Don't take her class!She'd disguise her super harsh, cynical nature with her pretented humor sense. The BEST English instructor I've ever had. Grades very fairly. Gives clear instructions and expectations for EVERY paper and assignment. Make sure you know your grammar and punctuation. Otherwise, you may end up with a C or B in the class. If you avoid grammar mistakes, it's an easy +A -- as long as you do your work and follow instructions!!!

Olds is a bit intimidating at first since she is a well known writer in Europe. She is very clear (literally, sentence by sentence) on what she expects from her students. Be sure to make use of her extra credit(attending the writing lab). She gives vocabulary and reading quizzes often. This teacher definitely made me work for my grade.

In this class you will definitely learn how to become a better writer. I learned a new style of writing and now that I am at Cal poly it has made writing for certain classes a lot easier. I learned how to analyze material which I was not familiar with before. This class definitely stretched me and I was frustrated at times not sure what the writing required but I did spend about 40 hours hours on each essay. I received A's on both my essays plus ended with an A for the class. I would definitely recommend this , do not think you are just going to get by without doing the readings and work.

I took it in winter and it wasn't hard. 3 papers and the midterm and final are in class essays. Has interesting essay topics and quizzes are based off of that. However, Professor Olds taught us how to use MoodleRooms and told us what she expected. She is strict, but she is a great teacher. It's practically full-proof in any class that requires you to write an essay. She's extremely blunt, but I prefer that over a teacher who doesn't tell me what I need to hear. Recommended.

Great teacher, she gives great feedback on papers that helps you when you write your next one. Be sure to always do the rough drafts those are what get you the better grade on your final paper. She asks you to get two books, we didn't really use the MLA book so theres no point in buying it. She makes this english class easier on if you do the work.

Complete the 10 out of 12 necessary posts (most of them are just work completed in class). Follow the rubric/professor word for word and get easy A's on the essays. Essays are only graded on structure and MLA style. Easy final.

Olds is hilarious and awesome. I took her English 1A Hybrid class and it was not too much work. Everything is paced just right and it is so simple to pass as long as you do your work. Extra credit is even offered throughout the class. Her feedback is amazing and she tells you exactly how to fix your issues. She is amazing I recommend her 100%(:

She is the best. English is hard for me and my least favorite subject, yet she made it easy and fun. She helps her students understand exactly what is expected. She is also quirky which I really like. She has a silly sense of humor and her passion for teaching is obvious. Take her if you want to learn!

For those who are like me and hate classes that are lecture heavy, take this class! Most of the class time is spent on prewriting exercises that are essentially going to be implemented within essays. If you follow her rubric, there is no reason why you shouldn't get an A. Just make sure to do the work on time!

Olds gives the best feedback. She is the best English teacher I have ever had! She gives extra credit too. She is super hilarious. Be completely respectful as she does not deal with funny business. Turn in your papers on time and make sure you save enough time to complete them to the best of your ability and you are guaranteed a good grade(:

Took her hybrid class in summer. I have a hard time with writing papers and barley passed eng 68 with a C. But since Olds gives amazing feedback and most of the lecture is prewriting I passed her class with an A. She teaches amazing, I get A's on all my other papers because of her. Definitely recommend.

Olds is a great professor that gets along well with students. She's a tough grader, but as long as you complete the peer reviews, you'll get a decent grade.

Jennifer Olds is a fantastic professor! Really cool research & essay assignments. Lots of writing.. but that's what weekends are for, right? She gives good feedback on rough drafts so you have ample opportunity to perfect each assignment before the final grade. You will definitely leave this class with more confidence as a writer and as a student.

Can get a little off topic during lecture but overall great teacher. Is very accommodating and made me a more confident writer. Just make sure you follow her guidelines for essays and youre set.

EASY CLASS. even if you do poorly on one essay dont worry about it. midterm and final are in class (SO EASY). shes so helpful unlike other english teachers. very funny and nice. dont piss her off tho and get on her bad side. come to class, do the online posts and quizzes, easy points. and ask for help. Follow the guidelines and you will get an A. Do your homework and show up for class. There is extra credit, but not too much.

Just follow all of her instructions/feedback and you will get an A! I genuinely loved taking Professor Olds over the winter :) she's dramatic in the best way and gives awesome feedback on the spot!

Prof. Olds is an awesome professor! She gives great feedback on papers and is always accessible outside of class. There was a medium amount of homework. She can be sarcastic at times but it's all in good fun. Follow her instructions and pay attention in class you will do just fine.

This class is not an easy A, but it can be. What I mean by that is, do the work! If you follow her grading and essay structure hand outs, stay on top of posts in canvas, and do the extra credit you'll be fine. She will definitely teach you how to write great papers. The only down fall is that she can be rude. She has no problem embarrassing you.

If you're looking for a bit more flexibility in your schedule, take her hybrid class. I took it and went to class once a week, everything else is online. You need to follow her directions specifically in your essays to get full points. That's why it's important you to not miss class, or at least catch up if you do. You'll love her goofiness a lot:)

Her class is super easy as long as you don't miss class. Sometimes she'll outline a whole essay in class! She looks for specific things in the assignments so follow her instructions as much as you can. This is why you CAN'T miss class or you won't know how to do the assignments. She has office hours to help out, USE IT. You'll love her, good luck!

Amazing

She is a very harsh grader; however, if you follow what she says you will easily get an A. She provides all the needed materials and resources, and she provides many examples to show how an essay should be written. On the other hand, if you fail to proofread and such, she will not hold back. I have gotten roasted too many times in the one semester.

Be prepare to read a lot! If you are lazy and a whining person, really, consider to avoid her. Prof. is going to make you think. Also, expect to do heavy essays. Just follow the rules and you are going to be fine. Prof. Olds is amazing and the lecture is great!

Hands down best professor ever she is genuine and cares about the success of her students. I took 2 english classes with her because she was so amazing. Professor Olds is awesome. This class is not easy, and I did have hard time with the lectures. But luckily professor Olds was always willing to help and there was an assistant Lisa there to gave us directions. You need to put some effort so you can see the good result. As a non native student ended up with A+, I believe you can make it.

I took Professor Olds during Spring, it was her hybrid online class. At first I was worried about taking English 1A because I don't like reading or writing. She was very nice and cares about your grade. We spent most of the class in the computer lab doing research for our final paper. Super fun and easy. I would recommend.

Professor Olds is one of the best professors I had. Her class is all based on MLA format, so if you do not know MLA or how to write in that style, than do not take her. This is honors so she grades much harder. She will transform you into an amazing writer. For every essay, she gives out worksheets that explains what to write down to the sentence.

Professor Olds is an amazing horse loving woman. I took her hybrid English class. Gives alot of homework, weekly quizzes and canvas posts. She loves to crack jokes and she has dark humor(loved it). She is a tough grader but she gives you all the tools and tells you the expectations. Highly recommend! do the work or you wont pass! Loved her!

She is very encouraging to her students. She makes her requirements very clear, and she gives out detailed instructions. We have quizzes and discussion posts every week, 4 papers, and 1 bibliography. The workload is heavy and you have to read to answer the discussions. The work is worth it. I became a better writer learning from her.

She is a straight shooter and doesnt play around. You need to be ready to work for your A but it is definitely obtainable. Her assignments are clear, follow the rubric. She is able to be accessed outside of class. She is caring and encouraging in a stern way. She is pretty comical and witty. Most rewarding A I have received so far!

This cowgirl is a real gem! She really cares a lot about the writing process and growth. She's a little hard of hearing, so make sure you speak up when you talk! She's willing to help and give you resources. I would highly recommend her.

This English professor made me love all my essays. She does half online and a half in class and honestly its the perfect combination. She gives you an outline on what she wants and how she wants you to write it what more could you need? She really helps you mold your essay perfectly. She also provides extra credit. This class will be hard to fail.

Professor Olds is an incredible professor. Yes, she can be a wisecrack with the class but it's meant to loosen everyone up. She is very caring about her students and wants you to succeed. Works with you and provides clear feedback on assignments. Reading and assignments focuses on Mars to prepare you for the main papers.

Hybrid class until COVID. Takeher you won't regret it I was nervous but she gives you step by step of things wants in your essays! You do most of your work in class. She will message you asap unlike other profs. She's hilarious and a firecracker! She really cares about your writing & will give you good feedback.

I took Prof. Olds in Fall 2019 Hybrid class. Yes, she has high expectations of her students but stick with her and she will guide you through writing a perfect MLA paper worthy of unicorns and rainbows.

I Loved Professor Olds! Some of the reviews for her complained about respect. She is down to earth, and expects you to be a grown up. If you do not act like a college student, she will let you know and she has that right. Clear step by step instructions, and assignments. One of the best teachers you can have for english.

We had 3 essays, and one final essay. Yes, she's a tough grader when it comes to the papers, since she's a stickler for MLA. But everything else was also fairly easy, and it all related to the upcoming essay, so it cancelled out. Just know you have a week for a 8-10 page draft, so those weeks are always the craziest, but the rest are so easy!

She does prioritize how you structure your paper more than it's contents but as long as you follow her guides and look at the examples she gives the class isn't that difficult. English is by far my worst subject and I got an A did require me to have lots of tabs open to refer back to how she structured the writings.

she is a tough grader BUT she does make it clear what she wants. You just have to follow her PowerPoints for writing the paper and that's it! You do write A LOT so if you're not ready for that don't take her. It IS college if you need help ask! she helped me a lot when I didn't understand & she expects you to write properly so keep that in mind.

One of the sweetest professors & she gives very specific & detailed feedback. Some of the prompts are a little weird, but she practically gives a step by step guide on how to approach each essay (except the final) so if followed, youre almost guaranteed a good grade. A fairly easy A and a great connection to have!

Professor Olds is the best professor for English, hands down! She is very real with you which is what I was looking for. She grades according to her rubric, which should be fairly easy to follow. If you listen to her instruction and ask for help it shouldn't be impossible for you to receive an A.

The best English teacher in my opinion. She makes writing easy, even if you're not a strong writer. Just follow the MLA format and essay templates and you will get an A on your papers. She gives you all the tools, you just have to put in the work. 4 essays, 1 final, and weekly discussion posts and quizzes. She gives extra credit too. TAKE HER

Professor Olds was very nice and understanding. She provided all of the material we needed to succeed including what she wanted us to cite from in our papers. She gave good feedback and gave time for each paper to be written and fixed.

Be ready to write some LONG essays. The good thing about her is the fact that she will provide everything with pdf basically tells you what to write for every paragraph. Most essays are 7 paragraphs and around 7-9 pages long and she stresses A LOT with MLA format. Sometimes her comment is a bit rude and unprofessional. Overall an easy class.

If you hate writing essays, she's the professor to take. She outlines EVERYTHING for you and provides most (if not all) sources. You'll do fine as long as your thesis aligns with her sources. Plus she drops a lot of low quizzes and discussion posts grades. My grade went from a C- to a B after she dropped some assignments so I can't really complain.

This class is extremely essay heavy. You write 3 essays throughout the course, and 2 more for midterms and finals. She tells you exactly what you want on slide presentations. Follow them and have a good analysis for your essays and you'll be just fine. Her feedback can be a bit rough, but she tells you exactly what she's looking for.

Im not sure what the other harsh reviews are about. I took this professor for 1A and 1C and she was phenomenal. She is extremely straight forward and just asks to follow her outline. As long as you do that you are going to do well in the course.

I had a very good experience with this professor. I don't understand the negative reviews as she is very clear on what format to follow. She even gives the exact outline for the essays. Just follow them, look at the slides, and you'll be good. Also, of course points are going to be deducted for grammatical mistakes, it's an english class after all.

I would say she is nice and clear with what she expects (basically provides guidelines for everything). Essays are 90% of your grade, so nothing else matters. She gives chances to submit corrections on essays for more credit, but a lil harsh in grading, and I never feel like I improve with feedback. Take with caution if not an already good writer.
