This is the first semester Dr. Pope taught this class. Some of the readings weren't that great, but Dr. Pope is a good lecturer and I imagine he'll fine tune the content. I'd take it from him.
One word: ****. Ya- he uses his dad's lecture notes and lecture notes that he wrote while he was still in grad school. He got a little better toward the end of the class, but he is still a horrible teacher. DON"T TAKE POPE!
I totally agree with that guy. I think the word he was trying to write was definitely D O U C E
He's new and started off a little rusty, but towards the end he really showed what a great teacher he is. Don't write this class off as a joke. It isn't hard if you stay at it and work hard. Pope is a fun and knowledgeable teacher and I'd definitly take from him again.
I think he is a good teacher. He's pretty funny and knows how to make class interesting.
Nepotism. His daddy wrote the book. Everything he has his dad made. He is the epitome of the condescending professor. He isn't willing to help. His tests are killer. He tries to make them deceptive. Take Am Htg from someone else!
Dr. Pope's class was awesome!!! I learned a ton. It is very difficult, but if you are willing to work you can do well. If you can't do well in this class, you aren't working hard enough.
Prof. Pope was a great lecturer (very entertaining & educating), but the papers and tests made me hate the class. The TAs were unapproachable (one just downright rude) and he tells you straight out that they will be more help than he will. If you put up with them, though, you will do better. Study like crazy for tests and don't put off papers!
This is the only class that I have never had the urge to fall asleep in, and the room has the most comfortable chairs. I laugh more in this class than in all of my other classes combined. My TA was very helpful, but i have not heard anything good about the others. Just seeing Dr. Pope in his hat before class is worth taking Am. Heritage from him!!!
Awesome teacher. Makes the lectures fun. Tests require application of knowlege, but aren't too bad. He's a little large and sweaty, but still a great teacher.
Take anything but American Heritage. Seriously. If you care about learning things and having a good GPA this is not the class for you. Pope is a good lecturer but thats where the good parts of the class end. If you get a bad TA you are screwed, the tests are horrible, seriously, American Heritage is a nightmare.
Dr. Pope is a great guy and really makes class fun and interesting with his movie clips. I had a good TA so I guess I just got lucky. There's not really hw and you just have two papers and two midterms and then a final but I guess the worst part about it is that there is a lil bit of reading every week.
interesting lectures... but unless you have a good TA you're screwed. I had a TA who was always gone and didn't give you any help on test or papers
Lecture is fun and very interesting. Movie clips were great fun, but he doesn't teach you anything. had to teach myself. test are incredibly hard. You have to know EVERYTHING. I studied for hours and got a D+. He also refuses TA reviews and tells the TA's to make the weekly quizes harder and does not allow study guides.
I liked this class. It was fun and interesting. had a good TA that always provided comments on papers. Always made lectures fun and interesting. Tests were ok, study for them. Lot of application of things learned in class, but overall, it was a good class.
This was probably my favorite class this semester. Professor Pope is really interesting and keeps your attention. Even though I had a horrible TA, if you do all the reading and study hard for the tests you should do ok.
People in my class cried. The final is horrible, i know peoplethat studied for hours and read all the notes and chapters and still got scores in the 50's. He does not care about you or how you do. stuff that is on the test was never in any text we were supposed to read. I guess we're just supposed to guess..
Ahh! the beginning of class was interesting, but the more into the semester we got, the more blah it became. I felt like i understood the ideas taught in class, but when it came to the tests, no way jose! Do not get caught by the curse of the curve when someone in your lab aces every test. you'll wind up with a crappy grade even if you work hard
history was my favorite subject until i took his class. he doesn't care about his students and his class is so hard. an A is impossible shoot for A-. his tests are impossible. love the curve embrace the curve.
Aaah!! Run away!! I've never hated college as much as I did in Dr. Pope's class. His lectures are pointless and the tests are impossible, unless you're a mind-reader. PRAY for a good TA--otherwise I can't guarantee your survival. TRANSFER if you can! Take Kimball (or someone else) isntead!
His lectures are fun and interesting. The class is a beast and the tests are EXTREMELY hard. He flat out says the first day of class that the TAs will help you and not him
Lectures by reading the slides he has posted online, so I sometimes wondered why I bothered coming to class. However, really nice guy and very bright.
This class was very interesting. Pope is a huge guy, probably weighs 300. Hes cool tho he shows movie clips in the middle of class that keep it intersting, like war of the worlds and seinfeld. Tests are pretty intense, just pray you get a good TA. The curve is a life saver.
My class was huge, so its hard to say if he was helpful because we just went to TAs for stuff. but his lectures are GREAT! the tests are pretty fair. he's funny, entertaining, and you really learn a ton! I totally recommend him. For AHTG he's the best you'll be able to have (its a challenging class no matter the teacher, but at least he's fun).
Prof. Pope is a funny guy. Everyone thinks the tests are hard, but that is because they don't study. Video clips add to the level of interest in class. Pope is not in charge of individuals (as he has several hundred students) so that is why he scores low on helpfulness, which really is unfair (do you really expect him to know all 1000 students?)
the class was so large, i didn't really have any personal connection to him. class was entertaining but it seems like he was interested in the things that aren't really THAT important and frankly, weren't interesting to me. I enjoyed the txt and the class sometimes. but, the tests really suck. good luck.
He is usually pretty funny and keeps the lectures pretty entertaining. The class itself isn't so bad, but the tests are death. I studied for hours and hours and would still only get C's on the tests because they are much more comlicated than the lectures or the reading.
Dr. Pope is an excellent professor. He does a great job of explaining difficult material so you actually understand what he's talking about. Really intelligent. Be prepared to do a lot of reading.
Pope has an interesting veiw on things, and makes lectures funny. I recommend keeping up with the reading . . . as in read the chapters before the lecture. Not only does this help on his tests, but also makes it easier to enjoy the lecutres. He is a great teacher, and a very knowledgable individual.
Poor! This guy is mostly concerned about letting the class know how smart HE is. He will make continuous reference to the two most important things in his life-Stanford and food. If you want to do well in the class don't worry about doing all of the readings and studying-just make frequent off the wall comments. I got an A- but it's a Poor class.
Pope is funny and makes the material interesting. Take it in the Summer b/c it's not too hard. Get in a good study group + divide up the readings. Take good reading notes and the exam is easy. Class could have been shorter, but overall the class was enjoyable. I think Pope is great b/c he doesn't take himself too seriously.
What can I say that hasnt already been said? Hes funny and I liked his class but the tests are calculated so that people do poorly. A TA told me that was because they had to stay competitive with other schools. If you have to take AM heritage with someone, you want to take it from Jeremy and not his dad, took Econ from him and my soul died a bit.
Pro. Pope is a really good teacher. He's really funny and knows his stuff, but the tests are out of this world. I'm not kidding!! They're so freaking hard! Even if you read the textbook you're probably not going to do great on the tests. But since everyone does poorly on the tests, you'll be kind of ok. Do not procrastinate any of the papers
Really funny, great guy. Shows a lot of movie clips and always has entertaining lectures. Honors American Heritage is a pretty tough class, with a lot of papers to write, difficult tests, and tons of reading. You can get by with just skimming the readings in the packet, but make sure you read the textbook pretty good.
Great teacher! Knows what he's talking about and makes sure his students know too. Readings were a bit long, but quite enjoyable. You will have to do group presentations which are a drab, but he grades easily on them. Class participation is a must. Powerpoints are dull, but his lectures make up for it.
Pope is a good professor. Very intelligent man, knows a lot more than he would reveal in his class. Very respectful and if you meet him halfway he will do the same. Made himself available at his personal office several times. CLEARLY outlines what he expects for grades.
Pope gets his jollies off with his "holier than thou" demonstration of his scholarly knowledge. TA's at best are resigned to the fact that he has constructed this class so you will fail. Don't get me started on tests... On multiple choice he specifically makes 2 or 3 answers apply to the question to "challenge" you. Ridiculous teaching concept.
He is a good teacher. His lectures are very funny and makes the subject very interesting. He helps you to understand what he is teaching, with awesome video clips (that was the best part of the class). Good teacher.
Good teacher, HARD tests
I thought Prof. Pope did a fairly good job at teaching this difficult class. He used a lot of interesting video clips which made class not too boring. True, readings were long and the tests were hard but the curve helps out everybody so keep that in mind. Stay on top of the readings and study the concepts inside and out.
I loved this class. Professor Pope does a good job getting you to think deeply about the concepts rather than making you memorize useless facts. The tests were very difficult, but the curve always helps. Stay caught up on the reading and make sure you understand it. The tests comes sraight from the readings. Overall it was n excellent class.
Pope is a great prof for a tough class. The video clips keep things interesting, and lectures are usually pretty stimulating. The tests can be tough, but if you do the reading you'll be fine. For a required general, Pope's a great prof to have.
Pope makes this topic come to life. I wouldn't recommend taking a lot of notes. I did better on tests than all my friends who just wrote non stop during class. Just absorb his wisdom and read the entire textbook. He's a tricky test writer. Learn to think like pope and you'll do fine.
This class is hard for any professor to teach, and I don't think anyone can learn the subject in a classroom. It needs to be practiced and practiced. That said, I think Pope did a good job explaining the subject and he was made himself available for questions as much as possible. The workload is intense, but Pope's humor puts everyone at ease.
Pope was actually really funny and kept me interested in a class that I had no interest in. He uses lots of video clips and jokes to help you understand. I hated the class but I didn't hate Pope.
Class is interesting but tests are very difficult. Pope is does good lectures, he keeps you interested, its just the tests that are awful
Pope is a really funny guy, and lecture is definitely entertaining, especially when he asks for feedback. Really interesting class. I hated history classes before this, but now I like them. Don't slack off, though. And there are really short quizzes every lab.
Pope is a good dude, but he forgets a few things, such as: Ahtg 100 is a ONE HUNDRED LEVEL COURSE!! Not a graduate course!! Also, not all people in Ahtg are political science majors and the class is WAY more heavily weighted towards that than actual history. the course packet is whack. Take it if you MUST.
Pope, while a jolly fellow, write the most difficult, evil tests I have ever taken. He's funny enough during lectures and keeps the material interesting, but the exams are based on application, not memorization of terms or subjects. Very difficult class considering it's a 100 class, and a mandatory GE. I was left with a bad taste in the mouth. Grr.
I have heard all the rumors about AHTG 100 and how it was impossible, but I actually did not think this class was that bad. Pope kept lectures interesting enough and the information was not too difficult to grasp. Exams were hard, but not impossible. To sum up, Pope was a good professor and American Heritage was just a time consuming class.
This was by far my favorite class this past semester. Pope had amazing lectures and always has at least one video clip in there. I have always hated american history but his class was more about understanding the concepts this country is built on rather than just memorizing a million dates and people.
LOVED this class. Everyone dreads it, and many people still hate it in the end, but I thought it was awesome. Prof. Pope is a great lecturer. Funny, clear, and always has movie clips that are fun and relatable. This class got me excited about government and economy were I'd had zero interest before. Just go to lectures, LISTEN, and study hard!
I do not understand why there are so many complaints about Ahtg. I thought the class was fun and inspiring. I also felt it was meant for freshman. The tests were slightly difficult before the curve, but the TA's were more than helpful. Pope was awesome! No other way to describe him. Just focus on concepts and listen to the TAs. I recommend the clas
Everyone said the class was going to be really tough and boring but Pope is a really funny guy and made it really interesting. It is not an easy class. It seems easy because he explains it well and then when you don't study the tests slap you in the face. Once you realize that you do have to do the readings and actually study it isnt that bad
This was a really good class. Pope did a good job at making the material interesting and funny so that I could pay attention to all the things he was teaching. He tells you from the get go that just because he makes it fun doesn't mean it's not tough. With careful studying and note taking it is not hard to pull off an A especially with a curve.
Professor Pope is a fun teacher. His classes are interesting and funny. If you go and talk to him he'll do whatever to help you. But this class is hard. The tests are hard. Make sure you study a lot and go to the review sessions. Don't expect an A. Be happy to just pass.
Prof. Pope is a funny and very knowledgable person, but I got the impression that he didn't care much about the individual students--he left that care up to the TAs. The class is very tough: lots of readings and ridiculous tests. Read thoroughly, study in groups and by yourself, go to the review room, do and know EVERYTHING. An A is very possible.
Pope is awesome. He is very smart and is a great teacher, but he also has a great sense of humor. This class is hard work, but it's not impossible if you set aside time for it. Pope makes the material interesting and he's just awesome.
Pope is one of the best teachers i've had at BYU. He made a class that is insanely hard fun and bearable. Great guy and was very helpful.
Dr. Pope is a funny guy and provides good video clips to explain his point and illustrate the chapter principles. The tests are really hard but don't worry, the curve is huge! There is lots of reading and weekly quizzes. I think it doesn't matter who you take this class from, it's a challenge.
Pope is a great professor. He is funny, helpful, and quite reasonable in his grading policies. 328 is a difficult, 4-credit course, but it is one of the most practical and useful I've ever taken.
This is a hard class, and everyone knows that going in. I heard a ton of complaining during the class, but it was mostly about the work load. Dr. Pope helped me understand concepts more clearly, and took some time to discuss my post-graduation options. I'd recommend him, especially for 328--this is a tough class to teach and he did really well.
This class changed my life. I LOVED going to class and studying the textbook. I didn't have very much interest in history before but this class made me realize how it applies now, and what we can learn from the past. It was inspiring. Dr. Pope did an awesome job teaching this class. It isn't too difficult if you put in a little time.
This class is horrible, but Prof. Pope is great. He really wanted to help and when you go to his office hours he tries to figure out what would be best for you to succeed. It doesnt matter what professor you have a htg is hard no matter what.
328 is difficult, but I highly recommend taking the class from Dr. Pope.
I've had two classes with Professor Pope now and wish I could find more classes he teaches that I could take. Great Professor that makes the difficult stuff enjoyable. Highly recommend taking PLSC 328 from him.
Professor Pope is really funny and really good-natured. Although this class is inherently boring, he made attending it really enjoyable and interesting. The tests are really hard, but there is always a generous curve. However, it is really hard to get an A. If you must take this class, take it from Pope!
He was an exceptional AHtg. professor! I had heard horror stories about AHtg, and I was dreading it, I thought it would be an impossible class, but I enjoyed it! I loved all the videos and clips, and the object lessons. He is great at giving lectures, and keeps the class awake with humor, or with just having emotion in his voice, no monotone.
I absolutely LOVED this class! Dr. Pope keep the lectures interesting and fun. I enjoyed every single one. I also enjoyed the reading out of the textbooks and etc. there was quite a bit! Every week, a lab, really makes or breaks the class. Lucky I had a good TA! This is one of the tougher classes that you actually have to work to get an A for.
One of the harder classes that you had to actually work for!
This class is really hard no matter who you take it from. But Professor Pope is a good teacher for it. He keeps lectures interesting, but his tests are extremely hard. There is a huge curve so getting an A is possible if you study the book and readings hard and attend reviews. There's weekly quizzes in labs so do the reading every week beforehand.
Pope is an okay professor for this class. He isn't really willing to go back and explain anything or answer questions. His tests are ridiculously hard, but the curve will save you. I would probably take from someone else if you can.
Pope is a great professor. He does his best to teach course concepts and make things interesting. There's A LOT of work required for this class (tons of readings, textbook use, & essays). I got behind and basically didn't read anything, but attended lectures, labs, and reviews, and still averaged 77% on the exams before the gracious curve.
took 310 from him. there will be a lot, i mean a lot of reading. but that being said he does a good job at making his exams fairly class oriented. read what you can, participate, and go to class. he is very willing to work with students. i would take more classes from him. he is a good professor. this class was enjoayable.
i loved professor pope!!! he was so passionate about what he was teaching which made me more excited about the subject too. this class is definitely challenging but doable if you put in the work! read and you will be golden!
American Heritage is a hard class but Dr. Pope's lectures are really interesting and he's really passionate about what he's teaching. He's also really funny and uses good stories and clips to make his point. Always do the reading and attend lectures.
American Heritage is something you either love or hate. Either way, Pope is a great professor. You have to do the reading assignments and put in effort. If you don't then studying for the tests will be a nightmare. Get to know your TA well and study a little every day.
Professor Pope gives interesting lectures, and if you take notes and do the readings the class is pretty easy. Being assigned a good TA that presents the material well and gives clear explanations in lab is a huge advantage. Tough grading criteria, and some test and quiz questions are poorly written so you'll have to have your wits about you:)
Tough class but essential to graduating so...
I went into this class thinking I would hate it because I hate history, but professor Pope made it really interesting and it ended up being one of my favorite classes this semester. Attendance isn't required for lecture, but I would recommend going and taking good notes. Also he plays videos every class which made it more entertaining.
At first it seems easy, just read take notes, go to your lab. Then BAM! Those tests put you in your place. It's hard to predict what to study for. Go to the review room and they'll kind of help you, but you pretty much have to know and memorize a lot of specifics. Good luck. Study in groups and take the time to study.
Lectures are fun and well constructed. There is quite a bit of reading so you really have to stay on top of things if you want to pass. And the tests are short, but they are fairly difficult, so study. Also, you always have to attend the lab because there is a quiz every week which adds up to 25% of your grade.
The questions on this test are unpredictable. Lots of multiple choice questions asking for the "most correct" answer. I love american history and I couldn't stand this class.
Pope was a good professor, but this isn't like just a regular historygovernment class he is going to teach you concepts and expects you to understand them enough to apply them to different situations. Get ready to read. The only way to good in this class is to do the ready. But Pope's lectures are really interesting and easy to follow.
Lectures are really cool. He uses lots of movie clips as examples and to make the lecture more interesting. This course helped me look at the American founding in a whole new way. It was interesting and fairly easy. As long as you show up to lecture, lab, and read the textbook and outside readings you will be fine.
I thought I would hate this class because I've never really enjoyed history but Professor Pope made his lectures interesting. I learned a lot from Professor Pope and I really enjoyed going to his lectures. Do the readings!!! Take advantage of the review room, the TA's are there to help. Get to know your own TA as well. If you study, you'll pass!
Professor Pope is a wonderful teacher who both knows and loves the material. He does an excellent job of keeping students' attention by interspersing his lectures with humor; furthermore, I felt like he honestly cared about me as an individual even among a class of 500. His tests, however, are tough and he requires a lot of reading and studying.
I really liked Pope's lectures but that was about it. His TA's graded super hard. I went to the review room everyday, did every reading assignment, and always had my essays looked over and I still got a C. Good luck.
He was a good professor overall. His tests were a nightmare! You really have to KNOW the material and be able to apply it. Do ALL of the reading; there was a ton, but to do well on the tests it is worth it. There is a quiz in every lab that can make or break or grade! He doesn't post his slides so lecture attendance is a must to get the notes!
The lectures and readings are actually fairly interesting, but the rest of the class is horrible. I did really well on the tests, but they were hard and trying to trick you on every question. The TAs grade really hard and are not much help. Do well on the daily quizzes and keep up on reading and hope that you are good at guessing what Pope wants.
This is historically a tough class at BYU, so you can't expect it to be a walk in the park. Pope's lectures were very entertaining and he made a boring subject pretty entertaining. The tests are difficult, but there are tons of resources to help you. Be sure to read EVERYTHING. It's tough, but you can pass with a lot of effort.
I honestly had no idea where I stood grade wise in this class until I got my final grade. Lecture was important. Some of the material on the test was only covered in lecture. I Never found a good way to take notes for this class, and he sped through powerpoints. This class requires a ton of reading. If you want a good grade be ready to put in time!
American Heritage is tough, but Professor Pope's enthusiasm really makes the class easier. There are ALOT of readings, but most are pretty interesting (if you like history). There are also TA reviews almost every day of the week, and they VERY helpful. Pope does a great job of bringing history to life, and I always left lectures feeling inspired.
TAKE THIS CLASS FROM PROF. POPE. It completely changed how I think about America and myself as an American citizen. His lectures are honest looks at the Founding and are fascinating and inspiring. Not hard to get an A, just go to class, do homework (especially readings) and study for the midterm & final. Great guy teaching a great class
Oh American Heritage. Pope was actually a fantastic professor and really cared about the subject and showed his passion through his teaching. He was entertaining, but the tests were pretty hard. Make sure you study for the final like crazy. In fact for all the tests, study hard. You'll most likely pass, but you have to work for a good grade.
Professor Pope is incredibly smart. But I wouldn't recommend taking this class if you aren't majoring in Poli Sci - I am interested in Politics, but not in a deep way and I felt lost in some of the lingo and the lectures were hard for me to follow without a lot of effort. He gives great feedback, but he is a tough grader. Don't expect an easy A.
The class was fine but Prof. Pope really isn't much of a teacher. He is a good lecturer and can talk about Poli Sci for days but you don't really learn anything from him. He just kind of talks the whole hour.
Pope is a great professor who really knows his stuff and does a great job of communicating it clearly. Attendance is not optional and you need to take good notes to succeed. That being said, I would not take this course to fill a GE if you are not in the major. 130+ pages of reading per week that are super jargony with random in class quizzes.
His lectures are interesting but they don't help you at all for the exams. The exams are extremely hard and confusing. The exams are extremely application based. I would not take this professor for American Heritage.
Pope is a great guy and really knows his stuff. He gets a lot of unnecessary trash talk to his name just because American Heritage is a really really hard class. The class itself is worse than rubbing jalapeños on your eyeballs but Pope makes it a little less terrible. The TAs are where it gets icky. Your TA could make or break your experience.
Ridiculously difficult!! Tests are pretty much impossible! Expect to read a ton every night. He likes to use mini clips in lectures which is nice, but overall a bit dry of a lecture. Overall, prepare to spend ALL of your time working for this class.
When it comes to american heritage at byu, you dont really have many options . Expect tons of reading, weekly quizzes (sometimes pop quizzes too), and midterms that are challenging. but other than that, pope isnt that bad, he's a huge Marvel and StarWars nerd actually...
The tests are really hard and the largest amount of homework is usually assigned the week before and the week of the tests making it harder to study. I would advise taking ANY OTHER teacher for American Heritage before taking the class from him. He may give good lectures, but that doesn't really make up for the excessive difficulty of his tests.
Take American Heritage from any other possible teacher. He makes his class seem so easy until you take his tests. I thought I was given the wrong test when I took his first midterm, but nope it was his. The averages for the tests are in the 60's. Take it from any other possible teacher if you want to save your GPA.
Prof Pope is an absolutely amazing professor! He is intelligent and passionate about the American Founding and his excitement excites you. There is a lot of reading and he is known as the harder American Heritage professor, but he is such a good teacher that it hardly matters. I would much rather be challenged by him than handed an A.
I haven't finished the class yet. I just took midterm 2. I got an 86 on the first exam and a 93 on the second one. The thing is, the material is SUPER EASY to understand, but Jeremy can't give everyone an A, so he has to find ways to make questions tricky and add red herrings. Also, the TAs aren't allowed to tell you the essay criteria- STUPID.
I am not a fan of Pope. He teaches all based off his opinions and not actual facts, so I don't even know if I'm learning the right things. He is extremely arrogant. You think you know the material, but he wants you to fail so the tests are impossible. All the questions are made up scenarios from his head that are of no benefit. This class is dumb.
American Heritage in general is a ton of busy work, but Prof Pope is passionate and funny!!! 25% of his tests are from class, 25% from books, and 50% covered in both, so you really need to be fully participating. Also look up TAs and make sure you get a good one. They are the ones who grade your papers and are in charge of your grade.
Professor Pope's lectures are great, very interesting if you like history and politics, but there's a ton of outside reading to do and the tests are really hard. All in all he's a good professor, but this is a tough class. If you put in the work you'll do good. if not, this class will live up to all the horror stories you've probably heard.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS YOU WILL FAIL. The lectures do not at all help you with the tests. The tests are full of trick questions and they are worth A LOT of your grade. Also the lectures are low key really boring.
American Heritage sucks, but I recommend taking it from Brother Pope. He knows what he's talking about, and has a lot of great clips he shows in class to help explain tough topics. The tests are hard, but if you have a good understanding of the readings and lectures, you'll do fine.
I love history and already knew a lot and I still hated this class. Lectures are boring. There's lots of reading every week. Quizzes are weekly and there are often pop quizzes in lab. TAs determine your grade for the most part. 2 midterms and a final that'll have you stressed. I felt like many questions were very specific just to see if you read.
Dr. Popes lectures are pretty enjoyable. LOTS of reading. The textbook is the most important, but there are weekly online quizzes and pop quizzes in lab about the additional reading assignments. You can get by without doing it all.
American Heritage is going to be hard, no matter the teacher. Professor Pope is funny, super smart, and relatively cool. Actual material is interesting and relatively simple, but as in any American Heritage class, there is TONS of reading. Your grade is mostly determined by your TA, but an A is definitely achievable and grades/tests are all curved
Dr. Pope is great! He does have you do a lot of readings, so be aware of that. As long as you are on top of your homework and go to class and lab, you'll do well. It will take a lot of studying to get an A.
Lectures were great and funny, but they don't translate to the tests at all. If you don't read the daily reading from the course reserve, you won't pass. If you can, take from another professor.
Dr. Pope is a great professor. He cares a lot about the students and gives you tons of info to succeed if you actually use them, like a comprehensive syllabus and questions for the readings that help you know what to look for so you don't have to actually the entire article for most of the course reserve. Just don't get behind on the readings.
This class was very difficult. You need to make sure you do the readings and go to lecture in order to do well on the test. But Professor Pope does an amazing job of teaching the material.
Professor Pope is respectful, inspirational, and fair. This is a difficult course, as are most courses at BYU; welcome to university. You need neither be a history major nor a political scientist to get a decent grade in Prof Pope's class. Read the syllabus, do your readings, write more than rough drafts, study hard, and you'll do great!
Pope was an amazing professor; objective, clear, and fair. On tests: yes they are hard, but there is a generous curve at the end of class. Yes they are based heavily on both lectures AND reading, but this is college. Of course you need to read. On TAs: your grade is curved by TA. Even if you get a bad one, it won't make too much of a difference.
Not an easy class. There is quite a bit of reading for every day (and I honestly just read summaries of the really long ones). Pope was a good prof, and honestly your TA will be the one who will answer most of your questions, grade papers, etc. Be sure to use all the resources offered (syllabus, ppts, etc) b/c they're great review for the exams.
American heritage is a tough class. There is really no way to be successful in this class unless your willing to put in the work. That being said, Professor pope is a great teacher, his lectures are engaging, and he is passionate about what he teaches. If your willing to work hard, you will do really well.
Professor Pope is a great lecturer. His lectures are entertaining, uplifting, and instructive. Getting an 'A' requires a lot of work, but doing the readings and reviewing the lectures makes it definitely possible. I hated the class at first, but it ended up being one of my favorite classes I've taken at BYU.
This class is rough. The professor is a good teacher, his lectures are pretty entertaining, and he's a funny dude, but the class itself is unnecessarily difficult. The tests were what killed me. I did great on everything else, nearly 100% on every assignment, but the tests are crazy. If you want an A, American Heritage will be your life.
The course is incredibly organized--the syllabus is a thing of beauty. I struggled most of the semester, especially with the first midterm and the three TA graded essays, but then I studied the entire book+syllabus and got a 97% on the final. The final exam grade raises any lower midterm score to the grade of the final so I jumped from a B to an A.
Professor Pope is a really good professor. He does a lot to help his students. However, there is a lot of reading, sometimes 60 or 70 page reading assignments for a night. Make sure you take this class when you aren't super busy with other tough classes.
I would not take this class from Pope. He's fun. He's a good lecturer. However, he is very concerned about having a good grade distribution. Things to know: -His tests are application heavy, so be prepared to get inside his head. -Definitely read the textbook, but skip the supplemental reading (just look for summaries).
I really like Professor Pope as a teacher and a person. I'll definitely be looking for his name as I sign up for other political science classes. There's a lot to memorize but he also really makes sure the course changes the way you think.
This class was the hardest class I have taken so far at BYU. However, I loved the course and it became my favorite class. Prof. Pope is a very intelligent professor. The American Heritage Review Lab in the HBLL should become your best friend. I didn't go there or utilize the help of my TA until the second midterm. This course if possible!
Dr. Pope is a great lecturer and he knows his stuff. I really enjoyed his lectures and he is a fair grader. He's always willing to help, and even though American Heritage is a difficult class, he made it really interesting and fun!
Professor Pope is kinda funny, but mostly confusing. I never knew what to expect on the tests, to get a good grade you really need to go to every lab and read the textbook religiously. His lectures hardly apply to the tests, which are application oriented. I went to almost every lab, studied for hours, and still struggled. 0/10 would not recommend
I loved American Heritage from Professor Pope! The class isn't as difficult as many make it out to be. The tests were very application heavy, so it did feel at times as if I had to read Pope's mind but they were very doable if you stayed on top of the readings and payed attention to lecture. Amazing class that gets you to appreciate America!
Oh, infamous American Heritage... You have to work in this class if you want to succeed, and ESPECIALLY if you want an A. There is lots of reading and quizzes, but Pope is a wonderful man that cares about his students learning principles for LIFE and not just for class. I LOVED this approach to Am. history. Pope is THE professor to take.
Professor Pope is a very knowledgeable professor who communicates the material effectively and in an interesting way (i.e. Star Wars references, video clips). The class does require significant reading, but the material in and of its self is not that difficult; there's just a ton of it.
The hardest class Ive ever taken, but possible. Professor Pope instilled second chance testing during my semester which saved me by the end of the year. You will have to work for your grade. Test answers are based on the MOST right answer so it can be tricky and frustrating.
If you are not good at history, especially if you did not do well in AP US History in high school DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Professor Pope is a hilarious professor, but he makes the class really hard. Sadly, I got TA help and went to the lab a lot but it did not reflect to my final grade. The tests are very conceptual based. Take it online or at SLC.
The class is hard. Lectures themselves really aren't terrible however, just keep up on your reading. There is a lot of it. I personally thought labs were not helpful, but there were 5 pop quizzes in lab throughout the semester so you had to go. The tests are really hard, but they're doable if you put in the effort. Second chance testing saved me.
Dr. Pope's lectures are great. He is very funny and entertaining. His tests are super tough, though. Info is taken from lab, lecture, or text. He makes you turn in 3 papers, which are graded by the TA's. Make sure to talk to your TA about your paper beforehand! You won't get a good grade on them if you don't. ATTEND THE REVIEW SESSIONS.
Dr. Pope might be one of the best professors at BYU objectively. You will want to go to his lectures even though they are not mandatory attendance. However, American Heritage is difficult for those who haven't taken US history. Even then, the class is difficult. Exams are a VERY large part of your grade and you will have TONS of reading. Have fun!
Prof Pope gives entertaining and insightful lectures. American Heritage, though, is one of the hardest classes I've taken. Tests are weighted very heavily, and the questions on them are objective. If you can figure out how to do well on the tests and keep on top of all the other assigned work, then you should be good.
This class is not hard. It has a reputation because the exams are not simply flash card based but they require you to think. Attend class and take good notes. Professor Pope makes things interesting; class feels more like a presentation than a lecture. It is fairly easy to get an A if you learn to analyze (not simply regurgitate.)
Professor Pope's lectures are extremely interesting. He's good at arguing both sides and admitting there is not one clear solution to most political problems. He challenges his students, but the work is worth it. You'll obtain a new perspective and think in new ways. His class is HARD, but I would take it again in a heartbeat.
This was the worst class I've ever taken and was also where I received the lowest grade I've ever had in my life. I know history well but Pope's tests are solely his opinion of historical events not what you would find in a textbook. There's almost never any answer choices that are 100% correct so the average test score was around 50%. Good luck.
Professor Pope is very entertaining and the class itself isn't very difficult as long as you pay attention. I didn't personally use the textbook, but it would probably be helpful. Tests are a little tricky but manageable
Tests full of tricky questions, lots of reading, decent material.
I was terrified going into this class because of all the horror stories and, honestly, 100% untrue. Though I never have enjoyed the subject, I never dread lecture. Pope knows exactly how to keep you informed and engaged. If you stay on top of the reading and listen in lecture, tests are a breeze.
Prof. Pope is AWESOME! American Heritage is a tough class but he makes it very enjoyable. Make sure you go to class, your TA section, and labs. Your TAs are vital to helping you succeed! There are weekly quizzes and 4 essays over the course of the semester, but they are very short and easily doable. Be prepared to laugh and learn a lot in lecture.
Great guy, very hard class. Do the readings otherwise, good luck lol. Super funny professor.
I loved Professors Pope's lectures, they were hilarious, but I also learned a lot. The only caveat to this class is the reading. There's a lot and it's on the test, so don't skip it. The reading room is super helpful. I felt like I learned a lot and enjoyed it too. There's not a ton of papers to right, but the ones you do write are simple.
Pope is a funny and nice guy. But for a level 100 class there is too much reading, too many assignments, and his tests are very in depth. Currently taking a level 300 Organic chemistry and his class is harder than that. I personally believe he needs to change his course curriculum to be more fit for his students. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS FROM POPE!
Professor Pope is a nice man and his lectures are interesting. However, he is unclear about what is important for the tests. He will emphasize certain points in lecture and readings and then test heavily on topics that were hardly mentioned. He does do second chance testing so study for the final. I would take this class from a different professor.
Pope tests heavy on material not focused on in his class lectures or readings. He may be funny, but he does not make it clear what you need to know in order to be successful in his class. Take this class online or from a different professor.
Currently enrolled in his class, he is assignment heavy. For example, tonight's readings include 51 pages and a quiz. He tests in such a way that you have to know all of this material, no study guides provided. He also took the time to announce in his lecture today that his midterm average score for 2300 students is 69.3%. Take this class online.
This is the hardest class I've ever taken. The lecture and readings are very interesting and entertaining. The quizzes are not hard, the papers require effort, the pop quizzes are easy but BEWARE the exams. The exams will break you faster than Ivan Drago broke Apollo Creed's face. Study hard, go to the review room and get to know your TA.
Professor Pope was funny to begin with. His lectures were entertaining. However, he kinda stopped being funny about halfway through the semester. American Heritage is an awful class. Very test heavy (and the tests are tricky). You have to write 3 or 4 2-page papers that are only worth 10 points and then a 4-page paper at the end.
Dr. Pope is a terrific person and a knowledgeable instructor. Beware this class has several papers, challenging quizzes, predictable pop quizzes, and difficult tests but that's just the nature of the curriculum. Lectures are entertaining with frequent video clips, comical demonstrations, and survey style participation. Not easy, but worth it.
Hilarious in and outside of the classroom. Enjoys battering with students during the lectures, but never lets it get too out of hand. Beware of midterms: if you don't read the assignments or if you skipped class, you will see that reflected in your grade. Overall, amazing professor and a great person.
Made me develop a new appreciation for the subject. Hes hilarious and gives great lectures but assigns crazy amounts of reading. If you dont do the readings, go to reviews, and study for hours each day you wont pass, much less get an A.
Prof. Pope is a great guy, but this class is so hard. He has great lectures and he is funny. There is just so much content it is so consuming and hard to know where to start studying. There is a ridiculous amount of reading, papers, and pop quizes and no study guide.
I loved every second of this class! There is a lot of reading, but it is doable, this is college. Although he doesn't provide a study guide the tests are manageable if you follow the syllabus. He has clear grading criteria and is very organized. Get to know your TA and GO TO THE REVIEW ROOM OFTEN! I go at least twice a week and it has helped a lot!
Dr Pope is decent. It mainly matters what TA you get for his lab. He makes lecture fun, just make sure you prepare for the tests and do the readings!!! AHTG sucks but he makes it better
Lectures are very interesting and he does a good job with broad topics. There are a few simple papers, one 4 page paper at the end of the semester, an online quiz every week, and 5 pop quizzes in lab throughout the semester. Tests are very difficult and can be extremely specific, no study guide provided, so it can be difficult to study for
Prof Pope is probably the easiest American Heritage teacher you could choose. Not as much reading as the other teachers give and while there are some hard assignments, it's totally possible to do well if you put some effort in. A lot of readings, but you can probably get by by skimming them. Curve at the end of the course too
Pope is a nice and funny guy. His lectures are entertaining, but not very helpful. He assigns many long and difficult readings each night. His tests are extremely hard! It's comprehensive with tough scenarios, the answers. are similar. He provides no study guide and does a Q/A review so you don't actually know what you should know for the test.
American Heritage was my favorite class even though it was my most difficult class. Pope's lectures are amazing and super interesting.. I cannot explain how much I look forward to lecture It is a lot of work but it is possible as you do all the assignments and take advantage of the TAs. American Heritage with Pope is the best! Take it from him!!
Pope is super great! His lectures are always super engaging, interesting, and reference pop culture which makes things easier to remember. There is a ton (ton) of reading to do which is needed to do on well on quizzes and tests. His tests are literally so hard. You need to know your stuff, and go to lectures because what he says is important!!
Listen. American Heritage is going to be difficult no matter who you take it from. So take it from Dr. Pope! His lectures are so entertaining and the class is anything but boring!
Pope is a good professor and if you are good at this subject, then you will do well. 60 percent of grade is tests so if you don't do well then good luck... the tests can be very hard! There are five pop quizzes worth more than all the minor essays, and a LOT of reading! Good professor, but very difficult assignments.
Regardless of what teacher you have American Heritage is a difficult class with a lot of reading and challenging tests. Professor Pope was a great choice. He knows his stuff very well and explains things clearly so you can understand the concept. As long as you put forth a good effort and get help from him you will do just fine.
Pope piles on an excessive amount of readings. Far more than your average 3 credit class and to the point where it seems the course's main objective is to be overwhelming instead of informative. He does NOT make it clear what you should be learning, and offers no guidance as to how or what you should study for his lengthy and comprehensive tests.
Taking this class from Professor Pope was great. If you are looking to take this class I would recommend taking it from him. There is a stereotype that this class is the worst, but that is just because it is a freshman level class with a lot of new students. As long as you put effort into this class you will be fine. There are a lot of readings!
Professor Pope is a good guy but this is legit the hardest class Ive ever taken. Theres so much reading its unbelievable. Theres only 3 tests the whole semester and a couple of papers. If youre really confident go for it, but if youre not great with government and history please choose something else.
AHTG is a nightmare but Professor Pope made it slightly more bearable. he's a very funny and interesting character who gave me a new appreciation for the US. make sure you score a good TA, they can make or break the course for you. go to the review room, do the readings, attend lecture, study hard and you can score an A. good luck.
I loved this class. Definitely super hard, but all American Heritage classes are hard. Lectures are engaging, and Professor Pope is a great teacher. He brings up a lot of good points and really makes you think about the topics. Make sure you do ALL the readings and go to EVERY class or you have no chance in the class.
Really grateful I chose to take american heritage from Pope. He is a very smart man and has thought a lot about the content he presents and makes you read. The reading is difficult to keep up with and hard to know what you're supposed to get out of it. Super helpful if you get a good TA in the class. Take advantage of the review room at all costs!
Dr. Pope gives the most amazing lectures and his class is so interesting!! I loved his American Heritage lectures. That being said, his tests are really hard and ask for a lot of obscure information. Pay attention in class, take good notes, go to the TA labs, and study hard youll do well. Its a hard class, but its so interesting and important.
His tests were very hard
Fantastic lectures. I loved this class despite all the hate it gets. He really gets you thinking. The only thing that sucks is you have quite a few papers to write and the tests are kind of a pain. You won't fail, but you likely won't get an A
Lots of boring readings. The tests are very hard and do not make much sense. He does not give a study guide so you have to study everything, and even then the tests are confusing. Pop quizzes in the labs.
For a required class, he does a decent job. The lectures are fun, but make sure to study the book a ton too. There are a lot of outside readings, so buckle up.
This isn't the easiest class, but he does a good job with teaching it. The tests are pretty difficult though; however, the final grade can replace your midterms which is so helpful! He is a funny good and good teacher, and the subject material is interesting, but the tests are normally very sneaky with their questions being VERY specific.
Great professor! The class isn't honestly as tough as people make it out to be. His lectures are brilliant, he wants you to challenge your preconceived notions about America and politics and look at them through an analytical lens. If you go to class and do ALL the readings and quizzes, and A is achievable--but not easy. Go to TA reviews!
Professor Pope is incredible. His class is hard and he will make you work for an A but if you're willing to put in the effort its quite possible. Highly recommend attending the review sessions in the library as often as possible. Lots of reading which appears in quiz and test questions. Would highly recommend
A good guy, a hard professor.
This is a hard class mainly because of Dr. Pope's incredibly hard tests. There's also a lot of readings and quizzes.
I really liked Professor Pope. He's tough, but the subject matter lends itself to this type of rigor. This class was an intro to law class. It was enriching and thought-provoking, and he cares a lot about his students. It was worth the time/effort. Form a group to discuss readings/exams, stay up on your short papers, and presentation.
Lots of readings. If you want to get an A, you need to know the material inside and out. Very test heavy, so study way hard. Study groups and TA sessions can be helpful, but you need to know a lot to get the A. Get ready to work hard.
Professor Pope has great lectures and makes American History fun, but his tests are too difficult. The answers are all very misleading. He also assigns WAY too much reading to do. We generally have reading assignments that will be 20 pages long just for a two sentence concept. However, he is very merciful with chances to save your grade.
He is such a cool and funny dude, class is never boring. The reading is too much however and the tests are very difficult, often asking for answers that come only from one specific reading. The papers weren't bad, most less than 2 pages. Review sessions are useful, and pop quizzes on readings in labs, but if you have a good TA you should do well.
The class is known to be hard but Prof. Pope did a great job of teaching it with the rules he had to follow for the curriculum. A lot of readings that you have to know completely inside and out if you want to receive a good grade. The tests are very hard, but GO to the review room. Pope was overall a very good professor for this.
Pope is a great guy and I thoroughly enjoyed his sense of humor. However the class is so large that you cant have a personal relationship and you have to submit every assignment through a TA. This was one of the hardest classes I've ever taken. There is SO MUCH INFORMATION. Good luck to anyone who still has to take this, I almost cried in the final
Professor Pope is a nice guy with entertaining lectures. He assigns tons of long and boring readings each night, but you have to really know them to pass the tests. His tests are difficult scenarios & the answers are confusing and similar. In lab, there are pop quizzes and TAs are tough graders. However, he gives a nice curve at the end of semester
Yes, it is difficult material. But Prof. Pope teaches it in a thorough, fun way. Despite some of the reviews on this guy, I recommend taking this class. I learned a lot, and as long as you study well, the tests are fine. You will probably do bad on the midterms, but keep in mind that your final grade will probably be curbed up at least 5%.
Professor Pope's clarity of instruction and expectations makes it possible to pass this notoriously difficult class. Pope gives the students all the resources they need to succeed-- review sessions, clear criterion, and amazing TA's. If you READ EVERYTHING, seek help for what you don't understand, and go to reviews when needed, you can succeed.
Not my favorite class by far. I don't like history and have a hard time retaining things. SO. MUCH. READING. And so much memorization of dates and people and events. I hated the lab so much. TA was such a harsh grader, even when I'd go in with my paper to have them review it many times.
If you're not great at remembering tiny details from 80 pages of reading, you're gonna struggle through his class. Tests are much harder than should be for a GE. Go to your lab, it's the only thing that helped me pass. Pope is nice and funny but this class is too hard.
Dr. Pope is a great lecturer who knows his stuff. MAKE SURE YOU DO THE READINGS. If you don't, you will not do well. He gives second-chance testing opportunities which is really nice, so if you do bad on the first test, make sure you do well on the final. Average grade is a C, so if you want to do better, you really have to work for it.
Professor Pope is very smart and his lectures are very entertaining and informative. I learned a lot in this class and really enjoyed it. American Heritage is hard but there are a lot of resources to help you through it and if you really do the work then you should do fine. Professor Pope is probably one of the easier professors for this course.
Dr. Pope gave very good lectures that were both entertaining and informative. His tests were rather difficult but he curves the final grade and if you do well on the final it can replace your other scores. If you listen to what he emphasizes in class and go to the TA reviews then the tests aren't that bad. There is a lot of assigned reading.
American Heritage is hated by a lot of BYU students, but I honestly loved it. Pope is a solid option, he gives clear lectures and keeps them entertaining. The real way to do well in the class is to rely on your TA. Professor Pope trains them well and gives them a lot of power so make your TA your best friend.
I LOVE Professor Pope. He is super easy-going, and you learn SO much from the lectures. There is a TON of reading, though. In POLI210 we were able to take as many notes as we wanted into the testing center, which was super nice because in the real world you're allowed to have notes (although in his other classes this isn't the case).
I liked Dr. Pope, but he is not everybody's cup of tea. He has enjoyable lectures with clips and jokes, but this course is certainly a lot of work. Lots of essays, exams, quizzes, and readings. But if you have to take American Heritage I would recommend Dr. Pope.
Overall, Prof. Pope is a good professor; he knows what he's talking about & gives wonderful, compelling lectures. While I think the subject matter itself is vital, the class moves at a breakneck speed, and you cannot afford to get behind. Prof Pope piles it on. Buckle up, get ready to work, do the reading, and go to all the classes and labs
Professor Pope was really funny and I liked his lectures. Get ready for a lot of reading homework if you take his class. American Heritage is hard in general, but know if you study you will be fine. USE THE TA REVIEW ROOMS!!! No matter what professor you take you can pass if you use the AHTG reviews!
take american heritage from him!!! hes funny and teaches well. it is going to be tough but as long as you go to class, do the readings, and go to the review room, youll be fine.
I absolutely dreaded taking this class. However, Dr. Pope and my TA made it very enjoyable. There is TONS of reading that is essential you do. His quizzes are based solely on the reading and his test have questions from the readings as well. The TA review rooms are amazing and will definitely help you be successful. Overall, a great class.
Dr. Pope seems scary but is super kind! He is well informed and gives incredible lectures that require you to think deeply about the world around you. It is daunting at first, but this class is completely doable if you do the readings, go to the TA lab often, and attend lab every week. American Heritage has a bad rap, but give it a chance!
You need to do ALL of the reading. Quizzes are 100% reading, tests are 1/2 reading but the questions are VERY specific. Pop quizzes about every other week. Thought class was simple until the 2nd midterm, class average was 63. Study hard and read EVERYTHING. TA can be helpful if you get a good one. TA lab is very helpful for reading reviews.
Although this class is hard(no getting around that) I really enjoyed what Professor Pope brought to the table. He knows his stuff, backwards and forwards, he always plays devils advocate so there is no partisan bias in teaching, and he's engaging making the lectures quite enjoyable. He may not be for everyone but he is definitely my cup of tea.
I really wanted to like this class, but alas. The lectures were funny and made a lot of sense. The readings are long and can sometimes be tedious. But the worst part was the exams. Pope's exams are some of the worst I have ever taken. They have lots of good/better/best questions, strange wording, opinions, and other issues.
I would not recommend taking this class as a freshman. This is class is much more doable after you've experienced a few semesters. There were weekly reading quizzes that weren't too difficult, 4 papers, and 3 exams. No too hard as long as you do the readings, go to the TA reviews, and pay attention in lecture. I recommend taking from him.
Professor Pope is a really nice guy and keeps lectures interesting with his sarcastic comments, however most of this class is dependent on TAs. The reading is incredibly heavy, essays can be graded pretty hard depending on the TA, and exams are insanely hard. Go to the review room in the library every day and ask questions and you should be fine.
Professor Pope's lectures are fun and engaging, but the amount of reading for the class was overwhelming. Make sure to go to TA sessions because they provide great summaries for the readings. He doesn't curve any of the tests, but he will curve your final grade at the end of the semester. My 89 got rounded up to an A
Pope is super funny and informed. Lectures were always very entertaining. The TA sections are helpful if you have a good TA and unhelpful if you have a bad TA. Luck of the draw, I guess. There is lots of reading, but it's spaced out and manageable.
I was told this course would be very difficult going in, but it could just be difficult to incoming freshman who have not been exposed to many college courses. There is a lot of assigned reading! I began skimming it at the beginning of the semester but stopped completely. All important concepts were discussed in class. Pope was a good guy.
Prof Pope is great. His lectures were engaging and concise. The slides and your notes are the best things to review for the exams. He and the TAs make due dates and expectations abundantly clear, and they give you tons of resources to help you succeed. Don't buy the talk that this class is really hard; It's college. I would definitely take Pope.
Your TAs are going to be a lot more important for a good grade than Prof. Pope. Entertaining lectures and subject material. A couple short essays but they aren't -bad. Use your TAs during the writing process- they're the ones grading. Short open note reading quizzes every week but I usually got 5/5 and I didn't do the readings past week 2.
Pope is really really easy and he does try and help his students. He assigns a lot of reading but all of the quizzes are open book so you just have to skim the reading for a couple minutes and do exam reviews and you'll be just fine.
Professor Pope is amazing. He is well-prepared, honest, respectful, a bit sarcastic, and loves his subject matter. His lectures are fascinating, and I genuinely am a better person because of what he taught. The workload is quite heavy, but Pope provides ample resources to succeed. Use labs, his amazing TAs, and the review room and you'll be golden!
Professor Pope is a really good lecturer, but really rude when giving out grades. I had an A the entire class , and I'm a straight A student and he wouldn't round me up when I didn't do well on the final(because I was sick).
I took AP US History in high school so this class wasn't too hard. Make friends with you TA because they grade everything. Schedule your TA lab on Friday because you have to turn in essays on the day of your lab (if you take a Thursday lab, you have to turn it in a day early). Study for the exams; they're worth around 50% of your grade.
The class itself was very reading-heavy, but, other than that, it was enjoyable. Dr. Pope is an amazing lecturer. His lectures are seamless and powerful. I enjoyed attending class each day and learning about American History. The built-in TA lab was also a lifesaver. Make sure to ask questions and attend the TA reviews. Hard, but a good experience.
If you do the readings and your a half decent writer, you'll be ok.
You will be assigned 40+ pages of dense reading per class, but I found most of the reading fairly interesting. There are 6 pop quizzes on the readings and they are very specific. Class is highly interesting and he is hilarious. 1/3 of the semester is creating a Class Constitution which is fun, but you are graded on how much you participate.
Great professor. The whole class feels like a group discussion rather than a lecture which is a nice change of pace in college. Make sure to do the readings and prepare for tough midterms/finals as they are essay based. He could have been a bit clearer in grading criteria but regardless I thoroughly enjoyed the semester.
Professor Pope is super cool, but this class was pretty hard. There are just a few assignments, but they all took a lot of time. The readings were heavy and some were boring, but he warns you about that upfront. Not a bad class by any means, but one of the harder classes I have taken at BYU.
Dr. Pope is awesome! He is a really great lecturer and you can tell that he knows his stuff. Be aware that he has you read quite a bit though, and sometimes it takes a while to get things graded and returned back to you. I wish that I had gone to see him during his office hours a little bit more -- he gives good feedback and suggestions there.
Take this class! I learned so much about the constitution. The reading is dense and there are pop quizzes, but they are survivable if you at least skim the readings. Midterm and final are both take home essays. The grading criteria isn't clear seems a little arbitrary, but even with that, this was easily one of my favorite classes.
Professor Pope is awesome! His classes are really interesting and they are more like a big group discussion at times. He is always willing to meet and help you out. There is a lot of reading and writing but overall it isn't bad if you just stay on top of it. Definitely want to take him again!
His lectures are organized and inspirational, and he really cares about the subject. He uses a lot of movie clips in class which are great for remembering certain things, making his point, and they keep me awake. The exams can be rough - I studied and got about 83 on them - but the grade is curved at the end of the semester so no sweat.
Professor Pope is an incredible lecturer and clearly has a passion for the content. The issue I had was that there was so much information it was kind of difficult to capture what the purpose of the lecture was all the time. The Exams are really tough, so it is important to study, read, and make it to all the lectures and labs to get the info
I went into this class with very low expectations, but Professor Pope was a pretty good professor - he tells a lot of jokes during lecture and gives very clear outlines of what is going on. There is A LOT of reading in this class, and you will NOT do well if you don't do the reading. Definitely be prepared for that.
Professor Pope is probably one of the better American Heritage teachers!! He keeps the lectures very engaging, interesting, funny, and memorable. LOTS of reading. The TA review rooms and labs will save you. Go to them as often as you can. Pope is really good at organizing the content and bringing it back to the central purpose of the course.
Lectures were very engaging and full of information. Make sure to take good notes on lectures and readings, as there will be a lot of important information from both. Professor Pope is very good at making all of his lectures relevant to the main ideas of the class and also to today, which made the class very interesting.
Professor Pope is an eloquent speaker and a charismatic guy, but tends to lack in effectively teaching what is on the exams. I enjoyed going to his lectures, but found that he didn't explain how many of the readings assigned related to the topics at hand. Take a class with him if you like snappy lectures and can memorize endless names and terms.
He's hilarious in lecture and really enjoys what he does. He shows a lot of movie clips and is pretty entertaining. I would do the majority of the readings. You do need to study a lot to do well on tests, although I wouldn't worry too much because the curve at the end of the semester boosts your grade by 5-10 points.
Pope is funny and lectures were amazing to attend. I never scored higher than an 86 on any exam despite doing every single reading. I ended the semester with a 87% but that got curved up to an A. Success in the class comes down to attending lectures and doing ALL the reading. Tests are really hard but it doesn't seem to matter with the curve.
There are three main keys to success for this course: 1. Read all assigned material; 2. Use all resources that are at your disposal (TAs, labs, review rooms, exam reviews, study groups, PowerPoint presentations); 3. Begin connecting all concepts early on in the course. In this way you will have an ever-developing mind map that makes recall easier.
Pope is fantastic. His lecture is eloquent and professional and sometimes even funny. If you want to do well in this class, on day one you need to learn Pope's brain. Learn his bias, values, and overall way of thinking. Study for the tests by asking yourself theoreticals like "What would Pope do in this situation?" and you will do great!
Super hard grader. Grading curve came in clutch at the end of the class but even though I worked my butt off, still ended with a B+. If you take one of his classes, expec to work hard. His lectures are incredible though. Don't miss class!
Professor Pope's lectures were a lot of fun and still taught me a lot. There are a lot of tough readings, though, so make sure to focus on the main points of them and what he emphasizes about the authors or their texts during lectures. The exams are also very difficult, but they are curved at the end of the semester, which really helped me.
I think I struggled more with the class than with Professor Pope himself. You're in a huge auditorium of like 800 students, which makes it impossible to communicate with him or get any feedback. He has you do pre-class work, and then in class you go over what you read in your homework, which is super helpful.
Jeremy as a person? Spectacular man oh man what a guy. The class????? Wild. It sucked. The readings were so freaking hard and there was so much reading. The TA's are fantastic and so helpful though!!! I would highly recommend attending the review room and your assigned lab you will definitely have a better experience in the class if you do.
Pope is an amazing teacher that has a sincere desire to prepare his students both for the exams in his class and for a future life of smart political knowledge. Hard class but that is department wide. Pope turned a hard class into a class I wanted to go to.
Professor Pope runs a challenging course, but his lectures are engaging. To succeed, stay on top of readings, utilize resources like TAs and study groups, and try out unstuckstudy AI for test prep. The work pays off with a valuable learning experience.
His lectures were entertaining and engaging, but you can tell he thinks he is hot stuff. It was never clear what was going to be on the test which was very frustrating. It felt like no matter what you studied, there was always going to be random and subjective questions that you had no way to answer. Workload is not small but manageable.
Dr. Pope structured this class really well, and was a fun person to learn about the University from. He likes to act really tough and busy, but he seemed to really enjoy class and was a nice guy.
Professor Pope is an awesome professor. His classes are heavily discussion-based, and he loves answering student questions. The projects are really fun, and the lectures are super engaging. Tests are more about application than memorization, and you get to bring notes. Seriously, if you get an opportunity to take a class from Pope, take it.
Honestly American Heritage was not nearly as bad as people say. There's HUGE textbook readings, but if you do them and attend the labs, you'll know everything you need to know. Never talked to Dr. Pope 1-on-1 (makes sense when there's 500 students in one room) but I'd say his lectures were fine and the TAs were super helpful. He's not a bad choice
