She is very nice and really wants you to do well in her class which is not normally the case with most teachers. It is very easy to understand her and if you put in effort she will def put in effort to help you as well!
Best math teacher ever. So super nice and really wants you to succeed. She will help you until you really understand everything. Highly recommend! She isn't a stuck up math professor. She teaches like a student to students.
great teacher, very helpful outside of class, works with you outside of class to help you get the grade you want
She was a great professor to me! I'm not good at math at all, so I took an easier course which could be why I did so well, but she made things easy to understand. She gave us handouts to fill in every class so notes were really organized. You don't use the book. She gives a 1-3 question quiz every class as a quick review. Glad I took this class.
Dr. Royal is the best preclac teacher in the math department. I took precalc for two months last semester and had to drop because my teacher was horrible. Dr. Royal genuinely cares about you and wants you to do well in the class. She is always available for help whether that be office hours or via email. She simplifies difficult concepts!
Dr. Royal is a great professor but even a better person. She had just had a baby, and was teaching the class for the first time, but still made the class a priority. Very helpful and always in good spirits. If you go to class, pay attention, and study just a little it is an Easy A. Textbook not needed
Dr. Royal is amazing! She really cares about teaching things the right way and explains everything clearly. Overall, MATH 3200 is a difficult course by nature, but Royal makes it as understandable/clear/comfortable as possible. Would recommend!
When you are in class taking notes, the class seems pretty straightforward. She is clear and concise & the notes are simple. However, these do not prepare you for the test at all. Her grading is extremely specific, & you can get 5 points counted off for using 3 words where you could have used 1. I've always loved math but this class is awful.
For the most part, the homework is graded very harshly. If you read the book and go by what the book says is how you set up a proof,or look in the back at what it considers the right way to do a proof for some problems, you will get a bad grade and told it's not how you do it. It's almost as if the book is only there for homework, not learning
Dr. Royal is the best precalc teacher ever. She is super nice, very forgiving and gives lots of attempts for redemption.
Professor Royal is a nice individual, but was not a good proofs teacher. The proofs in this class are relatively simple. However, the homework/tests are meticulously graded with poor feedback. It's hard to know where to improve and where the points are being lost. Even when a problem is correct in the textbook, it is incorrect on homework and exams
It is so obvious that Dr. Royal cares for her students. She was constantly accessible through groupme and office hours. She took time to explain concepts in various ways until everyone had a clear understanding. Although her grader does knit-pick the homework, Dr. Royal really worked to have everyone receive good grades on the tests!
Jen was honestly an amazing precal teacher and I definitely recommend her. Going to her class was needed in order to understand and she was very helpful if you had any questions. She's also super nice and easy to talk to.
Dr. Royal genuinely cares about you as a person and will do anything to help you understand the material. Amazing lectures, little amount of HW, study guides are similar to tests, and an AMAZING person & professor. At the end of the semester, she fell down the stairs and broke both of her feet and STILL had virtual office hours to help us out!
Dr. Royal is the best precalc professor at UGA. She is definitely willing to help and make sure you understand that material. I would definitely recommend going to her office hours . Her in class notes are extremely helpful and clear to understand. She is very understanding to the struggles that students go through and will help.
Dr. Royal is an awesome teacher. I took her for MATH 2250 and she is everything you could want in a professor. She is kind, caring, and an overall great professor. Definitely take her if you have the option! She does assign a decent amount of homework but they reflect what is on the exams.
Dr. Royal is amazing!! She is so passionate about teaching which makes it really easy to enjoy the class. She understands that calculus is a hard subject, offers curves when needed and also will occasionally throw in an easy 100 for a quiz grade. There is a bunch of homework but as long as you're diligent you can get it done! Go to office hours!!
She is very funny and makes class as interesting as possible. She provides hand outs and does clear understandable notes. As a previous AP Calc student, the class was super easy. She is always available and providing help during and after office hours.
Dr. Royal is one of the best math professors I have had. She is very caring and will make sure you understand the content. There is a lot of homework, but it is assigned so she makes sure you understand what's being taught. The tests aren't really that difficult, but the final is a mass exam made by the math department, so it is a bit harder.
Dr. Royal is hands down the best math teacher I've head EVER. Yes, her class is challenging due to the subject matter, but Dr. Royal's handouts and availability make calculus manageable. I have grown up absolutely despising math, but her class provided a new way of thinking about math and i honestly don't hate it THAT much anymore. 10/10 teacher
She had very clear lectures and was available during weekly office hours as well as by appointment. It was clear that she wants her students to succeed, not just pass her class. I took AP Calculus 1 in high school, but this was a different level of difficulty, but as long as you are willing to learn, you will do fine.
Avoid taking this course with her at all costs. Seems impossible to succeed.
Class consists of little lecture time. Textbook itself is very vague and does not help with learning the material. Very nice professor but class is conducted poorly.
Royal is one of the best teachers Ive ever had, which is rare in college. Her tests are difficult, but fair. If you are having issues, go to her office hours; they help so much, and she usually brings cookies!! The class is flipped so your success is all on you, but she gives you every oppurtunity to succeed. Love her. Beware of question 5!!!!
Dr. Royal doesn't really lecture, she expects you to learn/teach yourself while she kinda guides you. She expects you to ask questions and talk to her, so she'll sometimes be vague in class on purpose. When you do talk to her, she's super helpful. Tests are hard, and she's a tough grader, but if you do the work and study hard, you'll be prepared.
This class is one where you seem to understand what is going on when you try the presentation problems and attend lecture, but somehow you do not do near as well on the tests and are not sure why.
Dont mind the negative reviews. The course is no pushover, but complete the homework and reading, and youll do fine. Office hours are available including appointments which are good opportunities to come in if youre confused. Royal gives good feedbacks on what youre doing wrong and spends time working on what you need help with.
Extremely caring professor who involved the class in participation problems every class meeting but the practice was very beneficial. Tests are hard (45% of grade) and coming to class isn't required but strongly encouraged as she sometimes gives pop-participation things as you walk out the door. quizzes are easy and homework was fairly graded.
I've had to take this class twice (bcuz it's difficult) the material is hard to grasp and it's a different, upper level way of thinking. Anyone here knocking her teaching has never taken an upper level course where students are expected to do on their own with professor facilitation. Shes super caring a great professor, that's why I took her twice.
Dr. Royal is a great professor; she care immensely about students. Lectures revolve around 2 student presented proofs a day, and a critique of them. This part of the class was frustrating at first but it is probably the most effective teaching method for proofs. This class is HARD, but Dr. Royal is your best bet.
One of the most caring professors I have ever had. As long as you put in the work, she will do everything she can to help you succeed. But it is a hard class and Dr. Royal is a hard grader.
She grades against what she teaches in class. She is usually a super harsh grader and only gives credit when you do a problem exactly as she wants it, no more and no less. Other professors and graders may give full credit on a problem that she wouldn't give a single point on. To save your GPA, take the class with someone else
This class is HARD, but Dr. Royal is extremely relatable & cares about her students and their academic success. She makes this class tolerable and is always willing to help however she can, as long as you're willing to put in the work. I will 110% take any class she teaches because she's the best!
Dr. Royal has been, easily, one of my favorite professors I've had. She was very caring about her students' learning, as well as their well-being. She was super nice and answered any question you asked. I was part of the new 'active learning initiative', which I really enjoyed as opposed to a traditional flipped-classroom setting. Would take again.
Absolutely amazing calc 1 professor! She really cares for her students & really want to everyone to succeed. Don't be afraid to reach out to her for help & utilize her office hours. Her class itself isn't super hard- but the content of the class can be difficult. This is a class you can not skip if you want to do well.
Dr. Royal is a really good professor who is very engaging in her class. She teaches a flipped class, so if that's not your style then don't take her. I really enjoyed it though and felt like it was beneficial. She is funny and will get to know you as a student. I think her class may be deemed hard because of the content, but she explains well.
Everything is graded without much feedback, so you don't know how you can improve to get better grades and you won't get as much credit as you might think. She is nice, but this class is too stressful to be worth it
Dr. Royal is the best professor I've ever had and a truly wonderful person. It's a flipped classroom so you really have to do the homework. This is not an easy class, but if you do all the problems you should be set.
She makes things very difficult and grades way harsher than other professors who teach the class. Go to offices hours to see what she expects, otherwise you'll fail. If your proofs aren't exactly the same as what she wants, you won't get all the points on the problem.
Notes don't help, homework doesn't help, nothing helps you prepare for those tests. She will only accept what she tells you in office hours on the homeworks, even though your proofs are right. It's full credit or no credit for her class and it's very difficult to get full credit on any problems
It's an active learning classroom, so you're expected to watch an hours worth of math videos she created before almost every class. These videos are very helpful and give you good basic knowledge to build on in class in your designated group. Her grading is hard, but when you understand what she expects it becomes clearer. Super caring and smart!
Dr. Royal cares about your learning! If you put in effort into this class, it will pay off. She is happy to help you during class /office hours. This class will push your comfort zone from a typical math class, but you will leave having learned a lot. Take Dr. Royal if you want to leave the class knowing a professor cares about your learning!
dr. royal was super cool. she gives great feedback and is almost always available to help students when needed. she was my favorite teacher this past semester. she does give pretty much nightly homework, but its mainly just coping down video nots, then applying the same concept to a few other questions, nothing too hard at all! highly recommend her
Dr Royal is a weird one. I have only had her for an online class so maybe she is different in person, but she was not a great online professor. The grading in the class is horrendous. While yes, she does give extra credit, the amount of homework alone makes it not worth it. Thirty six homework grades in a summer session all for it to count 5% total
Dr. Royal is amazing. Super-duper nice and is willing to go above and beyond to help you learn the material. Her live Zoom lectures are EXTREMELY helpful and they're recorded. The material is difficult, but she helps you find the best way to approach the problems. Daily homework sets but they really help with the course. Royal is the best math prof
Dr. Royal is one of the best instructors I ever had! The class was fully online, but she utilized class time well and was super accessible outside of class. There was a lot of homework, but it was definitely manageable as long as you stayed on top of it. She also gave a good amount of extra credit and was super flexible with COVID things! Take her!
Royal is your average, chill teacher. She does a great job at explaining topics and showing you EXACTLY how she wants them to look. The only grades are homework, quizzes, and a final- but she is good about giving credit where credit is due. I found the class to be very feasible even though proofs are hard. I recommend her highly!
Overall, Professor Royal was great! Grades are base on quizzes, the final, and homework (just try on homework and you'll get credit). She provided us with an online textbook. She cares and understands that we have a lot on our plates. Some proofs are harder than others but you will learn! Take her!!!
Dr. Royal is an angel. Class is nit-picky, but that is just the context of the course. Word for word definitions on quizzes so study each word and symbol exactly and you'll get a 100, don't and you'll get a 0. Tests are hard, but fair. She is extremely caring and accessible outside of class. She makes sure you are doing well as a person first.
The grading system is quite unique because it's based on how many outcomes you pass/fail. Professor Royal is among one of the most understanding instructors I've ever had. The workload is high though with a usual 2-3 hw's and 1 quiz every week. But as long you finish things and manage your time well, you'll be alright
The best professor I've ever had. She does a flipped classroom style, but gives at least two opportunities to achieve outcome credit, and usually will give more if the class needs it. Lecture videos on elc are very good; she is very clear, understanding, and knows what she's doing. Amazing professor and person. Would for sure take her again.
Dr. Royal is a queen. best math professor I've ever had. you're forced to learn the material and it definitely pays off. it is a flipped classroom but it allows for a lot of in class practice. she uses ESPN method and gives several tries to get your grade up. I would definitely take her again. be ready to put in the work for a good grade!
Dr. Royal is the best professor I have had at the University of Georgia. She really cares about her students and is always there to help you when you get stuck. The preclass is very helpful, and the outcome grading makes sure you understand every part of the class. At the end of the course, you know Calculus 3. I would 100% retake her.
One of the most fantastic professors I have ever had the honor of having. I had an A most of the semester and ended up absolutely bombing the final, but I still think she is absolutely amazing. She gives every opportunity to succeed, yet will still make you work for it. She is also very genuine and accommodating. I can't recommend her enough
Dr. Royal is the best professor I've taken. While there is a lot of homework, it gives you the opportunity to go to class and ask questions where she is extremely helpful. Different grading scale, but it's very forgiving and most are a huge fan of it. The final is tough but doable. Take Dr. Royal!
I never write these reviews, but Dr. Royal is hands down the best professor I've ever had. She cares about EVERY students success but still makes you work for your grade. Multiples chances are given to achieve each outcome. Calc 3 is a hard class but she makes it manageable. Very caring and overall great person!
I've taken at least 15-20 classes at UGA. Dr. Royal is by FAR the nicest and kindest professor I have ever met in my entire college career. She is very personal. If you have a smaller class, she makes it a point to remember your name and face. This class was not based off of individuals grades but rather achieved outcomes and effort.
She's very organized and its clear what you need to do to pass. The hardest part was the tests that would have a slight curveball in the problem not previously shown in the practice test. She grades very fair though and will give you credit on knowing how to do the problem even if you made mistakes. You have to practice the given problems to pass.
Dr. Royal is probably my favorite math professor that I have had! She is super encouraging and supportive. Her grading system is set up in a way that you are graded on your mastery of each concept which I feel is really helpful in the learning process. You also get at least two chances to show your mastery on each topic as there is a quiz each week
So sweet and genuinely cares about her students. The course wasn't bad at all because she structures it with weekly small quizzes rather than big tests. Pre-lectures are almost daily though, you learn a lot outside of class and spend class time reviewing homework. She gets tricky with grading sometimes
One of the most kind and genuine professors out there. Truly cares for her students and wants them to learn as much as possible. The class itself is not at all difficult, most of the grade was based on weekly quizzes with plenty of opportunities to get back on track.
Professor Royal uses a course structure much different than most other classes. Instead of a percentage grade, she grades everyone based off of how many course objectives they receive credit for from a weekly quiz. She's also really nice, eager to help, and wants all of her students to succeed!
disregarded student concerns during the pandemic
Don't expect much help. She expected us to "figure it out ourselves" when we had questions on anything, even if it wasn't homework related. Professors should be there to guide us but she doesn't want to. Points get taken off for simple things, even for something specifically used during lecture that's needed for a proof. Will strongly avoid
Dr. Royal was super kind and helpful and always willing to go over a concept again and again until everyone got it. Very writing intensive and you definitely have to put in the effort, but Dr. Royal will provide you all the resources you need to succeed. Free textbook btw, and honors optioning is available for any honors students :)
If I had any regular professor, I would not have had to repeat this class with a different one (and do so much better). She makes this class a nightmare and doesn't understand that we are new to writing proofs, yet she grades us as if we've been doing this our whole life. 0/5, not deserving of 1 star
She was an amazing professor for Calc 3. The only exam you take is a final. Instead, you take quizzes every week that have different outcomes that you can either pass or fail and you get two different chances to try and make them. A super lenient grader would definitely take again.
She is the best math professor I have ever had. She does outcome based grading with multiple chances to pass, so the class is not super stressful, but you still learn everything you need to know. She is also just the sweetest person ever and super understanding about missed work and due dates. If you have the chance to take her, take her!
Second class I took with Royal and she's still amazing! This class was a research class and she gives you so much freedom to learn and do well on your own while still being a guiding hand. I wish I could take every math class with her.
Very easy class to get an A in; still gotta do the work though. Not the only professor i've seen do the outcome grading system but by far the best at doing. She's always looking for partial credit to make sure you understand the topic and will always meet you halfway. Always able to be reached on email or groupme. Would def take her again for math
Dr. Royal's class is definitely set up differently, with the reverse classroom model, but she does a great job making sure to keep everyone on the same page. She genuinely cares about her students, and has plenty of office hours to help her students.
Dr. Royal is a good professor. Calc 3 is a hard class, but make sure that if you don't understand something, make sure that you get help because every outcome counts. The class setup was interesting because it was outcome based. The grading system was odd, and the final exam has heavy weight.
Dr. Royal is amazing!!! Super helpful and easy to reach by email/office hours. She grades by the outcome system so you have at least 2 tries to get something right. If she notices people are struggling she gives another chance to try again. 2-3 hw questions for completion due before class and quizzes every week but no tests. 100% recommend her!!!
Calc 2 is a hard class, but JR makes it manageable! A flipped classroom, so you watch videos before class and turn in an assignment. Weekly quizzes and only a final exam. Is very caring, I would definitely take her again!
She's the G take her. She's super understanding as she's also a student right now and is a great teacher. Weekly quizzes graded using the "outcome" method and a final that she makes in the same format as the quizzes.
Overall, she was very kind and very caring for your wellbeing. Your grade depends on the number of outcomes(topics) you achieve in the class through quizzes every Friday. Homework before every class which is a little rough since it is a 4hr class. Would take again and she wants to make Calc ii a good experience, which is a challenge in itself.
The textbook is free online. It's a flipped learning; you watch videos and do practice problems before each class and have a quiz every Friday. She's very understanding and grades with outcomes instead of getting a number grade. You get multiple chances on each quiz. There are no tests, but there is a final.
Very caring teacher. Clear about how she will grade her class. Flipped class. Textbook free online. She makes great videos over each topic that are very helpful for her quizzes and final. Would most definitely recommend.
She is by far one of the best teachers I've had at UGA. Her class is an easy A as long as you do the preclass assignments which take at most 30 min. She's super understanding and you also get two chances on every quiz. Very understanding to any questions you have and quickly replies to emails. If you can get her, I definitely recommend it!!
Dr. Royal is THE BEST teacher for Calc III. She uses a flipped class model so you take notes before class and then work on problems in the class where she is available for questions and clarification on the content. We do thorough problems in class and quizzes every Friday. Very good professor
Dr. Royal is the best!! Her flipped classroom and outcomes-based grading system made the class super low stress while also keeping me motivated to learn the content. You get 2+ tries on everything, which makes it super easy to get an A if you stay on top of studying. She is by far the best option for Calc III!
I can't say I love Royal, she is very different from every other math teacher at UGA, she really likes to talk a lot about things not related to her class during class time, but other than that she is great, her course is easy and well formmated and it is very easy to take notes and keep track of your progress in this class
I love Dr. Royal but flipped classes do not work for me. She still gets four stars because she is very caring professor and wants you to suceed. The only possible grades are A/B/C/F no +/- because she grades based on outcomes. There are 11 quizes and a final. I perfer taking 2-3 exams but the quizzes are low stress and can be attempted twice.
I really enjoyed Professor Royal's class, and she taught the concepts pretty well. The class itself is pretty easy, but I wasn't a fan of the grading criteria. The criteria is well outlined, but its pretty stressful to have quizzes almost every week that are pretty important, as you can only miss two questions on a quiz to end with an A.
Super caring and available professor. Graded on an outcome-based format, so tiny quizzes each week, but you need to get pretty much all of them correct to get an A. Flipped classroom format, with just additional example problems in class each day.
I would never take a class with her again. She claims many things then doesn't follow through with them in grading. She grades on an ESPN basis, where you pass the outcome with an E or S, but is extremely harsh and will fail you for an outcome based on the smallest mistake. She's hardly accessible outside of class and offers little to no help.
Her grading is bogus . No partial credit is given and you're likely to fail most tests. Impossible to get an A.
Truly one of the most caring professors i have ever had. She cares about you learning the material, not about getting everything right. If you work hard and do all of the assignments, you will get an A. Couldn't recommend Dr Royal enough, she is accessible outside of class and understanding about personal matters that affect your performance.
She is the toughest grader I have ever encountered, and she grades on a pass/fail scale. You have 2 attempts to master everything you're tested on, but you have to do it exactly how she wants (you can't learn using outside/different methods), which you have to do bc she doesn't teach the material and expects you to figure it out + flipped class
Jennifer Royal is hands down the worst professor I have ever had. Impossible to get an A in the class. If you make a C on homework and make a 100 on the final and 100 on the quizzes you will get a C in the class. If you care about your livelihood and want to work/do anything in your free time, DO NOT TAKE JENNIFER ROYALS CLASS.
Professor Royal was great. I was on track for an A practically all semester until the final which kind of killed me. The textbook is written by her and a few peers so she's familiar with the material. My only thing is that this is a flipped class, but attendance is mandatory so that can be a bit annoying, but other than that she's great.
