Lectures in a discussion format. Asks the class questions, if u not enough ppl participate, he takes off points. Doesn't actually teach in lecture. His tests are hard, reading the book isnt enough. Attendance is mandatory, worth 15% off grade. Felt like a 400+ level when it was a 200 level bc of so much uncessary course work. Wish i never took him.
Long powerpoint lectures that are not posted online. Attendance is 'mandatory' and he does this by assigning signed attendance codes. Assigned seating btw that involves a group project. There's book quizzes literally every other day and just a ton of unnecessary, extra work. He's passionate but honestly, avoid him if you can... wish I'd known that.
He Is a prof. who is very interested in his field. However, he gives tons of homework. Quizzes are given every day before class. He makes you sign in for attendance. You cannot miss even one class period. Lectures are long, boring, and quite honestly not helpful for the test. Sweet man, just not the best professor.
He is a professor that obviously cares about what hes teaching but hes very boring. His voice is completely monotone which makes it very hard to keep your attention. Honestly hes a good teacher but his lectures last way too long and he isnt relatable.
He's really knowledgeable as a professor. People dislike his class because they came to college expecting high school level coursework, when we're at a university. Don't enroll in his class if you're unwilling to learn/work. There are tons of pushover professors at UNLV and Dr. Bowling is not one of them.
Absolutely terrible professor. Probably the worst I have ever had. He does not cut his students any slack at all. I reached out to him because my attendance check in didn't work correctly and he had no problem telling me that my grade would in fact be affected by it..
He's a great teacher. Though towards the end of the semester, we had a lot of quizzes to do which I thought was very hard to do. You do have several group projects. You do have assigned seats. Daily participation graded. One big pro is that everything is online and he gives you several days to complete your quizzes. You do have one big paper.
Very monotone teacher with LOTs of busy work (2-3 weekly quizzes, group in class work, group projects, and required volunteer participation w/ a essay to write). Attendance is taken daily and graded. 3 exams & 1 Final. He budgets one min per question. Questions are brand new that you haven't seen on a quiz or in the book,be prepared to google!
Really specific grader. Feedback takes too long on assignments that are not multiple choice. Exams require you to read the book to the point you know it like the back of your hand because you only have a minute per questions on his exam. Kahoot did not help. Simulations were fun though.
He does not discuss what will be on exams or care how the students in classier doing you are basically teaching yourself the entire semester. if you want a good grade in this class do not take this professor he makes the material confusing for no reason.
Very knowledgeable, however, his lectures were way too long and boring. Attendance is required and is graded by the quality of participation. Too many assignments at one time (Volunteering/Research essay, drafting a bill, in-class assignments etc). Would recommend not taking
Most of the reviews about him are TRUE. He did not let it slide when his stupid online sign in system didn't work once for me. Also requires analytical skills beyond the textbook &his slides (which doesn't teach anything anyways). BUT for some of us, this is the first PSC class we've taken. & will ever take so it's extra hard. Extra & stupid.
It's a 5 week course, so it's not bad at all. I recommend taking it online. Technically a textbook is required but not necessary. Your grade is comprised of 4 quizzes and discussions due each week, a paper (about 2 pages double-spaced), and the final. Grade breakdown is : Discussions: 10% Quizzes: 40% Writing Assignment: 15% Final Exam: 35%
So here's the deal with Dr. Bowling, if you're expecting to get an easy A in this class, prepare yourself to be disappointed. Takes a lot of work to even get a B in this class let alone actually being interested. Lets just say 8 packs of sugar in my coffee isn't even enough. The committee group project is also a no from me, 10/10 wouldn't recommend
This class had way more work than what I was expecting especially for an introductory, beginner level course. There are 4 (60+ point) exams, quizzes weekly on the textbook and secondary book, we have to volunteer AND write a 4 page paper on it, as well as do a 100 point in class activity (that has yet to be graded and it was done a month ago).
Professor Bowling is a great professor. He gives clear grading criteria and maps out exactly what is expected of you on the syllabus. He requires you to work for your grade and work like a college student, not a high school student. All exams are online. Textbook was required but frequently used. Don't be fooled by the rating overall I learned a lo
Article questions and weekly quizzes; four major exams and two papers. Doesnt give out perfect scores for whatever reason, made the course harder than it needs to be. The only class I didnt get an A in. As he would say, problematic.
Extremely boring lectures but he knows his stuff. A lot of assignments and quizzes and volunteer work.
DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH HIM. You are required to attend, however, if you do not talk you lose points. The weekly quizzes have questions you cannot find in the reading. He has some problems with giving people 100%. You will not get 100% in his class. He will grade papers unnecessarily hard because "the department is not tough enough on papers."
Professor Bowling likes to stretch 45 minutes worth of material into 1:45 minutes every class. He goes into unnecessary detail on irrelevant subjects and he often loses the classes attention. On the last day of class he ripped the students for lack of attention throughout the semester, refuses to take accountability for lack of teaching skill.
Professor Bowling makes the class super easy as long as you come to class for points and read the text. A lot of extra credit opportunities such as highest group of Kahoot or attend any political event. He bumped my grade from a B- to A- just from extra credit. Quizzes are straight from the textbook.
Professor Bowling is one of the best poly sci professors. He is easy to get in contact with and explains the material very well. My only critique is that Professor Bowling isnt the best when it comes to papers (it takes him a while to grade them and his expectations are never clear) and unfair when it comes to grading participation.
I took this as a 3 week course for the Summer. It seemed there was something due every third day but it was a 5 week class crammed in to 3 weeks. 4 or 5 discussion posts, you reply once & then peer review 2 other posts, 1 paper, 4 quizzes, 1 final. Wasn't too bad - Dr. Bowling gives feedback which I appreciate and grading was clear with a rubic.
I wish I never took this course. Professor Bowling is one of those teachers who makes you read the fine print of material and will stick technicalities into quiz questions just to make sure youre paying attention. Extra credit is a must if you want a good grade because nothing is ever good in his eyes. He doesnt give credit where credit is due
Boring
He uses a flipped-classroom which means you do 3+ hours of work outside of class and then you go into class where he "discusses" (straight lecturing that he thinks is a discussion) it with you for almost 2 hours. It's honestly a waste of time and I would not recommend him. Get another professor if you can because you probably won't pass his class.
Very intelligent and knowledgeable in his field but very boring. Things that could be fit into a 45 minute class he stretches into 1h and 45min class. Lectures the entire time, a lot of homework outside of class. He gets a bit snappy if you leave to go to the restroom. He has his funny moments but they are sparse.
You gotta go to class bc he takes attendance... He is very boring, however is really knowledgeable in his field of study. His exams are pretty difficult if you do not actively learn in his class. Lots of homework... I spent almost every day this semester doing something for his class. Not impossible to get an A in, as long as you stay on top of it.
Easy A and an online course. Professor has vague rubrics, and rarely gives 100s on the discussion assignments. However, quizzes are very easy (as its online) and the final was very easy as well. Professor is not good at getting back to emails, and you have to really try to contact him. Took him a week to reply to me. Not sure if I would retake him
Very lecture heavy, everyone zones out and is not paying attention. Makes you read the book and do the homework before the lecture for that chapter. Only goes though extra credit very briefly once in the beginning of the semester and doesn't say anything about it till the very end. Everyone ends up forgetting about it. It is a lot of work.
Professor bowling has a flipped classroom and it honestly did help a lot with actually learning vocab and the material. Does have a few projects along the semester, but they are nothing hard. Does require you to read textbooks and do modules, but it is nothing that will not be on the test. Easy A if you actually work and study for the class.
This class really prepared me to manage my time, especially with the work he gave. It's a lot of reading material and memorizing the information, but it's important to learn the material because it's not only useful for the class, but in the real world. The three exams are online and the chapter lessons are on web campus. Inquizitive is helpful!
His instructions for just a 1 page essay at 3 pages long. His instructions are contradictory, his examples don't flow with the instructions, and you can even tell through his text how poor his tone is and filled with contempt. He is rude through email, doesn't grade essays or exams for a month after they're submitted. And, a TON of writing !
Though Bowling is very knowledgeable, his tests after every chapter felt more like exams. The "tests" happened around every 2 weeks and it would have around 55 questions with 50 minutes to complete it. So you had less than a minute on each question. And for attendance, he has a quiz @ the beginning and end of class with its own specific code.
Yes, he checks attendance, but it won't damage your final grade much unless you plan on actually never attending class. He knows the material and has organized the class well, but the lectures are a bit dry. A standard course that'll teach you basic college survival skills. If you can follow directions and memorize well, you can easily get an A.
Idk why this guy gets paid. It's a 4 credit class & he does barely any of the teaching himself. His lectures are monotone & boring, & he tries to be funny but it's just that dry white guy humor that rubs you the wrong way. It's a flipped class so you basically teach yourself & on top of that there's a pretty substantial workload. Goodluck! 0/10
Dr. Bowling is something else. He assigns way too much things and if you are a nursing major like me, it is very annoying to have a class like this and try to focus on Microbiology. He assigns things like we are gonna become part of Senate. He assigns homework the day exams are due and the day after exams. Its too much it is ridic. DO NOT TAKE HIM
For a 101 class he makes it incredibly difficult, all exams and quizzes are applied knowledge rather than clear questions. He gives an unreasonable amount of time for quizzes and texts, averaging less than a minute per question. Incredibly lecture heavy and dry. During COVID-19 when we switched to online classes he created MORE assignments :(
This guy has us writing a 5 page paper on Volunteer work. He also puts us in ASSIGNED SEATING with 200 STUDENTS. we do a group project and says "none of u should be getting 10/10" for peer reviews. Its a broken scale and a fixed system.
Overall ok guy. Ok professor. He is very repetitive of all this material. U r graded by: quizzes b4 and after class for attendance, 4 online exams, and participation. Yes he takes attendance, u can not show up lectures dont really apply unless for the exams/tests. Talk to him to get on his good side. Be kind to your peers they help grade u.
I was warned not to take a class with Dr. Bowling, but I did it anyway because I need to graduate. Dr. Bowling definitely cares but this entire class was a blur. No clear grading rubrics, feedback, or direction. Papers (which he assigned a ton of) got graded 2 months after you submitted it. I wouldn't recommend him but I wish him all the best.
Good: The tests are all online, the transcripts for all modules are uploaded, so if you put two and two together you should be getting an A+ on all tests. Bad: Unfair grader, will grade you at a 90/95% despite meeting all criteria just because he "doesn't believe in giving 100%" for written materials. Discussions graded very poorly and unfairly.
This class has a heavy work load. The class has a weekly essay due, an annotated bibliography, and a literature review manuscript. Not to mention the weekly quizzes and unit exams. The class is interesting and the format of the online course is solid. However, dont expect to have an easy A, the essays are graded really hard.
So much work! There is something due at least 3x per week. Even with the book, the lessons are difficult. The answers to the questions are never easy to find. The essays that are due weekly are tough. You may think you did well, but I can never get more than an 80%.
I honestly don't know how I got an A. The in-class lessons and homework are easy but very time-consuming. The tests are okay, just mainly pulled from homework. The final project is where I had a problem. I didn't feel like he prepared me enough to put all the concepts together and conduct my own analysis. The project is also weighted HEAVILY!
This course took more time and work than any of my other courses. It was ridiculous to have THREE quizzes a week! I think a quiz a week is ok but not every other day. Many of the small assignments seemed quite pointless and they did not help with the exams. Also, I did not feel like I could reach out to the instructor for any assistance.
I would give 0 stars if I could. Save yourself time and energy and take the course with a different professor. The instructions are unclear and he never takes the time out to clarify. Be prepared to devote most of your time to this class as it is very work load heavy. He's also a tough grader but never specifies what is it he's looking for.
Online discussions are worth more than tests/activities which I did not like. Coffee talks can be helpful to get more info on the material provided. He keeps good communication through canvas. I don't think there was a clear grading rubric on the discussions, and it can become confusing/frustrating.
This class is asynchronous and online, and I thought it would help with my schedule. However, a majority of my schoolwork is because of this class. Every week there is a discussion we have to go to three times and three quizzes. Instructions for assignments are long and unclear and is a tough grader. Avoid this class if you can.
Dr. Bowling treated my lower division as an upper division course. Constant writings and for an online class very frequent due dates (about every other day). The end of the semester was finished by a large writing assignment that took quite sometime to do. Tough grader, he thinks we're all going for our doctorate and should be at his level.
His assignments are very time consuming. Although I like how he makes attendance fair for everyone. Honestly very tough but at time fun class. He did end up teaching me a lot and I am more interested in politics.
Overall, great class! At times lectures were a little boring, but it taught me a lot about the subject. Also Inquisitive is a great resource!
Professor Bowling is a chill guy. His lectures were boring but it mostly cover on what is on the test and quizzes. Be prepare for a class project because he makes assigned seats, with the people you are siting next to will be your group. Some people don't show up and he doesn't do anything only work it on your own. He wants students to participate.
Weekly reading from 2 textbooks followed by quizzes on both textbooks. He makes lectures interactive with polls. I think the large tests are easy and there are many study guides on Quizlet to help you study for the exam. All the questions on the test are the same as the quizzes and come from a set bank.
Doesn't give good feedback and does not grade in a timely manner, it takes a month to get a grade back. At that point, you have already turned in a month's worth of papers and it's too late to learn from your mistakes. He doesn't tell you what you did wrong he just marks poor on a rubric. A LOT of work with no actual teaching done.
I personally enjoyed Dr. Bowling's class. The quizzes and tests are not bad if you keep up with the reading. His lectures were engaging, especially if you're interested in history/politics.
I honestly enjoyed the lectures and information presented, but it may be difficult if you are uninterested in politics. At the start of each lecture, a new code will count toward attendance and grading. Everything is mostly online, such as quizzes, exams, and reminders, but be ready to read and keep up with the work! Easy A!
Overall, not too bad. There is quite a lot of material, but a lot to fall back on if you do miss assignments. However, he doesn't grade til really late. You won't know your true grade for weeks, and by then it's hard to fix it.
I am in 5 upper division political science classes currently and not one came close to those demanding this lower division 211 course was. There was an assignment due about 4 days a week and he have no useful feed back. He would not grade assignments until it was too late to learn from your mistakes. This class in no way sets you up to succeed.
Highly knowledgeable but dry. You have to sign in and out of each class otherwise you lose participation points, which is bad if you're late. Ending class early almost never happened. Also berated the class for low participation rates, which was true because it was much smaller than the usual size but still he could have been more encouraging. . .
I had to drop the class in the first week because professor didn't seem to care about the other classes I had, and had a pile of homework due once a week for his class.
This class was okay but demanded SO much time even for a 4 credit class. The exams are online but reasonable because it is based on homework so there are no trick questions. My least favorite part was the way he took attendance u had to sign in at the beginning and end which was annoying if u missed the code by one minute which I usually did.
All the guidelines for our essays were extremely vague. Grading was very nitpicky and rarely did anyone in the class receive full points on an essay. A LOT of busy work, but not necessarily hard work.
Lectures were pretty good. If you're even one minute late to class you're absent. 2 assignments and 1 quiz a week. Easy work just very time consuming.
Lots of reading and weekly assignments, but hands down an amazing lecturer. There is one paper that you have the semester to work on, and occasional group assignments. Lecture slides are usually posted online, so write or read over it beforehand. He explains things more in depth during class, so write down what he says (helps with studying)
Professor Bowling was boring. He's a nice guy, but didn't know how to engage students as a teacher. Work wise there were 3 assignments due each week and they were pretty easy, just time-consuming. His lectures were the most boring part because he would talk about the same slide for 30 min straight. We would never get through a full unit of slides.
He was easy to contact and replied fairly quickly. The lectures were very boring and hard to listen to but he does grade attendance. The class itself wasn't too hard just very tiresome as there was a lot of work and reading that went along with it.
I had this class at 8AM, and this class can be a lot. The lectures were very boring, and Prof. Bowling didn't engage with his students a lot. Don't slack off with assignments and you should be good.
It's an okay class. Lectures can be very long and boring, but it is boring content. Professor try's his best to keep everyone involved but it's hard when you're teaching a subject like this. Quizlet will be your friend throughout this course. Just show up, do the assignments, and you'll get an A.
Don't take his class unless he's the only class you have that sem. He has daily assignments, journal reviews, exams, long quizzes, hours of videos to watch, and a capstone project.
We have all encountered difficult professors but I couldn't help myself but warn others about this class especially if you aren't majoring in PSC. There are way too many assignments due almost everyday for a lower division class. The part that really gets me is that some of his assignments don't unlock until the day before its due.
This guy assumes everyone is a highly motivated Political Science major. Way too much work for a course of this level and he makes too many assumptions about the knowledge you will already be bringing into this class. His estimates for the time that should be spent on every lesson are often way below reality.
Do not take this class unless you want to work on assignments for 2-3 hours a day. There are assignments everyday except Sunday. He expects a lot from his students and thinks we are all Political Science majors. He does not understand that many students have a life outside of his class.
DO NOT TAKE HIM. He grades this 200 LEVEL as if you are a PhD candidate. There is no concept of a 100% in his class, you will never receive a 100 on anything. Even HIS examples of great work are not even 100% to him. No matter how hard you work, he WILL find a flaw in it and grade you HARSHLY for it.
If you enjoy suffering, this is the class for you. He shows little to no empathy or understanding for family emergencies, other responsibilities, and technical issues. There is assignments due everyday except Sunday that he swears takes 1.5 hours. Takes me 3 days. This teacher is the reason why I contemplate quitting school.
Out of all of the political science professors in the department this individual is the worst professor. I have taken political science classes over the summer, which are at an accelerated pace as they are five weeks long, this class is harder. Absolutely miserable, there is no light at the end of the tunnel for your grade. So sorry if you have him
This professor takes up so much of your time. There are WEEKLY essays, quizzes, research project assignment, and 4 part discussion. Please do not waste your time. Take a professor that understands the course they teach, instead of this professor who assigns as if this were a masters level course. Also grades so incredibly harshly.
This professor makes this course absolutely miserable. Please save yourself and pick anyone but them. Anyone.
PSC231 online: Read a chap every Mon (30-80pg) write an essay on it every Tue, answer 4 discussions Wed, do the chap InQuisitive by Thu, do the discussion replies (2 of them) by Fri, and nearly every weekend you'll have a long complicated assignment "preparing" you to write a literature review. It's not worth it if ur a nonmajor, take it in person.
This professor is so difficult to contact unless you make a virtual appointment. He's unclear about word count for ANY of his assignments, even after asking him directly, so I had to wing it the whole semester. Actually his assignments are pretty unclear overall. Got an A by the skin of my teeth. My sis went to the in-person class and got an A easy
You will spend 10 plus hours a week on this class. So difficult and time consuming. Use your time better for your other classes, because this prof thinks his class is the only one you are taking. This is not even a 400 level! So time consuming for a 200 level. Absolutely terrible.
Bowling's method of teaching is as follows: Throw mountains of essays, journals, videos, and lit reviews at students...if they dont retain it, oh well, if they die from the amount of work, oh well. Dont expect feedback or guidance if you do poorly either bc hes about as available as he is lenient (which is not a lot, obvi). Just dont take his class
The amount of pain I went through in this course, just wow. It made this semester an absolutely misery with the CRAZY amounts of workload. Essays, quizzes, more essays, research assignments, plus more. This professor should not being teaching. The worst poli sci professor at unlv, every psc major knows to avoid him at all costs, for obvious reasons.
Once a week there was an intense paper and this was consistent for the 7 weeks the course lasted. There were so many quizzes. Save your sanity and take a different constitution course.
Worst political science professor at UNLV, maybe even the worst on the west coast. So difficult for no reason and gives negative and vague feedback. Save yourself at all costs, avoid this guy.
SOOOO difficult for a 200 level course. Terrible feedback and a harsh grader. He literally marked most of the class off on the discussion as we accidentally used the wrong pronouns for this author of a research paper, like come onnnnnn man... No one can read your mind dude, please stop being so harsh.
Terrible. Harsh grader on assignments with unclear instructions. He assigns a huge research paper that is harder than any 400 level PSC course paper. At all costs, avoid him please.
Prof. Bowling likes to curse in order to fit in with today's age group, but after a few times, it loses its charm. He is incredibly strict on attendance, and if you do miss a class, be prepared to have a doctors note or a note from the morgue stating that your grandma, in fact, passed away and you were gone due to a funeral. Super heavy on reading.
Dr. Bowling is a very good instructor. His assignments are all clear-cut and he doesn't seem to set out to make students miserable. He tries to keep lectures engaging, but in an intro course with 200 people (and few actually in the major), it gets hard. Homework heavy, but incredibly bearable. He clearly cares about the course material.
He cares about participation and wants everyone to engage in lectures. He was not that strict on grading (in my case). Don't be like me and skip since its 10% of your grade. Assignments which are easy and done under an hour. One peeve is that you have to refer to him by "Dr." in your email or else he'll make you send another one.
Terrible professor, terrible person. This guy needs to stick to research, and stay away from students. It is very unfortunate that he is allowed to teach.
Oops, just saw that I gave this guy a 5/5. I meant to rate him a 1/5. But maybe that 5/5 will help him out considering that he has almost 50 ratings at 1/5.
AI saved me in this class. This professor is impossible. Avoid him.
Bowling is a harsh professor, choose someone else to save yourself from misery.
This class was painful with this professor. He is a terrible professor and it is shocking that is his still working here.
Overall, not a difficult course if you review the book chapters before class. The online program used for this class to conduct homework/class work provides feedback and refers you back to the chapters. The only thing that is a little hard to overcome is the lack of energy and engagement--super lecture heavy.
Straight pain. Save yourself and avoid him.
The GOAT. Hilarious and long lectures. Can be boring. Lots of reading for homework. Tests are based on info from readings.
Professor bowling isn't as bad as most of the reviews here but isn't the best either. The textbooks are long and the lectures are uninteresting but he is a very qualified teacher and I learnt alot being in his class. He gives a bad example paper for the two short essays but most assignments are clear and he goes over the weeks assignments often
I wish I could tag more awful descriptions because this is one of the worst professors. He is incredibly rude. Even though I have passed his class, he is the most disrespectful of them all. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Talks a lot. No devices
This class was a nightmare with this professor. Tons of work, unclear feedback, and a painfully harsh grader. But Unstuck study was a lifesaver for study prep. Avoid at all costs if you can - this class will make your semester miserable.
He genuinely has to be miserable if he expects paragraphs on paragraphs to get a 100 on an ICEBREAKER. Do not take pls save your time
I took his PSC 403R class and it definitely covers a lot... There is a lot of homework, but it is pretty guided with the readings (2 assignments during the week est. to be 2 hours each, and 0-2 assignments on weekends est. 4 hours each). Class participation is graded and attendance is mandatory. Overall he is a nice guy.
Dr. Bowling is a really down to earth instructor and cares if students learn the material. There is plenty of time to get help outside of class. For this specific course, the TA handled the grading for discussions and papers. It definitely felt like a "nobody gets a 100" situation. Straightforward quizzes and tests, just read the textbook.
This professor only allows handwritten notes or notes written on an iPad. No laptops are allowed. His class was hybrid, so most of our work was only done online, as well as tests and exams. Class participation is required and affects your grade if you don't contribute to conversations. Not a bad teacher, just harsh and doesn't want to connect.
AVOID, super harsh grader, he won't give you good feedback, read the rubric like it's a bible, taking this class was miserable, do not take
Don't let anyone fool you, he is terrible. Avoid him at all costs.
Run away from ever having to take a class with this thing!
I was miserable, not a good professor.
So so so bad. Avoid this professor
BAD. All over bad. When asking for help or clarification, he just tells you to make an appointment or see outside help at UNLV. He grades heavily, if not up to his standards, but has the same effort as the next student, you get a lower grade.
Overall bad. Just in every way. When you ask for help he pretty much does not care and says “make an appointment”. So you make an appointment and nothing changes. Be ready to dedicate a LOT of time to his classes. Really strict grader. Following the rubric is not enough. If you follow every aspect you will still not get 100%.
good looking dude seems like he got his life figured out.
Jeremy Bowling is a great professor if you think exactly like a middle aged white guy who lives only for textbooks. When asked questions where the answer is no one knows, he will go on a random tangent instead of actually answering the question.
There is a reason why this guy has 63 1/5 ratings. Terrible. I'll leave it at that.
