Very hard class. Two exams and a paper are due for this class. The exams consist of awnsering one essay question. She grades very had. She requires you to purchase 6 BOOKS!! Watch out, she may cheat you out of your grade, she did me!
I could not stand writing 8 papers in a term, but I got over it. I got an A in the class though because I showed up to class everyday. Tons of reading as well, but I only read half of the books.
She does make you read a lot of books, but each book makes good points. Just keep up with the reading & learn the material. The topics were great!
great class, great topics...easy exams
A lot of reading, but it's do-able. Only tests are take home & excellent topics of discussion!
great reading assignments and it's like having a friend in class. she talks with us not at us. really nice and great sense of humor. you get to take your tests home too!
one of the best classes I have ever had. She is such a cool person and is someone you can really feel comfortable with. Her lectures and choice of books are great (videos are eye-opening too).
Attendance MANDATORY. short paragraph due most day as class participation. lots of group discussion w/ idea presentation to class (very informal, 1 spokesperson fine) every day. open discussions. fair testing. in the end easy grade if you put in the time
she was very friendly and easy to understand. Some topics were a little difficult to understand, but only two (take home) tests and an easy paper were required. I got a B in this class. Classes were interesting.
easy teacher, lots of reading, take home tests are easy if you pay attention in class, easy participation pts relate to tests
She makes you read a lot but the assignments are easy. Sh gives you almost full credit if you turn something in. There are no exams, just take-home assignments. She's very inspiring. Great professor :)
If you are a men or like men DO NOT take this class. Or if you are a Republician DO NOT take this class. I have to say this is THE WORST class I have ever taken!!! Class Usually sent bashing men, marriage, and hetrosexuality.
Good professor, nice person, snappy dresser. Pretty easy when it comes to grading essays, although there is a lot of reading to do. Extremely interesting class.
She is very nice and friendly professor. Just participate discussion in group and tell your opinion when watching movies. Taking home 2 tests and one project. She is a great professor, if you want an A. You learn and know a lot about American women. It's interesting class, and take it.
Dense reading, but it's ok. If your grasp on the english language is not good then get your dictionary out. Otherwise her classes are enjoyable and informative. You must attend most classes if you want an A
One of the best professors I've had. Very open-minded, never discourages or "bashes" other points-of-view. Four take-home essay tests, quite a bit of reading, but very interesting subject matter. Learned a lot, helped me analyze media more critically and thoughtfully. Definitely take her if you can!
Dense reading, but overall very fun and informative classes. Tests are not hard.
I must say I learned a lot in this class. Was not interested prior to taking it, but ended up learning a lot. Easy grading (take hm), but lots of difficult reading (half the time I skipped reading and still did well).Very cool and easygoing professor. Highly recommend.
This prof is great. There is a lot of reading, but most of it is discussed in groups. She is very insightful and intelligent. I loved the class!
This class is great. 4 Take home essay exams and no final. The only thing is you need to show up to class to get the participation points by writing a summary in class about the readings. She is very nice and the class is an easy A if you show up. I'm a guy and i still enjoyed the discussions
totally intresting class and teacher. highly recommended.
Jen is a great prof. she's brilliant but doesn't make a big deal about it. go to class, follow the reading and this is a pretty easy "A".
Jen is the greatest! She is so intellegent but doesnt flaunt it. She is so easy to learn from, just be a great listener and you will do fine. 2 take home exams, and one take home written essay for the final. Can be alot of reading, but very interesting!
Reed is the****! She made what could have been an extremely dry class into a great one. Balanced lecture with discussion; gave take-home essay assignments which were difficult but interesting.
She was great! Very helpful, informative, and understanding.
Take her classes if you actually want to LEARN something.
You will do great if you listen to her instructions. There is a lot of reading and it is VERY important that you prove you did the reading. Missing classes means missing potentially crucial points from random reading quizzes. If you struggle, she is helpful & willing to clarify things. There are only essay exams(from the readings,)no scantrons.
Jen is so intellegent. She makes women's studies interesting. Take her and you will learn a lot.
i'm a guy: she does NOT male-bash (the class isn't about that). she's very open minded and treats class time like a forum for discussion. if you have a hard time writing focused essays, you may have some difficulty: 3 tests all essays. the class itself offers incite to not just women but all underrepresented people. good class w/ moderate reading.
Jen is the best of the best! She's very kind, understanding, friendly, caring, fair,& extremely intelligent. She's beautiful, butthat isn't the factor that makes her lecture interesting. But,it's her love for teaching and helping others.Take her class if you can. It's very hard to find a professor like her who has all these excellent & beautiful qualities.
Take her! She is so fun and I had a great time in her class. Take home final....Watch clips of TV shows and actually learn about interesting things..No pressure just fun!
Lots of theory but her explanations make the murky at least a little clearer. No in class tests or final. Good class, I learned a lot!
She is a great professor. She is very open-minded and intelligent. There are 2 take home midterms, which consist of 5 one page essays. And 1 five page final. The essays are bassed on the class readings and lectures. It is not an easy class, but it is very interesting. Most people enjoyed attending lectures.
She is really nice, and really cares about the subject. Would recommend for sure. Class is not hard either.
Subjective grader, make sure your essays opinions are in line with Professor Reeds. Took this class over winter session and had my sister, a 3.8 GPA UCLA English graduate, help write my two essays with me, first essay was an 80%, second 75%. Despite doing all the in class participation I still received a C. I suggest taking for Credit/No Credit.
she was easy to listen to. her lectures are never dull and I actually learned a lot. I got a "B" in the class. The papers were not hard.
3 papers and some particpation and that's it. Class is interesting and you get to watch Sex and the City and other great shows. She's very helpful and not too political, which I really respected about her.
Excellent instructor. She really presents the information objectively and welcomes alternative views. Her lectures help you understand what the main points are. Take home essay exams and no cumulative final. In-class assignments. If you are a decent writer & make a serious effort you will do well. Class is interesting & will broaden your horizons.
Loved her. Her lectures are interesting and she is an easy grader.
There's a lot of required reading (Major Book buying) and essays. The class is enjoyable and she goes over very well how globalization and the economy is affecting women world wide.
Teacher was really easy. took her over the winter break. there's a midterm and final for take home. a few inclass points for responding to the topic. Moderate reading and everything she assigns, she goes over it the next day. interesting class.
This teacher is awesome! You watch a bunch of movies, and clips from shows. All the tests are take home, and you have some in class participation points that are random so go to class! This class is fun though so it wont be hard to go to class! I would DEFINETLY take her again!!!
This class is fun and interesting, and you watch A LOT of movies. But she isn't as easy as she seems. She's pretty hard when it comes to the essays.
Amazing class! Fascinating and not bias. Not only about women, but about the state of our global economy. Took it in summer, a lot of reading, but not text books, interesting novels and articles. Professor was pleasant and didnt make us stay the entire 4 hours! Take home midterm, open book final, but kind of a hard grader.
Don't believe the hype! This class isn't as easy as it seems! You have A LOT of writing. Yes you watch movies and film, but your expected to write extensive papers afterwards. All tests are essay format that you get to take home and the final is a ten page paper! She is a picky grader. However you will learn and open your eyes
an excellent teacher, i didn't have high hopes for a womens studies class, but she made her class very interesting! gives alot of essays, but explains them all and will help you if needed
What a great professor! She is smart and interesting. She does a great job of explaining abstract theory. I would take any class she teaches.
Reed is amazing. Her lectures are clear and if one person doesn't understand, she'll explain again until everyone is in the loop. She's beyond helpful and friendly.
Nice professor, but would not take her class again. She was extremely unclear about what she wanted in her papers. Our grade consisted of a couple of participation points and three papers. She doesn't grade papers right away so you don't know how to improve. Lots of reading and not enough discussions about it.
Great Instructor. Totally informed on subject. Engages you in discussion, reading, movies and lectures. Not easy but so interesting you don't mind. Take home essay tests really make you think about the subject. Attendance is mandatory. I'd take her again in a heartbeat. Attended summer session, 2009.
TERRIBLE, TERRIBLE, TERRIBLE!!!!!!!! DON'T TAKE HER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! difficult, boring, hard grader, not very helpful unless you hold the same values as she does, kind of rude sometimes.
I don't really understand why the person below me would give Dr. Reed such a terrible rating. She's awesome. In my opinion I think her assignments are extremely fair, her lectures are fun, and I think she's a pretty easy grader. Maybe if you suck at writing papers you might not be a fan, otherwise I highly recommend her. Easy A in my opinion.
Her class is super easy and super interesting to attend. You usually just break up into small groups to talk about the readings or sometimes watch documentaries/movies or tv episodes. She gives you 5 attendance points for writing a brief paragraph in class about the discussed topic. She does grade her essays really hard so make a real effort
Honestly, she's a nice teacher but her class is extremely dull. She has weekly quizzes for participation, which makes it so that you have to attend. I could see that everyone was on their phone or sleeping because the class was so dull. The class is okay, just be prepared to be bored out of your mind.
I enjoyed this class. I don't think its fair to call it boring if you don't have a real interest in the subject.. I found her lectures highly insightful & fascinating. She helps people understand a need to be conscious of what they are subjected to everyday. She helped my thinking process evolve. Does grade seriously, so make a real effort.
I took her for WGSS 300 that class was easy. However WGSS 205 was a different story, the two "objective" tests were based on two different books and she didn't tell us what to focus on so naturally class average for the test was LOW
An amazing instructor, brings the whole class into the loop and encourages discussion, but always able to bring things back on track. Great sense of humor and will answer questions until you get it. So informative and makes you think about who you are and why. Participation papers and essays, but not unrealistic. Will take her whenever I can!!!
Best professor I have ever had in my academic career. She has changed my life.
7 books were required and used in the class. Dr. Reed is amazing the class Queer Studies is an interesting and exciting class.
Reed is the perfect combination firm and chill. She is approachable, but she also makes sure you understand the concepts she goes over in class by assigning essays that make up most of your overall grade. The readings from this class were boring to me, but at least I had the writing and comprehension skills to back me up and I got a decent grade.
Dr. Reeds class is all lecture. The exams consist of lecture notes and reading material. She does use the textbook, so you need it. She'll allow open-book tests. She's funny, and VERY SMART AND KNOWLEDGEABLE. I enjoyed her class. You don't want to miss class because sometimes there will surprise in-class assignments. Great Teacher overall!
Reed is pretty cool. She's pretty theory heavy but if you understand the concepts you won't have too tough of a time. She also doesn't really put down personal experience... It might be because she's busy daydreaming and sipping her cup of diet coke though...
Clear understanding of what is expected for assignments. Awesome teacher!
Lectures were all over the place and hard to follow, deals with and loves testing on VERY HEAVY theory content, NOT A FAIR GRADER, TONS OF READING from MULTIPLE books, a few LONG essays, and super outdated movies. With all that being said I must mention that she is fairly nice and semi open to students thoughts, feelings, and views.
Dr. Reed is one of my favorite professors of all time. Class has never been easier to attend. I wish all of my teachers were this open, cool, funny, and on top of things. This class was a life changer.
She is boring and not very nice. I took two classes with her and was unimpressed. There are many wonderful professors at CSULB, Reed is not one of them. Avoid!
Very kind lecturer. Extremely clear about the topic she's teaching. I took Lesbian Histories and Cultures. It was interesting! but be prepared to read A LOT! she does put on a lot of DVD's so at times the class felt a little unstructured. The dvd's made me bored often but it's ok. She grades a lot on participation in group work.
Dr. Reed is such a reasonable and likable prof. Very open to hearing other people's opinions and experiences, and does a great job of explaining potentially difficult concepts. Grade is made up of participation and five 1000 word essays, on each of the five required books. The choices for books were great and easy to read. Would highly recommend!
3 papers. 2 essays and 1 research paper. Every week there is either a discussion board or quiz with weekly readings. It's not an easy A but if you actually put in effort, you can easily do well!! Interesting topics too.
Professor Reed clearly knows what she is doing but this class was hard. The articles are complex and require lots of inferecing. Her text are based on what you think she means :/ The essays are equally as hard because she requires you to tie 2 or 3 articles together to make your point which can be daunting because the concepts are difficult!
I learned a lot in this class! Reading quizzes are pretty tough questions arent straight forward, or two possible answers are similar and hard to choose between for the right answer. She gives three essays, and the prompts can be challenging as you have to relate them to the specific readings she assigns.
Dr. Reed is great, the course material is accessible, interesting, and fun. Be ready to engage in critical thinking, but grading is clear and fair. Do the reading, watch the media, have fun.
she was super easy although I hated the quizzes all answers are in the book but they make you second guess yourself she grades easy and there's 5 reflection papers only 250 words super easy and a book review and 2 essays I cannot stress this enough (SUPER EASY) Take her
I took this class asynchronous. Each week there were readings and one assignment which was either a quiz, discussion post, or a reflection. We also had to buy a book which we did a book review on and we did two other essays (one being the final). Overall, this class was not time-consuming at all and was in fact pretty interesting and easy! Take it!
I took this class for a GE which was good but it contained sooo much work. There would be multiple articles, a chapter of a book, or even a video to do the quizzes, discussion, or reflection briefing. Definitely a tough grader when it comes to essays. The quiz questions made you second guess yourself because of the answers and how it is written.
I think this class is perceived as an easy A but there is a lot more reading and work involved than expected. However, if you enjoy or care about the subject it is very enjoyable. Professor Reed is a bit of a harsh grader and the wording on the quizzes can be confusing so the material should be read carefully. Overall, great professor and class.
As a GE course this class requires so much time. The workload can be doable but the grading makes it tedious to do. Although you may learn from the class, the professor overall expects too much from a GE course...
Professor Reed is very helpful and an easy grader!
I absolutely loved taking 101 particularly bc I was interested in the material but she does assign a lot of readings and her quizzes were based on the readings and lectures which are multiple choice but the answer choices are open-ended/open interpretation and sets the questions up to be kinda tricky. Despite that, I loved the content and class!
Took this class as an online asynchronous course. For a GE 101 course, it was ridiculous. The course consisted of three essays, one of which was a book review. I got a 75 on my first essay and 100s on all previous assignments, and in order to get an A in the class, I needed to get 95s on the next two essays. I def don't recommend her. No EC
Great professor! Honestly, not super hard; Just manage your time well so you can complete the reading and assignments. I felt like I always took something away from the readings, and it was interesting to learn more about the constructions of sex and gender.
Great class! Not difficult and the course material is very interesting.
I did not enjoy this class at all. She graded essays very harshly after giving unclear prompts. Was doing too much for a class that is just an elective.
