Greatest teaching assistant ever!
Jennifer is amazing! She will keep the material interesting and help you at all times! Take her if you get the opportunity.
she was very helpful....all you have to do is read your textbooks...
She was helpful, but then again the class was somewhat hard so we needed all the help we could get. She can be lenient but can sometimes use time in class to go on and on about things that have nothing to do with class and aren't really that interesting.
She is great, makes class fun and interesting. Very helpful and honest.
Why do they let someone like this teach.
Loved loved loved the way she taught this class! The material itself was uninteresting but she made it extremely fun to learn. She's great. Take her if you want to be amused lol
Professor Simmers was my professor for Sociology for Fall 2014 and honestly she was great. The tests didn't demand too much, just readings and lectures. Her lectures are basically stories from her life that she tries to intertwine with the concepts of the class; she can be funny and she appreciates student participation.
A crack up every class. Interesting lectures and talks alot about her personal life. Tests are short which makes them kinda hard. Fair amount of reading, the book is boring. Fun in class discussions. Overall a good professor.
Professor Simmers made the class interesting. She's hilarious and the lecture is never boring! There's a short test every other week, but most of the questions are common sense. 5 tests, no projects or papers. HW is just "reading" the articles. Just skim the articles and you'll do fine on the tests.
Fall 2014 Simmers made me actually want to go to class to hear what she had to share and teach everyday. She taught the class using common life events which most people understand and can easily relate to and was funny doing so. The grade was solely based on readings which were fairly easy, and were discussed in section to make it even easier!
Most funny professor I've had. Loved her, wish I could have more classes with her as the professor.
She is a very laid back professor. Her lectures were always short because she would spend a lot of time telling stories that related to the slides. You have to know the main points of each reading in order to pass the test.
I went to almost no lectures and I got an A. Piece of cake. You have 5 test (we had 4 because our final was a flash mob). If you do the reading you get an A if you don't then good luck. Got the notes from a friend because you do need the notes too but only about 2 pages front and back worth of notes per test. She is super hilarious and really chill
Such a hilarious professor! I always looked forward to coming to her lectures because they made me happy and put me in a good mood! She connects her powerpoint lectures to her life, which makes it all the more interesting. Her lectures are both entertaining AND educational! But get ready to read and test like crazy. There's a test every other week.
Prof Simmers is so down to earth and just a funny professor. I enjoy her lectures, especially the way she makes the concepts relatable to real-life examples that makes it a lot more easy to understand. Her exams are usually not long, 30 questions. Straight to the point. No tricks. If attend lecture and study notes, easy A.
Simmers is a great professor. She has a lot of enthusiasm and passion, which really shines through so that the class is not dull and boring. The class is in general not too hard. There are assigned readings for the week that get excessive at times, but she goes over them. The tests are short and ask very general questions about the readings.
She's pretty funny most of the time but sometimes you get red from embarrassment for her. Yeah, it's a mixed bag. 5 tests, that's the whole class. She does not post slides, and her lectures aren't based on reading. So you have to go to class, AND do the reading. But her tests are easy if you have done both. Section is NOT mandatory. I never went.
Enjoyed this class because she was hilarious but also learned a lot. Readings were hard to decipher & take notes on, esp. since her midterms were only 25pts, questions are a little tricky & you don't always know exactly what she's looking for. Don't wait until week of midterm to start studying. She has random in-class assignments so go to class.
Dr. SImmers is very light hearted and Hilarious. She bring up tense issues, but makes everyone comfortable. You could say she doesn't care what anyone thinks of her and that translates into her down to earth and hilarious demeanor. Awesome Prof!!!
Simmers is a great professor, I really enjoyed her lectures although they aren't really mandatory. Class is made up of 5 tests based on readings posted on iLearn. If you actually read the articles, you'll be fine.
TAKE NOTES OF HER SLIDES and STUDY THOSE NOTES and you'll do fine, she makes her tests from her lectures. Very cool, down to earth & relatable. Doesn't care about attendance, but you'll miss out on a lot if you don't have good friends in the class to update you. Sit up front, smile at her, participate, make sure she knows & sees you (it'll help)
I've never had a professor like professor Simmers. She is very nice and very funny! It was so easy for her to lighten up the mood in the class when we are having a discussion about difficult topics that in general are very difficult to address. If you take her class you will always look forward to going to lecture.
I really enjoyed going to lecture. They were always fun and interesting. I honestly thought her class was pretty easy. There are 4 test that are usually taken every other week. Also, she gave us a chance to either do a final exam (30 questions just like her other tests) and a flash mob. I took the final and passed the class with an A. Plus no hw!
Dr. Simmers is awesome! She's hilarious and can definitely relate to all her students. She is very open and very funny professor. There are 5 exams worth 30 points each. However, you can do the flash mob to replace the final. The tests, despite what people say, are a little tricky so go to discussion. Easy class. Got a 96 percent. You can too. :)
Dr. Simmers is really funny and her lectures are really entertaining. To get an A in this class you just need to do the required readings and understand them. Also write down her notes word to word and memorize them for her tests. Also participate in discussion and you will for sure get an A. I would love to retake the class and the teacher.
We had 2 midterms and a final, 30pts each. Do the readings and you should be fine. Simmers is hilarious and a great speaker, but would sometimes go on extreme tangents for the entire class instead of teaching relevant material. Group, in-class assignments every Friday, so at least go to those.
Worst professor I've had. She does not teach the material that she tests us on. Do NOT take this class!
Very unorganized and frequently canceled class. We were surprised if she did show up to class, and often she would show up 15 mins late. Most of the time though she did not even teach us the material but then expected us to know it. The tests were difficult; often asked questions on there that she did not cover. I did not learn anything in class.
She's so funny and super easy. I enjoy her class every single time i show up. Test are easy if you study. A lot of readings. I only read for the first midterm... other than that, this class is super chill. I studied 2 days before the final and I did fine.
She's really blunt. Lecture can make people world weary (if they aren't already). It's a really easy class and Simmers gives thought-provoking lectures.
I took this class for a lower div and after taking this course I switched out of majoring in Soc. She made students feel uncomfortable in lectures with unnecessary things and was very disorganized. You're basically on your own trying to pass the class. Readings are 15-30 pages and are assigned 3 times a week so get ready to read if you want to pass
A lot of people find her hilarious but I found her inappropriate and funny a few times. Multiple lengthy readings every week to be discussed in section and to be tested on. But in lecture, Simmers often doesn't even show us more than two slides of the PPT because she is storytelling. She definitely makes us think about social matters/issues though.
She is the best professor I've ever had. Not a lot of work. Easy test if you follow her lecture notes.
SHES POPPIN. go to class. READ READ READ. go to office hours. and you'll be fine. I have never gotten anything lower than an A in ANY of her classes, and i've taken her nearly every quarter here at UCR. She's hilarious, and make you think, AND keeps the material relatable to social issues. Don't sKIP on simmers. She's the best prof at UCR.
Dr. Simmers is the type of professor you can tell cares for her students. She's very upfront in lecture about the matters discussed which helps a lot, I mean it's sociology of course it can be disturbing. Dr. Simmers covers all the material and allows us to review on it through her synthesis activities. She's honestly an inspiring professor.
Took this class fall of 2016 and wow! what an experience. Best Sociology teacher (in my opinion) at UCR! She makes sure her lectures are fun and educational so there's no reason not to go. She didn't require a textbook but she did give a list of readings that you had to complete every 2 weeks (Average 5-8 articles every 2 weeks for 10 weeks)
Class has 3 tests, first and second midterm and final. Tests are based on readings and lectures but most of the infon from lecture is common sense. If your TA is good and goes over the readings Easy A, if your TA does not go over them you will have to read to get a decent grade. I read 0 of the readings but because my TA covered them I got an A.
She was a really funny professor. Although attendance isn't mandatory I never missed lecture because her lectures were just so entertaining. I just skimmed through her readings most of the time and I got an A. Her readings can be lengthy but they count for the 2 midterms. We had no final. I am taking another one of her classes again and am excited.
professor simmers is honestly the most hilarious professor ever, she doesn't have a filter at all. a lot of people complained that we didn't actually learn anything but she made class really fun. my only issue that isn't really an issue is that i had a c for almost the whole class and got a c on the final but ended up with an a in the class.
She is really
She's real funny and makes lectures entertaining.
Funny professor. Do the readings, you will need to in order to get a high grade in the exams, her lectures are funny and informative if you really pay attention and indulge yourself in the class.
It is an eye-opening course, you learn a lot from the professor and she makes it understandable. There is a lot of reading but the TA's make them easier to understand.
EAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSY A. Simmers is really cool, no homework, but lots of readings for test. 10/10 reccomend if you want to pad you GPA. Dummy Eazy.
really funny and makes sociology001 a fun class to take, lots to reading, depending on whether it's mwf class or mw class there are synthesis which you need to participate in, lots of reading and participate in discussion, need to go to class to take notes or else need to ask others for it, need to do read and study to do well on midterm, no final
Great profesor and one of the most caring individuals I have ever met. Take her, you won't regret it.
Simmers is by far my favorite prof at UCR. She's the reason why I decided to major in sociology. Lectures are entertaining and interesting. This class is an easy A, just go to her lectures because she doesn't post powerpoints and do the readings. Tests are 20 questions.
Professor Simmers has been my favorite professor by far at UCR. She is hilarious, relatable and very genuine. She provides great anecdotes which allow us to better understand the information. Her test are super easy, they are based on the lectures and the readings. Most of the readings are pretty straight forward.
hilarious!!!!! best professor I've ever had. An easy class to pass, but get ready to read many articles.
Honestly, super funny
Professor Simmers is hands down my favorite professor at UCR so far. She's so funny, and her lectures are never boring. Her exams are fairly easy if you pay attention and read all the articles she assigns. She doesn't post her notes online so you actually have to attend class to get the material, but it's worth it.
I absolutely loved her lectures, they were always very entertaining and productive. The way she taught the material we had to learn was through stories that she had and they were always very funny. She knows exactly how to keep the class engaged.
Dr. Simmers is a charismatic and caring professor and mentor. I went to her freaking out about the next midterm and she calmed me down and reassured me. She gave the class free points on the midterm. 2 Midterms total and a 1 final all mult. choice. She has fun synthesis activities. Her lectures are engaging and interesting. She makes you talk.
Professor Simmers is a really good sociology professor, if listen and read you will pass with an A
Professor Simmers is very funny and her tests are pretty straightforward. They are straight from the notes, which you have to go to class to get. There are readings assigned that are on the exam as well so make sure to do those. She's pretty funny and I would recommend taking her class.
Prof Simmers is a very hilarious professor who brings up her own personal experiences and very easy to understand examples to help connect the real world to what we are learning in the course. Attendance is not mandatory but she does not post her notes online so its better to go to class. She really cares about her students and was a great teacher
There was never a time in this class where no one laughed. I found this class very enjoyable and enlightening. There is a lot of reading, but the class is very worth taking again.
Dr. Simmers is the best professor at UCR. She is hilarious and lectures are never boring. Be prepare to read but if you go to lecture and read the assigned reading you will pass. Test are not long and are not tricky. Definitely take her and the synthesis activities are super fun and easy.
Simmers was pretty cool. Her stories were entertaining and the class was interesting. The only thing that sucked were the readings :(. I totally failed one of the midterms but still ended with a B
Best professor I have ever had.
Simmers is one of the best professors you'll ever find. Her slides are clear but not posted online, she tells you the funniest stories to go along with the lesson and gives you an opportunity for "extra credit"; just pay attention to the guidelines. Tests are based of readings and lecture; 2 midterms and a final (both easy if you put in some work.)
Professor Simmers is the BEST professor at UCR. You do have to read many articles but if you read them and pay attention during her lectures you will pass. I did not read for the two midterms and I got a C's but the 13 points extra credit she gave out I ended with an A.
Simmers is hilarious. Her lectures can become invasive and personal but you'll get used to it. There's a lot of reading but I did probably half and got an A. She has weekly activities that you show up for and get credit. I would take her again if i could. I learned a lot from her notes. She really knows how to intrigue you and keep you interested.
She is so funny! There was never a dull moment in class. Make sure to get the book and READ because her exams are unpredictable and may include random things that you may not get if you dismissed the readings. Super approachable and very open about certain topics, so don't take things too seriously. Only had two exams and no Final, so study!
She doesn't upload her slides online.
Her lecture was so fun and she had great sense of humor !!!! you wont regret taking her class
Jennifer Simmers was an amazing professor who constantly kept students engaged. Lectures are not mandatory but you have to show up for the synthesis. Read book and just take notes on lectures and you will get an A. Discussion classes were pointless. First class where I actually wanted to attend the lectures.
Simmers is hilarious and her class is great. My class created a Google Doc to help study for exams, which was super helpful, and Simmers even reviewed it to make sure all the info was correct. Attend all the synthesis activities and discussion sections, they really help your grade. GO TO LECTURE! They're fun, and what she says may be on the tests!!
The professor cares about student's grade (she gives out extra credit which is synthesis activities). Her exams are pretty manageable (the last exam was reading comprehension but most of her exam are based on vocabularies and sociologists). I would say that missing some of her lectures is fine but she does show videos that will be on the exams.
This was a pretty easy class as long as you do the readings. Shes super chill and tells a lot of stories during lecture. I would def take her class again!
Not a hard class. Very interesting. Just read and attend lectures.
What an amazing professor. She is hilarious, caring, and just a joy to be around. There are a couple of in lecture assignments. Attend all of them, one is counted as extra credit. Exams are fair and straight to the point. She does not post slides so do not miss lecture. Exams are lecture heavy with a some questions on the reading. Do the readings!!
Literally the best Soc Professor at UCR. I wish that I could have taken more classes with her sooner. If you get the opportunity to take any of her classes, doesn't matter the subject, just take it. They are all amazing. It's nice having a professor that actually cares about the students and what they learn. 10/10.
Simmers never fails to make her classes fun and interesting. Make sure to do the readings otherwise you'll have a hard time with the exams. Uses real life examples to make the material that much more easy to grasp.
i don't understand why some of her exam are so hard its an intro level General education class. no one cares about it.
Even though I read the textbook and was so prepared, her exams were still difficult. She expects us to read, but the lectures do not help. She will tell stories on random things from her point of view, and it seems like she want us to share the same ideas with her. She is aggressive and not approachable. She always ignore my emails. Bad experience.
I wanted to take this class but was disappointed. Her lectures were personal stories that did not prepare us for the exams. Her lecture slides are just definitions. The lectures are only necessary during synthesis activities. Attend these because they will save your grade if you do horribly on the exams. A very difficult intro class.
I took this class thinking it would be an easy A and that I would actually learn but I was sorely mistaken. She does not prepare you at all for the class and only tells stories. The only good thing about the class is that there are synthesis activities that help your grade but the class itself was horrible and I have never experienced such apathy.
Attend lecture/make sure to do the readings. I would do the extra credit synthesis at the end because it could make or break your final grade. First exam is the easiest, second exam is significantly harder, so don't underestimate the course. But as long as you study well and do the readings, you'll be fine.
She had a rough Spring 2019 quarter. Cancelled class a couple times and raised the difficulty of her midterms and final after she got an angry email from one of the students. Extra credit if you attend discussion and do the last synthesis. Without it, I probably wouldve had a lower grade. Final is non-cumulative
I took her class in spring 2019 the second midterm was hard. she gives you the option not to take it and it will be replaced with your first midterm grade. if you did well on the first midterm don't take the second one. extra credit available go to discussions you can get an A. overall good class.
This professor does not respond back to emails, cancelled classes the day of, and gave study guides 3 days before the exam. We mostly watched films and the PowerPoint sides were based on definitions. And she goes off an tangents most of the times.
Professor Simmers is one of the best professors I had to far. Professor Simmers is really straightforward about what she wants and on the exams. As long as you review your notes then you should be fine on the exams.
Simmers takes her time when lecturing and makes sure students get everything down from ppts. Class consist of 1 paper (3-5pages). 2 exams and final which are 15mc and 3 short answer questions. Gives short answer questions ahead of time to prepare. She chooses 3 out of 4 questions and are worded the same. *She might change syllabus around
I really liked this course. It was Gender in Global Perspectives. I gave it a lot of effort so I got a high A (99%). She is funny, intelligent and easy to listen to. It's possible to do extremely well in her class. She is not a very tough grader and gives a lot of leniency. For my course, she dropped the lowest quiz and gave an extra 10 point
One of the best professors ever. We had an assignment and a quiz every week. Readings were relevant and on topic. Material is taught in an accessible way and easy to understand. She doesn't want to trick you, she wants you to succeed. Her effort and teaching style reflects that.
I've had her twice and I've completely fallen in love with her lectures and her personality. She is very "woke," straightforward and hilarious. She is always very reasonable with her expectations for the class. Her class is a real joy to be in, I would not pass up the opportunity to be in her class again.
Absolutely amazing professor!!! The greatest SOC professor UCR has. I wish I could take her for every quarter. Asynchronous classes. 10 quizzes, 10 assignments, but we only had 8 or 9 quizzes and 10 assignments. No final, no midterm. Absolutely love her. Gave us the whole week off for election week
This is my second time taking her and it is so easy. She is super chill and understanding. She gave us the week of elections off which was cool of her. Sometimes she can assign heavy reading but its rare. One of the best professors I have had here. She makes he class interesting for sure.
This was my first class with Professor Simmers, and I'm upset that I'm about to graduate! She's absolutely incredible, and so understanding. She's one of the most human professors I've ever had. She has an excellent clear-cut teaching style, and it was a breath of fresh air, as my other professors did not.
Probably the best professor I've ever had!! Such an easy class and she is so understanding and kind. She let us take a whole week off for election week because of the stress. I love her so much, and I really don't understand how she doesn't have a 5.0 and a 1.0 difficulty. Go to her office hours, and talk to her!! Love her so much
Although I didn't get an A, I would still take her class again and she was 100% fair and I got what I deserved. She is the most kindest and understanding professor with everything that went on during Fall 2020 quarter. She was aware and understanding of the pandemic and she even gave us a week off during the election week. 10/10 professor!
one of the best professors ive ever had at this school. genuinely cares and teaches in an engaging way. this class never felt like work to me because of how great of a professor she is
I'm not a sociology major, but I needed this class. Even through pre-recorded lectures professor Simmers was entertaining, and made a 2 hour lecture not feel as long. I'm not changing my major anytime soon, but Simmers is a pretty solid professor if you need your sociology credits met. Class is work, but manageable.
The class only consisted of weekly quizzes and assignments, which seemed more effective and much easier than a few big tests. Prof. Simmers is very laid back and approachable, even online, and I'd love to have her again if I had the chance. The syllabus was a bit confusing, but other than that the class was great.
I just found her to be a little boring and monotone. She posted lectures from last spring when I think it's important to adjust to your current audience. She really wasn't understanding at all for any special circumstances (especially during covid) and completely unresponsive. I personally wouldn't recommend her. Made me change out of my soc major.
Professor Simmers was extremely disorganized and made it really hard to know what was going on. The class was easy but I didn't learn a thing because she never uploaded lectures for us when she said she would so all of the information for the quizzes came from articles that we were assigned to read each week. Would not take her again.
I really enjoyed this class up until week 8 of the quarter. She prerecorded her lectures which were over an hour each and your grade was mostly quizzes and homework. But what sucked was when I found out about a 10 page research paper 2 weeks before it was due and she was completely unresponsive the ENTIRE quarter. She was also passive aggressive.
At Pitzer, Professor Simmers drew our attention to really important issues in society while keeping class humorous and light-hearted. She has a lot of intriguing and relevant stories to tell, and she focuses more on making class-time interesting rather than giving too much homework. Highly recommend!
Great pro, easy A. Only a few assignments and I did not have to attend any zoom meetings which is a plus. No materials needed to purchase (great when your in a pandemic) TA graded assignment which was weird grading but overall not bad. I try to take prof Simmers because of how good this class was & I enjoyed learning the topics used.
Very funny and an easy A. The issue I have is when she is argues against by someone using facts she says I have a doctorate. It got to the point where we called it a magical doctorate. The subject is sociology and anybody with half a brain knows not to believe or trust anyone that is silly enough to major or be involved in it.
Hands down the best Professor I have ever had. The class was completely asynchronous, but even meeting with her in office hours, she is so kind and understanding. Quizzes and assignments once a week, but so so so easy.
Dr. Simmers is an amazing professor and I had a great time taking her course. She is extremely passionate about sociology, super kind, and funny. She tells a lot of stories as examples for what she is talking about, making it easy to understand. If you do all of the assignments, its an easy A from a lovely professor. No final or midterms!
Professor Simmers is a very caring instructor for her students. She makes the class as easy as she can for us to actually understand the material but to also not put too much pressure on us. She also emphasizes mental health which I have never experienced in a professor before.
No finals or midterms but a quiz every 2 weeks based on reading or assigned videos or lecture. An assignment every week with 2-3 prompts short answers based on readings/assigned videos which may take up some time, it's due by every midnight Sunday. The discussions are extra credit attendance, so they are not mandatory.
professor was really cool and very engaged with all of her lectures. Sadly did not get to have her all semester due to medical leave but if you get the chance to take her, do it!
Too bad she wasn't back for WINTER quarter, she was amazing in the Fall. We were stuck with a T.A who ended up being the head of the sociology department, he was interesting to say the least... I think she left on medical leave and has not came back... she will be missed
Class was asynchronous. Pre-recorded lectures that are easy to follow and used for quizzes. Weekly assignments that are fairly easy for summer. TA was super nice and helped boost your knowledge. Take soc001 with simmers if possible.
The class felt lost and at times, it felt that the professor had given up on the class itself. There is not much to say, but sort of straight forward on the assignments.
professor is very passionate about the topics and kind to students. i've taken her classes before but this specific class was unorganized and she would sometimes forget to posts quizzes (later waived). it may have just been a rocky quarter for her. regardless, this class is very easy to get an A in and i would recommend.
Professor Simmers was amazing when I had her in the Fall. Unfortunately, she had to take medical leave, but the TA who took over the class was still interesting. I'd definitely take her class again if she returns - easy A and engaging lectures. Unstuck ai was a big help for exam prep too.
Easy class, fully online. Lectures were posted online, no need to attend lecture. Discussion paticipation was given extra credit for. Quizzes were posted late sometimes tho. Would take again.
shes an ok professor but flaky. she canceled class last minute for over half the quarter and at one point we thought she was gonna drop the quarter. assignments/quizzes were easy for the most part and discussion is extra credit. however her last test had many questions on things that were NEVER covered. its still easy to pass this class though.
Class is an easy A. Just beware that it's VERY easy to prove her wrong. Sociology is basically a group of opinions not supported by facts. Many of us proved her wrong and her response was “Well I have a doctorate!”. It cracked us up.
People saying Dr Simmers is a really easy A are right, but that does not make her a bad teacher. I learned a LOT in her class. She is very kind, and she clearly really cares about what she is teaching. Weekly assignments and no midterm or final. Very chill environment that opens up room for conversations and passion
She is amazing. She makes the classroom feel so safe and accepting. She gives great lectures and lets us go early. She has cancelled quite a few classes but her slides seem to give enough information for the quizzes. She has no final or midterm, only a weekly assignment and quiz. Attendance in discussion is extra credit. She is amazing! Take her !
I took her at my community college for Intro to Sociology and really enjoyed it! This class was also amazing. Lectures are optional and posted online, there is no midterm or final, but she is very inconsistent with classes (she tends to cancel a lot). I was not a fan of her TA (Neel Thakkar) but other than that I really loved this class.
Dr. Simmers is a very caring professor who has a lot of passion for what she teaches. Her lectures are short yet informative, and there are weekly assignments and bi-weekly quizzes. No midterm, no final. Class does rely extremely heavily on the textbook so its absolutely necessary to read it.
