Well I took Victor's class her grading system is brutal. For a grad course I knew I would have todo alot of work, but her class workload is the equivalent of three other classes. I would highly advise taking GOVT 510 with another Professor.
Professor Victor is amazing and quite honestly the best professor I've had so far at GMU. She is so nice and her lectures are interesting and to the point. Tests are straight from the notes and she sends out study guides. I wish she taught more classes so I could take her again. If you are even remotely interested in gov TAKE HER. Highly recommend.
Prof Victor is easily one of the best GMU Professors I've had. She makes even the most boring subject interesting and provides a lot of personal experiences to government-related topics. Lectures are interesting and something I looked forward to. 2 midterms and 1 final. Tests are straightforward and she gives you study guides. Highly Recommend.
Turned me away from making my Major Government
Professor Victor was AWESOME!! Attendance is not necessary but if you want to pass, you have to go to class. Puts all of her power points online and has study guides for the two tests and final test. In class activities, that you do online, are easy grade boosters. Has 3 review sessions for the final. Really helpful and passionate! Take her!!
Good professor. The tests are easy if you read the text book. She offers extra credit on the tests and let us retake all the in class assignments at the end of the semester. Lectures are kind of boring and go off topic. Read the textbook!
She's a great teacher and lecturer. She makes lectures very interesting, she's young and tries to reach out to us, and actively gets us to engage in class. HOWEVER, her tests are difficult, and a lot of the content will NOT come from the Study Guide. I have taken 100 & 300 level classes, and her class is definitely difficult for a level 100 class.
Professor Victor is straightforward. There are 2 "Midterm" exams considering the class is split into three parts. The final exam is composed of 50 questions from the last third and 50 comprehensive questions. I would definitely take her again. I recommend anyone take her, but participation will make the class more enjoyable. No tech allowed.
She wastes the first half hour doing current events with twitter. You can get straight A's on the in class work and barely pass the class. She gave us three tests despite how much material was covered. I needed this class despite majoring in any form of government, so I should have taken another professor because of my low interests and career choi
Professor Victor is fantastic. I loved her class. I only went to class when I felt like it (probably about half of the time), and I still got an A+. The exams are extremely easy and her lectures are interesting. She's a great professor and I plan to take more of her classes.
Worst Professor I have ever had.
Honestly just avoid her like the plague. Her comments are condescending. If you can wait for Dudly to teach GOVT 510 do so.
Without a doubt the Worst Professor I have ever had.
She is very Hypocritical excepts you to do a ton of work while she does nothing to help you succeed in class. Focuses primarily on her own research without offering guidance for her students. She wont accept any work that clashes with her own opinions and considers qualitative research to be worthless. If you can try to take this class elsewhere.
One of the best professors I've had at Mason and definitely one of the smartest. Classes are engaging and she always gives good paper feedback. If you're a good writer and put a bit of effort into the class, you should get an A.
Victor is an excellent professor. She kept lectures both engaging and interesting by involving the students in the class. The class might require a little studying, but the class is more than manageable & fair (show-up and listen). MC tests and daily activities. Victor is very nice and cares a lot, not to mention very smart! Definitely take her! :)
Victor is a great for professor for any government major. Starts class with radio music while she sets up and gives very good, active lectures. Relates well with students and comes up with imaginative examples when lecturing. Always available after class to explain details further if there's confusion. Definitely recommend her.
She was an amazing professor!! Her lectures were entertaining! Class is sort-of-kind-of mandatory because afterwards you would have an in-class activity to do, but it's super easy. Her exams are also very straight forward questions, no trick questions, which is what I absolutely loved about having her as a professor. Would love to have her again!
By far my favorite Professor this year! I came in hating American Gov and wound up loving it, I can't wait to take her 307 class. Prof. Victor is funny, and knows what she is talking about. She does a great job arguing for both sides of the political spectrum so you don't have one side shoved down your throat. Be sure to read your textbook!
You must read a textbook or you will fail. There are in class activities which will count as 15 percent and three exams. If you read a textbook, take notes, and review them you should be fine. Exams would affect almost everything so beware. Not an easy A but doable A.
She does give you study guide, review session, and Facebook study group. But if you do not read the textbook, you won't pass. Other than that, there's no assignments except In class activity which is easy. There are only 3 exams including final. Test was tough though.
She is definitely the best professor at Mason thus far!!!! She is super interactive with her lessons and loves the students opinion. she is eager to expand your knowledge in American politics. One major tip is to read current events and headlines this will definitely help in class participation. For a class of 300+ prof. Victor did a superb job!!
Professor victor is a tremendous professor as she relates to the students, and applies all of the concepts learned in class to current events in the news. If you put in the work and stay engaged in lectures, Victor's class will be rewarding, and it may inspire you to consider a GOVT degree as it did for me.
Professor Victor is easily one of my most respected instructors. I was excited to have a madame Professor for a change in GOVT Major curriculum core classes. This is one of those classes that was a learning lesson: I finished with a C but I owe that to not reaching out for help on spatial models! If you don't pick it up in lecture, ask!!!
She is an expert in political fields and she explains everything in very details. However, you need to read a textbook because the tests are mostly based on chapters you read. My advice is to make sure you finish the chapters she will cover before classes which you are told to do. If you don't read a book, you wont get a good grade.
One of my favorite professors. Experienced in her field and passionate about her work. Really easy to work with. Don't be afraid to speak up in class. She likes to learn students names.
Whether you do well or not is based on how much you throughly read a textbook. As she would say, make sure you read a chapter that she will cover before going to your class. Also, there is a summary for each chapters of the book on blackboard which is super helpful. However, do not only rely on those because they wont be replacement
Victor herself is a nice professor, but her class is not easy to get an A. There are multiple choice questions at the end of every class for credit. Those will not really help your grade because gradings are heavily on midterms and finals. Read textbook and its summary throughly on time so that you don't stress yourself for catching up. It's doable
DON'T TAKE HER!!!
She knows nothing about teaching and politics. if you want to fail the class take her! If you care about you JPA and want to learn AVOID taking her!
This class is surly difficult. There are intensive textbook readings which you will be expected to complete specific chapters before attending lectures. Grades are heavily on your midterms and final exam. Rest of grades are multiple choice questions which you will have at the end of every single class. These are quite small grades. Do well on exams
This class is where you are suppose to finish reading specific chapters listed on the calendar in the syllabus. Not reading a textbook is the main reasons why you struggle in this class. There are a lot of readings and it's very easy to fall behind if you don't keep doing your readings regularly. If not, then this class isn't for you.
If I were to retake this class with Prof. Victor for a better grade, I would do the readings. Her study guides do not follow the exams very well and since I did not do readings my only way to study were with the study guides and I ended up getting a B- in the class. She is great as keeping the topics interesting and a great professor in general.
I am low-key obsessed with Professor Victor!! I thought i would hate this class, but now she's the reason i'm even interested in Politics. The lectures are important to understand what's going on, & I enjoy attending them more than any other class. I never did the readings, i only used the textbook for reference when studying, but i'm doing well.
Exams cover huge portions of textbook. She is a good professor, but you still have to read textbook chapters she assigns you every class even though she doesn't grade on them. Don't expect to do well unless you are disciplined enough to read a textbook as well as relying on her lectures and lecture slides.
Professor Victor is literally one of the nicest and most knowledgeable professors you can find in the govt. department at Mason! If you take her 307 class, be prepared to work hard and be attentive in class, but its totally worth it.
Professor Victor is one of the most genuinely passionate professors I've ever had. She truly knows her trade, extensively, and cares about the students she teaches. Out of a lecture of 200+ students, she makes an effort to know your name. Sit in the front and participate and the class will be fun and worth while.
She was a great professor, genuinely passionate about what she is talking about. Inspiring to listen to, going to the lectures would be beneficial but if you do not and heavily study the lecture notes (posted online) , you should be fine. Do the class activities and read. Tests aren't hard if you just study. Highly recommend this class.
Amazing. She is a brilliant professor who cares for her students and will learn your name in a class of 300 if you participate. Knows what she is talking about but will sometimes waste too much time talking about the news. Read the text book, 2 midterms, cumulative final, and daily short questions. Attend class and read and you will get an A
Class made up of 3 exams, 2 midterms and 1 cumulative final. Try to read the textbook if can, but can pass the class without reading it (since the chapters are so long), as long as you go to class and take good notes (aka copy slides and extra explanations). Nice person, knowledgeable and dedicated to her field. Lectures are clear to understand.
Lecture based class with three exams. Posts study guides, extra study material and holds review sessions. Very nice and respectful, tests are easy if you study and go to lectures.
Absolutely deplorable. She doesn't teach, doesn't give extra points, and does not care about any of the students. Do not take her because she is horrible.
Test material comes from a textbook question bank, meaning that lots of the material on exam must be read from the textbook and there are weird questions asking about minute details. Must attend lecture, the daily "quizzes" via blackboard can only be answered by lecture material. If you skip too many of the "quizzes" you cannot pass.
Caring, very kind, and helpful. One of the best of the all. Take her
She is an amazing professor who cares about her students. The class has 2 midterms and 1 final. She gives out study guides and if you pay attention in lecture and go over the slides and the study guide you will pass. Attend class and read and you will get an A
Jennifer Victor is one of the best professor I've ever had in my academic career. I had her to fulfill social behavioral science. She was very bright, positive, always smiling, and kind. She teaches in a way what students who take government course are expected to do. Words cannot describe I much I love her. She's really nice and loving person.
She is funny and cares about her students!
I took her at 2015 fall. Lectures did not cover everything on the tests, so textbook readings were required. Anyway, she is really nice person. She truly cares about students and tries to help if they need. I would definitely take her again next semester to fulfill global understanding.
Professor Victor is amazing, she is one of my favorite professors. She really tries to connect with all her students which most teachers wouldn't do in a class of 200. I really recommend her for GOV 103 if you can. Her daily quizzes are easy if you pay attention in class and the exams aren't bad if you study the study guide.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamazing, took her my semester as a transfer student and let me tell you I LOVE her. Go to class pay attention go to review sessions and you will do well. Quizzes are fairly easy and open note. she is hilarious and caring. Definitely taking her for 300.
Prof Victor was very passionate and easy to understand. Her lectures did not contain all the information on the tests, so reading the chapters in the textbook are recommended. Daily quizzes each class, usually 3-5 questions with answers on the lecture slides. Overall, very positive experience in this course with her as my professor. Take her!
This is a lecture heavy course, but reading the textbook can be super helpful. She understood that not every student was a government major and that we may not totally care, but after taking her class I do care about what happening in politics---a question asked at every lecture. Study her test reviews , ask questions, listen to lecture and read!
She's really nice. I get lost sometimes, but she's always willing to help. Do recommend.
I bet all the good comments were written by her. None of my classmates thinks shes a good professor. She talks a lot to make u think shes smart but She really does not say anything important. Shes good at repeating herself. If you want to learn a void. If you want to pass, its doable but you have to read the book dont count on her lectures
I love Professor Victor! She is extremely smart and unbiased. Her expectations are very clear and achievable. I met with her after every test to go over it and ask other questions and she was always helpful, kind, and funny. She also helped me with essays for other classes. While attendance wasn't mandatory, I went because I loved class so much!
Victor is one of the gems in the Schar school. She is super educated, really knows what she's talking about, and her enthusiasm rubs off on her students. The class is about research, and she sometimes talks about her own research and how she applies what we are learning which is pretty cool. It's a lot of work and reading but she makes interesting.
Professor Victor is the best professor I have had during my four years at George Mason. Her classes are extremely interesting and sometimes require a fair deal of work and/or reading. Her classes were the only courses I actually enjoyed doing the work for/ participating in. If you're into political science, her courses will be great for you.
GOVT 300 itself is very difficult by itself. Dr. Victor makes it not any easier or harder. The class was made up of 4 huge homework assignments, midterm, final, MASSIVE/HARD term paper and DataCamp that takes probably 16 hours to complete, and two blackboard quizzes a week. Dr. Victor is a smart professor but for govt300 its hard no matter what.
Get ready to do work if you are taking professor Victor for research method. Victor is really knowledgeable in this field. Daily quizzes, 5+ DataCamp assignments, 4 lab assignments, one 10+ page paper which is sectioned into 5 parts and R programming,a midterm and a final. THIS IS NOT GOING TO BE LIKE GOVT 103 GUYS. Get ready for sleepless nights.
She's a sweetheart and truly cares about her students. Tests require textbook readings but her lectures were easy to follow and explanatory. She's knowledgeable and influential. I'd recommend if you're willing to put in the work!
Tough tests. Very lecture heavy but lectures aren't that helpful. Use textbook.
Prof. Victor is incredibly insightful when it comes to research methods and analysis and is extremely accessible and understanding about your struggles as a student. There are daily quizzes and a lot of work in this class. Stay on top of it and don't be afraid to contact her or the TA.
Class is a large size, however Prof. Victor encouraged questions and comments from students. Sometimes too many that didn't allow her to finish the slides. Short daily quizzes that mostly relate to slides and not the textbook. She has 2 "midterms" and a cumulative final exam.
Dr. Victor is a very knowledgeable and intellectual individual. She also is relatively fair to all of her students, my only complaint - at times she does come across as being pretentious, especially when asked a "simple" question. Also, would have preferred if she held the review sessions for exams rather than the TA
She's one of those people who are not super nice but nice if they want to be at times. She is open minded and very knowledgeable about politics. 100% tested grades. 3 exams and daily quizzes. Interesting lectures but can spend class talking about current events. Exams are pretty easy just study and use the textbook.
Extraordinary professor deserves her teaching awards! Brilliant, engaging, and nationally recognized in her field. Read her Twitter feed. :-) Beginning of class spent explaining current events from a political science perspective. Makes the subject very interesting, even for non-majors. Responsive by e-mail. Provides study guides and flashcards.
Victor was an okay teacher. She assigns a lot of readings, but I eventually stopped using my textbook and studied based off her lectures, quizzes and review which was enough. Tests can be hard, so don't expect to pass without studying. She also gives quizzes after every class that are to be completed by the end of the day.
I had taken Victor before, so I was shocked at how different my experience was last semester. The textbook wasnt helpful (Prof. Victor even told us so), she would tell us we could use certain materials for certian things and then back track, the research paper failed to have clear instructions, and there was no organization to the lectures.
A really nice person :)
Love this professor so much and will honestly miss her next sem. Quite a bit of reading and material each week but totally manageable. She made online class fun and our class discussions were fun and informative. Learned so much from her. Her twitter is 10/10 also. She also wrote a letter of rec for me super last minute. My fav professor at mason
Professor Victor is the best. She really cares about the topics covered and makes it her mission to make the students understand the content. As for the textbook she uses, it's very easy to understand. Prof. Victor also cares about her student's grades. She is a gem at the Schar School and I definitely recommend her.
Professor Victor is really cool and I enjoyed her class. She is engaging with her students and treated us like her equal even though shes kind of a famous Schar School prof. Her online lectures were fun and engaging and interesting! I really learned a lot!
I really liked Victor!!! The only thing I will warn anyone thinking about taking her class is that she isn't super accommodating when it comes to deadlines. Takes off points even if valid reasons are provided.
Dr. Victor respected her students greatly. She treated us as equals and found ways to engage the class without starting political fights. She is very organized on blackboard, easy to navigate. She gives you her expectations in the syllabus so read it. Deadlines are final, plan ahead for homework. She treats us as equals so she has higher standards.
Very clear as to what assignments are and when they are due. Very inspirational and was great about making it feel like we were in person even though we were online!
Professor Victor is a great professor who definitely cares about her students. However, at least during Covid-19, her class had too much busy work that ultimately didn't matter after the midterms and final weight. Her expectations are clear, though you have to work for your grade.
While I enjoyed going to the lectures and learning about American Government, I feel like this was a lot of work for a 100 level course. I honestly learned more from watching her lecture videos posted every week than reading the textbook, they were very helpful!
Prof. Victor is amazing She taught material fluently and without partisan bias. She made learning about some mundane topics super interesting and would throw candy at the class for asking questions. The only setback may be the CEA's but she gives you all semester to do them and its to get you involved in society so its really beneficial. Take her!
Very great professor. She really cares about her work and her students. Class is clear in expectations. She is very involved in student life and provides many great opportunities for students.
Prof. Victor engages the class with nonpartisan views!! Submit 10 CEAs (do them every week, submit 1-3 more for extra credit). Graded Attendance for Recitations (which does help you understand the lecture/textbook context more). Relied on lecture slides more (textbook is supplemental) for 2 midterms and a final. Not easy, but somewhat manageable!!!
Dr. Victor is such a good professor to take 103 with. There are weekly online reading quizzes, but you get two chances, and you get to see what you got wrong after the first attempt. You get to bring one page of notes into the major tests. She's a very experienced professor, and genuinely cares about all her students. Very good professor.
Dr. Victor is an OUTSTANDING professor. Her class is incredibly simple as there is one textbook, a weekly reading quiz and ten civic engagement activities, which are due by the end of the semester. It is her way to engage us in politics and the GMU community. Overall, her lectures are great and I would highly recommend her if you need this credit.
Dr. Victor is an incredible professor with amazing lectures. She makes the content super interesting, and while attendance is not mandatory, coming to lectures is incredibly helpful. There's enough easy points, but make sure you study for the tests, and use the cheat sheet option she gives you.
Dr. Victor is one of my favorite professors. Her lectures were great and if you pay attention and take notes during the lecture, the readings are pretty easy. There were weekly untimed reading quizzes, 2 midterm exams, a final, and civic engagement activities. All 3 exams had bonus questions for lots of extra points. Highly recommend Dr. Victor!
There were two things graded: Attendance and one project. Almost 1/3 of classes were canceled. The class covered R-studio and I still have no idea anything that happened in that class.
319 is easy with her, just be sure to actually do the final project, and show up to class. If you do that, you're going to get an A+. It's that simple.
One thing I am sure of is that her teaching style and exam format is definitely not friendly to international students!
I'm not a full-time student but I'm doing Professor Victor's Teaching Company course on 'Understanding the US Government'. I am watching her course on DVD at home. So far the lectures are crystal-clear and well organized and she's an excellent speaker. I trust that Dr. Victor's college courses are similarly excellent and informative.
Dr. Victor is one of the smartest professors I have had, and she is always constantly accessible. In regards to GOV 103, if you are a Government student, who has lived in America for most of your life, you should be able to get at least a B with your eyes shut. The textbook is really good, but if you know/read the news, you don't need it.
Dr. Victor might just be the greatest professor of all-time. She's helpful, caring, and if you were in Dem Lab, she was also hilarious 100% of the time. I want to find more classes taught by her for me to take.
I took a FULL YEAR class with Jvic, she's an alright professor and she's clearly passionate, and I was in the last class before she stops running demlab. She's not a bad professor, but she has favorites. The class significantly changes second semester, using Rstudio and graded harshly for a one credit class. She also relies heavy on the TAs.
I had JVic for the whole year in Dem Lab. She is really caring and knowledgeable but she definitely has favorites. I definitely can say it was a pleasure being apart of her finally time teaching DEM Lab. I definitely will say she relies a lot on the TA's to help, but overall it was easy and a smooth sailing this whole year.
Very engaging lectures, she's always completely present, and you can tell she's extremely passionate about what she teaches. Always willing to help in office hours. Not necessarily an 'easy' class, you do have to do the readings and always be ready for pop-quizzes, but the readings aren't too hard and most things are covered in the lecture.
Dr. Victor is one of the greatest professors I have ever had
This class was pretty easy. There were pop quizzes every week, but most were with your table group. Some were open notes, while others weren't. Only 1 mid-term and 1 final (no notes allowed). You can get A's on both if you study the test preparation guide she gives you. I would recommend Dr. Victor for GOV103.
This class is great; Professor Victor is great and everything. The class is easy, but she goes on tangents and brags about herself a lot, which can be very off-topic. But take her class, she's very inspirational in so many ways!
