Jennifer is one of a few good professors to come on campus recently.her lectures focus on important details and she uses images and common ideas to help engage the students.her labs are tough along with the assignments.she excepts no late work.expectations for college students, but she is very helpful.not to mention she's cute when she's giggling!
Be prepared for quizzes every day, very hard exams, and no breaks my class average was in the low 70%
The class is NOT EASY! Jennifer's favorite course of the year, and you know what that means... agressive grading on assignments, quizzes, and exams. Lab doesn't help either. Jennifer is one professor who is willing to help out and is concerned on the performance of the class. BE ADVISED, BE READY TO STUDY HARD!
good teacher, organzied, intelligent, will explain concepts. but you have to say that you dont understand. interesting class, fun field trip, make sure you do the homework, and study.
Great teacher! quizzes every monday on the lecture material(only)from the previous week. Tests have 20 multiple choice questions and the rest short answer. Tests tend to have hard to understand questions, but typically not that bad. Just study the notes a lot and visit her during office hours and you'll be fine.
Good teaching style. She writes everything on board that need to know for lecture exam. Quizzes each week for both lecture and lab but this really prepares you for exams. Very accessible teacher and she wants students to understand and succeed. Took night class and her energy made it possible to stay awake.
Kind, but in a condescending way. Extremely rigid, don't expect to be able to negotiate a grade. Whether she's wrong or not, she will not change her mind. Class was interesting, and labs were fun. Must have mind reading ability in order to get a decent grade, as she grades based on what she thinks you should do, not on what she actually tells you.
Very nice. Labs where fun, expect A LOT of work to get a good grade in this class. Not an easy A. Good teacher though, one of the few I have really learned something from.
Jen is a great teacher. Her enthusiasm is contagious. She has a real passion for what she teaches.
Hard class. Lots of work required. Jen is a good teacher though.
Schramm is a good teacher come to class and pay attention and you won't have to read the book. Alot of little things to do but very little really hard homework.
A fun class, good teacher. Book reading was never required, I never used mine. Group project was ridiculous. Tests are difficult so pay attention during lectures. Don't try the field trip unless you can climb cliffs and hike a couple miles uphill in sand and mud (but it was still fun).
Very challenging exams. Quizes were very helpful. Was able to make biology interesting to me. Kept me interested. A lot of group work in lecture. Very approachable and enthusiastic and wants you to succeed in her class. You knew what to expect on the exam but expected a lot of detail. I highly recommend her. Don't buy the text unless you really lea
I am a person that has a very hard time with Biology. It has been the worst subject for me, but Mrs. Schramm made think of it in another way. She made the lessons seem very interesting. I think she is one of the best teachers! If you pay attention to her lectures, you will do good in her class.
Dr. Schramm is a great teacher. She really loves what she teaches and shares that enthusiasm with her class. Her class is hard and requires a lot of work and studying, but Dr. Schramm is always willing to spend some time out of class helping with the tough concepts. I highly recommend her!
So many have dropped this class, wish I could. Teaching at 400 level and ridiculously hard. She teaches like this is the only class you are taking. Her tests are insane. It doesn't matter if you get the answer right or wrong but you have to explain it to her specifications. Will NEVER take from her again. To bad, I used to love Biology.
I Love Dr.Jen! True, the class is hard, but it is a major's level class, you can't expect to be spoon-fed. Dr.Jen has high expectations but is very willing to work with her students and wants you to exceed. She loves teaching biology and makes learning it fun! I like biology so much more than I did going into the class and feel like I gained a lot.
Extremely difficult to get through her class. She knows biology well but unfortunately doesn't translate it to her students and expects them to know with same enthusiasm as her. RIDICULOUS, do not sign up, drop/switch to Coleman if you already have!
The class is interesting but the level of work is terrible. She acts like this is your only class. I will never take one on her classes again. Beware!
I took the "online" BIO 102 class that requires a one day a week 3 hour lab. This teacher is terrible, acts like it is the only class you have and is worth 15 credits, it is a 4 credit class. Online assignments due almost every day and at weird times, plus weekly quizzes and discussions. Term-long project was way too hard and long. Never take her.
DO NOT TAKE! This lady expects you to commit 17 hours a week to her class, It says right in the syllabus. She seems to pride herself on the fact that she is smarter than her students. If you do take her, you should constantly check what she grades because she just randomly marks things wrong.
Great teacher who loves to teach. very enthusiastic about her subject and helping you to understand the concepts. Took the online section with lab once as week. If you do the worksheets that she doesn't collect or grade you'll have great materials to study from.
I am an A student and studied the STATED 20 hours a week for this class and got a B. If you are thinking of taking her for an online class because it will work with your schedule, don't. Seems proud that many people will drop her class. 3 field trips including group volunteer project. Weekly quizzes, some form of homework EVERY DAY. RIDICULOUS.
I took this class online with a campus lab. There was WAY to many assignments. The quizzes and test are only open odd hours and often only one day making it hard for anyone with a job to complete without taking the tests at 1 AM in the morning. Busy work due almost daily, group project horrible, exams proctored and written poorly. Do not take!!!
Very hard! Way too many tests. Unrealistic expectations! Take General Science instead.
Doctor Jen is a good teacher. Everyone who is saying bad things about her is fairly bias. Most likely because of lack of effort in her class. Some things are true. Her class IS hard. Don't take it unless you want a challenge. She has high expectations, but so will your employers.I think she is attractive if that matters at all: heavier Sabrina Lloyd
Her lectures are at a seventh grade level but her tests are not. She also poses very vague essay questions making it difficult to determine the desired answer. She's helpful but a lot of individual effort is required to do well at all.
Took this class online with an on campus lab, taught by a different teacher. I don't think they communicated at all as the lab and lecture never had ANY connection at all! Online class was set up confusing and hard to access stuff (yes, I have taken online classes before and I am an A student who works hard). Also makes you come to campus for tests
What these people are saying is true. This class is totally exhausting. quiz/exams vague!! Due dates: I had a quiz on an exam day! On 13hr field trip, I had to take another quiz due the next morning! These are not easy quizes. Tough class. It's like 2 classes in one! today, I had questions on my quiz that we didn't even cover yet!
I read the reviews, I wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt, but... Lets start with the good, she is fairly organized and a nice person. Now, the truth. Be prepared to give up your life for this class. Assignments are insane, not always clear, and she is not always that helpful. Don't debate or question her as apparently she knows it all.
You can take a lot of the other science professors and get a good grade, but if you want to learn Dr Jenn is awesome. Her expectations are way high though for a 100 level class and she expects a enormous amounts of information for written essay questions. There is no way to gauge what the exams will cover because she never teaches the same lecture.
This teacher was so difficult and would not allow me to make up a lab when I had strepp throat.. The class is extremely challenging and she wont give you the answer, only a riddle on looking in the book over and over again. Way too much homework, acted like this was the only class that was being taken
Yes, this class was HARD. But, you will learn SO much! It requires a ton of time and effort. She is TOUGH! She is also clear, dedicated, and brilliant. If you are interested in Biology, I highly recommend her. She's an outstanding teacher! A great teacher doesn't mean an "easy" teacher you guys!
Dr. Jen is a great teacher. She wants her students to succeed. She is very tough, but she teaches at a community college and what students don't realize is that the same level class would be harder at a 4 yr university. She encourages office hrs. If she knows the class doesn't understand a concept, she will find a better way of teaching it. Loveher
Worst class ever. Grading is ridiculous, expect to ruin your GPA with this class.
Dr. Jenn is an excellent instructor. Yes, her class is hard, but she does her best to insure clarity, and encourages students to stop by during her office hours. Be prepared to commit time to studying every day. Its worth it. I took her class and got a low C, because I didn't study. I retook her class and earned an 88% B, because I worked for it.
Long story short, its a hard class. If you expect this to be a class that you can breeze through and not study much, then you will fail... hard. If you actually feel like applying yourself then it is a great class, and you will learn. If you can put forth the effort I would highly recommend her.
I am an A student, but being sick twice in the term with the course load was difficult. If this is your only "hard" class, you can definitely do it. Be prepared to give detailed essays for exams, even though she teaches at a 7th grade level. Ratio of teaching level to difficulty level was inconsistent. Nice lady, hard class.
Dr. Jenn is awesome at explaining concepts in a way that you can understand. It is a very hard class but with her online pre-recorded lectures you can always listen/watch the lecture before class (or after if you have to miss) and actually understand what she is talking about. She is passionate about this subject and it shows!! Great teacher!!
Dr. Jenn is a really good teacher! She does a really good job of explaining the different concepts. However, you CANNOT miss lectures or labs because it will kill your grade. The class is really hard so you must be 100% dedicated. Good luck!!
She knows the topics but doesn't teach them. The entire class is based off of "Hybrid" quizzes online. you have to do work for her biology class 5 days a week. All the notes were supposedly in lecture. Never used the textbook. We used her abbreviations of the book "notes" which were confusing, and if you didn't get her notes.the book wouldn't help
she only taught the lecture section of the class so the lab instructor was a lot easier to understand. Dr. Jenn said everything came from her notes yet you couldn't decipher her notes. i tried rewriting it in my own words and still didn't understand. she is an unfair & harsh grader. if you want to pass take a different instructor. JUST SAYIN....
Teacher is completely unhelpful and does not relate her quiz or test questions to her lecture as she repeatedly states, never uses the book, told me not to read it, gives lectures that do not give you the time to understand the material and at the rate she goes even write it all down, gives a lab a week that you can't finish in class.
I'll make this short and sweet. Jennifer 1.) expects you to write papers for her essay questions on her exams and if your wrong about one thing the whole question is marked wrong 2.) CRAZY amount of HWquizzes 3.) teaches by writing vocab on board with pictures (middle school level) 4.) no make ups for anything Don't skip or you will FAIL
She funny and such a sweet person! I would definitely take her again!
I love how upbeat she is. I like the class, it is a hard class but she explains everything. She gives you plenty of study helps and is willing to meet with you outside of class time. Very clear on what is on the test and what you need to do to get a good grade. She is tough but fair.
Tough tests, you take a lot of notes. She expects a lot.
Definitely a tough teacher; she expects a lot from her students and sometimes builds off of things she assumes you know. However, the way she governs her class is very creative, and she genuinely wants her students to do well, which is why she challenges you. She is very knowledgeable and more than willing to help you understand a concept if asked.
She assigns too much work in my opinion. The lecture information is through but the lab ad lecture quizzes are only available for 24hrs at a time each week and are on days that don't fall into the class schedule well.
She is a good teacher but weeds out the weak. There is lots of homework and is online. You only have 24 hours to access the homework and can't see results to study with after submitted. Her tests are a pretty difficult and her classes are tough over all. No leeway to mess up once.
Make sure you arent taking any hard class when taking this class. She is overall an extremely hard grader and expects you to know a lot more than she teaches. She says tests lecture based but you will need to do a lot of textbook and outside reading. Has too much stuff planned for a short amount of time and expects too much of students.
This series is a lot of work especially combined with the Chem 221 series, but it's possible to complete. Dr. Jen makes you work for it and her lectures include almost all of the information that you need for the test. The lectures may seem long but she makes them fun. I would do it all over again and remember to ask questions as those are key.
Don't take this unless microbiology is your whole life, or dedicated with ample time to study. Take in light term class load. Tests hold massive weight. She eagerly helps during labs, and outside of class. Awkward due dates for online assignments. An energetic, dedicated, sharp, personable, professional educator. Complete immersion required.
Assigns way too much to learn in a very short amount of time, lots of scheduling outside of class with others due to the amount of group projects. Very tough to please especially on tests. The labs are basically a scramble to get everything done and you don't get to actually see and experience what you are looking at.
Mrs. Schramm is upbeat and forgiving, but if you are not good at scientific writing GET OUT NOW. Every quiz and exam that is worth something to your grade has at least three essay questions and they are graded HARD. Her excuse is that you will learn what she expects as the term goes on, but as I learned too late, I won't be taking her class again.
Dr Jen is an extremely smart professor and is willing to explain anything for her students. Attendance is mandatory and there is a group project that is a huge pain. Her tests are difficult and you are not allowed any notes, but if you study well and go to every lecture you will do great.
Very tough grader, unreal expectations, unclear instructional style, doesn't teach from the book, group project is difficult, didn't learn much about biology, but I can write a scientific paper.
I would refrain from taking her class if you are Biology major. I learned more in a 101 classroom than I did in her class, but I can write a scientific paper. I agree with the comments below that this class is for more pre-med students. The tests are basically essay questions, that you generally are not discussed in class. BEWARE for a lower GRADE.
If I could, I would give her a 0 score. If you can, avoid this awful teacher. Unrealistically high expectation, doesn't provide the tools needed to achieve it. Meeting w/her and extra study does no good. She tries to trick you on tests. Doesn't believe in 100% scores. Should be a 6 credits course w/how hard and the amount of work she assigns.
Dr. Jen has her Phd in Biology and is very knowledgeable about the subject. Tries her best to make the class fun and is very into. Tests are decently hard, but put in the work and you'll do fine. Only real con about this class with her is the amount of papers written thorough the year is a lot.
Super critical grader, and has unrealistically high expectations, but doesn't give you the tools to achieve that expectation. How she grades depends upon her mood and if you're friends with her or not. Tries to trick students on tests and homework. Don't plan on getting an A in this class, no matter how hard you try. Also, there's a large group pro
Dr. Jenn is awesome and gives helpful feedback. This is a class you need to give lots of time and energy! Do not skip lectures or labs. She can be a harsh grader but it's because she wants to prep you for a uni and wants you to learn the content. If you're good at communicating and asking q's, you should do okay
Dr. Jen is a fantastic teacher, She makes sure to explain all concepts thoroughly with the help of videos and diagrams. A lot of students get scared of her tough grading and requirements but if you attend class regularly and ask questions you will be fine. She is very educated and only wants to prepare students for what is about to come.
Terrible class and professor. She acts like her class is your only class and assigns way too much homework and quizzes with 24 hour windows to complete. The tests are impossible even if you are a good test taker. The lab quizzes are impossible to do well on too. Labs are extremely boring and long. Lectures are alright but are not useful.
You'll want to avoid her if at all possible. She has unrealistically high expectations for an introductory Biology course, and she presents the material in manner that makes it seem more difficult than necessary to understand. There is a group project worth a large part of your grade, as well as multiple tests (no notes allowed), no extra credit.
When asked a question she will belittle you. She is standoffish. She has a lot of pride and will constantly remind you of her title. She can not be reasoned with. It feels as if she is trying to keep us all from succeeding. If you want high quality teaching then I recommend going to another college for your biology.
Hard class. Great teacher
I took Jennifer's class the term prior to the pandemic, so I'm not sure if things have changed. There are group projects, considerable amounts of homework, and really tough exams. She's a tough grader, but an excellent professor. I'm a year away from graduating with a degree in BMB, and her lectures were the best I've had at any university.
Not a good teacher.
Teaching style is very overwhelming. Treats class like it is the highest priority out of the rest of your classes. No accommodation for busy students (test and quiz availability). More than 5 things due in a week. Recorded lectures rather than lecture in zoom class (good luck asking questions). Getting an A is way too hard.
I do not recommend this professor. With this class being an entry biology course, she acts as if we are already experts and offers little to no help. She is a very tedious grader and leaves nasty comments on your grade. Do not take her.
CONS: Lecture style disconnected from testing style. Seems very concerned with students trying to cheat their way through her class. VERY homework intensive(6-8 assignments due each week). Labs were extensive and rushed. Not helpful to struggling students. PROS: Draws good lecture diagrams. Smart in respective field. Provides verbal reassurance.
pretty tough class
Dr Schram doesn't like teaching and it is quite obvious. Many students as well as myself have had to correct her on lectures, in-class lectures, and labs. Labs are a nightmare, very disorganized, & always go over on time. I'm not "claiming she shows favoritism" but you get the hint. Grading is harsh if you show any distaste for any of it or her.
WORST INSTRUCTOR OUT OF MY COLLEGE EXPERIENCE. Picks and chooses who will succeed. Teaching is unclear and confusing. Wants you to guess, wont tell you the right answer and to keep trying then calls you out in front of class highlighting what you did wrong. Into level class but grades/ expects you to be a scientist and know everything.
If this class is not required do not take! There are better instructors then "Dr. Jen". And yes, she will remind you of her title. Grades harsh for intro level. Concept checks (tests) feel like a prison lock down. She makes you use her chrome book that has a lock down browser b/c she's convinced everyone cheats. She must have control issues.
Yes, she gives a lot of homework. However, I found that a lot of these assignments were closely related to the test material, and helped my understanding of the material a lot. Some were ungraded/worth a low percentage of your grade, and Jen still put a lot of effort into giving good feedback. The tests were also easier than the homework. 10/10.
Excessive assignments every week (5+). Multiple group assignments and group lab work EVERY week. Group final project as well. Quiz questions are not straightforward and often no right answer for essay questions. There are better ways to make biology engaging without cramming assignments down students throats. Disappointed. Good feedback though.
I've genuinely never found a class so difficult. I am not a huge science person so this probably didn't help my case. Jenn is one of few professors I haven't meshed well with at chemeketa. She didn't really teach much?? And she isn't the best at emailing students back. I spent about 10-12 hours a week on this class and still only got a B.
Hated: The tough grading, the useless group grading, and the change of due dates because of excess hw made it hard to track. Appreciated: hw was always useful, learned a lot, feel more prepared and confident that I could succeed in a higher-level science class, the structure of the class, the videos, lectures, and activities. -but A LOT OF EFFORT!
Cons:lots of assignments due on random dates, tough group projects, skipping class?grade will suffer. if you don't watch outside of class lecture?grade will suffer. pros: no midterms, instead easier multi-unit exams. final is basically essay questions that arent too bad.quizzes aren't that hard, good at explaining concepts. can get by w/o textbook
Dr. Jenn is wonderful! She genuinely cares about her students and unlike what others on here have said, I did not find that she showed favoritism to anyone throughout the year.. she really seems to enjoy what she does. Her online lectures are great, and it's more helpful if you watch those before going to in-person lecture. Time management is KEY!!
As a teacher, I would say she's good because you're forced to learn to do well in class. She indeed shows favoritism because it's painfully obvious. She shows more concern for certain students or consistently puts students into the light, but at least no favoritism is applied in grades. She can also be passive-aggressive with her comments.
Overall I got used to her teaching, lectures cover enough. WAY too much group work, peer reviewing ends up useless bc due dates are so crammed together. Arbitrarily takes off points, found it way too hard to get full points yet somehow certain people would get extra points on everything? She truly thinks you need to be a master to get an A.
Had our class take a concept check and a final both on the same day, was late multiple times to the point where people went home, had a lot of group activities and busy work that was not for a grade, and there is a huge project group project. Overall avoid at all costs, you truly need to be an expert in biology to do well in this course.
