She teaches at lightening speed, which makes organic chemistry impossible to understand.
pretty good teacher...
ok teacher, but her tests are almost impossible
she teaches so fast yet talks to the class like their idiots. i definately don't reccomend her
That class was impossible in the spring, stupid class put me on academic warning. I didn't think she was a good teacher, plus the tests were horrible.
The only tool we have to pass the class is the book and then her tests are totally different. Not concise in making points. Lacks heavy math problems in lecture, which is ALL the tests are.
Teaches too quickly and always misses saying the ONE thing that would make the concept understandable- She has a way of making everything more confusing than it actually is. On the good side, class is fun and would be great if it weren't for the tests.
I think she is a great teacher. She does a great job at teaching, and not just giving out grades. If you're a sophomore or freshman just looking for an easy class, don't take her. If you really want to learn, than she's the best, she does go fast!
She is absolutely an amazing teacher. I took this class from a different professor last semester and she is 100X better!! She is so approachable and will help you understand the material. She does go fast and the tests are hard, but overall.. great class!
This class was a killer, but I think it is from any professor. She teaches fast and has hard tests, but will give you lots of points back on the tests if you go talk to her. She'll keep you awake and fairly entertained.
You could probably find a better teacher, but not a more engaging one. Looked forward to class every day; she's such an happy person it's hard to be otherwise. Highly recommended. Talk to her in person about test-grading errors; she's much more generous.
She teaches quickly, and it was hard for me to keep up until I started reading the chapter before class - then it all made sense. If you don't understand something, just go to her office hours. She's so great and will explain everything how you need it.
Horrible. She would jump from topic to topic and never completely finish about a topic and then she woud test on the non-completed part of the topic. The tests were impossible and keeping up with where she might go next in lecture is also impossible.
She is very enthusiastic and loves chemistry. However, she wanders all over when taking notes, and rarely finishes the notes that she starts. I had to rewrite my notes everyday so that they would make some sense. The tests and quizzes are very hard. I would go elsewhere if you have a choice.
Great personality. She really wants you to understand the concepts. She will change some of the things in the book to her own words so that it is easier to understand.
I liked her as a person, but not her class. I understood the material perfectly but when I went to take the tests I was so confused. It was almost like she was trying to prove to us that she was smart. LEctures all over the place!
Taught things we didn't need to know. There was a quiz every Friday... tests were hard for me... NO HOMEWORK
Seemed like she really cares. Tests and quizzes suck. She would spend 20 min on something and not include it on the test, then mentioon some little fact as a sidenote and have three questions on the exam about it. Exams alot more difficult than the material in class.
She is as helpful to students as she can be. The trouble is, it can never be enough for how hard the class is by nature. I barely passed the class but if you have to take the class you should take it from her because she will do her best to be fair to you.
She was as good of a teacher as possible for organic chem. (Organic chem is near impossible for me) Tests were really difficult. She didn't ever assign homework, but do the questions in the book for yor own benefit! I didn't and wish I would have and I would've pulled off a much better grade.
She is a wonderful teacher! She is very helpful and explains things very well. Her tests and quizzes are hard but as long as you put in the work; you will do well. I highly recommend taking any and all chemistry classes from her if you can.
She is a great teacher. Chemistry is hard from anyone but she puts in alot of time to help you understand. She really loves chemistry and teaching and it makes a huge differemce. Her tests are hard but go to her help sessions each week because she will do problems exactly like one on the quiz and tests. She's my favorite teacher. I reccommend her
For a 2 hour class, the ammount of information given and what is expected of u on the test is irrationably high. Challenging course, but she's a nice person. You work harder in this 2 hour class than any other 3 or 4 hour class.
She is a great teacher who gives you exactly what will be on each test. The only problem is that she gives too many free points to those students who whine about their test scores. However, I would still recommend taking organic chemistry from her.
getting an A in this class is very possible if you just put in the time. Go to help sessions, especially if Melissa is the TA. The reviews are exactly what the in class quizzes are like
Tests are all free response, and nearly impossible to get an A on. She is a good teacher, and loves chemistry. The TA's are good at O-chem, but aren't that great at helping you be better. This class is very labor intensive. Plan on reading, attending review sessions, and doing suggested homework problems if you want a B or better
I hate Chemistry and have never done well until I took this class. Very helpful and if you study and do well on the quizzes the tests are a breeze. Totally possible to get an A. If i did it than anyone can. Just put time into it.
Sis. Nielsen is THE coolest lady around!! the class was extremely difficult but doable if you put some time into it (which i didnt). but if you gotta take o chem, take it from sis. nielsen! she's really energetic and willing to help and get to know every single student.
Worst teacher I have ever had and she thinks she is great. This class could be so much easier if she was a good teacher. She just copies the book for lecture everyday.
Excellent teacher, does a wonderful job of explaining difficult material. She is the only ochem teacher that I can keep me awake. The class itself is quite hard. But study hard and you can get an A.
She doesn't assign homework, which I really liked. The tests were tougher than anything in the book. At times it seemed like to do well, you had to get extra help.
Prof. Nielson was AMAZING! i was a bit apprehensive about the class--chemistry isnt my strong point, but Prof. Nielson did plenty of reviews and was always more than willing to talk with you! Tests werent easy, but she gives study worksheets beforehand. Very do-able class!
She is the worst chemistry professor on campus. She is vague and just copies stuff from the book and writes it on the board. Can't teach buth thinks she can. Don't bother with the test reviews they won't help you at all on the test. This class was terrible!!
Prof. Nielson really is a good teacher, but only if you've never ever been exposed to chemistry in your life. It you have get ready to do a LOT of unnecessary conversion factors that just get in the way and confuse you. Other than that she really loves chemistry and can definitely help. Get ready for some rough times though.
Great
I've never had chemistry before and found this class to be nowhere near as bad as I thought it was going to be. I found that most students in her class who said that it's hard if you have had chemistry before are the ones who were too confident in their chemistry abilities and therefore did not put in enough effort. Read, do problems, and listen.
Nielson was a really good Chem teacher. She is really smart and explains things very well. She is still pretty tough though! Tests are hard but just study a lot. Don't get behind, keep up with the reading and the problems. Get to know her! It will help. Go to her office ours and problem solving sessions. The TA, Melissa, is a wonderful help
Dr. Nielson was amazing! she really cared about how the students learned and was interested in each of them. Get to know her, and you'll benefit! Also, make sure you study what she likes...it'll almost always show up on the test. Overall, a hard class, but a great teacher.
Excellent teacher. Not an easy class but if you take time to study the material she presents in class and make occasional visits with her you will do fine.
Awesome teacher! She teaches well and does lots of fun experiments in class, but watch out because her tests are hard. Do the reviews and go to class.
I was a TA for Dr. Nielson for a couple semesters. O-Chem. is a subject that you cannot fake knowledge on. You have to earn your grade by studying hard. Her course is perfectly organized and easy to follow (for any student, regardless of your GPA). I was never that good at Chemistry and she made a seemingly scary course very doable.
She's a good teacher. Lecture is very organized, and if you buy her note packet for like $3, notes are really easy and you know what to study. The people who said tests were impossible probably just didn't understand chemistry. Study her notes hard before tests, and you'll do well. I read the book like 4 times still and got an A.
She is really nice, but her lectures were very confusing for me. Luckily, I took chem 105 the semester before, so I could make some sense of them. Her weekly quizzes were easy, but tests could be killer. The final however, was relatively easy. I would recommend not taking from her.
Sister Nelson is so nice and really funny. You can ask her anything and not feel stupid. She is more than willing to help. If you need help make sure you go to her during her office hours not many people go so it might just be you and her and you will learn a lot. I really, really liked sister Nelson.
She cruises way to fast in her lectures and just talks and talks almost to herself and you can tell she has done it 100 times. She will fill up about 14 chalkboards in an average 50 minute class. Take someone else who feels they can talk to the students and listen to their questions.
Very difficult goes through the material much faster than my friends in other classes were going.
Goes very fast, tests are completely different than homework, quizes and practice tests. Very hard
I took this class summer term, which meant that it went insanely fast, but I actually enjoyed her as a teacher. It was a whirlwind of information, but once I figured out how to study the material, it wasn't too bad. Tests are very hard, and you need to know the material backwards and forwards, but after I got used to that, things were fine.
Amazing lectures; not so amazing tests. My grade will probably not reflect my understanding of O-chem, nor the effort and time I invested in this class. That, however, has more to do with Chemistry department than Dr. Nielson. She really is an amazing, inspiring teacher - in and outside of class. I couldn't recommend her more!
Dr. Nielson taught O-chem very well. I thought the class was over-rated. It wasn't all that difficult if you studied. Once I got used to the class after the first test, I averaged over 96% on all her tests. Very good professor. Taking her again.
WORST TEACHER EVER!! Way too much work. Weekly lab, weekly quiz, 4 virtual labs, 7 online assignments, 4 MIDTERMS, and the final, plus a bunch of other stuff. Don't take her classes!!!!! She is terrible at explaining things and her lectures are boring. My final grade didn't reflect what I actually learned. Tests aren't anything like quizzes or hw.
This is a pretty difficult class, but she does a pretty good job as making it clear and understandable as possible. It takes a lot of work and study but I would recommend her for this class.
Chem 105 covers a ridiculous amount of material no matter who teaches it, so you really can't survive without reading the textbook very carefully. If you read before class and then look at the lectures as clarification and cementing the knowledge, you'll do okay. She's helpful, but you just have to put in a lot of independent effort.
Nielson was super helpful, engaging, and a great teacher; however, in her syllabus, she states that if you can only do problems like ones you have seen before (in HW, on quizzes)you WILL get no better than a C+ in the class. To do better than that, you will need to spend a lot of time outside of class (unless you have prior chem experience)
Dr Nielson is the greatest! She is very difficult, but she is willing to help you as much as you want. She is energetic and explains things very well. She was my favorite science teacher at BYU. Don't miss out on her class!
first, chem 105 is the hardest and most time-consuming class i've ever taken, so don't expect much. plus, the chem department is pretty jacked up. dr. nielson is a fairly good lecturer, and wants her students to succeed. however, she doesn't do much to prepare her students for tests. plus, her tests are tricky. i think it's sixes with every teacher
Took both semesters from her. Second semester is easier. She is a fun and happy person but doesn't teach science well. Especially if you wanna understand M.O. theory and be able to think about ochem on your own take someone who can teach concepts and not feel like she has to race race to cover tons of material without establishing proper foundati
Dr. Nielson is a great professor - one of my favorites at BYU. Her lectures are fast-paced and the class is hard, but I think that comes with the territory (what else do you expect from OChem?). She was EXTREMELY helpful in her office hour and cares a ton about student success (she doesn't research, so her focus is teaching).
WARNING! She is nice. She says "Is that ok" 20-30 times every class. Is helpful in office hours but the same Teachers pets are there all the time and it's hard to talk to her if you don't understand the material. Her practice exams are NOTHING like her real exams and have errors on them everytime, but don't worry she'll tell you about them later.

O-CHEM is a hard subject, but Dr. Neilsen teaches it really well. She expects you to do the reading for class so she doesn't take a whole lot of time to go over what is in the book (just the key points). On her tests, she expects you to know the material. They are not overly tricky but you can't guess your way through them.
I enjoyed this class. It was very tough. Tests are not easy. She moves really fast, but is very helpful.
Very Clear. She actually teaches and walks you through the principles as she writes them on the chalkboard. Tests are fair, and not too bad if you do the homework. Many (including Prof. Nielsen) say that her Chem 351 class usually has a substantial curve, but not in Chem 352 cause only the pre-meds/pre-dents take it. It's a rat race. :-)
I liked this class. Her tests are challenging, but not impossible. She has an outline for her notes which is super helpful! Have to read the book and do problems at the end of the chapters. Weekly homework is not enough to really learn the material well enough.
she teaches great. she makes class fun and interesting. i would definitely take her class again.
Nielson is great. I think she's the only one in the dept not here for research. Class is fast-paced and comprehensive, so you MUST stay up with the reading. If you have access to the Carrey book that will be helpful. Do as many book problems as you possibly can. Grade is based mostly on exams (84% of the final grade). Not bad if you can keep up.
She really does make class interesting, and really does a great job explaining the concepts that are behind it. she also gave us practice exams before every test, and they REALLY help. Don't miss class, it goes up and above the book. Just a lot of material to remember.
Dr. Nielson is wonderful. I learned a ton from her. I struggled to follow the material in class, but her office hours are incredibly helpful. Take advantage of them.
Clear understandable lectures, discussion during Iclickers, and helpful homework assignments(and practice exams!) I've had many science teachers. She is by far the BEST at explaining, the most helpful, and the most interesting I've ever had. I'm serious, if you want to succeed and are willing to do the work in O Chem, she will help you succeed! A+
Great practice tests and iclicker quizzes. Nielsen is really great at explaining difficult concepts (come on, it's Ochem). I would recommend Dr Nielsen to anyone wanting to understand and pass ochem. I wish I had her for 352!
Dr. Nielson is one of my favorite teachers I have ever had. The class is hard and I had to study a lot. She's really excited about the subject every day and is a VERY personable teacher. She's awesome! The tests are fairly hard but pretty fair. The textbook she uses is also the best textbook I've ever used too.
Although she does well explaining hard subjects and is usually willing to help students in her office, she is difficult to work with. She takes her class too seriously and wont help or be understanding if you miss something - even if it is discriminating against those with disabilities or University policy. Don't get on her bad side. Hard class!
Dr. Nielson is one of my favorite professors at this university. She is very approachable, and more than willing to explain topics that you can't quite understand. It is a hard class, but well worth the extra effort that she required from her students.
That was a great class. Not as hard as everybody told me. Do homework, read the book (I guess it is not required), get prepared for the tests, and you will ace the class. This professor is awesome.
I love this Professor! She's one of the nicest people ever. She's so willing to help you understand and answer your questions. I always look forward to going to lecture. She's one of my favorite people to be around. She has such a fun and understandable teaching style. She loves chemistry, and it makes me like it too. :)
Prof. Nielson was really a great professor. When she taught, she taught with the intent that we would learn, and she taught at a level we could understand. It was a lot of work (over the summer). Her test questions were meant to gauge learning, not stump you. They are really hard tests though. Great prof.
A really nice lady, but this class is definitely not for beginners, she rushes over material she expects you already know from reading the book, so it's just like a really fast review of a high school chemistry class and depending on how well you remembered that determines how well you do in the class
Professor Nielson focuses on the students rather than her research and takes the time to explain things that were unclear the first, second, or even the third time through. Extremely hard material, but best teacher that teaches it. I would strongly recommend Professor Nielson to anyone.
She is really enthusiastic about chemistry and a really nice lady, but she is an awful teacher. I learned more in high school chemistry than I did in this class. She does not explain things well in any way shape or form. She does not teach this class every semester so she is not very skilled in getting the message across.
She was very very difficult to understand. But she meant well and was very kind. :)
Horrible teacher. She makes no sense. I understood the material better before the class than I did after. She takes the class way too fast, just breezes over the important concepts, and she tests/quizzes us on material she hasn't taught yet. She is a very nice lady but I would never recommend her to anyone.
I've taken a lot of chemistry classes at BYU and Dr. Nielson's 285 class was by far the worst. Her test questions have nothing to do with what she talks about in class. She does not know how to explain difficult concepts, and makes you memorize everything. Take it from a different teacher, if at all possible.
I was really impressed with Dr. Nielson. She genuinely loves Chemistry and teaching and it shows. The class took a lot of time, but it was TOTALLY do-able. There were TONS of opportunities for extra help - she had help sessions after every lecture. The tests are very thorough, but most of the hard questions are just small details from the book.
She is a really sweet teacher and is always willing to help you out, but if you have not had a prior chemistry class, this class will seem very hard. If you understand chemistry pretty well already, then the tests are easy and there is a big curve in the class. Great teacher but not for everyone.
You can tell she really loves chemistry, problem is that her tests are a lot harder than what she teaches. She's good at teaching what she decides to teach, she just doesn't teach everything you need to know to do well. If you can fill in the gaps, then she's a good and fun teacher, otherwise find someone else.
Very nice and funny :)
The lectures were surprisingly fun (for o chem anyways). Tests were hard but graded fairly. It was hard to know what to focus on cause she isn't that clear and there are a ton of rxns. Be prepared for long exams. don't get behind. it is easy to push off reading and doing practice probs cause only tests and iclicker are counted.
I agree with the rating below. Dr. Nielson is my favorite Chem teacher. She loves O-Chem and made me love it too because her excitement rubs off. She just has a way of engaging you. The perfect teacher.
Dr. Nielson is probably the best O. chem professor, but her tests are really hard. Then again, the BYU chemistry department controls grades so much, it'll be the same no matter which prof you take. I would recommend Dr. Nielson because she is very helpful and easy to approach.
Definitely has a passion for o-chem and cares about the students. I like how she applied principles to real life things. You have to discipline yourself to study since recitation problems are not graded. Tests are very hard and wholly determine your grade but no matter who you take it from, it's hard to do well in o-chem.
Hard to follow lecture. You will die if you don't read before and after. She is very kind, but talks so fast during lecture.
Everyone knows that this is a hard class for most people. However, Dr. Nielsen knows that, too, and she does her best to make it as non-painful as possible. I had a different teacher for 351 and now I wish I had been able to take it from Dr. Nielsen.
Chemistry is not my subject. Dr. Nielson made it at least approachable. She had review sessions (hers were much better than the TAs for me) and I actually learned from the homework. She's great in lecture but the tests are difficult because they're different from class/homework.
I loved her class. She is a very good teacher. The tests are hard, but I think that it is just because the subject is hard. I would totally recommend her. She is very nice and very friendly. She wants students to succeed.
She made chemistry fun. I kinda wish I had her for Chem105 and 106.
Dr. Nielson is my best friend. Chem 285 is my worst nightmare. Her tests are extremely difficult, but she's beyond willing to help you until you understand.Show her that you want to learn, and she will do her best to help you learn.
She always manages to keep chemistry interesting, but has a hard time clearly explaining concepts. The homework she gives is actually extremely helpful, as it is always short but comprehensive. Her tests are somewhat hard, as she expects learned concepts to be applied in new ways. Less than an hour of homework each week, but plenty of studying.
Professor Nilsen is an amazing teacher. The TAs were super helpful and she really takes the time in class for the majority of her students to grab hold of new concepts. She loves chemistry which makes it easier to enjoy class. Chemistry 105 is difficult no matter who you have, but Nielsen is an awesome teacher. I definitely recommend her.
Professor Nielson is a great teacher. She tries hard to make the class fun and interesting, and she really loves chemistry and shows it in her teaching style. That being said, Chem 105 is a hard class, but she gives you everything you need to succeed if you put in the time and effort.
She is a phenomenal teacher. This class is hard by nature but she makes it exciting and interesting. She never misses a beat in class and really knows her stuff! I would highly recommend her to anyone!
Professor Nielson is a cool lady, but this class was awful! We didn't have an actual book that could explain concepts and she wasn't always the best at explaining the concepts either. Her tests were all short answer. The class as a whole did poorly. I should have had an F in the class but managed to get a C. I wouldn't recommend taking it.
To whom it may concern, Dr. Nielson is a great and fun person but her class was a total nightmare! She didn't explain concepts well in class and she doesn't teach what is on her tests. I studied at least 25 hours for each test and still scored pretty low. My GPA was a 3.9 and now is a 3.84 because of this course. :(
I'm impressed with how much she is willing to work with you one on one!! You'll need her, the textbook, TA's, lecture notes and consistent practice to get an A. This should be a 4 credit class. 4 midterms and 351 & 352 final. Take it from her if you like to work hard.
If you attend class, read the book and memorize the material diligently before the test you should be fine. Dr. Nielson really cares about her students. She's very thorough in her explanations of the material as well. I'd recommend her to anyone who wants to learn biochemistry.
She is always concerned for each individual.
She is a great person and teacher. Her tests are a little rough, but the class is doable, especially for a GE.
Professor Nielson is a fantastic person. She's very entertaining yet the way she teaches did not click with me AT ALL. I studied constantly and still had a rough time in her class. This is a hard subject so it would have been nice to have a really understandable teacher.
She is super awesome and upbeat. The class is like drinking out of a fire hydrant. So much info, just do everything. Read, go to class, go to office hours. iclicker quizzes for credit, homework for each unit, really hard tests.
Dr. Nielson is an awesome professor! The class was hard--what organic chemistry class isn't? But Dr. Nielson explained everything very well and was really helpful.
This class is a nightmare!!! However, Dr. Nielson works very hard to create a positive learning environment and relieving some stress. She is more than willing to help. Just a warning...she gives very hard tests! Be prepared! Overall I recommend her as a teacher for this class.
This class is really hard. BUT Prof Nielson can help you through! She cares so much about the students. Her way of teaching is very clear and she tries to make it entertaining. She made this incredibly difficult class much more manageable!
Overall, a great teacher. Really wants to help you succeed. The fact is, ochem is tough, but she's a good option to take it from.
Worst Professor I have had at BYU. She never directly answers questions answers questions and is condescending. Here exams don't match what she teaches. She tests on lots of conceptual principles she barely touches on in class. Take from Dr. Price instead if at all possible!
Wow this class sucks but I think she might be retiring? Anyways DON'T take this class from her, take it from Price. Super hard to follow in class, tests took 4.5+ hours, and we are on test 3 while Price's class is on test 2! That's a lot of extra material shoved down your throat! TA's are pretty hit or miss as far as helpfulness goes
Dr. Nielson is the one of the best professors at BYU. She is also one of the hardest. Organic chemistry is a killer class but if you are willing to put forth the effort she will go the extra mile for anybody, especially considering the size of the class.
I liked her a lot. She was fun, and I learned a lot from lecture, and they tipically helped on exams. ATTEND LECTURE. I never did the reading, like ever, I just read the end of chapter summary and worked problems and I got a B in the class. She gave study guides which helped a ton for the exam, and had some great TA's. I'd recommend her fasho
TAKE it FROM PRICE. She is a good teacher, but scattered. Lecture was hard to follow and often didn't line up with readings which was frustrating. price is the best ochem teacher by far. Its a lot of work no matter what but he makes it easier to follow.
Dr. Nielson is a hard, hard teacher. Your GPA will be hurt if you take this class from her. She's a harder-than-reasonable teacher.
Tests are very difficult and require about 3 hours. Hardest thing about Nielson's class is no homework is required and even then, her tests vary from the textbook a lot. She's a funny and nice teacher, but beware her class is very hard. Take from Dr. Price if you can. He's the best!
Dr. Nielson is very friendly and excited to learn from. But she does little to help you understand the material outside of class. Her tests are also very difficult, but she often has a hefty curve to make up for it.
Overall, just a bad teacher.
This class should have been easy, but I felt like it was pretty tough. Sometimes the things on the tests weren't covered in class. Also some of her quizzes were pretty challenging. I don't think the HW was too bad though. Dr Nielson could have done a better job preparing us for the test. She's also a tough grader. At least she curves the grad
Professor Nielson is the best! Her lectures are easy to follow and engaging. There are many homeworks and group quizzes, so it's easy to stay on top of what you know and what you don't. This chick spends hours making practice exams and a topics list before every exam so there are no surprises. If you are diligent you will get an A.
Everyone knows chem 105 is a hard class, but Prof. Nielson is great! Lectures are interesting. She actually cares about students. There are weekly worksheets, quizzes and she makes practice tests before all tests, which are lifesavers. The tests are TOUGH, but it's chem 105 so that's expected. Don't take the class if you aren't willing to work.
Professor Nielson is a great professor. She does the best she can with what little time she has. If you go in and talk with her, she'll always help and she's always ready to explain concepts more clearly. If you read and pay attention in lectures, you should pass with high grades since the class usually gets a huge curve at the end of the semester.
Chem 105 is a very hard class that requires lots of work. That being said professor Nielson is an amazing teacher. She has engaging lectures, lots of pre-test practice problems, and is very willing to help you if you make an effort. The tests are fairly tricky, so study a lot and go to the reviews. If you work hard you can get an A!
I hate chemistry but seriously love this professor. She's quirky and so enthusiastic. She's willing to help and adapts to the needs of the students. Great person, easy class.
She is an amazing teacher but Chem 285 is just HARD no matter who you take it from. She is incredibly helpful and always there for you but expect to work and study a lot.
I loved Dr. Nielson. She really cares about her students and is willing to help. However, this is the hardest class I have ever taken. She makes it hard on purpose. 4 tests + final and they are so hard (68% average and no curve). She says she will curve the class at the end, but the current curve applied helped nobody. Loved her, hated the class.
This was the hardest class ever. I went to every single lecture and review and it was still difficult. Dr. Nielson is super nice though, she makes the class hard on purpose and I don't think her grading is all that great, but if you need someone to talk to, she is really personable and loves her students.
Awesome Teacher. She has an excellent grading system, very organized. She loves chemistry so it's enjoyable to listen to her lectures. To earn an A: 1. Attend class 2. Complete all assignments in the help lab and ask questions 3. Do all optional assignments such as practice exams 4. Go to reviews. 5. review exams and assignments.
She is very clear and simple in the way she teaches her class. She also applies things to real life situations which help a LOT. Very personal.
Dr. Nielson was probably the best teacher I have ever had at BYU. Ochem is going to be hard no matter who you take it from, but she will do everything she can to help you. I met with her 2-3 times a week the entire semester to go over questions and she was amazing. She sticks to the book. READ THE BOOK and do the problems! I got a B+.
Chem 285 is a really hard class. It takes a lot of work and studying to do well. Dr. Nielson is the best professor to take this class from. She is so helpful if you ask for it. She is always willing to meet with students and help them out. Meeting with her totally saved my grade. She really wants her students to succeed and helps them do it.
This was the hardest class I have ever taken or will take. I felt like every day was another impossible to understand lecture, and I didn't think that she was very helpful when answering questions. Her teaching style bothered me so much it was hard to concentrate on the material. Make sure to go to class every day!! Missing class isn't worth it.
Dr. Nielson is the most incredible professor I've ever had. Our class had over 150 people in it, yet she knew everyone by name. She really cares about you. That being said, her class is TOUGH. Homework and quizzes aren't bad but the tests are killer. Prepare to spend hours upon hours studying.
Before CHEM285 I have hated all of my Chem classes at BYU, but I was pleasantly surprised to really enjoy this course, and a large part of why I enjoyed it was because of Dr. Nielson. She is possibly the best professor I've had at BYU. She is very helpful and personable. She expects you to know your stuff, so it is far from an easy A.
Dr. Nielson makes Chem fun for everyone. The problem is that Chem 105 is naturally a beast. To do well you will have to READ BEFORE LECTURE. If not, you will probably be lost. She does great lectures, and loves blowing things up. Hopefully you get a good TA; that helps a lot. Few tests, but worth a lot of your grade, so do well on them. Good luck!
Nielson was my favorite professor I took this semester because she is so passionate about chemistry. She knows what she is talking about, and she also knows how to present material to the students so the lectures are extremely helpful. Do not skip. Tests, are hard, so I would HIGHLY suggest going to her office and asking questions/reviewing tests.
She truly cares about her students and is really passionate about chemistry. will do everything to give you the most help possible. It's a hard class, no matter who you take it from. tip: go into her office hours and look over your tests. If you are borderline and going in she will bump your grade. Imagine taking chem from Ms. Frizzle.
Has fun lectures, but doesn't actually help you in detail for what you are going to be tested on. It felt like I was being blasted with information every lecture. She would not take questions or go into more detail on a topic because she wanted to cover more information. This is the only class I have ever done poorly in. It also depends on your TA.
She skipped questions so that we could cover more material, even when no one understood it. Grades harshly for that which is not clearly taught. She seems passionate about chemistry and about being a 'professional chemistry teacher' but not about actually helping the students and seeing them succeed.
She is awesome. She goes a little fast in Lecture, but as far as OChem teachers go she's probably the best. The tests are not very hard at all and she curves all of them. She prepares you really well for your tests. It is a lot of work, and you need to do the homework even though it isn't graded. Definitely recommend her!! Not graded in deciles
She's awesome. Her class is difficult. But if you study the slides, read the book, basically just do everything she tells you to do at the beginning of the semester you can get an A.
She is an amazing teacher, very clear and really wants all the students to pass her class. The class is hard, but that is how Chem 105 is. If you go to lecture, read the book, go to the recitations and ask for help when needed you will get a good grade. Go and talk to her if you are struggling and she will help you out.
I'd say she's the best professor to take chem 105 from. She does move fast, and I did get lost in lecture a few times, but she is willing to work with you individually and does everything she can to make you succeed in a class that requires a lot of work by nature. Let's you take a note card into the test, which saved my grade!
Dr. Nielson made O chem a lot less horrible than I thought it would be. Yes it is still a very difficult class, but she really cares about her students and wants you to succeed. Shes fun, energetic and made me enjoy O chem. Her tests are hard, but straight forward. There's hw, but it counts as extra credit. Reading the textbook is super helpful!
Dr. Nielson is awesome! The class itself is hard, but she made it easier. There were a lot of fun demonstrations, especially the last day of class--so DON'T MISS IT! She's energetic and makes learning chemistry a little bit easier. Definitely going to take my other Chemistry classes from her!
I took Chem 351 and 352 from Nielson, because she is the BEST. She's hilarious, and you can tell she really cares about her students. Her lectures are great, she doesn't really go off the Powerpoint, she does a lot of chalkboard stuff. The tests are hard (its ochem) but she has practice exams on Learningsuite that are very similar to the real test!
Dr Nielson teaches from a physical chemistry background so she teaches the why behind reactions which is very helpful. She doesn't give crazy and unnecessary assignments but they are difficult if you haven't read and practiced. I would definitely take any Chemistry class I can from her.
I took 352 during spring term so some of the usual content was dropped due to time constraints. The remaining material did seem like trying to drink out of a fire hydrant at times but Dr Nielson still taught very well and to student's understanding. If you read the assigned sections before lecture and attend, you'll be alright.
Dr. Nielson is one of the most inspiring professors I've worked with. She's brilliant, cares passionately about every individual student, and avoids boring the class with useless information or tedious details. She keeps the class engaged and tests on material she covers in class. It's hard--it's O-Chem--but she is fantastic.
Dr. Nielson is the best teacher I have ever had!!!!! She is brilliant, passionate, caring and so much more! Yes organic chemistry is hard but her approach really helps you understand the material and understand reactions if you are willing to put for the work. Use her office hours, she really creates connections with her students and loves them.
She is one of my favorite professors a BYU! She absolutely loves chemistry and tries to make class more fun and exciting with reactions and explosions. She is super funny and entertaining! The class is very difficult and will take a lot of time (should be 5 credits), but you can pass if you study, go to lectures and TA labs, and do your homework.
She was a really good teacher, and she has a passion for chemistry. The biggest thing for me was how fast she moved in lectures. She switched her slides fast and I got half way through a lot of notes or equations and was left hanging a lot. The tests are really hard compared to the homework and reviews as well, but she has a skills sheet for tests.
Nielson is a great choice for 105. She really wants you to succeed and will take the time to answer your questions. She loves to do experiments and make class fun! You have to study and go to class, but overall it wasn't as hard as everyone makes it out to be. I loved this class!
Dr. Nielson is awesome! Chem 105 is a difficult class no matter who you take it from, but if you put in the work you will do well. She makes the class fun and has a lot of passion for chemistry, take it from her! You won't regret it.
Professor Nielson loves chemistry and makes the lectures very interesting, but the tests are very hard and the material is very difficult, especially if you haven't had exposure to the concepts in previous classes.
Nielson is the best! I really struggled with this class and she was always so willing to help me out. She is very easy to get in touch with outside of class and her lectures are as quirky and fun as she is! The class was tough (but its chemistry, when is it not?), but she does a great job preparing you for tests. Take it from her!
I would highly recommend her. She is funny, sincere, accessible, and loves her work. The class is heavy no matter what, but a lot of work is participation only, and her course is laid out clearly. There are plenty of resources available to get a good grade, it might just take some work. She explodes something every Friday.
You cannot miss a lecture. She goes really fast so you have to learn on the fly. Tests are long (usually took me 2.5-3.5 hours to take) and hard. You will have homework every single night. Any teacher would be about the same though. She lets you replace a midterm with the final if you do better and drops 20% of the homework and iClicker quizzes.
Dr Nielson was great. She comes across as very mother like. She teaches a little bit rushed, she moves very fast, but if you do your readings beforehand you can follow along pretty well. She's very caring on how she grades and she's very open to help you if you need. She's great.
Dr. Nielson is a pretty good teacher. She was not particularly spectacular, but she provided adequate resources to help you succeed in the class.
Prof. Nielson is great! I would take her again for this class. She is super cool and way funny. You have to put in a lot of work outside of class, and if you do you shouldn't have a problem. Hard tests and a quiz every Friday.
Dr. Nielson is a great professor! All the information we needed to know was either discussed in lecture, or practiced (and consequently learned) during recitation and homework. You have a homework to do every night, but it truly does help. She drops 20% of accumulative points for most things. I didn't read the book, but attending lecture is a must!
Dr. Nielson is a good professor, it's more the class that is challenging. You can get by with a decent grade not doing much work, but if you want a good grade it requires a lot of time. She is very willing to answer questions and is always in a good mood. Lectures moved a little fast, but that is mostly due to the amount of material.
She goes SO fast. Personally, I didn't think she was that great of a teacher, but she is very willing to help you outside of class. Don't ever skip class. Her tests are fair, but brutal. She's a really happy person and jokes around a lot. She loves blowing stuff up. Regardless, I didn't particularly like her.
Class attendance is very important! You do i-clickers almost every day, and they count on your grade. On Wednesdays you do Science Salons which count for 10 points. Fridays you take quizzes. Skipping class WILL hurt your grade. Go to office hours to go over your tests. Professor Nielson is very passionate about what she does and wants to help you.
I loved Professor Nielson!! I did take AP Chem in high school, but I had forgotten most of it. She was very accessible outside of class, and really cares about her students! Do the practice exams a head of time, and go to her with questions, and you'll do great!!
OChem is a really hard topic but Prof Nielson explains it really well. The best I've had of any chemistry lecturer. If you want to understand the topics though you have to go to lecture but trust me lectures are fun. She's super spirited and loves teaching and is good at it.
Dr. Nielsen is definitely on my all-time top 3 teachers list. She absolutely loves teaching (especially OChem), which makes a huge difference. Both classes I took from her were tough, and you've really gotta want to understand it to pull out an A. But her enthusiasm for the subject makes me want to put in the work, which is why I've done well.
Professor Nielson is one of my all-time favorite teachers. The class was super hard, but she made it manageable. She held weekly office hours that are super helpful and she takes time to personally answer questions. I would definitely take a class from her again!
Doctor Nielson is an amazing professor! She is so passionate about chemistry that it is infectious. She is good at explaining difficult concepts. THIS CLASS IS HARD. You cannot get by with doing the bare minimum; but she gives you lots of resources and has office hours that help immensely. She is funny and likes to blow things up.
Professor Nielson is a great choice for ochem. This class was very intense and difficult, but she explains the concepts well. You can tell she is passionate about chemistry and she makes the class pretty fun to be in. Just be prepared to put a lot of time in to this class.
I absolutely love Professor Nielson! This class is hard, and her tests are extremely hard. That said, Professor Neilson's office hours helped me so much and I really learned a lot. It is TOTALLY doable, it just requires a lot of effort, and even then you might not get the grade you want. Go to class, I had 2-3 pages of notes every day.
She is an incredible professor. She made O Chem bearable. Really though material, but she sets the class up so it's more manageable. Would highly recommend her!
Dr. Nielson made O-Chem a blast. Her enthusiasm and personality are contagious and she teaches very clearly. The class is super hard regardless of the professor, but I would 10/10 recommend Dr. Nielson for any Chemistry course.
I loved Professor Nielson!!! Chem 285 is so hard, but she always answered my constant email questions, and all my grading concerns. She is the reason I have got an A in the class!!
Dr. Nielson is the best. The book was a great tool, but I found that everything you need to know is taught in the lectures. The homework was a beast, but optional. You can do as little or as much as you need to in order to master the subject. OChem is a difficult class, but her expectations are clear. Quizzes almost every Wed. Great class.
Really great teacher, made me fall in love with organic chemistry and almost change my major! Just go to lectures and do the homework and you'll be fine. Don't listen to the horror stories that others pass around. Organic chemistry could be a very fine learning experience.
Nielson's great and she's certainly not any more difficult than any other Chem professor; 105 is just naturally tough. Take advantage of her office hours, she's very accommodating and friendly. Ask questions, stay on top of things, and you'll be okay.
Dr. Nielson is a wonderful professor. I had her years ago for Chem 106 and OChem and absolutely loved her. She explains the material in a clear way and seems passionate about what she teaches as well as helping students succeed. She was by far the best Chemistry teacher I ever had and one of my top professors overall in a science-heavy major.
TAKE O CHEM FROM DR. NIELSON! She's seriously so cool and really is passionate about chemistry. O chem is just tough, friends, but it at least will be pretty enjoyable with Dr. Nielson. She has a fiery personality and I will DEFINITELY be taking the second half of o chem from her. Tests are SO hard but doable.
Dr. Nielson is incredible. Very lively. Her passion for O chem is contagious. I seriously love O chem because of her. I'm genuinely sad that I only have a month left of 352. I gave her a 4 because ANY o chem class deserves a 5 in difficulty. She makes it doable so long as you attend lecture and read the book before each class. TAKE HER.
Absolutely amazing. I had her for Ochem 1 and 2, and Chem105. She explains concepts perfectly, tests are hard but manageable. She is willing to work with you and give points back on exams if you were graded to harshly. Remembers everyone's name. I wouldn't take chemistry from anyone but her! Ochem is hard, but she makes it manageable and fun!
O-Chem is crazy hard no matter what, however Dr. Nielson is a great prof. She really cares about her students and their success. She will always be willing to work with you, and help you figure out the best way to succeed in the class. I wish I would have gone to her office hours earlier in the semester to get help. After i did my scores went up
I loved the material that we learned in Organic Chemistry. I took both parts from Dr. Nielson. She cares for her students and wishes them all success. The Class itself presents the material in a way that is so difficult, especially on exams
Great teacher. There is a lot of material, but she is very clear about you need to know for the tests. Her lectures are engaging and helpful, if you do the readings. There are quizzes every week and exams every 3 weeks, so you can't fall behind on material if you want to do well. Definitely a hard class, but I'm glad I took it from Nielson.
Dr. Nielsen is the ONLY way to do Ochem at BYU. Her lectures are engaging, her tests are perfectly predictable (if you do the optional homework problems and practice exams), quizzes every week can buffer your grade. She cares about each student, remembers names, office hours are awesome. Enthusiasm is contagious. Take from her or dont take at all.
I've taken 3 classes from Dr. Nielson and she's a fantastic teacher. O Chem is going to be really hard no matter who you take it from, but Dr. Nielson taught in a way that everything made sense. She's great at answering questions in class and she's fairly accessible outside of class. I highly recommend.
Dr. Nielson is amazing in every way! She's the best at explaining concepts and is so receptive to questions you have about the material. You have to put in the work, as you do in any O-Chem class. She tries not to overwhelm you though. If you're taking 352 from her and didn't take 351 from her, make sure to touch up on molecular orbital theory.
She is by far hardest organic chemistry teacher at BYU. Awesome teacher, but her tests are way too hard. Also, she leaves the cut off for an A in her class at a 94%, while other organic chemistry professors have theirs around a 90%. I would avoid her and take from someone else.
Organic Chemistry demands time, diligence, and persistence. Despite the bad reputation, this class can be overcome with the help of amazing teachers like Professor Nielson. Radiating love for chemistry and students, she inspires every student to achieve their full potential and master the material. If you choose to succeed and put in the work, you
Dr. Nielson is one of my favorite teachers I have had at BYU. She is inspiring and loves chemistry and KNOWS HER STUFF. Never have I had a question at which should couldn't answer. She expects you to know the material (not just memorize) and her tests are not easy, but she teaches you how to succeed and wants all of her student to learn and excel.
Dr. Nielson is the best professor I have had at BYU! She is amazing and really loves Chemistry. She teaches in a way that helps you understand the principles instead of memorizing reactions! She helps students get excited about what most say is a boring class. She is very kind and willing to work with students. TAKE IT FROM HER!!!!
Dr. Nielson is a great person that loves her students. That being said, there is no possible way to prepare for her exams. Studying from the book, reviewing her lectures, attending office hours, and going to T.A reviews is not enough. The is nothing on the tests that you're familiar with; 25 multiple choice questions and 10ish long responses.
Dr. Nielson is one of the best professors I have had at BYU. Her class is not an easy A, but you seriously learn this stuff so well in her class. When I was studying for the MCAT I didn't review Ochem ever and I RARELY missed Ochem related questions. If you are taking the MCAT, I can't recommend her class enough.
Dr. Nielson is the best chemistry professor I've had at BYU! I got a C+ in 351 with someone else and an A- in her class with no curve. She teaches so clearly and really wants you to succeed, but she expects a lot from you! You HAVE to read and learn the material on your own before coming to "review" in class. Quizzes/homework are 50% of your grade.
I took ochem 2 from Dr. Nielson over the spring. It was a really fast paced class, but she structured it very well. She was very understanding and reasonable with grading, mostly because it was an online class. Both the TAs and Dr. Nielson are very caring and good at focusing on what you need for tests and quizzes. I would definitely recommend!!!
Dr. Nielson is the hardest professor I have ever taken. She has given us 6 midterms and we have two finals. Grades are put in using canvas and she hardly updates things, making it hard for you to know what your actual grade is in the class. I would avoid her class at all costs if you want to have any kind of a life and get a decent grade.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. She is the hardest Chemistry professor at BYU and makes it a point to make everything more difficult than it should be.
She is the only professor that I've ever had that has reached out to me personally to see how my life was going and ask if she could do anything for me when I did poorly on an exam. Really great professor!!
It was almost impossible to reach out to her and have her respond. She ignored several of my emails and when I finally got in touch, she disregarded things that I was struggling with. I found that very unprofessional. Her class is very difficult and takes up most of your time.
Dr. Nielson is so smart and one of my favorites! There were very frequent midterms but that forced me to stay on top of material. Recorded lectures (during covid) were super nice to watch after class. Expect to devote time to this class but tests were very fair and you will actually earn Ochem, which you need for dental/medical school tests.
take good notes in lectures because that will help you most on exams. the class is well structured. dr nielson makes you learn the material before going to lecture, which took some time but also helped solidify all that you read on your own. the textbook is your best friend. read it all. she loves what she teaches and will make you love it too.
Tests were extremely difficult, but she is honestly an amazing professor with very engaging lectures. Very good at explaining tough topics and very willing to help students however she can. Would recommend going to her office hours.
I've taken a lot of BYU classes, but this was by far the most difficult. Lectures seemed all over the place, and you'll spend a lot of time in the ochem lab. Tests every 3 weeks, so don't let yourself fall behind on homework or pre-class reading! I spent 20+ hours/week on this class. Ask for help frequently. Hard class, but she does care
O-chem is a hard class and this was my second attempt at it. Dr. Nielson made it much more enjoyable than my previous professor. She is excited about the subject and that rubs off on you. TA recitations were helpful for practicing homework problems. At the end of the semester she put on a chemistry magic show for us. That lifted moral before exams!
Dr. Nielson is a great professor for OChem. She loves the topics and that shows in her teaching. She cares about the students and is really accessible, especially after exams. OChem is a hard class, so be prepared to read, study, attend recitation, etc. to try and get as much prep as you can for the exams. Utilize the TAs and the help lab as well.
Nicest, smartest, and most caring professor! Ochem is crazy hard no matter who you take it from. I LOVE Professor Nielson and took Ochem 1 and 2 from her. She genuinely cares and wants you to succeed. READ THE TEXTBOOK. Do pre-class readings, homework and practice exams. Her tests are difficult, but she gives you all the tools you need to succeed.
Really engaging professor. 10/10. Taught the concepts well.
She is my favorite teacher I have ever had! My biggest suggestion is GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS! I learned the most about the material in a smaller group setting. She is so fun and has seriously made me LOVE ochem!! Tests are hard, but its ochem so that's expected. I would also recommend always being a chapter ahead because she does test ahead slightly
Organic chemistry is hard. Want to pass? Read the book and do thr problems before class. Go to her TA's. You won't have much one on one time with her. So they will be your saving grace. She teaches fast and you can get lost pretty easily. A lot of times she'll go into uncessecary depth on a topic. Doesn't answer many questions in class.
She is a great professor, but sometimes it can be really hard to follow along during lecture. I wouldn't take a class from her again just because I was always more confused than not after her lectures. Great professor, not the best teacher.
Prof Nielson is amazing! OCHEM is hard, but she really wants her students to succeed. If you put in the work, go to her office hours, talk to your TA, and read the textbook before class you will have no problem. Her tests are hard, but they prepare you for the ACS final. If you do the HW problems, you will do fine on her tests!
Don't miss lectures or you won't succeed, some of the things she teaches that are on the test aren't found in the textbook/on LS. It was frustrating that only 8% of the students got A's when the other Ochem teacher had 1/4 of the class get A's, so if you are good at chemistry you might want to pick a different teacher.
13 reasons why? With professor Nielson, you only need one.
Class is pretty manageable if you are on top of your reading and do all the problems in the book. The textbook is going to be your friend. Got multiple perfect scores exams by learning the why behind things instead of brute memorizing. Go to recitations bc she gives extra credit for questions everyone struggled with. Lectures fine but book better
No matter what you do the course is designed to be terrible. Professor Nielson is an amazing person but expects a lot from her students. She wants you to know EXACTLY why everything works the way it does and any lack of understanding shows in your grade. It's hard to understand what she's asking in some of her test questions but overall, she's good
