I LOVED Dr. Chandler. Favorite professor at UTK so far. Try not to skip because he is VERY clicker heavy, but the clicker questions rarely counted for accuracy. Besides clickers there are only tests and online homeworks, so keep up with the homework and study before the tests and you should be fine. Not hard info. Labs are also super easy!
Dr. Chandler is the first teacher i have had that i could actually pass biology with also i have taken him for bio 101 and 102. Although attendance is not mandatory i would go! If you study his power points you can at the least make a B. Also he is more than willing to work with you and help you only if you are willing to help yourself.
Dr. Chandler is a great teacher! He grades attendance on getting clicker questions right, so work with the people sitting next to you. Grades mainly come from tests. If you study his power-points and read the textbook, you should be fine. He sometimes brings his dog to class, and asks for volunteers in class for help with experiments.
The class is based off of lectures that are 100 slides long and theres no time to take notes ever. The tests are really hard and the grades are not posted on canvas for a very long time. The only thing that mostly gets graded are the tests and the other assignments are often just left there. He never replies to emails either
Dr. Chandler is the best! I would take him for every science class if I could. He truly cares about his students' success. With COVID-19 this semester, he made changes to the grading scale, making the final only count if it helped students. To be ready for the tests, study the objectives on the posted lecture slides! Don't hesitate to ask for help.
He goes really fast in lectures, so if you have notability I would use it to record them. It typically takes him a few days to respond to emails, but he has an open door policy for office hours and he is SUPER helpful if you go to that. He's such a nice person, but do not let that fool you the exams are def difficult and you need to study.
I had him while the pandemic was going on so therefore we had class on zoom. But with Dr. Chandler he didn' do zoom calls and would only post lecture videos. these videos were each 2 hours long so when preparing for the test we knew nothing. This wasn't just my thing being confused for the test, but my entire class, haven't taken the midterm yet a
Professor Chandler is a nice professor who does indeed want to see you succeed. He shows enthusiasm when teaching, although his lectures are rough. He goes very fast and the notes aren't all that great. Although i failed every test and still made a B+ in the class. As long as you do your work and put effort in, you should be fine.
Listen, everyone likes to complain about how hard this guy is but if you're smart and you know you're smart don't sweat it. I put in my bare minimum all semester and ended with an A. If you're not smart then that's tough and I guess you'll have a difficult time understanding this.
God bless America, this man's exams are awful. I failed every single one of them, regardless of how hard I studied or how many office hours I went to. He's such a nice guy and is clearly very knowledgeable, but I would never take a test of his ever again.
No. Just no. Beware when people say each lecture is him reading off a PowerPoint with over 100 slides, never giving you time to take notes, over explaining material to the point of confusion. Also have felt unprepared for all exams, but at least he curves them. Class is mandatory and you will just be lost the whole time anyways. Saving lives here
Professor Chandler is hands down one of the best professors here at UT. He is beyond caring and truly cares about you learning about biology. He respects his students greatly and will give you opportunities if you are struggling. He offered my class online while it is in person which was amazing.
The tests are hard but he curves them a lot! It helps! Definitely can end up with a B but an A is harder to get. For me at least!
This class is definitely a hard one but only if because its a n intensive science. If you do the work and apply yourself you can get an A. Professor chandler is a great professor though. I did not like the class itself but he is great. He cares about his students and helps when you need it. Very engaging and a great professor
Dr. Chandler is very does his best to interact with his students and make class enjoyable. However, he is the kind of teacher that gives so much homework as if you don't have any other classes to work for as well, and he drags out his lectures. He will randomly post new assignments when you thought you were finished for the week. Good Luck.
Professor Chandler isn't the hardest professor around. Never got more than a 70 on an exam (consistent 50/60s) and currently have an 81.97%. He posts the notes on Canvas (+ recorded lectures). Just be semi-present for the clicker questions whether in-person or on Zoom and just press a button. Those are probably the only thing that saved my grade.
Overall, I enjoyed his class. He is a funny guy and the class is pretty fun. However, the tests are not easy. If you don't go to class, you will likely not do well. He also does not go over content more than once so you pretty much only have one opportunity to let it sink in. There are lots of assignments but none of them are that hard.
Did not enjoy this class. I did the readings, and I did all the work, and I still struggled tremendously with all the tests. Tests were extremely hard and much of them were over things we had not went over in class. He moves through the material far too quickly. Nice guy, but would not recommend his class.
Dr. Chandler is very knowledgeable in his field and connected well with students. However, I felt his class was very difficult for a gen ed biology. The lectures and tests (multiple select) went very in depth, where the lectures and textbook did not prepare me with a strong foundation to build on. Check canvas daily for pop up assignments.
OFFICE HOURS! This class is hard, the exams are all open note/internet but they're difficult. He is very knowledgeable and goes fast. He offers many simpleish assignments to bring up your grade, they helped me a lot. GO to his office hours. He is a great, kind, understanding prof; he will help you if you ask. Watch the videos posted for each module
Professor Chandler goes extremely fast in his lectures. It is so hard to keep up with him, so prepare to copy down his ninety-slide slideshows as preparation for exams. His exams are extremely hard as well, so you need to prepare really well for them. Simply taking the notes will not cut it. He does curve massively at the end of the semester.
Do not take bio 101. I passed with a good grade, but it was torturous and I did not enjoy one bit of it. Would never recommend this to even my worst enemy. Lectures suck too. Labs are the only slightly fun thing.
Dr. Chandler is a really nice guy and is clearly an expert in his field, but I felt like Bio 101 was insanely harder than an introductory biology class should be. His lectures move very fast, and I don't think I made above a C on any of the exams, even if they were open note. I wish I had participated in office hours.
This class way too difficult for a 100 level bio class. The exams are open note and online, but the most difficult exams I've ever taken even after studying. I made better grades on my organic chemistry exams. Clickers are graded for accuracy too. Exams are also set up very unfairly; can't go between questions/not enough time.
Dr. Chandler is a great guy who wants his students to succeed but my god is this class hard. His lectures move extremely quickly making it near impossible to take everything in, and the exams are open note but very very difficult. There are many opportunities to earn back points, but it is a lot of work.
His lectures are so interesting. His exams are unreasonably difficult, everyone found them hard. Them being online and open notes are misleading. He has tons of extra assignments to boost your grade. Ask him how to take efficient notes because he goes fast. Fun class, lots of effort. BioLIT was with a TA, pretty easy just go to group tutoring.
He moves really fast, I failed every exam and still did well. The lectures did not make any sense but there is a google drive that he posts them in.
Jeremy Chandler is a very nice guy and works to keep things interesting in class but moves way too fast during lecture. I understood less than half of what he taught during lecture and would have to go back and look at the slides again myself. Tests were all online and open note, but everyone agreed they were incredibly hard for no good reason.
He was very difficult, and very slow on grading, but he was fun and had lots of energy.
I hate biology, but Dr. Chandler made it slightly bearable. He has a lot of energy and really loves the subject. He will help you if you need it and tries to make the class fun. If you have to take biology, please take Jeremy Chandler because he is truly such a great person.
The tests were unreasonably difficult. They were open notes and online, but that didn't make them easy. He is full of energy and makes his lectures funny, but he goes way too fast. There's no time for questions or to even try to understand what he is saying. He does offer a lot of extra credit which I believe is the only way I passed this class.
Chandler was a great professor, and the lectures were interesting. However, the online multiple choice exams are so difficult, and the average is always around a 60, but he typically curves them. He also always assigns 2-4 assignments every Friday, along with DQPs after every class. I would recommend someone else if there is a better option.
He moves through the lectures quickly but if you get the notes from the powerpoint he sends out you will be fine. The exams are tough and no one does too hot on them, but they are online and open through the weekend. but there are corrections and little assignments throughout the week to buffer the grade. Just get the work done and youre fine
He had a zoomsgiving for those who couldn't go home, or just wanted to hop on. He gives you chances to do corrections on your exams, and you get two chances on quizzes. The class is lecture HEAVY, but you can follow on pointsolutions if you dont want to go to class. He drops your lowest grades and wants you to succeed.
I loved Dr. C but class is very difficult. Lecture heavy up to 100 slides and tests are unreasonably difficult. They are online and open note, but you are racing against time so them being online doesn't really help. Lots of homework assignments that can help you boost your grade! He's really great and did a Zoomsgiving on Thanksgiving!
i probably showed up to class maybe 3 times and never studied. you can do great in this class as long as you compete all the assignments and show up for lab days. the class is very lecture heavy but i still did fine without learning any the material in class.
Dr. C clearly loves his job. His lectures were super enthusiastic, but he was all over the place. Before he could finish a thought, he would move on to the next thing. The class was relatively easy, but his disorganized lectures drove me crazy. The tests were very hard, but there were lots of homework grades, so I ended with an A.
If you procrastinate don't take the class. He cares about you getting the material done on time. DOES NOT accept late work for ANY reason. Lectures are fast and heavy. Overall for a gen ed class too difficult.
Good teacher, the lectures go very fast but he publishes the slides and they are numbered so you can write it down for future reference.
Chandler really loves teaching, he gives lots of work. Open note, outside of class tests are difficult but they don't kill your grade as long as you keep up with your work. It is a fair amount of work to keep up with, and the lecture is really fast paced. The slides are posted though and he was always available to talk!
Professor Chandler was a great teacher, clearly knows his stuff, and is super smart. This class was a little overwhelming at first, but once you get into it, it's really fine. There are a lot of assignments, but as long as you do them, you'll end with a good grade, I failed every test, and still ended with a B+ lol, so do the assignments.
Dr. C is AMAZING. By far my favorite professor I've had. He keeps the students engaged and involved, makes things easy to understand, and his exams are online and have "Wrappers" so you can get points back. He clearly loves his job and students and I highly recommend him for any class!
He assigns coloring assignments or makes you crush up snacks to "make homework fun" but it just creates more of mess and made me hate doing homework more. He speaks too fast in lectures so you wont be able to take many notes and he doesnt video tape his lectures he only posts the slides AFTER class. And the exams are so hard...even with a group
Dr. C is the best professor I've had. He talks fast in lecture, and there is a lot of material, but he makes class time engaging. The homework assignments prepare you very well for the exams. If you take time to know the material, you'll do fine. He also has an open door policy for office hours, and is very helpful if you have any questions.
dr. c is very enthusiastic about biology and you can tell he loves to teach. clicker points for attendance but same code every day. online/at home tests.
Very lecture heavy, & his lectures go so fast that I gave up trying to take notes during them. I recommend when studying, to try to understand the material instead of trying to memorize it all because they are online. They are still kind of hard though. He also gives a lot of extra assignments but they are really easy.
He has the enthusiasm of a middle school science teacher. We've seen costumes, creative homework prompts, elaborate demonstrations of science, and so much more. He's a teacher that stands out and I think we appreciate him for that. This class was interesting and filled with assignments that boost your grade and understanding. Definitely try him!
This was one of my favorite classes this semester! He had open office hours and was very caring about his students in addition to being entertaining during class. There is a lot to learn, but the assignments are very helpful in learning and lower scored ones are dropped towards the end of semester. Definitely take him as a professor!
Expects you to be studying 10 hours a week, writes heinously hard test questions (even though the tests are open note I still never passed one), expected to read but was unclear what materials went with which units, GOD AWFUL. I only passed because of the lab, shoutout Jessica.
Jeremy is very passionate about biology and making his class as enjoyable as possible. I would take any of his classes again. There is a LOT of homework weekly and the exams are very hard and the lectures move extremely fast, but if you do your homework efficiently you will have absolutely no trouble in this course.
LOVEEE Dr. Chandler!! He is the most funny and unique teacher I have ever experienced. He breaks down things in a way that almost ALL can understand. He is funny, and lectures can get kind of boring due to the content, but he tries to keep the energy up for students. He is great and his class is easy to pass as long as you take notes and show up.
Goes super fast in class but posts notes later. Super super nice and caring, ready to work with you. Tests are online on your own, open note (but pretty difficult). Overall super great professor just a class that requires lots of outside studying/work. Would love to take another class with him.
DONT FALL FOR THE OTHER REVIEWS. Chandler's a nice dude upfront but that doesn't matter if you care about your grade. tests are extremely difficult, despite being open internet and notes. in regard to the questions you'll be asked, don't expect to be tested on class concepts, expect to be asked about 1 tiny sentence in 1 lecture slide out of 200
Chandler tries to be the definition of a "interactive professor". His tests are majority online, however, the questions that he uses make no sense whatsoever. He's constantly forming questions that include some random introduction about how his kids brought him an acorn and then asks a really confusing question. I will never wish this on anyone.
All exams are online and open note. He's very passionate and enthusiastic about biology which makes lectures entertaining. Canvas assignments felt like busy work to me, but were a nice grade boost.
Dr. Chandler is quite quirky, he tries to be interactive but it's awkward. His exams are terrible, there is a paragraph of unnecessary information before the very specific question, but they are open book/note/google. He is available outside of class and is more than willing to answer questions about class material and help with test corrections.
He is nice, but he seems disorganized. His grading system can be a little confusing. The lectures move too quickly. The exams are difficult. He is very accessible outside of class. The homework is not too hard, but it is very time-consuming.
Dr. C is literally the nicest man on planet Earth, but he is just not a great professor. He tries to make the class engaging, but in doing this he dances around what we actually need to know, and it was always so unclear what we were learning and being tested on. His disorganization was very stressful, and he puts in grades so late.
Best professor ever! So fun!
Dr. C is amazing & funny. He tries to make class enjoyable by keeping students engaged. The only downside of his class is that he lectures fast and doesn't post notes until after, making it hard to keep up. His exams are online, but challenging. Definitely requires alot of outside studying to be successful. He's always open to questions, super nice
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. He is an AWFUL teacher. He doesn't teach just lectures in 2x speed for 75 minutes. Every class his slide show is 80+ slides which he expects you to memorize all. The tests are so difficult they are in person & proctorio. The class average for tests are under 60%. He's funny but that's all he's got. Even chat GPT doesnt help.
Awesome teacher, very helpful and understanding, tests were hard but open note at home. Overall very engaging and caring
DO NOT TAKE HIM!!! He lectures 80 or more slides every time sooo fast that you can't write nearly fast enough and end up having to do hours of notes after class. His test average is below a 60% and he does curve and do some test corrections but the tests are still near to impossible. He's funny and that's it. If you want to do well DO NOT TAKE!
Mr. Chandler is a great guy and gives test corrections and curves on tests, but only because he has no choice. His tests are literally so impossible and he has no resources to study. I took him because RMP said he did open note test BUT NOT ANYMORE. They are literally impossible. He goes through lecture so fast and teaches 80 slides a day.
Let's be honest his class is HARD!! Tons of slides per lecture that you can't even take notes on because of how fast he goes. Use Proctorio for exams, meaning no notes, no internet. For an intro class, this is hard. Offers a lot of extra credit. Lab is the easiest part. He is nice and funny but his class is a different story. READ BEFORE LECTURE!
The class as a whole was constantly confused and stressed. Dr. Chandler is kind, and you can tell that he cares a lot about his students and what he teaches Exams are all application-based, and it is difficult to study. We are not given TAs or SI sessions, much less a study guide, making it extremely hard to study efficiently for the exams.
He is a very kind person and he really cares about everyone. He is also so funny! Only thing is his lectures are like 80 slides long and the test are not very similar to the notes AT ALL. You have to spend alot of time out of class preparing but overall not a bad professor.
Professor Chandler was pretty good. Had him for BIOL 101 for gen ed credit. Lectures had a lot of information crammed into the slides. Labs were attendance mandatory. Test were pretty hard, more application over definitions.
Very caring about his students. I understand some students find his classes difficult because he teaches a difficult area of study, but as long as you put in the time to study, you should be fine. High recommend going to office hours or just reaching out if you are struggling; he truly cares and will help.
Dr. Chandler is SO kind&caring. But his tests are the worst. Each test in 101, the class average was ~50. He does curve it and offer corrections, so then it would be ~70. Still not great when they are worth so much. Don't miss lab. And just go to the lectures. He goes so fast its impossible to take notes, but do them oyo. READ THE TEXTBOOK!!
personally this teacher was good and knowledgeable but i was not ready for a single test. each one i would study so hard and still fail. all the class averages were below 60s, the stuff he teachers is not on the on the test
If you are just fulfilling a NS credit, do not take this class with chandler unless you like riddles. His lectures are difficult to follow, don't line up with exams, and the questions on the exams sound like they were written by a DC villain. He gives back points on exams but the averages are so low (around 50) for each exam that he almost HAS to.
Do not take him. He lectures so fast it's impossible to take notes and no teaching. No one passes the tests and the class average has been consistently a 50-60% and he does curve but it doesn't do much. The tests consisted of him showing a video of his children and making some impossible analogy that's hard to connect with the content. Overall bad.
Very difficult professor for what should be an introductory level course. To reference I am an A student, but this class was very difficult to keep up with. Simply knowing the content and studying for hours was not enough. Even though I ended with an A, I would not take this class again. There's a curve but only cause the ave is so low.
Dr. Chandler is a very kind professor who cares a lot about his students, but his BIO 101 course is very difficult for an introductory class. The class average on exams is usually 50-60 pre-curve and lectures are engaging but fast paced and difficult to keep up with at times.
Dr. C cares about his students and is very passionate about what he teaches. He is always happy to answer questions in his office hours! However, this class does require lots of studying and reading if you want to get a good grade on his exams. I still recommend him because he makes class very engaging and fun, but be prepared for lots of studying.
Dr. C is amazing in lectures he is energetic, funny, and keeps you interested in the material. That being said this semester he switched his exams from unproctored, open-note, online exams, to in-person closed-note exams with proctorio. This may be resolved next year tho. He is good about working with students during office hours to catch up.
His class felt so disorganized. The lecture slides would be all over the place and he goes too fast to even be able to type notes, so I would spend so much time trying to take notes after class. The exams are not similar to the lectures AT ALL and everyone I know struggled even when we studied for hours.
Definitely a very hard class with a lot of lectures and note taking. Jeremy Chandler is an overall sweet person and is willing to work with you if needed. If you arent a bio major, or have previous knowledge on the course, it will probably be pretty difficult. The exams are very hard prepare for LOTS of time to prep.
I am a senior graduating in May and took this class because I saw BIO 101!!! you would think easy and manageable. no. test were awful. The only thing that saved me was the fact we had 10 assignments a week to do, he really had no choice but to curve our test, and showing up to lab or I would have failed. dont recommend
I would not retake this class. Dr. Chandler is a great person but the lectures are content dense and most of it isn't on the tests so you spend most of your time studying wasting time. He does allow for test corrections and he curves the exams a lot to make up for how little you know on the exam.
Jeremy is super funny but his class was super hard, especially for a required 101 class. The labs are fun and help your grade a lot, but tests are difficult and require a good understanding of the content and application. Clickers are used throughout every class and he goes through slides quickly so be ready to have to do notes outside of class.
Dr. Chandler is great! He wants all his students to succeed and is always willing to help. The class pacing is fast. There are a lot of assignments to be done outside of class. He does clicker questions in class so attendance is somewhat mandatory. I had trouble knowing what to study for the COL's. Lab assignments saved my grade.
Very lecture heavy. He does incorporate a lot of class group work which I wasn't a fan of.
He cares deeply about bio and has a great personality, but his class moves very quickly and you'll end up having to study for days and days for the exams. He is easily accessible for help, and gives a lot of simple assignments to bring your grade up. Overall easy class, except for the exams.
Teacher has the worst course structure I have ever seen. Attendance basically means nothing because he rambles on for the whole class then gives no assignments to test your knowledge. He gives you the lecture slides to study which don't help at all and I couldn't even open them to study. He basically leaves you in the dark until each "COL".
Worst class structure of any course I have ever seen or taken. He gives little to no assignments and practically zero study material. What he does give you to study cannot even be opened and reviewed. It felt as if I was left in the dark up until every exam because of the lack of assignments to test my knowledge. The lab portion was a good time.
Dr. C is a cool guy. You can tell he loves science and is knowledgeable of the subject. His class is difficult and requires a lot of studying. The tests include things that were be briefly mentioned which sucks. But, lectures are accessible and you can go back to study at any time, which is important because he does move quickly in class.
Just so much work in his class. Exams sometimes include things never discussed at the lectures. He rarely finishes his lectures and always runs out of time.
Professor Chandler is very sweet and has a bubbly personality! HOWEVER, I never studied so hard in my life and still got extremely low grades on my exams. For an intro class, it's way too difficult. He is very sweet though!
He gives you insane amounts of discussion boards that make 0 sense at all all due on one day. I have 9 discussion boards due on the last day of classes that are dumb.
this class was hard yes but i think he gets a lot more hate then deserved. this class is required for the nursing majors and if you cant handle this class you shouldn't be majoring in nursing. i managed to get As and Bs on all exams. he does give assignments that sometimes don't relate to the course itself but it helps boost your grade a ton.
Dr. Chandler is a good professor who gives challenging exams, but he balances them with extra credit and test corrections after each test. I liked his teaching style and the steady pace of assignments that related to exams, which helps keep grades from dropping on exams alone. The class is challenging, but doable if you stay on top of the work.
He's nice & funny but the workload & tests were crazy. He's really smart but teaches like we are on his level & way to fast. He'll say something once & it will be on a test. Test questions are confusing and there is no reason a 101 class should average 50 on tests. He has to curve the test so much it will move like 10 points. I didn't learn much.
You can tell he cares about what he teaches but he expects us to already know everything. He puts a lot of information on the slides and goes very fast in lecture and then expects us to be prepared for the exams. The class averages are like 50 on the exams and that should be unacceptable. He is a sweet guy but he is not a good professor.
If you have the option, don't take him. His lectures are very dense and although he tries to make the class fun, it's awful. You can study as much as possible and still bomb every tests because he includes random pictures of his kids and tries to apply them biologically? Literally makes no sense.
He is a very sweet person, and you can tell that he really loves what he does, but he moves so fast in lectures, and I feel very unprepared for every exam. After the curve, I end up doing okay on the exams, but if you talk to other people in the class, they feel the same way. Exams are really hard and cover so much that we briefly went over.
He moves very quickly throw information that you need to know and provides nothing for you to study. Keeps tests locked after completing them so you can't go back and learn from your mistakes. He is a very nice guy, but not the best professor.
Great person, but not a great teacher. No test preperation or study guide material. Lab portion CARRIED MY GRADE in this class. Always go over textbook and slides before tests because he gets most material from there. Curves the tests and allows for test corrections, but most people average a 50 per test.
I've taken higher-level bio classes, and this one felt less organized. Dr. Chandler is nice, but his teaching style didn't click for me. He moves quickly through the material and relies on analogies from his personal life that were confusing and didn't connect. They also showed up on exams. He also never showed up for our meeting outside of class.
