Lecture/Rec. - Straightforward, Helpful, Exams/Quizzes/Problem Sets-Some Dropped
Easy to follow- great teacher. Gets through a lot with the time given. Great!
Just go to class and you can 4.0 it. Very helpful...I hate math and I have a 4.
Easy Class, Good Professor, I recommend it.
Prof. Powers is very helpful she shows students the attention they need.
Powers is the rudest instructor I've ever encountered. She's on quite a power trip and can't accept that her class is a waste of time for anyone who's had a decent h.s. math class. Tests deliberately designed to throw off those who only go to recitation
Don’t ask a question if you haven’t raised your hand first because she flips out. Actually, don’t bother asking any questions at all because it doesn’t help to have her repeat what she has already said in the exact same way she said it before.
I feel it's unfortunate that you cannot ask questions, or that you should be met with some rude comment for doing so. Her math knowledge is out of this world. Too bad her people skills are lackluster at best.
I must say Powers is by far the worst teacher I have ever had or care to have. What is up with her. She must have had a complete personality change from 2002 to 2004 I mean look what people say about her now. I would discribe her as scary, mean, and useless!
Uses her hands more than her verbal skills.Intimidating when asking questions, annoyed if you don't get it the first time
I hate her. Her class is for the mentally handicapped. I hardly go and have a 4 point. Not worth my time or effort.
Very easy to understand what she is teaching! And excellent notes.
I feel like I am in the third grade when she is teaching. The course itself isn't hard but she makes everyone not want to go to class. I just basically taught myself and just went to class to take the quizzes and exams. She also does this thing that I cannot STAND! She repeats the definitions for things at least 3 or 4 times before moving on!!
She is the first math teacher I have actually understood! She does repeat things often, but it's actually really helpful when you're trying to take notes- you don't have to look up or search the overhead as often. I have never found her intimidating, and I understood everything she taught very well.
She acts like everyone has some sort of learning disability, its almost as bad as when a teacher acts like we're all rocket scientists. Go to class, don't ask questions and you'll do good.
She's awesome! It's so funny and awesome how much passion she has for math. Best math class ever!
Solid. Nice lady. Cares alot about helping her students.
Clearly loves math and knows what she's talking about! One of the best math teachers I've ever had.
She knows what shes talking about, but she tends to drone on a bit.
She's a great teacher. Although she doesn't like talking to students one on one before or after class, she writes her office hours in addition to other important due dates or MLC reviews on the projector each lecture. VERY clear explanations. I'm awful at math, but she made it easy and ...fun?
Lectures as if the students are way younger than they are. Didn't really mind though because her explanations are good and I did well in the class.
She teaches really fast and when I raised my hand to ask a question she told me to hurry up.
She knows what she's talking about, but she lectures like she's speaking to small children. If you can handle that, you'll be just fine.
Great math teacher, best one I've ever had. I did really well and I'm horrible at math.
She was an okay math teacher, very clear but she lectures like she is speaking to small children, which unfortunately people act like in the class.
Mrs. Powers is a fantastic teacher, this is coming from someone who HATES math with a burning passion. She made it much easier to understand and he explanations are always very clear. She loves what she does and I think that translates into what she brings to class. :)
Her lectures were really good, she was very clear and knew how to explain the material. If you listen close enough you will catch an unexpected joke, which always gave me a good laugh. I dont recommend that you ask questions during the lecture though, I have seen her lite a couple kids on fire. But overall really a nice teacher.
While Mrs. Powers is very good at explaining math, she treats students like they are little kids. She regularly calls students "boys and girls". She also tends to baby-talk and she doesn't use the correct terminology all the time. Exams are a lot harder than the quizzes but there are a lot of help rooms available!
The class is hard (coming from a non-math person), 5 credits, 5 days a week. But, Powers is great. She is very clear, makes the best of the huge lecture situation, and obviously cares about her students doing well. She understands math is not easy for everyone and would explain every step of of every problem - no one was ever confused due to her.
Lost of people are quick to judge due to her niceness. If you attend to class and pay attention you'll get an easy A. She's pretty funny and tries to have a stress free class.
Attendance isn't mandatory for lecture, but is for recitation. Being a math class, lectures are extremely important. Lessons are put up online and you should print them out before the lecture. You take notes the whole time and she makes the work pretty clear. Easy to 4.0 if you put forth the work. Do the homework problems before quizzes & exams.
Great teacher, she'll go through an specific topic and explain it thoroughly. She'll joke sometimes and try to make math a little less tedious. Overall, she made math interesting and fun.
I'm not a fan of math by any means, but with the right teacher you can do very well. Professor Powers is a good teacher, but I didn't hardly show up to lecture, so I did pretty poorly in her class. Not a good idea to skip, otherwise you'll be scrambling as I did. Great professor, though she is slightly belittling.
She's overall a really good and in-depth professor. She really assists and go over material with you if you are having trouble with it. Exams are pretty much similar to what you've learned in class, just attend the class and you'll be good.
Explains things in detail
She explains things pretty throughly most of the time, but sometimes she goes super fast and then super slow. She is really moody and you never know how she will act. She has yelled at kids for asking questions and is constantly saying "be quiet" when the classroom is silent. Overall a pretty easy class, but she isn't the best.
Granted I'm not the best math student to begin with, but this class wasn't easy. If math isn't your strength be prepared to work hard in this class to get above a 3.0/3.5. Powers isn't very approachable and isn't enthusiastic about answering your questions. She comes to lecture, dictates the notes, and thats that. You'll have to work hard for a 3.5
She's a great professor, gets things taught efficiently. She refers to the class as "boys and girls" but not really in a condescending way. You'll have a TA to teach your recitation and grade your tests and quizzes. Powers makes some quiet jokes and plays them off, that's really funny if you pay attention.
She's really nice and caring, and even brought us candy before exam week. Even though she goes pretty fast, her lectures are okay and easy to understand. You're given lots of recommended problems to do in the book and actually doing them will help you understand the material on the tests which aren't too hard if you pay attention and go to lecture.
Professor Powers was a good math teacher! You should go to class, because her lectures are pretty dense and she goes through the material very quickly. The first two tests of the semester were the hardest and the last two were the easiest. The homework is tough and WebWork based. She usually assigns one set of 10 homework problems every week.
Powers is an alright teacher, but Math 103 is an awful class. Who thought it'd be a good idea to throw kids who failed the placement exam in a lecture hall where you can't ask questions? Powers goes through notes extremely fast & doesn't care if you understand the material. The quizzes and webwork aren't too bad, but the exams are MUCH harder.
Lol, terrible teacher.
goes fast on notes & will get through at least 3 or 4 lessons done in lecture, doesnt stop for questions & handwriting is pretty hard to read, so if you go to lectures you have to actually listen to what she says. webwork & quizzes are super easy & your best bet is to stud at least two days before an exam
Hand writing is horrible- can't read it. Goes very fast. Ended up with a 3.0. She is an average professor.
She's alright but she should really get some new pens. Her handwriting isn't the best and she uses markers to write which just makes it worse to read through the projector. Is always shushing the class even when no one is talking. Always starts class a minute before class time. Isn't the greatest but I just needed to get a good grade and I did.
Super clear, sometimes moves quickly. Doesnt have time for questions but is nice as well.
Very sweet, no B.S. kind of professor. easy math class to start college with.
Powers herself wasn't awful, she seems like a sweet lady but she sometimes gets upset in the middle of lecture and lashes out. She goes pretty quick so be ready. Also, it's really hard to read her handwriting at times. Most people just skip lecture and get the notes online. Exams are way harder than practice exams, especially exam 2, so beware.
I went to the MLC, very often and failed majority of my exams. Even after I did all of the practice exams. WARNING the practice exam is wayyyy easier than the real exam. I suggest that you look up every concept on YouTube. That's how I ended up passing the class.
This class sucks! She is a nice lady but she rushes all of her notes and doesnt explain anything throughly. I aced College Algebra in HS but this was terrible. Putting a bunch of students who failed the math placement test in a lecture hall where they cant ask any questions in asinine. Not a very good teacher and not a good system to begin with.
If you love math and are good at it this class won't be a problem, however if not, then you have to really work hard for it. Powers always moves really quickly and does not stop for student's question. Her final exams are kinda hard but if you go over the notes, and practice exams you would be fine. Also her handwriting is not the best .
Ive never witnessed a class anything like this. Every lecture did not make any sense and left students confused every time. Even though many kids struggled and had very low grades the professor failed to show that she cared the slightest bit.
Took 3 years of algebra in highschool and only got a 2.5 by .98%. I basically taught myself the whole class. Would get 80-95s on practice exams and self assessments then would get 65-75 on exams... only thing that really saved me was having a good TA.
Not the best professor. Goes through lectures very quickly (do not take Powers if you have ADHD!) and has strange ways of explaining things. Very caring and accessible outside of class but be prepared to teach yourself. Webwork is very difficult and never on the exams. Quizzes are easy but exams are hard.
Attendance is only mandatory for recitation, going to her lectures made me understand concepts even less than when I arrived. The webwork was way more difficult than what was in lectures and quizzes, but at a similar level to the exams. Highly recommend using the webwork to study for exams as opposed to practice exams and notes bc they're harder.
She definitely is demanding during lectures and goes very quickly so be prepared to pay attention. Print the notes out before you attend lecture that way you can follow along. Basically it is just a review of high school math and what you see on the notes and practice quizzes is what is on the final exam.
She goes through material very quickly. She ignores students when we ask her to slow down, or repeat the info. When we try to ask she just says go to office hours. If we do go to office hours, it's crowded and your questions won't get answered. If the majority of the class did very poorly, she won't give a curve. She also won't review before a test
only way to do good in thus class, is to do good on all the quiz. she teaches pretty fast but overall she not that bad. sweet lady
She moves extremely quick and always over explains everything to the point of confusion. Doesn't acknowledge when students ask her to go slow or go back.(DONT take if you have ADHD!!) She will always refer you back to the syllabus for any and everything and that her only answer. Quizzes and exams NEVER match and no opportunity to redo missed work.
Powers is the worst professor I have ever had. She doesn't care when we ask her to slow down, and she is impossible to learn from. Everyone I know in this class, is not going to pass. I do all the homework, go to class, study, get tutored, but all the efforts I have put in will not change the fact that she is a horrible professor. Worst professor .
She moves way too fast and seems like more than half her class doesn’t know that material, but she doesn’t care. Very nice teacher just not a great one.
Over explains things to the point of confusion but if you just zone out when you see it coming you're good. If you watch the lectures and do the work, not much at all, you should ace this without a doubt. Even if she does go fast, she explains everything so in depth that you cant miss anything.
she is a terrible teacher. has no empathy for any of her students. is very unfair.
This class requires effort. She goes through material very quickly, but does provide videos of the lectures and completed notes. Pay attention and do the homework and practice questions and you'll be all good. A lot of material is in this course so she isn't able to slow down much. Be prepared to seek external help if you struggle a lot in math.
If you skip class, you won't pass. Does not have a lot of empathy towards students, but honestly I think she is trying her best to be the best she can be.
This professor is nice, she will sometimes over explain things, but try her best to make sure everyone understands, she try to talk and connect with students to see how they are doing in the class. You will need a calculator, she does get upset about those, otherwise is a good teacher.
She definitely tries her best but definitely feels more like a high school teacher than a prof. lacks empathy for students and often explains things to the point of confusion.
Powers is a regimented professor and can be repetitive, but personally that is exactly what I need to succeed in math. The lecture will move quickly if the class participates or she will have long pauses waiting for a response. Webwork is very important for this class, but sometimes the questions won't have an example from class to follow.
Nice teacher who genieunly seemed to care about her students picking up on the material, MSU math grading policy for the course made it easy
I took 103a and 103b with her. The class is fast paced but she provides all the lessons as recordings and also materials to practice. She is a very caring professor and will somehow learn everyone's name. Definitely recommend taking her but be prepared to put in work!
Powers is a decent math teacher but she's hard to understand at times because her handwriting is kinda bad. There's better math teachers in the math department.
This is a great class for somebody who is already good at math. She goes incredibly fast so it's really important to take notes. An ok teacher if you really dedicate your time to the class.
I really liked her as a person but not as a professor. She explained things in a way that was very confusing and contradicting to what she previously taught. Will not answer questions unless it is during her office hours.
Honestly one of the rudest teachers I have ever met. Do you have a question after class? Sorry she wont answer it, instead head to her 8:30 am office hours to get it answered. Oh, but it's a really quick question? Too bad. I had an issue with the grading on an exam, brought it to her attention, left in tears. overall pretty bad. teaching is mid.
Took this professor for two semesters and found her teaching style okay, the way she explained the material wasn't always super clear and honestly my friend in the class taught me half of it. The extra blank lessons help, it seems boring but if you do it with a friend it's not bad. The homework isn't graded but the quizzes are.
Powers was great. As long as you study the material you will do fine. She records all lectures and posts them to study from and go back to if you're confused. She also somehow gets to know every one of her students' names, not sure how. Very nice and easy to approach if you're ever confused or have a quick question about the course. Would recommend
Professor Powers was really nice to everyone, but she's a little weird. The class isn't hard, but you do have to pay attention and put in the work to do well in the class. She stays after class to help you with anything you don't understand, is quick with emails, and posts all lectures online if you miss them or need to really work on them.
Powers is a good prof, but the class moves at such a fast pace its kinda hard to keep up. Very quiz heavy, I don't think the homework was graded at all. All homework and quizzes were online, except for exams and the occasional in-person quiz which we had like four times. Her handwriting is kinda sloppy. Not that hard of a class though
all around not a good class. you learn a new leason before your quizes and nothing in class is on the exams
Super rad lady, who goes out of her way and makes connections with students. Rushes through lessons with little to no explanation. Tries her best to help students.
Professor Powers was super nice, def a little odd, but always willing to help! If I paid attention I probably would've eaten the class up (MTH103B), had her for A and B and loved her both semesters.
You are not graded on homework at all, so if you do wonderful at homework but horrible at quizzes (like myself) then prepare for a hard semester. She teaches at a fast rate, each class meeting covers a new subject, regardless of whether or not you've comprehended the last one. Talking to her/asking her questions is an intimidating experience.
Anyone can learn and master the topics. Starts out slow with basic high school concepts and builds upon those (almost everything relates to functions and graphs). Will walk everyone through steps and offer help. Quizzes/exams are short, can be specific in grading criteria at times. Pay attention & attend class you will have a VERY easy time.
This is for MTH103B. Content is much more complex than 103A but the amount of time given to learn new concepts is much shorter. She jumps from concepts to concepts and there will often be times where you will have to learn and master something within a few days. Good resources for studying but requires a lot more effort than 103A.
It is not Professor Powers' fault that MTH103B is formatted in a way that speeds through units during the semester. She tries her best to accommodate students in and out of class, but sometimes, due to the content, it's difficult to get help on specific units. Overall, a helpful and caring professor with a challenging course. Would take again.
She was the only reason I passed 103A and B. She is a bit aggressive, but only because she wants you to succeed. She always makes sure students know what they need to be doing and her husband is a counselor so she always offers you to talk to him. She makes it clear when the tests and quizzes are. Go to office hours and MLC. You wont pass without.
Class is fine. Teacher is a little weird and explains weirdly like over explains easy stuff and doesn't explain hard stuff. Gets mad if people don't answer her questions aloud or if you try to leave class. she also speaks to students like they are 5. Overall not bad teacher just annoying
Overall Professor Powers is a nice woman and you can tell that she cares, The way she structures her courses as far as quizzes doesn't necessarily set students up for success. There have been too many occasions where she's rushing through class notes running out of class time. It tends to throw off other students who are trying to keep up.
