Cool guy. Interesting class.
I like the way that he has his classes work in groups. It's great to get peer responses. I'd really recommend Mumford for an instructor
What's with this teacher is that he is new and arrogant.
Although the readings are hard, Mr. Mumford has made us think about things we wouldn't have. I like that. He's helpful and not arrogant at all, just really knowledgable.
I think Mr. M is a great teacher. He truly cares for his students and wants them to succeed. This class has really improved my writing skills. Thanks Mr. M!

Nothing is up for *actual* discussion. If you have brain cells and like using them, you will be disappointed. All the style of a college level class but none of the substance. You will be subjected to a lot of doubletalk and hot air.

Mr. Mumford is a great instructor who helps his students get the best possible grades in his classes. Also, what I enjoy about his class is the fact that Mr. Mumford has students read a wide variety books that they might not read outside of the classroom.
He is a good teacher. I learned more about english. I think that this class is the reason I am becoming a better writer-
Highly recommended. Mr. Mumford comes up with excellent ideas for assignments, does a great job of getting the class involved in actual (*gasp*) discussion, and is very clear on his assignments. On top of that, he is -very- professional, and does not succumb to favoritism.
Mr. Mumford it's a very good instructor, if you need to take English class he's the intructor you want to have.
Mr. Mumford is an awesome instructor who challenges you not only as a student but on a personal level as well. Critical thinking is a useful tool and Mr. Mumford helps you hone that skill. He's cute too.
I had a good experience in Mr. Mumford's class. he uses a lot of current events to teach about critical thinking. he's funny and cute too!

He was a very laid back teacher. Seemed to really want to help students. I enjoyed his class.
Summer class was a poorly structured class. Comparing grading with other students, who put little effort into their work, the grades where all over the place. Never provided clear feedbeck and even following his "writing rules" could not get a decent grade. Debates were a joke, allowing some groups to go on at length and cutting others off.
His instructions for writing topics were confusing and he didn't appear to have a clear-set rules that he graded by. The debates and presentations were long, boring (or amusing) and one of the most chaotic things I had ever seen.
He really prepared me for english A and we had to write alot.
He's the best
How can anyone complain about Mr. Mumford. Not only is he one of the easiest teachers to learn English from, he has the best stories about fishing in Alaska and bumming it in Santa Cruz.
This teacher does not challenge me. He is disorganized and flaky. Did not even show up to our first class, did not always post assignments or not on time, did not consistently hold office hours or reply to e-mails. No grades returned until week 16. Without feedback how can I improve my work? Class sessions were only sometimes helpful.
Difficult to understand, kept changing course guidlines. Didn't grade essays until late in the semester so there was no way to know how your were doing in class.
I look forward to coming to class every Wednesday night. Professor is witty and hilarious! Assignments are clear and fun to complete and the ambience is relaxed and comfortable.
Not organized, no lecture plan, confusing with class expectations, assigns way too much work, doesn't grade it in time. He starts several new assignments on top of others, and his perception about college students is insulting. He's very strict and unavailable when you need help.
Every comment that is negative is TRUE! Most confusing professor I have had, he throws on a lot of work on you but is not clear on how he wants it done. Use use cengage.com/insite to do all the correcting, yet when you get your grade he has no comments to help you to improve. Stay clear of this professor!
Very good teacher, thorough about work and and teaches in a way that makes it easy to understand.
Took for an online class. He would take weeks to get back to emails, phone calls-long after the essay was due. He buys everything the online tutors say hook, line, sinker. I learned towards the end to resubmit my essay until I got a good review, and then turn it in to him. I graduate in two weeks and this is the only C I've ever received.
Overall it was an okay class. He took forever to grade things so you would have no idea what your grade was or how you were doing on the essay. Sometimes the homework was also unclear so make sure you ask around.I wouldn't recommend to take him you can.
I took his midterm engl 84 class and i got a B . He really helps organize your essay and gives you ideas for your thesis and topic sentences. He didnt just say okay heres a topic do an essay. like other teachers do so i really liked that he basically started the essays for us. the homework was not hard. the thing is that it needs to be one time
I took this as a short term class after taking 85 with him. I actually changed my major after this class. We read a lot and wrote a lot about all kinds of social issues like racism, social class, etc. I'm at Stan State now and still use what he taught me about essay writing. So I would say definitely take him if you want to learn how to write.
Took him for online English 1B and there was a lot of reading with work to do with each reading and then a essay for each. It was a lot of work but he graded the work within a week usually. I also went to his office during his office hours and he gave me a lot of help on what to write. If I worked on the essays I did good.
I took his class after having been gone from school a while and found it very helpful in preparing me for future classes not only in essay writing but also with the subjects that we read about. it was like sociology and political science all rolled into one. Our class had a great time and he was very personable. We laughed and had good discussins.
I was dreading this class when the semester started. The class turned out to be very interesting. There are not many points possible so make sure to take care on homework to do it all. There were 3 out of class essays and 1 in class for the final. Mumford grades hard but I enjoyed him as a professor.
Mumford is a pretty hard grader. I usually do really well in writing classes but he really made me work for it. Take your papers to office hours and he will give you really good feedback and you will most likely get an A if you change what he tells you. Homework is long, tedious, and graded harshly as well.
Disorganized. He doesn't grade until late in semester. Condescending. Steer clear. Oh and I had to buy books that we never ended up using.
Mr. Mumford, is a very knowledgeable instructor. as long as your on time and doing your assignments you will be fine, he explains material you are working on very well and if you got questions, do not hesitate to ask, he has a very good sense of humor on topics and the real world events. i learned very much in Mumford's class... would recommend it
Just finished English 13 and oh man did I work. It was hard at first but once you get the hang of things, it gets a lot easier. One thing to watch out for is that the points are low which means you need to do all the homework and reading. If you want to learn to write a good argument then take this class.
Am taking him for third semester. Started at lowest English class and I have to day that he is really good. Every day is new and he is very nice and interesting. He keeps us laughing and coming back to class. He assignes homework everyday but breaks everything down like the essays. I like that everything is online. he emails all the homework.
Professor Mumford is the most laid back person ever!! He is a cool guy but gives so much homework!! When you are working on something, you are already starting to work on something else. Despite all the homework, he is amazing and really does educate you. He also does things like grammer packets to help you.
He is a good teacher that gives you everything you are supposed to doand when its due. He is funny and I wold say take him if you want to learn.
Hard grader, but he goves you oppurtunity to try again with papers.
Chagned my life and helped me come back to college
honestly the absolute best english professor there is, broke down and explained what made a paper good, building each part of the essay so by the end you had your paper (with a little cleanup) the icing was letting us submit it to the online tutors and making changes based on their feedback, i hate writing papers and his class made it tolerable! A+
I took this class because I want to improve my writing but no what I excepted. There is a lot of reading and question assignments. He is a tough grader on essays. He barely gives any useful feedback when you take your essay to his office hours. In class we go over our assignments that we turn in. Youll learn from reading but writing essays is tough
Do not take if you're serious about learning. Nothing but in group discussions with clueless students, no lectures. Zero feedback or grades on ANY assignments all semester. Unclear expectations. Only grades some assignments at the end, the rest wont count even if done well. Absurd amount of busywork with readings and essays. Not stimulating at all.
Yes, if you don't like group work and collaborative learning then you won't like the class. Also if you don't really want to do work you also won't like this class. I found the class to be very insightful. I thought the content was strong and the course well organized. I liked how the different topics linked together. He did help in office hours
Great professor. Read a lot of articles and a lot of essay. Stay on top of the work.
Good teacher. I liked Mumford. Funny but serious. Learned a lot becuawe he gave lot of feedback on essays.
I really enjoyed Mr. Mumford. If you're lazy, find a professor who doesn't make you work because Mumford will. He's very respectable, gives feedback when asked, he's funny, helpful and genuinely wants people to succeed but won't pass them if they're not putting the effort in. There's homework every day and 4 essays (4th one is final).
Mumford is a good guy, but get ready for a lot of homework. The homework is not hard, but it is time-consuming. Each day in class, you get into groups and go over the homework, which is fun and really helpful. The topics for the essays may seem confusing at first, but by the time they are due, you will be an expert on the topic, which was cool
Lots of work and need to manage your time on assignments.
Great teacher. Still using what I leared in his class after transferring to university.
Professor Mumford is a pretty good professor. He makes the weekly syllabus accessible all semester, so you know exactly what you'll be doing and can prepare ahead of time. The class is pretty straight forward and once you get into a routine, it's pretty simple. His grading criteria on the homework isn't the clearest, which is the only downfall.
Great professor. Gives lots of assignments, but makes expectations clear and every assignment prepares you for the next one.
Cares and wants students to succeed. Understanding and laid back. Teaches good material to be used indefinitely, however there are some lacks in his teaching. He is not strict enough as in grading and does not assign enough meaningful homework regularly. Easy to pass.
This is a amazing professor. One of the best I have had at Merced College. Everything is so clear from assignments to grading. Very friendly, talked to students, and always cheerful with a good attitude. Highly recommend taking him.
Mumford was very helpful with essays and clear the entire semester with what he expected from the class. I feel that he has very much prepared me for being an English major. There were only less than 10 people left in our class so if you are not ready to do small assignments and essays every couple of weeks this class is not for you.
Professor Mumford is good at what he does. He also treats students with respect and does not treat them like he is on another level than them like some other professors. There is a lot of work but it is all on canvas. It is a super clear course and the whole semester is laid out from the start. Recommend!
Take advantage of his office hours, talk to him abt ur problems. he'll try&arrange the class around the student's needs. Essays r dependent on word count+quotes- use a lot of them. Attendance is mandatory, it's GRADED. gives little feedback on hw. ask him his reasoning as much as u can to improve. provides epdfs. lots of group time. make friends!!!
Mumford is a great professor! He emails within 24 hours and gives good feedback on essays. There are a lot of assignments and your grade depends mostly on the essays. You do need to buy a book for his class.
Very helpful and respectful professor. He would actually give good feedback and was not rude. He also very understanding
A student can meet all the expectations of an assignment and still receive a C. Class is structured around lengthy/meaningless writing prompts which are not creative and very repetitive. There is zero feedback. Grades are based on word count. Personal progress is not considered. Graded very harshly for being an intro-level class.
Professor Mumford helped me expand my writing development and helped me with my time efficiency skills which I am grateful for. The readings were very interesting and I feel ready to be an English major after taking his class.
I did great in this class and thought the professor did a really great job with teaching and giving so much feedback. As long as you turn in the assignments and meet the requirements you will do fine. I signed up for the next class with him.
I learned a great deal on how to start a research paper from beginning of idea developing to the end of writing research proposal. This is going to be one of the very few classes Ive taken in Merced College that I feel like Im going to benefit in my life in term of writing ability as well as thinking processes.
This is my first writing class ever to get an A in essay related assignment. I think I achieved an A in more than one writing assignment that make me feel like: I finally can write just like the classmates around me. This class definitely boosted my confidence in writing to an unprecedented level, and it thanks to professor Mumford.
Professor Mumford taught in such a way that it was easy to learn. I came into the semester knowing that researching and writing were not my strengthen, but after this 18 weeks I know for a fact I have grown. First in my confidence but also in my ability to research any topic I may be given. The modules built upon one another in a very cohesive way.
I took Mumford last spring and he was so helpful. He's very passionate about teaching his students. Just make sure to really follow his grading rubric and also be sure to answer every question in the writing prompts to do well in his course.
I really loved the topics we covered in this class. The only problem I had was how homework assignments are based on word count. I understood material and always completed assignments but received an average grade because I could not meet word count. I guess it makes sense since its a critical thinking class, but I feel he expects A LOT.
He was the first English professor that I had when I started college and I would not recommend him, he basses the entire semester on global warming and you had one essay but would change it every time, and he is a somewhat of a tough grader, so if you want an essay A I wouldn't recommend him
I would take this class again. He's one of the best teachers Ive met at the college so far and I am not kidding. I already signed up for the next class.
I liked how Professor Mumford gave his feedback because I feel like some Professors just want their students to meet their criteria, so they dont really leave comments. Professor Mumford seemed like he really cared about my writings and wanted me to improve them where they needed to be improved. it was like each week I was being guided.
I highly recommend Mr. Mumford. He cares about his students and his lectures are fun. I took English1A with him and throughout the whole fall semester we learned about climate change, and it was very interesting. We had to write essays on climate change too which were honestly easy.
cool dude
It was a pleasure to be in Professor Mumfords class I learned a lot of stuff about Global warming and climate change in this class it was an eye-opener.
I took a two hour long class and he spent a lot of the time discussing the previous and upcoming assignments. None of which were particularly difficult plus he was generally lax about grading, attendance, etc. However there's a LOT of essay assignments and he usually locks bigger assignments after the due date.
A fine gentleman, this class is recommend for pursuers of knowledge.
I had Prof. Mumford for an English online class. He was great at communicating with me when I was sick and couldn't get an assignment in, which was greatly appreciated. He was also responsive to questions about assignments. He also gives chances for extra credit! Highly recommend his online course.
Professor helped me out so much. He was always listens and gave me good advice when I was struggling. He let me tunrn in my work I missed and I ended up passing thanks to him. I hope I can take him again if I can.
Professor Mumford is great in the way he teaches things, lays out assignments, and connects with his students. I liked that the class gave draft assignments ensuring that we would not fall behind on our papers. The instructor was very enthusiastic in his teaching and made class engaging with comments and made writing seem fun.
First college class I took. Great professor, clear with his feedback and expectations. The class wasn't too hard but I learned a lot and got a good grade in the end. I really enjoyed this class and encourage others to take it as well.
Amazing Professor! A majority of his lectures will be based on Global Warming and Environmental topics. If you don't believe in those topics then this class isn't for you. If you want an easy A this class is also not for you but that doesn't mean he grades tough, you just have to write and read and put effort in like any other class.
Prof. Mumford was a great teacher who gave good feedback and always responded to questions in a timely manner. His class has a lot of reading with an essay every 3 weeks or so. The class is not difficult as long as you pay attention to the assignment prompts —they are just time consuming. He explains everything very clearly.
