In terms of school work her assigned work is challenging but not the point where it's anxiety ridden. She's also willing to help out greatly (in class). The reason for the low score is that, early on she will tell you she is accommodating for students, but ive witnessed that is not the case, and she will reject your queries for said help.
She was our lab instructor for 2250 genetics online. Very unreasonable amount of work, like absolutely ridiculous. Typically would take 6-12 hours to complete the amount of work she gives for a lab that is supposed to take 3 hours. Does not accommodate students and when my class told her the amount of work was very time consuming she did not care.
She is hands down the worst lab instructor I have ever had, no idea how she even got a job at MUN. The grading is so inconsistent and she offers no help whatsoever. I emailed her with a concern and she basically said that its not her issue. Online classes would be so much better if she was not a part of them.
Way too much work, completely unreasonable and offers no help. The work is difficult, and there is no help or introduction to guide you to the right path.
for a entry level bio course the tests were extremely challenging, the lecture videos that she posted were all over the place and 30+ mins each making it hard to stay focused.
The course as a whole seemed very unorganized. The lectures are confusing and much shorter than needed to explain the material. No notes are provided and it seems as though she is just reading the textbook. Her slides lack information and are not enough to do the whole course with, considering no other notes are provided.
Never responds to emails, lectures are long with no information on slides. Must pause lecture repeatedly to listen to what she says due to no information on slide.
Genuinely the worst notes, lectures, and teaching I have ever fell victim to. You'd get more out of it listening to a robot. Her notes are disorganized, she takes forever to respond to emails, and just sounds disinterested and monotone 24/7. Save yourself the trouble and avoid her at all costs.
I would never recommend taking Jennifer's class. Her lecture slides are horrible. You literally would not be able to make sense out of it. Her Videos are extremely boring and worst of all, she never explains. She reads directly from the textbook which annoys me a lot. She has 2 extremely difficult midterms and one final. Stay away!
Lecture slides are extremely vague and don't actually contain any information needed for success on the midterms. Basically going to have to study the textbook if you want to pass because the notes will not help you. Monotone boring lectures. Learnt more in my labs then I have the whole semester in lectures.
her lectures are pointless to watch. the only thing good about this class is the labs if you get good tas.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS SHE IS THE WORST
Her lectures are very vague and non-informitive. The only way you're going to learn all the material needed for the midterms and final is by reading through and understanding the textbook.
The courses consists of 2 tests and final. There are no assignments or quizzes. The course material consisted of lectures and notes. The notes covered only half of what was said during the lectures and were not understandable to read by themselves, must be paired with the lectures.
Lectures are only her reading what is on the lecture slides so don't even bother watching the lectures if she is your prof.
Slade is unfortunately not the best lecturer. She reads off the slides, but peppers in bits of incredibly important information that aren't listed anywhere. If you don't watch any of the lectures, you may find yourself struggling on certain questions. She only grades on labs, midterms, and the final, so ensure you do well in those for a good mark.
Never again will I take Slade! She doesnt prepare you for tests at all, no tests or assignments. All she gives you is two midterms and a final. She doesnt teach, all she does is read out of the book and off the slides. Avoid her if possible, shes making bio so much harder than what it should be!
Jennifer Slade is a terrible prof. She doesn't know how to teach, she just reads from the textbook. Her online lectures are useless. 2 Midterms and a final no preperation at ALL. AVOID AT ALL COST. I will never take her again.
Slade was not a good prof. Her online lectures were not helpful at all and they weren't helpful when preparing for the midterms and final. You can clearly tell she's reading her notes off of a piece of paper and she would say things that were important but they would not be on the slides you would have to find them on your own. I do not recommend.
Avoid Jennifer Slade. Her lectures are useless, she reads from the textbook the entire time. The slideshow presentation that she uses for "notes" are also useless, and contain the most basic information possible, which you will then be tested on the most advanced information. If you have Slade I recommend taking your own notes from the textbook
Jennifer is very sweet but her online lectures are horrible. She basically speaks all the information, and if you do not make your own notes it will be IMPOSSIBLE to understand hers. That being said, everything she tests is what she talks about in the lectures, but how she presents the information is so unorganized
She seems like a lovely person, but her lecture videos were hard to pay attention to and her slideshows were VERY vague in terms of how much information was on them. I just ended up reading the textbook and making my own notes. Evaluation was just 2 tests and a final, which didn't feel like enough considering how information-heavy biology is.
Dr. Slade simply cannot teach. Her lectures offer little to no information and have absolutely nothing to do with the tests. You'd think because she offers so little information in lectures that maybe she would be good at answering questions through email. You would be thinking wrong. She will ignore you. She also does not give back tests. <3
Get ready to teach your self.
Avoid Jennifer Slade at all costs. She seems to be a kind woman, but is the worst professor I could ever imagine. Her lectures and slides are completely useless & unbelievably vague. Get ready to teach yourself the entire textbook!
A solid option for intro bio! Very nice prof who offered tons of review for each section. Lectures are fairly short (30mins each), however they can be a bit disorganized so be sure to look at the textbook before taking any evaluation. Course evaluation only consisted of two midterms and a final which was not ideal, but overall not bad.
I know most people come on here when they just want to blame someone for there bad grades. But I get good grades so this is not the case. All I'm gonna say is do not get this prof, she gives terrible robotic lectures and notes that are impossible to learn from. She is also impossible to get in contact with. Get ready to learn the course alone.
Only thing graded was 2 tests and the final. Got a good grade but the lectures were slow yet hard to understand. Didnt enjoy.
Slade's lectures were very hard to watch and were super-draining. I learned more from reading the book and participating in the tabs than did in any lectures. There were only 2 tests and a final, so there was absolutely no way to increase your grade. The tests and final were also super hard as questions not even done in lecture were included.
I'm sure there's nothing wrong with her as a person, but I honestly wouldnt know because she's so absent. Her lectures suck, like i cannot describe how bad they are. You HAVE to read the book or you will not pass. We were only graded on 3 things- two tests and a final. Not great. There's only one reason i got an A...
Legitimately the worst professor I've ever had. Her lectures are unwatchable. They both simultaneously bombard you with information and don't give you enough info for exams. She may be a fine person, but she is a horrible teacher.
Professor Slades lectures are boring and useless. After watching the first few lectures I simply gave up because they were a waste of time. You basically have to teach yourself the course. There is very little information on the slideshows given and it sounds like she reads directly from the textbook. The tests were nothing like the review material
I'm confused by all the negative reviews Dr. Slade has. Her lectures don't have much info on them so you definitely need to take notes of what she's saying in class, but so far I haven't used the textbook and I'm doing well on evaluations. My biggest non-obvious tip for evaluations would be to study specific examples she gives in her lectures.
Just doesn't really teach what she tests on. Tests on the textbook and not what is in her lectures.
Lectures were miserable and none of the material was on the exams.
For a first level biology course she expects ALOT from her students. It’s not just understanding key concepts with her, it’s understanding the key concepts, breaking them down, and putting them back together blindfolded
Dr. Slade is an amazing prof who is always willing to listen and explain where you went wrong about things and how to improve! All her lectures have everything you really need to pass, but reading the textbook can really help your understanding! :)
Her lectures were bad, including just jot notes, sometimes just even the word of the topic. I stopped watching the lectures and used the textbook to teach myself the material.
She is not a very good instructor. She is a very nice person but her lectures are not very good at all and have nothing to do with her tests. The tests were almost impossible to finish on time because there were so many questions and they were nothing like the lectures. Overall, if there is any other option available I would choose someone else.
Professor Slade is a very genuine person but a terrible prof. The lectures are useless and the notes are hard to understand as there is very little context in them, therefore reading the textbook is the only way to pass the course. The exams were also way too long to complete on time so overall do not take this professor if you have the choice.
I've had Jennifer as a lab instructor for a few courses, this was my first time having her as a course instructor and she was great as always. She's super friendly, the assignments were short and easy, and the lectures weren't heavy she just highlighted important concepts. You'll be tested on material from the textbook though so do your readings!!!
Dr. Slade is great. I don't understand the other ratings here. Her assessment questions were straight from what she taught in the lecture. If you study the notes and understand them you will do well. There were no tricks. She seems very nice. This course had a great grading scheme as well.
I am so bored. Like, incredibly bored. Id rather just read the textbook then go to lecture. It would A) be more clear then Dr.Slade and B) be much more entertaining.
she basically just reads the slides and dont explain them. i can do that at home and basically teach myself the course. it was a waste of time. wasnt evaluated on anything besides the midterm/exam.
If you have her as a professor, you must be able to teach yourself. Lectures are boring, tests are hard, but she seems like a nice person!
Absolutely do not take a class with Dr.Slade. She seems like a decent human being but her lectures are dry and boring, she is very monotoned and lectures feel so long, and all she does is read from the slides. You will succeed better if you forget the lectures and teach yourself the material on your own.
her lectures are extremely dry and she just reads monotoned directly off of the slide. You will succeed better by just teaching the material to yourself instead of wasting time going to the class. You are graded by very few things.
She's a nice lady but a horrendous prof. Her lectures are exhaustingly slow and boring, and even useless. She never defers from the slides and the info covered is never on any of the 3 tests you have. There's no way to change your mark aside from midterms and finals. Text book reading is the only solution. I learned more online than from her.
Not many things to work on for grade boosters, tests which pretty much determine your whole grade. I found the best way to study for midterms with her as your professor is to have the review questions while looking through the textbook, then using her lecture slides to narrow down what's actually important. To those taking her now use this strategy
I found that she sticks to reading the slides and that's about it. she is very friendly however I would choose a different prof based on how I am as a student. she is often monotone with her lectures and I found with this semester she has cancelled class with little notice.
graded by two midterms and the final exam (not including the lab) and they were nearly impossible. so much information and diagrams to know thoroughly, did not explain the material, only read off of slides that were nowhere near as much detail as expected to know. canceled multiple classes for no reason.
Dr. Slade was a great person, but terrible prof. She would frequently cancel class, with little notice, and her midterms were very difficult. She also read off vague slides and would move through content very fast (to be fair, there was a lot of content to cover). She was very accessible and approachable, and would tell us the format of exams.
Jennifer is quite a nice person. However, she cancels a lot of classes with minimal notice (a day at most). Most classes end 15-20 minutes early with the content being strictly read off of a slide show. There isn't many options to boost your grade as it is strictly exam based. Class averages were extremely low for both midterms. Don't recommend.
Nice professor to talk to one-on-one but really just reads off lecture slides during class. Lecture slides are also not fantastic, and can be difficult/unclear to read. Really oversimplifies the material you need to know, lectures slides look very basic yet the exams are very detailed.
She's a nice person but not the best teacher. Tests were difficult, she has pretty bare notes with very little on them. She also canceled a lot of lectures pretty last minute. The class average for the two midterms was 40% and 51% so that says a lot about how she teaches.
Her test were almost impossible to complete and do good. You are only graded on 2 midterms, a few quizzes, the lab and final so very hard to boost your grade. If you have any other option avoid her. She has to boost both midterms to even get her class average close to a pass. The only way you can do half good is to use the textbook.
I really liked Dr. Slade. She expected students to come to class & listen or take notes, as well as engage with the class material on their own (e.g., answer review questions she provided). It is good practice for higher-level university classes, where the onus is on the student to work hard. Dr. Slade was fair and kind.
While a nice person, she is a terrible prof. You are absolutely better off skipping her lectures (where she reads off her slides in a monotone voice) and learning through the textbook while keeping up through the syllabus or the review questions. Slides oversimplified things as "all you need to know" and then test questions were more complex.
If you have any other option for a bio course do not take Slade. She seems like a nice person but is a nightmare as a prof. Her slides contain little to no relevant information that is not elaborated on in lectures and during assessments, many concepts are expected to be known in far greater detail than the slides.
Her notes in class are useless and you need to read the textbook to make any sense of them. Few assessments and much more complex than what is discussed in class. Get ready to teach yourself everything in this course. Nice person, terrible notes and professor. Textbook is a NEED in this course if you want to learn anything. Avoid Dr Slade!
Very nice woman but not the best teacher. Her notes are pretty well useless so may as well just buy the text and teach yourself.
While Dr. Slade seems like a very nice lady, I would avoid at all costs. Her slides have minimum information while her midterm questions require so much detail. She expects you to know things she barely explains so if you do take her, your better off learning it on your own.
The picks for intro bio profs is limited but if theres a choice, do not pick her. Slides have barely any info & you have to know so much more for tests. Incredibly hard tests with more diagrams then she tells you. Little to no point of going to class as you learn as much as if you didnt go. 2 quizzes, 2 midterms & a final all with terrible marking.
Very dull lectures, you would be better off teaching it to yourself. I emailed her about the same thing three separate times, and she has intentionally ignored it, I know this because the minute I emailed regarding a different concern she answered within the hour.
Choose the other prof.
Tests are so awful. She expects you to know so much with little to no outline. Instead of letting students use an application of knowledge, it's either right or wrong, no in-between. Avoid her at all costs.
Lecture could be dry. She did say that you had to read the textbook in addition to the lecture. Midterms/exams were pretty difficult but she posted very detailed review questions for each unit that asked about important info for the exams
Too much.
if you want to pass this course, avoid Slade at all costs! Exams are extremely difficult, lectures are dry, she cancels class 50% of the time, and she outlines key diagrams for tests, but she puts random ones on there even though she said it would be a key diagram. very inaccessible via email. takes a month to get grades back, slides r awful.
Makes what should be a pretty easy course almost impossible, avoid at all costs.
The notes are not good at all. If you can avoid her as a prof, do it
Even with reading the textbook, her tests are extremely hard. She gives key diagrams which might show up on test-then she uses diagrams that weren't listed. If your answer is not exactly right you get a zero. Impossible to get a good grade. She didn't post the last unit till the last day of classes before finals.
I would not let these reviews sway you from taking a course with Dr. Slade. Effort in first year general courses is a must. It is disheartening to see a lot of the comments bash her for things that have little to zero to do with your learning. Slides outline key concepts, tests are fair. Very approachable, and wants the best for her students.
Dr. Slade is a very caring and approachable person. Although, her lectures are extremely dry and the midterms/exams are extremely difficult. Key figures will show up on exams that were not listed as possible exam figures, exams are very unpredictable and it is extremely hard to do well in this course.
Dr.Slade I feel does not care how well her students do. It's hard to reach her outside of class, and most of the time cancels class. Lectures are dry, and notes are poorly made. Just use the book and make your own notes. Will test you on very random figures from the notes, Tests are hard and long, and she doesn't give you the proper study materials
Dr. Slade is truly a nice person. She cares about her students and wants them to succeed. Personally, I have found her tests to be very reasonable the past two semesters I have taken with her. I have always gotten 90+ on her exams. You can definitely teach yourself by learning the slides, which was great for me! (I am no bio genius).
Very friendly and accomondating prof! Biology is a heavy course load but she makes shortened slides that highlight key concepts and they have lots of colourful pictures to keep you engaged! She clearly outlines the sections of the text book, what key diagrams to study, and study questions. You must read the text book to understand the short slides.
Impossible to do well. Gives you a ton of outlined things to study and omits most of it to put different material on the exams. Personally studied for a week and a half straight for the final, even studied more than what was outlined and performed terribly. This is a first year course, take another prof because it is NOT supposed to be impossible.
What worked for me: attended lectures, watched recorded lectures afterwards & took detailed notes for test prep, & reviewed sections of the textbook as needed. Paid attention to lists & comparisons between topics on lecture slides, & made my own notes about them for review. Lots of work, but enjoyed the course. Dr. Slade was fair & approachable.
Lectures were boring and she just read off slides, but the midterms and final were all fair. As long as you can study the material and learn on your own you are alright. She provided all the potential diagrams that you may be tested on and stuck to them, and gave review questions, and all concepts on tests came from that, do the review and ur good.
Only answers emails half the time, uses diagrams she doesn't list as key figures, very tough grader. I read the textbook, followed along with lectures, took notes, & did the review questions, still found her incredibly difficult. Not sure why the positive reviews refuse to acknowledge that. The amount of 1/5 ratings should tell you everything.
Dr. Slade was accessible outside of lectures and allowed you to book an appointment with her to go over your midterm. The course is very material dense so outside work is required. All material is posted in the course outline but her slides are point form so the textbook is a must!
Attending professor Slades lectures were essentially useless to me. I went to the first few and with feedback from my peers, I didn't return. She teaches very little of what is in the books and expects students to know everything required in the text. She also asks questions on the exams that we're never covered or listed in the notes. Not good!
Her midterms and final exam were horribly done and covered very little of the course content. Her lectures were boring and nothing from her slides were on any examinations. Emailed her with many questions and never got a response and all midterms and final had to be curved over 8% because everyone did so bad. Avoid this prof at all costs!!!
Not sure why Dr.Slade has bad ratings. The material tested is clearly outlined and the tests are very fair. Always appreciates it when you go visit her, and is very approachable. Such a sweet prof! I'd recommend Dr.Slade to anyone. So nice!!!
B1002 is a tough course because there is so much material to learn. However, Dr. Slade did what she could to explain the material clearly and let us know what to expect on tests. I don't know what other profs are like for this course, but Dr. Slade was friendly, she held office hours, and she wanted to help. I would take another course with her.
awful. lectures are so dry and boring. she just reads the slides that are posted online for 50 minutes then says bye. your better off staying home and reading the slides yourself. 0 interest in the students or engaging anyone. everyone in her class does work in other courses during her lectures because they are useless.
If you are a person who enjoys teaching yourself the criteria then you will do fine. She is a very kind person and will stay after lectures if you have questions but her lectures are very boring and have minimal information. when writing an evaluation you will feel unprepared and as if most of the information was not covered in class. USE THE BOOK
Dr. Slade's classes are very boring as her slides have very little information. Her exams and quizzes ask very deep questions on topics that were never covered. I went to the first couple of week's classes and started learning all material on my own using textbook as she was no help. Avoid if possible!
dr slade is such a sweet person. yes, she can be tough on grades but that's because her tests are more about applying the concepts instead of just memorization. her notes do tend to be quite brief, so definitely read the book. lectures were meh in my opinion. she posts everything online and all tests are done online which was nice.
Do not take her class Hardly taught the material, slides were very hard to study as she did not write any complete sentences. Would not recommend at all. It's a shame there aren't more options for bio profs
It was just as well as I took the class online. She just read straight from the notes without giving much more information which I could have just read them at home. It would have been the same as going to the lectures.
Dr. Slade is a queen. I don't understand the bad reviews at all. She posts all of her notes online and they are very detailed and great for studying. She often ended lectures a few minutes early and each class before a midterm was used as review - the only professor i've had that has done this and the midterms and final were online!!!
Dr Slade is a very nice person and you can tell she cares about her students. If you have questions she is more than happy to answer them and will help you where she can! That being said her lectures are dry and you're better off just reading the textbook. Her notes are not easy to follow along, just a few bullet points per slide.
im not sure why Dr. slide has such bad ratings, in my experience, she was great. Bio-1001 is an information-heavy course and just like any other science course, you need to put in the work yourself in order to succeed. my only complaint is that its hard to improve your grade just because there isn't much evaluations but overall I liked Dr. Slade.
Jennifer Spade Seems very contradicting. Her classes though well prepared are fast paste and consists of notes that are picture books which hold the bare minimum details. Be prepared to read the textbook start to finish as I and many of my classmates had to do. She's very caring and knows what she is talking about. However I would not take again.
You are better off not going to her class and letting the Ameoba sisters on YouTube teach you the whole course. Her notes are very bland and difficult to understand. She gives no additional information and just reads off of the complicated slides. This course was boring, but she did not attempt to spice it up.
I already had knowledge of most of the concepts in the course, so for me, studying was minimal; however, there was a lot of material to cover. Her rubrics are clear on what the tests cover. All tests/exams were online at home. Her lectures are pretty dry, but it is a fair course overall. She is very kind and approachable when you have questions.
Her lectures were boring and the notes didn't go into detail. She was clear with criteria and what was expected. Unless you already have knowledge of the course, then you will have to read the textbook. Exams were more applied knowledge than questions straight out of the notes and textbook.
Lectures taught exclusively with slideshows. Class was incredibly boring and honestly not worth going to. Midterms and final were online with barley enough time to complete them. She did provide a clear outline of the test content.
I wouldn't recommend Professor Slade unless you are someone who can easily learn all material by yourself. She reads off a slideshow that doesn't even have a third of the information needed to learn for tests. She was very sweet and hosted Q & A sessions before tests but she just doesn't know how to teach. READ THE TEXTBOOK if you want to do well!
Lectures are all fairly dry and Dr. Slade moves fast through a slideshow so I stress to take extremely brief notes during lecture. She is a very nice and approachable person however, and always ready to answer any question you may have post-lecture. Overall solid prof for bio 1000, be ready to do some txtbk and slideshow review on your own time.
Lectures were insanely boring. I hated this course with her. She simply read off her slides, copied from the textbook, no need to be there, in a monotone voice. Only online exams, which were fairly easy and if you read the textbook you would do well, but most of the material on the exams is not covered in her slides. Hard to reach outside of class.
- Reads directly from slides with little to no elaboration on topics - Changes slides quickly with little time to write notes -Hard to reach outside of class; from personal experience, does not answer emails often -However, seems like a very approachable and nice individual -Would recommend if you are okay with teaching yourself topics
Reads directly from slides with little to no elaboration on topics. From personal experience, hard to reach outside of class; does not answer emails often. Progresses through slides very quickly with little time to write notes. Does seem approachable and nice. Would only recommend if you want to teach yourself the course without having to attend.
She says everything you need to know is on the slides, but you have to be at her classes to explain the slides or they don't make sense. This class feels like she is bored teaching it. I understand many things need to be taught so I am sure that it's hard to balance teaching everything and engaging the students. But there is no effort on her part.
She is a better lecturer than some others. People complain about silly things. Yes her slides are in bullet form, you have a textbook, use it. Especially if you aren't going to show up to her lectures. Because she absolutely does explain those notes in lecture. She is incredibly approachable and helpful outside of class. She cares if you learn.
Her midterms and final were all online, however, they all had so many questions on them that the majority of students simply could not complete them. Her slides and teaching style are bland and unhelpful. Her marking scheme for exams is also highly specific and directly contradicts material taught. Overall, if you have any other option, take it!
Kept giving midterm/final that were way too long and every student I asked could not complete in the given time. Most of the questions came directly from the slides which was good and she did curve everything but if she is going to curve it idk why she didn't give a reasonable evaluation to begin with. She is survivable but its just constant stress
Avoid! Does not narrow down testable material at all. Won't give you any direction and will test on legit anything in the book. Lectures are filled with unrelated things and are not in sync with the labs so you're constantly teaching yourself
Avoid if at all possible. Tought super fast just to end lectures early or cancel because we were ahead. Read directly off the slides. Did not care about the course at all. Midterms and final were online which is the only reason I was able to do good in the course. Would not return the midterms. very boring, probably the worst prof I've had at mun
Took BIO 1001 with her in 2022. Worst prof I've ever had at MUN to date. To give an example, I remember on the final exam, there was a topic that pretty much was 3/5 questions. This "topic" was mentioned once, on ONE SLIDE out of the entirety of the presentations. It was not even explained, just the topic was wrote as a "side note". HORRIBLE PROF.
Professor Slade's class is straightforward, but you'll need to put in the work. While her slides lack details, the textbook is crucial. Use Unstuck ai and other resources to stay on top of the material.
I sent her an email in October of 2024 with multiple follow ups and she still hasn't responded. What more needs to be said?
