So-so quality of teaching. Works hard, but is not very compelling. Her heart doesn't seem to be in teaching, maybe research is her thing.
Interesting course material, passionate about early American History. Brought doughnuts for the final. The tests are a little rough, but doable.
Dr. Pulsipher is a great history teacher. She is definitely very passionate about colonial American history and know everything about the subject. She requires a lot of reading, but if you study, tests are very straightforward - gives good study guides.
She is a great teacher. Tells it like it is. You know what is expected and the class load seems a perfect balance of reading and writing. You can tell she enjoys what she does and it helps.
She always has fun video clips that help you to understand. The tests are difficult, but there is a curve. She is very passionate about history, which makes the class interesting.
She is a fabulous teacher and lady. I loved how organized her lectures are and she is just a great teacher. The American Heritage course is hard, but she makes the work enjoyable and feel like it is worth it.
If you like history, you'll probably love her class. it is hard but well-explained and usually entertaining.
Lecture is very entertaining, she has good teaching skills. The class is hard but every AMHTG class is hard. Read, attend lecture, and labs. The reading is reasonable. It is graded on a curve
I thought her tests were ridiculous. I love history but the tests were very hard.
Cool lady- she truly does make the lectures interesting and difficult to fall asleep in. The TA's are great. BUT...the tests are the bane of my existance. I studied hours and hours (intensely) for the last one and got a 67%. But like I said, good class. One major paper and another smaller one based on 10 service hours everyone must do is all.
The tests are basically impossible. Go to the review room A LOT. Otherwise, if you like watching video clips during class, her class is where it's at!
Dr. Pulsipher is great! Her lectures are interesting and she is just a really nice lady. I didn't think the class was that hard. You have to study for the tests, but they are doable, and there's not much work other than that.
Lectures GREAT. Labs ok. Quizzes every week on reading material/lecture notes, so READ that book. I read the book like crazy, took notes on it, took tons of notes in lecture, read them again and again, and only through that was I able to get a good grade. It's hard, use the TAs, ask them lots of questions. Start early on the Rights Paper!
She helps discover the problems with the country while still motivating you as a student to help and make the country better. Amazing professor. If you have to take American Heritage, take Dr. Pulsipher.
Excellent professor, good class. Atleast scan the texts and ATTEND the lectures. Tests are fair.
Bell curve. Hard to get an A. Do all the readings (multiple times?). Weekly quizzes in labs. Take really good notes both on the power point and her side comments. It'll all be on the test. She really loves teaching and has good clips to illustrate various points which is helpful.
There is a lot of writing invloved (two 8-10 page papers and six other 2-5 page papers) but in the end it helps boost your grade. The only problem I had was that we had to write out papers within certain topics, none of which interested me that much. But Dr. Pulsipher is very helpful and knowledgable, and my writing did improve.
Pulsipher is great! She kept me motivated in class. Her tests are essay, but that gives you the power to show her what you know. Outisde class she is so nice and always willing to help.
Great teaching. Chalenging but very interesting and clear teaching.
Too much information to learn at one time. Be sure to study longer than seems necessary. The tests are ridiculous, but definitely show who studied and who didn't. Take good notes and go to lab.
Her lectures are really interesting and She uses a lot of clips and good examples to explain.
She is such a great teacher! I loved going to class. lectures are easy to understand and really intresting. go to your labs, read and you will be alright.
She's awesome. She is very clear and understandable. The film clips are the best! Study for lab quizzes. Study hard for the first test. The second test is a lot easier. Write the papers well. You'll be fine. American Heritage requires studying, but it is doable. Don't freak out about it. It really isn't that bad. Its my favorite class so fa
Pretty good teacher. She shows some pretty funny clips in class sometimes, and the movies you have to watch are pretty good. Study for the tests and it's okay. The class is curved, so...be wary.
I loved this class! She is such an eloquent speaker and she really knows her stuff! She adds media clips of popular TV shows and Movies and really tries to make the class fun. I am not a history person, but this class made me want to be one. I loved going to this lecture.
GREAT TEACHER. straight teaching. I am not a history person, and even though i am an international student, she kept me REALLY interested in American History. Papers are easy to write, exams are hard, at least for me, but they are nicely curved for everybody.
She is a great teacher. She does a great job at getting the point across. Tests aren't as scary as everyone makes them sound. I would love to take another class from her!
interesting lectures. the clips make it worthwhile. the TAs help some too. go to the review room before tests and study with someone else.
Very enjoyable to listen to. Enthusiatic about the subject.
Dr Pulsipher is very knowledgeable and her lectures are amazing. I looked forward to going to class every day, which isn't like me. I did very badly on the tests because they were hard, but i've never learned so much in my life. it made me want to learn more about history and make a difference in american society. take it from her... definately.
She is awesome. Lecture was really interesting and she is very good about answering questions. A good TA will make all the difference for you though. READ the assigned text attend lecture and study, it is not a slough class. At least not if you want to do well.
I Really enjoyed attending her lectures, but i absolutely hated the tests... they were impossible. I def recommend taking this class later on in college. i made the mistake of taking this class my first semester of my frosh year and it was the biggest mistake. This was the hardest class i have taken so far in high school and in college.
dito on Pulispher. Go to the review room everyday and discourage your other classmates in your lab to do well. All you have to do is get a better grade than them and you'll get an A. This class is hard and competitive.
Fabulous professor! Lectures are amazing. It's a hard class, but not impossible. Tip: type your lecture notes same day after class and add the extra you remember. Study all areas: lecture, notes, power points, and text. Use your TA. DO the reading. Tests really are fair. I recommend taking it after you have a couple semesters under your belt.
A prof who is very in tune to how students learn. She shows news and movie clips during class which help make it even more interesting. Very good teacher-- labs do help-- stay up on current events-- go to the review room-- and read the book, the tests really do come from the book.
Insanely hard. You have to have a deeper understanding of history and application than what is taught to do well. My studying patterns fluxuated hugely during the 3 different test periods-from almost none to 20 hours a week-and my test scores were within 1% of each other. She's well educated but... tests are random and you have to get lucky.
Pretty much the worst class imaginable. I did not like this class at all. The lectures seemed long and most of the time boring, the tests were way too hard, and the class was way too time consuming. I read and studied more for this class than any class I've ever taken and did worse in this class than any of my others.
Go to class, read and write the papers. Simple as that.
Dr. Pulsipher's lectures were great. I loved going just to take it all in. Read the book and attend lectures. Get with a study group for the test and you should do fine. The hardest thing in this class was Current Event questions on the quizzes. I thought they were unpredictable.
Boring Lecture. The TA was good though. If you have questions, talk to the TA's not her, they are easier to understand mostly, just another boring GE
Whatever. She's awesome. Great class! The first test is difficult, but the others are easy! You just got to apply the terms to the questions. She is an awesome speaker. She is very knowledgable. One of my favorite teachers at BYU!
She made the subject as interesting as possible. Supposedly they've changed the layout of the class to be a bit easier since I took it. She uses lots of visuals, including Monty Python. The class depends on your TA and how everyone else does(graded on a curve). Not too bad of a class, unlike everyone says, but I like history.
The class is totally on a curve which can get a little ugly. You MUST know your stuff for the tests, they are tough. The lectures are alright and you can tell she enjoys teaching histroy.
AMHTG is hard, but she is your best option- it's easier to do well in her class. I'm not a fan of history, but she keeps her lectures interesting with media clips, so I didn't think AMHTG was that bad. Take detailed lecture notes, and you should be fine- if you can, use a laptop so you can have her lecture right there when she moves too fast!
Comparatively, she's a lot nicer than other profs. She's the one who teaches 3 international students section. she has some extra credit works, exposure to social activity and all. her tests are bomb though, hard to survive. still, she's lot more preferable than others.
She is very knowledgeable about colonial history. She required a lot of reading and her exams were a little difficult. If you take her class stay ahead of the reading. Over all I would say it was a good challenging experience.
Excellent teacher. Lectures were interesting and helpful. No tests in this class, just 2 research papers and a few very short papers. If you have to take History 200, take it from her.
She is an amazing professor. Very easy to approach during or after class. My roommate died during the semester and she was flexible in allowing me to catch up. I would recommend her class to anyone.
I liked the material we studied, but she and the TA were unfair with grading. She was so specific about random details. Also, it was impossible for her to answer emails. The TA was the only reason I did well in the class. There were only a few assignments, so each was weighed pretty heavily. The assignments made the class less enjoyable.
I really enjoyed Dr. Pulsipher. She really knows her stuff and she will prepare you for all of your other classes. Difficult? Yes, but it really pays off. I would take another class from her anytime.
awesome class and amazing teacher. she is very respectful and so helpful.
Narrative History is amazing.
Really interesting class. I was not looking forward to taking this class, but it was way more enjoyable than I thought it would be. It was hard: lots of papers; but Dr. Pulsipher is extremely fair. Harder than other 200 teachers I've heard, but worth it.
I knew how to write a research paper before taking hist 200 and felt like 75% of her hw was busy work. I have a 3.9 GPA and am a junior so getting a B in her class was difficult for me, but I took too many hard classes that semester. If you take her, I would suggest not taking her at 8am. She is interesting and very nice but can be a hard grader.
She is amazing, but her assignments don't teach you much.40% of your grade is in the hands of her interesting TA grader... scary! She gives way too many assignments. If you don't want your smile turned upside down, take hist 200 from someone else: (
Good teacher, GREAT speaker, well-organized, very comprehensible lectures and fair tests. I also liked that she was always willing to consider the other perspective and not ridicule it, even if she didn't agree. A good choice for anyone looking for a good American Heritage Prof.
I was terrified of American Heritage, but if you do your reading (which admittedly there's a lot of) you'll do just fine. Gives great lectures, VERY objective, amazing at presenting both sides of an issue even if she has a strong opinion. The only hard part is keeping up with the reading.
Prof. Pulsipher is a great teacher. Her lectures are very understandable and she is very straightforward. Its a Freshman oriented class so its not too hard. Tons of reading but thats a given. Tests are tough but do all the reading and study hard and you'll do fine. TA's are really helpful. I really recommend taking American Heritage from her!
She's a great teacher, very easy. Only one assignment which is pretty simple. She made american heritage fun even though i'm no good at the subject. Good lectures. As long as you have a pretty cool TA you're set.
She really knows what she's talking about and makes sure we do too. She is very clear and covers just the right material. The tests can be hard but not if you've been paying attention and actually care to study.
Fact of life: American Heritage sucks, people don't want to take it, but it's a GE so we have to. That being said, Pulsipher did a good job of making the class at least interesting. She uses a lot of modern day examples and lots of video clips to keep you interested and focused. Tests are hard, 10 required service hours, 5-7 page research paper.
I am a totally History guru so if you like history this is the class for you. Dr. Pulsipher is a great teacher. SHe includes a lot of clips in her slides which are fun to watch. Take really good notes and you should be fine. Use the textbook to clarify the things she goes over in lecture.
Dr. Pulsipher is a great teacher. She explains things well and her in-class clips really help illustrate her points. Tests are hard but if you keep up with the reading and study (flash cards are helpful) then this class will be no problem. Awesome teacher and great class. Highly recommend.
I think that the people who actually liked this class got a grade higher than a B. This has got to be one of the hardest classes I have taken ever! I studied for this midterm 3 hours a day for 3 weeks. I got a 65% on the test. Thank goodness that other people did worse. This class is designed to weed out the freshman who cant handle college classes
Amazing professor! she's very knowledgeable and has a passion for what she teaches! The course itself is rough so don't expect an A and the tests are crazy! Read the book and study your butt off and its not too bad.
I love American History, but even so, Dr. Pulsipher managed to make all subject material boring and dull. Even the "mandatory" movies outside of class managed to make me fall asleep. Tough class, and not all that worth it for a GE. I would highly recommend taking from other profs. if possible.
Professor Pulsipher is really knowledgable but doesn't teach in an exciting way. This class was extremely boring. The lectures were pretty useless and seem easy but the tests are ridiculous. Memorize the book, lecture slides, and all packet readings. Definitely wasn't worth it-I would try to find a different teacher.
She's not terrible, but I never felt like I was learning. The tests are insanely tough, but if you have a good TA, then you can do just fine. It always irritated me that some of the details she gave were incorrect. That especially annoys me because I really like History.
The class is very hard because of the rigorousness and comprehensiveness of the tests. Pulsipher is a decent lecturer but isn't phenomenal. There isn't much humor in here lectures; she is down to earth.
This class is pretty time consuming and the tests are a challenge but I loved this class. I have learned so much! It is different than any other history course I have taken because of the different focuses that Pulsipher stresses. It is important to attend classes and labs. I enjoyed learning and the TAs are wonderful! It is a great course!
She's generally an interesting teacher -- the class is just terribly boring if you aren't extremely "history/economics/politicalscience" minded... If you're going to take the class I would suggest her, but either way you should have taken AP History in high school -- it would have saved you a headache.
I hated this class. Professor Pulsipher is very dry and boring, and if you get a TA that doesn't grade very easily, say goodbye to an A. Tests aren't too bad, if you study, but overall the material is purposeless, vague, and boring.
Dr. Pulsipher is a great professor and her lectures are very clear. She explains everything and shows clips and examples. The class isn't easy though- you have to spend time, work hard, read, and study, and if you do that an A is possible!
I learned a lot of good stuff from this class. A hard class, but if you read, use the review room extensively and (i didnt but it'd be extremely helpful to for some) study in groups, you can get an a
Professor Pulsipher is really nice. Her lectures are easy to understand and she adds fun media clips and trivia to the Power Points. Advice: read the material and use the Review Room! There is a lot of material covered on the midterms and finals.
Professor Pulsipher made a difficult class as enjoyable as she could. The slides were crystal clear, her examples were interesting, and she played funny video clips to make her points. The class itself was hard, but Professor Pulsipher helped get me an A!
I think Dr. Pulsipher is a great professor! She is very qualified and loves the subject matter which makes it interesting to learn. It's a demanding course, but if you study it's doable.
How to get at least a B in her class: Go to the review room and ask the TA questions about the reading. Do ALL your readings. Take notes in class and review them every week. Know every concept inside and out. Do all your assignments and get the TAs to check them before turning them in. Don't freak out, I got an A in the class, it's possible!
Tests are kind of tricky if you don't study that hard. Don't memorize the facts as much the concepts. Paper is pretty easy, and TA's are useful in labs. Read the textbook and you'll do great.
Professor Pulsipher was great. She is brilliant, and I learned a lot of things from this class that have stuck with me. Classes are interesting!
Very knowledgeable. The class was very structured, if you do the readings and understand the major concepts you will do fine. I didn't particularly like this class, but had to take it.
She very opinionated, boring, and just not a very good teacher in general. I felt that all she wants is for the class to listen to her. Her grading system is very harsh, and if you dont write what she expects to hear than you will be docked heavily for it. Plain and simple TAKE SOMEONE ELSE.
Dr. Pulsipher is one of the best professors I have had at BYU. Her lectures are thematically and chronologically organized, straightforward, and focus both on significant facts (insofar as there are any "facts" in history!) and broader, pertinent questions. The assigned readings were well worth the time invested. Excellent professor. Thanks!
You think you know the material, but even with studying it seems like the tests are on the stuff that wasn't hammered at you all semester. Interesting material, but definitely a freshman killer.
Professor Pulsipher is a great teacher, especially considering what subject she teaches. The tests really aren't as bad as everyone thinks.
Not a difficult class if you invest time in studying the textbook thoroughly and are interested in political science. She made lectures entertaining and rarely boring.
Great class for anybody interested in American politics. I didn't think it was hard at all, but many people did. I think as long as you spend a lot of time thoroughly studying the textbook you can get an A.
Excellent Teacher! I enjoyed this class a lot more than I thought I would. The tests are pretty easy, just keep up on your reading. She does a good job of applying historical instances to modern day situations. She shows arguments from both sides.
She does a pretty good job teaching considering how awful the class is. She makes things interesting & is probably the best for AHTG, but the tests are KILLER. They test you on the nitpickiest things in the world. When the average for the tests are 65%, you know the tests are too hard!! Time consuming, difficult and boring. Good luck!
Pulsipher does excellent job teaching this course. It is a HUGE class, but she does make it pretty interesting for having 700 people in a class. She connects the history to modern day events and uses a lot of clips from modern news stories to help connect ideas. It is important to do the reading, and the class isn't what people made it out to be.
Her lectures were pretty interesting usually. The tests sucked bad, but you can't really get out of taking this class. Study, go to lab, and just do your best. I honestly could have tried harder, but I don't really like AHTG. I did like her though. Not that fun of a class.
Is a great professor and really does a good job making the material relevant to your life. Actually enjoyed the class a lot. Make sure to get a good TA.
American Heritage gets a bad rap, but I found that Professor Pulsipher did a great job of making it interesting and entertaining. I loved the clips. Really, the tests are not bad if you do the reading.
Her lectures were actually kind of interesting, I was surprised. She shows a lot of video clips which helps keep the students attention. Tests and Finals are challenging because they are more conceptual than memorizing facts. Really nice professor though.
The lectures were interesting, but the tests were really hard, manageable, but hard. My TA was clueless and useless so make sure that you get a good TA because they will have a big influence on how you do in the class (especially the weekly quizzes you have in labs.)
Good prof. If you go to class, the labs, and do the reading, you should do well in class. The MC tests actually make you apply what you have learned, but they aren't that bad. It has a reputation as a "hard class" just because Freshman are taking it. It is really about an average compared to the typical university course.
Here's how I got an A in this class: read the assigned reading before class, paid attention in class, and went to reviews before the test. Do these things and I guarantee you will do great. :)
Though required writing classes can be a slog, professor Pulsipher is a great teacher. Really smart and easy to work with. She really respects quality writing and so she'll put a lot of focus on voice and style, but that made me a better student.
Beware: This class does NOT transfer to other universities as history credit. As with many classes, one should work hard, but this class is pretty nit-picky for exam purposes. Unfortunately, if you plan to graduate from BYU, this faux history class is required.
Dr. Pulsipher's lectures are not the most boring you'll find, but in many classes a lot of time is wasted by her liberal commentary over current events. Note that this is in regards to the semester immediately following the 2016 presidential election, so this may not apply to other semesters, but it got old quickly.
She's a good teacher and an interesting lecturer. To me it doesn't really matter who your professor is, but more on your TA. I would say that you need to know how to apply concepts for tests well. I would consider her to be one of the harder American Heritage teachers based on her requirements for the course, but no American Heritage class is bad
Dr. Pulsipher is a woman to to be respected. She wants you to learn the material, not just know the material. Because of this goal, the class is a bit more difficult, but you receive the high quality education you are paying for. She has reading assignments every week that are long and are critical to the exams, so be prepared.
Dr, Pulsipher is a good lecturer, though it does sometimes feels too scripted. This class is difficult, particularly for a Freshman class. Do ALL the readings, go to every class, get feedback on tests and essays, and you'll do fine. A lot depends on your TA, but the class curve nullisifes this. Two short papers, 3 difficult tests, 10 service hours.
Professor Pulsipher is a good professor. Lectures were interesting and I was able to learn a lot. However, she was not afraid to show that she leaned very liberal.
She gives about 7-10 large reading assignments per week with very specific quizzes at the end of the week. Absolutely no lecture slides are posted anywhere, and she blows through them in class. If you get distracted for one second you'll be screwed on the test. Also, tests are very opinion based and she is very liberal in her teachings.
She is a great person and good professor. The tests are brutal! Throughout the semester you read a couple dozen different things from letters to the constitution. In the tests she pulls sentences from these articles and you have to match it. It can be any one of the articles. That's the hard part. But she's a great teacher that knows her stuff!
Test averages were in the mid 70's. The two papers were on very obscure topics and were graded harshly. The weekly reading is extremely time consuming (and you need to do it all to do well). She is extremely liberal and is not afraid to show it both in lecture and on the tests.
I'm from Nigeria and I loved every minute of this class. Sister Pulsipher is such an amazing teacher and person I gained analytical thinking and critical reading skills that would be useful for the rest of my college career. I would take this class again and I highly recommend to anyone who actually cares about school and wants to learn something
You actually can't judge an American Heritage professor too much because they just give lectures and outline the curriculum they want to cover, but really your TA has a lot of power over your grade and experience as well. Prof Pulsipher gave great lectures though and was very passionate about the topic so it wasn't too bad.
American Heritage is a huge class, so it is very difficult to interact with Dr. Pulsipher, but do the reading, work with your TA and go to reviews and lecture and you'll be fine.
Class is hard no matter what, avoid if you can. She is a good professor though! Just INSANE amount of reading and tests were way hard. Utilize info from TAs!!!! The curve is decent
Professor Pulsipher is seriously the sweetest person. I really loved her class. History 200 is hard because it is a writing class, but she was so great to work with. There is one big research paper and some other assignments that lead up to it. The class is structured really well. Basically every assignment prepares you for your final paper.
This class was hard yet enjoyable. It's mostly on you to learn the facts by reading before class. LOTS of primary sources to read and analyze, and the tests make sure you did with an ID section. Class is more conceptual than fact-based, so you'll need to get good at historical analysis/writing. Dr. Pulsipher is kind and makes class interesting.
Professor Pulsipher was a good teacher teaching a boring subject. I rarely went to her lectures because most of their content was already found in the readings she assigned. I still managed to get an A- despite this, however, because the assignments were very clear and easy to get full points on (mostly responses to the readings).
She wasnt very engaging in her lectures and unfortunately theres minimal information at best in her powerpoints. One TINY book required for the class and a lot of outside docs which are uploaded. Short paper and longer research paper required+digital dialog responses+midterm+final. Midterm/final are entirely short answer/essay based.
Professor Pulsipher gave interesting lectures and had great pictures in her PowerPoints. I appreciated that she taught us how important it is to find reliable sources. I wish more papers would have been graded throughout the semester so I would've known how I was doing.
Pulsipher's class wasn't spectacular, but it wasn't very hard. She had take-home tests and weekly homework assignments. The textbook readings were pretty long but you could skim them to do the assignments. Lots of in-class discussions, unfortunately sometimes political. Pulsipher is nice though and good at explaining things.
Her lectures were thought provoking and she was good at creating an opening and welcoming discussion environment for people of all sides of the political spectrum. She had multiple drafts and peer reviews for essays .
She is very kind and easy going. There is not much home work in the class. A few essays. The problem is that she gives the same grade on every assignment. For no reason at all. I emailed her once asking why I received the grade I did, and got no response. That is unacceptable to not respond to a student's email in a fairly small class.
This class was an amazing writing class. In all my other writing centered classes, the professor picked the topic for you. In this class, she gives you a range of things to choose from, so you actually get to write on what you want. She worked with her students and provided good feedback. You'll become a better writer in this class, so I recommend.
Professor Pulsipher is amazing. She cares about the topics she teaches and is accommodating.
