His lectures are awkward, and he is always picking on students. Beware of sitting in the front. He spends more time trying to be an awkward SNL character than a nice prof. He is also super rude.
Very rude. You learn very little. He doesn't explain most things well. Instead of learning why statistics work, you plug numbers into the equations from your notes that he lets you use on everything. Assumes everyone is lazy. I missed one lecture and went to office hours, and he shamed me about how I would've known the material if I went to lecture
Jeremy is one of the rudest, least professional professors I have ever had. Not only is his teaching style odd, distracting and unprofessional, he seems to hate students who bring up anything to do with grades. His tests are also extremely irrelevant to actually using statistics - they are more like decoding double negative T/F questions
Very engaging teaching style. Gave extra credit and wanted students to succeed.
Lecture feels more like bad stand up than actual class. Not extremely enjoyable and the prof uses strange analogies instead of actually explaining why things work the way they do. Clicker quizzes aren't hard. There is no curve but the grading is somewhat generous.
Jeremy, oh Jeremy, what a man. While he was a really quirky teacher, and some people didn't like that, he truly knew his stuff when it came to statistics. The class was relatively easy and enjoyable, with little homework, but his tests weren't a good reflection of that we were learning. Notes were helpful, and was always responsive, ready to help!
The class content was not difficult, however, grading was biased and arbitrary. His exam q's felt like they were testing your understanding of his psyche rather than the material. His behavior in lecture was also immature. He constantly made people uncomfortable by calling students out and mocking them, even for things like going to the bathroom.
Jeremy is, well, goofy. He has this interesting wit that I truly thought was funny. However, his tests were literally out of left field; they were much harder than class material. His explanation of R is a joke. Does give extra credit. ILR stats way less work and easier, take that instead if you can.
The class is not difficult if you go to lecture and lab. Stats isn't really my thing so I didn't find the material very engaging, but if you keep up with the workload you will get a good grade. The professor gives extra credit if the prelim medians aren't where he wants them to be, and you can tell he wants students to succeed in this class.
Jeremy, why are your tests like this? The wording makes the test more about solving a lexicon puzzle instead of the actual content.
very entitled and arrogant person. strange because of how incompetent he is.
Don't get close to statistic here or you will be miserable
He is the type of guy who does not round up 89.5 to 90 in the final grade. His exam is also weirdly worded. It was very confusing when you cannot understand what he is trying to test in his exam. Trust me: AVOID him anyway.
Haha 89.68, what do you want? No curve, no extra credit, you know how much time I have spent on the course? Every weekend, I slept at 3 to finish the lab. Ended up with a B+ but I got A+ on my last stats class.
This class is not too conceptually challenging, but it does take up a lot of time. First of all, don't even think about skipping lecture, since everything covered will come up later. Aside from that, the weekly labs have a lot of questions, and are also ambiguously worded to the point that many people need clarification in office hours.
Stats and R both aren't my thing but Jeremy made them both pretty easy to understand as a non-math person. All content is covered in lecture, and he makes it easy to take good notes. The class overall is pretty light, not a ton of work.
Lecture and lecture quizzes pretty much irrelevant to exam.
Lectures are useless and irrelevant to exams.
This class was not that hard if you have stats experience and the labs on R were very helpful. The only issues with this prof are that some of the questions on his tests are unclear and he is sometimes mean to students in lecture. He does give extra credit and is generally responsive. This class is easy enough that you can get by just with your TA.
The class was super easy, even with no stats or R background. Lectures got pretty boring and some of the exam questions were a little mysterious, but labs, homework, and quizzes were essentially a guaranteed 100 as long as you put in a tiny bit of effort.
Just cannot understand him for some reason. I have taken stats class with another prof and found it interesting; however, he pushed me away from learning more stats.
Stats prelims are worded oddly. He makes basic concepts (ie graphs/ p value) more difficult by poorly explaining them. You might be better off in Bio stats.
Entner is one of the more down to earth and funny professors I have had. Always cracks jokes and really tries not to overcomplicate lectures and exams. One wrinkle is that the discussion sections mainly use software not available on the exams, leading to exams that students have not been adequately prepared for. Overall kind and willing to help.
Lectures were extremely dry to the point that they made me hate the content that was being covered and really made me not want to become a stats major. There is no extra credit which is terrible because the class isn't curved and the median is low. The workload is fine but there are no practice prelims or a textbook to get help from.
Professor Entner does his best to make the lectures fun and enjoyable. Despite it being a 4-credit course, the work was lighter than any other course that I've taken. Lectures weren't mandatory, and he recorded videos for the people who didn't want to show up to the lectures. Definitely take Professor Entner's class for intro stats!
Sometimes students can be a little hyperbolic when they say "oh my god, this professor is the worst." Jeremy Entner lives up to the hype. He is easily the worst teacher I have ever had. Like, in my entire academic history from preschool to college. I would choose my daycare teacher from when I was 3 over Jeremy Enter to teach me statistics. Awful.
I took STSCI 2100 this semmester and I absolutely hated it. I had taken a previous into to stats college class that I got a 100 average in and while the homework and discussions were easy. He doesn't word the test well. He is never responsive to emails and the ta I had didn't know anything.
I took his 3010 and 3020. lectures are kind of dry and there are so many trivial details of stat models / R code that you must pay attention to later in 3020. He uploads all lecture videos to Canvas, but his lectures are generally better (at least 60% students never go to lectures). His OH is helpful and he answers individual questions pretty well.
Definitely the least engaging professor I've every had, which explains why 80% of the class didn't attend his lectures. He never replies to emails and his lectures were pretty painful to sit through. I appreciated his leniency with weekly quizzes, but he worded tests so badly that many students without a stats background were destined to fail.
Tests are fair if you just listen to the lectures, and he uploads everything online. Multiple attempts allowed for quizzes to get a good grade.
Best, easiest college class ever. The material was basic, the tests were exactly like the questions done in discussion section, and the grading scheme emphasized homework, quizzes, and discussions as much as exams. It's totally possible to skip class and still get an A (unfortunately doesn't give A+). He's a quirky guy but I found it entertaining.
skipped the lecture because they were long and boring and didn't want to hear his lame joke. lecture vids posted were lifesavers
His lectures were kind of useless, but I found him to be quite funny. He always wears this backwards camera wherever he goes. I did everything in my dorm (read through the Google slides myself), never went to class etc and still got an A.
He's ok.
Ok so most people dislike him but he's really not that bad. Tests are open note for 3010 and only count for 50% of your grade. Now his test questions are a bit weird but if you pay any amount of attention to the lectures you can figure out how to do them with the notes. This is the major complaint most people have.
open note tests. that says it all.
He seems like a nice guy, but he is a TERRIBLE teacher. The discussions are led by other students who don't know what is going on. All the tests are on things barely mentioned in class. He literally is useless, there is no way to contact him, no guide to what is on the exams, and literally no access to any forms of help or practice for this class.
3010 was an unpleasant experience. Jeremy is not an engaging lecturer, and most people did not attend them. There is no textbook, and the class relies on a notes document Jeremy provides. The tests could be annoying and tricky but were open note, which I appreciated. Late assignments are not accepted and Jeremy would be condescending about it.
This guy is the worst. Actually the worst class Ive ever taken at cornell. He teaches NOTHING, seems like he knows nothing either. His tests have the WORST formats, and everything he does is so extra and not helpful. Never replied to ANY emails that are sent to him over the semester. All around USELESS. 0/10.
Don't make the same mistake I made.
Good lecturer and a funny guy. Made a very foreign concept interesting/enjoyable through his unconventional sense of humor (he can be out of pocket). Tests are not very hard (cheat sheet allowed). Only work was textbook readings, weekly quizzes (unlimited attempts), and section activities (time limit). Overall, great experience and a good class!
Professor Entner was pretty good in lectures but material was simply enough to be learned outside of class as well. Tests were pretty reasonable as you are allowed a cheat-sheet and other assignments helped boost overall grade. Would highly recommend class, especially for non-stem majors as material is not too complicated.
Not the "easy A" class everyone says it is. Concepts are explained poorly/confusingly. Can use a cheat sheet on exams, but only basic calculators allowed despite stat software used in section. Easy to get full section/quiz points, making up 50% of grade. But to do well on other 50% (exams), expect to teach yourself. I barely made the A threshold.
He is ok. His tests will have things you could never have expected or planned to study for. He will not round your grade at all.
Nice guy but you need to watch the videos in addition to lecture. Course material is extremely bland, but Entner tries his best and any other professor would get 1/5 reviews. Biggest complaint is zero curve at all.
My second semester with Entner and he's sure one of a kind. It's hard to do poorly and isn't too much work and you learn an ok amount, particularly using R and regression, but it's always typos or questions on labs or exams that are very ambiguous. The open notes tests and recorded lectures are what make Entner and the course bearable.
Very bad at teaching, give ambiguous exam questions and instructions, is mostly condescending, never reply emails, and seems annoyed when students ask him questions (sometimes judgemental). if not like teaching why become an instructor??? just avoid him
Entner's teaching style sucks. The videos he posts are way better. Lab and exam questions are not clear and sometimes make no sense. No curve at all, I literally had an 89.99% and still didn't get an A-. Learning R is fun if you have a good TA and you can take the lecture quizzes as many times as you need to get a 100% before they close.
Honestly, the class itself wasn't hard but the lectures are unbearable. He tries to be funny and engage with the class but it honestly isn't that great. I didn't feel like I learned a lot in the lectures but more so in the discussions which attendance is mandatory. but whether the discussion is good or not really depends on your TA so goodluck.
Pretty poor teacher. His lectures are a real snore and you often end up just having to self-study in the end. Prelims vary a lot in difficulty. Without AP Stats already under my belt, there is no way I would have gotten the grade I did.
I suggest taking the class because it is Easy to do well but the teacher is such an a-h0le so don't expect to like him. Rude emails and no leniency. 50% of the class should be an automatic 100% though because of the weekly assignments.
The R class was great with him, super boring, but doable workload. He dropped our prelims, and 85% of grading came from problem sets and labs that you can work with others on. He gets distracted easily and does not accept late work for any reason. If you need to ask questions because you were talking he'll harass you instead of answering.
Jeremy Entner will make it his personal mission to ensure you do not understand statistics. Genuinely one of the most confusing professors I have ever had, and the TAs were sophomores and juniors who had no idea what was going on in the course. Avoid at all costs.
Most of reviews are overly critical. That said, he is an odd ball and not a great lecturer. Simple concepts can be confusing. Rude emails. Dumb grading system. Rules won't bend. Late by just 1 second = 0, no excuses. If you just do work on time you should be fine. I recommend taking a different stats such as 2150.
avoid him at all costs, especially if stats is not your major. labs and exams are COMPLETELY unrelated to the lecture content and graded at an unreasonable standard. the class is very unforgiving and will suck the soul out of you.
Lectures are extremely boring and he is disrespectful and insufferable to be around. Makes distasteful jokes commenting on people's ethnicities and appearances. Does weird crowd control during lecture by calling people out which makes everyone uncomfortable. Doesn't respond to emails, no rounding, prelims unrelated to notes, makes stats too hard
I don't really get why he's a professor it never felt like he liked teaching. His lectures were so boring and honestly made me more confused about lots of subjects than before (just watch YouTube videos). He was not just rude to the students but I also noticed him being rude to his TAs. The exams were just kind of weird logic puzzles.
Yeah he's a bit weird but if you do the work, take good notes, and have friends in the class to work on the labs with, easy A.
He is a terrible lecturer, his tests are written extremely poorly to the point of being nearly undecipherable, and he has an army of undergrad TAs who are not good section leaders. My TA told me to use ChatGPT to figure out the problem I was working on because they could not figure it out. Avoid him at all costs, he will just confuse you more.
Do not take if you struggle with math he is so confusing, does not explain concepts well and is overall a rude person.
Actually the worst. So horrendous at teaching i'm not sure how he even got the job and I'm convinced he wants his students to do bad in the class. I would've never taken this class if I knew how bad he was. Made us code in statistics for some reason which makes no sense either. Never obtained a single piece of information from lecture.
The lectures in the first month of class were fine, but once the content became more complex, it became evident there was no reason to attend lectures. This is one of those 'teach yourself' kind of classes, so I used online sources to teach me the content since the lectures did nothing. Generous grade weight distributions so easy to pass.
Very, very bad lecturer. Lectures are confusing and convoluted...he is also completely unreachable and you will have to go to your TAs with questions. Couldn't handle listening to him, so I stopped going to lecture halfway through the semester.
Avoid him at all costs! During class he often waists time by telling insensitive and inappropriate jokes. He tends to skip over important material and ends up putting it on the test. He reads over his notes and the little work that he does is not applicable to anything. He does not post practice material for exams causing mass confusion.
This guy was actually the worst. His exams made no sense, his discussions were useless and annoying, and his lectures. His lectures were such a bore and he thought he was so funny making what he thought were clever jokes but they weren't. He got mad when he saw people leaving the lecture hall but tbh I don't blame them.
As a person he can be a little rude. He's not super responsive or accessible. Aside from that, lectures are fine, prelims are open note MC, homeworks are not too hard to do well on. The class can be annoying- he makes a lot of random errors that can make things confusing, but it's fine overall and he doesn't make it too hard to do well.
He was not a good lecturer in any regard it was very much a self taught class. He is not an understanding person at all.
honestly if you just go to class and have notes on top of his you will be fine, exams are open note and you can figure it out even if you didnt go to class (make sure you know where everything is) hes pretty chill in office hours, sometimes makes stupid jokes but not out of harm. lectures get boring but hes nice as long as youre respectful in class
I wouldn't worry about the exams, but the lectures are boring and unhelpful. You're better off finding youtube videos and teaching yourself the content. Also, you will not get an A+ in this class because the syllabus says that you need higher than a 99.8% to achieve that and he's very particular about the details.
Professor Entner is blunt and unkind. He often targets individuals in class, and while trying to be funny, it is an uncomfortable environment. He is not understanding or empathetic. There was an exam timing issue that affected many students. I emailed him, and he sent a rude response, making me feel disrespected. Easy class, bad professor.
This man is insufferable. I'm serious. Easy A course but I didn't even go to lectures because he's so irritating and inappropriate. Do not even try to email him because he will respond to you in a very rude and dismissive manner, usually with just one line which is rage-inducing. Worst professor I've ever had and I'm a senior.
Unfunny. The material is not difficult, but he is an incredibly rude man, made inappropriate jokes in class, and replied to emails in three days with one word. Just watch videos on youtube and ask your TAs for help, bc jeremy will not help anyone ever
First day of class but this fire
AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Lies about what materials students will have available to study for exams, refuses to help students and mocks them when they ask for help, constantly makes uncomfortable jokes about students, does everything in his power to ensure students fail. The day he retires will be a national holiday.
he is just too mean
horrible professor. whats on the exam does not line up with what is taught in class. if you can take a different stats class do it. dropped it after the first exam because it was so horrible
Negative reviews here are true. Like others, I was told things that made no sense. The exams didn't reflect the material well. Not allowed to have his written notes, not allowed to retake quizzes for practice before exams, told to bum them off others. Directions for open notes are contradicting. Forced to use trash calculators. Get with the times!!
It feels like he wants you to do worse. Nobody goes to lecture because they're so useless and no material is covered during the lecture.
Discussion work is worded confusingly. He gave students zeros on an assignment if they were absent the Friday before Spring Break (attendance is usually not mandatory)! His lectures are extremely repetitive yet he somehow still fails to show us how equations are applied (which you need to teach yourself for the exams). There is so much busy work.
I think Prof Entner is a nice guy who is largely misunderstood at Cornell. His classes are hard. He is not the best at explaining material, and can sometimes come across as rude/dismissive to students, but I don't believe it's intentional. I probably wouldn't take him again. I didn't learn much about stats, but learned a lot about R programming.
the sun of a beach. He is mentally challenged.
TONS of work, normally 3 short quizzes per week but infinite tries at least, allowed to have class notes for the test which makes it rly easy to pass but the discussion hw is insanely difficult and unneccessary and just truly ridiculous, but I took ap stats in high school so the notes and a 4 hour study session was enough to get a 90
Just an actual piece of work. Makes jokes about how he doesn't want to pay child support and picks on students asking them if his tests makes them cry. Like what is up with you man. His class is ridiculously easy if you don't go and just study on your own/run through the notes, a lot of people are failing and you really should have no excuse to.
Wow. This Professor is the absolute worst at actually teaching ideas simply. He will take a simple concept and explain it in the most confusing way possible (im a physics major). He seems to think his students are "afraid of math" so tries to substitute w/ words. Math is a language of its own. Stick to engineering/math dept classes.
The biggest piece of _ ever.
It sucks that he is the only teacher teaching stats. the lectures are useless, not engaging. He also over complicates things when he could just say things in simple terms. I got a better grade on my second prelim than I did on my first and I didn't attend a single lecture and watched youtube videos to explain concepts.
Overall an extremely inflexible person who's hard to deal with
Genuinely the most confusing lecturer I've met at Cornell—including all of the upper level engineering classes I've taken. Attendance is not mandatory so just study on your own (do go to discussions though for the R sections) and rely on youtube videos. Haven't been to lecture after the first month so I don't know if he's mean or whatever
Not a bad dude; lectures can be very boring, but is very responsive to students' questions. Class itself is not difficult if you're willing to show up and put in the bare minimum amount of work, and you do learn a lot regarding the material listed in the syllabus.
Not a great teacher but people are exaggerating on these reviews. He isn't really that bad. The labs are awful and take way too long but exams are open note. I think it's helpful going to lecture but you don't have to. Exams only make up 50% of your grade which is nice and they are multiple choice. No practice exam though. Not great, not awful.
Jeremy, oh Jeremy. Lectures are useless: he explains topics in a dull and un-mathematical manner that goes in one ear and out the other. He once went up to my peer and asked her, "Are you crying yet?" He's in his own head and will go out of his way to waste time yelling at someone leaving lecture early, etc. The notes are as confusing as possible.
TAKE WITH ANYONE ELSE IF YOU CAN. Intro stats is not hard, he made it hard as possible. Notes are extremely confusing and he doesn't publish what he does in class. You can get a better grade in this class by not showing up and teaching yourself the material. HWs are worded so confusing and have nothing to do with lectures. How is this man a teacher
I have nothing good to say about Entner. He made lectures boring and long, spent a lot of time on topics that were easy but breezed through hard ones, and has easy assignments that were not reflective on tests. I would turn back time if i could to take this class with a different professor. escape while u can
To be honest, this is a super useful class with a okay professor. Yes he is a weird guy but he is pretty generous when writing the prelims. Everything that's on the quiz can be found in your note, which is allowed to take to prelim room. He also drops 1 out of the 2 prelims if your final exam grade is better than the prelim grade.
Probably one of the most work I've gotten in terms of time spent per week in my 3 years so far. Not all hard, but all tedious and boring. Don't take unless you need it to fill a req There was a girl after time expired on one of the exams that didn't finish transferring her answers into the bubbles and he didn't let her finish. That kind of prof.
Lectures felt very long and hard to get through. He would over-explain simple topics and ramble. Tests were open note, but notes aren't uploaded online. Half of the things he writes down don't make any sense. Had to watch videos online when I didn't understand a topic, and realized the topic was extremely simple when explained well.
Jeremy is notoriously one of the absolute worst professors at cornell. The only B I have received so far at cornell was a B- in his class. STAY FAR AWAY.
The course mainly covers linear regression and different kinds of ways of building models. Exams are fair and professor Entner overall is okay. I do think the course is helpful if you wanna pursue some careers relate to biostatistics.
honestly this was an easy A without any high school stats and some coding background. Stopped going to lectures because they were boring - make sure you do the discussions and lecture quizzes and you should be okay. The exams were not like the quizzes or lectures more so random general knowledge so be prepared for that. Felt like I learned nothing.
Don't take his class
Horrid lecturer but if you've already taken AP stats this class is a free A+ and the guy is so hilarious when he lectures.
I've seen a lot of poor reviews of this professor so I was worried when I began to take his class. After going through it, the reviews are absolutely true. This professor should not be teaching at Cornell.
Go to lectures even though he isn't the most amazing lecturer; missing them will make a difference based on how much you'll recognize the content on the test. Tests are not difficult, but you need to be meticulous to his standards on the discussion HWs. Unlimited attempt lecture quizzes, HW, and pre-discussion quizzes make up ~50%. of final grade.
Other reviews pretty much sum it up. Lectures are unbearably boring; Entner rambles and over-explains simple concepts. His assignments, while minimal, are mindless and unhelpful. Avoid if possible. Entner is a super weird guy and his class is generally a waste of your time.
legit the worst professor I have ever had. truly not a good guy. counting down the days to never have to be near him again.
Funny and makes the exams pretty easy, but not good at teaching. Overcomplicated most topics to the point of confusing people who understood them beforehand. I learned all of the concepts myself by reviewing the notes he gave us. Exams were open note and many of the questions basically tested your ability to find the right page in the packet.
His lecture style is bad. He cannot teach. I didn't miss a single day of class and did very well, so I feel like my opinion is valid. He tries to make students like him by making everything open note. I didn't learn a single thing, I just coasted off of AP stats. Everyday I sat in lecture, I spent the entire 75 minutes wishing I didn't go
Go to class and understand the lectures, then do discussion and hw. Attendance isn't mandatory but you should go to understand what's going on. He tries to make it accessible for all students no matter your background. He writes his own notes and gives a copy. TAs were mostly nice and helpful
The lectures honestly made the content more confusing to understand and I stopped going after 2 weeks of class. Exams are ridiculously easy becasue they are open note and are honestly easier than AP stats. One of the easiest classes to get an A+ in but Entner's teaching ability leaves much to be desired.
