Over simplifies lecture only to have his tests be overly hard and tricky. Never been more frustrated.
Jeremy is a great teacher! He is easy going and funny, not to mention cute. He really knows the material and is good at explaining concepts. You should show up to his lectures, because points out certain things that will show up on the exam. The only way you would fail this class is if you put absolutely no effort into it.
Very good instructor. He makes the class very interesting and points out what he is going to test you on. He also provides you with an exam review sheet which is very helpful. If you cant make it to his office hours he is willing to meet you at another day and time. I really enjoyed this class.
As a geology class, it can get pretty technical and dull, but he makes the most of it. He's really easy-going. You could sleep in his class without hesitation, and you probably won't suffer the consequences b/c he posts his lectures online. He also gives test review sheets beforehand. So long as you go over his powerpoints you'll do fine.
His lectures are soooo boring and dull. his monotone voice definitely does not help. Half of the class would always be asleep. He does not give out a study sheet for exams, so you really have to pay attention and study. I bought the book and we barely even used it.
His tests are based off of his PowerPoint lectures, so even though you could miss class and take notes online (posts on Webcampus) I wouldn't recommend it. His lectures are helpful and he'll tell you outright what will be on the test. Don't bother buying the book unless you want to do some extra studying on your own. An overall laid back guy.
First off, he doesn't really give pop quizzes because he tells you beforehand when he's giving it. It's only a pop quiz if you didn't listen. He puts his lectures online, which takes a load off because I can sleep in the class stress-free. And sleeping is kindof inevitable; lectures can be dull, but there are interesting content. He's a fun guy.
Dr. Koonce is really passionate about Geology, just a really easy going guy. His lectures are interesting and really allows you to absorb and learn material. He cares about students doing well in his class.
You just need to show up. He puts all the stuff on the test in red font so you know what to study. He makes this boring class pretty interesting. There aren't too many grades though.
Attendance was mandatory if he announced an in-class assignment or quiz the lecture before. Tests weren't easy but weren't too difficult. Lectures were a bit boring. Koonce can be funny and he is super nice. I wouldn't take this class again though.
Professor Koonce is awesome. His class is lecture-heavy, so prepare for notes. However, the notes are hidden treasures. They will 100% help you on exams if you go back on them and create study guides using the review questions. Koonce also replies to emails extremely quickly and is very good about communicating. Textbook is not needed! Just show up
Koonce is a nice guy and gives good lectures. Attendance isn't required and he posts the lecture power points after class but the one week I didnt go, I didn't do very well on the test. I suggest going. No assignments, just tests- make sure you study.
Lectures all extremely boring but Jeremy always adds small jokes. He just reads off the powerpoints. Powerpoints will be posted after every class period, so attendence is no big deal. Study the lab readings - they help you learn.
go to class and look at the powerpoint for the review on the exam, great teacher. really awesome guy. Take him if you can, He really cares about his students.
Koonce is a wonderful instructor. His classes are lecture-heavy, but he posts the powerpoints online after class, and they're all really easy to understand, so the material isn't too hard to grasp. He explains things extremely well. He warns you of quizzes and includes study guides for all exams. Cares for students, would definitely take again!
All the information you'll need for the exams he gives directly in his lectures. The exams are straightforward and if you fill out the study guide he posts before each exam, you will pass it no problem. His lectures always keep you interested. He honestly is a really great professor
I like this class a lot because he is very clear with expectations and gives you all the information you need to pass. All you have to do is take the time to study the lectures and you can do great in the class! There are quizzes, and tests--that is all the grade is comprised of. He is very helpful and nice if you talk to him outside of class
He is an amazing teacher. He goes into great details about the content he is teaching.
One of the best professors I've ever had. He's very interested in students' success. He's very well prepared for class and funny which makes the class all the better. Extremely helpful and approachable, always willing to answer your questions and work with you to help you understand the material. Good amount of homework but nothing you can't do.
Super great professor; all of the test material comes straight from lecture, he even highlights the most important info in red on the slides. He also provides the slides on blackboard after class. Very few quizzes and in class assignments, he always tells you before you're going to have a quiz and specifically what section to read.
Professor Koonce's expectations are very clear. He lectures for the whole hour & 15 minutes, but his exam questions come straight out of the lecture notes. He continuously mentions that students can email him or visit him during office hours if anyone needs help. Just a heads up - your grade mostly consists of exams and quizzes. Make sure to study!
Koonce was a good professor. His lectures may not make sense the first time, but that's hydrology. He made sure to make himself available for questions about homework or lecture.
Dr. Koonce is nice but his lectures are boring, which makes it difficult to pay attention. That said, everything is put online, so you only need to attend whenever there's a quiz or test and he drops your lowest quiz score. He doesn't upload WebCampus quiz grades though, so you wouldn't be able to correct him if there was ever an error.
He lectures for the whole class period for the most part but he does post the lectures on WebCampus afterward. You need to study for the exams, they consist a lot of what he lectures on so prior knowledge won't be much help here. You don't need to bring your textbook to class and he won't really be able to tell if you read at home or not.
Go to his lectures! The notes are all based on his test. Not a hard class but the amount you study is what you will get for your grade. there are 3 tests that really determine your grade. I got a B on two of the and a C on one of them so my overall grade plus the exam was a B. He is an outgoing guy, understanding, and passionate about his studies.
Koonce is a good guy but it's ludicrous that your grade for a 100 level class is based solely on 3 exams. Attendance is non-mandatory but he took attendance 5x. His exams are based off his lectures and there's a few times where he gives 5 Q quizzes and extra credit. Geog. isn't the most exciting subject... It's okay, I guess.
Great class and great professor. No homework, just small assignments and quizzes. Attendance is not mandatory. He is a funny professor that wants you to learn and pass. I would recommend taking this class if you need a science credit.
He's alright, he goes way too fast on the notes and rarely lets you copy them all. His tests are hard unless you pay attention.
Dr. Koonce is awesome. I rate a difficulty 3 because I'm not interested in the subject BUT he makes it interesting. Cares about his students, but come to class for your own benefit! He gives "quizzes" that aren't anything that you need to really prepare for. Wish Dr. Koonce taught other subjects so I had reason to take him again.
Super cool voice. Easy class. Posts lectures on webcampus after class, so just show up to make him feel better and in case of "quizzes" that he tells you about before hand. Book is needed to study for like 2 quizzes. Content is super boring, but he's a really nice guy that cares about his students. 10/10 would take again.
Dr. Koonce is really nice, usually grades quickly, is willing to help if asked. The curriculum for GEOG 103 is pretty dry + lecture-heavy, but he does his best to make it interesting with movies and personal anecdotes. Tests are fairly easy + based 100% off of lecture (which he posts to WC after class), so you don't need the textbook.
Professor Jeremy is a good professor. The class is relatively easy. Lecture notes and videos are very detailed. I rented the book on Amazon, didn't use it once, the lecture notes were more than enough. For me, the material was pretty interesting and the quizzes and exams are easy, if you do the lectures, and you have plenty of time to do them.
Prof Koonce is an amazing professor. His lectures are informative and entertaining (because of his personality). He responds to emails quickly and is very understanding. He makes it a point that all his tests come from his lectures, so you just need to show up and pay attention and you'll do fine. I am excited to have him again next semester.
Professor Koonce is a great professor. This class is very straightforward. He doesn't check attendance, but I don't recommend skipping. He does upload the lectures after class, but it is best to attend class since he explains things more thoroughly. He gives students the opportunity to get easy points during class! He is an easygoing professor!
Your grade is based on a few quizzes/ exercises, 3 exams, and the final exam. Koonce is a nice guy. He posts the lecture presentations and is helpful during office hours.
The professor is really great, i just thought for an entry course it was pretty rigorous. He explains things clearly, but personally the exams were quite challenging in my opinion. My 400 level classes were easier than this one. If youre great at science, Id recommend.
Dr. Koonce is a great professor, he teaches the material very well. The grade that you get in this class is based on how well you do on the tests/quizzes. His tests are easy, you just have to study the slides he provides and he will warn the class about upcoming quizzes. If you need help, you can ask him, hes very nice & helpful.
Professor Koonce is a great teacher! He bases the quizzes and exams only from his lectures, although attendance is not mandatory I highly recommend going because he gives extra credit at times to people who show up. He posts all the lectures online so just study those and you'll do great!
By far my favorite professor. For someone that isn't interested in science, the class will be boring and he acknowledges that. He is hilarious and is *very* specific when it comes to the information that will be on the exams. I would take him again, in fact I will be next semester. Just know that if you skip you won't do well. Posts lecture notes.
His lectures were interesting, but super long and had too much information. He isn't a bad professor, but I would've chosen to take this online. We had quiz/exercises in class and 4 exams which include the final.
Professor Koonce is a solid choice for anyone who wants to take a simple, albeit boring, science. I'm planning on taking him again for GEOL101. The content is self-explanatory and simple to understand. I would've gotten a better grade if I just studied some more, but that's on me. He's extremely kind and is helpful during office hours.
Koonce is a great professor -- he understands the material well and makes it easily understood. I skipped class on quite a few occasions, and I still pulled away with a B. The class is pretty much all powerpoints; however, he posts them online after. They even include a little section for study topics. Easy class, especially if you show up.
If you need to take a class like geography, I couldn't think of a better professor. The material is dry but occasionally interesting and he makes it as engaging as possible. Don't be like me and miss a handful of classes and subsequently the quizzes.
The tests came from the powerpoint so make sure to review those beforehand. He does include chapter reviews at the end of the chapter to help study. I went to his office hours and it does help improving my test grade and also understanding. There are 5 minutes quizzes throughout the semester but he will remind you so don't worry!
Professor Koonce is a pretty rad instructor. The best thing about the class is that you don't really need the textbook since he lectures and powerpoint shares all the assignments. The class atmosphere is pretty amazing because you show up and learn on your own or with other people. Ultimately, your grade in this class depends on you.
Very nice professor and makes his lectures fun to listen to. He gives graded quizzes with advanced notice. There are only three tests, including the final. Everything on the tests can be found on the powerpoints online, but study the slides very well. Final grades are only based on the tests, quizzes, and the separate lab section.
He taught the class well, the content isn't the most exciting so I can't really blame him. Clear standards on when quizzes are, exams, etc. Exams were fair, based on the lecture slides. First exam content is mostly review from Geol 101, the rest is pretty much new content, so make sure to study! Professor Koonce takes the time to make sure u learn!
Professor Koonce was a super chill teacher and his class had no homework. I got by without purchasing a book but his tests are kind of hard. The class was overall entertaining and very informative.
Asynchronous GEOL 102 Online with this professor was extremely fair with no tricks at all. There were weekly modules with recorded lectures, with a 10 question quiz based on the lectures. There were two midterms and a final, and all tests took questions directly from the quizzes. Reading the textbook was not required to succeed.
For an online class he was a good teacher. Class was asynchronous, and he didn't require you use the book. Homework and labs were easy with the materials provided. If you read over the manuals and powerpoint slides or have them up while talking the quizzes you'll be fine. If you do well on the quizzes you'll do good on the exams.
Lots of pre recorded records if you want to take the class online. Beware of lecture quizzes every week and keep up with lab assignments. Labs are a bit harder since it is online but it is manageble.
boring
The best Professor to take this class with, hands down. Really friendly, and very passionate about Geology. The test are really easy, as it is everything based off a lecture. A really easy A. Labs are tough though, so make sure you know your minerals.
Make sure you attend all lab demos. The lecture is all recorded in advance and some quiz questions are really wonky/specific/in-depth for a low-level course. Tests are the same as quizzes. Professor is available for questions and super nice but you only get one timed try on quizzes so it isn't super helpful to reach out.
Dr Koonce uses well prepared PowerPoint slides to assist his lectures for geomorphology, which is super helpful in organizing study notes. Hes really organized, fair, great communicator, and is responsive to requests for outside clarification. He goes out of his way to consider how his course can be improved. Generally, an excellent professor.
His lectures are easy to follow and it is honestly an easy class. I mostly used his lecture slides to study for the tests and I have gotten an A on each test.
Not a good class. The material is not really interesting and you will struggle to be awake in class. If you are a geology or environmental science major you are stuck with it.
Koonce was such a nice Professor. I took this class for a gen Ed requirement and struggled so much. I was almost failing but he was so willing to help me and find new strategies to study. He truly cares about his students!
You really need to pay attention in class to understand the material. Overall good teacher
Boring class, and likes to fail people as exams are very hard and study guide is unhelpful and a waste if time. When I took this class with him the average score on his exams were D's. Avoid.
very engaging during lectures and easy to follow. quizzes/exercises every few classes to encourage students to come to class. the material covered during lectures is on tests, no trick questions. grading is fair, only reflected on how much you study/prioritize the class. cares about his students and WANTS you to pass.
If you pay attention during lectures and take notes you'll do well on the exams. There are three exams that are 50 questions, one final 100 questions, all multiple choice, simple questions. Grade is made up of pop quizzes, lab, and exams. I didn't study and spent most lectures working on homework for other classes.
Professor Koonce made Geography fun to learn. Attendance was taken pretty regularly but he drops 2 attendance grades at the end of the semester. There are weekly or so quizzes, but he also drops the lowest 2 grades for those. Exams are easy as long as you go to lecture and read through the slides.
He's super chill and very easy to understand. It's basically the class that's very hard to interpret but he knows how to give good examples. He does grade attendance, but uses it for extra credit only so it won't affect your grade negatively. He does give pop quizzes but does inform you the class before.
Dr. Koonce is one of the chillest teachers I've had. He is always accessible outside of class and wants to see you understand the material. He's even helped me for upcoming exams by quizzing me on material I missed on previous ones. Attendance is mandatory if you want to pass, but it's not something he's strict about at all. It is lecture heavy.
Overall a good course. The lectures are pretty boring and lengthy, but you can definitely tell he has a passion for what he does. Don't trust his study guides though. You'll really only use like half of it.
Lectures were very well done, the slides he provides are useful outside of lecture but better when taken in while he lectures, very clearly states when. something is important and answers questions completely and fully, is aware and helpful of certain circumstances such as illness making you miss a exam, and allows you to make it up if contacted.
Jeremy is great, the best part of this class are the lectures and just simply watching the lecture without even taking notes will give you a great understanding of the concepts as Prof. Koonce explains them very thoroughly. The study guide he provides for each exam is also incredibly helpful very clear.
The class is easy and you can get good grades on the exam if you study. Just be aware that most of your grade is made up of 3 exams and the final. The lectures are a bit boring however he'll let the class know when something will be on the exam. Professor Koonce is overall nice and you can tell he wants his students to do well in the class.
There was no homework but that also meant that your grade relied heavily on the exams. They aren't hard as long as you show up and pay attention during the lectures and study. Professor Koonce was great at teaching the material and is super passionate about his job and helping students.
Pros: has character/passion, loves working with students, supportive/understanding Neutral: large class size, Cons: none imo! I agree with all of the good reviews, def a very good instructor! I'd love to take him for GEOL 102.
Total RESPECT for his teaching. However, he is VERY boring because he talks a LOT and there is not much class interaction. His grading is NOT flexible and VERY strict. It is FAIR GAME and if you do want to have a good grade in his class, GOOD LUCK! I really do mean it, you can NOT mess up any EXAM, and if you do GOOD LUCK recovering your grade!
His lectures sometimes felt long since it's a lot of material, but he is always willing to help his students. I strongly recommend making flash cards for this class. Regardless of class load, he as a professor is funny and gives us "hints" on what will be on the exam (basically straight up tell us).
He is very strict with his grading, at best you get a C+ in the tests and the lectures are quite intense. I would take another class and not audit had it been different. He's alright and all, but he should do better with teaching the class and complaining about the grades his students get.
Don't be fooled on past ratings, Professor Koonce is the guy you definitely isn't someone you want to take if you want your GPA to be saved. His lectures are heavy but the exams that you're going to take are 80% your grade so if you fail those good luck bringing those up. AND to make things worse, the review questions aren't even on the exams.
Took in-person in the summer. There was 2 midterms and 1 final, all of them being multiple choice. Professor Koonce lectures extremely clearly and communicates what is important. Didn't study at all and just paid attention in class and did well. I'm not a Geology major but it was very manageable and enjoyable class. You are lucky if you get him.
With this being a summer course, there was so much condensed into 1 term. The only reason I didn't score higher on my exams was because I didn't study enough. The tests were VERY straight forward & he gives hints on what to study. He encourages students to visit him during office hours and shows that he truly cares about his students.
the most boring lectures and material is even worse. not his fault i hate geography but his exams are dreadful.
His lectures are very boring which makes class feel like forever, he doesn't really give out homework But you will have to study a ton to get a good grade in his exams which means you will be writing all of the notes to study for his exams
The exams are very lecture-based, I truly believe if you do everything right (actually go to class, take notes, and study for such exams) you would definitely succeed in this class. Sometimes he gets side-tracked but overall a great class to take. I also find him very sweet
Very down-to-earth dude, which is pretty fitting considering the course. Extremely passionate giving his lectures and answering questions. You definitely need to put in the work and study for his exams, but they are doable. Bonus points if you get Tim for your lab TA.
This professor is fair, but his exams are only based on lectures, not the textbook. Don't buy the $80 textbook; use free online resources instead. His lectures were vague at times, and exams included topics not in the slides, which hurt my scores. Clearer lectures or better alignment with exams would greatly improve the class.
Professor Koonce's lectures were boring and long. He often gets sidetracked and after a long tangent let's you know you do not need that information. Almost your entire grade is based on tests, which is only based on lecture, and the review he gives you does not translate. Good guy, not a good professor
Professor Koonce is a truly amazing guy, it's just weird little habits that you can tell he's always abided by that drag his scores down a bit. Your grade is very reliant on quiz scores, and even more so on exam scores. Pretty relaxed on late submissions, as long as you can provide reason. Overall I wouldn't advise against taking him, good person!
Had him my first semester he was very kind and respectful towards his students. His lectures were heavy in content, but easy to follow. His exams were easy if you paid attention in class and did a little bit of studying. Once a week we would have a small assignment in class that he would give you the answers to at the end, so basically free points.
This prof is a great lecturer. Super engaging and interactive. Feels like a TedTalk each time. Very clear about what will be on the exams. Three 50 question multiple choice midterms. Occasional Kahoots followed by quizzes based on the material in the Kahoot. Occasional in-class assignments which are a free 5 points.
He was great but if you aren't a goof test taker, don't take his class. There are random in class points assigned but otherwise it is 4 exams and that's it.
Professor Koonce is passionate, as shown in his in-depth lectures. He gives short quizzes on Wednesdays. No homework. Some say he's a bad professor or the class is hard, but those are usually the ones who don't bother to give the class any effort. The exams are (obviously) based on lecture content. If you put in any effort, it's an easy class.
Tough class make sure you start studying early!
For a 100-level course, this class was overwhelming. Exams made up 90% of the grade—three midterms (60%) and a final (30%),with only 10% for attendance. Each test was 50 questions, closed note, and packed with terminology. The professor even called it a “part-time job.” I dropped it to avoid risking my GPA on another exam. Good luck
Dr.Koonce is one of the nicest professors on campus. He's very caring, understanding, and easy to approach. You will do good in this class as long as you put in the effort too. His course work isn't too hard but it's a lot of terminology you have to memorize between the 3 exams but it's very well doable. I will miss being apart of his class 🤒
Solid prrofessor, just make sure to study and ur good.
He is very passionate about what he teaches. He is easy-going and tries to help you do better. His class isn't really that hard as long as you pay attention and study.
Awesome professor, you can tell he loves what he does. There are 3 50 question mult. choice exams that as long as you study for them a little you will do good. Occasional in class assignments are very easy and often free points. As long as you do your work in the lab as well it is easy to pass. His lectures are very important to pay attention to.
Chill guy, clear well-outlined course. Posts lecture slides online.
Loved this professor! He was a sweet heart to talk to in office hours and cares about all his students. This class is based heavily on the exams throughout the semester (four, 15% each) but they are not bad at all if you study for a little. The exams are multiple choice and have repeating questions from the previous exams or the lecture quiz
