Appears to be a first year teacher, since she can't seem to get anything right. She screws up the examples in class, wastes time, and I can't understand a word coming out of her mouth. UNCLEAR. The book is better.
Half of one lecture was devoted to handing back homeworks, ie calling out every individual's name. Unclear lectures, and examples. Basically learned the subject matter from the book. I would recommend a different teacher.
Oh man, she's definitely not the worst teacher I have ever had, but I'd say she is definitely down there. All she does is reiterate everything that was in the text book. She also makes a lot of mistakes, some that are major, in her lectures. I advise you try your chances on another math teacher!
I think she is the mosehorrible math prof I have ever had. She constantly makes mistakes on the board during lectures. The pop quizes are the only reason to ever come to class. You time is much better spent at home, with the book - you'll learn alot more. Or you could just find another prof!
Unclear and confusing during lecture. Definetly not the worst, but bad. Often hard to follow during lecture, and she does make many mistakes. Kind of arrogant at times; she gets easily stressed out. Midterm wasn't too bad, though she does not offer any practice midterms or review sessions.
not clear lecture at all, pretty much same from the text, i would recommand u read the text over again. no practice test before midterms, maybe it's cuz it's just her 1st year teaching. if u really want to learn vectors well, i would say go find a better prof.
While she makes some mistakes in her examples, she does a good job of explaining the concepts and theorems. Her midterm was a fair one. I advise you review the sections before lecture.
unclear during lectures, makes errors on board then says "i made a miscalculation, you'll have to go back and find it." writes proofs on the board when i can easily look in the book for those. leaves mic on when she goes to bathroom...every day i sit in lecture, i die a little more inside
AWFUL lecturer. She makes so many mistakes that it is extremely difficult to follow along. I tried to confront her about a mistake and she totally just came back with a verbal attack towards me. Why would anyone want a teacher that will degrade a student? She must have some mad insercurities
She was the worst math professor I've had yet. All she ever did was prove theorems right out of the book. Also in her office hours when asked to help with homework problems, she couldn't do them. If you have her try and switch out.
The one good rating you can disreguard because the prof must have written it. She is the most absent minded prof I have ever had. If you ever have Dugaw before her she makes dugaw look like Kouba (who in my mind is the best prof on campus)
Schultens needs time to improve as a lecturer. It appears that she is new at this. She was unprepared for lecture, sometimes revising the statement of theorems as she went. Very inefficient lecturer, cut many sections that we were supposed to cover. At least she speaks english.
She would make so many mistakes that it would make me wonder how she ever got her pHD. Last day of class she spent the entire time proving Stoke's Theorem, but then about 10 minutes before class ended, realized she had COPIED her notes wrong. This happens ever day. DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER.
she must know the subject to have gotten her degree, so i dont doubt shes a smart woman, but the ability to teach is another thing entirely that a degree doesnt guarantee you can do. she covered the material, but failed to "teach" it. if she was an option for me again, i would pass.
She has changed guys. Very sophisticated lectures. Very clear, goes over what you need to know when. The most useful lectures in any math class I've ever had. Book is worthless when it comes to Stokes and Green. She was clear and to the point. Very pleased with the class. And I dont enjoy math.
not a bad teacher. Tests were very very similar to practice tests. Didnt make many mistakes in my class. goes at a good pace and clear in teaching. i think shes a good teacher
Shes a smart woman, but not that great at teaching, She is readily available at her office hours. But overall i did not like this teacher. She seemed to just repeat herself over and over again without really getting to a point. Definitely needs work. Mditerm and final were okay overall.
I really enjoyed this class. Before taking the class I heard many people tell me that she couldnt teach. She did a couple of mistakes in the beginning, but she improved alot. I never opened the book and I still remember ALL the theorems. The midterm and final were straight forward.
Class was very straight forward, although it became somewhat confusing near the end of the term. Schultens was a mediocre lecturer. She made multiple mistakes, yet tried to be as clear as possible. Her tests are a good test of your knowledge on the subject.
She had a bad quarter. But she did learn from it! Really helpful in office hours!!!!
Very nice

Awesome professor! She knows her math and can explain it to students who are seeing the material for the first time.
Nice person, means well, but she makes a LOT of mistakes during every lecture. She is definitely fair on tests: Instead of doing the whole algebra part of integrals, she just tests to make sure we can set the integrals up. This way, we don't lose points on stupid algebraic mistakes. She's s,art, but just needs to work on not making so many mistakes
Overall I REALLY enjoyed this class. She presents the material very clearly especially for people who have handled the material for the first time. If you have a chance to take her for adv. calc, go for it!
One of the worser professors I have ever come across. Expect this math professor to make mistakes in EVERY of her lectures.
A bit confusing in class she does lots of proofs that are already in the book. The material is easy so this class is not to bad. She has fair tests that actually test what she taught.
She does a good job explaining the stuff. She makes a few algebraic mistakes once in a while but she is not as bad as some people say she is. Her tests are fair (especially since u can use a notecard).
Not bad, but makes way too many mistakes on the board. Not the worse professor in the Math Department, but not the best either. She can go either way with students.
Don't take her for math 21D! She is a horrible lecturer, and very disorganized!! Her final Exam is extremely difficult ! Beware!!
This teacher makes Math 21B look like a joke. It is SO EASY to get an A, and you can you fat note cards on her exams. Of course, she makes mistakes, but not as bad as people say she is for 21B. It's probably because Math 21B is supposedly a very easy class. But yeah, very easy
Her lectures are boring but so are most lectures for math classes. Her practice exams were very similar to the actual exam, we were allowed note cards as stated below, and yes she makes mistakes, but who doesn't make mistakes? It's math. She's knows her stuff and she's nice. I'd recommend her.
Please do not take Schultens as a math prof. By far one of the worst professors at Davis. She cannot teach and is really, really confusing. Steer far away as possible.
how did she become a teacher?? i just hope her tests are easy.. thats the only way to make up for her horrible teaching
A self taught class. Know how to do the practice exams. She confuses herself a little while lecturing and makes errors on the board. But, her tests are easy, so you can't really complain too much
She changed her class from previous reviews--she no longer allows notes to be used on her tests, or anything else that could make this class less hellish. We learn pointless material I wont use again, and the final was very hard. She said she was not going to curve the class, but since she is so awful at teaching she had no choice. Dont take her!
Horrible teacher. Very poor communication skills, just simply isn't good at teaching math. However if you put in a little bit of work, or are decent at math, she's an easy professor.
One of the worst teachers I have had at Davis. Very monotonous voice, is very unclear and confusing. Treats students like children, one time she stopped the class because a phone went off in class, and she tried to find out whose phone it was. Pretty ridiculous.
Class is easy. Midterms and Final closely resemble practice midterm/finals. Boring lecture, all she does is go over examples which usually doesn't help when doing homework. Her microphone is really annoying, no one says anything though. Wonder if she even knows.
pretty boring lecture and basically useless to attend. her tests are designed really poorly, with only 5 problems per test (and one is a series of true/false solely designed to trick you). the problem with these tests is that if you dont know one trig formula, you lose all the points on the problem, and nearly a fifth of the exam.
Probably the worst math professors i have EVER had. Her voice is very boring and so are her lectures. She doesn't even seem interested in what she is teaching. The real exams are basically the same as the practice exams. 3 midterms and a final, nothing else counts. I don't recommend taking her, i paid the price for not listening to others...
Isn't it funny how math professors at Davis seem to be rated low in lower-division and higher in upper? Dr. Schultens is an excellent professor! She CARES if you understand the material and is clear. She assigns little homework; just enough to get you to understand the material - no mindless repetition. Her exams are extremely fair. Recommended!
Professor Schultens is a fantastic professor! She has some errors in her notes, but it's okay. If you study hard, you should be able to catch those mistakes of hers. Her midterms/final are quite easy They are VERY similar to the practice midterms/finals. You must do the practice tests if you want an A, unless you're naturally smart. RECOMMEND!!!
I really liked her. Webwork can be extremely frustrating, but the tests are pretty easy if you've gone to all the lectures and done the webwork. I just wish she would turn her mic up, it's difficult to hear her if you sit in the back. Otherwise she's a great teacher.
If you've taken AP Calc BC in high school, learned concepts and did well, this class is EASY. Never went to any lecture after the first week, still got an A. She's an okay professor, tried to explain concepts when I actually showed up to class. Made some minor mistakes in explanations. Exams VERY similar to sample ones. Overall, an easy class.
Don't buy the Textbook, biggest ripoff. All homework is thru online WebWork, textbook NEVER used. Tests are easy, homework is hard. Teacher easy to understand, lectures good but not the BEST LECTURES EVER.
Be sure to know ALL your trig functions and their derivatives and antiderivatives. She uses them a lot, especially on the exams, so even if you know the concepts behind the lectures, if you don't have a solid grasp on the trig functions, you'll have a hard time in this class.
She's an awful teacher. My high school calc teacher was better
Not good at teaching the material that actually appears on the homework. You think you understand the math in class, but the homework is completely different. The TAs are not helpful and expect you to know how to do everything. However, tests are ok and similar to practice tests. However, she does throw some tricks in there sometimes. Good luck
Tests are basically practice exams with some numbers changed. Sometimes the numbers aren't even changed. Homework is slightly harder, but you have the whole internet at your disposal. After all, the tests are easy so you don't need to practice from the homework.
I really liked her! Very straightforward, organized style of teaching/testing, relieves a lot of stress. If you study the material/do the homework, you will do well in her class. Only complaint: limited conceptual explanation of the material--often for times' sake, concepts were presented without much intuition; she'd refer us to the text for proof
She confuses herself when she is working out problems on the board. It makes it hard to pay attention and she doesn't explain what the things we are learning actually mean to real life application. Stay away if you can. Her tests were easy (EXCEPT FOR THE FINAL WHICH IS WORTH 40%)
This professor was a walk in the park. Simply look over the sample midterm and finals she puts out, do the suggested problems to better understand the material and you should be fine.
3 tests, one final. The 1st test is easy, the rest get harder each time, but she drops one test. Online hw is the worst. Go to class, get a tutor, and read the book to do well. I got a C. Take a different teacher because you won't be prepared for the next level math course. Don't recommend.
Jennifer Schultens is an awful lecturer. I rarely went to lecture, and when I did, I regretted the decision as I watched in horror as she fuddled through mindless example problems. Unless you really need your hand held, stay home, read the book, and work through the webworks. Her tests are so easy that there's no curve. Easy A if you work solo
Easy midterms!!! All three are super easy, same level of easiness. Final is much harder but still are not that horrible!! Usually no curve and so watch out!!
Her lectures are very important and fast. She was way ahead of all the other teachers we went father in the book even though she dedicated a class period before each of the three midterms to have a TA review. One of the three midterms was dropped. She curved at the end (not much). The final was ridiculously hard. Go to discussion and do theHW!
This professor was all over the place with her lectures and had no idea what she was doing. Lectures were here just getting confused about what she was teaching and saying oh the course is "in progress" so she didn't quite have a plan.
She told us to "Mind our Manner" in the first class. That explains all. I was too afraid of her that I don't go to class.
Very confused! She is teaching and convincing herself during lecture. You should study all by yourself after class. Avoid her if you can.
Never know what she is talking about, because she is just convincing herself in the lecture. Making mistakes again and again, always corrected by students, she just tells you how to solve the problem in calculus, which is even not better than what the book teaches us. Grade very harsh and do not curve!!
She is the worst teacher and even the worse human i have ever met. Lectures are confused, and she kept making mistakes in lectures. No help from office hour. She was rude to students who go to her office. Midterms are very easy actually, but nobody knows her grading policy. She just give random grades. U could get an C even if u are all correct.
She's not very good at explaining things. She tends to ramble to herself while trying to describe theorems. Luckily, her midterms and final were extremely easy. The questions were either straight off the notes, book problems, or practice tests. There was a typo on a midterm that screwed a lot of people over. Easy A, but you'll have to read the book
Her explanations of the material were pretty clear, but she made a lot of mistakes on the problems she did in class so I relied mostly on the book to figure out how to stuff. The midterms and the final were very straightforward. She can come off as intimidating in person but was always willing to help when I asked.
She was a tough grader with no curve. Also, she seems to have a "let them eat cake" attitude when it comes to her students. In other words, she doesn't care for her students. Her lectures are nearly verbatim from the textbook, but she makes even the most simple problems hard to understand. She also makes a lot of mistakes in lectures.
She made a lot of mistakes during lecture and sometimes seemed scatter-brained. However, the exams were EASY and problems came straight from lecture examples or textbook. Seriously, if you did all the problems from each section and understood the theory questions, the exams were a cake-walk. Her final was the easiest final in math I've ever taken.
She not only confused her students but also confused herself. No one knows what she was talking about. Always made mistakes. She even gave us a incorrect problem in midterm.
She makes a lot of mistakes in lectures, but hey, she's human! She's a nice woman overall, but the material covered in MAT 21D is hard and her tests are even harder! Very ambiguous questions and that she did not clarify during lecture. I would not take her again. It's better to read the textbook yourself.
One of the best math classes ive taken
Pre-written notes that she blows through every lecture. Half the time she's half mumbling about some concept that clearly isn't getting across to any of the students. Would not recommend. Get a different professor if you can.
Do not take at any cost. Heed all of the other students' warnings, and do not take her. I ignored these warnings, took her, suffered a lot. Mumbles in class, lectures unclear, weird grading criteria, extremely condescending and rude, always confused, the list goes on and on. Horrible experience.
Lectures are confusing because she rarely talks about the intuition behind each theorem. Yet, webwork is easy and the TA's go over problems in discussion. Tests are somewhat easy if you do the practice exams. Have to learn a lot on your own in order to do good in the class. Overall, the experience is not too bad.
LOOK. This lady is the easiest you are going to get for 21D. Her exam problems are sometimes literally straight from the book and lectures. Webwork is a peice of cake if you're not lazy. Go to class, take notes, go over EVERY problem in the text for each section, and you will do fine in this class.
Class was super chill. Not the greatest teacher, but it's not a class you need to worry about much. If you've taken ecs 20, this should be mostly review in terms of concepts. If you stay on top of everything (doesn't require much time), you'll do well.
Schultens is one of the most amazing professors at Davis. She really cares about her students and she wants you to learn. She'll take the time out to help you if you are struggling, all you have to do is make an effort to try in the class.
Schultens is a weird lady. Her lectures often ramble as she gets lost in her own thought process. That said, this is an easy class. Webworks are worth 20% and you can look up those answers if you have to. Midterms are EXACTLY like the practice tests, and she uploads her entire lecture notes to smartsite.
Professor Schultes is a nice lady; lectures does not cover that many material, but is definitely interesting if you like geometry. Overall a solid class, practice exams are provided. Helpful office hours! Only annoying thing are the weekly quizzes. Recommended
She gets a bad rep but she is very straight forward. First time I have actually understood the content (in a math class) at Davis.
Two Midterms and one final. All tests had samples provided, and she even told us what types of questions she would put on the real exams. Midterms were easy, Final was a bit harder. She moves a bit too fast in lecture. Overall, she was an easy calc professor.
A little difficult to understand if you're not sitting in the front, but otherwise pretty straightforward when it comes to material. Posted lecture notes online. Provides a study guide of the exact type of questions for exams and practice exams are very similar to the actual exam. 21D is a really tough class, she makes it as simple as possible.
Obviously passionate about math, but not a very good lecturer, often gets lost on tangents in class and isn't good at explaining concepts. Take your questions to your TA. She made our second midterm easier b/c a lot of people didn't do so well on the 1st. Fair and not unkind.
Difficult class. Professor explains well, at a very deep level. Really knows her stuff.
Webwork(online hw) was annoying, didn't really help me for the midterms. She mumbles in class and notes can get messy. I skipped multiple lectures but watched khan academy to catch up. If you can do the practice midterms with no help, you'll be alright. Would recommend her bc she's probably the easiest teacher for 21D even though her class is meh
The professor speaks in paragraphs. This can be difficult for the functionally illiterate. So beware.
the midterm is easy! And she always have a clearly thinking in class
Definitely the best MAT21A professor from what I can tell between me and my friends! Homework is mandatory, but you get infinite tries to get it right and the midterms are exactly just like the practice. Attendance is not mandatory and she emails you the notes after class anyway.
She has a habit of going off on tangents whenever she tries to make broad statements- she starts mumbling about specific situations when X does/doesn't work. She tries to explain things by using her hands instead of just drawing it. Open to questions in lecture. HW is for credit. 2 midterms. EXCELLENT communication among TAs. Posts lectures after.
Professor Schultens gives midterms that exactly follows her sample midterms, homework is for credit but has infinite tries, open to any questions, and posts lecture notes online. I recommend to also take the co-class for 21A if you haven't taken calc in high school and to also reinforce topics learned during lecture.
Weekly HW assignments. practice exams for all exams are exactly the same with different numbers. 2 midterms, 1 final. Posts lectures online. No office hours. Final was much more difficult than midterms. Easy homework. Discussion is helpful, but not mandatory. Basically a review of AP Calc AB.
Makes sample midterms/final similar to the actual exams. No curve at all but lectures are uploaded. With no prior calc knowledge, 21A is a difficult class. She lectures very quickly with barely enough time to write down the notes, skips tons of steps in arithmetic and assumes everyone can follow. A good prof if you already know the subject.
HW with infinite tries. Very easy midterms. The final is not hard at all. Very similar to the practice tests. If u took AP Cal, you will get an A without showing up to her lecture.
If you are good at math, don't chose this prof. She often makes mistakes on calculation and repeat same kind of question in class-- boring. But she post clear notes in canvas and practice exam is same as real exam.
The homework (you have infinite tries on homework) is hard but the midterms are easy. During lectures, she often mumbles her way through it and often makes mistakes and goes on tangents, but she also posts them online which are much easier to follow. Overall, a disorganized professor that is not clear during lectures, but she is nice and fair.
Makes lots of typos in her lecture slides posted on Canvas, there has never been a single lecture posted online without a mistake. Her midterms are just like her study guides which is fair game. If you took AP Calc BC then you should be fine, but she teaches more than the AP curriculum and some of her methods aren't as efficient.
She's very passionate about the subject but often overestimates the classes knowledge and passion and glazes over difficult concepts quickly. All lectures posted on canvas. Discussion section is much more helpful than going to lecture. Practice test given is really similar to the actual test. Overall, not amazing but straightforward and easy enough
Great professor! Really cares about students and reeeaaaly passionate about math. Exams are beyond easy. Probably the easiest A I got. (She did make quite a few mistakes in lecture notes, which could be confusing)
No curving!!!!!!! First math class I have taken that did not curve. All examples were easy, but the questions in the tests were extremely hard. The average of our final exam was C, but the professor did not even curve one percent. Good luck if you take her classes.
Great professor! The exams were not curved but was really easy.
She really enjoyed teaching our course. She frequently would point out ideas that we were going over in lecture that are covered very heavily in later courses, heavily suggesting that we should consider taking them. The homework using webwork worked well, and the TA's had obvious direction with their discussions(I attended multiple)
She made a lot of mistakes in the lectures, and even in the sample final. But as long as you study hard and do the homework, you can pass.
Makes a lot of mistakes during lecture and honestly the lecture is very confusing. Homework is very difficult and I needed to go to calc room for extra help. You will learn almost nothing unless you self study and teach yourself. But you don't need to learn for this class if you just memorize the practice midterms and final. They are the exact same
She is a really nice lady! Even though she makes some mistakes during lecures, her lectures are generally enjoyable. And her exams are super easy!!!
Easy class overall. Midterm was exactly the same as the study guide. Final was similar to the study guide but there were some surprises. Lecture notes are posted online so you can easily pass this class without attending lecture. Overall good prof.
The professor speaks slowly so that you can understand! Be sure to pay attention, every word matters!
Lecture goes over material more deeply than homework and exams. This professor teaches mathematics, not just doing homework problems. This is a class for students who are interested in learning math, not just passing a class.
She was very passionate about teaching and cared for her students. Her sample midterms/final were identical to the actual exams, so make sure to practice those. Her TA's graded the tests pretty hard which was annoying, but overall it was an easy course. It would be better if you had previous calculus knowledge since her lectures can be confusing.
One of my favorite classes! Really enjoyed her lectures and she prepares you well for the test. Take Schultens!!
As a student who has never taken a calculus course, I found Professor Schultens to be fantastic. She is responsive to questions and wants her students to succeed. Her sample final and midterms reflect the actual exams and while her homework can take awhile, you have unlimited tries. If you have taken calculus before, you'll be fine.
She seems like a nice lady, but is the worst prof I've had at Davis. She needs to be fired. She failed her own practice final and during the final review said "I don't know how to do this off the top of my head, but I expect you to know how to do it." She can't do math, but is a calc professor. Don't take her if you expect to learn calc. Quiz heavy
Took this class back in Fall 2018, and forgot to rate her. Overall, a very nice but disorganized professor. I remember quite a few mistakes were made during lecture. The exams were overall fair. The final was a bit difficult but nothing impossible. The homeworks were good, but typing your answers into webwork can be annoying. Overall, an okay prof
Taught using a Powerpoint that was riddled with errors. Skipped steps and assumed we knew how to do it. Self taught myself using Paul Online Math Notes. Also gave out contradicting information and never updated announcements with said new information (said quiz was 30 min, was actually 40). Find a good TA and stick with them if you want to do well
Lots of my firends were reported to SJA for having potential cheating without any solid evidence by the prof. I think this is more or less unacceptable. The PPT is not in high quality. I have never watch any of her lecture/Discussion. So, this A has no relation with her teaching. But the homework and test were easy for who taken AP Cal BC with 5/5
I took this class in spring quarter and honestly regret it the lectures are not the same as the quizzes and she would get confused on her own problems in OH students would seek other ways of learning and flagged us for not following rules when we didnt even learn anything and did the problem in another way. Dont take this class.
Run While you Can!!! First time writing a review on here. Unfortunately, its not for a good reason. Lectures are worthless and it will not match any content with exams. Also, you will GET REPORTED to OSSJA if you solve something that doesnt match the mehod(s) you were taught. Again, save yourself this hassle. Worst decision Ive made class wise.
nope nope nope. not a very good lecturer, unavailable outside of class, gets confused by her own questions during OH. Tough grader but doesnt explain how to properly solve the question. I ended up having to teach myself. Limited tries on homework. Flagged half the class for cheating cause they did a different simplification for u sub.
She didn't give 1 live lecture the entire quarter, and it seemed like all the videos used were recycled. They were boring and MUCH easier than the weekly homework which had limited attempts per problem. Most students resorted to learning on their own but were flagged for "cheating" on our final exam for using a different method than the prof.
The classes are easy, and the professor is great. We had 5 quizzes, which means that we take 5 lectures off. The quizzes are very similar to homework problems and lecture examples.
The class itself is really easy. It's just MAT127 stuff but with complex numbers and everything works out nicely. Wasn't even slightly rigorous. I didn't show up after week one and basically didn't study at all, yet I still got a B. Short weekly HW, 5 quiz 1 dropped, and a final. Honestly it was just boring. Prof is fine, material is just a snooze.
Very hard to understand. PPTs are not clear. Loads of homework. Way too many quizzes which are to be attempted without a calculator.
Not as bad as people say. 50% and up in the class is passing, and she's a nice person outside of class, willing to talk about anything. Topics can get confusing, use the calc room. As long as you stay on top of the work, you'll pass. Plus, the tests are always close to the practice exams.
The first practice midterm was just like the exam and I did well but the rest felt like wildcards. I honestly feel like I could have tried harder but it was difficult to keep up with all the information and homework. Even so, the prof is nice and is open to questions in lectures although she does not have office hours.
She's okay, not as bad as previous reviews say. Her lectures are not very good, but she is very fair in terms of workload and test grading. A 50% is required to pass the class.
This class has five quizzes and one final exam, and the questions are not that difficult.
Lectures are fairly straightforward and followed the chapters of the book pretty spot on. Class was graded on 6 total quizzes (4 normal and 2 final quizzes) which were primarily 2 or 3 questions. The quizzes themselves were extremely fair and designed to test the student, not fail them. Plenty of HW assigned to help study, but not collected.
