she reads directly from her notes like she doesnt know what shes talking about. As well she doesnt engage the class or try to make things interesting. She talks wayyyy too fast
Talks REALLY fast and read directly from notes with her head down most of the time. TA seems hard and class isn't curved!! Lots of material to know. Exam consists of m/c short answer and long answer
Completely useless class, she talks very fast and is incomprehensible at times. Class is basically straight from the textbook and very uninteresting. Teaching style is very dull, and midterms are incredibly difficult for an intro course but at the same time they baby you in the tutorials. Not good.
At the beginning she is difficult to follow because she talks fast, but you learn to get used to it. As long as you study for the exam you'll do allright...the midterm is definitely pretty hard though. She seems to know a lot, but teaches exactly to the textbook, so do the readings.
she just doesn't know how to teach! you can never catch on to what she is saying or anything. her exams are super hard for an intro course and her marking style is horrible. she never clarifies what is going on and is never clear at all. just overall not a good prof.
She talks so fast that she hands out traffic lights for students to signal her to slow down! Although she seems to know her stuff, lectures were all her notes (which were helpful though!). It's dry material to get through for 2hr lectures but its not horrible. 4 papers in total to do, midterm and final.
i wish i took this course at kwantlen where the profs there do a better job than this one! What a waste.
A really good teacher! She is straight forward and if you do the readings and pay attention you will do good. The midterms are tricky, but overall a good course, lots of information.
useless. Teaches next to nothing, expects you to get ALL your learning from reading the text. Readings are ridiculously long for a 100 level class, and the questions she chooses for the exam require excessive detail or you get nothing. Stay away. I took 103 for interest and to help my grade...so far I have a C+, and even that's lucky.
Jennifer is extremely helpful and genuinely interested in the topic. Exams are challenging, but not impossible, and she offers bonus marks to up your grade. Will evaluate if question is unfair and eliminate it. Unfortunately, she chooses the worst TAs imaginable, who mark extremely low on the term paper and are generally useless.
Shes an absolutely terrible prof, goes super fast, gives vague descriptions of what to expect on the final such as "everything learned so far" and if u ask her anything in depth she laughs and says "oh i can't tell you that" even tho the prof is supposed to help students focus attention on certain aspects. She sucks, the worst prof ever. Fin.
TALKS TOO FAST, UNCLEAR, TALKS ON AND ON... and on...and on.. not much interest showed towards crim 220, so take it with Barry if you can! u won't regret it!
lectures are boring and she talks too fast.. she doesn't clarify the material and just rushes through the notes..also FOUR papers to do in total!! she's nice in person but for the course and ur marks.. dont take it with her.. has a nice/good TA though.
This is the first and the last course I will ever take with Jennifer Wong. I do not think she is suitable to be a teacher and she is probably better off being a research
Too much work! and all that work for a low grade!
Even if you attend every class and participate she doesn't give full marks for participation; refuses to clarify assignments properly; shows preference to favorite students; uses impossible to understand texts, too many tests, horrible course, a lot of students hated this class, is biased on essays
If this course will be offered again do not take it. The worst course I have ever taken. The no lectures part might appear to some, but then we had no clue about the material which she tested us on every week. Endless/useless class discussions without feedback. I have never spent so much time on a paper, and I have never received such low mark.
WHAT A TERRIBLE TEACHER! COULD HER EXAMS BE ANY HARDER? Especially for an into class. Do NOT take this class with Jennifer Wong. You will study as hard as you can and still fail the exam. For goodness sakes, half the class failed the midterm! I am not looking forward to the final. I finished h.school w/a 4.0 GPA from one of the leading schools..
Honestly, the person below is an idiot. Her exams are tough, but very very fair. There are no suprise questions, and if you study there is absolutely no reason why you wouldn't do well. I didn't study as much as I should have and still got a good grade. I actually really enjoy her class, and find her to be one of the best profs I have had..
personally,i think she is a good prof...
Dr. Wong may speak fast but she sure is not completely useless. I think the ones who find her hard are the one who do not attend class as no lectures notes are posted. i do agree midterms and papers are difficult, she seems to test a lot of detailed information from EVERY chapter. although the material is quite boring, i feel she did supply us with
A lot of boys thought she was hot but i thought she talked tooo fast!
she is a good prof.. Her exams are little bit hard, but if you read textbook and lecture notes, you will do fine.
I took her 103 class in fall 2009. I have to say, for a 100 level course, it's pretty hard. The exams cover far too much material, and the readings are ridiculously long. Right now I have to take crim 220, and I'm scared as hell I'll get Jennifer Wong again. LIKE REALLY SCARED because I need a good gpa for when I apply for exchange.
i took the course last year and it was the best crim course. Tests are really fair; all questions are directly from lec. notes and textbook.
Had this class a while ago, this is my 3rd year in university and without a doubt she has the worst lecture/notes of any of the profs i have ever had
Midterm was fair with all questions coming from text or lecture. Includes bonus questions. Only concern is the lack of time for the amount of written questions she gives.
She's not horrible, but I'm taking her class right now, it is pretty hard for a first year course. TONS of notes, tests are on all notes and course pack. Tests are very tedious when it comes to detail, so remember it all and she gives you a short amount of time, especially for the midterm considering the amount of questions.
The only thing I do not really like is that while copying down the notes she will discuss them, and I am not so great at multitasking so I will either neglect one or the other. She is a good teacher and really knows her stuff.
Professor who knows what she's talking about and is willing to work with you if you're willing to learn.
Talks very fast but knows her material inside and out. Exams are very difficult and the term-paper is not clear since TA and Prof have different expectations.
her exams are tough, you really have to know the material inside and out,i got a 90% on her midterm though, but it was not easy. She is very smart and knows what she's talking about, lecture is not borring, but its hard to write and listen to her explain at the same time. You also have to remember the experiments she talks about durring lecture
Unbelievable marking scheme. I am a third year student who had previous knowledge of most of the material.I felt I was doing well in this course until I got my marks back. I knew the material, I read the text, I studied for the test and my mark was WAY below expected. It's beyond me why a first yr class would have such a ridiculous marking scheme.
Term paper instructions were slightly confusing but the TA would clarify by email in depth. Term paper marking was also fairly generous. Both finals and midterms required a large amount of studying but everything did come from the notes or the coursepack. I loved how the TAs and Wong responded to emails in a timely fashion.
Good teaching but she doesn't post lecture slides and it makes it tough to listen and note take at the same time. Regardless, most of the exam material is from the text. Those who say that no matter how much you study you wont do well are wrong. I studied and got an A.
Great Prof! Only thing to complain about-talks very fast hard to copy notes and write down examples. Textbook was useful only for supplementary source of info FOCUS ON HER LECTURE NOTES 4 EXAMS! 20 pg paper-clear instructions very helpful USE OFFICE HOURS I did and ended up with an A! Very approachable if you visit her during office hours!
Jen Wong knows her material extremely well. Most of her classes are research methods and statistical analysis so don't expect to be on the edge of your seat. However, this material is essential if you plan on doing any type of study in the future. For tests, focus on her lectures. Assignments are fair. And as a bonus, she is absolutely gorgeous.
A lot of people may say she is hard, but they probably didn't study then. SHE LOVES LISTS, so if there is a list it will be on the tests. Tests are long but they are generally easy if you study and she takes out questions if the majority of the class didn't get them. Also she is SMOOOOKING hot all the guys agree with me. Interesting material also
I'm still taking the course but so far so good. Got an A on the midterm (memorize lists). She talks really, REALLY fast so it's good to take notes on a laptop during class. And you NEED to go to lectures as she doesn't post notes online. The assignments are time-consuming but reasonable. And btw (even as a girl) she IS super, SUPER hot. LOL.
Previous post: Sorry! I have her in Crim 220 (Surrey). Fall 2011
Also in 103 with her this semester as well. She gets a bad rep from a lot of students. Her tests are fair if you study, she gives lots of chances for bonus! oh, and LOVES LISTS, seriously if theres a list it will be on the exam.As well the 20 page paper may seem heavy, but her assignments lead into it. Also very approachable in office hours!
Not a bad class...very boring material but as long as you attend lecture and take good notes, you will do well. The 15 page paper wasn't too bad since the instructions are very detailed and clear. Would recommend her, she seems like a hard-ass, but is actually nice and not too difficult.
Talks extremely fast. Appears quite harsh, but is quite nice.
do the readings and show up. thats it. she is fair. shows students how to apply knowledge of policy making to real world.
Was scared to death before the first class cuz the reviews are so bad here. But she is awesome. Class was interesting enough for a research methods class. She is super helpful and nice. Attend all lectures and write everything=that's what will be on the exam. Amount of work might seem as large, but it's broken down pretty reasonable.
Intimidating at first, but she's actually super nice and really helpful in office hours. As long as you don't fall behind and put in the effort on the paper, you'll get a good mark, and focus on her lecture noted for the tests. Highly recommend her!
Horrible teaching methods. I can read slides on my own thank you. Difficult to do well in this class. Thinks very highly of herself.
Very intelligent and willing to help students. Gives clear instructions on how she will mark, even participation. She will also give reasonable explanations as to why you get certain marks, so very fair marker. Approachable! Don't be afraid to approach her because she is really nice and easy to talk to!
Super intelligent and well spoken. She's down to earth, but comes accross as unapproachable. If you do need or ask for her help, shes super warm and willing to help you!
People are accustomed to profs handing them As with no effort, but for Jennifer's classes you actually have to try. Her exams are very fair if you ACTUALLY prepare. Read the textbook, focus on her notes too, and you should get an A if you understand it. Paper instructions are very clear. 220's content is heavy & dry so go talk to her, she very nice
I don't know why people say she's so difficult... The course's content is awful and she makes it manageable thru her awesomeness. Try and get into her tutorial! Only downside is she will get to know your name and call on you in lecture! Amazing prof and so nice! She makes you work fr your grade but you learn a lot.
The content in this course really sucks, though she makes it crystal clear with plenty of examples. She's very nice and approachable despite her sometimes frightening demeanor. Midterm and final were exactly as she described; wasn't out to trick you or anything.
Absolute nightmare, A girl cried in the final... And worst TA ever
Firstly shes actually very attractive and this coming from a girl. And you can either do really well or really bad. I studied day before got an A on the midterm where as the girl beside me got an F and one got a C-. The class itself is interesting, and would def take it again.
I dont know why people say she is difficult. Honestly her exams are just straight up memorization of lists. She's nice and approachable, wanting you to do well. I don't get how you can study and fail her class, because honestly if you do its your own fault
Textbook wasn't necessary, overall made this course harder than it should be. TA was horrible. Can make/break you. Long lists, not really informative. Good luck.
Jennifer Wong was the best professor in my entire university years. Her grading criteria is clear (which means no favoritism) and she is super fair on the exams. Her class will reflect the amount of study you did. Do not expect to get an easy A- if you want A, go and study. Simple. She is an amazing prof who wants her students to learn.
Her lectures are quite interesting. Had her for my tutorial, she's hilarious. No need to remember stats and percentages, but it is helpful on the midterm and for your paper. Midterm was on textbook and slides (not posted online). If you study hard, you'll get a good mark. Midterm really tests what you know. Final based on post midterm material.
I was scared going into the course but I actually loved her class. The content is boring but she knows her stuff and gives good examples. She is very straight-forward and organized. Expect to actually work for an A. I wouldn't say she's hard, but very fair. Would take a course with her again.
If you have a chance to take 103 with Dr. Wong, do it! She's a great speaker and she knows a lot about her field of study. Her exams are very fair straight up memorization from her lectures. However, she doesn't post her lecture notes so class is mandatory. She never tests students on statistics in crime and the paper was very straight forward.
Best prof I have had at SFU. Don't let the amount of work for this class scare you away, I learned so much and Jeniffer is insanely smart! It is a heavy workload but it is manageable, don't expect an easy A! You actually have to do the readings for the weekly quizzes but she is super fair and always gives a chance for bonus marks. Best class ever!!
Easy enough class as long as you study. Pure memorization on the exams. You have to write down a lot during her lectures so I would recommend using a laptop.
Crim 220 wasn't too hard a class. The paper was daunting but the guidelines made it easy to complete. Lectures weren't very interesting, but exams were fair.
She gave an online exam, WHICH CONSISTED OF 80 QUESTIONS to be done in 40 MINUTES!! It was so unrealistic... 30 seconds per question. Come on now, no one can go through a question that quick. DO NOT take a class with her!! I DISREGARDED what ppl said on this site when i really wish i listened and never took her class.
This class was horrible. I would NEVER recommend it to anyone. She expects you to do an online midterm which is 25% of your grade 80 questions in 40 MINUTES. She is not fair the questions are long she picks the randomest things and tests you on it. She did not even give us any information for what to focus on. HORRIBLE I HATE THIS CLASS.
The workload of this course is not bad. However, the TA's mark very hard. They don't even give part marks. That obviously will make/break you with the midterm & final. Midterm is memorization of the lecture; u think its straight forward but it isn't. TA's are unfair and hard markers. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!! SAVE UR GPA!! TAKE WITH DIFF PROF!!
Her exams are really long and hard. Can easily fail if you didn't memorize the full lists of info. Make sure to memorize EVERYTHING she has on her slides. TA marks really hard but her tutorials are quite fun and easy marks
An average prof in every sense of the word. She doesn't give you a reason to hate the class, but doesn't really give you a reason to particularly enjoy it either. Excellent slide-narrator though, if that's what you're into. Tests are 75% short-answer, so you need to memorize a lot. Overall, not super difficult, but you have to put in some work.
Midterm was a bit unfair b/c 80 MC questions had to be answered in 40mins which does not give you enough time to properly read the questions. TA was not really helpful since she preferred answering questions on canvas discussion page, final was super hard since it was SA worth 70pts, recommend memorize all the notes especially anything with LISTS
Its a hard class, but TBH I really liked her. Do the readings & take notes!! If you take down the powerpoint slides and fill in the gaps with the readings, the exams are easy. Only focus on the material from lecture, ignore unmentioned info in the readings. Tests are 75% short answer, so study hard. Participation matters in tutorial.
I absolutely adore this prof. She seems strict in lecture but shes extremely approachable during her office hours. Overall, the material is pretty easy. Pure memorization. She likes to test on listing questions so if you memorize lists, you're pretty much set. Also, she gives about 15 marks worth of bonus points for the midterm and final!!
Crim 340 was a super interesting class that made me actually want to show up to class. It was my first seminar class and Dr. Wong was amazing! Very clear with what she expects on papers and projects. Although she does put a lot of emphasis on APA formatting, by the end of her class you'll be an APA master! Would definitely take her other classes!
Although the course was taken online, feedback and engagement with students could be used like other DE courses I have taken. The TA did all the work, and didn't even do a great job either. The course is heavily graded on exams and she doesn't even prepare you for them at all unless you are able to read and remember the entire textbook.
One of the best profs i ever had, if you write good notes you will pass easily.
Fantastic prof. Hardest workload I've taken, but by far the most worthwhile. Be prepared for 60-100 pages of reading a week, 5pg, 10pg, 25pg papers, and a 30min group presentation, plus weekly quizzes on readings. Seminar is discussion 95% of the time, and you need to teach yourself the readings mostly other than group activities.
took this class online but it was so difficult, TA did all the work and didnt even do a good job. tests were awful, questions were so specific and worth a lot. 10 page paper was not bad but you arnt graded on many things. would not take this prof again for anything.
She is very considerate and takes her students interests very seriously. She is a true gem
Super considerate
Best prof ever. Such a sweetheart for cancelling our exam in terrible weather conditions. From the class of crim 103, we love you Dr Wong!
A considerate and caring teacher, especially in comparison to the institution that employs her.
Personally I really enjoyed taking crim103 with Professor Wong. Her tests are easy if you study slides, the average was a D for the midterm & tests had to be remarked to move it up to a C- . Textbook is not needed as her tests are based mostly off of her slides. Shes very knowledgeable and class is super interesting. Slides not posted on canavas
A terrible prof. Would not recommend. Expect 60-100 pages of readings a week. Dont bother taking this course if youre planning on taking 4 classes.
Would not take another course with her
Probably the worst professor at sfu
Dr Wong is very difficult. Midterm had to be remarked because the grades were so low. Exams are very specific. Overall I wouldn't take a class with her again unless I wanted to fail. Should of curved the midterm!
Jennifer is a good prof and i enjoyed her lectures. Her tests are very hard and specific, but if you study hard you will be ok. The class itself is interesting. She does not release grades so you will not know yours marks.
Very knowledgeable. But doesnt post slides and expects first years to have an understanding of all material.
Such an amazing prof who makes lectures super interesting. Tests are easy if you make the time to study and learn the material.
The course material itself is pretty straightforward, expect to be memorizing lists and statistics for exams. As a non-Crim student, lectures could feel dry at times, but Jennifer attempts to keep students engaged through personal anecdotes. Tutorial participation was a breeze. Start your term paper early!!
Her lectures were boring and she was a decent professor. The exams were quite difficult since they focused on statistics and lists. The paper was kinda annoying, but maybe because I did it a week before it was due. Tutorials were pretty fun and easy.
First of all, the class average on the midterm was a D... Ive never failed a course at SFU. Jennifer Wong is the absolute worst, switch out of the class if you have her. The TA's were useless. The only positive thing I can say is the lectures weren't boring and they had good information. The tests were completely random - nothing from lectures.
Absolute worst class Ive ever taken. Take it with any other professor if possible. Class average of 250+ kids for our midterm was a D. Biggest regret of my life. This class brought my GPA down. Jennifer Wong treats this class as if it is a 300 level course. Tests are insanely hard and a 12 page paper at the end (which is marked hard).
Dr. Wong is extremely intelligent and professional and I always enjoyed her seminars that were full of really helpful classroom activities and discussions. You have to work hard for a good grade, but she's very clear in her expectations of students. Her course was probably the hardest I've ever taken, but I also enjoyed it immensely.
I highly recommend taking classes with Jennifer if you want to learn about real-life work in the criminal justice system. She expects a lot from her students, but she supplements that with really engaging seminars, great advice, and a good sense of humour.
Forces you to buy her textbook, which is just a bunch of journal articles from other authors. Smh.
Too difficult
I believe that negative comments on here about Dr. Wong are incredibly false. Dr. Wong is accommodating and although she does have quite a workload of material, it is all worth-while. You can actually learn critical skills from her class. If you are looking to learn, I recommend this prof as she is talented and logical in her teaching and grading.
I would not recommend taking her for a distance ed class. She would just post lecture notes that were from the book and did not engage with students in any other way. You basically have to teach yourself and the tests are pretty difficult and have nitpicky questions.
Class material wasn't tough but the prof had no live lectures or online video lectures. For each lecture she posts long detailed notes on the topics and that's all. You are only graded on 2 exams, discussion posts, and a term paper. You have only 45 minutes to complete each test that has 30+ multiple choice question and one long answer question.
This class was not hard if your willing to do some reading. I'm not sure why everyone is complaining I found the layout of this class easy and exams were not cumulative If you just read the modules and skim the textbook this class is not bad
This course had no recorded lectures or slides, just written notes summarizing the textbook and articles. Dr. Wong had little involvement in the course, besides some affirming comments about discussion posts and about the midterms 65% average. The midterm and final exam was 45 minutes for 36 questions which was not enough time to read or write qns
There were no recodings in this class, just lecture readings which made it super boring and reading heavy. The timing for the tests were so short and the tests were difficult.
Took her DE class and was the worst class I've ever taken. All her lectures are just a bunch of text on a module and are very difficult to follow. Weekly discussions were fine. Her midterm and final were terrible. 38 multiple choice plus 2 essays in 45 mins. She even says she wants us to be rushed. They are also closed book. Would NOT recommend!
Distance Ed modules were fine, paper was long for a 100-level class but not too terrible (haven't got marks back yet though). Exams are UNBELIEVABLY HARD, I can't believe how unreasonable they are. 45min for 35 MC and 1+ essay questions. DO NOT TAKE IF YOU'RE LOOKING TO BOOST YOUR GPA!
Professor Wongs is a horrible professor. She gives you a total of 45 minutes for 40 MC and a 30 point written which is just unrealistic. She wastes test questions by asking you questions that require memorization of statistics instead of theory which I find useless since understanding theory is more important in this class. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
I don't think anyone should take her class ever. She doesn't really care about the students, and she doesn't really know what she's saying most of the times. She didn't know when was the final scheduled for her class. Her exams are extremely difficult. It's hard to pass the course with her as a prof.
This class was the WORST I've ever had. There was no guidance from the TA's or Professor Wong. The modules were dense, with all text and no recorded lecture or even interactions with any human being. The midterm was decent, the final exam was ALL stats-based and didn't even feel like a crim exam. The instructors for the paper were vague.
Online version- The written lectures and readings were super interesting each week, sometimes we were assigned documentaries to watch, and if you put a standard amount of effort into the course/do what is required you will be 100% fine for the exams and paper. If the psychology of crime interests you, the course is easy and fascinating tbh!
WILL NOT TAKE MEDICAL NOTES I fell ill a bit before the term paper & final were due. I went and got a Doctors note. She ignored my doctors note & demanded more personal medical information. Physically unable to study, I flunked the final. I dropped from an A- to a B.
One of the best prof I have had. The lectures are engaging, and tutorials are super easy to participate in. The concepts are easy they just take time to memorize and learn. If you go to lectures, read the textbook, and study well, you will do great. And, the statistics tested are only from the lecture, which is reasonable!
Professor Wong is one of the worst professors at SFU she has no clear outlines of what she expects students to do, it's almost as if she just abandons the students. Her lectures are garbage she just reads everything off the slides with minimal explanation. On top of that the TAs are so bad they provide no help. SFU needs to hire a new 103 teacher.
Horrible Prof. Reads off words to words from slides but expects students to take additional notes? Slides are not complete so you have to read the heavy text. The grading criteria are very vague and the TAs are not helpful. Prof left after playing videos and does this often. You can maybe pass the exam if you remember the whole textbook. Avoid her!
I'm 50/50 on this proffesor. The class is an exceptionally interesting one and the lectures were super engaging and actually interesting. I took tons of notes and studied lots however and that did not make a difference on the exams. Her exams are insanely difficult and the midterm average was like 54%?? Got above the average grade with a C+.. yikes
She does not post lecture slides on canvas or audio recordings. She expects you to be able to listen and type at the same time, while not understanding some people cannot keep up or learn that way. She talks very fast and does not wear a mic so it is hard to hear her. Paying $700 for a course that doesn't even allow access to the course materials..
If she's not going to post audio recordings or lecture slides for us to access.. AND expects us to be able to type and follow along while she talks in 2x speed, can she at least wear a mic so we can hear her.
Attending lectures is very necessary if you wish to pass this course, even if the slides are very minimal, and Dr.Wong provides very little explanation, you must attend. Additionally, TA's mentioned that Midterm and Final information is based more on what is said during lectures, and not tutorials, textbook info, and basically anything else.
Her tests were fair and the research proposals were not very hard. Asking Dr.Wong questions was also helpful because she would properly explain what she wanted. The only negative thing about this course is that the lecture slides are not posted, this makes it harder to write down what she is saying
Dr. Wong's lectures are interesting as she does go into details of each points on the slides. However, slides are not posted so you must attend lectures if you wanna understand the materials. Read all of the required readings since some of it will be on the exam. Study EVERYTHING before the exam as well, because there's no study guide provided.
Has a high sense of pride, refuses to change anything related to the course to benefit students. Didn't post lecture slides, had quite difficult tests, and you could generally tell she was doing the bare minimum. Tbf to her, CRIM220 shouldn't even be mandatory course for crim students, a lot of the content is relatively useless and unrelated.
Shes unequivocal about her expectations of us students. She shares some of her lecture slides, and for the rest you have to take notes. The readings are heavy but provide great understanding, and her lectures complement the text. Memorize key concepts for finals, the important stats, + actually pay attention, and you will be fine. I liked her class
TLDR; Doesn't care much about the struggle of the students, tutorials are interesting You have to be at the lectures, the TAs grade harshly, the tests are extremely difficult and made to confuse you. She provides easier bonus questions for extra points at the end though. Note taking in lecture is absolutely necessary and there is a LOT.
This class was the hardest class I have ever taken. I am a fourth year political science student and never has a professor expected so much from a class. She acts as though we have no other courses to do or a life outside of the class. Exams and midterms are horrid, exceptionally hard and she laughs about the average grade being a 65. Don't take it
People have been complaining saying that this class/professor is difficult. Personally I found that even if you just study what she taught in lecture you will do fine. Only a few assignments and they were graded fairly. Her lectures are well paced. Don't take her if you aren't willing to show up to class- she won't always post the slides.
This has been the worst prof I have had and many bad profs. Her tests are 90% short answer questions each worth up to 10 points. She barley posts her lectures which are filled with content. The TA's are no help and grade extremely hard. She laughs about how low the final averages are and does not curve her exams. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
Awful experience. This should not be a first-year course. Avoid if possible.
I loved her so much, she is the best proff. You have to do readings because there are quizzes every week. But she is a fair marker. Her assignments are long but you will have enough time to finish them. She moved our deadline shead to accommodate all students. Her lectures are interesting and you would WANT to participate. Be careful of apa.
Avoid at all costs, I don't know how shes still at SFU.
Whatever you do, DO NOT take any classes with this prof. She makes her tests way too difficult, marks way too hard, and doesn't even post slides. A large amount of information on tests comes from readings which is also extremely frustrating. AVOID
slides were not posted, attendance mandatory. I recommend you take this class with other professors. Had lots of papers and tutorials requires participation for full marks. TA was very helpful with papers, however proof lacked heart when presenting. seemed very strict and too nonchalant. lectures not engaging, questions for midterm/finals tuff.
Professor Wong's class was challenging, but manageable if you stay engaged. Attend lectures, take detailed notes, and utilize resources like the textbook and unstuck study for exam prep. The grading can be tough, but the content is interesting.
This professor is the only teacher i celebrated to be done with she does not teach the course material well and if you don't understand “her language” you will have to repeat the course as some people I know had to.
DO NOT TAKE ANY OF HER CLASS! The midterm was absolutely irrelevant! everything that we learned throughout the semester was not on the test
do not take this class dr wong is not a good prof what so every she does not be clear about stuff
RUN, the average on the midterm (after scaling) was 50%. As a second year who has a 3.4 GPA and is majoring in both psychology and criminology (have taken at least 4 classes in each)...Tell me why I failed the midterm after studying a fair amount, and why that was the hardest test I had ever taken???
As a first year student, this is the worst class I have taken. the Ta's grade so hard... this is literally a 100 level class and isn't supposed to be as hard as it was made. the weekly modules were crazy lengthy for no reason. A lot of repetition. THE MIDTERM IS THE HARDEST TEST I HAVE EVER TAKEN. The grading is unnecessarily hard which is so crazy
Avoid prof. Worst TA's ever they mark so hard and the midterm was so hard and marked poorly. Majority of the class is probably failing right now. She doesn't even curve the classes which she clearly needs to do. Never take class with her!!!
AVOID THIS PROF AT ALL COSTS! The weekly lecture slides and textbook readings took 10x longer than a normal class. Midterm had trick mutliple choice questions, and short answer questions on topics not covered in lecture. term paper is marked hard, and prof will not grant extensions even for medical reasons. hardest course i have ever taken
If you attend lecture and take some time to study material you're fine. She does talk fast, so I'd recommend taking notes on the lect slides before lecture and then adding notes. TA was Chelsey she gave really good feedback especially if you particiapate in class it helps you prepare for exam q's! If you took psyc 201 before this should be easy!
Agree with most of the other reviews for the course. There are weekly discussion posts which aren't too hard, but the exams are mostly written answer (some being 8 points a question), as well as a 15 page term paper. To pass the exam (most didnt), focus solely on the written "lectures" and study the ideas mentioned and you will pass, but avoid tbh
This prof has 0 pro's, literally AVOID UNLESS U ABSOLUTELY CANNOT. her lectures are long, midterm and final were like bad. really bad. the TA'S are not helpful, they grade so hard. as a 3rd year, I have never gotten anything under a B-, let alone a F... so humbling. discussion responses are ok, research paper is graded so tough...
AVOID AT ALL COST! I took this class as a requirement and her materials had nothing to do with what was on the midterm and final exam. Every week there is more than 10 pages of lecture material to read and you need to memorize all of it, just for it to not be on the exam. TAs are heavy markers, probably even biased. Just take it with Brenda.
Looking at everyones review for her, all i could say is I agree. For the sake of your own GPA please please please avoid her at all cost. I'm on academic probation because of her. Thanks for the so-called help Jennifer.
DROP RIGHT NOW! DON'T EVEN THINK OF TAKING THIS CLASS WITH HER. Idk how she's still a prof at SFU. She is insanely difficult for no reason. The materials she make us read and learn has nothing to do with what she expects to see on the exams. No guidance whatsoever. Take it with another prof for the sake of your own peace of mind.
how are people still taking this course with her... drop it right now if you even think of considering taking this class with her.
Everyone on here complaining about failing the course might want to look in the mirror and self-reflect. Lots of readings for the class, but manageable as it's an online course. Dr. Wong was very efficient with responding to emails and had in-person office hours every week. If you failed, it might be a you problem and not a her problem...
Dr Wong is very intelligent and tries to explain concepts well. She appears intense in front of the class, but is very kind when speaking to you one-on-one. She posts lecture slides, but attendance is important. You have to write a research proposal (~18 pages) which was graded harshly, however they do provide a detailed rubric.
failed after putting in so much work and now I am retaking the class.
Hard course. For the second part of the course we were expected to write a 20-page paper and we needed our previous 6-8 pg paper back to do so, and did not get it back until 10 days before due date... 10 days later after the due date, is our final exam, and still 1 remaining lecture, to which was the most intricate/complex lecture. Brutal.
Crim 220 is a very hard class to take and she was a very good professor for the class. She tells you specific topics that are on the midterm and final if you ask her. Her lectures are a bit fast but thats a good thing for the class as it is a lot of material to cover. Shes cares about your standing in the class if you go to her for help
I loved this class and the professor. She warned us from day one that the material would be tough, but she explained everything so clearly that it really helped. Her lectures went over the key textbook points in way more detail, but you definitely still need to keep up with the readings. Shes really passionate about the material and shes amazing!
