She is very nice, but extremely demanding on an already hard subject. I think she is out of touch with undergrad. courses. She is new so hopefully she will change her expectations a bit so students can really learn instead of stress about her trickery.
She teaches in only one way...outline! Very unclear on test questions and they dont resemble the homework at all. Makes chemistry more difficult than it needs to be. She shows us what she knows but doesnt realize that we are undergrad students. Do Not Take!
She is a new professor.I think she is expecting too much from general chemistry students and does'nt realize that this is new material for some of us. She seems annoyed with questions and her tests are more difficult than the lecture has prepared us for. I do not recommend her!
THe worst teacher ever she treats her students like peasents and doesnt give them the time of day.......... HORRIBLE
This is lady is a joke. The tests are nothing like the practice worksheets for the tests or the homework in the book. You 'REALLY' need to have an indepth understanding of chem to pass. A small part of me dies everytime I have to go to her lecture. I stay up every night asking the wall, why me?
The topics in the class aren't hard to learn and she teaches adequately but the tests require you to manipulate the information in ways you haven't been exposed to before. Only chem majors can get A's but she tries to be charismatic. Class averages on test are 40-65% on tests and quizzes.
Ok good lord people, avoid her at all cost! Her tests are awful; you could attend lecture every day and study until you're blue in the face, and still feel unprepared for exams. Seriously, go to Mira Costa or make sure you get another teacher....trust me on this.
she is a horrible teacher. Do not take her! I recommend going to another community college. She is the chemistry NAZI!
Dr. Zabzadyr is really smart and knows the material, but the exams she gives is HARD.Studying and doing problems are not enough.Knowing how to do chemistry inside and out is the only way you'll survive! The tests are NOTHING like class problems or hw.She thinks that her class is your only class.
her test review questions are nothing like her test questions. she is a VERY strict grader and if what you write on your test isn't excactly like her answer you will get marked down.
Chem 115 required a professor who would a guide through the material not a hinderance. She has no grasp that her students do not have a PhD in chem. I did all the sugg. HW and ex. and still her exams were foreign. Gets off on tricking her students on tests! A SADISTIC chemistry dictator! Avoid Her!
(Fall04)Her class is very hard.I did all the problems in the homework/handouts and went to her office hours after school on Mon./Wedness.After all the effort I put into her class I passed with a high C.She is a nice lady when u get to know her.She was fair though in the end.6/29 students got a D/F

difficult class....last resort
I just wanted to say that I feel sorry for all of you that had to endure the stress with this lady. I dropped her class and started taking it at Mira Costa and I AM SO GLAD I DID! The teachers there are better and I am actually learning and enjoying chem. once again! Please avoid this teacher!
if you want a guanranteed F or other bad grade, take this lady. If you want a good grade, don't take her if your life depended on it.
I took her gen chem class over the summer and it was great. Very hard, did chem all day and all night for 6 weeks, but I got a decent grade in the end. I dont know what all you are complaning about.
(SUM' 04).Nice lady 2 talk 2. Not very professional. Knows her stuff 4 sure. Organized, clear lectures; gets the idea through. Grading & exams very disorganized, hurried, haphazard. Exams R hard, rushed, & tricky. Doesn't go over tricky problems/tips in lecture. Good lecturer. Very unfair exams.
made me lose my interest in chemistry....very confusing and exams hard as brick. dont take her unless you wannt C or below.
Very hard tests! even if you study the lec. and the book you'll still get the class ave.(which is never higher than 65%). to get a better grade on the tests do any problems she puts up on her website and practice doing all her old exams. take her only if you are forced to! class might lower GPA!
she is very hard, but you are going to get what you want from this class. she is very helpful and organized. do not listen to other people. they are just being pathetic because they failed. if you want to learn something, go for it.
A tough class, but made up for by this gift of a teacher. Material was well presented and I felt well prepared for, yet still challenged by, the examinations. She will nick ya for sigfigs which i hate, but i ended up getting the hang of it finally after years of science education.
Something is very wrong with this class. She underemphasizes concepts and overdive on calculations. Yet her exams are predominately concepts and some questions come out from left field. She offers no tips and no info for studying on the exams. You could spend umpteen hours studying, doing all HW, supplements, past exams and still get an F. ??!
She is the chemistry Nazi. She sucks at teaching. Her tests are extremely difficult and no matter how hard you study you will probably fail. The only thing I learned was how much I hate chemistry and Zabzdyr.
Mean, confusing and will no doubt discourage you. There are great chem teachers out there, she doesn't happen to be one of them.
Dr Zabzdyr is a good teacher for not giving the answers away. I think she knows what ity is like to be a student. Lab is easy, but come exam time you beter know the material.
She's mean, merciless, and tough as nails. Her lectures are subpar - there aren't any real life experiences other than what's in the book, you might as well listen to a robot talk. Her exams are incredibly hard - it is as if she needs to prove how "smart" she is and not how much you've learned. I used to like chemistry, now I find it nauseating.
Okay. Her tests are hard that's true. But she is very helpful if you ever have questions and she is a good lecturer. The averages on exams are really low so people tend to flip out and drop her class, but an A in her class is an 85% or something and she gives extra credit to make up for low exam scores. Just be prepared to work hard.
stayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy awayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

doesnt get worse than this she is horrible doesnt give her students the time of day she doesnt know how to teach 90% of the class fails cause she teaches like we are supposed to already know everything.... She defines the devil
Tests can be a bit hard, but she's really clear in class and it's not hard to understand the lectures at all.
She's a nice person but her lectures and homework don't prepare you for her tests. Do not waste your time with this class because no matter how hard you try, you can't be prepared enough for the tests.
terrible teacher and she doesn't like her students. i would rather die than take her class.
Dr. Z is a great techer. She is always available during her office hours. She even let us copy the solutions to the homework and her sample exams. She set up study sessions before each test- it's not her fault if you didn't participate. If you did the homework then you should have had enough knowlegde to pass her class. She's great!
She is so weird. I am a 4.0 student and I find her teaching methods very deceptive and tricky. I know this class is not easy, but come on, it is still an undergraduate class, not a PhD level class. Please try to take another professor. Maybe if she has no students Palomar will finally listen to the many students that have complained!!!!!!!!!!!!!
She is a great teacher, but maybe not for everyone. Loved the way she tought the class, she made it very easy to understand. Her tests were not hard if you go to class and do the suggested problem. I hope she teaches another class I can take.
She is a horrible teacher. Her lectures aren't that bad, but they don't help you for the tests at all. Her extra problems don't help for the tests either. She is very tricky! You'll only pass if you can teach yourself everything. Palomar makes chem115 way too hard.
If you think out of the box take this class. If you're a normal biology major, this is a very hard class. Her lectures are very clear. Her tests fuse concepts in a way the book nor her supplemental problems will prepare you for. She is very nice and have office hours where she will help. An "A" is possible, but it ain't easy.
very clear, very helpful. hard class: hard subject. go to lectures and keep up with the work, not bad at all. lab wasn't very difficult at all.
She goes fast in lecture is is not a warm person. Her tests are super hard-most is x-choice and 2 questions are write out. she is a hard-ass. Dont take her. However, her lab is pretty easy.
She seems to have a lot of outside personal issues she is dealing with that interfere with her teaching. Her mood swings would dictate how difficult the quizzes/tests would be. She often seemed frustrated and said she did not want to be there. Her tests were not too bad (there is a lot if inconsistence with how clear the questions were, so you may
Very unreliable and flaky. She cancelled or was late for more than a half hour on 5+ classes. Three weeks before the finals, we were already 3-4 chapters behind. I had a different lab teacher and without that teacher's help, I wouldn't have understood anything.
Her tests were perfectly based off the lectures and asigned problems. She went over homework everyday in class. However, atleast 1/2 class failed: tests were somehow very, very, very hard. She was also very unavailable and absent at least once every two weeks. TAKE HER IF YOU WANT A COMPREHENSIBLE KNOWLEDGE of the course your taking, it's worth it.
she is prbably the WORST teacher ive had!u wont learn anything4m her! she doesnt show any interest to be there except for titrations and she said "i like to live vicariously through my students" b/c she is a titrating queen &likes to watch the studnts fail.she laughed at a students wrong answer before.she docks me alot of points for nothing
The subject is hard. You need a lot of studying to get an A in chem, no matter who teaches it. She is straight and to the point, no frills. Spares nothing for warmth. If you understand the concept and have done every hw problem available, you'll be fine. She'll gladly straighten out problems in the most brutally efficient way possible.
If you do HAVE to take her class, make sure you understand her method. Not anyone elses, lab teacher, or even tutor.
She's willing to help, and do any homework problem gladly. Very smart, only problem is that she expects everyone else to be just as smart. Her quizzes were ok as long as you really understood the homework, then you might get a B. If you feel u understand the concept, you probably don't. Only thing i can say is don't be discouraged, toughen it out.
I took her for a summer session and although there was a lot of busy work (copying down every procedure) I learned a lot from her. She was very approachable and willing to help you above and beyond. Plus, she's really cool. She grades strictly, but lets you know what to expect. Overall she wasn't very difficult and I really enjoyed her class.
Wow...chem 110 i studied my ass off and got 97s on the tests. This teacher is AWFUL!!! My hard work doesn't pay off...trust me im not afraid of pulling all nighters, as long as it comes through on my grade. Take it at mesa instead...BOYCOTT her or you will screw up your GPA. I learned a lot, but won't get into UCSD now :(NOT WORTH IT.UNAPROACHABLE
Really good lectures, as if teaching to a complete newbie, gives good examples of calculations, I don't know why people are saying tests are hard; practice the examples she gives and lab calculations and I would have done better than a 'B'. You only need a 85 to get an A and a 75 to get a 'B'. Not sure if it's the same in Lec. She's cool.
I took her in fall, almost half of my class failed. She seemed to be amused by the fact that everyone was failing because she did nothing to help anyone. She was absent over 6 times and never seemed to respect her students. I studied for all of her exams and I still did bad, she also grades really hard! Do not take her! Save your gpa!
she doesnt offer any help and hardly answers any questions. she'll just tell you to study harder and she admitted that she'll mess with your grade if you make her mad, especially on tests. Half of all of her classes aren't doing well
She is a very difficult professor. Quizes and tests are not represented in lecture, and she is extremely un-approachable outside of class.
Dr. Z is a tough instructor, very smart, and well qualified. She has high expectations for her students and she grades with equally high standards. People whine about the difficulty of her class but in reality she is preparing her students for a real 4 year university. This is not high school boys and girls, don't look to be coddled here.
Before coming to this this class I expected it to be hard but her class is ridiculous. She is a good lecturer but when it comes to her test it is completely unreasonable. She put material on the test that was not covered in the lab. Her tests are out of 50 points and she just double the point to make it out of 100, and there no partial credits.
Her lectures are good, but she teaches as if you hates her job. She?s not a happy person and doesn't encourage us to approach her. She seems annoyed all the time. She?s not helpful and doesn?t seem to care how her students are doing. If you take her class, you're on your own. Her tests are tough.
Do not take this class. It is ridiculous, hardest professor. Does not help at all!! most the class is failing. and we are all studying.
this class is so hard. Im taking her right now, and i just got into my top school for transferring and im failing. Im studying so hard to get a c. I wouldnt recommend this class unless it is the only class you can get into.
chemistry is a tough subject for a lot of people, and this is def not an easy class. Study study study from day . She is a tough teacher... quizzes are from the homework material.. but tests are difficult!! stick with it .. and make this class a study priority.
Tough class... if you are looking for an easy class.. look elsewhere. If you get in this class be prepared to do a lot of studying... She isn't a mean professor, just a tough subject. Study hard and you can do it.. gets you ready for university classes... not just your typical easy a class.
Zabzdyr is not impossible, but you better, at the minimum, know algebra really well. DO THE HOMEWORK! It will help, as well as reading material ahead of time, especially in her lab. I got an A in both her lab and lecture, she isn't impossible, but she is tricky. If Chemistry or Math is a weak subject, you will struggle, make no mistake.
This is a difficult class, but if you are good with algebra, do the homework, and actually study, there's no reason why you couldn't get an A. She is an excellent lecturer and presents info very clearly. My only complaint is she is very reluctant to go over how to do problems algebraically (which is where most of the challenge comes from for most).
REALLY HARD..if you're looking for an easy A then dont take her..BUT IF YOU REALLY CARE ABOUT LEARNING CHEMISTRY..AND CAN WORK HARD FOR IT THEN TAKE HER...I WOULD STRONGLY RECOMMEND HER.
She's a VERY hard professor that assigns a lot of work, but if you're really passionate about the subject and really want to learn, she's the one you want.
This was probably one of the hardest classes I have ever taken. Dr. Zabzdyr is vey smart and explains concepts well but the tests were grueling and she is a very strict grader. If you are stuck, definately ask for help otherwise you will be lost. If you are bad at chemistry I wouldn't recommend it because its a very challenging course.
Took her for 110L as well. Shows solutions after lab. Doesn't keep her lecture up with her lab so on the pre-lab you are guessing, but you can still get an A on a lab given everything else is solid. Tests are fair and straight from the labs, no major curveballs. If you love Chemistry, a win! Received an A in this class. JUST STUDY! Or else..
Dr. Zabzdyr's lecture skills are poor are best. The majority of these posts state that she is extremely well versed in chemistry; however, she regularly stumbles over impromptu questions. I've had to take assignments to the tutor, who has often needed to correct her errors. Don't let the doctorate fool you. She grades hard and offers little.
I got an A in the class & I'll admit it was a hard class. I was never savvy in the chemistry department (I flunked Chemistry in High School) Put the time to read the book & practice on your own time & it shouldn't be too difficult to get the A. She is a great teacher & prepares you, if that means expecting a lot from her students.Don't miss class!!
The absolute worst professor ever. Her lecture is incomprehensible, she makes no sense in what she wants from you. When asked for help, her usual response will most likely be "Figure it out". That's all she ever says. Dont take her. Sae yourselves
She is hard like others say but I still enjoy her class. If u want to learn more then take her. It will be hard with the 1st or 2nd tests/ quizzes but i guarantee u'll learn a lot from that. ps: her notes are very well organized
Whoa! Her class is very difficult. Her midterm is unreasonable. I was unable to finish it. It wasn't a content thing, it was just far too long. She was very organized and graded things promptly, but I would not take her again.
Worst professor ever. Absolutely useless. I only took her for lab, can't imagine her in lecture. Her "teaching" is terrible, her quizzes and tests are insanely difficult. Don't take her for anything.
AMAZING! If you are a science major this is the class for you. The material is challenging, but if you do the homework, show up to class, and take advantage of the office hours and SI sessions, you will do just fine :) I took both the lecture and the lab-both are very clear and interesting. Her grading is fair, and she doesn't grade on a curve.
She's really nice, has weekly quizzes, but has NO tests (labs count as tests). The quizzes are solely based on the experiments results, calculations, and pre-lab. If you do the labs properly, you will get an A on the quizzes, and A's in the labs, and an A in the class. BUY THE LAB MANUAL-- you will be using it everyday.
She doesn't know Chemistry to the degree to be able to teach it in any sense of the word and when it comes actually making sure the class is learning the material instead of just shoving what she might consider lessons, there is no regard. If you don't get it, you can ask and you'll get something to write on the paper, but don't expect learning.
Dr. Zabzdyr is an incredible teacher. She is extremely knowledgeable of the material, explains everything concisely, and has a heart of gold. It is a difficult class, but it isn't usual to find an "easy" chemistry class. Take her, especially if you really want to learn it! :)
This teacher will give you a workout. I would really only reccomend if you come in fully prepared for a ver difficult class...The FEW ppl that passed this class this semester were MUCH more on top of things then I was. However thats because I had a calc class and really didnt have time to pass both. Take her if your a chem major.
IF YOU are majoring in the sciences not a Great teacher she is not the approachable teacher nor is she engaging as a teacher. Lectures are projected coldly their where times i had to stop listening to her because all her explaining made things more difficult to understand. My recommendations is to take a chem class at Mira Costa.
Okay here's the deal. Her lectures are great-very clear explanations and organized notes. The knowledge she gives you is a great foundation for chemistry. However, her quizzes/tests are SO HARD-she tests you on the hardest concepts! If you just want a good grade-beware! But if you want a good foundation for future chem classes...tae her! Good luck!
I had Zabzdyr for lecture and she was terrible. I attended all but one class and was lost most of the time. She does not explain things clearly and her notes don't help for the 2 tests. Difficult to approach and a harsh grader. Apparently told another student that her fail rate was 75%.
I had her for both chem 110 and 110L. She is a great teacher to take the lab with, but her lecture is very hard. If this class must be taken understand that you need to spend all of your free time studying, and that may not be enough. She has about weekly quizes that aren't too hard, but there is a midterm and a final that are nearly impossible.
I took Dr. Zabzdyr during summer. I was doubting on taking her or not. Her lectures were very clear. Her tests were hard but they were fair, we did inclass example problems and the format was exactly or nearly the same on tests. If you study and know your material you will be fine. Ovearll she is a good preffessor.
Took her in summer, lab was easy, lecture was ruthless. Tests were very very difficult, often with 5-6 questions out of thirty straight out of left field (and yeah, I did her hw). I'm lucky I passed. Her lectures were clear enough but she simply did not cover everything in class. Compared to the other science teachers here, would NOT recommend Zab.
If you take her for lab I recommend taking pictures of your lab work before turning it in. She gives very hard quizzes and you really do need to study for them. Thoroughly fill out your labs and do not try to skimp on them because she knows! There are no tests and no final so the entire grade is based on multiple quizzes and lab work. Good luck!
She stumbles over impromptu questions, is clear in lecture because she is copying everything form a pad of paper onto the board, is unapproachable, and a poor teacher. I studied from the book and did homework problems over and over. In other chemistry classes I have earned an A. In this class I am barely passing. Take only as last resort.
She doesn't care if her students succeed or not. She doesn't like questions, which I think it's because she doesn't know how to answer them. If it wasn't for the notepad where she copies everything from, she would be completely lost. Her tests are extremely hard.OH and besides being a terrible teacher she's rude. Choose only as last resource.
Her notes are crystal clear, but as previous reviews have said, she bases everything off a notepad. Her exams are hard and she is a harsh grader when it comes to the exams but could care less on the Homework she assigns us. Grades are based off exams and HW ( easy to get 100% on hw)very little room to mess up. Take as last resort/not at all.
very hard teacher. give lots of notes, but they do not help for test. her test are very hard. She is not easy to approach as well i do not recommend her
Very Difficult. Does not use realistic examples during lecture. Exams are nothing like her notes that she over does.... not recommended.
Her notes are very neat and clear. There's a lot of homework that she doesn't even grade. Tests are hard, you have to be an expert in order to get a good grade. Overall, an okay teacher.
take as last resort please. she is unnecessarily difficult and mean.sometimes i think she just likes to fail students coz her questions goes a bit beyond what she taught in lab. She dosent care abt her students, you know she is just doing the job coz that's probably the highest job bid she got. she should never be allowed to teach. no passion
Even if you read the book and do the homework, none of that will prepare you for the questions on her test. I have no idea what content she is drawing her questions from but she hasn't let the class know. So far, the class average is at a 55%. I would only recommend taking this class if you're already an expert and would like to test yourself.
Unrealistic, No matter how well you do on the hwk and prep for tests it does not prepare you. Class averages 55% on tests.
Her lectures, homework, and textbook will not prepare you for her exams. The example problems in the homework, textbook and lecture are very unlike the written response questions she puts on the test. Very difficult to pass, let alone study for...
THE most boring Chem prof I've ever had. Lectures went by SO slow, especially with her monotone voice. She's super unclear, as she goes through problems on the board faster than she talks, so it gets super confusing. Very intimidating and has a "I don't care" attitude when you ask her a q. If u take her class make sure u already know everything.
She overdoes it on her quizzes by giving way too many problems in a tiny amount of time. She is not willing to help you if your struggling extra credit wise. Isn't specific when asking for an answer on a quiz. Has an "I dont care", "why am I here", "please go away" attitude.
Her lectures are very clear and easy to understand! Only problem is that the lecture does not prepare you for the quizzes and exams.... An extreme amount of homework is given and she does not even grade it. Not recommended if you need to learn General Chemistry.
Her lectures are clear and easy to understand; however, they don't prepare you for her exams. You can redo sapling hw and her online worksheets over and over, but she will put completely different, more difficult Q's on the exam. (too many written Q's not enough time, always rushed) She isnt approachable . Exam average 52%, 64% and 45% this term.
She is hard, she is a no BS teacher, won't pretend to like you, which I like. I have her to thank for the job I have. I'm a formulation tech at a biotech, and she gave me the skills to impress, & get me a job that requires a bachelors degree. She WILL help you when you ask. I have her to thank for my livelihood. Taking her again to prep for Ochem.
Do all the homework, all the review, read all the textbook, and do as many textbook problems as possible. The multi-concept problems for each section DO show up on the tests. It's a 75% fail rate, so if you want to pass be willing to put many hours in outside of class! Go to her office hours, she's nice to students when she can tell they're trying!
I'm conflicted. She's funny, and seems like a really cool lady. I like how she teaches the class. The homework is not too much, not too little. HER TESTS are unnecessarily difficult. In order to pass her test, you have to MASTER the subject, and then skip to level 100. Most of her students fail, over and over. If you work, don't attempt the class.
I love her!! Her lectures are clear and she's willing to help you if you're putting the effort into it. The exams are definitely challenging but if you do all of the assigned worksheets and study A LOT, it's possible to do well in the class. You have to put your whole life into it though, so be prepared to work hard!!
I LOVE HER! Dr. Zabzdyr is one of the best professors I have ever had! I had her for both lecture and lab, and I loved every minute. She's hilarious and her lectures are spot on with amazing lecture notes to go with them. Tough tests, they reflect the concepts she teaches and your ability to apply them. Be ready to eat, sleep, and breath chemistry!
Pre-lab can sometimes be confusing but she is trying a new manual next semester. She appears a bit stand-offish but is very nice when you get to know her. Ask for help only after you have at least attempted the problem. A quiz almost every week but no exam. A project at the end but its very easily graded and better than a final.
This is a tough class. Her quizzes (there are lots of them) are very challenging, and you're expected to fully understand each topic. That being said, she's very happy to help you if you show you're trying. Her lectures and lab procedures are always clear and thoroughly explained, and the grading fair. I'm glad I took her lab, and recommend it.
Dr Z understands the material very well and she expects a lot from you. I could not handle it but that's just how chemistry is. Chem is a hard topic and she is only preparing you for what you will expected to to in higher chem courses. I have a lot of respect for her and she is an inspiration. Literal goals. She would be an amazing mentor.
I love Zabzdyr, she was really cool connected with the students but unfortunately she is teaching a hard class and she is a TOUGH teacher. She wants her students to pass but she wants you to earn it 100%. She does not have favoritism and you get the grade you work for. She is always available to work with you and she tries to help you every step.
Excellent professor, very clear during lecture (and lab), readily available to help students although she can come across as rude initially. Makes you work for your grade. Her tests have a lot of written problems which are time consuming. Homework is online (sapling). Would recommend if you want to leave knowing chemistry.
I thought that her quizzes are too hard at first and didn't know what to study. But what you really need to do is go to every class cuz that gives you 5% grade, and pay attention to whatever she lectures on for the lab procedures since she quizzes them (even though she doesn't really seem to emphasize those). I wouldn't say that her class was easy, but she gives you what you earned.
My worst college experience to date. She is completely disconnected from the students in lecture. She offers zero consideration for any student in any situation. Lecture seems easy and clear, but it's nothing like the tests. If you have other responsibilities outside of school (work/family/etc.) take it somewhere else.
Zabzdyr is a cool teacher, her lecture is clear and she makes you work for your grade. Her exams are very hard, the averages range in the 50's, but if you put the time and effort you'll do fine.
Lab was fine, study the experiments and understand them and you'll do fine on the quizzes which is most of your grade. Zabzdyr makes her grading criteria very clear on the lab reports.
This professor is Amazing. She is clear and easy to understand. She takes the time to explain the material in a way that makes sense. She is AMAZING!
Hardest class I've ever taken! She teaches well but she's very unfair. You can do every problem in the book and on the practice tests but it will barely help you on the tests. She puts stuff on there that you've never seen before to see if you can work it out and people rarely finish her tests. She can come off as very rude when you ask questions.
Zabzdyr will make you work for your grade. She lectures very well, but when it comes time for the test you will be put in the deep end. The free response questions are far more difficult than the lecture questions; however, she has practice tests and worksheets online that prepare you for the tests. Put in major work and time, and you will get an A
Very well organized and clear lectures with helpful notes and study guides. Prof. is approachable and willing to answer questions and help students outside of class. The material is difficult and so are exams if you don't spend A LOT of time studying and doing multi-concept problems from the book. I left knowing chemistry like the back of my hand
Dr. Zabzdyr is very tough but very fair! She has an ample amount of resources on canvas for her students. Her lectures and clear and well organized. She can come off a little stern or rude but she is very nice and helpful. The ALEKS online homework took an enormous of time to complete and was frustrating. Start ALEKS ASAP!!!
indeed a difficult professor BUT she teaches so well that I fully understand the material. That being said, don't miss class. She moves quickly through material. She is quick about getting grades posted. she may seem to have a cold shoulder she's actually pretty awesome. My favorite Palomar teacher. - pro tip: take lecture and lab with her.
Cool Professor! The lectures where really easy to understand, and her lecture notes are super helpful. The worksheets and extra practice materials are also helpful especially since the key is also provided.
Amazing professor! She is super tough, but an incredible professor! Yes, the comments about her grading and difficulty are accurate. She is a picky grader. She is always happy to help you understand the material. You have to apply yourself, and really understand the material to get an A. I have a lot of respect for her!
Great teacher. She explains the material so well you won't need the book (if you really pay attention). Her worksheets and practice exams are SUPER HELPFUL. She makes you work for your grade but if you know what you are doing even if your numbers are wrong she will give you the credit. Take her for lab and lecture.
Professor Zabzdyr is really good at explaining Chemistry, and she is actually really nice. Her class is hard though, and you'll definitely need to put in a lot of effort. Her quizzes are difficult to say the least, and they're weighed heavily. Overall good professor.
Tests based on lecture and practices exams she gives. Highly recommend do the practice exams. I got 99 2nd exam after I practice the exam. Problems can be so similar to practices exams. For Aleks, she says don't use help to do knowledge check, but I will tell u do it. It will save ur time on this HW. Aleks doesn't help test, just find a way finish
I recommend taking her lab a different day from her lecture day. Her lab is usually faster than the lecture if u take it on the same day. I took her lab on Fri. while lecturing on Mon/Wed. By the time I take her lab quiz, I know everything. I guess that's why I got an easy A than students to take her lab the same day as the lecture.
Only had for lab in 6 weeks of summer. Quizzes are similar to pre-lab assignment but will have conceptual questions that draw from the procedure, including nomenclature, reactions, equations, etc. Know the names of ALL compounds used in an experiment. Know balanced reactions you will run. Practical is a lite collection of these labs.
Very hard, but you do learn a lot. She is a tough grader and you really have to work for your grade. She is good at teaching but her lectures don't seem to get as much info in as is needed for the tests, so do the worksheets! Those who want to understand chem rather than just taking the class for prerequisites will probably enjoy her class.
Her quizzes were unpredictable sometimes and always seemed harder than the prelab. Sometimes we'd have quizzes/labs on topics we hadn't even learned in lecture yet (I took her for both lab and lecture). Many of the labs have to be turned in by the end of class, including a written conclusion, which she seems to grade differently every time.
really really tough class especially just coming off of a rather easy chem 110 prof. the ALEKS is mandatory but is baby busy work compared to the content she tests you on. If you have to choose, spend more time doing practice tests and worksheets rather than ALEKS. (-_-) really tough grader and definitely makes you work for your grade.
Clearly and thoroughly teaching material. Professor Zabzdyr will hold a review session before the exam. Attending those will ensure you what she will give on the exam.
So, I failed this class, but it was purely because I work almost full time and have two kids. This professor is THE professor to take if you love chemistry and if you really want to have a full understanding. It takes a lot of work and if you have a busy schedule, it will be even MORE difficult than it already is. Not an easy A, but a great class.
Zabzdyr gives tough tests that are not similar to the examples she provides in lecture. The problems are very challenging. The tests consist of critical thinking problems, no multiple choice. Unless you love chemistry, I wouldn't recommend taking her. The class average for all 4 tests was between 25-45.
Jennifer is brilliant. However for a 100 level chemistry course, the bounds of the class are exceeded. Our exam averages have been between 25-45 the entire semester. Exam review sessions and lectures are not similar to the exams. If you do not go to class, you will fail. If you do not go to SI, you will fail. Going to both, you may fail.
Hahahahahaha RMP being sus when both classes are still taking the 20% final. Her class is okay. She teaches you basics and posts p l e n t y of practice problems. Take her class if you want to dedicate your time to chemistry!!
Test averages are between 25-45%, they consist of 9 pages of long critical thinking problems and you're only given 1.5 hours to test. IF you're able to finish which most don't in that time, you won't get to check your answers. Her exam review prep, worksheets, sample exams, & notes are not enough for you to know how to answer her q's in short time
Do not take it with her. Exams are too long and difficult, I didn't finish a majority of them and she does not teach the material well. Overall very frustrating class.
I was in for a rude awakening with this one. Class average through the first 3 test was below 40% (no curve) for a room of Bio, Chem, and Eng Majors. It does not matter that your lowest test is dropped, and the final replaces the next lowest if your test grades keep getting lower. Calculus 2 was easier than this class. Avoid if any possibility.
Avoid if you can. She is extremely knowledgeable but to pass you need to eat, sleep, and breathe chemistry. Exam 3 had an average of 28% and the highest score was a 69. She expects too much out of a 100 level course and it was sad to see students who were accepted into top schools fear their admission being taken away because of this class.
About half the class eventually gave up because of the way grades are displayed. It makes me think that its the reason why avgs got lower. If you do look at grades after the extra credit problems, some did great (85-114%). I personally appreciated and hated how difficult this class was.
This class was really tough I'm not going to lie. Professor Zabzdyr is extremely smart, has a passion for chemistry, and will push you to learn the subject to whole new level. At times I thought about giving up but it was totally worth sticking it through. I learned a lot taking this course, especially grit. Don't take if you're weak of heart.
Knowledgeable professor but lectures only on basic problems then tests on the most advanced ones that were never covered. On top of that exams were unreasonably long given the difficulty and amount of time. You can pass if you study 2-3 hrs for every lec hour but most people have other classes and a life. She be doin the most for a 100 level course
There is a good amount of homework to be done using Aleks and the tests can be difficult and time consuming. Although, her lectures are amazing and very understandable and she loves to answer any questions! Weekly lecture and prelab quiz. Will remove lowest test grade. The difficulty comes not from memorizing material, but applying it differently.
Really great lectures but biggest gripe comes from the expectations in this class. I don't recommend taking over summer unless you are not working and are willing to spend at least 5 hours a day breathing chemistry. The amount of homework is unrealistic with written and online homework. Tests were also not like the problems given in class.
Chemistry in general is a tough class, but Zabzdyr's class was definitely challenging. My advices:come to class prepared, do the sample exam questions/worksheets that's posted on canvas, go to the SI and the exam reviews, do the extra credit challenge problems and classwork, re-do all the questions again and again! She'll drop lowest quiz and exam.
She will ruin your life. Her exams are extremely long and not similar to the reviews. When asking her questions on how to do better she told me chemistry isnt for you.
Getting straight to the point: Good at lecturing but doesn't matter because test are impossible. No way to finish test on time. Test questions are way harder than they needed to be. WAY too much Aleks homework, does not help for the test. The lab quizzes were impossible to study for, I reviewed the prelab so thoroughly and still fail those quizzes
She's the reason I changed my major.
Knowledgeable of the subject; however, her lectures only cover basic material which will not help with exams. Would not recommend taking her classes
The homework given is really hard and confusing. Test are above and beyond what you learned in class. Examples of problems given in class are nothing like the problems given on the exam. You are going to need to go to SI sessions in order to have a chance of passing and maybe even a tutor. Most people in my class failed.
I was scared to take this class due to the the ratings, however I am glad I did. Yes the exams are challenging, but you are given every resource possible to pass. Go to all the SI sessions, go to her office hours, do every single worksheet, and go to every single practice exam. Be ready to put in the work and you will end up loving the class.
For those wanting to learn chemistry at a higher level and pursuing a career in STEM, I recommend Zabzdyr. The class is hard in terms of tests, quizzes, etc., However, the rewards are worth it such as being efficient in studying, actually understanding the material at a fundamental level, and preparing you for harder STEM courses that are ahead.
Professor Zabzdyr is a great lab teacher, but you have to put in the work. She may seem unapproachable, but she wants to help you (only if you seem like you want to learn). The thing about Zabzdyr is that she wants you to become knowledged, rather than succeed. Success in her class is defined by your efforts. One of the hardest classes I've taken.
This professor teaches the basics during lecture and expects the students to be able to do the hardest possible problems on homework and exams. I'm a straight A student and really struggled with this class, studying doesn't really help either because no two questions are similar in any way. Exams are only math, no multiple choice.
If you told me I could either take Zabzdyr's class again, or you could smash my hand with a sledgehammer and break every bone in it, I would have both my palms flat on the desk before you could finish the sentence.
She knows her stuff and will answer questions when she is there. She won't be there much and wants to gate-keep not help students. She will go out of her way to take off points and would rather you fail. She will not slow down or review, teach yourself on your time and know you already lost points. She's even worse online.
Online she has more control and so can take you down more. I think she figures you are at home so she should make it as hard as possible. If you like Chemistry but want to hate it, or just hate yourself, this is the instructor for you.
I really don't know what to say other than this is the worst class I've ever taken. I feel like I understand everything (the fact that I have a 94% in lab with another teacher), but when tests and quizzes come around they're nothing like the basic examples she taught us. It almost seems like she wants to fail you. SI and practice tests don't help.
I highly advise all students to not take chem with Zab. I did not retain any information, she does not help you understand your mistakes, and she will leave you with a 30% average on all exams. There are way better professors out there to take chem with.
Avoid taking her at all costs if you can. She pretty much expects you to know everything the first time, she nitpicks every little thing she can when she grades your work, she doesnt seem to care about helping or try to be understanding. She basically throws work at your and says do it. She may be a good professor of your major is chemistry.
She is the worst professor in the entire world. I had anxiety attacks before every class. I understand a hard class requires a lot of work but I put in that work and still barely passed. I went to tutoring every day, do all the assignments, and went to office hours but none of that mattered. This class sucked so much life out of me don't take her.
This was truly almost a complete deterant from my ever wanting to continue pursuing my science career. This professor was not reasonable with late online submissions, she never gave answers to practice problems until after a module was covered. I spent hours with different tutors to understand the way she approached questions and still. Just DONT
She is by far the worst teacher I've ever had. Doesn't go over labs and calculations enough. Tests were ridiculously hard for a General chem LAB class. Her questions were way too advanced and she grades them way too harshly. Obviously doesn't care about her students. DO NOT TAKE HER if you care about your GPA.
I'm not even kidding when I say she gave me a zero for missing class to go to my grandmother's funeral. I gave my group all of my completed work ahead of time and sent it to her and she said that it didn't matter because I was gone (even though I explained why) and gave me a zero.
This class is VERY TOUGH, quite likely the hardest class I have ever taken. I took this class twice, first time I failed, second time I got a B. To succeed in this class, you MUST go to every SI session, do the practice exams, and ASK. QUESTIONS. Zabzdyr is very knowledgable and will help you if you ask, but you gotta put in a LOT of work.
Nothing great about this professor whatsoever. She does not go over anything in class and grades EXTREMELY harsh for no reason other than she has nothing else better to do.
I have taken this class multiple times with multiple professors (3) to get into graduate school. Chemistry is not my major and I am a future PhD student. If your goal is to have good GPA or get into graduate school, take this class with ANYONE else. However, this might be the class for you if you enjoy feeling stupid and don't care about failing.
The best way I can describe her is with this story: I had gotten help with a particular homework assignment from my lecture professor, when I turned my assignment into Zabzdyr, she graded me at a 67%. She graded help I got from another Chem 115 professor at a 67%. Don't take her class, you're better off with someone else.
Exams are way harder than anything given in class and the written homework is hard and confusing. Dont expect to be prepared for the exams, you wont be.
The class isn't that hard IF you use all the resources given. Do all the practice exams, worksheets, take written homework seriously, go to problem solving/SI sessions and you'll be fine.
There is a difference between a class that is hard due to content and a class that is hard because the professor has inscrutable standards and a desire to have a very difficult class for no reason other than it appears to be part of her identity. You WONT develop a better understanding of the material than you would with an easier prof. Avoid.
Dr.Z's class was hard, time consuming, and made me cry at points. GO TO SI SESSIONS, they will help you. she gives classwork the day of that you will NEED to turn in to get your points. Dont miss class, be engaged, dont CHEAT, and you'll be fine. weekends to do exams, class curve, there to help!!!
Terrible. One of the worst Professors at Palomar for sure. She literally grades everything to the highest level of difficulty and makes you do calculations on labs before you have even done them. She has no resources and tells you to know all kinds of math based on an awful lab guide. Waste of time.
I took her lec. & lab Fall '19. Those who are complaining about the difficulty and the grading are going to crumble when they make it to upper-division university classes. You will need to work your tail off to succeed in this class, just like you will need to work hard later in your academic career. Dr. Z cares, and this is how she shows it.
I really didn't enjoy this class at all, you do a lab every day that involves a ton of calculations to follow that I dreaded every week. The lab exams I only got through by believing in myself and hoping for the best, there was literally no way to study for them. She is a nice person and great to chat with, but the class itself is awful.
Most of the complaints here are valid. highest grade on the lecture final was 90% with an average grade of 55%, so obviously the standards are way inflated. However I aced it without trying hard so if you actually try there's no reason not to do well. My main complaint is all lecture examples are 3/10 difficulty with exam problems being a 9/10.
Professor Jennifer Zabzdyr standards are physically impossible for any student to achieve. BE PREPARED TO RETAKE THIS COURSE.
Even with going to office hours, getting a tutor outside of class, studying for hours, and always asking for help, the highest grade is a C. I recommend other professors for this class as I had felt defeated many times with exams and never saw any improvement. As a student who has straight As and is a chemistry major, take someone else.
This summer CHEM115 course is brutally difficult. That being said she is the best chemistry professor I've had so far and her style of lecturing is amazing. She helped me understand concepts that hadn't made sense for years. Be prepared for studying a LOT to pass quizzes & exams. You can do well in her class but you have to work very hard for it.
Professor Zabzdyr challenges you in the best way possible. There are practice worksheets, practice exams, and she answers any question as long as you ask it. She is a great resource to have and is extremely knowledgeable about Chemistry. She is more than willing to help you as long as you're willing to learn and listen.
I took this class over the summer online with the lab. Her lectures made sense and when you asked questions or needed help she was helpful. However the homework and exams were always so difficult and hard without help. There was an impossible amount of homework. Overall not an easy class or professor even with SI sessions. I had a terrible time.
Put in the work, go to tutoring, seek help, and know that it is a difficult chemistry course.
Dr. Zabzdyr is an excellent teacher, but her class very much reflects that. The level of difficulty at which she teaches versus how she quizzes/tests students are very different. Outside of her lecture and worksheets, you need to have your own understanding of how this level of chemistry works as it's many concepts coming altogether.
The reviews make her seem very scary. But it's really just a very very tough class. I took it in the summer, glad I did, but wow that was crazy. She is interesting and very very smart. If you actually ask the questions you have she's awesome.
Incredibly smart and will explain anything you have questions about.
Attend class meetings and ask her questions about your lab submissions, and post quizzes. Understand the lab procedures well and you will do good on her exam. Take advantage of her practice exams and know how to read the volumes of titrations. This class was enduring, fun, and she stays after her labs if you need help with any assignments.
Dr. Z is incredibly smart and amazing at answering questions. Chem 115 is not easy no matter who the professor but if you do your work and ask questions to thoroughly understand the material you will survive.
Good grade = time studying + asking questions, she's very good at helping you understand difficult concepts. Your lecture grade is based on a quiz every other week with a cheat sheet and one gets dropped. You also get a cheat sheet for lab exams. It might depend on your class but your grade might be curved up. As a stem major I enjoyed her classes.
There were different classes that have complained to the dean. Take at your own risk.
Her teaching style works for some people, but I wouldn't recommend her class to anyone I cared about. Extreme expectations of understanding, the once a week quizzes are very difficult since you have such a little amount of time to completely master the subject. I'm an A student but no matter how much time I spent studying, I couldn't get above a D.
She's amazing when it comes to teaching the subject matter, but her course difficulty level is a bit unreasonable. I was able to do well in the class, however, that's because of the hours I spent studying for her class every single week. That amount of time spent studying is a luxury that many other community college students simply can't afford.
It is completely a scam and a waste of time. All you do is memorize problems that she doesn't talk about during lectures. Read the reviews that are not weirdly worshiping her. Avoid.
this prof is tough. the quizzes are very important to ace AND she gives 2pts max xtra credit/week (ANSWER IN CLASS QUESTIONS). Quizzes are 15mins, 2-3 questions, pretty challenging. to do well, watch videos and review notes. for exams, DO HER PRACTICE PROBLEMS/ANYTHING she recommends!! good office hours. very smart. lab pretty simple, lecture hard.
This class is very quiz and exam-heavy. If you do poorly on the quizzes chances are you won't pass, quizzes are 15 minutes long and out of 10 points. You can get 2 extra credit points per week that count towards your quiz grade by solving problems on the board. For exams,I urge you to do her optional worksheets and homework as your main study tool.
Zabzdyr is a great person that teaches one of the hardest courses at Palomar. Here is a ranking of important study material: 1. Studying knewton alta will do nothing 2. Lecture notes are too basic but help with understanding concepts 3. Worksheets are closer to the quiz/exam material 4. Do LOTS of textbook problems!!! I wish I had studied more.
Zabzdyr is a good teacher, she explains everything well and makes the concepts learned in lecture really easy to understand. However her exams were difficult as the questions often times felt like puzzles, as many of them were a combination of both new and old concepts combined in a way that required an extremely in-depth level of understanding.
This class is tough in general but she makes it 10x harder. The exams are insanely difficult and anytime I asked her questions, she seemed bothered. She wasn't very willing to help her students. If you have other options, take chem somewhere else.
I had an extreme family emergency and had to miss a lab/lecture, and wasn't able to fully catch up by the time of the midterm the following week. I messaged her multiple times explaining the situation to no response, only to be met by her pretty much saying "Too bad, the test is today". Not a very kind or understanding professor at all.
I took Professor Zabzdyr in 2022. I had a vasovagal episode, passed out, and got a concussion. She ignored my emails sending her my hospital notes that specifically told professors I would need more time on assignments and made me take a quiz DAYS after my concussion because I didn't consult with the DRC. Because I guess ER notes aren't enough.
Class taken twice. Notes are too simple, worksheets too different, and the tests are heavy "like puzzles." Nice person, but expects us to know it by heart like she does. If you don't dedicate your life to studying, it's hard to have a chance. Take the lecture class elsewhere, but surprisingly, her lab class is not bad. HW: lots; nothing like test
professor zabzdyr (said "zayder") can seem a little scary, but she does actually care about helping you. for the love of god, if you do bad on quizzes, DONT GET BEHIND. i very narrowly received an A, and most of the class got a B or below. lectures are decent, nothing remarkable, and posted on canvas afterward. overall, recommend, but be prepared!!
You know those professors that always say stuff like: "half my class fails because my class is SO HARD"? Well, here she is. This professor makes her class so unnecessarily difficult, and gives pop quizzes at the beginning of the week before each student has the chance to actually grasp the concept, which makes their grade suffer. Genuinely awful.
Take this professor if you hate your life. This professor doesn't care about their students. They aren't understanding, and not passionate about the subject and overall a terrible instructor. The homework, worksheets and study guides are not aligned with the exams. I truly wanted to give them a chance and was met with utter disappointment.
very exam-heavy, a lot of homework, but homework, worksheets, and study guides are not like what's on the actual exams. Makes exam questions harder than it has to be, and overall seems not passionate about her class, and seems like she doesn't want to be there. I would not take her class again
This class is a step up from earlier Chemistry courses. Before first exam I was at a 64-67%. However after I started doing the textbook, lecture, and practice exams problems she gives, its 10x easier. Ending with a 95%. The Owl homework is sometimes ahead of lecture and more advanced, but it shows you how to solve the problems, making it a non issue.
For the lab reports, she requires you to finish and correctly do them before turning it in. Which if you complete every single one is easy max credit on the lab reports. The Lab exams are almost the same as practice exams you do the lab before. Overall fun and helpful if you have any problems.
I dont normally write reviews on professors but I felt the need to write one for this one. This professor is the worst professor I have ever had. The exams are like puzzles and dont reflect homework or worksheets. I received a B after dedicating countless hours studying everyday. There is a quiz every Tuesday and they contain curveballs.
Brutal class.Three exams that are cumulative from the beginning of the course to current place and demand an unreal level of understanding that homework and worksheets don't prepare you for. Quizzes are unpredictable. Makes the class unnecessarily more challenging then it already is. Half the class dropped. Don't believe the glowing reviews.
Professor Zabzdyr is a fast-paced but clear General Chemistry II lecturer. Her slides and prerecorded videos are very helpful for review. Exams are fair but require strong preparation, and quizzes reward showing work. Office hours are valuable if you put in the effort.
Solid teacher. Very intimidating and not that understanding. It felt like I was bothering her every time I needed to talk to her. Attendance matters!
Professor Zabzdyr gets a bad rep because this class is difficult and students take this class with too many STEM courses to dedicate enough time to study. OWL hw is annoying but her prerecorded lectures & worksheets helped a lot. Watch the lectures & practice the problems and the quizzes will be easy. She gives partial credit, you just have to try.
