So far she is a great teacher. Her powerpoints are straight forward but still pay attention to what she says. She gives quizzes the next class if the class is not responding when she reviews previous lectures-to make sure we understand. Read the assigned pages as they're included on the midterm. Document analyses are due each week. Great teacher.
Super fun teacher and really nice. She's extremely helpful and she explains history in easy terms so everyone understands. We have 9 essays to do but it was interesting and she's willing to help on the essay if you need it. Great prof and I hope she teaches HIS 102!
She's one of the best professors I've had this semester. She's extremely clear and teaches very well. The essays are not bad at all, she can help you, and you get the hang of it quickly. I actually learned a whole lot in this class!
if you like to write then shes teh teacher for you. assigns really hard esssays every week!!! such a drag. you'll pass if you do your homework and pay attention. powerpoints are not helpful. if your not in class youre pretty much screwed.
Amazing professor!
High energy professor who clearly loves the subject. If you're confident in your writing ability, and you can speak up in class, you'll get alot out of this class and find it easy.
Superb professor overall. Highly recommend and would take this professor again for other history courses. The final grade was my fault and has no relations to Dr. Winters
I used to find History boring and dull and I thought this would be a tough class. Dr. Winters made this course seem so easy and I learned a lot. Sometimes you don't even need to open the textbook. If you attend the lecture , she will teach the entire reading in a much more comprehensible way. If you want a great teacher. TAKE HER!
BEST PROFESSOR
She was a very good teacher and very interested in the topics covered in class. Extremely helpful if you reach out to her and quick to respond to emails. She's a pretty easy grader, and she provides great feedback so you can improve on future assignments. Only had a midterm and final (no other tests).
Dr. Winters invigorated my love for history. She is always available when you need her. She makes you work to learn and understand. There is only one midterm and one final exam. Most of the questions are straightforward multiple choice and short answers are super easy if you study the lectures. She has a due date for ALL assignments towards the end
She was a great teacher from what I've seen. Not too strict, just do the work you'll be fine! Lectures are kinda boring not mandatory though, also no need to purchase textbook saved a hundo!
Dr. Winters is an entertaining and helpful professor. If you show up and take notes and do the weekly blog journals and quizzes, you will get an A. But keep in mind that she speaks so fast and talks herself out of breath. It even made me feel like I was out of breath, too. Overall, easy A class.
She is great! I was never great at history and I did not want to take a history class but she definitely changed my view about this class. Love her class! I passed with a lot of note taking and I did all the reading assignments.
Professor Winters is a history enthusiast and it shows throughout her lectures. I have never been one to enjoy a history class and I could not get enough of this one! She gives reminders about homeworktests every class. No textbook and all the reading is provided through blackboard links.
I really truly enjoyed her class even it was tough (esp for int student). Lots of hard readings! amazing topic choices which lead to amazing lectures. She really inspires student to discuss in class. Take her if you truly want to learn abt HIS, &WRITING (great feedback) She has a passion and she transfer it to her students. I really love her class
Overall she's a very nice professor! However she's a very hard grader, so just know you must take all assignments seriously and follow all the guidelines! She does give you a lot of homework and quizzes and the quizzes do prepare you for the exams. It's better to show up to class because most of the quizzes are based from lectures!
Makes history interesting. Lectures are necessary/informative. Readings aren't as important--you should read them before class, but probably not take extensive notes as I did. Specifies what she wants on papers, so listen to her! Can't think of anything to make the class better, except to make the class a joke/ez. Should you take her? Yes?... YES!!
She gives weekly quizzes and short response "essays" (they are like 300 words). Will give you zeros for plagiarism. The lectures are fun and are easy to pay attention to but you do not have to come to them. Also, you don't have to buy a textbook but readings are on BB. There is also a lot of writing. Overall, enjoyed her class.
She gives weekly quizzes but they are easy and help on the midterm and final alottt
Amazing Professor. When you re doing your homwork make sure you are accurate and cite your souces othewise she mark o points. Give you feed back on weekly Blackboard quises(there preety shortt and easy aalong with bing open note) she understands studnets
She expects you to write at her level. Do not recommend her. She never likes papers you write in any way that she will never give 70% or higher for a grade. Take my word, and skip this prof.
Amazing Professor!!! Usually not that into history and not a big fan of writing but her assignments are very clear. She replies to emails super fast (she'll have conversations over email late at night before an assignments due)(bless her) interesting lectures but if you miss one class you miss all the material but she is great!!!
Don't expect too much from her. She doesn't grade fairly. Very tough with grades. Exams were nothing from material. I am not that much into history as she increased that feeling I have. She was clear but not fair at all.
She's really passionate about the subject which is always great, and she likes to joke around! She answers questions and likes to have conversation going in the classroom. There's weekly quizzes but they'll most likely show up again on the midterm and final so do those quizzes! Her short responses are tough due to her grammar restrictions.
By far the best professor I have ever had. Her class can be tough if you do not show up to class. There were 10 essay's due during the semester. She gives out extra credit. Willing to help you understand the material. The test and exams are from the notes.
I am a Biology Major but love, love, Professor Winters! Such a nice Professor, she expects a lot from you, of course you have to work for an A. But if you do all the readings + attend her class and of course study for the exams, I do not see why you should not pass! There are weekly quizzes which are a piece of cake, if you take good notes! G. Luck
She starts her class right away and always begins with a PowerPoint. There are weekly quizzes that are open note. As for papers, you really understand how to cite Chicago style because that's how she wants you to format your essays.
Terrible teacher. She was really rude and not understanding. I submitted my first college essay through the chat link on blackboard well before the due date. And i told her in person that i submitted it. She didn' accept it because i typed it on the chat link and not a word document. It was my first college assignment and i didn't know any better.
She gives out way too much work. I've honestly done more essays and readings in her class than in any of my english classes. If you're taking plenty of other classes, I dont recommend her. Theres plenty of teachers out there that wont make you work as much as her and you'll end up with the same credit.
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER, UNLESS YOU WANT TO SWEAT TRYING TO GET A. I love history, but I did not graduate from US School and I had no idea what is Chicago style and how to write essays. Don't expect from her explanations about it, she will give you syllabus and will wish you good luck. Screwed up first essay? She won't give you second chance.
Assigns lots of readings and essays I have no idea how she has a B+ rating when more than half of the class has already dropped her! Thats obviously a sign that she isnt good. Please save your money and go with another professor that wont work you as much as her. She isnt understanding if you mess up on anything she wont give 2nd chance. AVOID HER!
English is second language which made the class challenging for me she has set it as a requirement herself that eng 111 and eng 112 is required for her class when reality you dont need those classes. midterm was hard and power points dont have enough info in them. missed a class? good luck.
Tough grader takes off points for the dumbest stuff on papers. Treats a level 101 class as an upper level course, ridiculous amount of essays. Would rather have her grade my essays on content rather than Chicago Style errors. Don't take her course. Also Midterm was tough, 7 essay questions? Psh get out its a Level 101 course.
Absolutely do NOT recommend this professor. She'll make you do 5 huge essays that come with long readings like hello?? this is a 101 course i even double checked one time to make sure i didn't take honors or something. The amount of work she assigns is overwhelming and unnecessary. I think she forgets that she teaches 101 at a community college
Very tough grader and not understanding or lenient about anything, especially turning something in late. She assigns 5 essays and open note weekly quizzes. She also gives out a little extra credit but its all stuff that you have to attend outside of class like a seminar as if we don't have jobs or other classes. And she is a grammar nazi!
thinks everyone wants to be a historian, attendance isn't mandatory unless you want to pass! she makes the power points very vague so if you miss a class tough luck assigns 5 essays and you'll have a quiz every week so if you want time for yourself, work and other classes do not take! you have been warned. kinda rude if you ask questions in class
So be prepare to be on time every class. If you are late she doesnt put any assigned HW on BB so your only option is to ask your classmate. Lot of reading and MULTIPLE research papers. If you do not site even one line it is an automatic 0 and strike 1 and strike 2 is automatic F in class and you will be reported. The lectures are also very fast.
Should've been an easy A but she loves the thrill of making students suffer. Those long papers she assigns will drain you and her midterm was ridiculously long. her extra credit requires you to do stem fair projects, essays on seminars you must attend, or cooking. they all require so much time as if this is the only class Im taking! DONT TAKE HER
Pretty strict about Chicago style and citing your sources... but she offers extra credit. There are a few papers but they're short. She'll make you work for the A.
Talks the whole class, the tests are long and there are no study guides to help you. Gives weekly quizzes that involve long readings only to answer like 2 questions. Her chicago style rules are annoying and takes points off for stupid things. If you ask questions she'll make you feel stupid she takes her class so serious when its only history
I liked Winters as a professor. She doesn't take attendance which is cool but if you don't show up to class you will miss important material and won't do well. She's annyoingly strict about the time you turn you essays in. Assigns very long readings and makes you analyze everything. If you're looking for an easy course, find a different professor.
Weekly quizzes based on lectures for that week AND the weekly reading. She does not accept any late work whatsoever and will not allow retries on anything. She teaches the class very well and is very professional about things. You'll need to type 5 papers throughout the semester but thats the most work you'll get. Go to class and the tests are easy
Not an easy A. You'll have to retain lots of information. Final & midterm have short answer questions you must answer in paragraphs along w/ multiple choices too. Shes nice but very strict. No late work is accepted. Gives weekly quizzes and long readings. Your note taking skills are vital for passing this class as powerpoints are not informative.
She was so enthusiastic about history which made the lectures fun. She assigns a lot of papers but they are all short. There is only a midterm and a final and they're pretty easy. She is so so sweet. I highly recommend her
i dont think she is aware that she is teaching 101 class, way too much essays and you must take notes or you will fail as midterms and finals are mainly based off notes.
Best Professor! Absolutely take her class if you can.
Prof Winters is the best! I never liked history before I took her class. There are a lot of essays but they aren't hard. She helped me with the document analysis and she helped me write an outline which was super helpful. I never got an A in history before and I owe it all to Prof Winters!
Want to fail? take Dr. Winters. She's a very tough grader and she gives tons of work. Through the semester you'll have to do five research papers, weekly quizzes, midterm, and final. While other classes would only have a midterm and a final. Also, her class is very boring. Trust me and don't take her.
Worst decision I have ever made! guys avoid her! she's literally the hardest professor at NOVA. I'm graduating this semester and so far I took "A" in all my classes except this one! I received a "C" with soooo much effort!!!! Also, you have to be a writing machine in order to keep up with the notes! STAY AWAY!
"Tough grader?" kek. Gave online quizzes and pulled all of the questions on the final directly from the quizzes. Five one page papers that took like 20 mins to do. Straight up GAVE us the essay question on the exam. Oh and I got extra credit for watching 300. Got a 97 in the class. If you belong in college, this class is easy.
Do not take her unless you are absolutely passionate about writing and love taking notes! She gives lots of extra credit but each require so much time. But if you're a parasite and dont work and revolve your whole existence around her class you'll get an A.
Took this class thinking wow she seems like a great professor she's got great reviews and everything. I dont even trust rate my professor anymore bc she's honestly the worst prof i've had at nova! I worked so hard only to receive a C. I got A's and B's but theres one C on my transcript and its from this class. Avoid her.
I hated every history class I ever had to take, but loved this class because of her enthusiasm in teaching the material. Her lectures are interesting and she's pretty funny. She grades papers on accuracy more than composition, so as long as you get the information correct, the essays should be fairly easy. I would definitely take her class again.
Dr. Winters is an astounding professor - she is quick to help students succeed but holds them to high standards. She is very clear in her expectations of her students and will give you every opportunity to succeed. If you don't make the effort, expect to get a poor grade. She is engaging and makes lectures a joy to attend - a top notch teacher!
Her class is really interesting and I don't normally like history. She puts readings online so you don't have to buy a textbook which is good if you're trying to save some money. I like that. Kind of a tough grader but do what she asks and you'll be fine. Already signed up for her 102 next semester.
Dr. Winters is such a tough grader and unfair. You put so much work in her research papers and she wouldn't even appreciate it. Want my advice? don't take her unless you want to fail (:
I warned everyone I know not to take this class. I write essays very well and received all A's on her 4 essays. I forgot all about the 5th one and had it a day late, which she refused to accept and that resulted in a full letter grade drop. That's just absurd. I worked so hard and she was so unforgiving. My GPA suffered because of this. AVOID HER.
Do not take this professors class, there are better and professors on this campus. I repeat do not take this professors class.
I really liked History until I had it with her. She's tough and discouraging. She makes it hard for you to go up to her for help because all she will say is "sorry, you're screwed" She is not understanding, at all. She also does not give you study guides or anything for exams.
There is a ton of reading, there's no doubt about it. But she gives clear expectations and there is a TON of extra credit opportunity. One very long paper that's worth 30% of your grade in total, but you have months to work on it.
She's a really good teacher and shows that she cares. You have weekly quizzes that are based off of lectures and readings, but they're easy. You only have two tests and one project. She can be a tough grader but overall its a pretty easy class!
Professor Winter's seems to have a genuine interest in what she teaches. That being said if the class doesn't reflect the same optimism or there's not a lot of participation shes more than happy to threaten you with a pop quiz. The workload's very manageable but if you don't follow the rubric's word for word the penalty is a letter grade or two.
Friendly enough, but won't give you the time of day the second the due date passes for an assignment. Insane amount of extra credit so there is that, but if you've got other options don't take Professor Winters' class.
This professor has no level of sympathy and would rather give F's than hear out someone's situation. She brags about how tough a grader she is. Also she is very biased in grading she will give two people two different grades for the same work. One good thing to say is that she is very knowledgeable and passionate.
No idea why she doesn't have a great review. Haven't taken 101, but I'm surprised. Women in World History was amazing with her, & not difficult. Weekly journal, not too much reading (all online, no textbook) (& you'll keep up in class if you're behind). She is devoted to the subject, truly knowledgeable, & cares about her students.
I took class in the fall '15 better late than never. The class is interesting would recommend if you like history. The little quiz things that are online are straight from the lecture, exams are non cumulative and she gives extra credit. The only thing I didn't like about her was that I miscited something and she gave me a zero, told me I cheated.
What a horrible freaking professor! She does the absolute most when it comes to grading!!!! I really pushed myself in the class and tried really hard, and it didn't even pay off, because the professor was not understanding at all!!!! You should avoid her because she's hard and mean. Simple as that!
She makes history interesting like watching a movie. I learned a lot about history and I will minor in it. She's the best professor!
After 2 weeks this is already the best class I've had at Nova. I hope it stays that way, and even if the history gets tough she's said she'll help any student which I like. I like that I didn't have to buy a textbook.
If your a very punctual and independent student this class will be better off the bat. Also loads of extra credit. Guidelines are everything in this class and if you deviate just a little and your down a grades. The main issue is the professor is incredible condescending when you are in need of her help. I'm baffled shes gotten this many 5.0's.
This class made history my favorite subject again. I recommend this class because it challenges your thinking and opens your eyes to the world around you. At least thats what it did for me!
Professor Winters is strict, but I learned so much in her class it was worth it. She doesn't grade attendance. You have weekly quizzes, two tests, and one essay. You get grades back quickly, which is super rare. I recommend her class, but you have to work.
I enjoyed her class. If you like to skip class you'll be missing some info but she doesn't take off points so thats a plus. Also doesn't require participation which is ideal for people who don't want to talk much in class. She did make us read a lot tho which could get crazy sometimes.
Professor Winters is always prepared and gives her best during lectures. The expectations are straight forward. A lot of people procrastinate and complain about the work load but if you distribute it throughout the semester, it is a breeze. Exams are straight from weekly quizzes. Professor Winters recognizes effort students put in. She's great
STUDENT BEWARE! She makes history insanely tougher than it should be. Weekly quizzes, ****TONS OF ESSAYS****, 20 page readings for hw every class, mid term, and final. I don't think I've written these many essays for any of my english classes! I pushed myself so hard for this class, and it was nearly impossible to do decent! Only C I "earned" ;- (
professor w has a very organized class and makes you work. she has a three part research assignment which takes up most of the semester you get 3-4 weeks to do each. on my final paper i got a 94 but she cut off 19 points giving me a 75 for being 15 words short of the papers requirement. she is a very strict grader, but an ok professor. still beware
Ms. Winters is a nice professor, she is very enthusiastic, and loves her job. Her lectures are extremely long and boring. Attendance is Mandatory!!!! there are also alot of essays to write, i recommend her if you aren't taking other essay heavy classes.
Prof. Winters is an amazing teacher, she's very knowledgeable on history and all aspects. Lectures can be pretty long but that's history for you! Assignments are big projects, group work at times, assigned readings, and journal/discussion board entries. If you have a passion for history, I really would suggest her, she's the best!
She's really nice, but all she does is talk and her powerpoints are not helpful at all. She counts attendance, and she makes you write these essays instead of taking tests, you have to get a total of 400 points each essays are like 25, 50 or 100 points but she is a really tough grader. She's tough.
My class was a Hybrid class, so we met in person once a week and the rest was online. Dr. Winters is knowledgeable and passionate about history. Participation was for a grade. Tough grader. Responds in a timely manner. Posts grades quickly.
Dr. Winter's lectures were very easy to follow , comprehensive, and usually interesting. I also like how she's very open to class discussion during the lectures, constantly involving the class by asking them about specific points. I also found the appointments I had with her during office hours helpful when I was writing my essays.
really nice professor. her lectures are good and there is a lot of discussion which makes for a really interesting class. shes really strict on deadlines so you better make sure you turn your stuff in on time. also attendance counts for points.
Ive taken Professor Winters three times while at NOVA (the most of any professor) and shes great. She wants you to succeed in her class and is willing to help you in whatever way she can, though she is a stickler for the rules and will rarely bend them. If you attend her class, do your work and raise your hand at least once a class. Youll pass.
Jennifer Winters is nice and teaches well. But she gives a lot of papers to write and really a tough grader. She counts attendance for points. If you don't have prior experience in history writing, don't take this class.
Her class can be pretty easy if you don't have a lot going on. Her deadlines were very difficult with my busy schedule, and she does change her class every semester. However, she does respond to emails, is very helpful, and is very understanding when you have a valid reason for missing class.
Stay away
Just help yourself by staying away from this torture.I gave my best but my efforts was in vain.
She's a tough grader on essays, but her tests were the easiest of all my classes. Its open note, so if you take good notes you get an easy A. I procrastinated on the essays, so I probably have a B in the class. I don't know why people say shes hard.
She is a great professor. Her lectures are very interesting and she is a fair grader. There are 3 essays that are due at the end of the semester and 2 open note exams. You have weekly quizzes and attendance counts for points to boost your grade.
Dr. Winters is a harsh grader and gives you tons of homework. I understand having to do a reading for the upcoming class, but to have pop quizzes, 15 hours worth of online quizzes, and 2 exams (all write in) was nothing short of painful. If you read this review and still decide to take her class, I have one thing to say to you........... Good luck.
I enjoyed the way she taught history as if it were a story. Her stories and humor helped make the lesson more enjoyable and memorable. If I take another history course, it will be with Professor Winters.
I absolutely love Professor Winters! Its obvious she loves history. It makes it easier to learn when you have a professor who is dedicated to the course and shows enthusiasm when students ask questions. With her, no question was a bad question. I also loved that this was a hybrid course. I could work ahead of time and at my own pace.
I feel like I know more about history now than I ever have. I learned more during the 16-week hybrid course than I did during my past 17 years combined. All the assignments were worth it, and she is a charming, hilarious, knowledgeable, and passionate individual. Cannot recommend her enough.
This was the first NOVA class where I felt like I learned something. It wasn't about memorization with stupid homework assignments. You had to think critically and it was tough but soooo worth it. Her class will help me with my other classes.
Worst professor Ive ever encountered. Sit down and all the class is, is a long lecture that makes little to no sense. Be ready to teach yourself the material. Does not go out of the syllabus and she will even admit that she is an extreme rule follower. If you submit a quiz 10 seconds later then midnight be ready to see your zero. DO NOT TAKE HER
The class is easy but the tests are hard even though you can use your notes. Even if you don't do good on the tests you can still get an A or B. I failed the midterm but got an A in the class. Take this class if you don't do good on tests
Toughest grader ever.
If you make an effort to pay attention and do at least half of the readings, you'll do fine in this class. She's a super nice person and is happy to work with you on whatever you're having issue with. She cares about why events happened, not just that they occurred. If you're having problems with her, it's really your own fault.
I took Dr. Winters class last semester and I have a new appreciation for history. I am a better writer and critical thinker because of her. Her class made my current classes easier, because I am more confident in my research and writing skills. Take her class!
You will have pop quiz if you can't answer the questions she will mark you as not attending class! You will write tons of research papers and she it's not unlikely that you will recieve a 0 for a grade or perhaps a 30 or 40 points for each paper you do. You much collect 300 points in order to pass. She is way too tough , I don't know why
The class was not what I expected. Professor Winters really challenged the class and it made use critical thinking to analyze history from history aspects. Dr Winters is really knowledgeable and I can really say that I learn something from her every class. A really good class that I truly enjoyed.
I like this class because the instructor made it very simple. Do the readings, go to class, put in effort and you would do great. Great lectures and very helpful instructor.
Even though there was a lot of work, I felt like it all had a purpose, so I didn't really mind doing it so much. I never felt like I was wasting my time or money by being in class. I also enjoyed and appreciated Dr. Winters good presence and dedication in giving us as much feedback as possible in order for us to grow and succeed in the class.
Ms Winters was super kind and passionate about what she taught, my HIS 111 was a hybrid course so most of our assignments were online but they were all super straightforward and easy to get done if you are self sufficient. She's great!
She's not very clear and will punish you for not understanding something even though it's totally new information
I loved this class. I liked how the way she talked and described events you felt that you were actually there, which felt pretty cool. Its a lot of reading, but totally worth it. Her enthusiasm is contagious.
Professor Winters explained subjects well, answered all questions, and encouraged students to participate in discussions by asking our opinions and asking questions. The unit quizzes helped recap what was learned in each unit, and everything we had read was easy to answer in exams.
Professor Winters is nice just remember to SHOW UP AND DO THE WORK if you cant/wont you will fail and stay away from any of her 6 weeks courses. Shes not a teacher who stays on track so you may need to pull her back in. Over all shes nice you just need to have a passion for history or learning to succeed with her.
The only way to pass her class is if she likes you. The majority of my classmates dropped out through half the semester since it was near impossible for them to pass. Each attendance is worth 10 points. Heavy lectures and goes through the material to fast for a 16-week course.
I liked being in the classroom for this course. Professor Winters has a lot of knowledge on the subjects we covered and was always more than happy to answer questions even if they deviated from the lesson a little. I really liked being able to use my notes on tests as it made me learn how to take better notes.
I was disappointed in this class. Prof. winters assigns A LOT of homework and are due random days throughout the week, sometimes at 11:59pm and other times randomly which can make things confusing. Learn everything at home by reading the textbook. she didn't lecture. Quizzes at beginning of class so that if you are 5 minutes late you get a zero.
Dr. Winters is a great professor. She will not cut you slack if you don't show up unannounced (most of my class who stopped showing up started to fail) It is alot of reading but everything you do is open notes. She does knowledge checks and requires you to do up to 300points worth of essays. She is a reasonable professor, dont take her for granted.
Very nice, but the worst grader ever, please don't take her , she does to many essays and to many quizzes. Exams are open note but if you state the point of the question and don't give her what she wants she will give you are fat zero.
Best professor at NOVA! I learned more in this class than any other class in my two years here. There's alot of reading and writing, but if you do the work you'll pass. She's really nice and helpful and funny.
This class is not a easy A. Its a fun A. You will learn a lot and pay attention because of her excitement in the classroom. She requires you to read before coming into class but its not hard. She quizzes you on the reading, so you have to do it. She been one of my favorite teachers so far.
Great professor! She gives lots of chances to make up points if you mess up an essay.
Great teacher, if you put in the effort you will get an A. Enjoyed every minute of her class.
Ms. Winters assigns a lot of homework for a hybrid class, but it's easy discussion board work. There are three small essays and two long essays, and those are hard, but she will help you if you visit her at the office. I did bad on the first one, but it was alot easier after that. The best part of class is when she lectures. Group work is okay.
Very interesting women with a vast knowledge of history but her class was very hard for a 100 level. Makes you do papers that you have no clue how to. A pre rec is English 111 and there you only learn Mla so how are students expected to already know how todo Chicago style. Lecture is shaped around what the students want to learn so thats neat.
Prof Winters gives AMAZING lectures, but the workload is TOUGH. As of Spring 2019, she had a system where she offers students lots of essay topics to write about (say 1200pts worth) and you can pick which essays to do until you total up to 300. If you do poorly on one essay, you can just write some more to get to 300, but don't miss the due dates!
The class is easy, but to avoid the extreme anger that she causes I would suggest to avoid her as a whole. She seeks to make student's lives harder, to validate herself. Her professional behavior is atrocious. Avoid at all costs.
Professor Winters is very condescending and lacks the basic human compassion that would be assumed everyone is born with. I have sat in class and pondered if she has the goal to make the students lives harder. Lacks zero understanding that her students most likely are only taking this class for credit, and have other classes in their schedules.
If you want to fail history she is a great professor, after midterm half, the class drops out, it's for a reason.
Dr Winters is the best professor at NoVA! Even with the switch to learning online, the class meetings are fun and engaging. She is super well organized which helps right now, and she's always available during office hours. I'll take HIS 102 with her next semester!!!
Terrible teacher. I hated that class. She has an unnecessary attitude when she talks to you and is very rude. She expects way too much from her students in a level 1 class. Never taking her again and dont suggest anyone else to.
Class is straight forward. Open note tests, loads of essay options, flexibility with essay due dates, loads of reading, and a focus on critical thinking not memorization. Engaging class and fun even at 8 am.
Prof. Winters is an amazing lecturer. Although the class is online you still should attend since the attendance assignments (worth 35%) are only available at a specific time during class hours. 3 open-notes exams which honestly weren't hard if you did your readings and pay attention during lecture. There are 2 essays and extra credit (at the end).
I took this class first semester and it was one of the hardest classes I've ever taken. It is clear she knows what she's talking about, but her homework was too hard for me. She assigned multiple essays due at the end of the semester and no one in class knew how to write them. I took history again with another professor and got a much higher grade.
She seemed nice at the start but she is so demanding and asked way to much of everyone. She had crazy reading assignments every class and if you miss one class good luck for the rest of the semester do yourself a favor and get out of her class.
The readings were plenty and tough, but she is an amazing lecturer so she makes the topics easier to understand. Exams are on lockdown browse, paragraph answer form, but open note, so take good notes! Attend class, listen to her, take notes, & you'll be fine. She's very sweet, & it was nice learning from someone who's passionate about the subject.
These are the averages for every major assignment in Dr. Winters HIS101 class I am currently enrolled in. 59%, 66.7%, 55.4%, 63.6%, 52.2% The numbers speak for themselves I would advise not enrolling with Dr. winters. She knows a lot about everything she teaches but the assignments are way too difficult for a level 1 class.
While Professor Winters is very educated in her field, I believe that the grading is a bit harsh. She definitely knows what she is doing but the workload and grading are overwhelming. I don't suggest taking her unless you are willing to challenge yourself. She is really nice but very strict on grading assignments and exams.
Professor Winters is a very sweet person however she is quite the harsh grader, I believe she means good but she assigns very very hard and heavy homework, quizzes and papers. If you are up for the challenge then she is good for you.
She is a good professor and tries to help everyone. But the class is heavily based on writing; so if you do not like document analysis and critical thinking, rethink the class.
I am a little confused why Dr. winters rating looks so good. Maybe it is because she is a good professor in the classroom but online she's about as bad as it gets. I am going to end up failing her class and my grade is better than the class average. That should tell you everything you need to know.
Beware of this professor's organization! She will assign the classes hw and reading to be due the day BEFORE next class, where she will go over and 'teach' the lecture. Her lectures don't relate to the reading a good portion of the time and go off on tangents that relate insignificantly to the reading and class. You will have to teach yourself!
RUN. does NOT have realistic expectations for a freshman level class. Class averages for assignments normally feel around 50-65%. She has none of the flexibility youd want with a freshman level teacher. Great, interesting lectures, dumpster fire course work. She functions as if this a 300-400 level class, not 100
Doctor Winters makes history fun. It was the only class that didn't put me to sleep. I looked forward to class every week. There is a lot of reading, but the schedule is easy to follow so you know when everything is due. I recommend her class.
Please do not take her. She has an unrealistic view of how things are supposed to be and if you dont do it her way then youll fail. She gave my essay a F for little small errors. Not understanding at all and grades super hard.
Professor Winters is one of the hardest graders ever! She expects a lot from you, if you are looking for a challenge she's the one for you.
The class was hard at first and had a lot of reading, but Winters is super helpful. She responds to email quickly and met with me once a week to help me with my reading and writing. I'm doing well in this class and it feels like an accomplishment. She really cares about her students and wants us to succeed.
I would not recommend this prof for incoming freshmen or people who dont want to experience a semester-long panic attack. Crazy expectations as far as in-depth knowledge and gives no where near enough time for tests. AWESOME lecturer & super smart but yikes when it came to coursework
Heavy use of the textbook coupled with unclear expectations on papers and being expected how to write near perfect history papers allow this class to become one giant semester long panic attack.
Don't understand the negative reviews. Class is easy. Show up and do the homework. You use your notes and readings on the tests, and she'll look at your paper before you turn it in if you ask. The only way to not get an A is to not show up.
Please avoid. It is unlike any other course I've taken in college. A very difficult professor with unrealistic expectations. I had to witdraw because despite trying my best on every assignment and never missing a class, I was still in danger of failing. I repeated the course the next semester with a different professor and got an A.
From straight A to get a D with this professor. Online class with no support. Did all project, discussion and homework. She ask for too much for a 6 weeks class.
She is a very. Very. Very. Picky grader and shows no remorse on what you did wrong on the tons of essays you have to write in this class. Annoying FInal Project options. Makes you read a lot on the textbook. Expects you to know whats going on most of the time.
I respect the fact that prof. Winters makes you work for your grade. If you show up to class and pay attention along with turning in your work, you will be okay. Shes funny and makes class entertaining and really knows what shes talking about. I dont recommend taking her class if you expect an A to get handed to you though.
very kind and informed professor. but unrealistic expectations for an entry level course, if you would like a semester panick then this is the course for you...
Professor WInters is not the best professor I have ever had. Good amount of load work but if you did not do anything right from the rubric, you get points of. Her exams were almost the same as the study guide. I thought this was more of an English class than History. When it came to homework, projects, and exams, you had to write loads of paragraph
Lectures have almost nothing to do with the work. All homework is essays or projects. Classwork has no points associated with them, it's more of busy work. Doesn't regrade. Each essay with worth 75 points and if it isn't formatted exactly the way she wants it , you'll get half points off.
Took the class online, all assignments with grades were papers. In-class assignments had no grade attached. Papers were focused around things not even taught in lectures. Doesn't regrade. Lecture topics are chosen by students, not her. If you're taking this for the credit, find a different prof. Teaches better to students interested in the course
Take her class if you're into history, find another prof if you're taking this as a requirement. Tough grader, no regrades, all work is essays, high expectations for a 101 course.
She there is a lot of work but was long as you do it you will be fine I got an A on her class and I just turned in assignments and show that I kinda know what Im talking about
Professor Winters is the best teacher at NoVa. She really cares about her students. We met every week to make sure I understood the topics and assignments. It seems like a lot of work but its not hard and she'll help you if you need it.
Shes a tough grader and goes through her lectures very fast like super fast
Professor Winters is an excellent, kind with students, and helpful on assignments. She is very understanding of individual circumstances when you speak with her. Indeed she is very interested in historical topics, and is pleased to have students ask questions and be involved in historical topics. She cares for students. I recommend Pro. Winters
The professor is a good professor, but although the work is tough. I had to drop the course because it wasn't for me and the work espically the essays overwhelmed and and I'm someone who likes to write and history. The essay prompt where hard that even a professor couldn't help me write because he was lost himself.
Nice lady but quite unforgiving when it came to large assignments. Essay Batches will cause you to fail if you don't do EXACTLY what she asks for (which is like a page of niche requirements).
This professor was awful and really rude with her responses to emails about assistance, clarification and questions pertaining to assignments. Directions to her assignments are unclear and disorganized. Extra credit can not be submitted on the same day as normal assignments. Her assignments require lot of reading (20+ pages, her notes etc).
I took this class 2 years ago (fall 2020) and until now I am aware of this site. When I took Dr. Winters class, I noticed that she is very enthusiastic about history, but really tough. I did need history for credit but dropped out because it was just too difficult for me. If you really like history, go for it, but if not, this class is not for you.
Jennifer Winters is the best online professor at Nova. My schedule is insane and she even meet with me at nights and weekends. History is my worst subject but the class was fun and with Jennifer Winters help I got an A. Take her class if you need extra help.
Do yourself a favor and take ANY OTHER history class with ANY OTHER professor at NVCC. Definite stick up her butt, terrible lecturer, tough grader.
Grading method is convenient for people that work on their own time. Fast responder and enjoys the subjects she teaches.
Don't take her, she counts the smallest things as plagiarism and her lectures are so long and boring.
Professor Winters is amazing. If you are hardworking and take this class seriously, you'll get a 99% like I did. 2 weekly discussion boards and responses are assigned a week along with periodical assignments and work on the major research paper. I enjoyed the class so much as she is so passionate about what she teaches and so sweet. A+ professor.
Graded by 500 point system and you start at 0 points, so your grade can only go up. Many assignments given have creative freedom and the more creative your submission, the more points you'll get. Only one due date for all assignments at end of semester. Overall, great professor! Definitely would take her again!
I really liked this class. professor was responsive and answered all of my questions. There are weekly discussions, but you aren't required to do all of them. If you do an extra one it's extra credit. There is also a final project that includes a few assignments that build up to the final project. Stay on top of that and you should def get an A.
I cannot recommend Professor Jenifer to any future students. Her tough grading and lack of support made the learning experience in her class a disheartening one. As a student, I believe we deserve instructors who genuinely care about our success and are willing to guide us through the learning process. she felt short of those expectations.
Her class is the first humanites class I've had to respect to get an A, and I appreciate that. She is, however, curt and sometimes blatanly rude. I appreciate her feedback and intellect very much, but her conduct and rigidity can make the class frustrating and confusing. To get an A you MUST follow her instructions perfectly, which can be hard.
She is absolutely the toughest grader I have seen in a while, no idea how she has positive reviews. Nothing of her grading was consistent, it seemed every time I tried to incorporate what she wanted me to improve, the goalposts changed and I would get knocked down for something different.
I took this course over summer online. This class has potential, but she makes it beyond frustrating for even the most inspired learners due to her communication and grading. I hope she continues to teach the same material, but treats her students with more care.
The professor has quite a bit of attitude and is generally not that fun to be around. However, she was absolutely willing to help on work and probably does want the best for every student. Avoid unless you are very confident in your ability to put together impressive work, cuz you're gonna need it. FYI idk what her lectures are like.
I would rate this professor poorly due to their unclear instructions and inadequate preparation for proctored exams. Professor Winters' failure to provide clear guidance has left students struggling to process an excessive amount of information within a limited time frame during proctored exams, this is unfair and detrimental to higher learning!
I mean, she teaches well, and she makes the environment of the class pretty good. But, she's a terrible grader. She wants everything to be perfect and is always unpleased with everything. Makes every tiny issue a plagiarized issue which is annoying.
She teaches great. And I did make a few mistakes in my assignments but that doesn't mean she's gonna make every small thing into plagiarism or AI. It's so annoying because I haven't used it. She's also a pretty average to bad grader, she wants everything to be perfect and won't guide you properly or even put an effort into teaching such stuff.
I took HIS 101 and it was probably one of the easiest classes I've taken. You'll have to read a decent amount, but the textbook was free. The lectures are fun and theirs usually a little group activity. She lets you choose which assignments you want to do from a variety of choices that she gives you as long as you get enough points.
She's the best professor at Nova! Her class was easy but I learned a lot. There are lots of assignment options and you can keep doing work until you get an A. It can be a lot of work but its not hard.If you want to learn and get an A, take her class.
Grading system is # of points, not performance, on a variety of assignments you can choose from, all online. NOTHING is done in class but you still got to attend because you cant miss more than 2 or 3 before she auto fails you. If you dont procrastinate its not even 10 hours of work for the entire semester. i procreastinaed tho xdd
This class was hybrid, easy, and very forgiving. She gives you about 5,000 points worth of assignments and you choose which ones you want to do. You only need 500 points to get an A, and the midterm and final are optional. I had 460 points (which was a B), got 60/100 on my final, which was added and had me end the class with 520 points (an A).
I was worried going into this course since it was a 7 week zoom class, but she made it as tolerable as possible! She had us do weekly packbacks + document analysis and group work. Theres a 10 page final, but she walks you through the steps. As long as you do the work, you'll be alright
Professor Winters' HIS101 class is a mixed bag. While the grading system offers flexibility, the unclear instructions and strict grading can be frustrating. However, the lectures are engaging, and utilizing tools like unstuck AI can help manage the workload. Overall, a decent class if you stay on top of things.
**** I thought this class would be interesting since I enjoyed my last history class but it was awful! grading is EXTREMELY harsh. She gives low scores often. I have taken hard classes anatomy&phys 1&2 passed w/ B's, so I'm used to a lot of work & studying, but her class was so difficult. The final was VERY hard. The online book is so confusing.
You decide what grade you get. 500 points is an A, and there are plenty of assignments that are easy. She is funny and nice.
I would never retake this class with this professor again because I had to drop it. Grades critically and you are expected to read for hours daily to stay ahead.
What a fabulous instructor, she's one of your best! Kind, knowledgeable, enthusiastic and clear. She's also fair and reasonable. Do the work and you'll nail it. Simple as that. Lecture heavy and intense.
she's strict with her 6 unexcused absences. She does not excuse absences; it could be any emergency, like a car accident lol and she does not care. I sent her an email regarding my seventh absence because my mental health has been off the charts; I have a physician and psychiatric note. She declined and told me to withdraw the class.
There is a lot of reading and writing to do but if you reach out to her by email or to meet her during her office hours, she is more than happy to help you. She was great!!!!
Easy A. 500 points by doing different assignments.
I had only 50 points for 4 months, an F, then I locked in and completed the assignment, and I got an A in a month. Honestly, lock in and do the assignment, it's easy. She's so chill, just make sure to go to class because if you miss more than 6, then you failed but it's chill every time you go to class, so don't worry you can pass this class.
She is one of the WORST professors I've ever had. She counts the tiniest thing as AI or plagiarism. TERRIBLE/HARSH grader, wants everything to be perfect, does not care about her students and has high expectations for an entry level class. I dropped the class because it was very overwhelming. If you want to fail history, then she is a great choice.
she made sure we got the support we needed from the beginning and really cared about us learning and growing in her class. One different thing was her grading system. Instead of the standard percentages or pass/fail, she used point-based system where your grade was based on how many points you accumulated throughout the semester. i got an A
Easy class, just do the assignments and you will be fine. She is not a tough grader; she helps her students all the time. Completed all 500 credit points by just doing her easy assignments and not taking any tests.
This class was pure chaos. The grading is so harsh it feels pointless to even try, and the workload is ridiculous for an intro class. Every assignment feels like a setup, and the exams are impossible without memorizing the whole textbook. I dropped because the class was unbearable. Save your sanity and run.
