She was great!
She is awesome! Goes at a slow pace, and doesn't expect us to know so much. She is appreciative of effort, so her grading is really fair I found. She is also really corky and up beat which makes the class more enjoyable. DEFINITELY 100% RECOMMENDED!
Fun, funny, nice, clear, and flippin awesome. She can read Old English, so, you know right?
Great professor. Helpful, clear, interesting
She is a great professor who got to know every one of her students. Her class was like a book club, where you discussed the texts you were reading and added your opinions. She is never negative, and she gives excellent feedback on your essays.
A very good lecturer. I didn't attend many lectures, however, I managed to do quite well because she was very clear and concise in assignments. Her test and assignments are very easy, alot of inclass group work. Go for her class!
Overall, pretty good professor! Just do what is required and expected of you and you'll be ok. If you want an A, then work really hard and use your head a lot! It's just like an English class should be, which is more than I can say for many members of this department.
Rude, didn't care about the class, comments on essays were unhelpful and with a mean tone. Not a very nice person. I've never said anything bad about a teacher before this, I just found she was very unkind and used class presentations to take up class time rather than actually teaching us anything.
McKenney is wonderful! She really wants her students to succeed and she is very willing to sit down with you and work out any issues you are having with the class or assignments. She expects a lot, so you have to work hard, but I believe that is know a class should be!
Love professor McKenney, she is passionate about her subject and made everything seem more interesting in class than it had been on paper. She is incredibly helpful with any questions or help researching that you may have. Learned a lot in her course.
this class was horrible. While lectures are well taught and quizzes are fair, translation tests were really unreasonable. Made us print out a cheat sheet on the first day of class, but didn't allow us to use it until the last quiz and the final. Translations towards the end were FAR TOO LONG to finish in the allotted time
Learning a new language is really difficult, McKenney tries her best to provide students with the resources to succeed. It's not an easy course, extensive studying and memorization is mandatory. This is primarily a grammar course if anything. She always asked for feedback to help improve our learning. Great prof!
While Jenny is very knowledgable & enthusiastic, she is a poor marker. She doesn't know how to use the online system, which is annoying because your online grades are constantly changing (for in-class participation marks - worth 20% overall). Also, midterms and essays take at least 3 weeks to come back; MT returned AFTER essay so no timely feedback
She is a great prof., very kind and enjoyable to listen to. Lectures were more of a book-club talk about different ideas. Participation matters in the sense that there are random in-class assignments. Fair marker but expects a little too much from an in-class essay. Expect light reading at the start but heavy reading near the end of the semester.
Personally, I enjoyed her class. It was children's lit, so I think she took it easy on most of us since its an option course. Very friendly, her lectures felt like a book club of sorts. Fairly easy exams, marked fairly and pretty easy. I've heard she can be really tough sometimes.
Jenny is a great prof. Her lectures are very interesting and helpful. She is very helpful when it comes to learning some of the Middle English and not judgmental when you need a question answered. Get ready to read, but if you love literature then you will love this class.
Probably THE NICEST prof I have ever had. She is very friendly and always willing to help and answer any questions you have. Recommend.
Dr. McKenney is an amazing educator. You can tell she really loves what she does. Wants to hear the opinions of her students and encourages them to speak up. She can be a little bit of a tougher marker, but provides crystal-clear criteria for her assignments. She creates a very safe and supportive space for her students to share their opinions
I agree she is a nice person, but overall the lectures are very useless. Seminar is helpful in finding common themes and gaining a better understanding of the course material. The midterm was unrealistic given the time constraint and the final we were given no guidance on what to expect.
No need for participation, just do easy assignments in seminars instead. Seminars are useless, however, you get an extra 2.5% if you do attend. Tests are very fair, she gave the midterm questions in advance and for the final it was open book. Gives lots of opportunities for students to do well and gives a reasonable amount of readings.
Mckenney is overall a great prof. The material for ENGL 340 is terrible, but that's not her fault.
One of those professors who 2 years from now I'll forget I ever had. She was all around average. Her lectures were dull and forgettable. She delivered the information though. She was organized and I generally liked the assignments she gave. Fair grader to. Don't really have much to say positive or negative. I would summarize the class as "meh".
A good teacher overall. Her classes aren't so much "teaching" as they are inspiring discussion topics and listening with occasional input. You can come to class and be silent, but you definitely get on her good side if you speak something intelligent occasionally. Lots of reading, but hey it's an English class duh. Great reading list of books!!!
The lectures were dull but the seminars were very helpful. She grades fairly easy though as I did not attend most of the lectures and did well in the course.
Dr. McKenney's focus was Chick Literature which was a cool topic. Incredibly heavy on the reading but it isn't absolutely necessary to read everything. Participation marks, but talking once every two/three lectures is fine! Good discussion-based lectures. Very nice woman, and she expects the best from you. Major project and essay were intense.
Lecture was very boring considering the information was not boring itself. She's very nice and appears very knowledgable on the subject, her lecture's are just dull. Attended maybe half the lectures (prob less) and still managed a good mark, grading criteria is clear but midterm was a bit tough. not bad enough to not take again tho
First class with her made me feel like I was in kindergarten again, she flicked lights on and off to get our attention. She taught us the proper way to do assignments after they were already handed in, and was condescending when people stated opinions that contradicted hers. Her class was easy, but 75 minutes of discussion wasn't worth it.
She does not post lecture notes online, every class is 75 minutes of useless discussion. She does not prepare you for the final exam, not once did she mention what to expect for it. Multiple students emailed her asking about it and she simply did not reply to any of them. She clearly lacks care for her students success.
Great teacher, she cares and is always willing to offer guidance during office hours. I became a better writer as a result of this class, and my grades steadily improved as the semester progressed. Final exam is a joke, if you attend every lecture you should get 100% on the MC section. As for essays, will give good advice about how to improve.
Lectures were just discussion and it seemed as if no one had interest in the class besides those who had the discussion question for that day. McKenney's comments on essays weren't helpful and her instructions weren't great either. Too many expectations for a class that she barely showed interest in.
Jenny was an amazing first year English Prof. She knew that not all of us wanted to be English majors so she made sure the course was very easy. Lots of reading, but only short stories, lots of her classes were just discussing the stories and were not for marks. There were only 3 things really that you were graded on so they were worth a bit.
I really respect her as a person, however, she often shoves her beliefs down your throat. She can be condescending to those who don't always agree with her. She is really knowledgeable but she is also really narrow-minded considering English is very subjective. The books are really interesting but she keeps necessarily relating it back to feminism
She took everyone's opinions into account during discussion and was very open-minded. Very respectful and overall a great prof!
Do not take this class if you think poetry will be easy and a fun elective. It is extremely difficult. and a lot of analyzing. Go to class and take notes on all of the poems because you have to know them for the final. Go to office hours, they are very helpful.
Jenny has high expectations and while it is hard to do well in her class, it isn't impossible either. Her quizzes are hard and she expects you to remember all the little details. Classes are very laid back. Quite a fair marker with tests and essays. As long as you write a good essay, she's very relaxed with minor errors.
I had her when I took English during the spring semester, her class is fairly easy as long as you take notes and put a bit of effort into it. Both of the assignments and the final exam weren't difficult at all. I would definitely recommend that anyone that wants to take English to do it in spring and take it with her.
Lectures disorganized, does not follow the reading schedule she gives you, misleads you on the test content. Never know what the hell is going on in the class. She lets people spout off completely irrelevant thoughts & praises them. When someone offers an actual assessment tells them they are wrong. Read the textbook.
Professor McKenney was AMAZING. She was so incredibly kind and passionate about what she taught. I would definitely recommend her for ENGL 205 as she made sure everyone knew MLA format, deadlines, etc. and other things first years don't know. The essays were on really interesting topics and the discussions were engaging. Would take her class again!
Dr. Mckenney communicates the content with enthusiasm. For a class that is centred around poetry however, she puts a very good emphasis on minute details to remember. Come to class, take thorough notes about things that are unique to each of the poems you go over, and review for tests, and you should do fine. Other then that the classss get dull.
She's alright overall. She knows her stuff and let's you know it too. Overall the projects and tests we had were not really effective and some of the things we had to learn I thought were silly. Had her previously in a different course and enjoyed her then, but not in this harder class.
Only gave 1 person an A. Strictly sticks to the curve, when more kids deserved an A.
Mckenney is a great prof. She treats her students like actual people rather than just kids she had to deal with. I've had her for 3 classes now and I adore her. Shes helpful, funny and really knows her stuff.
She grades the papers with a lot of bias. If your not a woman you probably won't get a good grade. Lectures are completely pointless, except she does participation pop quizzes 10 times in the semester so you have to show up. She would ramble about useless ideas and it was very hard not to fall asleep.
Really grateful to this prof. Empathetic, understands that students are stressed, truly wants you to succeed. Go to office hours and don't skip class.
One of my favorite profs at UofC. Knowledgeable and caring, she wants her students to succeed and is very fair in her grading. Her classes are also a lot of fun and you can tell she tries to make assignments more interesting than the usual essays. She gave us lots of choice on what kind of projects we wanted to do and encouraged us to be creative
The reviews sell her short. She's a real kind prof who promotes really interesting discussions. I got a ton of feedback on my essays, more than I expected. She took the time to personally reply to every single introduction discussion board post. That kinda tells you everything. You do need to read and pay attention to write good essays, as usual.
Did not transition online well at all. Lectures were slow and dull; had to listen on x2 speed. Clearly had little to no communication with TAs, which effected everything from tutorials to grading to attitudes. Had things graded anonymously, resulting in a Russian Roulette of what your grade would be. Unpredictable and inconsistent overall.
She's genuinely very kind and cares a lot about her students. It's also very obvious that she LOVES the material that she's teaching and it makes the class much fun. Gal knows what she's talking about.
Such engaging lectures where every student seemed to have a chance to contribute. She creates a very welcoming class environment which I really appreciate, and she really respected the TA which was nice. Not much heavy reading and the novels were great. Might be more work than you anticipate, though
Really good reading list! Lectures are discussion style so ask a question, class answers before moving on to the next topic. There was a lot of missed opportunities with analysis and its usually superficial. Assignments take a lot of energy even though she says they are easy, she hints to do creative projects.
I have taken 2 other courses with her that I enjoyed, but oml 401 was a disaster. This is a language course more than an Engl course. Translations are hard and sometimes the prof messes them up in class, tests were to be completed outside of class time and took 45mins and I ran out of time on all of them. Lots of work required outside class time.
Very nice and led pretty good discussion-based lectures. A great reading list! Beware that the assignments are more creative rather than straightforward papers, so if you're not into that maybe steer clear.
This course was on the "Haunted House". The books were great. However, the assignments were quite unique and it was hard to know what she was looking for from students. The rubrics were very general and it was not clear what was expected. Professor McKenney was very pleasant but her grading seemed harsh and nit-picky. NOT an easy elective.
I really appreciated the format for the papers that McKenney assigned. Rather than relying on large, cumbersome papers, she assigned a number of fairly short papers throughout the semester. Stay on top of the readings and pay attention during the lectures and you'll be fine.
Pros: some good books Cons: boring lecture, wont answer emails, thinks you have time for 100 pages a day ,assigns very small word count for assignments but says you should have explained more, THE WORST final exam of all time.she had apparently forgotten what we were taught all semester and gave 40 questions like:who was skinny?who had long fingers?
A review for 307, did not enjoy this class whatsoever. Marking was unequal across the prof and Ta's discretion. Way too many lengthy readings which was unmanageable alongside other classes. Though this is a mandatory class, it lowkey sucked.
Grading was ridiculous it was unfair. Readings were unbearable I was reading 24/7. Lectures were unhelpful focused more on the author than actually analyzing. Asked us why we didn't close read in the midterm even though she didn't ask us to do so. Very unorganized learned more from my TA than I did her. Has favourites
Odd duck. Had to take 3 courses with her, and overall averaged out to like an A-, I guess? No idea what she wants; talking during the lecture feels like a bad idea because you're giving away what your essay will be about, and the sources always detract from the primary readings.
Although the class itself was enjoyable, I did not have a positive experience with Dr. McKenney. She was not professional when it came to responding to inquiries through email, and always rushed after class to leave. When it came to grading papers, she marked very tough and did not follow the provided rubric. She took the fun out of poetry!
All in all, prof. mckenney is a good instructor but the problem is your grade is heavily weighted on essays and it also does not help that she is a pretty tough marker.
ENGL 253.02 Poetry. Won't let me input the right #. Lot of reading from assigned book. Much harder than other junior english courses but grading for the essays was easy (which made up ~70% of our grade including an in person handwritten final exam component). Caring and kind professor very accommodating. First test (15% multiple choice) also easy.
Did Engl 253.02. Wouldn't take this class if you think its going to be a fun class. Jenny lacks time management skills and takes 40 min to do one poem while leaving 10 min for zooming through 5. Expectations were also unclear as she wanted you to be "creative" but then docked marks when you didn't objectively understand what he poem was about.
The poems taught in the class were very abstract, often using swear words, or being audio poems of a person screaming. I was hoping to learn about poems that are more thoughtful - which was not the case. This prof does not want her students to succeed. She is hard to reach and lacks clarity when grading. I do NOT recommend taking her class.
I was very disappointed by this course, but more specifically by the lack of professionality of the professor. At office hours, she would ask me personal questions about my future endeavors and would try to discourage me from pursuing them. If you need an English requirement, please, please reconsider taking this course. Engl 251 was way better!
Engl 253 - poetry. She was not clear in her grading of papers. Her classes were very boring and she was hard to contact for help. Would not take again.
I should have looked at this professor's reviews before taking this class. I agree with each one, except the positive ones that were probably written by the prof herself.
Do not recommend this prof.
Quite disappointed in her poetry class.
For ENGL 429** I enjoyed McKenney's poetry class; however, your grade was very dependent on how you did on an essay worth 40% and a P/F final. Her lectures are interesting and she obviously cares for students but I think the course could be revamped for better success.
Although she's a bit disorganized, I really liked this professor. Very friendly and accommodating so long as you're obviously putting in some effort into attending class and doing the assignments. Verdict from English majors I've talked to tends to be more positive than the reviews here suggest, so if you are one, strongly consider taking.
Although this class can be harsh on how she grades the papers, she does give good tips in class and in her feedback. This is an introductory course, which in my opinion is quite fairly done for what it covers and since it is in the English department. If you are not strong in English, definitely learn how the prof wants things written!
Very surprised by the positive comments on here... Professor McKenney knows how to take a hard-working student and tear them down. Even if you try to take the feedback she gives to improve, good luck - you will need it!
Beware. Nice person for sure, knowledgeable, interesting lectures. But tough grader.
2.5 tbh. Lectures were interesting and readings would've been enjoyable if she wasn't such a hard marker. Said she doesn't often give As. She's a nice person, but the final exam especially was very specific. Random small details from the books/lecs I couldn't remember because they were…such insignificant details.
Really nice and is very knowledgeable. Although she can be a hard marker, once you get to know what her expectations are its not impossible to do well. And she is very helpful if you reach out with questions. I learned a lot and my writing really improved. However, beware her tests are really hard because they are specific.
253.02 - for a class on poetry, this felt a bit too rigid. The variety of poems were either super traditional or absurdly abstract, with a lack of normal modern poetry. We spent a lot of time (often one whole lecture) on one poem. The grading for the essays were unreasonably difficult, especially when the poems we had to write on were abstract.
While McKenney is nice she is rather discouraging of exploring ideas outside of what she believes to be the authorial intent of a book. She used words like "missing the point" and "taking the text too literally" when you attempt to examine outside her own interests. Her lectures about using the library and finding sources were rather good though.
Engl 253- poetry. What a joke of a class. She marks without a proper rubric and will dock marks if you are too specific or not specific enough. Make up your mind
Compared to the other intro English classes at U of C, this one was a huge disappointment. The poems were interesting but lectures were very boring and McKenney is a tough marker. Also, it was hard to get in touch with her to learn and improve for future assignments. (Engl 253)
As a person who has taken their fair share of ENGL courses at UofC, this class was HARD. For a 200-level she was super tough on grading. I have taken higher leveled English courses and performed better with the same quality of work. As an intro class, her grading is super intense.
I've never met a professor more discouraging than McKenney. It is a bit concerning that the University allows professors to fail more students than to help them succeed. Every classmate I talked to complained about her grading and the lack of clear feedback. I recommend taking a different intro English class with a different professor!
Took English 251 (poetry). I've never taken a worse English class - felt like a waste of money and time.
Do not recommend her
Very tough marker, no clear guidelines, no opportunity to improve.
I did not believe others when they said many people drop this course- should have listened to them. I've seen "A" students withdraw from this course or achieve a near failing grade. It is unnecessarily difficult and McKenney does not grade well.
Honestly, I didn't have a choice. She was teaching most of the English courses, so I had to take her and every time, I hated it. If I'd taken her in first year, I probably would have switched majors, thinking all English professors were like that. Thankfully, that isn't the case.
