great prof, great course...nice teacher who is helpful and fun...pretty nice lookin too ;)
Very good professor overall. Even though she's fairly new, does an excellent job of explaining the material and very understanding of student needs. History is not for me, but for those that like the stuff they will enjoy her class. She is also quite attractive looking so that did help me pay attention in class. :) A+ overall!
Simply the best person and professor at Ryerson.
Very nice and cute, two adjectives that usually aren't applied to profs :) She's so approachable and extremely helpful during office hours. She's a clear speaker and makes class fun, even for people that aren't into history!
She is one of the best professors at Ryerson. She's easy to talk to but you have to get on her good side because she will lose her patience with you if you talk during class or ask stupid questions. But otherwise absolutely fantastic
Awesome professor. Really has a passion for what she teaches. Amazing lecturer. Although attendance is not mandatory, most of the stuff that is on the test is from lectures so I highly reccomend going to lectures and taking notes. If you do, the class is pretty easy. If you went to every class I would even suggest not buying the text book.
Phenomenal teacher. Go to lectures, or get lecture notes- she repeats important things at least twice, usually three times. Has a passion for what she teaches, and her lectures are interesting. You have to study for the midterms and exam- they are essay and short answer questions. If you need and extension, or help she is very generous & cares.
not so good
Great prof! Take her classes!
She is THE BEST! There's just no other way to put it.
Easy class, easy prof. Read some text, take some notes, write an essay, get a B+
she may come across as easy and a push over, but shes knows whats shes talking about without a doubt
Awesome, Easy Going and Very approachable. Attend every lectures, notice what she repeats . Its going to help you a lot during exam and midterm
Whatta hottie =P!!! She's pretty cool, and she repeats important things several times. She has the American accent though, kinda annoying at times, because it just kicks in from nowhere.
great course, great prof... had her for tutorials and she made the discussions pretty good
She is such a down-to-earth person. VERY VERY nice. Extremely passionate. a guy and a girl started laughing at slavery, she got really upset. VERY VERY good professor. And please for this course if you have her, DO NOT BUY THE TXTBK, because I did not use it and she says it that everything that will be tested is from the class/ppts. so dont buy it!
Knowledgeable, flexible, approachable, and frienly. Four words that describe Professor Carson perfectly. She takes her job seriously and really cares about student success. Don't miss a single lecture!
Very easy course I got greats marks. Even had her for my tutorials and that was awesome. She is very nice and knowledgable and cares about her students. This was my fav course and prof this semester.
had her for 110 and 210, great prof, hot too!
A fantastic prof - really passionate about the course material. The course itself is easy - 1 midterm, 1 essay, 4 tutorials and the final exam. Course material is extremely straight-forward. She repeats important concepts twice which is useful for the midterm and final. DO NOT BUY THE TEXTBOOK - I didn't open it once!
Absolutely amazing prof! I thought the classes were very interesting!! It was my favourite class! No need to buy the textbook; if you add your own notes to the lecture notes during class and study, you will do great!
Great teacher. Very clear and repeats important information. Textbook is not necessary; I never used it. Just use powerpoints and notes. Some marks were lower than I expected, but overall pretty good.
Absolutely lovely Jenny! Fantastic teacher who cares about her students! It's a shame she's on mat leave though!
She's awesome! One of the best Professor's I've had at Ryerson. The material is really clear and she makes the class interesting! She's very helpful and cares about her students
Excellent Professor!
I found her as a very hard marker. She explained her stuff very clearly. He is very knowledgeable like other professor, no doubt. But as a lower level course you have to study a bit more.
Very Hard marker! she is nice and approachable but if you don't have skills in essay writing stay away from this course because it is basically all on essays!
good teacher and easy marker!!!
I took this class in my first year at RU and I am now graduating. She's still my favorite. Very clear, knowledgeable and kind. If you go to class and take great notes you do not need the text to get an A. All tutorial readings are academic articles. Even willing to discuss U.S. history outside class.
Very easy to get a high mark, just need to attend class and take some notes. Somewhat of a hard marker but just dont bs everything and you should get at least an A- in the course
Outstanding lecturer! I looked forward to attending her classes! Take good notes by keeping track of the important details and you will do fine. Good writing skills is the only barrier because she is a tough marker. A highly recommended professor nonetheless!
Just stay awake and write down the things she spends a lot of time on. Unless your writing is perfect you probably wont get perfect on the midterm but she does give out a lot of 80's.
She's very clear about what will be on exams, and she's concise when doing lectures, so you know exactly what to study for. A great prof.
Amazing professor! So sweet, kind, and actually interested in the material. Very approachable. As long as you listen you should do well. One of my overall favorites.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS as a liberal. Only take it if you are TRUELY passionate about colonial american history. Expected an A and got a C. Must attend every lecture. Dont believe the positive reviews like I did and avoid this class. Everything is writtenn, even the final. Marks really hard on essay.
DO NOT BELIEVE THE OTHER REVIEWS REGARDING HOW EASY HER CLASS IS. The workload is equivalent to a Required Course and it no way resembles its "Lower Liberal Status". Long essays and extremely hard marker. I've had added knowledge taking American History in high school yet I somehow failed the final exam. Extremely hard marker.
Very good prof, nice and always offers help and advice. I don't recommend taking the course unless you like American history. I found the TA's to mark very fair and she actually cares about her students, the exam was a little trickier than expected but still got a decent mark, you have to do work to get a good mark but overall a very good prof!
Excellent prof , passionate about her subject which makes her lectures interesting.Do well on the tutorials and study off of her lecture slides , Do not buy the text book. A little bit on the tough side for marking but over all fair marker.
She is a great prof! I had ZERO US. history background, I took this course first because others were full. By the end of the year became my favourite class thanks to her! You don't need the textbook at all but go to class and take GOOD notes! Everything you ll need to know for the tests will be in what she tells during her lectures! Very fair prof!
A pleasure to have as a professor. Dr. Carson is quite clear about what she expects on the exams, and very helpfully emphasizes important points in lecture. I attended every class and took detailed notes, and found that the textbook wasn't quite necessary. Lectures were always interesting. Would recommend.
One of my all time favourite profs I hope I can find another course with her i haven't already taken. very clear exams, helpful, understanding. overall an easy course and all the better because she's such a good lecturer.
Wonderful Professor, very passionate about history. She is super refreshing as a teacher. All handed in work is written, and she is a fair marker. If you like history, you'll love her!
Dr. Carson was a wonderful professor. She is very engaging as a teacher and very passionate about her work. She structures the course very nicely and is very understanding as well. She also gives of a major Pam Beesly from the office vibe, which is nice. Great Prof!
This has got to be the best course with the best prof I've ever had. Dr. Carson is so passionate about the subject and speaks with such knowledge it's really impossible not to fall in love with the class. Take notes on her lectures and that should really be enough, but read the textbook if you want because it's genuinely very interesting. Love her.
Dr. Carson is honestly the best professor I've ever had. I've taken HST110, HST210, & HIS854 with her so far, & look forward to taking more with her! She's passionate about the subject she teaches & cares a lot about her students! Go to her office hours for the exams/essay, she'll help you out a lot. She's very sweet & kind! Just AMAZING!
Professor Carson is THE NICEST prof at Ryerson. I would recommend any one of her classes to anyone who asked me. I'm in HST 210 right now and she makes the course so interesting. I love her lectures and how passionate she is about the subject. Make sure you are prepared for her tutorials and answer every question at the tutorial and you'll get 100.
Professor Pam Beesly always makes class worth attending. It was an honor having her teach me HST210!
Dr. Carson is one of the nicest profs at Ryerson, and she's extremely passionate about American History. I've taken a couple of her courses, and throughout all of her courses, she stimulated her students with the content. Her African American history course is one of my favorites, great seminars, and her midterms and exam are fair!
Really regret not going to lectures as much as her lectures were extremely knowledgable. Textbook is not necessary if you go to class and add to her slides. Midterm and final was very straightforward and fair. Her TA is alot harder of a marker but still pretty reasonable. Never took history and Dr. Carson made it lively.
If someone were to ask me who is the best prof I have ever had, I would right away say Jenny Carson. She genuinely cares about her students and I purchased the textbook but I never even opened it because her lectures were AMAZING and covered everything. And she told you what was to expect for midterms and exams. Just a pleasure to be in her class.
Great prof who really cares about her student's success. If you're interested in history as an elective choice, I would highly recommend! Her classes are interesting and she pushes for class participation during her lectures.
One of my favorite profs by far. Engaging, incredibly knowledgeable, very approachable. Her classes were the highlight of my school week. A bit of a tough grader, but super helpful in office hours. They're pretty busy but I suggest getting help with the essay in office hours and you will do well. Excited to take another class with her this semester
She's pretty good. No need to buy the textbook, although she brings it up almost every lecture. Make sure you go to tutorials, they will bring down your mark if you don't show up.
Amazing prof! Prof Carson knows her content and is always willing to help if you don't understand something, although her content is very straightforward and clear to understand. Very clear marker and she cares about her students. Tutorials are mandatory though and so are lectures because she covers so much content in one class.
This woman is a national treasure. Ive taken 3 courses with her and she is the kindest & most engaging professor who actually cares. Gives lots of feedback so you can improve
She's great. I love the tutorials as they're very fun and engaging. She's very professional and she explains concepts well.
Professor Carson is the most engaging professor I've had the pleasure of having during my time at Ryerson. Her lectures are easy to follow and she often points out things that are important to know for the exams in class. The tutorials are engaging and fairly easy to get good marks in if you do the readings. Her guidelines are easy to follow.
an absolutely enchanting and wondrous professor! I'm in STEM and normally find my liberals boring but this course was extremely interesting. If you go to class you shouldn't have to really study much except review.
Easily the best prof at Ryerson! Lectures are super engaging and tutorials are easy to get 100% in as long as you contribute and vaguely reference the readings. I've taken two Liberal courses with her and would go out of my way to take another. Exams and essay are marked extremely fairly so if you're a good essay writer it's a super easy A
Assignments were straight forward and easy.
She persuaded me into completing a senior thesis I've taken every class she's taken in my years as an undegrad & without hesitation I can say that she is the BEST professor I've ever had & one of the BEST people I've had the privilege of getting to know. Engaging classes, super caring, there aren't enough words to describe how amazing she truly is!
Prof. Carson is by far the most amazing, intelligent, friendly and caring prof I've had at Ryerson. In my final year and she's truly an inspiring teacher who encourages and supports your learning. She creates a space for conversation and growth and I couldn't recommend taking one of her classes more. I wish I came across her courses sooner!!
Prof. Carson is amazing, she really cares about her students and is very accommodating - especially with COVID-19. Definitely would make an effort to go to her lectures though, super interesting and vital to passing the course.
Such an amazing professor! She truly cares about her students and their well-being. Although her lectures were pre-recorded they were still interesting. Mark breakdown is weekly tutorials, an essay, and a take home final. She was always available by email when I needed help or clarification. She is a true gem! Would take any class with her!
Take Professor Carsons classes whenever you can!! Shes caring and kind, and gives good lectures too. She isnt a hard marker and doesnt expect too much of you in terms of assignments. I would definitely take one of her classes again!
Carson's class was entertaining and convenient! There were 4 assignments where we had to answer 10 questions based on the readings (40%), one essay (30%), and a final (30%). She provided us with one on one help for the essay, and the content we had to go through for the assignments was interesting so it didn't really feel like work!would take again
love, love, love her!
Professor Carson is hands down one of the best profs I've ever had, her weekly lectures are a treat to listen to and she is the kindest and one of the most understanding people out there. Do your work and listen to what she has to say and you will do well. I absolutely love her as a prof and hope to take her in the future.
My favourite class and professor.
Professor Carson is probably my favourite professor at TMU. Extremely passionate about what she teaches and cares deeply for her students. She didn't really reference the textbook in class all that much but be sure to do the readings/watch the required videos as they do get brought up. Overall I would highly recommend her!
One of the best profs as she is extremely caring and genuinely wants her students to succeed! Tutorials were chill, and she will work with you during office hours to help clean up your essay and make it the best it can be! She gives you everything you need to know for the midterm and final, so dont mind my grade as that was on me. Would take again!
Jenny is such a sweet and caring person who gives engaging lectures and clearly cares so much about what she teaches. If you listen in class its not that hard to do well.
Jenny is the best professor that i've had to date. She truly cares about her students and is passionate about what she teaches. She is always available if you need help and will assist you with the essay that's worth 30% of the final grade. If you go to her lectures, you will find the tests easy.
I am quite surprised by the positive feedback she's receiving. It's SOOOOOO frustrating when I put in extra effort on an assignment and still only manage to receive around 70%. Her passive-aggressive behavior is also off-putting. Just avoid her.
One of the most caring and engaging professor i've had! She is very knowledgable in women's history and seems like a passionate teacher. Her lectures are very important to the exams and although she is quite forgiving, tutorial attendance is mandatory.
I regret taking a class with her.
Avoid her please. Don't regret like I do. Please please listen. Tough marker, not so fair. I would never take her class again.
Prof. Carson was clear, kind, accessible, and smart. Her classes easy as long as you do the work. The material was very interesting as well.
She is a great professor. The class is very straightforward with a mid-term, final exam, research essay, and 4 tutorials/seminars. She's super accessible and/or open to meet if you need any advice particularly regarding the research essay. Also, the exams are very fair and give you so much opportunity to do well if you put in the time to study.
I didn't even think I was going to like this course since it was history, but Prof Carson was sooooo good. You will have to study and put some effort into it, it is not a bird course in my opinion. But trust me when I say she cares about her students, and she really brought to life what she was teaching. looking to take another class with her fs.
go to the lectures and you will be fine. Many names and acronyms. You can see her passion, engaging and supportive.
Professor Carson is truly an amazing professor and an amazing person. She's extremely caring towards students and loves chatting and getting to know the students in her courses. The course content was extremely interesting, and Prof. Carson's passion for American history made the course one of my favourites. Don't hesitate to take HIS104 with her!
Very sweet lady and really puts an effort into building relationships with her students. She is a fair marker and if you are trying in her class, you will be rewarded for it. Only thing I did not like was that she glazed political figures like Obama 24/7 lollll very woke, but at least she is nice.
Prof Carson is truly one of a kind. She cares for every student and shows passion through her lectures. The lectures are definitely extensive but the grading criteria for the assignments are crystal clear and she provides good exam study prep. Make sure to take advantage of the 3 tutorials (15%) --more input in the group discussion = better grades!
Professor Carson is kind and understanding. You're graded on 3 seminars, a midterm, an essay, and a final exam. Seminars are easy, as she provides questions in advance and grades leniently. Both the midterm and the final are straightforward. While her lectures mainly involve reading slides, she is highly engaging. If you can, take her class!
Dr. Jenny Carson has to be one of my favourite profs tbh. She is very accommodating and cares a lot for her class. The class itself grades based off 2 exams (midterm and final), a research essay, and 3 tutorials worth 15% total. You don't have to have any prior knowledge of American history (although it helps) because she goes through everything.
Amazing! One of the sweetest human beings I've ever met. Really wants her students to succeed and will help!
Excellent prof. Very clear on what you expect for tutorials, essays, and tests. I would absolutely recommend taking a class with her!
Professor Carson is an amazing professor! I really enjoyed HST526 with her and learned a lot as a non-history major. This is definitely a class you should attend to be prepared for exams and tutorials, but her lectures are also interesting, which makes you want to attend class as well. I wish I had taken a class with her sooner!
Such an amazing prof who really cares about her students. You can tell she is passionate about what she's teaching which makes the material all the more interesting. Definitely recommend.
She is the sweetest most caring professor ever! She is understanding and truly cares about her students, though the finals or essays may seem difficult, she is always kind enough to lend a helping hand for a students success, and will always ensure you are prepared for midterms and the final.
