Interesting material, clear lectures, cool teacher. Notes and slides available for download online. Perfect.
Very very easy teacher. The material he wishes you to know are directly in his notes and slides that he makes available online. There is alot of material to know. But the tests showed more of how much you could memorize rather than applying the information.
Pretty Cool guy. Very funny and has a great smile and laugh!!! Don't be late to class though, he'll stop and stare you down as you take your seat. this lab was pretty easy if you are looking to fulfill a lab req. he is super into flies and puts in a lot of time helping you outside of class. TAKE HIM!!!
really good teacher, very approachable and you learn alot!. Test are not hard but require you to know very specific details but if you do the study questions and look over all his notes you should be fine. I really enjoyed his class and felt like i learned alot!
i think jeremy is the best teacher ive had at ucsc. very very nice and approachable....you will need to put work in if you want to do well but getting an a is actually attainable with him. if i had the chance i would take every bio class with this guy
He is a very good lecturer, test are from lecture notes (though there is a lot of them), it's an interesting class which will also help you do well. Though, he does take a while getting test back.
My goal in this class was to get an A. I got it and it was long hard journey. It is relatively easy to get a B because he gives you all the notes to study for. However, you need to memorize them front and back and know how to relate and apply them in order to get an A. But overall, a really good class.
This lab includes 2 individual written reports on basic genetic cross, and recombinant cross; and a research proposal report with a partner. The lab itself is easy and sorta fun; the research proposal will take alot of time (if you want a good grade on it of course) and involves reading alot of articles, but overall i would recommend this course.
I was about to graduate and was kind of disappointed in all the bio class. This allowed me to graduated satisfied with my education. He is helpful, and the class is interesting.
His first time teaching bio20a but he is amazing and he went in depth to help you understand basic biology. His tests are fair because all the questions are from lecture slides. Read the book, memorize definitions, and you should be fine!!!
He's a great guy, but he expects a lot for a 2 unit lab: 2 ~8 page lab reports, complete notebook, a quiz, and a final. I think I spent more time prepping for this lab than my actual biochem class. There was a lot of expectation that we knew what we were doing in lab when it was never really explained to us.
Amazing Professor. Take time to go over notes and you'll do great in the class! Jeremy is a nice guy and a great lecturer. If you ever have questions, he's more than happy to go over topics with you.
He is a great teacher. I learned way more from him than I did in biochemistry class lecture. He is extremely helpful if you ask him questions. He wants you to learn as much as possible and explains things well. His tests are a little tricky. This is the best lab I have taken so far.
I would avoid this professor if you can!
Wonderful teacher. He is always willing to help you understand the material if you have the desire to learn. Also, he is very thorough and makes sure to cover everything that he will test you on. Any questions provided at the end of the lecture will be the exam.
Solution Quiz, 1 midterm, 1 final, 2 lab research papers, and notebook. Prof. Lee is one of the best professors at UCSC. He is clear and his exams is detailed. Go to his office hour/email. He will help you! He is also very understanding
His exams are incredibly difficult, next to impossible to get an A. Lecture is for the most part pointless. The rest of your grade is up to your lab TA. This 2 unit was way more work than most 5 unit classes. Yeah he is super helpful and you do learn alot but he makes this class way to much work. The 2 scientific research papers are also a pain.
He has a passion for teaching and is really, really nice. That being said, the two ten-page papers take up a lot of time. Getting an A is possible but tough. Really depends on your TA, go to their office hours.
Jeremy is a great professor, not the most organized so you have to bear with his messiness and jumping around. Lab mostly consisted of looking at animals through microscopes which was not very exciting. I learned the most by doing two presentations within the quarter, one about an animal life cycle, and the other a research proposal you design.
Worst professor ever. Useless to go to his lectures. Makes exams super difficult for a course that already has a low passing rate, and on top of that grades super harsh. Each frq is a half page response, and you better get every single thing on the topic listed to earn even half credit, if he even offers that. AVOID THIS PROFESSOR.
Professor Lee was a great professor! Genetics is a hard class so its a matter of YOU putting in 110%. Jeremy would test us on everything that was on the slide, so know it all! Genetics in general is a lot of memorization. If you know the slides and do the homework and attend office hours your solid. :)
He's a great professor and teaches well. However, his multiple choice questions are needlessly and unfairly tricky. You can know the material well and still end up with a mediocre grade. A small curve was given at the end.
Easy lab class. Just have fun learning.
For a two-unit lab, this class was more work than some of my upper division 5 unit lecture classes. Jeremy is a great lecturer, but your grade depends entirely on your TA, who can make it a living hell if you get the wrong one. Get ready to write some of the longest lab research papers of your undergrad career.
Boring lectures. Strictly uses powerpoints but does go into great depth. PPTs are posted online; never used a textbook. INTENSIVE STUDYING IS A MUST!!! No homework, couple of quizzes and midterms.
The material is challenging., but if you stay on top of the readings and review the power points a million times you'll be okay. I loved this class and thought the material was interesting, if you're a bio major you'll probably like it! Also ask questions! He'll like you for it
Dr. Lee has amazing lectures! Very information specific. You must know your vocabulary! He will only test on things covered in lecture. KNOW YOUR VOCABULARY!!!! I really enjoyed his class and hope to have him again in the future.
The material in this class is very interesting. That being said, Jeremy is not the easiest teacher but definitely not the hardest either. Exams can be very tricky. It also seemed as if the TA's were trying to take off points wherever they could. Requires a lot of studying and be prepared to put the most time into this class. There was a curve too.
Honestly he makes bio much harder than it actually is. His tests were very difficult for me. While I feel his ability to go in depth is very nice but he expects you to know every tiny detail for the tests when that information will be irrelevant in future years.
Very difficult class for biology 20A, and he constantly makes references to his other class, Biochem, instead of teaching the class what we need to know. His tests are very detailed oriented, and he specifically said in class that if a person came to him with a conceptual question, he would not answer them because we "should know it already".
He wasnt' good. I read on here that he was a fair teacher but really sucks. He makes biology really boring and his tests are so meant to trick you. He's a tough grader and I honestly hated his class. He doesn't stop to make sure you understand the material.
Tough midterm exams with highly specific questions where if you happen to forget one minor detail, you lose a portion of -- if not all -- your points. Way too stressful and memorization-heavy for an introductory biology class. Communication with Prof and TAs was also difficult, as they always seemed too busy for undergrads.
Very stressful class. Quizzes and exams make up your entire grade. Exams are very detailed-oriented so memorize everything. The multiple choice is tricky and sometimes the grading for the writing portion seems unfair. You can know the material very well and still end up with a bad grade. It was the worst class I have taken in college so far.
Professor Lee is really thorough and clear with his explanations. However, his tricky tests demand detail in answers. Review the slides several times and explain his study questions to yourself. Supplement vocab with the textbook. This study plan will help you do well. He encourages questions, so I don't know what the other comments are about.
His teaching style is pretty standard, but your grade is based entirely off of quizzes and exams, so it's hard to get a high grade.
Is able to go in depth, but requires lots of memorization for his tests. Expect to know minor details or you will get points taken off.
This course was ridiculously difficult. I have never studied so hard for a class and I still failed, since 98% of the grade is based off of tests and quizzes covering unreasonably specific material. Super discouraging, especially as a biology major... I definitely would not recommend this class.
A very respectable and assertive professor. Likes to use tricky questions on his quizzes and midterms. Go to section and a lot of MSI; best way to succeed. Always do the review questions that he posts since they are similar to the test questions. No homework, so all the more reason to go to MSI and section.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH JEREMY. I read the reviews but decided I could handle it anyway. Worst descision ever. I studied more than I've ever studied and still failed (and so did my two friends I had in the class) because everything on the tests was so so so so so detailed and specific. No homework, which is a plus. But not worth it.
Absolutely the worst professor Ive had at UCSC. Does NOT care about his students, tests are extremely difficult since his corrupt TAs take off points for no reason. His exams are so so so so so specific that you better memorize each and every detail. I studied so much for this class and still failed. Grade is 2 tests and a final. Do not take!
Jeremy is a very respected professor. His class was definitely required a lot of work. His slides dont have many words in it so you have to pay close attention in class or record his lectures so you can review them after. His tests are tough especially his multiple choice. I put in a lot of time studying for this class but ended up with a B
Overall, his class is: detail orientated, challenging, doable. As biology majors, I think expecting a professor to be the easiest is unfair. Do all the review questions, do not miss class, & go to his office. Lecture slides will be very difficult to understand without his lecture. Type notes (in detail) in lecture. Exams entirely based on lecture.
Jeremy's tests are difficult and detailed (especially the multiple choice) but if you do and memorize all of his review questions, most of the information you need to know is in them. He is very helpful in office hours. I would definitely suggest printing out his slides and writing on them during lecture as its the best way to jot down all the info
His Lectures are interesting and enjoyable, but the multiple choice questions on his quizzes and exams are very very tricky. If you miss one tiny detail (that's not even necessarily on the slides) in a concept you'll get nothing - it makes studying seem pretty hopeless.
If you go to class, stay on top of your notes and review questions and get your hands on as many old exams as you possibly can you'll do fine. Attendance is key because his lecture slides don't have half the information he actually talks about in class. Exam MC can be a bit tricky if you don't know your stuff so make sure to study.
He was a good professor. He does test on material not necessary in his slides. As long as you read the textbook(short version) and compare with his slides you will get an A. Although I would try to go to class because he does say you what you don't need to know. I started reading after the 1st midterm (77) and I got an A on the 2nd.
Just use old exams amd youll do fine. He recycles all his tests. Easy A.
His testing style is to do multiple choice, vocal fill-ins and free responses. Once you get used to his unique testing style, its easier to understand whats more important as he lectures. He doesnt webcast though so go to class. His lectures are well organized and easy to follow.
This lab was super fun and you learn way more than a lecture could ever teach you. Do the prelabs and notebook, as they will pad your grade. The majority of you grade are the two papers. Make sure to EXPLAIN your results and what they mean in your analysis! And seriously, don't procrastinate on a 15 page paper. The TA will grade everything you do!
Professor Lee is a great professor for bio 100, I really enjoyed his class. The only problem I had with this course was that he brought in another TA for the last two weeks who was an undergrad. She was very nice but she graded unfairly, due to the fact that she did not know the material. I got 9 points back from a question graded by her.
Jeremy is one of the most fair graders I've ever had. His class is weighted in the perfect way - if you do badly on one thing, you're not entirely screwed. His lectures are pretty boring but the material is super interesting.
Lee was clear and repeated concepts multiple times in simple ways. Just memorize his slides and regurgitate it on his tests. I didnt open the textbook once, his slides and review qs are basically the questions he asks on exams. Not as bad as these these reviews make it seem. If you took AP bio, its all review. Kind guy, study hard. No homework.
Don't take this class with him. He is a good lecturer, but his test are way harder than they have to be and too long for the time given. There is no hw for the class nor extra credit, so your grade only depends on tests. 2 quizzes (5% each), 2 midterms (25%) each, and the final (40%). He does not curve the class nor does he care about his students.
One of the best professors I've had at UCSC. It's obvious he cares a lot about his students. His lectures are amazing and exams aren't too difficult. I definitely recommend him for biochem.
Warning: He is creepy to girls. Many people have come forward as having problems with inappropriate actions done by him.
You're gonna wanna prepare yourself to be on your own for this one. Took 20A with Lee in winter quarter, and I didn't expect it to be that hard. Not a fan of his lecturing style, and he doesn't webcast, so you have to be there. If you aren't there for the lectures, you're probably gonna fail. Not very easy to talk to if you need help with material.
Genetics is a challenging class that covers lots of information. Jeremy doesn't skimp on the details, but he communicates very directly. He is open to questions and wants students to succeed. Grade breakdown: 10% quiz 1, 35% midterm, 10% quiz 2, 45% final. Overall, I would definitely recommend taking this class with Jeremy.
Prof. Lee is an excellent lecturer; probably one of the best I've had for a science class. He goes over material slowly and clearly, making sure to repeat concepts multiple times before moving forward. Lectures are organized efficiently and in a way that boosts understanding of the material. Tests were heavily weighted (40% MT 60% Final)
don't take his class. he doesn't respond to emails and the class is asynchronous so you just cant talk to him. he barely tells you what to do for lab reports so you pretty much just have to do everything on a whim and rely heavily on your TAs. just prepare to teach urself with prof lee. oh and he will "hunt you down and find you" if u cheat lol
Gives little to no time on tests
I dropped the class so I can try again next quarter. I had a bad start & wasn't ready for the amount of work you gotta do and. For virtual classes: Lectures are pre-recorded and everything he says is game, aside of what is on the slides. No hw, 2 quizzes 10%, 2 midterms 50% and final 40%. He asks very specific questions, have to study very well.
Quizzes and midterms are difficult and unbelievably specific and he does not care about his students at all. I didn't sign up for his class specifically but he ended up teaching the one I was enrolled in. Avoid this guy at all costs if possible.
Prof. Lee is a solid choice for Bio20A. During remote learning, he prerecords all of the lectures and you can watch them at your convenience. They are somewhat long, but are concise and helpful. You should be well prepared for the exams if you watch all of the lectures and answer the review qs. His office hours are open and include review sessions.
Grade was entirely dependent on extremely specific tests with a lot of information in them. Anything he talks about in lecture might be on the tests, beyond what is on the slides, tests are closed note, tricky, and very specific. I studied extremely hard for every test and never got higher than a c. If you have test anxiety, DO NOT take this class.
Lee is an okay choice. Lectures (2x/wk) take many hours to get through bc they are dense but he is VERY clear and thorough. The time limits on quizzes are way too short and are worded to trick you which I don't think is fair given the time constraint. Good lecturer. Lots of studying. Strict on cheating. No homework. Hard exams. Attend MSI.
The lectures are dense but the study questions are there to help guide you. He is super nice and was really understanding in the beginning of the pandemic when I retook 20A with him (better than Tamkun imo). You do have to work hard, but it is a STEM class so it's a given. Questions are sometimes reused in exams and time management is a must!
The TA's grade his test so even if you answered your essay questions exactly like the way Jeremy said it in his lectures, you're still bound to lose points. The TA's in my quarter required seemingly trivial knowledge about the question in order to receive full credit even if the same message got across. Multiple choice on his exams are also tedious
Grade was determined by two quizzes, two midterms, and a final. There are two prerecorded lectures per week which are like 90-120 minutes each. There are also readings but I didnt do them and still felt fine in the course. Just look at the lectures and take notes on them to help to help you learn the information. I liked the lectures also.
I have taken Bio100, Bio20A, and Bio105 with Jeremy. He is one of my favorite lecturers at UCSC. He explains material clearly and in depth for understanding. Exam questions should not be a surprise if you do study questions given by Jeremy!! I definitely recommend going to OH - he is open to re-explaining difficult topics and is very friendly!!
I personally didn't like this class & the TA's who graded some of the test questions were extremely picky. Deduction points are a thing in this class. This class is fully based on quizzes and tests, nothing else. The only way I would recommend this class is if you are confident in your biology skills and comprehension. He also doesn't curve grades
Professor Lee's class was definitely one of the best that I have taken. Though his class is only graded by a few things (2 quizzes, 2 midterms, and a final), all of the information you need to be successful can be found in his lectures. I'd say the tests are fair. He is also very friendly and is willing to answer any questions in his OHs.
This class was challenging as it's based solely off of tests. The exams are fair, however the multiple choice sections are meant to trick you which is extremely frustrating. His lectures are a tad slow but he'll throw in a joke every once in awhile. He was also extremely understanding and accommodating when I needed to take a practice exam.
I am almost done with my third year here, and the other day I decided to look back over some old notes and found my notes from 20A. I get that different people have different learning styles, but professor Lee's teaching style matched mine perfectly. Lee paints a picture of concepts from the bottom up, so there is a ton of info- good info
he expects his students to memorize everything he says during class. the class is so poorly constructed. his tests do not give enough time.
Professor Lee is decent but this is an extraordinarily difficult class and everything you are tested on COMES FROM LECTURES so to study and do well, write down literally every detail. I’m very disappointed in this Professor because he graded our class hours before the deadline without any email which he said he’d send, and no room for emails
His exams are hard with a limited time. Hard to pass the class. He talked about curving the whole semester. But he ended up curving for 1%. Basically, nothing is changed. Definitely not recommended.
This class was decent in terms of how interesting the material was. He submitted our final grades just hours before the deadline and had said he would email us once he submitted them, but never did, so none of us got to talk about our final grades nor did he respond to our emails after he posted our grades. Completely screwed the class over.
Maybe his teaching and my learning style do not match. Your grade is entirely based off test and quizzes. Said he would provide a curve, basically he did not. Posted the grades day it was due, never sent an email to notify us. Never emailed us back after the grades were posted. On exams asked for insane amount of detail (no notes) little time given
TAKE THE 100 SERIES! You are graded on 2 quizzes, 2 exams, and a final which is worth 40% of your grade. In order to understand the material, you need to religiously go through his lectures. He is very picky on what you write during the essay portion of the exam, anything even slightly off gets no credit. If you have no other option, good luck!
Tests and quizzes make up your grade and he is a harsh grader! If you can, take this class with someone else. Unless you're ok with memorizing every single word that he says during lecture. He only curves for the final and even then, it's pretty terrible. Not a bad guy but would NOT recommend this class!
The class was graded out of 2 quizzes, 2 midterms, and a final. To do well in them you need to memorize everything he says during lecture. Honestly, his lectures were a bit hard hard to follow, and it would be recommended to watch recorded lectures more than once.
It almost feels as though Jeremy treats the course as a medium of aggression towards his students. Obviously that is an exaggeration, but it is clear that there is no grain he wishes to run parallel to. He lies about key material on exams with hopes of faking you out. His pride comes from designing an un-cheatable course, not from teaching.
He had some interesting lectures, but it seems like the only way to pass his class is if you're retaking it after failing it the first time. Graded on 2 quizzes, 2 midterms and a final worth 40% of your grade, you seemingly have to memorize every insignificant thing to do well. His multiple choice questions are ALL trick questions.
Biochem is a difficult class, but if you put in the work, it is possible to do well. Prof Lee explains during lecture what you do need to know and don't. The TA's are super helpful and go to office hours! If you are ready to study and dedicate a lot of time to this class, you will pass and do well. Prof Lee explains concepts clearly, just study!
While this class was hard, I enjoyed. Graded on 5 assessments, but it's not incredibly hard, especially on the free response and fill in questions. MC is much harder, as many questions include "A and B" options, but not impossible. He did say he might curve, and my grade of 81% was raised to a B. You just need to study and use his study questions.
His lectures are really interesting but the class is very difficult. His curve was very generous this quarter (I know students who had a 62% and passed) but definitely don't underestimate this course. The concepts aren't too difficult but the course is DENSE and moves FAST so you have to keep up.
Actively tries to trick students on exams. Ridiculously overpedantic and speaks over students when you try to ask him questions or clarify things. If you have the option, take it somewhere else. Focuses and hits hard in lectures on things that aren't on the exams, but brushes over topics he expects free responses to.
Class was very difficult but extremely rewarding and informative. Not sure why everyone discounts his study questions - they are your best friends for the exams. The lectures follow right along with them and if you know the answers to the questions, you'll be very prepared for the exams. Got an A committing their answers to memory. Highly recommend
very informative lectures and i grew to understand the way he lectured and learned a lot in this class. the problem was that the whole grade was tests and they would try and trick you and were very picky. i got a 65 percent and he curved 10 percent so i passed but it was very nerve wracking. take with another teacher if you can
All tests are MCQ, fill-in, and FRQ. MCQ is fair though he's tricky, fill-in is a lost cause. I studied all of his slides for him to test words he used once in passing. FRQ is hit or a miss, there is always one with info he barely skimmed over that wasn't in his study sets. He curves so even though he's not good, he's the least bad. 65% class avg.
amazing lecturer but exams are difficult. mcqs are really tricky, frqs are fair, and fill-ins are usually free points so it evens out. extremely kind and caring when you talk to him outside of class. his teaching style isnt for everyone but hes objectively a good prof. put in the work and youll succeed
His lectures are like a Ted Talk. His slides don't provide a lot of details, but listening to his explanations of the material is key. His tests can be difficult and preparation is definitely needed, but they are fair. Everything from lecture and his study questions are fair game. Attendance is not taken and readings not required.
Professor Lee is simply the best. Period. But your grade is only dependent on 2 quizzes, 2 midterms, and a final, which makes it hard to get an A in the course. However, his lectures are thorough and will prepare you well if you really just zone in in class. Do the study sets and read test questions thoroughly and you should be fine.
This class is not necessarily difficult. All assignments are manageable. There are weekly quizzes, but all info for them is given in lectures, slides, and protocols. Lectures are not mandatory to attend, but the actual lab is. Overall, this class was very relaxed.
not the most exciting lecturer but seems like a nice guy, and he explains things in a pretty clear way given the difficult subject matter. the grading based on just five tests--2 quizzes, 2 midterms, and the final--means a comprehensive understanding of the subject is key to succeeding. watch out for that second midterm.
Jeremy's lectures are very heavy with material. He explains concepts really fast so it can be easy to fall behind and feel lost. His exams cover everything in lecture and he has study questions to help you prepare for them so as long as you those you will be fine. My biggest advice is to stay fully attentive during lecture.
Lectures are long/boring and challenging to stay engaged with. He rarely, if ever, actually lectures on what he asks for in depth of his exams. Entire grade is based on the exam scores which are ridiculously difficult. He claims he curves but he didn't for my class (a lot of people didn't pass). I like genetics but I hated his class.
Professor Lee's class is challenging, but engaging if you stay focused. Rely on the free textbook, attend lectures, and use unstuckstudy for study prep to do well. Exams are tough but the curve helps.
I took him for biochemistry over the winter. I had a lot of difficulty in his class, he only used quizzes and midterms to determine final grades. I ended with being 1% away from a B and got a high B on the final, he refused to round up. Would not recommend take any other professor.
The tests are much harder and more specific than what is gone over in class. The grade is based only on quizzes and exams that are not curved. Very tough class and the prof doesn't care that the tests are too hard. Would not recommend.
Great professor. Super caring about his students, and I would recommend going to his office hours every week! Study questions help you a lot with the tests, and he shows that he loves what he does. I would recommend taking him for genetics and biochem!!! One of the kindest professors I've had and one of my favorites.
I was scared to take this class after many people complained about Jeremy, but I have to say it was the most interesting class I have ever taken. Lots of people blame him for the difficult content, but he really is an amazing lecturer and you can tell how much he cares about the subject and his students. You just have to go to lectures to keep up.
Was scared going into this class due to previous ratings. Lee is a very caring professor, even though grade is based on exams/quizzes, he provides study problems and review sessions that help you prepare for the exams. The exams are pretty fair, but you need to study, they relate to the lecture and he doesn't throw irrelevant things at you. 10/10
The class average was a 67, he did not curve. Grade was based on a midterm and a final both of which were graded harshly and over the top difficult. Tests were focused on random specific examples and confusingly worded. One of the worst professors I've had, if you have the opportunity to take anyone else I would highly recommend you do so.
Jeremy is obviously interested in the material he teaches, but the long lectures with little diversity make it hard to focus. He provides a break in the middle of class, but there is little to no interaction during lecture. The whole grade is based off two quizzes, two midterms, and the final, all graded pretty harshly.
Your success in this class is very dependent on how well you understand and apply the material. Use the study questions. go to office hours, ask questions. He is very knowledgable.
His class is really hard, since your grade is legit made up of 2 quizzes, 2 midterms, and 1 final exam. The midterms and exams are 90% of your grade. The questions are challenging, plus there are no study guides that are similar to his exam questions. Plus, the material requires a lot of memorization and is extremely vocabulary-based.
I love Jeremy. A truly amazing and informed lecturer, with true passion. Make sure to do the study problems ON TIME and come to discussion/office hours with questions. This class is objectively difficult but if you put in the work you can get an A and gain a whole lot of knowledge. Grateful for this class & can't wait to take more classes with him.
This is for BIOL 86!! Super cool class if you're interested in scientific research (don't take this if you aren't willing to read papers!) Jeremy has great insight on everything we discuss. The class setup is super lively and interactive. You only present once a quarter and the rest is other group presentations. Presenting is made less scary here!
