Very nice and understanding, would recommend her to anyone doing 1080 if you want a prof that will do all she can to help you!A boring course that wasn't so much made interesting as bearable..but there's only so far you can take the course material for 1080.
She is absolutely amazing, came into University English extremely nervous and afraid and she made it extremely interesting. She's very friendly, totally willing to help out, and if you give the course the time and energy it requires, you'll do amazing with her. Also, a very fair marker!!!!
I love Jenn, she is a sweetheart and actually cares about her students. She is very well read and knows what she is talking about. More than willing to offer help where needed and will make time for you if she is booked up. I absolutely recommend her!
Best english prof i've every had
Jen Rowe is by far the best english teacher I could have had in my first year of University. She is a fairly easy marker, as long as you back up your opinion. She loves expressive writers so have no fear of being yourself in her class. She knows her students by name and it makes a postive difference in the way you work. 100% GET THIS PROF!
Do the work, and attend class, you're there. Willing to accept supportable views other than her own. Tells you not to buy the textbook, instead supplying all the reading material for the course. One of the best teachers I've had.
Jen was an EXCELLENT English prof. Did anything she could go give you more marks. Journals worth 10%, say whatever you want; Reading quizzes worth 10%, read the story, easy 8/10. Easy to follow, doesn't ask for much, just that you do your best. She won't fail you if you try.
LOVE HER! She was the best prof i've ever had. Totally would recommend her to anyone!
Awesome! I love her so so so much. She makes boring English class the most fun you'll ever have! She loves to curse, and encourages that her students do too! lol. She's just great!!
If you get her as your prof, consider yourself VERY lucky! She makes every class interesting, she's more than willing to help her students out and she's an easy marker! She doesn't make you waste your money on textbooks because she prints everything out for you. Seriously, she's such a great person. She'll make your semester great! :)
still shocked that im enjoying an english class. not your typical proff. really quirky, down to earth and very sweet. makes things easy to understand and fun. I found her marking not that easy, but I would agree that shes more than fair if you try. definitly get her class if you can! love her hats.
I came to this site to praise mrs. Rowe, she has made my transition from highschool to university amazing. Very clear. Highly recommended!
So sweet and helpful ! Not an easy marker, but carefully explains where your deductions are made ! Makes class very interesting !
A Professor that actually WANTS you to succeed? WHAT A CONCEPT! Seriously, TAKE. HER. CLASS. There shouldn't even be a choice in the matter! TAKE. HER. CLASS!
Best prof I had at MUN! Highly recommend!
Great Prof
LOVE HER!! She is the best prof I had so far. She makes the material very easy to understand ! :)
Super helpful, clear on requirements for the class. Very friendly, is always trying to help you improve your writing. Take this prof if you can, and English will run very smoothly this semester.
Jenn is an absolutely fantastic prof! Very fun and engaging, as well as open to everybody's ideas and thoughts. She is very fair with the in class essays she gives you and gives you a lot of choices. The only thing is that she marks VERY hard. Unless you are a phenomenal writer don't expect an A in her class.
The absolute best!!
what everyone says is true, she is really nice and helpful and classes are fun and she makes it easy to understand. but i still think she marks way too hard for firstyears englisdh course. i think she forgets sometimes that were all not english majors. but course is okay enough.
I was on a waiting list for another prof in the summer but didn't get in. I literally registered for one of the few courses left, Jen's course, on August 25th, afraid all of the quality classes were gone. Not at all. I haven't missed one of her classes this semester. She is a funny, helpful prof who cares about her students. Would highly recommend.
I was told by a friend that Jenn would be a great prof and she over exceeded my expectations! Seriously the most helpful, understanding, and caring prof I've heard/encountered to date. Not to mention if you just attend most of her classes and do all the assignments she will refuse to give you anything under a 50. And the workload isn't heavy!
TAKE JENN ROWE FOR ENGLISH. She's so passionate and generally cares about her students. She's very down to earth and so helpful all the time. One of my favorite profs so far
Jenn is an WICKED prof! She's very helpful, doesn't pile of huge workload on you, she really wants her students to do good, gives you great feedback she not only tells you where you went wrong(and how to fix it) but what you were doing right. Wicked prof and i would recommend her to anyone doing first year english!
A-MAZING!! High standards for writing, hard marker but she is a beautiful woman. Loved every second I spent in her class
Best prof ever! Loved her so much, and attending her class was never a pain. She's very down to earth and lets you know where you have to improve.. I recommend anyone to to take her class, you wont regret it!!
Best teacher I've ever had! Her comments are helpful and if you go to class and try she will do anything to help you pass! If you have to do English and you don't do it with her you're Making a mistake!
Awesome prof. Great personality. She makes it very clear what she's looking for when she grades you. She'll go out of her way to help you with whatever you need. Never a dull moment with Jen!
Amazing prof! She definitely made my first university English course enjoyable. If you don't take at least one course with her while you're in MUN you are missing out!
Jen is just amazing! Gives lots of feedback on essays and doesn't make you buy expensive textbooks, mostly just prints things off for the class or emails links (this is a huge help when you're taking courses with $150 textbooks!) Expects a lot in writing but she's very helpful and uses reading quizzes to boost your mark. Would definitely recommend!
Jen Rowe is an amazing instructor! Her expectations are clear, and you have complete freedom in your writing as long as you're able to back it up. She doesn't assign papers, instead you have one project which is 6 one-page opinions on poems and short stories, which are actually fun to write! She gives incredible feedback, best English teacher ever!
JEN IS THE BEST PROF EVER!!! I intended on registering for her class again, unfortunately she wasn't teaching the course I was doing. I will definitely always remember Jen as she made my first semester at Memorial more than bearable. She gives great feedback and cares A LOT about her students! LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS WOMEN! KEEP ROCKING ON JEN! :)
Jen was one of my favorite profs! I always hated English class in high school but she made this class really enjoyable. She is hilarious and really helpful. Definitely a hard marker but I still really enjoyed her class. Also gives off easy marks in reading quizzes, and instead of an extra essay she gave us an informal project which was a blast!
Jen is honestly one of, if not the best prof at Mun. She is so hilarious and she tries to make class entertaining. But most importantly, she is incredibly nice and personable. She is there for every student, and you'll have a relationship with her like you did with some of your high school teachers. HIGHLY RECOMMEND getting her. Shes amazing.
I'm currently taking 1080 with Jen now... let me just say she is AWESOME! I honestly love her she is such a good prof and makes the course very enjoyable. She is very approachable and more than willing to help you with anything. The only "bad" thing is she really makes you work for your grade. TL;DR she is a great prof but don't expect an easy A
Very insightful and absolutely hilarious. I actually enjoyed her lectures because of her humour. when it comes to grading, she doesnt mess around, but a great prof nonetheless.
Jen Rowe is one of the greatest professors i have experienced at Memorial. She is kind, funny, and really wants you to succeed. I have absolutely no issue with her whatsoever
excellent woman. very energetic and interesting.
if there's an english goddess, it has to be jennifer. she may be a tough grader, but she's never one to refuse helping you get a better mark ( if anything, she WANTS to help you do better 99% of the time ) totally approachable, and would recommend doing so if you're struggling. incredibly down-to-earth, a bit disorganized, but really passionate.
The best prof I could've asked for in English. I didn't get exactly what I wanted for a mark, but Jen's 1110 curriculum and criticism improved my writing greatly. She's so pleasant, understanding and doesn't ask for much from you. Can go off-tangent at times, however she's committed to helping you get a better mark. I'd retake the course if I could
She scared the bejesus out of me the first few lecture, I'm not going to lie but she's hilarious. Lots of easy 5%-10% things to boost your mark up after making it die from essays. Would take again.
Easily my favourite prof at mun, definitely does not mess around when it comes to grading but is extremely approachable and more than willing to help anyone who asks. She doesn't use D2L which made me a bit worried at first but after the first two lectures I had with her I didn't want to miss class anyways. Would definitely recommend to anyone!!
great prof, doesn't use d2L but is more than willing to help her students. Lots of small 5-10% things to boost your mark in
best teacher i have ever had!! enjoyed every class with her! such a funny person, you never know what she is going to say next lol. she will tell you exactly what she wants you to write in your essays, and she will give tips on how to improve for next time, simply listen to her advice and you will do great in the course
Made going to class more fun and engaging. Willing to help anyone with anything in class and outside of class. Gives good feedback on your writing and wants you to succeed. Would take her class again.
She's not a bad prof, but I find her a bit annoying. She doesn't use D2L whatsoever, I don't know if that is a pro or a con for you. She didn't make us buy a textbook, which was nice. I just find her very repetitive and she loses her train of thought often. Also seems somewhat frazzled, I don't know if that's normal for her or not yet.
One of the most understanding profs I've had. She's so kind and makes learning an entertaining experience. Always more than willing to help outside of class and wants to help and see you succeed. Very easy going, but attendance is key. She doesn't use the textbook so everything you need for the course is handed out in class. Would highly recommend.
Jennifer Rowe is kind and always willing to help her students, and very funny as well! She also doesn't make you buy a textbook-which is awesome! She's supper sweet and I would totally recommend, though, I didn't get the grade I was quite hoping for :/ Overall great prof.
Excellent choice. Not much at home work, very easy to work with
Genuinely cares about helping you pass the course. Chooses interesting pieces and is always a blast to be in class. strongly recommend
Really nice prof, cared about her students and gave useful feedback but her course was extremely disorganized.
If you are a first year English student take Jen Rowe! She is the most caring and fair instructor I've ever had, and literally makes things so simple. Her course is pretty laid-back and she makes the lectures worthwhile to attend. Overall amazing prof, you can get the mark you want if you genuinely care and try!
The best English prof I've ever had. She'll print off some works so you don't have to go out and buy textbooks. She's caring, clear and understanding 10/10
So nice, caring and overall a good prof. Grading is very reasonable. I highly recomend taking her for english if possible
10/10 would recommend her for first year English courses! Very caring and understands that you are in other courses besides English, so the work load isn't too intense. She provides lots of handouts which are extremely helpful. She also doesn't use D2L, except to email announcements, etc.
Jennifer is a nice person, but is a very hard grader. It is very hard to improve your grades in her class, her criteria differs dramatically from the other professors at MUN. Although, she offers feedback on your work her feedback is not always helpful for future assignments. Not sure that I would take her again as she is nice but frustrating.
Jen is such an amazing prof! She really makes the class enjoyable. The essays had clear instructions and she gave a lot of feedback so you can improve for the next one. There were a lot of handouts, but she didn't make you buy the textbook. She was always available outside of class and she does everything she can to help her students.
I was extremely disappointed with her after reading her reviews and expecting her to be so great. Not a bad prof exactly but so disorganized, her course and lectures were all over the place. She got easily off track and her grading was not the clearest as to where the marks came from.
Nice person but such a hard grader! I currently have her for 1090, and nobody in our class has gotten anything above 65% on an essay. She "doesn't believe" in giving anything above 80%. She also has no clear grading rubric, as her marks are only in increments of 5.
Jen wasn't a bad prof, it's just so difficult to good in her course. she says that anything above an 80 is impossible she assumes that 55 on an essay is a "good thing" i would not recommend taking her course if you're looking to do well in english.
Jen is an amazing professor! She's a tough grader, but if you're really looking to learn, she'd be the right pick. It's mostly about paying attention in class. Her feedback can prove to be really helpful, especially towards the finals. Her classes are fun and pretty informative.
Tough grader is an understatement. Did not provide much or adequate feedback. Went to see her outside of class and she still didn't give me much feedback. Do not recommend!
She's a nice and funny person but, don't take her class if you don't like in class essays; that's almost all you get graded on. Shes also a tough grader and doesn't use D2L.
Jen will remember everything that you tell her from the first to last class. Overall, she tries to make the lectures fun. The course content was diverse but she provided guidelines before each of the midterms. Shes a tough grader but it motivates you to do better. If you get an A, you're probably the first in class.
Jen is by far the best prof I've had since I started. She's super fun and nice and tries to make her classes as fun and interesting as possible. She gives out handouts as notes but if you go to class you wont have to study because she explains it all. Your marks in 1090 will probably start low but if you stick with her you'll see your marks go up.
Amazing prof, but attendance is a must. Very flexible with make up assignments if you do miss a class, reasonable grader and definitely would take again.
She's a sweetheart and will give you handouts instead of books so you don't have to buy anything! Her class is super fun and full of jokes. It is the only class i never skipped. She's a fair grader in my opinion, you need to follow up with her remarks and make sure to show that you care and willing to improve and she will help you a lot.
Very sweet and caring. Clearly laid out course outline. Almost no homework and no preparation required before any assessment. Also, very approachable and willing to help.
Jennifer Rowe is absolutely amazing! She is so helpful, the workload for her course is reasonable and the material is interesting. She provides stories/poems so you dont need expensive textbooks. I enjoyed all aspects of her course, especially the Reader-Response Project. Im taking her again for 1110 next term and would recommend her to anyone:)
Cares about students a lot, but she is an extremely hard grader. There are 3 in class essays, which were very difficult to tell what she wanted you to write. The reader response project is an easy grade booster. She is very disorganized and wastes a lot of class time talking about unrelated topics which left her rescheduling almost everything.
Shes nice and all but the way she has chosen to organize this course is a whole mess She uses just three essays and a quiz to make up the whole 80% of grading done in class This means that if you score poorly on one thing, youre screwed. Also, each essay is a different kind so, there is absolutely 0 opportunity to learn from your mistakes and improve
The first test will probably hit you hard. But after the first test your marks should improve. She says that this course is a learning curve which is very true. She's very funny and will do the best she can to prepare you for a test. She does her job and she's laid back.
The thing that I like most about Jen is that she is laid back, but yet still gets her job done. As long as you come to class and do your work, you will pass. I had to do very little work outside of class to get my B. I would recommend her to students who are only doing English because they have to. English with her is very painless.
Shes a very hard marker but shes very funny and cares a lot about her students. Going to her classes are mandatory as she do not use D2L for anything other than emails, overall highly recommend her as a prof because she will really help you improve your writing.
She is really nice and she tries to make the lectures interesting.
She begins the semester by saying that almost no one gets an A, and that she refuses to change grades. Grades are based heavily on in-class essays. Online resources and D2L are not used, so don't skip class. To do well you have to mimic the way she writes and use words she uses frequently. Not bad, but makes you work hard to do well.
Excellent prof! Only downside is she is very old school and doesnt use technology at all, attendance is a must!
this was for 1090 (old 1080)everyone else loves her, but i worked so hard in this class to improve and never got above a 65, nor did anyone i know get above a 65. she said in the beginning of class she starts grading at a 75 then goes down. (75100 in her opinion???) and that she failed her first english class so its ok. sweet lady but stay away!!
I took his online/remote and found the workload not hard, 4 or 5 essays for the whole semester. Found she was a hard grader though
Took this remotely found she never really taught anything and just was like here write a few essays and hope for the best. She also never responded to my emails (asking questions or trying to improve on the comments she made on my previous essays). I wouldn't take another class with her
We just had 4 essays due one of which is technically considered our final, she posted plenty of notes for each essay. If you ever needed help or a better explanation she was always there to help and responded to emails quite quickly. The only reason I said I would not take her again is I heard she expects a HUGE improvement if she has you twice.
She's very understanding when it comes to student stress, but it does not seem like she has a handle on teaching online as compared to in person. Graded on 4 + a final essay and 4 read-responses (introduced last minute). Doesn't post lectures or notes for the course. Very heavy grading criteria despite this, especially for a first level course.
took this remotely, was told to read four separate novels in a semester, writing an 1000 word essay and 700 word personal response on each, as well as a final essay. as of right now this semester ends in 4 days and our last novel essay and final essay have yet to be introduced. incredibly difficult grader, grades on material that hasnt been taught
I'm gonna be honest... She's pretty good, Very decent course load and gives good feedback and also replies to email very quickly(which is great!) but she's a very tough grader honestly, I feel like some of the essays I wrote were quite good but she still gives me 70-75 which ain't too bad but an 80+ would be great haha. She's good so enjoy!
Professor Rowe is great! she makes English a fun course which is not an easy thing to do. Her assignments are very clear and straightforward with instructions given. her timed essays are well timed and easy. Overall her class was not a struggle, and she made clear instructions on what is to be done each week. Great prof, easy course, legendary!
Jennifer Rowe is a super sweet and accomodating professor, especially when it came to online classes. She gave amazing feedback and was very hepful when you didn't quite understand something. This class was definetly one of the most laid back I've ever completed.
Jen is super sweet but she is a tough grader. Your English has to be on point in order to get an A. Her classes are also very enjoyable and she is really funny.
Currently taking her online class and she's very easy to get ahold of and answers all of your questions as soon as possible. very understanding that things can happen like being ill and will accommodate you for that. All her notes and assignments are clear and her grading is very reasonable.
Nice prof, a bit tough of a grader but not bad!
I took ENGL1090 online with Jennifer, I found her to be a very tough grader, she did give pretty good feedback (which I tried to learn from in the next essays) but no matter what I did I got around the same mark every time. Not a heavy course load, but I found it difficult to get anything above a 70.
She was nice to everyone and was very clear to understand.
I found going over my marks with her 1-on-1 much more helpful than anything else. I didn't do the best with her teaching style but thats not her fault. You don't have to buy books, she provides printed short stories/poems. She is not a fan of technology so don't even bring a laptop. Overall she tries to make sure everyone understands.
Amazing Prof, very understanding and gives great feed back on work. Lectures were never boring and she always had something funny to say.
My favourite prof of the semester. Class was interesting, only homework was reading a few short stories ( max 5-10 pages)
prof. Rowe is very old school, but is an amazing prof. she could be reviewed as a tough grader but she gives very good feedback and my marks climbed throughout the term. would 100% take again.
Loved taking a class with Jen. She is hilarious, engaging, and wants the best for her students. Options for bonus points. I have recieved my best English grades in this course. Her feedback was great. Super accessible. Attendance is mandatory but that is fine because she's great!
Jennifer is such a caring prof. Her papers are relatively hard to do well, she doesn't hand out A's for free. Wrote 4 essays, most of which are in person. Her papers are relatively hard to do well on, she doesn't hand out As for free. However, she offers helpful notes and guidance on how to fix things for the next one. Would take again for sure.
Loved taking 1090 w/ Jen! Made class enjoyable to attend, very clear instruction, & excellent feedback. There are 3 main in-class essays. While the content quiz at the end of the semester is challenging, there are opportunities to boost your mark back up. 1090 is a big transition from high school, and Jen tries to make it as smooth as possible.
Professor Rowe is an amazing instructor!! She gives super clear instructions and examples of how she wants work completed. Prof Rowe is also super kind & you can tell that she cares about her students. Would definitely go out of my way to take her class again!
She seemed like a great person and I did take this class online but I found that she was a little unorganized. It took a while to receive marks back. She was a medium grader, but we only did heavy-graded work. Everything graded was worth 20-25%. I'm sure things would be different if the class was taken in person, she's nice!
Jen is incredible. She makes it very clear what she wants in her essays and if you follow those instructions you'll do great. Highly recommend.
The key to Jen's class is to read her notes very thoroughly and attend every lecture. Her notes are very clear in what she wants you to say so don't stary away. My recommendation is to meet with her after the first test if you do well or not. She will go through it with you very thoroughly and you will have a clearer idea of what she's looking for.
not sure what she was like in person, but online she is horrendous. She is very absent and barely posts anything for a while then randomly appears with an incredibly long announcement full of random stuff, half of it making no sense. For someone who doesn't provide clear instructions on writing pieces she is a very hard grader. would not recommend
Jennifer Rowe is a nice woman, and she cares about her students and she's easy to talk to, however she is a tough grader, in my opinion she grades far too harshly for a beginner English course, and she's not SUPER clear on exactly what she's looking for in evaluations, so its easy to lose marks. nice person but personally wouldn't recommend.
I took 1110 online as it was the only way I could fit the course in my schedule. Only to then have 3 of the big assingments including a course content exam which covered every single piece of information in the notes given this semester to happen on friday nights from 7-8:30.She was a very hard grader and was not clear on where we could get better.
Jennifer is a very tough grader, and is not very clear on her standards for her work, making it difficult to achieve them. Would not recommend this prof, very tough grader for a beginner English course.
Jen seems like a lovely woman, but she has canceled one third of her classes this semester. She grades tough on essays considering it's a first year English course. Not a horrible professor by any stretch, but she is very disorganized. Don't expect to get essays back in a reasonable time frame!
Jen is really good at her job, but I think she could be a little less harsh for an intro class. She cancelled class a lot this sem, and would talk about her personal life too often in my opinion. But overall thought she explained concepts well and really helped us prepare for our essays. Give's a lot of feedback. Almost gave us too many notes tho.
She cancelled quite a few lectures this semester, but she is a lovely human. She wants her students to succeed, and is very accessible (in person and via email). Light course load, had to do some reading on our own, but only two in person essays, a content exam, a worksheet and a final project. Plenty of very resources provided to succeed
Jenn seemed like a nice prof, however she canceled a lot of lectures the past semester. Grades harshly on essays and stated at the beginning of the semester that unless your essay could hold up in a fourth year english class, you weren't getting over an 80. Her feedback on the first essay was decent however for the second she didn't give any.
Class discussion was great and you always got different points of view based on the topic at hand. People always say her feedback is great, and I'm sure it is if I could read it. I couldn't read her writing therefore had to go to her and ask why I had long marks on my essays. She always knows what she is talking about but is very unorganized.
You NEED to go to as many classes as you can as she posts next to nothing online. Things she mentions in class will be tested and if you miss a class you'll miss a small term or something important. She is a very hard grader and you don't have much to improve your grade with as there's very little evaluation
Rowe is a tough but fair grader. Her assignments are challenging, but she provides helpful guidance. Unstuck ai was a game-changer for my essay prep.
Got upset when people cited on the first assignment, I dropped right away! In instructions it said "Not required", this is clearly not the same as telling students NOT to do something. However, she took marks off for everyone who cited the article used because they "did not follow instructions". Losing points for insuring protocol was ridiculous.
She's a bit of a tough grader but she is very clear with what she expects so getting a good grade is quite achievable. Generally not much work outside of the main assessments and only had to read few a couple short PDFs per week. Good experience overall.
I had Jen for 1090, and decided to take her again this semester for 1110. Although she can be a "tough grader", her intentions are very clear, and marks are often a reflection of following proper guidelines. She is an excellent professor and very knowledgeable. I loved her 1110 course. The content exam is a challenge if not properly prepared!
Very lecture based, something so small can be mentioned and it would be all over the midterm. Very unorganized and canceled class multiple times
She is a tough grader kinda harsh on the feedback when you get your papers back, But she is clear on what she expects for you to achieve a good grade. She does talk ALOT and even missing a class can put you behind.
Girl is a YAPPER. No homework, everything done in class, aswell as no technology she LOVES her paper notes. She was clear with what she expected before every assignment/test. Tough grader but gives great feedback, I did genuinely get better and better!
the course load was pretty light. There were 2 in-class essays, a content exam, a poetry exam, and a final project. I found she was a sensible grader and really enjoyed her class. She is extremely funny even when she is not trying. i would absolutely take her class again.
