I had her for both 105, and 233 (not by choice, unfortunately).. and I hated how she just read the slides to the class, and when she 'explains' one of the slides, she usually just paraphrases what is already written on the screen. Exams are fair, if you go to class, read the notes AND textbook. Did not like her at all, and I wouldn't recommend her.
Don't see why there are so many negative reviews her. Ok, so the way she talks is a bit annoying, but she does a great job of explaining. Tests were fine, but I didn't really like how she wouldn't go over everything in the book and yet test it, but whatever. Extremely helpful with the discussion board. Pay attention, and you will do fine.
Great professor. Dr. Passey is fantastically clear at explaining things. Yes, you have to read the text and attend class and read the syllabus. Don't ask dumb questions. And if you don't chat loudly in class, among other annoying first year class practices, you will be treated respectfully.
Was really put off by her after the first lecture, but she really grew on me and is very nice in person. You get used to her voice (even the "HOW-eveeerr"s). You do need to memorize all the important points from the text, and everything in the notes, but exams are easy. Very helpful and clear with explanations, especially on the discussion board!
Extremely generous on midterm/final exam long answer questions. Clear, concise and I had no problem approaching her if I had a question. I found the exams to be easy. You just need to make sure that you actually understand the underlying concepts in certain experiments that she outlines.
At first I found her alittle cold and pessimistic...but I do think she warms up after a while(or you just get use to her) Verry organized, helpful, knowledgeable. Lots of info to memorize in this class...found it a little difficult but the tests where fair. I would recommend her because her class is very well run
Spring class. She went thru an excessive amount of material & then said everything & anything was fair game on the exams which included extremely detailed lecture notes & text.. a bit power trip hungry.. You can help out ur Students.Read straight from slides, not cool.Course is interesting but this teacher made things very boring & Rigid.Wouldnt rec
Honestly...wayyyy to much reading, class was boring, and I HATED how this class was curved. My mark went DOWN 15% because of it. The highest mark on the final was a 79% ...doesn't that say something about the class and the teacher?? I will be redoing this class.
Do not recommend. Teacher is arrogant and class was to much reading.
Useless useless professor, she was terrible! Disrespected her students in front of everyone and I don't know how many times I heard her say, "Look in the syllabus" when anyone had a question. Boring slides you can get online, but you go to class to get her daily Qs she asks on tests
She may seem somewhat hostile at first but she is actually very nice and a fairly good professor. The class is a lot of theory which is not very interesting. Overall, passey is very clear and nice (go and talk to her!) and the class is ok.
...ugh, enough said.
I dont even know where to begin.. this prof made all students lives MISERABLE!! She talks in a manner where she thinks she is too smart for everyone, and she makes the tests extremely unfair. I honestly think she purposely tries to fail students/make them wanna commit.. no joke. Listen to me wisely.. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HER! Rotten person.
Dr. Passey was organized and really made every possible effort to set her students up for success. If you take her class, make sure that you keep up with all of your textbook reading and attend class all of the time! Also, TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE DISCUSSION BOARD! Dr. Passey will THOROUGHLY answer any questions you post
Most annoying voice in the world! Gave way too much info in her lectures & expected you to know the txt book! Really rude if you ever tried asking her a Q about the theories she presents.
If you?re a psych major and want to learn something useful then take a class with her. I personally found her VERY helpful. If you email her or post on the discussion board she will respond quickly (which i really appreciated) Read the textbook, come to class, take notes (especially of the videos) and use the discussion board, you will get an A!
Talks WAY too fast! Gets upset if you ask her to repeat or speak slower. Seemed rude but was personable when approached. Has something weird goin on with her hair...
Dr. Passey is an amazing prof. She is always extremely well prepared, presents the material in an interesting manner, and really knows her stuff. One of the best teachers I've had so far, I wish she taught more of my courses!
This woman is awful. Not only is her voice worse than nails on a chalkboard, she is extremely rude to her students. She talks down to the class during lectures like she's better than everybody there. Her tests are avrg, but she is certainly below.
awesome has a low tolerance for BS do the work, read the syllabus you will be fine
She presents a lot of information in her lectures, but after 4 years of university, I'd definitely rate her as one of the best professors. Her exams are EXTREMELY reasonable (especially the final - SO fair!)
One of the worst prof's at the U of A. She talks down to students. During office hours she is nice to some but not to others. Clearly she favorites. Her final exam is cummulative while other classes are not. She does not make it clear what you have to know and tests on everything even guest lectures. This class requires more work then 4 together.
Dr. Passey is extremely fair - the only people who complain are people who want their grade handed to them on a golden platter. Dr. Passey is VERY helpful with any questions and will respond in GREAT detail to any question posted on the class discussion website. She expects what any other professor expects, respect and effort, and will reward both.
Passey is a great teacher. The content is difficult, and that is unavoidable. She is incredibly organized and efficient, and helpful - she almost instantaneously responds to questions on eClass. If you are ready to put in the work by going to lectures, reading the textbook, and studying, you will do very well in this class.
She is a good proff but she needs to work on her attitude. Can be very rude. Reading the textbook and notes are a must to pass the exams. Midterm averages are always in the mid 70's. Likes to mention the fact that she went to Queen's university over and over again. BUT she will reply to questions on the message board immediately.
She ruined my University Career. I tried everything in her class to learn the content mind maps, and making my own questions. I even used questions she provided, and still felt like I had not learned any of the material. To make matters worse the questions she gives are only from the lecture and you have to go learn the whole textbook on your own.
All right now listen u all coz I'm bout to give u a very thorough description of Dr. Passey. so here it goes: 1) She knows her stuff, knows the names, dates, places and results of more than a million studies done in field of psychology. She has it memorized. Must have an IQ above 150. Real Knowledgeable. Lovely and clear notes
continued from last comment...clear notes, very good explanation of concepts and studies done and gives great analogies/examples. Uses class time very effectively. Use the eClass, she even writes a whole page of explanation for anyone. you don't understand something then ask her on eClass and she'll tell u. Exams are not easy but not tough either..
.. Exams are based on textbook and lectures and also any presentations not related to psychology like the sexual assault centre presentation or anything else that class time is spent on. She will test u on it FOR SURE. If you want a B then read and fully understand her notes. If u want A then textbook is a must. Lots of textbook related questions
...She doesn't smile unnecessarily and she won't be nice if ur not. She treats u like adults so behave urself :-). She will help if u ask for it but doesn't come after u, no1 does. I loved her class, never fell asleep, interesting material and great speaker she is. Fantastic. Love her examples, always crystal clear and eliminates confusion
Don't miss class. Don't talk during class or she'll pick on u in front of 500 ppl. Listen to what shes saying and you'll understand 90 of the material. Exams are not easy so do make sure that u spend that time studying or else don't expect a good grade coz it don't come easy in her class. I got an A, material is interesting so u won't get bored
i found the content to be very interesting. she is a very helpful prof and will answer your questions in great detail. attending class is a must she using examples from class on exams all the time.
Just Pass on Passey
She is wonderful. She sets out clear expectations and writes fair exams (although the wording can be tricky). Very helpful online discussion board to post questions and reasonable assignments to earn marks. Just go to class, read the book, and be respectful which really doesn't seem like to much to ask from students. You will be fine.
Thorough, don't really need to take notes because slides are so well done, exams are a bit difficult but fair, she is very enthusiastic about the material would recommend her to anyone.
she is amazing, one of the best profs. i was hesitant at first too, but after taking 105 and 233 with her. im looking for more classes she teaches. incredibly helpful, and very accessible, comes across as mean but really isnt. and tests are easy if u know ur stuff. read the textbook, she tells u thats its tested on, so nothing is a surpise
I would recommend her! I didn't attend a lot of the lectures b/c 9am classes killers.. BUT, I still did well b/c Passey clearly lays out her expectations. She posts a list of q's you should be able to answer for her exams and she responds to q's on eclass quickly and with tons of infos. I found that be incredibly helpful.. thanks Dr. Passey!
Fantastic! She is one of the most knowledgeable PSYCO profs I've ever had. She really knows her stuff and explains it really well. The class is not easy but if you go to lectures, take notes and read the textbook you will do well. Dr. Passey definitely want's students to do well and is willing to put the extra effort to help you.
Good prof, lectures can be kind of boring at 9am. Slides are mostly complete, but she will provide extra material in class WHICH SHE WILL TEST ON! If you're looking for an A, skip class at your own risk. Weekly 10-minute reading quizzes (textbook is a BORE!) and monthly short written assignments both take weight off final. Easy to do well.
I loved Passey for 105, she was really awesome and knew her stuff. If I could I'd definitely take another class with her, as her notes are thorough and she elaborates on them in class. HOWEVER, she honestly has a big ego that sometimes gets annoying, and it takes a lot of effort to get an A (reading text and memorizing all notes and videos shown).
I had Passey for 233 last year and did well. BEWARE of her higher level classes. PSYCO 305 will hit you like a tonne of bricks, massive workload, lots of memorization, writing, & participation. Exams were a mix of MC, short/long answer, and difficult if you aren't diligent, which is unlike her other course exams. If you don't need it, don't take it!
What more can you ask for in a prof? She is clear in her expectations, an engaging lecturer, has comprehensible notes, and is extremely helpful in the eclass discussions. She provides in-depth responses within an hour of the question being posted. I would definitely take one of her courses again.
Like any other psychology if you go to class, read the textbook, and do the assignments you will be fine. The tests are quite fair, however, the final tests on everything including notes, the textbook, assignments, and guest lectures. So make sure to cover everything. Passey is extremely helpful on e-class discussions and answers almost right away.
Passey is very knowledgeable & straightforward. Because I'm interested in psych, this worked well for me. If I didn't have much of an interest in the course, I would've found her style dry & boring.
Good prof. VERY high expectations, but very very clear. However, don't get creative, just do whatever you are told to do. Marks become more of a reflection of nit-picky details than knowledge of content. Lots of marks allocated to things unrelated to the content of the course, but on little details of format etc.pay extra close attention to detail
Excellent professor! Sends encouraging emails, answers thoroughly eclass questions/discussions, explains concepts clearly. Exams have a written component that is very easy to do well on because she provides the potential questions ahead of time.
She ruined psych for me. I used to enjoy it, but she is not a very cool prof. She has an "i am better than everyone" attitude and won't admit her mistakes. Midterms are easy enough, she said her final would be the same level of difficulty but ended up scaling it quite a bit because the average was terrible. A lot of course material.
Patronizing, and full of herself. Final was way harder in comparison to the midterm exams.
I've had her for 5 psyc classes already. She has great, organized notes. She has chapter readings, but you can easily pass by just reading the chapter summary. Her tests are a bit difficult (know different applications of terms). She is very helpful if you attend office hours and ask questions. DO THE "what you should know before exam" QUESTIONS!!!
Wonderful prof, knows her stuff and can back it up with interesting and relevant research. Detailed outline of what she expects in her syllabus and great notes. Covers lots of material so keep up with readings. Does not tolerate disrespect in the classroom but who can blame her? So sit down and pay attention and you will learn the coolest stuff
Fantastic educator! Wonderful notes, clear and concise, very helpful and genuinely interested in her student's learning.
Horrid prof, very very very full of herself. Notes suck, just pass on her. Would NOT recommend her to anyone. Made me want to never take another psychology class again. Lectures are dry, and very boring
Passey deserves to be full of herself because she knows her stuff. If her so-called attitude rubs you the wrong way stop taking her classes. I personally like it. Stay on her good side by doing your readings and paying attention in class, and you'll be fine. Don't forget to study the supplementary readings and researchers of the day!
Excellent proff. My favourite by far. 305 is harder then her lower level courses but so it should be. Attend class, read the assigned papers and follow the syllabus. Can't believe that I can't find another class with her this term.
I am a psych minor and had to take this class to fill up credits. Never knew a 100 level clas would be so tough, the teacher is clear and the material is easy but the exams are out of control. Went into final with 88 but the final was totally confusing. she doesnt put the MC in order of sections, everything is scattered and abstract.Rattling!!
Passey is a really great teacher, if sarcastic. Exams are easy if you go to class and she's really approachable despite the aforementioned sarcasm (and abrasiveness). Really knows her stuff.
The first few sections were pretty boring but she does try to make the class interesting. Exams aren't to bad as long as you go to class and read the text book.
She clearly knows a lot about what she is talking about, she is very clear, if you go to class, which she does make interesting and easy to listen, the tests are not hard. The tests are 80% MC and 1 (or 2 for final) short question out of 5 that she gives out the class before the exam. I definitely recommend her.
BEST PROF EVER! I have altered my whole schedule just to get in her classes. She is fair, and super helpful outside of class. Her lectures are clear and intruiging. She is very intelligent, and is a great mentor. She usually does midterm/final review sessions as well!
If you read the notes and textbook, her class is super easy and attendance is not mandatory. She has review classes before exams and also gives out a few potential long answer questions before the exams and uses two of them so that it another bonus. Tests are not hard if you read the book/the notes she puts online. Absolutely recommend her.
She is one of the better profs out there. Explains things well and uses examples to illustrate. Only complaint is lectures are sometimes a bit dry. She has a funny sense of humor. Textbook is required for her class so be prepared to work hard to get a good grade.
Great prof. She might seem pretty intimidating/scary at first, but she's really not at all that bad. I liked the material (past the beginning portion), and she tries to make it interesting. If you want a decent mark, try to get into her class. She does give you marks if you read the material beforehand (Reading Assessments).
She starts off really cold and condescending, but knows her stuff and seems to be a genuinely nice person after you get to know her. However her lectures are quite dry and she generally just reads off the slides and gives a few examples that often appear on the exams. Decent prof but I wouldn't recommend taking her class if it's avoidable.
Initially came off intimidating, but I've really enjoyed taking her class. Her exams are quite fair, just read the textbook and go to class. She makes a great effort to answer any questions through a discussion forum, and gives you 5 potential long answer questions before each of her exams, and then only uses one. I'd recommend her!
I've had Dr. Passey as my prof in over 5 courses. She is the best. she bends over backwards to help you; she provides great test preps "questions you should know" and "test your knowledge". She is always respectful and understanding. GET THIS PROF, you will NOT regret it.
I LOVE LOVEEE Dr. Passey. I was very worried about this course but it was really not much differen't than 105 except for more work lol. Super easy exams and she answers questions in details which is really nice. I LOVE personality. I love psych.
She likes to use a lot of questions from topics covered in class that aren't in notes or text, so if you prefer to skip class and learn on your own - Choose a different class.
Dr. Passey is a fantastic prof. At first she seems a bit condescending, but she really is a very nice person. She genuinely wants her students to succeed. If you need help, go see her during office hours. I learned a lot in her classes and highly recommend her.
This class could be really awful but Dr. Passey makes it tolerable. Lectures are straightforward, and exams are challenging. Also, there are a LOT of papers so be prepared to put a lot of time into this class.
This class is very dry and contains a lot of work. You must be willing to put the time and effort in writing research paper. Class is mandatory. Exams are challenging (written and M/C). Assignments are time consuming and difficult. Prof is not really helpful, she is bias to those that participate in class. Only take this course if NECESSARY!
I LOVED Dr. Passey. One of the best profs i have ever had, but word of advice: don't be the annoying person in class who has a personal comment for every little thing. She will get outwardly annoyed, which is hilarious to watch, but I'd hate to be on the receiving end of it.
AMAZING PROF. I have taken ALL of her courses and have enjoyed every single one! She doesn't give away marks, but if you follow her rubrics and outlines it is hard not to get an A! Her classes have great structure, and provides students with amazing notes. Go to class, and see her during office hours- she is very informative! LOVE PASSEY!!!
Loved her! Course was way easier than 104
Class is interesting and she gives so many clues before the exams. You can tell she is passionate about psychology. She is awesome!
She sometimes is hard to listen to in lecture because often she is reciting straight from the slides. Other than that minor detail, I found her a great lecturer. she gives many obvious hints about what will be on the exams during lectures, and the material is interesting.
She is an excellent prof. Yes, she read from the slides but class wasn't boring. She added in information along with slides that may be tested on. She has a funny sense of humor which makes class interesting. She also gives practice/potential questions before exams letting you know what to expect. Overall just a great prof.
I thought she was a really good prof. made things simple & her exams were pretty easy. weird sense of humor though. the only annoying things were the weekly quizzes and journal entries! but overall I recommend her.
Fantastic! Found her class quite interesting. Exams were really straight forward as long as you've read the text and know her notes. She is quite up front, but she knows her stuff. Overall really great.
Class has many unnecessarily time consuming assignments. She gave the class an "incentive" for our last assignment, stating if we did significantly better, as a class, on the last assignment, she would increase the whole class' grades. However, this was based on a faulty assumption that we hadn't put forth our best effort before.... Ridiculous
Dr. Passey is an amazing prof! Her tests were very fair, just know her notes and the textbook. I found that doing summary notes of each chapter helped me a lot. Class is mandatory as she adds extra examples/info which she will test on. Reading assignments and journals took time but an easy grade booster. Interesting material - highly recommend !
AMAZING PROF!! Great lecturer adding more details during class, engaging & gives the opportunity to have potential short answer Q before test. 15% EASY quizzes/journal entries!! A bit full of herself but right fully so, she knows her stuff & is passionate. Tests are fair and straightforward, no tricks. Grade booster, though attendance is mandatory.
Dr. Passey is just amazing. I've been in 2 of her classes already, and she did not disappoint. She is really helpful in and outside of class, and she really knows her stuff. One thing though: you really have to put effort in her class! You really need to! I just hated the fact that TAs checked the other papers because they were harsher in marking!
Jenn is an amazing prof! She knows her stuff inside and out, and explains things superbly. However, for a 200 level course, this class is A LOT of work. Her assignments are marked hard. Although the class material is dry, she does explain it well and makes it interesting. Class content is extremely helpful for other classes. Highly recommend!
Dr. Passey is tough, but awesome. She is incredibly knowledgable, loves what she does, and uses some really interesting methods to help information "stick". She ALWAYS takes the time to help students, and really wants them to do well. She expects a lot out of her students- because she puts a lot in, too. Highly recommended!
Jennifer is the BEST prof I have ever had by FAR. She may seem cold at first but she is a very kind hearted person. If you go to class and put in some effort you will do very well! She does her best to give everyone multiple opportunities to do well in her classes. Again, she is the BEST PROF I HAVE EVER HAD!!!
Dr. Passey is an incredible professor. She expects a lot, which is completely within reason, as she gives a lot in return. She really pushes her students to achieve. If you're here to grow and to learn, do not miss the opportunity to share a classroom with her. Great prof, and an incredible human being.
Not sure why people are saying her class is difficult. I had never taken a class with her before, and I wish I had the chance to take more with Passey. Explains things beautifully, very fair tests, and very helpful if needed. She comes off as rude or arrogant because she's confident in her knowledge on the subject, which is a great asset.
A lot of work in her class, but she is really easy to pay attention to in lectures. She expects a lot but is very helpful. I learned a lot from this professor. 3 exams which were fair, a group project which was easy to get a good mark on, an essay and 3 assignments best two out of three marks which were not difficult.
Awesome class! Dr. Passey provides very clear instruction and is super helpful with assignments and the final paper. Exams can be challenging, but if you pay attention during lectures its easy to do well. Highly recommended.
I got 100 % on the assignments, but only got a B+ on the Midterms, and still finished the class with an A. so If exams aren't your strong suit, you still can do well in this class. Make sure to send her your assignments before you hand them in! shes very willing to look over assignments the TA marked if you feel you deserve more marks Very helpful!
Easiest course I've taken in university. She's nice and funny, and helpful if you wanna ask questions one on one. Read the textbook and attend classes and you're golden. I just reviewed slides before exams. Assignments were great, easy points!
She is very condescending! Her lectures just seem like she is yelling at you. Although the tests are simple and her assignments are marked quite easily, the whole 50 minutes you feel as though she is mad at you. I would recommend the course due to the interesting and easy content but I would pass on her as a prof.
Didn't enjoy Jennifer, tests were abnormally difficult tested things not covered in class and very small details only read in the text book. She seems very condescending and not passionate about psychology. Does not engage the class
Passey is an easy prof to listen to because she talks so colloquially, but she's also very nitpicky. She freaks out over the smallest things and treats her students without respect, as if they are children. I liked her teaching style, she is easy to understand but I don't like her as a person. The final project also took too much work.
Contrary to popular belief, this is not a Statistics course (phew). It is, however, quite demanding. Dr. Passey balances the workload with clear expectations on assignments (34 & 1 final) and the option to drop some lowest marks. Impromptu in-class worksheets (10) and regular reading quizzes (79) keep the content salient, so long as you keep up.
Honestly, I have no complaints. Take her class, she is a very fair lecturer. Her first and third midterm were pretty hard, but the second one was a joke. The midterms account for 50% of the course, so it wasn't a big deal. Assignments, she is very picky, however, if you email her your assignment, she will pretty much pre mark it. Easy A for me.
The class material is boring to begin with but she does not help at all. She talks in monotone and it sounds like she is talking down to everyone. She explains things by using dictionary definitions that use the word she is try to teach in the definition. She creates a LOT of work for a 200 level class. I recommend taking someone else.
Great class- Dr. Passey is helpful and gives grading rubrics for everything so it's hard to fail assignments. All exams were fair and the lectures are super interesting. Highly recommended.
Dr. Passey is great. She will look over your assignments and give feedback to you before the due date. Additionally, the assignments and final paper all have a very specific rubric, where if you make sure you have every point you can get 100%. The midterm was all MC and a bit tricky but not unreasonable.
This class is a lot of work, but great if you are a Psych student that really wants to improve their writing skills. All assignments have rubrics so it is really clear what her expectations are. Midterm and final were pretty tricky, but not unreasonable. Make sure to read the textbook!
This class is lots of work but the assignments are pretty easy. Dr. Passey gives every assignment a clear rubric and reviews your work if you ask. Midterm and final were pretty tricky I found with more emphasis on memorization than understanding but the assignments really help boost your mark.
Jen is the most amazing prof I have EVER had. She tells you EXACTLY what you need to do well in her class and goes above and beyond to give everyone a shot at getting a good grade. She's very ethical and fair, so don't try to scam your way into an A. She has been the most inspiring prof I've ever had, and one of the best, kindest people I've met.
With assignments, quizzes and participation marks due each week I figured it would be hard to stay on track and therefore do well. But she gives you a safety net if you miss classes or don't do very well in an assignment, which allowed me to improve my mark significantly. She has a lot of people come to her office, but she's glad to help!
Definitely a challenging class. Dr. Passey pushes you to work hard but you will learn so much more from this learning format than the typical midterm-final classes. Reading assignments were great to keep you on track. Assignments were tough. Midterm easy multiple choice. She's incredibly clear and detailed, and gives you SO MUCH HELP at office hrs!
One of the greatest profs I have had in psychology. Be prepared to work for your mark but that being said it is a super fair grading scheme. She is so helpful in her office hours and if you email her any assignment she will give you tons of feedback on it! I think a lot of students don't take advantage of how much she is willing to help. Awesome.
This is not an easy A class! Dr Passey really makes you work in this class. Textbook readings are required (online quizzes), assignments, final paper, exams and in-class assignments are what you can expect. She is extremely helpful though and will do anything to ensure the students' success. Lectures are interesting even though the subject is dry.
I learned so much from Dr. Passey! Yes, she assigns a heavy workload, but in retrospect, I found every aspect of the course to be reasonable and valuable. The assignments give you experience writing a research paper, and the quizzesworksheets help you stay on-track with synthesizing the material. Great prof who cares for her students!
2 MTs, no final. Textbook is cheap & chapters are short; also, not too many articles. 4 assignments, 1 paper & other easy marks. Lectures are interesting enough, she's clear & sometimes funny! Tests aren't as scary as she makes them sound. She even got to know everyone's names! Seems a bit scary at first, but quite approachable if you need help.
A lot of work in this class. Although she will help you if you ask she is very unapproachable and sarcastic in her manner. Also make sure you read every single detail on assignments as there is small details that if you miss have unfair punishments. Unless your very interested in the subject topic which i doubt many people are then don't take it
Dr. Passey is a tough but fair professor. She is very clear about her expectations and takes the time to give you feedback on assignments during office hours. So go! My scientific writing has improved dramatically because of this course. Lectures build on textbook material instead of just repeating it.
Dr. Passey offered ample opportunity to succeed in this class. Allowing you to drop the lowest assignment and class participation grade. Any discrepancy with the marking was treated fairly. She was more than willing to read over assignments and offer assistance in anyway. Tests were moderately hard. Overall enjoyable class
Way too much effort for a second year class. She makes it so you don't have time for other classes and makes the exams very difficult. Definitely recommend another prof.
I took 2 of Dr. Passey's 300 level classes last year (342 and 347) and look forward to another one next semester. Workload is demanding but she is more than willing to go over assignments and papers and help you in any way possible. She drops your lowest assignment grade as well. Super nice during office hours. Gives fair exams. No final.
This is the most tedious 200 level class you will ever take. Ludicrous amounts of homework, tests on everything, and has one ill defined, very challenging statistics assignment. Don't recommend. Take this when someone else teaches it.
Wonderful! Sassy and can be really intense, and doesn't put up with crap from students, but overall very fair and just wants everyone to learn. Make sure you go to class because she takes participation marks.
Although there is a lot of work required outside of class (e.g., reading the textbook to do online quizzes, writing papers), Dr. Passey makes it easy to do well in her course by giving you a lot of chances to learn and improve. The final paper was a breeze, you've basically written the whole thing before the last month of classes.
One of the best profs I've had and a really good instructor. Might seem intimidating day 1 but she is so helpful and really wants you to succeed. Learning how to write a proper research paper makes this one of he most useful courses you could take. Workload is completely average IMO and actually beneficial to you. She makes it easy to do well.
This was my 3rd class with Passey and I enjoyed it! There were some changes made compared to last year with regards to assignments which I liked. There is no final, just a paper due the day the final would be on. Exams are fair and not that hard. She's super nice during office hours. I'll miss her after graduating. She was by far my favourite prof
She is an intriguing lecturer &keeps you engaged. There are multiple in- class group projects and it was always a gamble as to who was in your group. This was frustrating because the dominating and most opinionated aren't always the smartest. I felt that the rubric for the final paper was not very detailed, there were seemingly hidden expectations.
There were a lot of things I really liked about this course and the instruction. Tests were straightforward and very fair. Material was definitely presented clearly and in an interesting way. However, she is a very hard marker. I also felt there was too much reading (2 ch. & 2 long articles per class) & group projects (took up 1/3 of class time)
I felt this instructor can be unnecessarily intimidating and unclear sometimes. My personal experience from the class was definitely not good.
I found this class extremely demanding and stressful. Partipation worksheets (10% of final mark) were given almost every day of class-- not enough time was given to finish(usually only 10 minutes.) Chapter quizes twice a week(10%), 4 assignments and final paper. She could be condescending at times and did not give much help .Do not take her class.
Although this class is challenging in that you have to manage your time and put the work in, I found Dr. Passey to be extremely helpful and knowledgable. If you make use of her office hours, especially for assignments, she provides so much help! She drops your lowest marks, and assignments 1-3 are parts of the final paper, which makes it easier!
Dr. Passey gets a bad rap for calling out misbehaving students in class, but she is very helpful and genuinely cares about your success. She won't baby you. Clear and fair with her expectations, no BS. Assignment heavy, but it took my scientific writing skills from zero to hero. This course will better you as a Psych student. Worth the work.
Dr. Passey is a phenomenal. She isn't stern, she just doesn't put up with BS. Grow up-you're in university. If you're a student that likes independence, she is the prof for you. Even if you do have questions, she is super helpful during class and office hours. There is a lot of work required, but it also gives you room for improving your grade.
Dr. Passey was fairly straight forward and helpful, however, she definitely did not give us enough time to finish her extremely long tests and she expects quite a bit of work out of you. If you're looking for a GPA booster, do not take this class. The material was really interesting though.
The work load was extreme (multiple in class assignments, group presentations, exams, final project). Definitely not a GPA booster by any means. She's arrogant and downright rude to students. Her exams are hard and you have to know a ton of information (random things said in lecture, 8+ chapters which don't overlap , 5+ research papers). Avoid her
Lectures are structured and densely packed, but because there are 8 in-class assignments, the lecture material isn't as heavy as it appears. Dr. Passey is funny, straight forward, fair, and there is no guessing about what she wants. If you work hard, show up to class, and go over the readings a few times, you will get an excellent grade!
There are many opportunities to learn from past mistakes since, for each type of assignment, you are able to drop the lowest marks. The final paper is practically finished well before it's due because it is written in increments throughout the term. Quizzes and in-class participation are great for boosting grades and reviewing material. Very fun!
RUUUDE PROF. AVOID HER. the class is good but she is a awful prof. TOUGH MARKER.
Classes are a bit dry at times. Course doesn't cover much so there is a lot of focus on specific items for enough time it starts to get boring. She does connect with material though and does her best to make the material interesting. Difficult to contact at certain points and class can be cancelled on fairly short notice.
She was excellent. Speaks fast and covers a LOT in a 50 minute lecture, so you definitely have to be paying attention in class. But she recorded the lectures and posted them online. Was much better than 104, imo. Had journal assignments and textbook quizzes which were kind of annoying but were overall easy marks. Would recommend!
Her lectures where engaging. Even though she makes you work for your grades, she truely cares about the success of her students: has an online question board, weekly in person/online office hours, and alway more than happy to go above and beyond when answering! Her tests were very fair (good mixture of the textbook and lecture notes).
I honestly enjoyed going to lectures and listening to Dr. Passey because she truly knows her stuff. She obviously loves what she teaches. I liked the use of the discussion forum and how quickly she and other students responded. Tests were decently tough, just make sure to read the textbook and study your quizzes.
The course itself is dry and I think as a result she struggles to engage the students effectively in class. Her lectures feel scripted so you might find it hard to pay attention at times. There is a too much coursework so if you have a 5-course load dont take this. Overly tough marker (IMO). Find a better prof if you can, but she is okay.
mandatory textbook, generic slides you need to attend lectures. says "such that" way too much. very funny/personable. hard to get answers from as she required you to ask questions on the eclass forum, no emails.
Dr. Passey is a knowledgeable, but very unapproachable person. Her lecture recordings are appreciated, but she is a big fan of regular in-class participation exercises, and expects a very specific and high level understanding of APA/MLA for written papers. The only thing I liked was that she drops the lowest graded mark on material to boost GPA
The grading is inconsistent and the feedback is always minimal, the class is not curved. The papers will take all of your time and stress you out. She is only available during her office hours, don't even bother trying to reach out to her outside of it. Very intimidating and gives one-word answers, makes her seem sassy and annoyed.
She knows her stuff but really hard to stay awake during her class because lectures are boring. A quiz on the material every week before you even learn it and a journal entry weekly. Waaaay too much work for a first year class and the exams were not easy. Not a fan or her or the class structure.
Dr. Passey is really nice and answers tons of questions on eclass forum. Her voice is a little monotone and I couldn't help but sleep in class. Her notes are pretty great, posts recordings online, not too much (tedious) homework. Make sure to annotate your notes. I didn't read the textbook, but you should for the extra points.
I found Psych 105 to be quite a challenging class. You are expected to read the textbook. For every chapter, Dr. Passey releases an online 5-question quiz based on the reading BEFORE she teaches the material. Exams are difficult. As a student with learning disabilities, I really appreciated her posting all of the audio from her lectures online!
Lectures were clear and interesting. She recorded her lectures which was a huge plus. Journal entries and reading quizzes were annoying and tedious, but essentially free marks.
Dr. Passey is a great prof. She knows her material and I felt the lectures were conducted in a way that the material was clear. My main issue is that, for a first year psychology course, it was WAY too much work. It was my only 100 level course and by far the most work in terms of reading and homework.
Dr. Passey speaks EXTREMELY fast and condenses a lot of material into her lectures that are not in her notes, but are definitely going to be tested. There were quizzes and journals due every week, so it was more work than normal 100 level course. Her tests aren't hard but tests a lot of text book questions with a lot of detail.
Read the textbook, study lectures and THE GUEST LECTURE there were like 5 questions on the final. overall fair exams easy quizzes and easy research participation marks
for a 100 level class there was so much to do. her midterms were easy but her final was assaulting. The weekly quizzes and journal entries are annoying but overall boost your grade. She posts all her audio from lectures online and is extremely accessible and knowledgeable.
Lectures were clear and easy to understand, but you definitely need to pay attention and take extra notes. The quizzes and journal entries are tedious but they were a good grade booster at the end of it all. In retrospect, midterms felt much easier than the final. She's knowledgeable but not very approachable.
Jen is a tough but VERY fair prof. Expect some in class assignments. She gives you the rubric, though, so they're an easy 9/10 if you write what she wants. Make sure to skim the text as there are some MC questions directly out of the text. She tests mostly from her in-class notes (which follow the text very well). Would definitely take again!!
Dr. Passey's class was so much fun to attend. Like all intro psych classes, you're going to need to read and know the textbook. She really cares about her students and is always willing to help if you need it. Psych 105 is an interesting and relatively easy course if you put the work in. Go to lecture and consider taking notes on what she says.
In 212 a NEW teaching style where she wouldn't lecture at all and expected you to understand the material via text. Not good if you know nothing about research methods. Mandatory attendance because it counts as marks and assignments were brutal. 5 assignments and the TA that marker was brutal. I would recommend her 341 class but not this one!!
The sem Passey used a new active learning approach to teaching this course. I really enjoyed it--lots of worksheets handed out in class (not for marks), you have to complete 12/14 quizzes, 5 assignments (4 of which you get full marks if you just finish and hand them in), and a full paper. She is super helpful if you go to her office hours.
Dr. Passey was an excellent lecturer and very knowledgable. However, she spoke way too fast to ever keep up (posted audio lectures which was very much needed). This class was time consuming because you had to frequently go back to the audio to get important information. She's also very passive aggressive and not easily approachable. tricky exams.
I enjoyed the class and feel like I gained from it. There were three downsides to this prof: The tests are tricky, she can seem quite rude to her students at times, and she has extremely high formatting expectations. That being said I would still definitely recommend her as I feel like taking this class made me a better university student.
Vtest no good
Jennifer makes Psyco 105 harder than others. You have to answer a long answer question in your midterm and final though she may give you some samples. Grades are based on your exam, RP, journal and reading quiz. Reading the textbook is pretty important!!! She will post her lecture recording onto e-class, which is a booster for your review.
Dr. Passey deeply cares about her students learning. She thoroughly replies to student questions on eClass, has thoughtful, clear, and engaging lectures, and supplies lecture audio for every class. She is no-nonsense for disrespectful behaviour, which makes me respect her even more. She made this intro course meaningful and enjoyable.
Did not seem to care about the class or the students.
I do like Dr. Passey as a person, however, she's not the best prof - at least not with this class. I took this class to deepen my understanding/knowledge of research methods, but I feel like i should get a cheque from the university for the amount I taught myself. Never lectures, pretty much all active learning. Not a fan of this class format
The course all-in all is really easy and straightforward. Not a lot of specific info to memorize. I really didn't enjoy coming to this class. Although she is a good prof and makes the info easy to memorize, she came off as very rude and condescending towards her students at times.
The weekly quizzes and journals are so annoying and she lives to call people out in class. If you want a stress free 100 level psych course choose a different prof
MANY assignments and heavy workload, takes out your worst ones though. 2 MC+written midterms. gives you one hour ONLY (its a 1h 20 min class). first test was too condensed, second one was better. tests are VERY fair and straightforward, no tricks. she explains stuff really well. gives good feedback + nice person. final is a research paper.
Do NOT take psych 212 with this prof. This class will make you feel like whatever you do does not matter- your still going to get a subpar grade or not the grade you were expecting
inconsistent grading, peer review sessions are a mess, too much asked for a 200 level class. We're not trying to publish after taking this class. We want to learn intro to research methods. Active learning approach did nothing for me and my peers in the class, but that may be just us. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH this prof.
I hated the active learning approach. I just wrote the final and got destroyed. Why? Because I had to learn everything in depth thru the book. I paid for lecturing. I didn't pay for interactive games and activities. Nightmare of a class. The way concepts were assessed on the final required MASTERY of info in depth. Do not take. 200 level?morelike5x
Dr. Passey is super passionate about what she teaches. She tends to call people out in class if they're talking during lectures but other than that, she's super nice and approachable. She makes psychology super interesting and explains things with examples really well. I loved this class and she was an overall great prof!
Worst prof at the Uofa, don't take the class with her. She's very rude and doesn't care about her students. She expects way too much for a 100 level class
To do good on her exams you have to know the textbook inside and out and memorize everything she says. Jennifer is unapproachable and disrespectful. If you have a class with her do yourself a favour and drop it. HORRIBLE PROF!
If you're reading this review and you still decide to take her class, don't blame anyone for your mark and sanity except yourself. I'm an honors psych arts student, and i'd rather drop honors than taking another class with this prof, or even this class. In the long run, Passey destroyed my GPA. DO NOT take this class. Whatever you do will nothelp
This woman makes a 100 level course way harder than it needs to be. Journals and reading quizzes are due almost every week, and they rarely lined up with the lecture material. She puts VERY long answer questions on her tests which have at least 5 parts each. Basically memorize the textbook because the questions are so specific its ridiculous.
If you aren't prepared to put the work in, don't take a class with Dr. Passey. For 212 if you complete all of the assignments given outside of class you can earn an easy 20% on your grade. She is very clear with her expectations for this class, if active learning isn't your thing maybe this isn't the class for you.
This class is a lot of work for a 2nd-year course. Jen is amazing though and the criteria for all of the assignments are VERY clear. Although the active learning days are quite boring, they're helpful for learning the content. The APA days are SO helpful for assignments so don't skip those. This class may seem dull but you learn a lot!
Passey has the ability to be a great prof but her exams are way too hard and she makes you do too many projects for a 100 level class. She also loves to call on people which can give you anxiety in a class of 400. Would not recommend at all but if you have to just prioritise reading the textbook and studying hard
Dr. Passey is very no-nonsense, but if you can follow instructions then her classes shouldn't be a problem for you. She provides clear grading criteria, has organized notes, and sometimes gives specific hints as to what will be tested. However, if you don't like in-class assignments or reading a textbook, I would suggest choosing a different prof.
One of the most unapproachable profs I have ever had. She is so rude and entitled it's crazy. You need to memorize the entire textbook and also everything she says to have a shot at doing well. Seems like her exams are a mix of random textbook exam bank questions and some of her own from small details in lecture. Take literally any other prof.
The amount of work you do for this class is ridiculous; weekly quizzes for each chapter, the longest research paper ever known to man. Her lectures are brief and only cover the hardest part of the chapter instead of everything. For exams you get 1 min for every question. The stress is not worth it. If you need this class take it with anyone else
I loved PSYCO105 with Passey! Her lectures were very engaging. She gives a lot of mini assignments (textbook reading quizzes and journal entries to help you remember the info) which helped me to develop better study habits, keep up on my readings, and boosted my overall grade. 100% would recommend.
Toughest grader ever. Hard to know what she wants in writing assignments. I have never received bad marks on writing assignments until this class.
lots of homework pick favourites (very mean to those that she doesn't like) does not answer questions directly through email majority of the materials are needed to be self-studied have misleading instructions for assignments
materials covered in this class is great but Passey made it extremely unenjoyable I hope there are other profs teaching this course
Rubric was clear but tough grader on assignments. Many students had low marks on the written assignments and it felt like a journalism class when doing those assignments rather than a psychology class. Student asked her for 30 extra mins on final exam and she didn't budge not even a bit. She could have at least added 10-15 extra mins.
While there is a decent amount of material, Dr. Passey gives you a lot of tools to help you succeed. The in-class activities help to make sure you understand the concepts, and the tests were fair if you prepared. Get assignments done sooner than later if you can!
You can have a PHD in psychology and still get a C in this class. The assessments test your ability to write down every single detail that she mentions during lectures, and do every single tedious reading or assignment, not your understanding of psychology. Dr. Passey is a good prof, but be prepared to memorize useless minute details.
Grading criteria was very vague when applied. The rubric was clear however when it came time to mark our papers rather than following the rubric she compared our papers to others and if it wasn't as good, in her opinion, (though it fulfills everything in the rubric) you were docked marks. Way too much work to do for one class.
Her written exam questions are ridiculously hard and often too long to answer in the amount of time you are given. Pay attention to anything she says or posts because her exam questions can be about literally anything. She is very unhelpful when you go to her with questions and talks so fast during lectures it is impossible to keep up.
This class is tough on its own because there is a LOT of material, but I think Passey does an okay job at handling it. She has extremely clear grading criteria and if you schedule your worktime appropriately you'll get by just fine. Very good at explaining the content, usually available outside of class to help.
i graduated in 2019, but i am pursuing another degree. DrP has put so much stress on a 1st year class. she expects you to read 30 pages and watch 2.5 hour lectures for a 10question practice test, but uses the same 10+++ questions on every midterm without even testing true understanding of new concepts. we are not allowed to review our own tests.
DO NOT take Psych 105 with Dr. Passey unless you have 10+ hours a week to spend on an intro level elective. you will have 24 assignments, 4 tests, and research participation. Also, she tests on EVERY single tiny detail in lecture, in the textbook, and in the supplementary videos/readings - so take incredibly detailed notes.
Dr. Passey was one of the most organized professors I had during the remote-learning. She posts videos of her lectures and notes, most lectures weren't even the full 50 mins (more like 30-35), yet they were super informative. She's very understanding and gives lots of chances to her students (drops lowest marks). Her exam questions are a bit hard.
Dr. Passey behaved cruelly towards me during my Mothers passing. From her cold admonishments, to having yelled at me after having arrived slightly late to an exam, she failed to offer any compassion during a trying time in my life. Though this has little bearing on her teaching ability, I believe that her unprofessional behaviour is worth noting.
A fairly easy class with an unusually large amount of assessments and assignments (38 in total). Quizzes on readings and a brief homework assignment every week. A research paper split into three components with peer reviews due at each phase. Four cumulative quizzes (10% total), a final (20%) and an extra 3pg. assignment (5%). Eats up time fast.
I feel bad giving Dr Passey a 1 but the workload for this course was just completely insane. There was so much work in this course that it leaves with you almost no time to learn the material and instead you just work. For a 200 level course this amount of work is unacceptable, considerably more than the 300 and 400 level courses I have taken. Run!
Out of all my professors so far through the online curriculum, Passey has been the best. Throughout all of the easy assignments, she gave students every opportunity to pass and better themselves in her class. She communicated well to students, and on top of that did not use SEM which really helped to relieve stress that is added on by SEM.
Dr. Passey was by far my best professor for this online semester. Although the workload seemed like a lot at the beginning, it ended up preparing me well for the final and it relieved my stress quite a bit. I felt like I actually learned stuff in this course, opposed to just watching lectures and writing midterms. I would recommend her as a prof!
Dr. Passey was the best online prof I had this semester! I was wary of the workload at the beginning of the semester (all tests were cumulative + pre class activities), but I felt prepared when studying for the final. Her questions were fair and she dropped 1 out of 4 tests.
the workload seemed so overwhelming at first but the material in the class is super easy to learn/understand. and all the work prepares you super well for the quizzes and final. for each assignment (PCA, unit quiz, and bigger quizzes) she drops your lowest marks for each. out of all my profs she adapted her class the best to online, i recommend!
Do not take this course online if you hate group work, tons of quizzes and assignments on top of it. Assignment expectations were pretty vague, no examples provided to give you an idea of what she's looking for, and the forced research topics are a terrible assignment structure. Struck me as unpleasant to deal with if you ever have an issue.
Get ready to work in this class, for a 200 level course compared to all my other ones this was a loaded course. Make sure you read the syllabus!
She is possible the most adapted during covid as a prof can be. A lot of assignments at first is what you feel like but you quickly get used to it. She drops a lot of low marks and her exams are easy but many.
An amazing prof! I'm impressed with her and her teaching skills. Her weekly assignments forced me to keep up to date with the material, which left me feeling very prepared for the final. Assignments are overall easy marks as long as you put the work in. She's taught me how to study well for other courses, and was very accessible outside of class.
The content and material of 241 is very interesting but Passey made it very unenjoyable. Topics in lecture and text are tested but they are not cohesive. Her assignments are marked /5 so work hard on them. In class activities will carry you so make sure to participate. Tiny topics such as TMT has its own in-class activity but is barely mentioned.
Flipped learning but no in class question time, weekly reading quizzes before Monday lecture, weekly homework, large observational research assignment, one other writing assignment. She acts like her students are not intelligent enough to know information before it is taught. Only good thing is she has a free spendable grace period system
Dr. Passey was great for online! The workload can seem heavy but it really isn't. PCAs take less than an hour to do and are great for easy marks. All of the quizzes and the final were open book. Make sure to take notes beyond what is given on the slides because she usually tests on these extra details. Highly recommend for Psyco 105!
The course material is a mess; you have to spend lots of time trying to figure out what is happening. And there are at least three due each week; I do not recommend her.
I learned so much from this course and her organization and preparation for the online transition was amazing. I would love to take another class with her in the future.
She clearly knows her stuff, but her expectations were quite high. Her grading is extremely critical and unforgiving. Probably one of the most passive-aggressive profs I have ever come across- you must read the textbook, multiple blog posts, weekly quizzes, 3 cumulative quizzes and thursday group projects every week. Drop this class while you can.
Her criteria and feedback were vague and frustrating. Shes an incredibly hard marker and a great deal of things you will be graded on are written. If you have a choice, take a different class.
Her lecture material was about 15 non-detailed slides on "tricky topics" in the textbook, relied solely on the textbook for you to "learn" the chapter. Lazy. Tough marker pushes Grammarly heavily but marks you poorly even when you use it. Never satisfied, marks based on whether or not she likes it not objective to the rubric. one of the worst
Dr. Passey was the most unforgiving and unpleasant/passive-aggressive prof I've had at the UofA. Her grading is extremely critical for all written assignments, she has numerous assignments, group projects (weekly) blog projects, and quizzes. You'd think she assumes you have no other classes- absolutely miserable. Avoid at all costs!
AVOID if you can. There are so many things due every day, it's crazy. I only had 1 other course and still felt like I was falling behind. I don't like how we're graded on quizzes BEFORE lectures, like how are we supposed to know? This course is just unnecessary except for research or honors. Also gave me a failing mark for using "male" and "female"
She was one of the most unforgiving/difficult professors I've ever had. She is so lazy, you teach yourself the course content from the textbook and she then covers the "tricky concepts" in 10-15 slides. She DOES NOT mark based on the rubric, it's whether or not she's in a good mood. She's passive aggressive and rude, one of the worst at UofA
She has high expectations but students will be well prepared to take the final exam due to the heavy load she assigned during the semester. Her marking criteria was unclear and seemed quite subjective. She left it up to students to teach themselves and offered short lectures on limited concepts. The class work was very time consuming!
meh. her style keeps you on track (cuz you're kinda forced to with all the little quizzes/assignments). Lots of low-stake assignments, drops some lowest marks. def needed to read the text but it was easy to follow. a bit tougher than i expected on blog posts, generic feedback given. openbook but tough-ish written parts. interesting topics tho
This class had more quizzes and assignments than any 300 or 400 level class I've ever taken. Impossible to stay on top of when you have 4 other classes. The professor belittles students when they ask questions she is extremely rude. Marks really hard on written responses. Hard to even tell what she was even looking for.
Live lectures were not helpful. Class is structured with many quizzes, in-class assignments, 3 cumulative quizzes (basically mini-midterms covering 14 chapters), and a final exam. Lots of reading--at the worst it was 60 pages of textbook + 40 pages of double-column papers to read. Interesting course; 100% self-learning.
Very structured class, so you never have to cram because the class forces you to keep up with the material weekly. But if you are an introvert then it might be hard because you have weekly group assignments over zoom and you have to perform a short skit sometimes. You have to read the textbook. Regardless, I found it really fun and interesting!
She is my favourite prof, would recommend to anyone. Always accessible, honest &helpful! She made zoom fun & worth it! Weekly discussion posts, participation, presentation and research proposal. All very doable with great feedback. Amazing instructions and clear expectations!!
A lot of work throughout the course. Some assignments require a lot of time but are not worth that much. Almost impossible to get a perfect score on written assignments unless you did it exactly how she imagined it. No matter how much you try she will always find something wrong with it. If I could I would take it with a different proff.
Gives a ton of homework. We had a total of 2 midterms, 4 quizzes (20 questions), and the last quiz was less than a week before the final exam so this left very little study time. Plus 8 assignments, this is more than ANY other class I have taken so far. I was only in 3 classes at this time so I was able to keep up luckily. overall, yikes.
Dr. Passey and her class seem extremely intimidating, but looking back I thought the class was worthwhile. The nice thing about having so many assignments is she always gave you an opportunity to drop your lowest grade which is a great help at the end of the course. You also know the material thoroughly by the end of the term. Hard, but good luck!
I was really nervous to take this class online because it had mandatory in-class participation, but Dr. Passey won me over with her engaging assignments! She is a master of her craft. She will make you work hard, but everything (down to the structure of group projects) is designed to help you better understand the material. She's brilliant!
By far my favourite course I've taken. She gives fantastic feedback, and participation is marked each class so get ready to talk. Discussion questions can be challenging at first, but you get the hang of it. Really interesting content, definitely applicable to real life. Listen to advice she gives because it is great and will defs help you succeed
Regret not dropping this class. Attendance is not only mandatory, you're marked on group assignments. Quizzes and midterm are barely related to content in lectures. You're better off going through the textbook and hoping for the best. Grading scheme is ridiculous, everything is marked out of 5 but a 92 is an A. Miss one thing and you're at an 80
Im in her class now. She is terrible. Her written assignments are impossible to get a good mark on. You do group projects weekly which she gives you 20 minutes to do and marks it like youve had weeks to do it. Her lecture vids are like her reading an essay. Lazy as all her multiple choice is off quizlet. She is grumpy and bad. Do not recommend
After Passey's class, I not only dropped her class but completely dropped out of the Psychology program... Read the textbook, watch lectures, and hour long videos she wants on top. They won't help you though as she's lazy and just takes all her questions off of quizlet... Marks out of 5 and says to "read the comments" if you ask for feedback.
Horrible. One of the most uncaring, unsympathetic professors I have ever had. You will sometimes be handing in 4 things a week, unit exams take place on days when there is no class scheduled, and she is just plain rude. She expects so much and yet gives so little, all of her questions are off quizlet. Never, ever take a class with her.
horrible prof, her lectures sound like she's reading straight from a textbook but the corresponding slides contain 5 words. Tests are on textbook material with maybe a couple of topics from the videos. mandatory next chapter quiz on the same day as a cumulative exam for the previous topics and then a writing assignment due the same week. pain.
does not give specific feedback or care about student well-being despite teaching a psychology course, bad grader, avoid. her mic is too close during videos and you can hear a literal waterfall in her mouth it is genuinely appalling, doesn't even make a transcript so you have to watch it too. would give a 0 if I could
by far the worst professor i have ever had she gives quizzes on the same our major cumulative quizzes are on which are not even on our instructional days and major assignments every other week I don't understand how she is a psychology professor with the way she handles students and course work
Avoid her! She's so passive aggressive! She doesn't give you specific feedback, she just makes you look at a general document of feedback that everyone can see. It's not directed to you. Her lecture videos I don't even think are her and they are just not informative. There are things on the test that aren't in the textbook or in the videos.
I have never had a prof who was rude, unsympathetic, and so passive aggressive. She doesn't care about her students at all. Her lecture videos (which I don't even think is her) are terrible. they barely give you any information. Her exams are on days that we don't even have class. She doesn't give feedback on any homework assignments.
Only take this class with her if you are a robot that does not care about education or mutual respect and if the world magically changes to having 30 hours in a day because with her course load you will need it.
Objectively, she is a bad professor. She does not give feedback on personal work only general feedback for the class. Hard marker in an unfair way. Test days are on non-instructional days, multiple (2-3 sometimes 4) assignments due weekly. Quizzes are copied straight from Quizlet. I highly suggest avoiding her class if you want a good semester.
I didn't have any negative interactions with her but this class is a major disappointment. She gives you a small amount of time for her tests and basically uses the written part of the tests to decrease your mark. Unless you have extra time or are a robot who can remember everything you are going to have a really rough time in this class.
An interesting class but she moved way too quickly. Especially for the online lecture portion. You could not get a full sentence down before she was already on the next slide. She is also quite tough on grading.
probably one of the worst professors I've had the misfortune of learning from. never gives feedback and is a really hard marker. her tests almost seem unfair. her lectures slides have 2 words on them and what she said is 10 folds of that and everything that she says during lectures is examinable. do not take her if you like having a good gpa :)
genuinely such a bad professor, it is so appalling that she is a psychology professor. how can you be so bad at something you teach. literally has a script she READS off o f for her lecture videos. way too many assignments and her tests are unfair. don't take her.
her workload was HUGE and let alone she would have quizzes and tests due on days we didn't even have CLASS. her videos were made from 2016 and her written portions on the test took like half the time to read and were only marked out of 5. you could also hear the spit in her voice every time she said something, made it so hard to watch her videos.
Definitely do not recommend anyone to take a class with her, she is 100% the worst prof i've had. Tests on things not covered and has cumulative tests on days we didn't even have class. Her "lectures" were horrible videos made in 2015 with the mic way too close to her mouth. Her grading made no sense and she provides absolutely no feedback
Genuinely the worse professor I've ever had. She is so condescending and unhelpful and she teaches students a 1000x simplified version of what is tested. Has a quiz on the entire textbook and a final and an entire research paper and media assignment all within the same week and a half. No personalized feedback & marks brutally. Ruined my semester
Was super excited to take this class but this was the most annoying prof I've ever had. Her lecture videos were from years ago and she talks so close to the mic it gets really hard to pay attention to what is being said. Her quizzes were due every Monday when class times were TR. The zoom lectures were ok but her quizzes are straight from quizlet.
Oh boy. Lectures did not really add on to anything but you still had to do them because any hyper-specific detail can and will be tested. I found the course layout to generally be kind of disorganized, it was hard to keep jumping between the lectures and the textbook. 3 cumulative tests AND a final. However, she does drop a lot of your lower marks
Dr. Passey is very condescending in her teaching methods, but she explains exactly what she wants to see. Marks are very separated, this is nice because the final is only worth 20%, however, there is too much to keep track of. Quizzes, Written assignments, midterms, peer reviews, worksheets... it's a lot. You have to work in this class!
Really listen to lectures because shes tests on examples, but she doesnt test on anything that isnt discussed. Lots of homework and quizzes which are fairly easy as long as u put effort in so mark boosting is attainable. Shes super kind and one of the better profs I have encountered
Absolutely no constructive feedback. You were not able to review quizzes and when asked to elaborate on docked marks on the quiz, she said she had no time to provide me with an explanation and referred me to the notes. This happened on multiple occasions. There were so many deadlines&assignments&quizzes. Tests on the tiniest details from lecs&text
she is the most condescending person I've ever met. She doesn't give you constructive feedback AT ALL! her written response on test are impossible to get any points in. sometimes they are out of 7 or 8 points, good luck getting full marks. her powerpoints are ridiculous and you can hear every lip smack and spit. its disgusting and hard to focus.
Overall, Passey is a decently good teacher. Not the best but also not terrible(despite the most recent reviews). I do agree that the amount of work needed to do every single week is a lot of a 100 level course. Otherwise structured well for active recall. As long as you keep up with the course content you should be able to do well.
probably the worst prof I have ever had. there's 3 cumulative quizzes (basically midterm 1, midterm 2 and then a 'final'), but no the third cumulative isn't the final. So the last cumulative test is on all the chapters, and then there's an actual final which is then tested on all the chapters again. So disorganized. Why am I taking two finals??
her lectures were actually so painful to listen to because of her mic, had to listen on 2x speed and could still hear ALL the mouth noises. Lots of assignments, which do help you keep up with the material but having weekly quizzes and biweekly homework assignments (both of which are due on days that we don't even have class) can get overwhelming
Passey wasnt that bad to me, but the lip smacking in the lecture videos bugged me a lot. she would have quizzes scheduled on other days that the class isnt on, v inconvenient, hard marker, homework assignments were unclear, drops lowest mark(s) on categories of course work, she was very nice to me, but i heard other things from others.
Heavy workload with weekly quizzes, biweekly papers, long textbook chapters, in-class activities and video lectures each week. Her manner of speech didn't bug me like it did others, but she does talk quickly. I think some people rated her too harshly: she's not a bad prof at all, you'll have to work hard in her class but you get chances to fail.
So many assignments, all worth so little. I counted 27 assessments. She does give leniency as some of your lowest grades are dropped. The majority of test questions are from what she speaks about during lectures, so listen and take notes because the PowerPoints don't go into detail. Tests including the final had lots of previously seen questions.
PLEASE LISTEN TO REVIEWS ON HERE. I chose to give her the benefit of the doubt but she actually is a very HARSH marker, has unrealistic expectations of her students (especially online), have to get a 92 to get an A but has unrealistic standards for assignments and tests. Tests you on chapters BEFORE it's even discussed in class (lots of self-teach)
There is a million and one assignments for this class. Complicated expectations for each assignment and ridiculously hard marker compared to the rubric she provided. Avoid.
Terrible, terrible, terrible. So much work for such little gain, plenty of other psych teachers to go with. Never taking her courses again
This professors makes the course way too heavy. Too many assignments, quizzes and she is a hard marker. Literally so time consuming and tiring, it's not fun at all. Do not recommend her at all.
I am a straight-A student, but in this course even taking every piece of feedback and working days and weeks on your paper, you will still do bad. I have never done this horrible on any scientific paper, in my 3 years. She marks like you are submitting to a journal, an absolutely horrendous course, DO NOT TAKE WITH HER
I took this course at UofA bc it was full at MacEwan. So content heavy, every week a huge quiz, pages of homework, and multiple assignments due. Everything was worth such little weight but if you didn't do well (because ur in 4 other courses and can't commit 20hrs) you will do badly. She is such a hard marker, I cried reading my feedback 4 papers.
Do not take this class! This class is insanely time consuming and it is impossible to please the professor. She treats students like they are five years old and makes learning an unenjoyable experience. Grades are not based on knowledge of the topics but following her confusing, multistep processes. There are much better professors out there!
This professor is horrible, there are way too many assignments and quizzes. The amount of work she expects to be done in a week is ridiculous. Her marking also made no sense all semester she didn't agree with the TAs marking and thus you would loose marks even though the TA said that your assignments were correct. I would never suggest her.
I like Professor Passey as a person, she is very nice and caring about you. However, a tough grader. I took this class during spring and do not recommend taking it in a 6 week course, unless it is the only class you are taking because it will take up your time a lot. The class was not as interesting as I anticipated, but I respect the professor.
This was one of the most challenging classes I have taken. there is so much homework, and she grades hard even though the course material is not complex. most of the homework is marked by completion, but if you receive an incomplete you have to go to office hours to actually find out what you did wrong. Avoid this prof if you want a decent grade
She is a lovely human, horrible prof. This is an insanely high-maintenance class, with at least 3 assignments due every week, worth so little but hard to do well on. She doesn't teach the material in class that is important but yet has challenging quizzes. With 4 other classes, all the homework is impossible to keep up with.
This professor gave very clear criteria to succeed in this class and was always trying to help improve in her class. She made it possible to go back to all her material to succeed as well. Many chances to do well in this class.
Many reviews rate Dr. Passey poorly because she has a little more work in her courses than other profs, but I found that this really helped me learn the material without pure memorization. She's also one of the only profs I've had that took the time to learn my name even though I don't show up to lectures unless absolutely necessary.
Be warned that this class has required text readings, a couple articles, and in class group projects. However, I found these to be really helpful in learning the content! The tests were all open book and fair in my opinion. The assignments are complete/incomplete so make sure to check the rubric and ask questions in her multiple office hours a week
Was this class easy? Nope. Was it worth it? 100%. Dr. Passey sets high expectations for her students but she is there to help you every step of the way. She explains the course content very well. The final paper is tough, but every Friday is dedicated to learning how to write a proper research paper in APA. Don't let the reviews scare you away.
I feel like im teaching myself out of the textbook most of the time. Completely unfair marking (as in you will receive a 0 for a minor error for something not even directly related to the content of your assignment). Only redeeming quality is she some of your lowest marks. Avoid if you actually want to be taught or are an average writer
I took 241 with her last year and I found this class easier! The textbook and lectures overlapped, the quizzes were (essentially) open book, and if you attend class the homework checks are easy. You have chances to fail, and getting TA/peer feedback on the research paper was very helpful. Don't be afraid of Dr. Passey's classes, they are worth it!
All that needs to be said is that, this semester, Passey's 347 class had half of the seats in the class open 5 days into the semester. For the UofA, this is essentially unheard of. Passey overloads her classes with loads of unnecessary work and tops it off with class material tailored to her interests. Like most other students chose, avoid her!
Passey is a pretty terrible professor. The workload Passey set for the course was ridiculously high, at multiple assignments due per week. The content is another issue - Passey is VERY ideologically driven. Prepare to focus on content selected by her that props up her own political leanings at the expense of actual course material. Hard marker too.
She's a good prof and wants to make things interesting! Shes inviting and tries her best to keep us engaged. The only difficult part of this class was that there's a million little things that make up the grade and it is so difficult to stay on top of them all. All the quizzes were open notes, not very difficult otherwise.
The prof lectures 1/3 of the days and when she does, it is really quick. Most of the learning is done by you. I would not recommend this course unless you're interested in research because it is definitely not a GPA booster. If you're in this class, make sure you stay on top of everything. Pros: open book tests, posted lectures.
Students are put off by the amount of assessments for all her classes. She has high expectations, but it's certainly achievable. She leads students throughout the course. Students who say they find that they are teaching themselves--it is content heavy, so if you are struggling, reach out. 100% recommend Dr. Passey. She deserves a higher rating.
Dr. Passey is a really caring professor. The course is relatively heavy in that each week you have 2-3 things due but they aren't difficult to do well on. Gives many chances for feedback on the final essay. Online + open book exams makes things easier too. If you don't fall behind and stay on top of things, you can do well in the course.
I was a bit hesitant going into her class seeing ALOT of negative reviews on here. I was pretty surprised that the reviews said she was rude? But she was a incredible prof, was kind and caring about her students (she could remember everyone individually) grading is harsh but you get to revamp it before submission. online test/open book as well.
She is a great lady, but expects a LOT from her students. 2 tests a week with a group project, and 2 long chapter readings a week. 3 midterms and a book project with lots of mini tasks and a final exam. I found it exhausting to keep up and felt like I was behind all semester even though I would spend +25 a week on this class.
This class isn't hard but it is work heavy. However if you just do the work it's not hard to do well, she has several assignments each week that aren't worth much each but in total are 25% If you struggle if one area there's lots of opportunity to compensate but you have to do a lot of easy work.
Good professor in terms of lectures, but be prepared to have a larger amount of work in this class than many others would likely assign. You also may receive grades/feedback for certain assignments that you are to revise and resubmit based on that feedback until very soon before the due date. Grading criteria was also frustrating and inconsistent.
She provides feedback which is pre-written and doesn't usually offer that much help. There's a ton of work she provides various 'offers' that make it seem like a desirable course but any missed work will effect your grade despite saying a few missed assignments won't hurt the grading. I also found her rather passive aggressive when talking with her
Be prepared for an unreal amount of work. Every week you will have to submit 2-4 assignments (quizzes, homework, peer-review, paper, etc.). The final is 3 assignments; final paper (you worked on throughout the semester), a cumulative quiz & a final exam Although these assignments are typically an easy grade (~85%) it is a lot of work.
Best prof i have had at the U of A so far. This course is a lot of work as there are many assignments but they are very enjoyable thus making it worth it. Would 100% take one of Dr. Passey classes again.
I did very well in this class, but hated every minute of it. She gives an absolutely ridiculous amount of reading, and you basically teach yourself this course. I learned nothing from her, and even when I asked her questions I found her very unhelpful. The course itself is heavy, but fun to learn. Take a different prof.
Engaging lectures and very helpful outside of class (i.e., student hours). However, there's a lot of work for this course, such as blog projects, weekly quizzes, problem-solving activities, and exams (open book and not timed). Apart from that, she's a chill prof! Would definitely recommend taking her class if you're willing to put in the work!
Very ideologically driven and the content is very dry, hardly anything is interesting or relevant. If you're a teachers pet you'll probably like her.
Dr. Passey's class is content-heavy, but manageable if you stay on top of the work. The assignments can be time-consuming, but open-book quizzes and peer feedback make it doable. Using unstuckstudy ai helped me prep efficiently.
Dr. Passey is an incredible professor, I was surprised to see so many negative reviews. She cares a lot about the learning of her students and this is evident through her accessibility and feedback. There is a lot of homework, but many accommodations are provided to prevent burnout. Stay on top of the work and apply yourself and you will do well.
It's def not an easy A but I put in bare effort and her grading method really didn't seem like it would screw u over but it might. I finished the class with a 92% ( based on the weighting) but she doesn't really care about what percent u finish with it's more about how she thinks u grow, which i thought was kinda stupid. Honestly its not fair.
She has a lot of assignments throughout the term, but is really accommodating and super sweet. Just stay on top of things and listen to the feedback given for the paper and exams-- it really helps show 'growth' which she keeps in mind when grading the final and the paper. Her exams are more on the tough side since they're open book.
I think Dr. Passey is a super sweet prof and you can tell she wants her students to succeed. She gives clear feedback on the research paper and gives you lots of chances to do well. It is pretty content heavy but just stay on top of it and you'll do fine
dont take unless there isn't another professor available
Passey for 212 is really good if you can keep up with weekly quizzes and assignments. It's open book, it's really easy to do well on the weekly quizzes, and fairly easy to do the homework checks. The midterms aren't terrible at all especially since you have all day to do them. As long as you do the work in the class, you will get a good grade.
lots of active learning instead of basic lectures. research paper broken down to 3 assignments completed throughout semester. midterms are reasonable lengths, online, open book, untimed. people don't like her only because they actually have to put in required effort or didn't get the grade they wanted. free easy A course by doing the bare minimum.
Weekly quizzes (12.5%), hw assignments (12.5%), research paper (25%), best 2/3 midterms (25%), final (25%). Set up reminders/calendars for everything to stay on track. Most don't rate her good because they don't have what it takes to succeed point blank period. Nobody to blame but yourself for your grade in this course. Very accommodating as well.
I don't ever use rate my professor but I am just done with this course. There were so many small deadlines, oops token things you had to use to go back and edit your work to get full marks etc. I just overall found it confusing and the feedback on exams were unclear. I should have ran when I saw the 18 page syllabus. I do not recommend.
Seemed to be a good and engaging prof. Marking can be ambiguous and leave you wondering why you got a grade or where to improve.
Overall the course was interesting but the marking scheme was pretty disappointing. You have to do way too many assignments throughout the semester including quizzes on textbook readings, blog posts, short written assignments every week, and exams. I think the prof uses her own opinion to grade and is too subjective when it comes to marking exams.
She seems so nice, but this class is a nightmare in terms of deadlines, set-up, the things she's asking of students, etc. The grading criteria is the most absurdly confusing thing ever. Over half the stuff that ur required to do will be less then 50% your overall grade. Don't believe me? Her syllabus was 19 PAGES! 19!! That says more than enough..
did great in the class (so i thought) until final grades came out. she has an unclear grading criteria on her syllabus where you dont know what your grade is till the very end. the amount of work had to do in the class was crazy. do not recommend
very overwhelming course. if you have the motivation to deal with weekly chapter retrieval practice, chapter readings, homework checks, a handful of cumulative quizzes every so often, a full-semester research paper, AND a final exam - go for it. it's a lot of work and effort and sometimes it never really pays off.
This class requires a lot of effort, but achieving a high grade is very doable if you put in the work!! She really knows her stuff and there are plenty of chances to recieve feedback. It's very important to do the readings as she will test on topics from the textbook that weren't discussed in class. She's a very caring prof and a very nice person!
