Honestly Hocutt is a good professor for cal 3. The HW is tough, throught and consistent, but if you get through it and understand it the tests are easy.
Homework is pretty taxing and the test reviews are large and immensely time consuming. Not an incredibly difficult class, but nowhere near as easy as many of the other professors (he also doesnt offer extra credit or bonus like many of the others). Other options are better
Tests are online via WebAssign and are easy if you do all the homework and review until you understand it. All of the lectures are posted online, but I recommend going to class so you can stay on top of the material. Don't look for short cuts. Homework is about 2 hours a night.
There are lots of homework. The time to complete these vary, but take roughly 3 hours to complete. Beginning of the semester homework is every night during the week, but it slows down as the topics get longer. Online tests. He records lectures so you can rewatch them.
Great lecturer, nice guy - really willing to make time for you outside of class. Homework is thorough and prepares you for exams well.
Dr. Hocutt's the absolute best Math teacher I've had my entire life, bar none. He gives excellent lectures and is extremely helpful during office hours too. He's a really spirited teacher that wants you to learn and succeed, and he's hilarious to boot! HW takes 1-2 hours average, work on them and the tests are a breeze. He made Calc III a blast!
He gets off track very easily. The homework has problems that we have never seen in the lecture, and the tests have problems that we haven't seen on the homework. I went to every class and got very little out of going because he gets sidetracked very easily.
He is a great professor. He is passionate about what he teaches and really cares about his students. The hw can be a lengthy at times, but if you do and understand the problems, the class will be easy. He also makes reviews for every exam which aren't mandatory. If you go to class, understand the hw problems and the review, the tests are easy.
Hocutt is a great professor. He genuinely cares about whether students are understanding the material, and will go out of his way to ask students' opinions on how he runs the class (and then makes changes if needed). He adeptly explains the concepts in the class with visuals and relatable examples, and the tests are simple if you do the homework.
Genuinely cares about students understanding the material and making the best grade that they can. If you don't understand something, PLEASE go to his office hours. He makes himself very available and really wants students to ask for help if they're having trouble. Goes kinda fast during lecture but puts everything online. Good at covering material
Tries to make calc 3 as interesting as possible, and makes jokes to liven up the boring lecture topics. Listens to class feedback and adjusts the lecture style accordingly after each test (does more examples, less examples, etc based on how we feel).
Professor Hocutt is one of my favorite professors I've had at UA. He's a pretty rare combination of both passion for his subject, and being able to teach it clearly. He wants students to understand over anything else, and tests were always perfectly fair and never tricks. He was always happy to help, even when I got behind. High recommendation.
Very nice person who genuinely cares about math and his students learning. Offers multiple hours a week for asking questions about assignments. Homework due every other day but its needed to learn the material. Study guides given for every test and final super useful. Dont fall behind on material, as it builds on itself throughout the semester.
Definitely my favorite math professor. You can tell he genuinely cares about his students and their success in this class. He explains concepts very well, and records his lectures so you can watch them online later. Overall a great teacher and great guy. Highly recommend taking him.
Calc is a hard subject all around, but he explains the material very well. There are four exams, the final, and weekly quizzes. All you have to do is take notes using his print out guidelines and do the test reviews. I would highly recommend him for any math course. You will actually learn and retain the material. Laugh at his jokes.
Tests contained questions that were dissimilar to the study guide despite the study guide being 40 questions. Records all his lectures at least.
I took Hocutt for Calc 3. A solid choice for a calc teacher. Is willing to work with you outside of class if needed. BE SURE to study the test reviews thoroughly before the tests because the same questions from the review are on the test.
He can explain the matter thoroughly, although what he teaches isn't on the homework and expects you to figure it out, unless you go to his office hours, but there are tons of questions that aren't in the lecture with no solution; also said problems are on the test that have a 50% chance of being related to the study guide.
I really wanted to like him. His notes are very simple, but hardly cut it for the difficult hw, definitely not for tests+quizzes. Reviewing WA Test1 w/ him was no help. But the nail in the coffin for me is how he talks to the class, like we're all lazy idiots. Maybe you wouldn't get emails begging for EC if you offered any at all or graded easier!!
A truly great professor. He cares about his students, and above all, their learning. I got so much out of this class. You wont regret!
A tough class, but I learned a lot from it. I really appreciated the weekly quizzes he gave, they helped keep you on top of the material. I wish I could have had him for all my calculus courses.
Cal 3 is a tough class, but Hocutt made it easy to understand. The material starts off easy and gets much harder as the semester goes on. If you take notes in class, do the homework/test reviews, and ask questions, this class shouldn't be too difficult for you. He's always accessible outside of class as well.
Hocutt is an amazing professor for Calc 3. He explains all the topics very loudly and clearly (and doesn't rush through material) and doesn't make anything more complicated than it is. He takes attendance almost every day, but he also posts his lectures online, which is very helpful. Honestly one of the best math professors I've had,
He now does weekly quizzes, even with a 100% test average, still couldn't keep my grade above a 97%. Not worth even trying. Don't bother emailing him either because he won't respond to you. Probably the rudest and most arrogant professor I've ever had. He talks down the class, rambles til 2 mins past, & stares at anyone who leaves a few mins early.
Explains topics in multiple ways for different learners (i.e. proofs, bringing in old topics, or just rewriting equation in every problem to remember). Lectures seem long and he jam packs them, but helpful to do the examples with him. Lots of homework, but do it (do it right too) and you'll pass even if you don't pay attention in class.
Dr Hocutt is one of, if not THE best math professor I've ever had. He's very responsive to class feedback, and gives lectures that are easy to understand. The content of Calc 3 is not easy, but he made the course a very manageable A.
Great teacher, who keeps the lectures engaging. Really enjoyed the class and taught it well.
Take Professor Hocutt for Cal 3. He is not only a genius, but he is an experienced teacher who is good at conveying knowledge. Show up, do the homework, and do the test reviews. Bonus points available on every test.
get ready to teach yourself calculus 3 and have fun with it. hocutts lectures will not help you. the homework and test reviews also wont help. if you dont do well tests you cannot count on homework to save you as its only worth 10% and there is no bonus whatsoever. so have fun with that
Hocutt enjoys what he does but he can be boring sometimes. You need to go to class, attendance almost every day. Study for the tests so you thoroughly know the material and you will be fine. Homework can be excessive. you need to study, the final screwed my A
Dr. Hocutt is definitely the one to take for Calculus 3. He does a very good job at teaching the material, and if there is something you don't understand he is more than happy to take the time to explain it to you. You definitely have to work hard to prepare for the tests, as the reviews by themselves aren't enough to be prepared.
Hocutt was definitely a step-up from my Cal 2 professor. He was always very thorough and tried to answer as many questions in class as possible. Sometimes I felt like he went too far in depth into how it connected to engineering and I am not an engineering major so it was kind of irrelevant at times. Very accessible outside of class.
Professor Hocutt is great! Calc 3 is by no means easy but he does a pretty good job of not only explaining the materiel but also connects it to real life. Do all your homework and go to every class and you'll be decently prepared for class (I think he also gives you extra credit for doing every homework assignment).
Hocutt is a great teacher! He's really good at explaining things so that everyone understands them, and is really friendly and accessible outside of class. He lectures from start to finish every day but it's not boring. The tests are pretty hard, but a lot of the problems are straight from the notes, homework, or test reviews.
He is a great teacher and is passionate about this stuff. If you are not good at math, then you MUST do every single homework, in class and test review problem before each test, if you want a good test grade. I never worked so hard in my life for a class before, but I do not blame the teacher. He is a great choice and I doubt any others are better.
You should definitely do the homeworks and test reviews, but in class problems are VERY important to learn how to do. He records all of his lectures so you can return to those problems whenever you want. Great teacher but very hard class.
He puts up recorded lectures and blank note templates so he guides you through what exactly you're going to be tested on. The reviews aren't mandatory but if you don't do them you aren't going to do well, it's basically exactly like the test questions. Hard material but he makes the tests relatively easy considering. No extra credit or curving
Always felt like the tests were harder than the homeworks and lecture problems. The review he posted was always nothing like the tests. He is easy to access outside of class but will check your attendance and homework grades before helping you.
After the first test, I went to his office hours to see what I missed and he told me "you are going to fail this class because you don't have the background knowledge you need". He expects that everyone had already taken physics when I don't even need to take that class and had to fend for myself. Also test is nothing like review. Take someone else
Really knows his stuff and is passionate about it but the class is hard. Gives a decent amount of homework. The tests require you to know all of the examples covered in class and the homework. The tests have lots of multiple choice that take up 30% of the grade. He often makes his own test questions that are completely different and make no sense.
I think he would be a great professor if he didn't have such a condescending attitude towards everyone that he teaches. He pretends like he listens to your problems and tries to help but through extremely sarcastic emails or the complete lack of a reply email he shows that he only truly cares about himself
Have him for calc 3 and its way tougher than it should be. Notes are very simplified and do not actually help bc the hw is way more difficult - it takes forever. Does not make me feel like I can ask questions bc he makes me feel stupid when I do. Notes are often unfinished - he makes you finish the examples? hope hes better in other courses...
This is your warning: do NOT take him. Ive never had a professor be so condescending, ununderstanding and unaccommodating. Homework is way harder than class and tests are WAY harder than homework. No notes are posted online so if you miss it you miss it. Most of the class got
Your grade is based on attendance, online homework, and tests. He replaces your lowest test score with your highest test score, which is extremely helpful. If you have trouble with something, go to his office hours. All in all, great professor, but as is with any math class, you will have to work hard.
He really knows his stuff, but after the first two tests, the class gets way harder and seems only to apply to physics. His lectures are not like the homework, and the tests are not always like the reviews. Also, his response to COVID-19 was just changing the dates on last semester's lecture videos and moving homework dates, so nothing helpful...
Takes two weeks give or take to respond to emails. Has no sympathy what so ever, was dying in a hospital and he still expected me to take a test.
I had him for calculus 3 and Diff eq. I'd like to say that either people like him or just don't like him at all, and I'm the one who doesn't at all. He answers my question in class, however, he does not answer my question regarding my homework assignment, even though the due was passed. The exam was nothing like review or homework. not recommended
Tests are 20x harder than anything you see in lecture or homework problems, and he doesn't curve or let you drop a test. 2/3 of our class failed the first test and he claimed it was bc we hadn't studied well. He's also terrible at responding to emails. Nobody learned anything because there was literally no point, you'd fail the test no matter what.
Ive had Hocutt for both Cal 3 and this but he was exponentially worse in 238 than cal 3. His tests are nothing like the homework, and on the first test only a few people had actually turned in their tests at the time limit. And with how important the tests are for your grade, failing them all because you ran out of time really truly sucks.
He must have changed since the fall. Reviews I read before the spring 2020 semester all seemed positive. Now, all of his reviews are very negative, and rightfully so. He doesn't care about your success in his class. Transition to online classes meant vacation for him. He didn't even make a final exam review, just opened the ones from past tests...
I unfortunately had Hocutt during the Covid-19 ordeal. He wasn't amazing before but after we went online he was one of the worst in terms of understanding and accessibility of all my profs. Pretty much went on vacation. He posted old lecture videos to watch for attendance. Several complained in groupme that he wouldn't email back. Very disappointed
Before COVID he was a pretty good prof, not my favorite. hes been terrible since COVID started. Hes basically been on vacation and just put up last semesters videos. No review for the final, just put the old test reviews back up. Doesnt respond to emails at all. Didnt give attendance if videos were on 1.25x speed. Hopefully all is well with him
I had Hocutt for Cal 3 and I really liked his class and I thought he was a good lecturer who genuinely cared for his students, but when I took this class Im not sure what changed. I still believe he wants his students to learn and do well, but his lectures and homework did not prepare us well for the exams at all. Im just glad its over.
WebAssign tests are awful, but theres no way around them. I actually thought Dr. Hocutt was a good professor until online classes started. A few weeks after taking an exam, my exam grade dropped five points in WebAssign with no explanation. I emailed him multiple times to try to figure out why, but he never responded. Huge lack of communication.
Worst teacher I've had. The pass/fail option was a godsend, but I still nearly failed despite MUCH EFFORT and skill in math... He makes the tests impossible to finish in time, does not work to help improve grades, I ended up teaching myself bc homework was impossible with only the class notes to go on, unaccomodating, condescending, etc etc
The exams felt unreasonably short at first, and I scored badly, but I eventually discovered that I just needed to prepare better. It is very possible to do well on his exams if you practice a lot. Homework alone isn't enough to get the speed you need! Time yourself doing textbook problems and even redoing previous exams to get a feel for pacing.
Dr. Hocutt is getting flak recently during spring 2020, which was impacted by the corona virus. But this is what you need to know about when class was in person: He taught you what you needed to know efficiently and didn't waste time. He makes the test and tells you what you need to study. People are just salty they had to zoom instead of emailing.
amazing professor. he gives you excellent print-outs so its really easy to keep up with the lectures and not have to scribble down the extra stuff. the tests are just like the homework and reviews though they were a bit lengthy. posts his lectures online so you can view them later. he gives you everything you need to get an A.
I have taken professor Hocutt for calculus 2, calculus 3, differential equations, and linear algebra. He is one of the best professors Alabama has to offer and teaches the material in a very clear and understandable way. He also provides reviews that are pretty similar to his tests. I would highly recommend taking his class.
The homework is far harder than any example he works in class and you often spend more time trying to learn how to do homework on your own. Its easier to watch YouTube videos than attend his class as its easier to learn the content and be able to do the homework.
He is an awful professor. Not only was he never there during his office hours, but his tutoring sessions were hosted by college students who knew less than I do. He never responds to emails, and he refused to give me any credit on my homework when I was sick with COVID-19. Overall, I would avoid this professor at all costs; I would swing at him.
He was a good professor in lecture but was very disrespectful and derogatory when students tried to access him via email. He has made quite a few students cry this semester for no good reason...
Solid professor, definitely knows what he's talking about, and really cares for his students. The tests and homework, however, are overly challenging and seem like rocket science compared to the examples in class. All of that said, he was a very good professor and the extra challenge has definitely made me more knowledgeable on the subject matter.
Very knowledgeable guy who is passionate about math. He connects concepts to real-world applications. He knows what he's talking about, which makes the class engaging. His test are difficult, but after the first one, you can figure out how to study- the questions aren't pulled straight from the review, so study in-class notes and homework as well.
Not very accessible outside class, usually takes days to reply to an email. Even then he only gives a vague response that forces you to send him another email and wait several more days. The example problems he goes over in class are nothing like what's on the homework and tests. He'll talk about something with one sentence then put it on the test.
I can't speak to a full semester of Hocutt, but for the bit he was there before he left, i thought his class was interesting, but it goes very quickly, and it's very lecture heavy
Had Hocutt for the first half of the semester and learned much better through him than his replacement, even though my grades improved following his leave. Excellent explainer, but the nature of the class is difficult. He definitely makes you work to understand something when you do not. Does not tolerate B.S.
Hocutt is intelligent and knows the material but he is not very helpful in general. His office hours are usually cancelled because he has too much on his plate. Not to mention he does not give much review before tests and is just a very mundane man. Obviously since it is a math class, there are weekly homework assignments.
Tests were fair and similar to the homework. Lectures were kind of boring and he wasn't always the best at answering questions in a way that made sense. He gave weekly quizzes but warned you about them a few days in advance. He was very nice, and you could tell he wanted the best for us. Ask him for a math fact.
He is good at explaining the material, however, his tests are somewhat difficult as they are made up of only 8-10 questions, most of which aren't step-by-step questions so you'll have to know all topics by heart in order to do good. Also, you'll have to stay on top of the material as he offers weekly quizzes worth up to 15% of your grade.
Hocutt is a pretty solid/average professor. He's decent at explaining new material but could be 10x more effective than how he currently teaches. It is 75% theorems and 25% actual examples, so it almost feels like I'm in English based on how many paragraphs I write per note session. Tests are easy if you have a decent understanding of material
Hocutt is an excellent professor because he is very passionate. He made linear algebra fun to learn, and even though it was difficult and dense with all the theorems and abstract concepts, he did a great job communicating the material. Tests and projects were hard but not too hard--overall good course
He is a great person, but if you miss a single class he does not post his finished notes from the lecture on blackboard. Take his wife if there is an opportunity.
Amazing lecturer and teacher, but prepare well for the tests. I got an awful grade on my first test because they have a very short time limit. Despite that low grade, I was able to make it up with extra credit and the other tests. While others may scare you with horror stories, know that you WILL learn a lot as long as you are calm and prepared.
Professor Hocutt is a great honors professor, but this is an incredibly difficult class. He teaches a lot of information per class and doesn't post notes, so any missed classes can cause you to fall behind quickly. He will tear apart your work on tests and in office hours, but it's very evident that he wants all of his students to succeed.
Should do asmr. Responded to emails extremely late and was not helpful. Made mistakes in the lectures and did not correct them until 30 minutes later.
Very interesting teacher. I was not a fan of the projects but they were doable and he graded easy on them. Class is all about matrices so get familiar with them. Great guy!
Great professor, clearly cares about the students and their success. You definitely need to go to class to succeed, and there are weekly quizzes. Everything is pretty straightforward if you go to class and pay attention, would highly recommend Hocutt.
I love math but this man made me hate it. I've taken linear algebra before and done well but he made it impossible to understand what the question was asking and going to office hours doesn't help either. He would constantly say wdym you don't understand, and well I guess you just can't do this then. He can't TEACH!!!!
Cares about his students. Great professor. If you go to his office hours he will help you so much. BEST MATH PROF HERE. He is passionate about teaching and about the material and it shows. Take any math class with him!!
Professor Hocutt is very knowledgeable about the course and the content. His lectures are sometimes long and rarely engaging. He writes on blank notes so and doesn't upload them. All tests are online, quizzes are in class, and attendance is taken randomly once a week. He never responds to emails but is willing to sit and help you if you ask him to.
Attendance is taken randomly once a week, doesn't matter though because you need to go to class for the pop quizzes and to take notes since they are not uploaded. Very good professor for this class, 10% bonus on homework for doing 24 hours early. Tests are on webassign.
This guy is terrible. Hey does not communicate, I sent him numerous emails throughout the semester and he did not respond to a single one of them. He grades his test extremely hard and does not offer any type of guide for the test. 0/10 avoid this guy at all costs.
Hocutt is awful. His tests are wordy and hard to understand. He does not publish notes and he is not effective in his communication. He is not particularly kind to those who struggle in his class. I was a straight A student before his class. He has written homeworks that he grades incredibly harshly. Trying your best is not enough for this class.
Hocutt is very knowledgeable about linear algebra and mathematics in general. I actually enjoyed his lectures and teaching style a lot. However, he makes the class very difficult by grading tests and written homework harshly (often giving 0 partial credit). He never posts lecture notes and does not respond to emails. Mentions calc3 and diffeq a lot
He refuses to post class notes or lectures. The way we learn things in class aren't the same ways we have to do the homework. He explains things so thorough that it gets confusing.Told my class "If you only use the study guide to study, you will fail" which defeats the purpose of a study guide.
Dr. Hocutt was awesome! He was a very clear lecturer and had ample office hours. He's not the best emailer, but is willing to help with any and every problem. He is great with partial credit on written exams and made probability super easy to understand. There's written Hw which is more theoretical and webassign-both are super useful to study!
HIS CLASS IS HARD!! this is by. no means a class that you can skip your way through. Coming from someone who is generally good at math, his tests are hard. the way he explains things is confusing sometimes but he does answer follow ups well. Go to class or fail.
DO NOT TAKE HIM! He is the ONLY teacher who makes student MEMORIZE EVERY SINGLE FORMULA (they are ridiculously long and complicated). Last week of semester he taught unnecessary extra stuff instead of reviewing. Makes your life miserable for the whole semester due to the formulas needing to be memorized. Can't stress enough, STAY CLEAR!!
Took him over the summer & if I emailed him any questions, he either never answered them or did a week later when the question wasn't relevant anymore. Only solved easy problems in the lectures but the hw & tests had hard questions so I had to teach myself alot. No reviews, even for final so good luck. Just don't take him for online summer classes.
He was decent in lecture. I feel like he wastes too much time answering unnecessary questions. You have to do a project for each test that wastes tons of time. His tests were somewhat difficult to do, but the 50 minute time limit was too short for the amount of problems on his tests. The final wasn't bad though. I would just take regular calc 3.
Great professor, explains the concepts clearly in lectures and always opens the floor to any questions. Even though attendance is not required, you SHOULD go since much of the content taught in class is directly related to homeworks. The class requires a couple of hours a week of homework/study, so stay on top of everything and you're set.
One of the most talented lecturers I've witnessed. He can be a little tough on the grading front and a bit intimidating, but I wouldn't take linear with anybody else.
