Fall 2020 was Dr. Kaplan's first semester at OCCC and I had him for BIO1114. He teaches at OSU and received his PhD from OSU the end of July 2019. Dr. Kaplan was my lecture and lab professor during COVID 19, so we had on campus lecture and lab until spring break and online non-synchronous meetings thereafter. Caring, compassionate, accessible!

Dr. Kaplan - first semester at OCCC instructing BIO1124 lecture and lab during COVID 19. Didn't miss a beat. He. Is. AWESOME! Teaches at OSU/recent PhD grad -- loves his pups, too. He studies invasive plants, prescribed fire and ecology -- always itching to talk science! Caring, respectful, accessible -- heck-of-a-mentor! Teach upper level please!

Everything is done quickly and efficiently. If you e-mail him he will likely e-mail back around the time you close the e-mail app. He grades quickly, exams have been graded within a couple of days, usually less. He once had them graded about thirty minutes after the exam ended. He is always available and puts his full attention on your question!

Dr. Kaplan has been one of my favorite professors through out my college career. He is extremely involved and likes to make sure you know what is going on. I took him for Bio for majors and I did have to study quite a bit to get the grade. He is always available, take advantage of that! Super funny too, likes to interact with students!

I took Prof. Kaplan for non-majors Biology, and he was so HELPFUL! You do need to put in a decent amount of study time, but he works hard right along with you. He is easily accessible and always answers my emails in a timely duration. He makes me enjoy science! I would highly recommend taking his class.

I really like Professor Kaplan's way of teaching he is interested in his students and tries to be understanding with his work. he is very good at explining his class. I would take course with him.

In short he's been one of top educators I have come across who genuinely cares for his craft and how he applies it in regards to education. To put it another way, if I see any other classes I need to take in the future with his name on it. That's going to be my choice.

I learned a lot from this class. I felt comfortable asking questions and like I wasn't just filling another chair.

Simply the best

Dr. Kaplan is really easy to talk to and very accessible outside of class, or for asking questions before/during/after (or all like I do!) lecture. Doesn't want students confused! Also eerily relatable -- He understands how difficult this course is and works with his students individually on their study habits and how to tackle different concepts.

Non-major general biology student and at first was very nervous because I didn't have a good science background. Dr. Kaplan shared information with me in different ways and we ended up being able to have sciency conversations that felt natural. I might email him to meet for lunch to talk more science and ask more questions after the semester ends!

He was very caring and gave the students respect And help when needed needed.

I like to start off by saying that Dr. Kaplan is a outstanding Professor. He really does care about each students success in and out of his class. This course is difficult but he makes sure you will succeed. He is always motivating us to do the best we can and we wont take no effort as an answer. One of the best professors out there!

He was honestly the best. Made biology super easy to understand and was passionate about our learning. He was always available outside of class.

Dr. Kaplan challenges his students but in a good way. The class wasnt hard by any means as long as you stay up with your assignments. Hes extremely fair, replies to emails within literal minutes, and genuinely cares for your success, and focuses on each student individually.

One of THE most understanding teachers Ive had in my entire education career so understanding that it makes me work on myself as well to be a better person. He makes each Section easy to understand the way he breaks it down. Most importantly, for a student who was going through it early on, he gave me a chance because we all go through life...

The professor will require you to read the chapter in the textbook beforehand, so when you come to class you are prepared. It makes it easier to understand the lectures, since you have already seen the information before. Lectures basically turn into reviews. This method of learning is very effective, and can be used in any other course.

Dr. Kaplan was by far one of the best professors I ever had. He made sure everyone understood the topics and advised everyone to read the textbook chapter before class. Another thing I appreciate is he always males sure to post grades and reply to emails asap. Professor Kaplan truly cares for his students and does everything to help them succeed.

Dr. Kaplan is by far the best science major professor I've had. He's insanely fast at grading, and genuinely cares for his students to make good grades. This was my fav class ! Professor Kaplan is so nice and understanding, and also a really good professor. Hes always down to have fun but also teaches us when its time. Ive learned a lot from him and realllly enjoyed his class !!! Homework and quizzes are easy and tests can sometimes be hard, but hell prepare you for all of it.

Dr. Kaplan made it known from day 1 how much he cares about his students and their success within his class. He make himself very accessible to answer questions, or for one-on-one explanation/discussion of topics that aren't quite "clicking". I have had a LOT of college professors, but in terms of passion for teaching, I'd say he's top 2 for sure.

There are 6 tests and final worth most of the grade and then a lot of SmartBook work which takes a long time but throughout the semester they are easy As for grade cushioning. On the online course there is a lot of homework to be done to prep you for exam, but its helpful because once you take exam everything comes naturally! I seriously recommend professor Kaplan! He was a very good teacher. The class was supposed to be in person but ended up being online due to COVID. I did not have much interaction with him as I worked during the day and a lot of his meeting times were during the day or very late at night. but the two times I did have a chance to speak with him he was very understanding and very thorough.

If Biology makes you nervous take this professor! Professor Kaplan cares about his students. His communication skills are on point; responses fast to emails while always updating students of that weeks assignments. Provides extra credit with every exam. Tons of reading . I took his eight week course and will most likely pass with an A .

Dr. Kaplan is unlike any other professor I've had before. He sets up multiple study sessions through Zoom for each of the Unit Exams and Lab Exams and will stay with you until you've got the concepts down. He tries to schedule them so everyone can attend at least one for each unit -- 8AM reviews....10PM reviews. Thank you for being so caring!

Dr. Kaplan responds quickly to emails, grades assignments right away and isn't too prideful to admit when a mistake as been made. Dr. Kaplan is also very easy to communicate with and respects students and our time. This has been a wonderful semester and I am confident I am prepared for Gen Bio II under the guidance of Dr. Kaplan this past semester!

Dr. Kaplan is the best professor I've EVER had. Period. If you pay attention, read, join study sessions and actually try, you will earn an A. I was able to earn A's on his exams because he does such a great job outlining what material is on the exam. Took Professor Kaplan in an 8wk online course. He really cares about his students. He offers many different ways of electronical communication to make it easy to ask questions. Homework and exams were assigned weekly so be prepared to put some time into this class. He is overall a very attentive caring professor, if you need this class TAKE HIM!

Was an amazing professor! This was my second concurrent class as a high school student and I was able to manage his class with my regular classes at my high school. I took Dr. Kaplan's 8 week online course. Dr. Kaplan will definitely make you work hard and you will have to stay on top of your assignments. He is a great professor who actually cares about each student and anytime I had an issue or question on a test or home work assignment he always helped me out! He is also very quick with responding!!

To just say he cares is such an understatement! He holds zoom study sessions and has a GroupMe chat in order to contact him as well as extra credit for every single exam. He is an extremely dedicated and passionate educator, and with him, you will have earned your grade. In the midst of a pandemic, I could not have asked for a better professor.

I took Doctor Kaplan's General Biology 1, which cause of corona was an online class. It was a very challenging class but made you feel accomplished with each grade. Dr. Kaplan was very helpful, holding study sessions for each unit and offering private study sessions if needed. He is a very friendly and great professor.

I took his online 8 week class for Biology and It is some quiet of work but if you have some decent amount of free time you should be good because there is a lot of reading. But Dr. Kaplan is a cool teacher that will help you when you need it.

I took Dr Kepland 8 weeks class and it was the best idea. He is so understanding and he wants all his students to pass. All you need do is always check your emails, do all his assignments and his extra credit to get an A

I chose to take BIO1124 with Dr. Kaplan based on what I've been reading on RateMyProfessors -- Completely accurate! Our 8-week term started on Monday and so far I've met with him once for a tour of Moodle, Connect and an intro to the course, and twice for Unit 1 Zoom study sessions. My goal is to work as hard for myself this term as he does for us!

Hes a really good professor. If you make the time for the class youll definitely pass with flying colors. Theres a lot of reading and exams but hes gives mandatory extra credit to improve that exam grade. Overall I would definitely recommend.

While Dr. Kaplan's BIO1124 course is virtual, he is always available for you through email, Zoom and GroupMe -- Just ask and he is there to "facilitate your learning", as he says! Prof Kaplan was very professional and extremely knowledgeable. Answers were always answered very quickly and with detailed information. The class is a lot of work and we utilized the McGraw Hill connect program and you have to have it, which was about 100$. The class teaches a lot of information and very in depth.

Dr. Kaplan is one of the best professors at OCCC. He will go out of his way to make himself available. Regarding difficulty, this class can be an easy A--IF you do the work. Seriously, the workload is considerable; I say this as someone who already has a bachelor's. But as long as you do the assignments and perform decently on exams, you'll be fine

I took professor Kaplan's online 8-week course for biology. There was an exam every week but he provided lots of information for the units. I would take any class of his again.

I rarely seek help outside of class because I always feel dumb when I don't understand concepts. Dr. Kaplan thanked me every time I came to him with questions and spent time walking me through areas I was struggling with until I let him know I felt more comfortable. Thank you for being there for us every step of the way as you originally promised!

I originally chose to take Microbiology with Dr. Kaplan based on RMP feedback and word around campus with regard to how helpful and available he is. Micro doesn't start for another week, but he has been busy answering my emails regarding how to be best prepared for the course this summer. So far he is living up to the comments and I'm excited! Professor Kaplan has been one of the best professors I've had. I originally found out about him on RMP- I quickly looked to see if I could be in his class but all of his sections were full; I emailed him anyway and he responded quickly- he got me into his already-full class! Expect to read in this class, but also expect to be guided and do well.

Dr. Kaplan is by far the best Micro Professor at OCCC. He truly cares about students success. If you have any questions, hes always there to help. His unit objectives are very clearly laid out. If you put in the effort youll definitely pass this course.

I took Professor Kaplan over the summer and it was great. He truly does care about your grade and how much you learn in his class. Since this was an 8 week course, I spent about 3 hours a day working on homework and studying. If you miss a day, it'll be hard to catch up. I would 10/10 recommend taking Professor Kaplan for microbiology.

I would take Dr Kaplan over and over and over again. He is very super duper passionate about his career and teaching. He is the best professor to take for Micro because you can actually tell he loves microbiology, he is happy, enthusiastic its very contagious as a student. There is a lot of reading in this course and the work can get difficult at times. Although, professor Kaplan is extremely helpful, and available whenever you need assistance

Usual amount of reading and work, but just keep at a good pace and you'll be fine. if you fall behind, you will definitely have to hustle.

Professor Kaplan is a thoughtful, nice, and caring professor! He really strives to make sure each and every one of his students is succeeding and he gives multiple extra credit opportunities that can definitely help benefit your grade.

Prof Kaplan uses Connect for a majority of the homework portions. My only dislike is how the website is (nothing to do with Prof Kaplan.) He gives plenty of lecture videos to use as resources. Also is very genuine when responding to emails. 10/10

Really good teacher who can help get this absolute unit of a class down the throat. However, make sure that you pay attention to both Connect and moodle. It can be very easy to let something slip through! However, he is very nice when it comes to second chances and extra credit. Would recommend!

Professor Kaplan is very involved with his students, which is rare considering it is an online class. He has many ways for you to contact him if you ever need any help and he is always wanting you to succeed. Course load is about a medium, but it's easy. Anyone can get an A if you are willing to do the work.

Professor Kaplan was been very detailed in all of his emails on how much he wants all of his students to succeed. He gives many extra credit opportunities and provides extra videos and study materials outside of the online textbook. He definitely goes above and beyond in his teaching. He makes it easy to not only pass, but to understand the class.

Proffesor Kaplan is one of my favorite professors I have ever had. To start off the course he made it very clear that he is always there to help us. The class is not hard as long as you stay on top of due dates and read your textbook. I ended with an A+. Don't procrastinate and stay punctual and you will end with an A too.

Professor Kaplan is a must take for Gen. Bio. courses at OCCC. He is fantastic and gives tons of opportunities for extra credit. I really enjoyed this class after dreading having to take to take before the course started. 10/10 for Kaplan. He is what every professor should be. Dr. Kaplan is the best professor I've ever had. Email him at 10pm on a Saturday night and he'll either respond immediately or first thing in the morning. There were several extra credit opportunities throughout, and at least one for every Unit Test adding ten points to your exam score. He's always open to feedback and genuinely invested in you.

Professor Kaplan's Biology 1 was my first major-specific course and he was constantly communicating what was due and answered all questions I had throughout the 8-week course. I felt that he cared about my grade and helped me understand anything I didn't understand with just the book. I would take him again if given the opportunity.

Dr. Kaplan was an amazing professor if I ever need to take another science class and he is an option I will definitely signing up. He was very clear from day one how he grades and how he expects work to be completed and turned in. you are given many opportunities for extra credit and would be crazy not to take them.

I was very nervous to take Biology for majors but professor Kaplan made it enjoyable and easy. As long as you do your work, you will end up with an A. Also he gives multiple assignments for extra credit. This will definitely be your favorite professor.

Professor Kaplan was awesome! You will be using Connect as well as Moodle to do assignments. He always responded to my emails and is quick to upload grades. He also allows for extra credit opportunities. He wants you to succeed. Get all of your work in on time and read the material and you will have no problems passing.

Professor is a really nice guy and gave everyone a generous extension when Moodle was down for a few days. To be honest, this class was difficult for me, but that's probably because it's a lab and I was also in another class. I'd definitely recommend taking it as your only class if possible.

Sheesh people! Reading the 2/5 posts this semester was appalling. Rookies -- KNOW WHAT YOU'RE SIGNING UP FOR! Dr. Kaplan teaches 8 week courses....yes that means it goes by twice a quickly as your 16 week course. I checked with the department AND Dr. Kaplan and ALL exams are proctored through ProctorU so stop complaining. If you need to cheat, sry!

Dr. Kaplan was the because science teacher I encountered at OCCC before switching schools! I recommend him to everyone because he actually replies to your emails and cares about the well being of students!

I thought this class would be hard during COVID times, but Dr. Kaplan makes it pretty easy for you. The class itself is not easy. As long as you get all your work done on time, set a good schedule to do weekly virtual labs on a specific day, and spread your other assignments throughout the week, you will not feel burned out and will pass.

Highly recommend taking Kaplan for bio 1124 over the summer. One of the best professors I've ever had. I felt like I learned a lot, without a ton of stress. He is very generous, willing to work with you if you show up to class. I can't recommend him enough. Very fast grader too, which is much appreciated.

Probably one of the best professors I've had in my college career so far. He really cares about all of his students, and will do everything in his power to help you suceed, provided that you are willing to put in effort. As a single mother that works odd hour shifts, Dr. Kaplan has been more than flexible in times I've needed to meet with him. There have been a few instances where he has happily met with me at 11PM on a Wednesday or 7am on a Saturday and each time he has a big smile and is ready to help me through any questions and concerns I have. Dr. Kaplan sends weekly update emails to our section that are more than inspirational and I completely understand why people choose to take his courses! His emails show how caring he is, the expectations we should have of him and what he expects of us and always tries to pump us up to move forward with confidence knowing he is there to help. Great!

I'll be honest, there are a lot of assignments and Dr. Kaplan was not joking when he clarified that his 8-week semesters were the same amount of work, but double the time of a typical 16-week semester. One thing that separates him from other professors is how much he seems to care about each and every students success and I for one truly feel that!

Doctor Kaplan is hands down my favorite biology instructor that I've had. He makes it clear where his priorities lie and where his passion stands. He is timely, knowledgeable, and tech-savvy. He makes it incredibly easy to contact him with any issues/concerns/questions and, he actually cares about your progression in his class. 10/10 experience.

Professor Kaplan was a great teacher. He was always very clear in what is expected from his students and what it would take to be successful in the class. I did have a few issues when asking for help, but I just turned to YouTube for some extra help on my own. I do wish that there were actual lecture videos instead of URLs.

I would recommend not taking this class as an 8 week course like I did. The class was a lot of material to absorb in that short of a time period. And There is no way this class can be taken with multiple classes on your schedule and a full time job.

In my experience, the workload is not a tremendous amount but due to taking an 8-week course, it was heavy. The assignments, quizzes, discussions, and exams we're not hard to understand and complete. There are usually 2-3 assignments per week with a discussion and one quiz per subunit and an exam at the end of the full unit.

I have so far loved this class. Dr Kaplan is a great teacher. He is always there to help when needed and gives you the opperturnity to work ahead so you dont fall behind. I feel like he gives you everything you will need to be successful in his class.

Super easy to fall behind in class since there are a lot of assignments but the assignments themselves are pretty easy. If you work ahead, you'll be set for the course. He's also very good at sending out reminders on what's due soon and great communication if you need help or have questions.

I have many teachers in my life. Professor Kaplan is one of the best ones I have had he is organized, responds quickly, and I can confidently say he cares about his students. I will say he is specific with some of the assignments but it is nothing nobody cannot handle. He is always free to help anytime you need him.

I like how professor Kaplan spaces assignments out for his course. It's easier to complete assignments throughout the week rather than the assignments all being due on one day. He also organizes them so the same types of assignments are due on the same days of the week, so it's easy to create a routine. Just make a calendar and you will be fine!

This course is no joke and time consuming! We have 1 exam, 3 quizzes, 3-4 Connect homeworks and smartbooks due every week. If you don't stay on top of your assignments, it is very easy to fall behind. Professor Kaplan opens ALL of his assignments up at the beginning of the semester so you can complete them at your leisure, but do them on time!

I never met a professor so eagerly ready to help his students and show that he really does care!!! He truly is a great professor!! Blessed to have him as one of my teachers. learned so much!

I had tried to get into Dr. Kaplan's course this semester, but his sections filled up very quickly. Even though I was not able to be in his section, he still met and tutored me weekly to go over the unit learning objectives either when he finished his lab sections in the evenings or at some point during the day. Thank you for being so available!

I took Microbiology with Dr. Kaplan and he helped me understand both Microbiology and Anatomy and Physiology II. For A&PII lab exam days, he would take the time to meet with me after micro lab or on Zoom at short notice and even invited me to join his A&PII study sessions. If you put the work in, he will double your effort!

I took Dr. Kaplan's A&PII based on his RMP reviews and they were very accurate and he did not disappoint! A&PII has a lot of memorization and Dr. Kaplan will not TELL you the answer, but will guide you on how to FIND the information through helpful hints and landmarks. Not only did I learn a lot, but I became a more diligent learner this way. TY!

Dr. Kaplan is very passionate about public health and laboratory sciences and he emulated that passion every session. In the past, there have been many lab courses I did not look forward to attending, but Dr. Kaplan's I looked forward to every time. He always had a big smile, explained testing procedures well and stressed importance of proficiency.

Let's just say that if you are willing to put in the work, Dr. Kaplan will be there right along side of you and meet with you whenever is needed. If you put the work in, your grade will show it and he is there to cheer you on when entire way. OCCC will miss you when you move back to MA, Dr. Kaplan!

Dr Kaplan is super nice and cares for his students. He's also funny, friendly, and easy to talk to. Homework was straight to the point. As long as you put in the weekly effort to study (this is A & P II after all) and look over the materials he gives you, you'll do fine.

I had Dr.Kaplan for microbiology and would highly recommend him! He was very involved with the course as well as extremely responsive to emails or questions!

He is very helpful in helping you pass as long as you do the work. Lecture he gives units with objectives and that is what you need to study for the quizzes and exams. In lab I constantly asked questions and he helped me out. I would totally recommend him and would take him again if he taught another hybrid.

Dr Kaplan has been the most influential professor that I've come across to date. He is very easy to connect with. He's a cool 30 something year old bro with gauges. Professor Kaplan is a phenomenal teacher. Absolutely cares about his students and what he teaches. If you need help he is right there. All you have to do is ask he'll take the time out of his day to help you and make sure you fully understand whatever you needed help on. Communicating with him is very simple both in person and through email.

Anatomy and Physiology is by far one of the hardest classes anyone going into a medical profession will take but Dr. Kaplan will do whatever he can to help you! you just have to be willing to put in the time to read and study!! I had a hard time when I was in A&P I class with the other professor because A&P is a hard class. However, I really enjoyed A&P II and it was possible because of Dr. Kaplan. He truly cares about his students and always tries to help. As long as you are willing to learn and study, you will be fine. I definitely recommend Dr. Kaplan.

Professor Kaplan was very helpful when it came to answering questions about the lectures and assignments. Since this was a hybrid class where you had lecture online and the lab in person once a week. The professor made it accessible to be reached through email or zoom, if students had questions over the weekend on the online lectures or the lab.

Very good teacher. Can really tell he cares about his students and wants everyone to learn the knowledge. Pay attention to the learning objectives, that is what all the test and quizzes are over. Do your best to research the material outside of the given material. Everything is laid out very clearly for what you need to know for lab practical's.

I highly suggest Professor Kaplan for A&P2. Hes very approachable and it is clear that he wants people to do well and learn. Hes always there for questions and makes it known he is. He submits grades quickly and offers some extra credit.

He was available via zoom, phones calls and more if you needed help and would help on any day of the week which is one thing i definitely recommend utilizing because I did not and when the lab exams got here it showed! Kaplan was by FAR the best professor I've had. He made micobiology easier to understand. You didn't have too much extra time for the online unit exams, but they weren't too hard. He made the lab super fun and had several opportunities for bonus points! I would 100% suggest taking him for any science class.

His easy-going demeanor really helped me to relax and stress less, which was incredibly helpful considering the difficulty level of this course. Dr. Kaplan made microbio way more fun and shared a lot of insight about real labs and potential careers in that field. As long as you show up to labs and pay attention, pass the class shouldn't be rocket science. Make sure to write down hints he gives before quizzes.

I am currently at the midway point of taking Micro with Dr. Kaplan and he has lived up to everything I've read on RMP! He is very caring, inspirational and takes all the time needed to meet and review with his students. Let's just say Dr. Kaplan is not at all a difficult professor, but the course can be very challenging if you are not keeping up with the reading and studying. He is willing to meet with you whenever you're available to review and provides a lot of opportunities to review information in many ways that really helps hammer in the important details.

I took genetics with him. There is only one problem with Dr. Kaplan's courses, and this goes for all courses as I have taken multiple of them: he assigns a tedious amount of laborious life draining smartbook connect assignments. It is HORRIBLE.

This is my third time taking courses instructed by Dr. Kaplan! Whenever I see his name for one of my core classes, I make sure I schedule around his section. He is very accessible outside of class and if you complete the work with effort, you will definitely earn an A. Not the easiest material, but he is there to help whenever needed.

Dr. Kaplan gave great feedback and was there to meet with me when I needed to review information. The course had a lot of assignments, but I thought they were spaced out enough so that I could get everything completed on time. Overall a great course and I'd take another with Dr. Kaplan.

So so much work in this course but Dr. Kaplan was a great professor and make it as less stressful. I'd take a course with him again because I did learn a lot, but I'd have to make sure I wasn't already overloaded with other courses since there is a lot of work to complete in 8 weeks.

I had a great semester with Dr. Kaplan! He seemed to respond quickly, but did note at one point to double check emails that he had sent when I had asked questions that were already answered. I'm not sure if this was a similar situation from the response below, but I would take another course with him in a heart beat. Thank you Dr. K!
