He was the best!! Calss is easy you write 2 big research papers on basic you pick topics. midterm and final, essay form, and he gives you questions before hand. He was understanding and relates to people. Nice sense of humor. Younger teacher, and enjoys participations and opinions from students. I learned a lot and enjoyed it. Defiantly take it!
The best teacher at DVC. Really easy to understand, loves discussion, tests are very easy if you study. TAKE HIM!
If you are not interested in political science He is a good teacher to get. The "reading" he pretty much gives you everything you need to have for the test as well as the things you need to study for. come to class take even decent notes and you can pass this. one side note is that we did have to write two papers but he is kind, fair grader.
GREAT TEACHER! He relates really well with his students and is always cracking jokes. He made it easy to learn if you arent super interested in poli sci. younger teacher really understanding and nice. he responds really fast to e mails and such. give a great review before test which aren't super hard if you take notes.
this guy is great. i am a business major so politics is really not my thing but he made it really interesting. He takes roll everyday since it counts in your final grade but his tests are really easy. He gives us all the questions in advance. 1 research paper and 3 assignments. i highly recommend this professor. he is also really funny
easy class over all. up to 25 points extra credit available. gives out test exam questions a class day in advance from the exam. can be a bit boring at times but for the most part a fun class.
Good man, fair teacher, well-prepared for classes, knows his subject, and allows all opinions. Leftward bias, but is fair to ALL students. Will give 100% on tests, but not on papers, and no explanation for lost points. He will always help, and gives a full review for fill-in-the-blanks mid-term and final. Conclusion: GREAT TEACHER, GREAT CLASS!
I like the guy alot, really nice and cute too. Class was alot of work but it was a summer class. Take him you'll be pleased you did, I promise!
Pretty loose in his lectures, though he does provide current & pertinent information that may not be inthe book but does appear on the tests. Attendance is not necessary, however it is hard to do well on the test without his lecture info. Mr. Cloward is also running for Congress but he keeps his politics out of the class.
Rather real and likeable, though the tempo of the class is a little slow. Discussions usually rule majority of class, and he does a decent job of guiding them. Some topics discussed are uncomfortable, but hey, at least he's honest, and not too harsh on the eyes.
Really nice guy, you can tell he enjoys teaching. class was very easy he practically gives you the test ?'s we did 4 essays and all very straight forward just your opinions extra credit available too. it was the easiest A ever but i actually still learned and thoroughly enjoyed the class. take him you will not be disappointed
Easy teacher. Some of what he teaches is from the book and some must be written down. He lectures for the most part but he's very clear. He will tell you EVERYTHING on the test so write down everything he recommends studying and write down ALL the notes, especially the charts. If you pay attention and take notes you are bound to pass.
Clear and helpful. He does lectures for most of the time but he's explains everything well and cracks a joke once in a while. Everything, if not nearly everything, is what'll appear on the tests so take notes. The essays aren't too hard but be specific and rational. Great teacher, overall.
I had Cloward for Introduction to Political Science. The class overall was more interesting than I thought it would be. He makes the class very discussion based which keeps things going. I had it at 930 and it was easier to go to than i thought. Also, there is no homework and the assignments come spread out. I definately recommend him!
If you can get into his class, do yourself a HUGE favor, and TAKE HIM! I don't think I can say enough about how amazing his class is! I have learned SO much, he is probably one of the best teachers I have had at DVC, without a doubt. He only has 2 classes I think, he really deserves to have more, but you will not be disappointed, I promise!
Very good professor. May come off as biased and does share his thoughts with the class often, but listens to what you have to say and respects it. Has a good sense of humor, and gives you lots of opportunities to earn points by talking in class. Essays were easy, but thought-provoking. This is a very interesting class and I highly recommend it.
great teacher. makes learning the subject fun when normally would be boring. he manages to keep your attention for the whole class. def recommend taking him
This teacher is amazing!!! He is very engaging with his lectures and he truly cares about his students. He gives 5 2-page position papers that are fairly easy b/c he goes over each topic and easy mid-term and a 25 question final!!! This class is very manageable especially if your taking a heavy load of units !!Take him you will not regret it !!!
I had him for Pol Sci 121, there was about 5 "essays" but his requirements were to be no more than 2 pages and cite everything. His tests (there are only 2) are strictly off the lecture, dont buy the book it was such a waste of money, we never used it.
Professor Cloward has a great way of teaching political science. I took him in the summer. The tests are easy so long as you are in class and there are 5 papers which are not difficult. I took him at 8 am and made it to class because of how fun he made it. Very understanding and hilarious! Favorite class ever!
Great teacher. He tells it to you straight and the only pieces of homework are position papers that only have to be two pages long. He knows how to make lectures interesting and he gives you chances every class to earn extra credit by sharing news about politics. Favorite teacher by far.
Great teacher and easy class. Definitely recommend!
Cloward is incredible! I got an "A" and I didn't even feel like I was trying. His class was NOT stressful! If you ever feel confused, he is more than willing to help. The textbooks are not used at all. It's based on lecture and then a test on solely off his lectures. Attendance is key to passing the midterm and final. NO ESSAY QUESTIONS! yay! :D
I took him for Poli Sci 120 and 121. I use Rate My Professor for every single class I've ever taken in the past 3 years but no teacher has yet inspired me to write a review about them except Professor Cloward. Amazing.
I took him for Poli Sci 120 and 121. I have used Rate My Professor for every single class I've ever taken in the past 4 years but no teacher has yet inspired me to write a review about them except Professor Cloward. Amazing.
He's intertaining and has really interesting and intelligent views on politics. His midterm was brutal and full of numbers, and sometimes the class could be a little redundant, but overall he's a good teacher who truly knows his subject.
The class starts off slow, but then starts to pick up, especially as people start talking. He's funny and a good lecturer. The topics discussed are really interesting and will definitely open your eyes. Five essays, but all two pagers which actually made it harder because the topics were deep.Pretty easy.Participation point per and extra credit.
Overall it was not a bad class, he can be funny and he's very passionate about the subject. It's not really an easy class but not the hardest by all means. I wouldn't mind having him as a teacher again. Also, participation is key in this class
Take this class! 3 midterms and one integrative research paper. Super helpful and by far one of the funniest teachers at Dvc. Has the best college stories ever. Oh and don't buy the textbooks. You won't need them.
Mr. Cloward is the man. nuff said.
pretty chill class he wasn't too worried about people being late (i was late to my final and he didn't give me sh_t for it) not much hw you just need to pay attention and you'll do fine
This guy is awesome - easily one of my favorite classes this semester. The guy knows his stuff and is beyond helpful. Funny and smart... one of the best at DVC, period.
Mr. Cloward makes this subject relatable to every one in class, it's impossible to not be interested in his lectures. Take good notes, he passes out a study guide that tells you exactly what you need to know for the test, all from his lectures. Learned a lot and had a great time in class, great professor and well rounded guy :)
Mr Cloward really knows his stuff. His intro class was informative and he maintains his objectivity. You will learn things beyond names and dates. Highly recommended
Professor Cloward is pretty great. The class starts a little slow but once the topics get heavier everyone really starts participating and it gets more interesting. He did a good job of staying biased, and really tries to relate to his students. There are 3 easy tests and a research paper, but he's really helpful if you have any questions. TAKE IT!
Dr. Cloward is the best! He knows his stuff, which is pretty interesting. He makes sure his students keeps interested on his subject, a subject that many do not find enticing. He gives everyone the chance to get that sexy "A."
Great guy and great instructor. Obviously passionate about what he's teaching, and is a genuine guy who keeps it real. Attend class and pay attention and take good notes during lecture and you should be fine. Provides study guides for exams, and has a research paper at the end of the semester. Getting an A in this class is very manageable.
He is a great teacher, super funny and makes you interested in learning. Class is always entertaining. He is really easy- unless you are dumb or don't come to class. Easy A with little effort, 25 possible extra credit points. Take the class just because he is actually hilarious, and hot in an unexpected way.. woot woot.
This class is not as easy as people say. However, he is very helpful and the study guides tell you what you need to know. Probably only 1 hw assignments total. Grade is based on 3-4 test which sucks because if you do poorly on one, it really messes up your entire grade. Overall, he's very funny and down to earth. And yes he is hot which is a plus!
He's very nice and easy-going. The class is easy, 3 tests and one paper. Provides a study guide before each of the exams. Didn't really like his style of lecturing which was basically talking without any visual aids, or teaching aids most of the time. Overall a good teacher though for an introductory political science class.
3 words. Best. Professor. Ever. Took him for 120 and 121. You will learn a lot in this class and participate in numerous thought-provoking discussions. You should want to come to this class and learn. Enjoy!
Excellent teacher and class, if you enjoy discussing politics and talking in class and sharing your views you'll love this class. Teacher has strong left side views, if you agree you'll get along, if you have opposite views just be strong about them and back them up. 2 tests and no homework, do the study guides and you'll be fine. Definitely take
If you think you might want to study political science he is the man! All aspects of government are clearly outlined and his humor and personal stories really shed light into the world of politics.
This class reminded me a lot of my Government teacher from high school. He teaches the realities of the United States and doesn't beat around the bush. He offers extra credit, there's on essay and a few tests that are no brainers as long as you show up. Its an awesome class. Dont show up late! He will glare a little and deducts participation!
Great professor. Outspoken socialist (ran for Congress 3x), but respects views other than his own (when you have evidence to back them). 3 easy exams, 1 research paper & extra credit opportunities. Don't waste your money on the textbooks! Seriously everything on the exams is from lectures! I'm more right wing & would take his class again.
Dr. Cloward is hilarious. Although I wasn't too inspired during the class because I was only taking it as extra units, he made it fun. He's a HUGE jokester, and anyone with a good socialist sense of humor will be very pleased with him. He's a great lecturer because you want to listen.
He is great professor. However, his lecture is not organized. He does not use book, only use the blackboard to take notes. I thought this lecture would be really easy, but it was not. I am an international student, and it was kind of hard to prepare for the three big exams which is based on his lecture. There is research paper too. It was stressful
He is very good. He is very clear. And most important thing is that he is helping to students.
Jeremy is a very awesome teacher. He gives extra credit, and never have HW, there are just 3 tests and 1 research paper.
He is a great professor!!! His lecture is clear and fun!!! He gives us extra credits, so you won't get lower than C if you attend the class and study for exam. There were 3 exams (multiple choices) and 1 research paper (8-10 pages).
I like this professor and really enjoyed class. He respect students opinions.
I took his class last summer. He's a great Professor, he listens to the students and respects student's opinion. His extra credit or "In the News" session were really fun. Easy exam as long as you listen to his lecture.
He is an extremely intelligent professor that inspired me to look into a completely different career option. His discussions really get your mind working and he knows what he is talking about and is very passionate about teaching. He makes you really hungry for knowledge and makes learning about the U.S and politics fun. He is nice to look at! -C
Had him in Fall 2014 at Las Positas. I'm a Poli Sci major and I found him to be a very inspirational professor and very genuine. He made it a point every class to talk about major current events, and if the class was very interested in these topics he would let the discussion continue. I hope he teaches for a long time. He made learning very easy.
You have to buy textbook in order to get a good grade! Participate, do the research paper, about 3 exams which is all multiple choice.
Amazing professor
I read most of the comments on here and for the most part they are spot on. He gave 3 test during the semester, got 2 b's and 1 a on the test! 1 research paper due at the end of semester. I would write more good things about this man, but I only have so much room to write!
Dr. Cloward was one of the best teachers i've ever had. He actually wants everyone to benefit from the class, wasn't a hard grader. Tests were pretty easy, just take some notes and pay attention to the lectures in class and you'll do great.
I had him in Spring 2016 at LPC,bought the books but didn't even use them because everything you need to know for the tests are in his lectures(take good notes)! Doesn't assign hw and there is only one research paper which you have the entire semester to do! He is very knowledgable and I would definitely recommend taking him!
While political science can be a little dry, Professor Cloward makes it interesting. I always left his class thinking about politics. He really cares about his students. He wants you to pass and will gladly help you if you need it. One of the best professors ever. I recommend him to anyone who's a polisci major... Or not. He's just that awesome.
Professor Cloward makes this class really interesting. He's funny, offers a lot of extra credit, and does not make the class boring. He cares about his students, and want them to do well in the tests. All his questions are from his lectures. remember to take notes. The workload is fairly low. There are a 10 pages research paper at the end.
Good class. I never had to work that hard at all in it. The research paper is your choice of topic so it is actually interesting. The tests are simple if you just listen to lectures and take decent notes.
Definitely the best professor I've had at DVC. His class is straight to the point, his lectures are very interesting and relatable and Dr. Cloward is just an all around great guy.
BEST PROFESSOR I'VE EVER HAD
Dr. Cloward is by far THE BEST political science professor at DVC!!!! This guy cares about his students and wants them to succeed in the class. He is very knowledgeable of the material and knows what he's talking about. 3 exams, 1 research paper, 1 personal statement, and extra credit. Def would take him again.
Three exams and a research paper is all he bases your grade on. But his lectures are very informative and lay out exactly what will be on the test. If you take good, detailed notes, the tests will be super easy. This guy knows his politics, and is interested in what students have to say as well. Great class, great environment, great semester.
Dr. Cloward is such a good professor. His lectures are engaging and thought-provoking and you can tell that he really cares about politics. If you go to class the tests aren't that bad at all.
Professor Cloward is the best professor ever. He is very passionate about politics, and that passion is infectious. I would without a doubt take another one of his courses. With good ears and good notes, there's no reason why someone wouldn't pass!
Dr. Cloward is one of the best professors by far! He adds great commentary during the "In the News" portion of the class (which is extra credit). Three exams, one research paper, and one personal statement. If you are already passionate about politics like he is, it's an easy A.
Greatest professor I have ever had. Period. He wants students to learn, not memorize, and therefore his tests are not difficult and he focuses mainly on the daily lectures. Hilarious, all around great guy. Don't take any other POLYSCI teacher if you have the opportunity to take his course. You won't regret it.
Amazing professor! He knows what he is talking about and makes the lectures interesting. He is also a great person and will clarify and answer as many questions as you have. I only had the chance to have him for a month, and if I had a chance to take him again I would!
I enjoyed his class very much. His tests are not difficult, but you need to pay attention to his lectures and study a little to pass. This is a discussion based class and if you are somebody who much rather sit back and listen then you have nothing to worry about because he won't put you on the spot. My class did have many people who would speak .
Great instructor, he sympathizes with his students on a personal level. His exams are very easy if you pay attention to our group discussion. Cloward's goal is not to fail you but to teach you real world issues and keep you informed. I have been lucky enough to have him for 3 semesters in different classes.
Professor Cloward cares about his students and his class is very engaging. Professor Cloward will work with you to put you in the position to best succeed. His class is lecture heavy but it isnt boring if you participate. He respects all political views and his is very supportive of his students.
This guy, is a real professor. Everyone in the class is respected and drawn into the conversation. Dr Cloward is a deep thinker that get you thinking deep.
Professor Cloward is the best professor in DVC. He really covers the material well and wants his students to improve. He engages with the students, and respects the students opinions. I am an international student and know nothing about US laws. But Professor Cloward makes it seem so easy and entertaining. His tests are relatively easy.
Easiest class to take! No homework, just a research paper due at the last day of class. I was never in class and passed. Quizzes are common sense, not hard at all. Hes so funny and interesting, first classes seem boring but trust me its the best class to take! Extra credit if you tell the class current events for 5 days. Take him, you wont regret
Cloward is a pretty chill person as long as you participate in class. They are 3 tests all semester with a 10 page research paper due on the final date. He is a pretty easy grader and provides a study guide for all tests which is detailed. He can be difficult to reach outside of school, as he does not check his email frequently.
Nice class and nice teacher. A lots of discutions with the class, which makes the class interesting and we learn a lot without too much work. Really nice teacher as well.
Professor Cloward is the best professor I have ever come across. You can tell that he loves his profession and is truly passionate about politics. 3 exams, all MC; all based on lectures. Offers extra credit and requires a 10-page research paper due at the end of the sem. which can be on any topic relevant to politics. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!
He always speaks so low and small, which is confusing. His book lacks his own sharp opinion and analysis. What he said in the class is just old stuff. He is little bit arrogant and seems lacking interest in students' response. Not Hard to get an A if you participate.
Just 3 tests, 1 large paper. Alot of extra credit
10 page research paper due at end of semester. 3 tests- he gives study guides but they do not have all subjects that are on the tests so it was hard to ace. Lectures a lot and goes off topic. Lots of material was not covered. Learned a lot about laws and constitution. Overall, okay.
Cloward does an amazing job talking about current events and offers extra credit every day. Gives 3 study guides for all 3 tests and has one final research paper due at the end. Good teacher, very accessible, and easy to pass if you come to class and take good notes. Most of the tests are straight from the notes and his book. Loved him!
I don't feel I learned a lot and... You have to buy his own expensive book but... don't, because tests are easy if you listen in class, Make fun of a few students in a bad way to make the class entertaining but... don't succeed at all.
Cloward's ability to critically examine the present within the context of history is nearly unparalleled. He's brutally honest and is always looking for to bring out the best in his students.
The coolest professor I have ever had.
He gave extra credit opportunities at the beginning of every class and a study guide for each exam with all test materials covered. I wouldn't bother buying the textbook: it's not used. One of the best teachers I've ever had. He's very engaged with his students. Inspired me to pursue grad school.
Great class. 3 easy tests and 1 paper. lectures are always fun and informations. 100% would recommend.
If you're looking for a class to be able to share your opinion in a safe space, I suggest looking elsewhere. If your opinion differs from Mr. Cloward's he will do his best to make sure you feel stupid. Very condescending and passive agressive. Three exams and one research paper, class average was 75% on the paper.
Professor constantly complains about students not showing up to his OPTIONAL zoom class. All students signed up for the class with the knowledge that it was a non-synchronous class, and had no idea there would be a 3 hour long zoom at a specified time every week. Many of us have significantly more important classes and this is an intro class.
This professor is AWFUL. Do NOT let these previous reviews fool you. There is absolutely no structure to this class, no homework, just exams &a 10 pg paper. He was upset no one showed up to OPTIONAL lectures and gave an "especially difficult" first exam to punish us. He also deletes the course page during exams. Strongly suggest you don't take him
Class does lack structure, with the only assignments being 3 exams + a 10 page paper. The exams are actually pretty easy if you watch the "optional" lecture, where he tells you exactly what you need to know. He also posts detailed study guides and lets you share current events in class for up to 25 extra credit points.
I really liked Prof Cloward, but the class was super unstructured. He goes off-topic a LOT during lectures so class was poorly paced. The exams were super easy if you attended class, probably impossible if you didn't. Everything on the exams was ripped directly from lecture talking points, so buying the books isn't that necessary, his book is $$$!
One of the biggest issues was the lack of communication/emails on most things from Cloward. However, since it's a summer class, perhaps there's a bit of leeway. Entire course grade relies on four assignments: 3 incredibly complex/specific questioned exams & 10 page research paper. Not many chances to raise your grade, which was a bit annoying.
Great professor. Loved every lecture.
I dont understand the stigma and hate around This professor, he's very laid back, and exams aren't difficult if you read and take notes. Anyway, he truly cares about his students! ( he lacks student and office hours so emailing him will be difficult, but he's very understanding)
I enjoyed being in Professor Cloward's class! There aren't many assignments in the class, so there isn't much structure. He gave clear instructions for all assignments, except for the Research Paper, in which it wasn't clear which kind of MLA format to utilize. Gives constructive feedback and offers some extra credit.
Prof Clowards class has been one of my favorite classes I have taken at DVC. His assignments are clear and appropriate time is given for completion. He is also super understanding if you communicate with him, he is a fast responder and you can tell he loves what he does. I have never written a review for a professor before, but he deserves it.
Professor Cloward is a kind instructor. He's very laid back and assigns few assignments and exams. As he is not particularly focused on technology, many of his lectures feel more like class discussions. The coursework is manageable for students who pay attention and actively participate. Overall, I found this course to be enjoyable and engaging.
Engaging lectures, relevant current events, and helpful study guides. Attendance is mandatory but easy to pass with good notes. Unstuck study a great resource alongside the textbook.
Super easy to pass- barely listen in class and all the T/F questions on the exams are true. If you actually want to learn anything, do not take this class. Super political and hardly teaches at all. His "writing" on the board is just the first letter of a word he goes on a 10 min rant about. Again, super easy to pass but you will not learn anything
Blatantly political. This slant is seen in his lectures AND his textbook. Speaking of, his lectures are mostly just him (and participating students) engaging in obnoxious liberal rants. In spite of being an in-person class, the exams were online, so I guess that was nice. Anyway, very easy class.
Chill professor, he does insert himself often into discussion and can be annoying. Is educated on the topics but once you get into depth he can be vague. He lectures incredibly slowly and attendance is mandatory (paper attendance) so sometimes it can be rough to stay focused. Exams online and super easy. Easy A. he is a reformist socialist guy.
Overall an OK professor. The class itself isn't too hard for a summer online class, just a lot of papers and a decent amount of reading. In total, there are 3 exams, discussions, and one big final paper (8-10 pages). I would recommend not procrastinating since the assignments and especially the final research paper take time.
Super chill class I would recommend getting the textbook as a lot of the work is based off of the reading from the book. He's super chill and makes the class go by quick also very understanding the class is very easy to pass
The professor is very understanding and approachable. A few assignments just three exams and a few writing assignments so the class is overall really easy. He does lecture a lot, which can make classes feel long at times, but his humor and knowledge on the topics always draws you back in. Overall, a great professor and a positive experience.
