all questions emailed to her up until the day of the exam. I've never had such clear explanations from an email. She does have pop quizzes, but it makes you study regularly.
Professor Mierisch is very intelligent but her tests are very difficult. She gives you the powerpoints and you can record her lectures, but even after going over all of the powerpoints multiple times and listening to the lectures, her tests still seem impossible. Be prepared to work very hard for this class.
She is really well versed in the topic, but talks at about 100 miles a minute and even if you ask her to slow down, she will for about two slides and then speed up. You'll leave the tests thinking you did well but end up doing poorly. Hard to follow her in lectures, and sometimes she messes up what she's saying. Very dry. Not my favorite.
Dr. Mierisch is probably the best professor I have ever taken in the entire Biology department. She knows her Bio very well and is very approachable. She talks extremely fast, but encourages you to record lectures. Her discussions are great review sessions for the test. Review notes on a daily basis, seek help when needed, and you should pass.
Dr. Mierisch is my favorite bio professor at Loyola. Her lectures are very well organized and she selects interesting papers for discussion. I like how quickly she lectures and she's the only prof I don't have to speed up. Amazing class.
Dr Mierisch is amazing! Four tests including the final, nothing is cumulative. One test is dropped except the final. Tophat questions during class so participation matters. Quizzes are usually announced. She is very clear during lecture and encourages you to record them. Always helpful during office hours. She allows a note card for the test also.
Gives really hard tests and refuses to curve. Avoid at all costs!
Jennifer Mierisich is one of the best bio professors at this school but its safe to say this was the hardest bio class I've ever taken in my life. Her exams are very difficult, asks on the most specific things in her lectures. Do not take this class if you have a heavy semester course load
Dr. Mierisch is an incredible lecturer. She knows here material very well, but she does speak a mile a minute so RECORD HER LECTURES!!!! and then re-listen to them and take notes after class. She is very friendly and very helpful. Her tests are hard and very detail oriented. Take Mierisch if you want to learn a lot and are willing to work hard
Her lectures are crystal clear & she's accessible for questions/feedback. Uses iclicker a lot and knows her stuff. Her tests are crazy difficult but she gives test reviews and drops worst quiz/exam which is nice. She encourages you to record her lectures, which can be helpful when studying. I liked her. Solid Choice, but hard- study a lot.
Take her for Cell bio!!! Record her lecture and write it all down and you will be fine! She is super helpful during office hours and responds very fast to emails. There are 4 exams 30 questions with short answers and you get to drop one. There are also quizzes and two journal articles and tophat. You can talk to you classmates for Top Hat
Probably one of the best Bio professors I have ever had at this school. Very approachable when it comes to asking questions and always willing to help her students out with the material. Final is not cumulative, and all 4 exams are the same format. The material itself is very detail oriented, but she allows a small cheat sheet for exams.
One of the most amazing professors at LUC. Her lectures are amazing. If you record her+memorize those notes, you'll do amazing on the exams. Her exams are straightforward. She is extremely accessible outside class + will explain all questions very clearly. She genuinely cares about her students. You have to work for an A but it is completely doable
Dr. Mierisch is an outstanding professor with clear expectations. Her cell biology class was eye-opening and forced me to change my study habits for the better. She is approachable at all times. Her level of intelligence is truly aspiring and her research is intriguing as well. I wish I have the opportunity to take her again!
Good professor but a pretty hard class. Very detail oriented so you have to record her lecture and rewrite everything. I had to significantly put more work into this class than even orgo2 and still barely got an A because she curved our class last minute. Not impossible to get a good grade but REALLY work for it
Overall she is a nice professor, but her exams are very hard. 3 exams (drops 1) + final. 6 quizzes, 4 journal articles (group work ) and top hat. To get an A, record lectures and write everything she says and then memorize both lectures and pp slides. Very detailed orientated and hard exams. Goodluck!
Jenny Mierisch is one of the best professors I've ever had. She really cares about her students and takes the time to learn everyone's name. You definitely need to record her lectures though and listen to them while studying. You have to work hard to get a good grade but she is really amazing!
TAKE!! Exams are straight forward/fair. It is a bit of work to learn the material and understand it though. If you want an easy A do this: record the lecture, take DETAILED notes of the recording(takes about 3-4 hours/lecture), reread/learn your notes(takes about 30 minutes), and then relisten(1.5 hours). Allows a notecard, drops 1 of 4 exams.
Loved her! Her exams are really easy if you put in the work. It does take some time to take notes/relearn the material but if you do the work ahead of time, put everything on your notecard for the exams, you'll do great. She'll curve to make the final class average an 80%. But I've gotten 100's on some of the exams.. they're more than fair.
Um, so her class is very straightforward with 4 exams, drop 1, 4 journal articles, 8 quizzes drop 2, and top hat points. Everything on the exams are in her lecture, so record her for sure. Jennifer is not my favorite person but she is a very good lecturer/explainer. Also has notecard on exam. Way better than the other cell bio options.
she is an amazing professor both inside out. she gives good feedback use office hours. take her! she lectures really fast but record her and take good notes you will be fine. her lectures are interesting. exams are a bit tough but pay attention during lectures and don't miss class bcz exams are all lecture based
Amazing professor! Class material can be tough because there is so much to learn, so the lectures go fast. I recommend recording lectures and going over them after class because she only tests on what is said during lecture. She will help if you ask her and she is very knowledgeable on what she is teaching.
The exams are the main thing that counts. Everything else doesn't matter. If you don't pass the exams you wont pass the class. Her exams are terrible and she words them in a way where you wont understand it.
Dr. Mierisch is an amazing professor who really cares about her student's success. Her exams are a little hard but completely fair. Anyone who says her exams are hard doesn't relisten to her lectures. Outside of class, she is always ready to set up an appointment and help her students. I wish she taught other courses as well! Def recommend her.
Dr. Mierisch is really nice but her exams are really difficult and you can only miss like 20 points in the class... which is so ridiculous considering cell bio is a very difficult class that requires a ton of memorization. Completely unfair. Her teaching style is really good, just not her grading scale. I can't stress how terrible this class was!
I really loved her teaching and she made everything very clear and easy to understand, but I don't like how hard it is to achieve an A. Her class is only out of 420 points which doesn't give you a lot of wiggle room so its very frustrating. Her exams can be tricky but listen to recordings over again, thats the key to success in her class
Solid choice for cell bio! Lectures can be boring and very detailed but you don't need to know details for tests. You'll need to study but 2-3 hours a week should be fine. Drops your lowest test and 2 lowest quizzes and you get easy points from tophat and research article assignments. From what I've heard much better than other cell bio profs
her class overall is tough but you will learn a lot from her. record her lecture take good notes you will receive a decent grade. there a 4 lecture exam with a noncumulative final and quizzes and a paper, not much class work but study hard and take her she is one of the best
Great professor who is passionate about what she teaches. You will be successful if you re-watch her lectures (you don't have to read to pass). This class has lots and lots of material, but that's just how cell bio is, so you will need to study a ton. 4 exams, drop 1, and a couple of quizzes. 4 group projects that aren't too hard. TAKE HER!!!
She's super knowledgable and kind. The class itself is tough, but if you listen to her lectures and take good notes you'll do ok. Lectures were super heavy, but that's just the class. I recommend!
Dr. Mierisch is so sweet, helpful, accommodating, and very passionate. The lectures feel very overwhelming at first, but as long as you rewatch them and study thoroughly, the tests are not hard at all and very straight forward. The hw, participation questions, and group assignments are easy points, and she drops your lowest quiz and test.
She is nice but her class is graded out of few things. The group projects and quizzes saved my grade but oof the exams were tough. Class requires a lot of studying. Exams are difficult. I think they can be easier but she words them weird. Overall, nice professor but really hard class. Good luck!
Good at explaining the material and has clear/concise lectures. Her exams are difficult and you need to study a lot to do well on them, but are very doable. HW, participation, and group assignments are free points, and quizzes aren't too bad. Drops your lowest exam and quiz. She's overall a solid choice for anyone taking cell bio, and is very fair.
Great professor, but the class was difficult. This class requires you to study A LOT because you learn so much material. The exams are very hard and are worded weird. Professor Mierisch really tried to make sure people understood the material and tried to help everyone succeed in the class.
Cell biology is not one of my favorite subjects, and I understand that there was a lot of information to get through (I'm not sure how other cell bio classes are though), but this was one of the more difficult courses I have taken. Sure, the material is straightforward but there is a lot of it and none of it piqued my interest.
Dr. Mierisch does a really good job of explaining the material. Yes it is a lot of material to consume, but she does her best to make it as understandable as possible for everyone. Cell Biology is a straightforward but hard class just because of the amount of information, but Dr. Mierisch has structured the class in our favor.
She's not a bad teacher, but if you're taking this class along with org chem would NOT recommend you take her. Tests and quizzes are really specific, and I had to devote more time to this class than any other. Rewatch her lectures frequently and review the slides regularly if you want to pass.
Dr. Mierisch is an incredible professor! She is very passionate about what she teaches and absolutely knows what she's talking about. Her instruction and teaching is very clear and she answers every single question students have, even if it's just to repeat the slide one more time. She cares about her students, and wants to see people succeed.
Dr. Mierisch is amazing! This class is really difficult but she does everything to make it better. Go to lectures and especially discussing because she gives out extra notes that really help. She records all lectures. Exams are MC and two short answer. Group projects reading journal articles. Smartwork HW not bad. Study for quizzes! Good professor
Fine, very boring lectures. Study slides, all are posted, tests are exactly the same as the slides. You can use a notecard on exams which is super helpful because it's a material-heavy class.
Honestly, I was nervous about taking this class, but Dr. Mierisch made this class easy because of how much she cares about her students. She offered a lot of opportunities to improve your grade with group assignments and extra credit. If you pay attention to the lecture and take notes from the slides you will do fine!
Lectures are detailed + specific. Straightforward with teaching. Always clarifies confusing topics. Grade is mostly exams/quizzes/hw. Offers some extra credit opportunities. Uploads lecture videos (helpful for review). Tip: study from the slides and practice handouts. Overall, solid choice for cell bio.
Dr. Mierisch is a great choice for cell biology. She records all lectures and allows make-ups for everything as long as you have a valid excuse. Tests are straight from her lecture slides, homework, and practice handouts. She is a great lecturer and will take the time to clarify anything needed. Overall, a great choice for the class!
Friendly and approachable professor. Grading of the entire class can be misleading, there seems to be many criteria included in the class grading but they don't play a role in very much helping your grade in the class, must pass exams if you want to pass the class. Exams are very hard and detailed, must know minuscule details.
Dr. Mierisch made cell bio understandable. Her class consists of 4 exams, weekly quizzes, participation, and journal review articles. She also genuinely cares about her students and wants them to succeed. Although she has a lot of content, I think she is a good choice for cell bio. She is also very accessible and gives extra credit!
You need to know every minute detail for the exams and she is unpredictable. The questions on any of her assignments are not clear even after spending 2hrs a day reviewing the material and preparing for the exam, it does not pay off at all unless you are a bio nerd. No drops allowed, do not take!
Dr. Mierisch was one of the best professors I have had in the biology department at Loyola. She cares for the wellbeing of her students and is very understanding. She made herself available outside of class in her office and on zoom. Definitely take a class with her if you have the chance.
Tons of material but she does a good job of pausing for questions and being accessible outside of class time whether during office hours or review sessions before exams. Lots of quizzes to keep you honest about studying, but they are helpful review for the exam and they aren't too bad if you study. One side of a notecard allowed for each exam.
Jennifer is very nice and definitely knows here stuff when it comes to cell bio. Her lectures are very content heavy (the PowerPoints are from the book so you don't need to buy the book) and she goes into a lot of detail so pay attention. The overall grade is made up of 8 quizzes, 4 exams, 4 group assignments, and some homework assignments.
She is a wonderful person, but I won't lie the class is super difficult. The exams are multiple choice, but that actually made everything worse for me. I would do great on the quizzes and homework, but the exams were only about 40 questions, which means there is little room for error. Weekly quizzes you need to study for.
In order to do very well in her class, do NOT ZONE OUT DURING LECTURE. I got an A because I used my Ipad to download her slides and then write what she is saying on the slides. Her tests are based primarily on what she SAYS AND WHATS ON THE SLIDES. Do not just study the slides, study what she SAYS. Use her handouts she gives as study tools too.
One of the best bio profs I've encountered at Loyola. lectures are very content heavy, but they're recorded and I highly recommend going back to watch them if you zone out, miss class, or are confused on a slide. extremely knowledgeable and approachable, the course is organized well and presented in a very understandable manner, lot of extra credit
3 exams 50%, 5% Discussion, 17% presentation, 20% biweekly Perusal, 10% presentation. The class consists of reading research articles for every class. The readings are long and challenging but the exams are straightforward and usually just test on methods, rather than actual content. She tolerated late Perusal comments for full credit back.
Genuinely the best STEM professor I've ever had. She is so accommodating and understanding. Professor merisch is so sweet and so knowledgeable and passionate in what she teaches. She is also super engaging. This is not going to be an easy class and you will need to study, but if you put in the work, it's so manageable
She prerecords all lectures so they're all accessible. Only days that you need to come technically are the group research paper comprehension assignments every unit and quizzes. Exams and quizzes are very straightforward if you do her handouts and go to office hours. She is very accommodating and will meet with you one-on-one.
Cell bio is a hard course, you will need to study but in this class lectures are recorded and posted and there are so many resources to help. Dr. Mierisch is so caring and respectful of all of her students, she never makes you feel dumb for not understanding something. Best bio prof at Loyola that ive had. 10/10 reccomend.
She uses lecture material on exams, which require studying your notes. I wrote what she SAID on her downloaded slides. She also records her lectures. Although attendance is optional, she does participation credit for practice multiple choice questions in class, so it is not really optional if you would like to add 25 points to your grade.
