This is such an amazing class. The books he assigns are incredible and I alway go back to them for reference. YOU HAVE TO DO THE READING!!! because you will get quizzed on it!! The work in this class is difficult but he really helps you along the way. YOU WILL BECOME A BETTER WRITTER!!!!Take this class if you like David Foster Wallace.
He is incredibly focused on improving your ability to write at a professional level. All of the classes assignments( except quizzes, which are easy) are meticulously graded, and feedback is given on how to improve rhetoric and grammar. He will markup your papers with suggestions even if you are good at English; however, he is generous with grades.
Hands down the best professor I've had at NOVA. Very professional, friendly, accessible, and willing to discuss anything. Be ready to read thoroughly and think hard about what you're writing and how you're writing it. Professor Cook makes sure that his homework and grading aren't just arbitrary and will actually help you improve your skills.
He's a very good professor that is willing to help out to improve your writing skills better by the end of the semester. His grading is alright, but tons of work to do so you would needs to earn the grade. Also he's a hottie which is a plus
Great professor- went to Georgetown so he is very well educated. He did wonders for my writing.
Amazing professor! Super approachable, will always work with you outside of class. He's sort of a tough grader-- but fair and gives good feedback. You'll get quizzed on the readings, so don't skip them.
The. Best. Professor. At. Nova. He improved my analytical thinking so much. He is the nicest man you will ever meet, and has thorough knowledge of English. You will have 3 essays and 1 exam. The exam is easy, just make sure to read all the assignments! He gives great feedback on your essays. He's an amazing person, and I wish I could take him again
You have to plan ahead with the assigned readings and additional work. You have to do 5 journals, write three essays (two short essays, one research paper), be prepared for reading quizzes, and lastly, participation. Do not wait at the last minute. Professor Cook is very caring, patient, understandable, and wants you to be successful. Good luck!
You will come out a better reader/writer by taking his class. Class is definitely worth it in the long run. The class is obviously catered towards a large group of students, but you'll feel like the class has been tailored directly towards your personal growth and development. Do the work and participate and you'll get a B or higher.
Prof Cook is great! I was never a big fan of English, or literature; but he made me love his class! the way he teaches and goes deep in detail is amazing. TAKE HIM !!!!!
One thing that I really miss about this professor is that he really puts time into giving you quality feedback; he spends time reviewing your work sentence by sentence and not just for grammar but how you're connecting sentences and whether or not you need to elaborate points yor making.
Jeremy is a great teacher. He teaches the class well and invites others thoughts on the readings. Be prepped to read A LOT and if you dont, you wont do well. On that note, ENG 246 is an advanced class. Class time is pretty much a book club which has its benefits & Drawbacks. If you can read 2 books every 2 weeks this class is for you.
Prof. Cook has quick email response times and is really accessible through his office hours. His lectures were well prepared and made the toughest of readings easily understood. Take class notes, plan for assigned readings, and participate in class discussions to succeed. If extra help is needed, ask him! He's approachable and friendly.
Professor Cook is everything you want in an English professor. He teaches you how to think critically. If you participate and do the readings youll enjoy this class! None of the readings were dreadful, so do them because youll be quizzed.
Great presenter. Everything flowed incredibly smoothly, and I felt he was well prepared for every class. Sometimes interrupts you after you've made your point he was looking for. Great at helping the learning process. One of the best graders I've ever seen- doesn't hold back on marking up your paper, but knows what to takes points off for.
He's a good teacher. There are quizzes before every class so make sure you do the reading. If you don't read you won't pass. Not an "easy A" by any means. Studying for the final exam is pretty difficult especially if you don't know all the stories. Do NOT skip class because he is very serious about attendance! Overall, good class.
Professor Cook is truly the best professor that I've ever had. He's one of the reasons that I became an English major. I can't think of a professor more passionate for their field or more genuinely excited to nurture their students' growth. Jeremy instills a real appreciation for literature and helps students achieve critical thinking skills.
Professor Cook is one of the best teachers I have taken at NOVA. The reading is what you would expect for a Literature class and it helps that he picks interesting reads. The whole class is analyzing the assigned readings as small groups. You won't pass the class if you don't read what he assigns. I would take him again if I had the chance.
He's a good choice, I didn't necessarily enjoy the lectures because I'm not an English person, but as long as you do the readings, participate in class, and do the papers you should be fine. He gives you everything you need for the Final Exam, you just have to be able to pay attention.
It's been a couple years since I've taken Cook's class at NVCC, and I'm at a 4 year institution now, but he is still the BEST professor I've ever had. I learned so much in his class and he gives great feedback, it's evident that he really wants to help you and make sure you succeed.
Honestly the best professor I've had in my college career! Do the readings and show up to class and the final exam will be a breeze for you! 3 long papers but you can submit drafts to him for feedback as well as do revisions on the 1st two. You will enjoy his lectures and he'll really blow your mind about literature! Can't recommend him enough!!!
This class is easy as long as you read the assignments each week and show up to class. There are 3 essays and 1 final exam. I took this class to substitute for ENG 112 and I'm so happy I did. I actually felt like I learned something and I came out a better writer. Professor Cook is extremely nice and thorough in his instructions for assignments.
I honestly can't say enough good things about Prof. Cook! I'm not even much of a literature/English person, only took this class for the elective. But I was blown away by how he managed to make me care even a little about the subject. His lectures were a highlight of my week! He also gives amazing feedback on assignments. Highly, highly recommend!!
Prof. Cook clearly knows what he's teaching about and makes a clear effort to make a class about reading and writing essays as exciting as possible. Best English teacher I've ever had. Do the work and the reading and you'll get a good grade. It's not a hard class.
Youll have about 3-4 readings each week and youll be quizzed on them (5 questions and one extra credit). Look for the simple details in the readings bc thats what he'll quiz you on. Then you have journals to turn in about your assigned reading theyre worth 50 points and his feedback on these suck. then theres a reflective paper and a final all hard
Professor Cook was awful. He constantly picked on me during the class and sent me rude emails due to being absent from part of a class. Highly would not recommend. He is a difficult grader and did not make it easy to get an A+ in his class. I finished the semester with a B+.
reading out of class- 2 hours a week. papers- 1 almost every week either a short exercise(300 w) or a essay(1000 w). grading- Chill- focus more on content and your point rather than grammar. (all our work is easy if you just try there's just a fair amount of it so don't fall behind) He's superb at explaining things- everything he does is to help
Prof. Cook is an engaged teacher with very constructive feedback in our writing. He allows to submit drafts of the writing to get his feedback and make sure you get that golden A. Class has a consistent workload so organizing your weekly tasks will make this class fly. His feedback was really good to improve my writing. Highly recommend!
Hated the reading quizzes and the book that was used but professor Cook was amazing!!! 10/10 recommended.
LOVE this prof. He was so helpful in my first semester, I genuinely enjoyed the class. Definitely don't overlook the grading quizzes as they may make/break your grade. He gives opportunities for rewrites on essays and gives great feedback. Amazing teacher.
He is great at making you learn the material, however, that is where my praises stop. He makes you read way too much and treats "The Sense of Style" like it is the Bible. His feedback makes you feel insulted and his grading policy can be summed up as follows: "Your paper was the worst I've ever read, here's an 80." Do not take him for this class.
He is overall a good professor. He is a stern grader with essays, he lets you redo them for a better grade though. Theres reading quizzes every week which is annoying because one wrong is an 80, and he wont let you do corrections. The class is just writing essays, reading essays and taking quizzes on them, and also weekly assignments
I can't recommend this teacher enough. Lectures, assignments, and feedback was very clearly communicated. Three essays spread evenly throughout the semester, none too hard. A little bit of weekly reading and an easy quiz. Not too hard if you do the work and pay attention, which he makes easy to do.
He is a great teacher and I would definitely take him to improve your writing. If you are in it for just an easy A and do not want to work for it then hes not your guy. The workload isnt too bad and he is very clear about what he wants out of each assignment so its easy to get a good grade if you actually read his rubric
Specific questions on weekly timed quizzes. Midterm/Final is easy if you've been reading the stories. Very clear rubric and feedback. Don't mess up on the quizzes, it a good chunk of your grade. Just read and understand the concepts, study hard and you'll pass with an A. Papers are doable is you've been reading. He's really nice and helpful too.
I was dreading ENG 112. Professor Cook made it really easy to maneuver through the course. The required books have very enjoyable reading material. All classes start with quizzes, which are very easy if you read the stories and essays. Every essays written for tests will set you up for the final exam. Start strong and you will have an easy A.
Professor Cook is by far my favorite online professor. He is incredible at being involved in the class and gives the best feedback. I took ENG 112 with him and decided to take ENG 236 solely because he was teaching it. Yes, there's a decent amount of reading, but it was manageable. Plus, there were multiple options for all of the module projects.
Read good recent reviewsv accurate. Solid butnot hard class!Have to put in the effort and so YOU WILL IMPROVE greatly. If you attend all classes, work on what's taught, your A awaits you. Quizzes end before the class and they are based on mostly purpose or main/ evident details. Camera is required tho. He is very accommodating. Goldenoffice hours!
I took professor Cook for an accelerated 7 week course and he was great. Everything was fast paced but he organized every module so well that it made it so much easier to succeed. He's kind of tough grader especially for discussion board posts, so make sure you cover every point and make it detailed. Overall, amazing and very helpful professor.
In simple words, if you wanna spend your semester stressing out over a class then he's your go to but otherwise avoid him because you'll find much simpler professors. He is such a HARSH GRADER for no reason and the amount of workload for a 3 credit English class is absolutely insane. I would switch class but I need it to transfer. Don't take him!
He gives good feedback, but his grading and feedback expect us to think as he would analyze and make connections. However, the class is not that difficult if you already know basic literature concepts. DO read the readings and know them for the quizzes.
Prof Cook's lectures were amazing, but the class's exhausting. There were so many hw and papers, even when it's a 15-week class. If you're really good at English and want to learn more, then he's a good fit; or else, don't take him!
Professor Cook is well-versed in his field and offers insights that other English teachers fail to. He cares for each and every student, providing thoughtful feedback and responsive answers. The course consisted of three essays (1500 words average) with readings in between. The workload is certainly not light but there's value in every assignment.
Prof. Cook organizes the class so well that it's hard to fail. His communication skills and accessibility are also top-notch. He's a quick grader so you will always know where you stand. His feedback on assignments is golden, which helps you improve graded essays that he lets you revise for full points. Overall, he's an absolute goat of a professor
Prof. Cook is the best English teacher. Course topics go with 2-3 weekly readings, discussions & quizzes that build up to the essays well. He's great at giving feedback to do better & think more. You get plenty of time to do everything & he's open for after-class chats and office hours & he'll work with you for extensions on personal issues.
Best teacher NOVA at Loudoun has to offer; genuinely caring, probably one of the best professors at the college; knows his material, easy to engage with; classes weren't that difficult, it's what was expected of a college course; fair grading; lots of feedback and helpful insights into essays; definitely would recommend to any student; fair grader
Professor Cook was not only one of the best professors I have taken at NOVA, but also one of the best teachers I have ever had. He truly cares about helping you learn and grow as a writer. He allows revisions on essays which really helps especially with his feedback, which is incredibly insightful and useful. Highly recommend this class!! :)
One of the best professors I have ever had. Through this course I found a new appreciation for writing. While there was a lot of reading homework, it is consistent and easy to plan for.
Super friendly, took him last semester. He still says hi to me if I see him on campus. Classroom information on canvas is clear and super organized. Expectations are super clear, and he is willing to explain more in detail to those confused. Sometimes lectures got a little off topic but I still learned how to write new types of essays.
GREAT professor! I learned a TON from his analysis on short stories, after thinking that I understood them well enough. He challenges you to think in ways that need to be practiced. I also found him to be a VERY fair grader. On multiple essays, he had feedback but mentioned other elements that overcame anything negative and still gave full points.
