Would recommend. Makes material interesting, funny, super fair marker.
Great prof. His lectures are interesting, relevant and funny! He video records his lectures which is extremely helpful around midterm time. He is a fair marker and lets you know exactly what to expect on the quizzes. His slides are easy to follow and he is always willing to answer questions in a clear way until you get it. COGS 100 became my fave
Overall awesome prof, look's out for you and genuinely wants everyone to do well. Makes lectures super interesting and fun, was my favourite class this semester and it is my first year. No midterm or final just 5 quizzes, 2 short essays & a final project which was challenging but he goes out of his way to make himself available to give feedback.
His lectures are really boring, I ended up skipping most of them. He keeps moving back and forth the lecture material which makes it hard to follow. The grading scheme is also really tough - 70% was a C-. I ended up getting a B in the course but it took a lot of effort.
Although the lectures were long & a bit boring at times, Jeremy is an amazing prof! He goes out of his way to help students & is always there to answer any questions. This course is perfect if you want to fulfill a B-Hum requirement!
Great prof. Very clear. Very detailed. Tells you exactly what he expects out of you. Doesn't try to trick you at all. Prepares you very well. There is a lot of work in this course. Lots of quizzes and some papers. Get ready to consistently work. Textbook is a must to pass the class. Ridiculous grade scale. Bonus: Lectures are recorded.
You can tell that Jeremy is not only very passionate about his lecture material, but also the success of his students. He tries to make the lectures engaging by giving relevant examples, as well as giving interesting "what if" situations to make his point, usually generating some laughs. Very approachable professor, willing to answer any questions!
Awesome prof, although weird at times course material is easy to understand! A few easy assignments and quizzes! Ask him for help and he's more then willing to provide you with feedback! Would deffs take a course with him again!
Best prof I've ever had by far. Makes all lectures so interesting; I was excited to attend them. Treated us like equals, and really dedicated time to seeing students whenever they needed. Obvious that he wanted students to do well. Beware the AI section though, its confusing so make sure you study that. Otherwise, he makes everything super clear.
Has some interesting lectures. Very easy grader, makes requirements clear. Quizzes are straightforward and based on his slides. One can easily get a good grade with minimal effort. Only downside was that he often contradicted himself during lectures and had to clear it up through emails. Only used the textbook for required citations for essays.
Jeremy is honestly one of the most approachable and understanding professor. His lectures are really interesting and he will try his best to make sure you do good in the course. The grading scale can be quite rigorous but. His quizzes are mostly straight out of his notes. Also go see him during office hours. HE IS A GREAT GUY!!!!!
Amazing prof! Jeremy really tries to help you understand the confusing concepts. The course material may be difficult to comprehend, a basic psychology and biology base will be helpful. Online canvas quizzes(noncumulative, every 2 weeks) done in-class, no mid-terms. A couple assignments, he is easily available for feedback before the due date.
terrible professor ! He does not have any communication skills when speaking with this students! His grading scheme will mess up your grade in the course! 70% in his course is considered 50%, only a passing grade! If you are just taking this as an elective course, DONT!
Most condescending professor I have ever met. Encourages office hours and asking questions but makes you feel stupid for even talking to him. Grading scheme will screw up your mark, pass starts at a 70%! AVOID.
Jeremy really cares about the subject and is eager to share his passion with students. The lectures were very organized and easily accessible online, as well as additional materials, which were relevant and abundant. There is lots of help available and he is willing to go an extra mile for every student. Fantastic course, too good for SFU.
Passing grade in this class is 70% (which is something he can't control, it's the department). Honestly, if you do the work it's not hard to get it. There's no exams. Took to fill one of my WQB requirements. He's super nice but a bit socially awkward. His lectures can get dry but reading the txtbook makes up for it. His humor is self-deprecating
He's a very good teacher and is very precise and efficient with his lectures. if you go to him for help, he is very clear and helps a lot. His lectures are good but he talks pretty fast so be careful for that, although his lecture slides cover everything.
Paces back and forth across the class, loads of lecture slides but not actually a lot of material, must study a fair amount for quizzes - first essay is simple, second essay is more difficult (lots to include), final project marked very fair, he tells you generally what to know for quizzes, AI concepts are so boring
I found the class overall to be boring, but quite easy. The lectures are extremely boring, but he tells you exactly what to study for each quiz so definitely go. The lecture slides are probably enough to study for the quizzes, though I also used the textbook. Pay attention to lectures and not the textbook for the essays.
Overall if you really want to boost your GPA you can chose this course. Course is very boring, but Jeremy is good at teaching so this is actually good part. However, after finished the course, you still do not know what did you learn through whole semester.
This course has no final, only 5 quizzes, 2 papers and a flowchart assignment. Quizzes are easy if review his slides; no need for the textbook here. The papers you have to write are usually around 1-2 pages and you'll need to be able to cite references properly in APA format. He'll be picky about plagiarism (even if it's unintended). Overall: good.
jeremy is nice, helpful, and just overall a great prof. he usually replies to emails within the same day. (cogs 100) make sure to go to lectures because quizzes are biased to his point of view and dependant on his slides. do yourself a favor & go to the lectures instead of reading off his slides at home or reading the textbook; too time consuming.
I personally find his lecture very boring, probably because the course content was very dry. He is very nice and willing to help students with best of his abilities. I would not recommend this class to people whose first language is not English because he deducts marks if u have any grammatical errors in papers and assignments.
His lectures are super boring. He gives very thorough examples though even if they can be long I found them helpful. His tests were super fair and not hard to do well on if you study well.
Jeremy is really passionate about what he teaches... the concepts are fairly easy and he gives clear examples. He truly wants his students to learn and is accessible outside class. I honestly don't know why people say his lectures are boring, I really enjoyed them and they're useful for quizzes. great course if you like philosophy and psychology.
Solid prof, has clear lecture slides and (mostly) interesting lectures. Now the issues begin with the course marking scheme. Anything below 70% is an instant fail which makes the course unnecessarily stressful. The assignment instructions were vague but the assignments themselves were fairly easy (2 papers and 1 flow diagram). Bi-weekly quizzes.
Pretty decent prof in my opinion. Lectures were a bit dry, but he's passionate about what he teaches and is fairly generous with his marking. Assignments itself weren't challenging but I wasn't a fan of the final flow chart. In-class quizzes were fair too, not hard at all honestly. if you've taken psyc100, majority of the class should be a breeze.
He was a passionate prof. He posted his lecture slides yet went in depth with the material during lecture. His quizzes were non-cumulative were very straightforward, but his assignments were tricky to satisfy in terms of references and terminology that you had to use. I do wonder if he'll ever drink out of the tim hortons coffee cup he always has
Good Professor. But I don't appreciate the fact he tricks students into buying his coursepack whose content are already available on Canvas. This course pack includes his paper that has no relevance to the course. Don't buy the coursepack it's a waste of money.
He is a great prof, clearly cares about the subject and teaching (maybe profs only care about their lab/research). He is a huge supporter of citations, so it's important to reflect that in the 2 essays. The quizzes are easy if you read the book, there are no trick questions.
Be careful, although it seems like an easy course its really not. He does not explain his assignments well at all. We got screwed over because of COVID-19 and now everything is online and it is the most brutal thing i have ever been through. His Criteria is messy and jumbled and all of us are struggling to try and figure what he wants.
Genuinely cares about the subject, his effectiveness, and his students and this shines through. He went out of his way to create a VR classroom for us during COVID-19, is incredibly accessible to answer questions, and offers interesting assignments that are crafted to enrich our perspectives on cog sci moving forward. This guy puts in the effort.
The prof cares that his student doing well and put a lot of effort during COVID to make things easier for the class during the hard times. He is also very passionate about cognitive science which shows during his lectures. He tends to overexplain sometimes though, but it can be helpful. Careful about the essays, he is very strict on citations.
A bad professor. He doesn't know much about psychology but likes to teach some inexplicable things. I don't know why to let him teach this course.
Grading was dumb... for the quizzes and essays, the prof doesn't care about what you wrote at all; all you need to do is to put citations in your work.
Just horrible. Quizzes are hard, assignments dont make sense. The concepts are a blur and the papers are difficult to write. He seems confused all the time and he is so weird.
He is an okay prof, he really shows that he cares and is super passionate about the course. 3 hours is a really long time, especially for online lectures. I felt like the quizzes were not too bad. For quizzes make sure you put in personal examples. He is very strict on citations so make sure you are careful about that.
anyone planning to take this as a GPA booster... DON'T! Pre-covid it would have been easy, m/c quizzes every other week and a 2-3 papers. But online, its soo much harder than you will expected. The quizzes are all short-answer, multi-part Q and you must give a PERSONAL EXAMPLE explaining a concept in 30ish min. can't type fast? you're screwed!
My only prof this term that lectured the correct amount of time. Super passionate and readily available to help if you're struggling. Do not take this course for a GPA boost. I would love to take one of his courses again but he only teaches COGS 100 right now. Managed to inspire me to learn more about AI - trust me, that's quite impressive!
The one thing that bothered me about this course was the fact he took the citations for the essays very seriously. The 2 essays weren't bad but I spent a good amount of time worrying whether my citations were right or not. For his quizzes, I highly suggest thinking about your personal examples beforehand so you don't run out of time.
Passionate professor who got me interested in cognitive science. I respect the amount of effort he has to teach through a VR classroom. Lectures were very interesting and explained things very thoroughly. Cons: Felt that my quizzes and essays were a bit overlooked, sometimes rambles in lectures. Would recommend
Not awful, not great. He really does trick you into buying his coursepack (it's barely used & for only 1 essay). Quizzes are stressful (30 mins, paragraph answer questions) and for essays you need spotless citations. The content is definitely interesting but his delivery makes the subject dry. Content isn't hard but you'll have to work for an A :(
Dr Turner was nice and took the time to address all questions. The quizzes and essays are mostly based on his lectures, but you will need to cite the textbook and his coursepack. If you read the book and watch lectures, you should be fine. The lectures can be boring but are informative. Create your own examples to apply to scenarios in advance!
I found his material, examples and delivery very interesting. Dr. Turner used VR to give a classroom like experience and genuinely cared about giving us value for our money. However, instructions for assignments were vague and I ran out of time on every quiz. I spent 38hrs writing my second essay and did get a good mark, but it took A LOT of work.
The teaching medium being in VR and on Twitch really enhanced the learning in this class. He is clearly very passionate about what he teaches and sets clear and fair expectations of his students. One of the best profs I have ever had.
Really pushes his course pack that you don't need and said it's just to save us the time of looking up the readings. His lectures are extremely dry and really hard to follow. Many times during lecture he wouldn't go to the next slide while speaking so he could "test his memory". If you have a disability, getting accomodation you need is impossible
Good at explaining, lectures are engaging and he is obviously passionate about the subject. Very, very strict on citations in papers, citing your claims will give you more stress than writing the actual paper. His slides are pretty vague so you will need to be present for the lectures and take notes for an understanding of course concepts.
I thought this was a decently hard class but professor Turner was really good at explaining the information and using a lot of examples to help us understand.
Theres no final or midterm which is great but your entire grade is based off of a couple quizzes and two big essays. If you can't type fast then you're screwed for the quizzes. Also he is very punishing for late assignments despite being a very slow marker. Still, great lectures and good enough criteria for assignments.
This class was online and the lectures were recorded so attendance wasn't mandatory. I personally found his lectures really boring and had a hard time understanding concepts. Due to his monotone, I found it hard to stay engaged as well. Also, a 70% was JUST a pass. He is okay if you like to learn on your own and teach yourself basically.
The course materials are extremely easy, especially for students who have a psychology background. However, this man and his TA are extremely unfair at grading. The grading was not based on the understanding of the materials! My friends whose average GPA is more than 3.5 got B, B- in this course but some people who usually get C, C+ got A, A+.
IGNORE ALL OTHER REVIEWS. If you attend lectures, put effort in, and hand your papers in on time, you will do well. In the zoom lectures, he would literally tell us exactly what possible quiz questions will be. The quizzes were amazing because you would take the course content and apply it to your own story/experience. (I took this class Fall2022)
Dr. Turner tends to ramble a lot during lectures which makes it really hard to stay focused. The grading was mostly done by the TA, but the marking was very tough. The different topics covered in this class was not spread evenly at all. The psychology and neuroscience portions worth 10% while the AI portion was worth 30%. Not a grade booster.
Dr Turner is overall nice prof. The grading sucks but that's not on him (blame the department). The class is hard and confusing but he is accessible outside class so you can always go to his office hours. As long as you understand concepts with personal examples you can do well in his quizzes. AI paper is also 30%. Fair grader as well.
We were marked on 3 papers and 4 quizzes. Make sure u can visualize lecture content cuz quizzes revolve around giving a personal example. Papers suck cuz I spent more time reading than writing. You can't use secondary sources, only primary, so I had to read and cite a book from the 1600s. There's required readings, but only 3/5 are truly needed.
Taking this course is the worst experience I've ever had at SFU. BAD, BAD, BAD. Stay away from teaching cogs or any psyc courses please, Jeremy!
the class was nothing i expected, much more focused on philosophical topics. the papers/quizzes we had to do were very confusing as well
I cannot say he is not a good teacher. But I really doubted why he used cogs 100 grading standard to mark psyc325. If you have taken cogs 100 he taught, you might find the grading standard is pretty weird. Psyc 325 is a really hard course and it took half-semester to study philosophical psychology. The content of 325 is really hard to understand.
Dr Turner has literally changed the trajectory of my life after taking his first year cogsci course I was left with an unbound passion, healthy interest, and hobby. Dr Turner made time to meet with me one on one on several occasions where he cemented a newfound confidence in myself that has continued to light my way in academia.
It was his first time teaching this class and it was absolutely horrendous. Way too much content on his slides and he jumped from topic to topic and it was hard to keep up. Assignment criteria were always unclear and he would contradict himself at times. I think the class did so bad he curved most of the stuff.
I found Dr. Turner to be a truly inspirational teacher who brought some interesting yet challenging topics into the course work! The written assignments helped immensely with in depth learning. He showed proficient knowledge and ability to convey the course material clearly and was always available to answer any questions students brought forward.
He rambles a lot in lectures. Most quizzes are open book and marking is pretty average for science courses.
you're graded on 3 essays and 4 OPEN BOOK quizzes Jeremy gets slightly sidetracked in his lectures but he is a great teacher, it is obvious that he cares about his students and passionate about his work
Very animated and lectures make sense most of the time (it helps to watch the online lectures he posts). Goes into each concept in depth. Not enough time on quizzes. Seems to have a special interest in AI, there is an AI assignment worth quite a few marks (30%)...
Very animated and lectures make sense most of the time (it helps to watch the online lectures he posts). Goes into each concept in depth. Not enough time on quizzes. Very particular about citations. Seems to have a special interest in AI, there is an AI assignment worth quite a few marks (30%)...
Quizzes are open book but they are essay questions based on a personal experience and you only get thirty minutes for most of them so make sure you are somewhat prepared. For the actual essays, you should start early because he is big on citations and reading for those citations is where a bulk of my time goes. Online lectures were helpful.
Jeremy was a humorous professor, but lectures were often times abstract and wonky. In terms of actual material, 50% of the grade came from open book quizzes. Other 50% came from essays. Not a GPA booster like many say, requires actual interest don't bother buying textbooks/required readings. Jeremy even strongly implied their existence online.
Professor Turner is an excellent teacher and academic. His lectures were clear, concise, and entertaining to listen / engage to. The class had quizzes and some essays which your grade would be based on. A chill course, but stay up to date with lectures and readings. Lots of reading in this course as essays require original citations.great prof/clas
Dr Turner is really all over the place in lecture. It seemed that much time was wasted due to rambling about off-topic subjects when all that was needed was to go over the textbook material. His disorganization became distracting and confusing. Jeremy is a really good guy and a very kind individual but his teaching style didn't work for me.
Great prof! His lectures are super interesting and he gives long breaks halfway through. Tests were stressful with only 30 minutes, but open book and graded fairly. The only thing prof is picky about is that everything is perfectly cited within the papers.
He's a great prof. Cogs 100 is a fun course and is a great elective to take. 4 quizzes and 2 essays. The AI essay is tough so study for that. Everything you need is in the lecture.
I really enjoyed this class. It was unfortunately disrupted by the strike so we did not get to go through the entire course material, but nonetheless it was a fun course to take. This course requires you to write a lot so be prepared for that.
Jeremy is a very interesting lecturer and you can tell he likes what he teaches, he tends to talk a lot during lectures but if you are paying attention you will be intrigued by what he has to say, lots of in-class writes and 2 essays, but they are fairly graded and if you pay attention in the lectures they should be easy to score decently
I loved having Jeremy as my professor. His lectures were always engaging and interesting, and he was always open to any questions students have about any of the course material. I found his lecturing style very engaging, as he was very good at breaking down more advanced concepts in such a way that it was very digestible.
Amazing prof, his class was very fun and engaging. It is lecture heavy but pretty straightforward and easy to follow. Missing lectures is not a good idea, you wouldn't want to anyway. Dr. turner is very approachable and you can ask questions during class. No midterm or final just quizzes which are pretty easy if you pay attention in lecture.
Take notes on ppt slides and you are good. Very engaging and fair tests, did weekly tests but they were fair as long as you listened to the lectures. Expect a lot of writing, but it was a lot of fun! Would take again
Tries to make cogs 100 as engaging as possible, no midterms and finals. Quizzes and tests are open notes. All the questions were short and long answers questions. Be prepared to write for all quizzes and tests. Very chill prof.
Dr. Turner is an amazing prof. He is very accommodating and funny. He is also super knowledgeable and makes lectures very engaging. Cogs 100 may be dense for first-year students as there are "new" terms for some people, but as a 5th-year student it's been lots of fun delving into the terms and theories in detail. Thanks Dr. Turner!
Great and caring prof, your grade is based on very fair quizzes and in-class assignments. If you show up to class you'll do great, still need to put in the work but a great class thats interesting with a cool prof and TA is also amazing.
Dr. Turner attempts to make lectures very engaging and is very caring when students want extra help or info, he is always up to help and is very pleased to do so. Easy in class open quizzes/essays, textbook is not needed but helps for additional info. GPA booster as long as you pay attention and are prepared for in class assignments
Dr. Turner is an overall good prof. He wants you to approach him when you need help and wants everyone to succeed. His lectures do get a bit dry and the assessment style is not my favourite. Consisting of 4 open-book quizzes and 2 open-book in-class essays, so make sure you prepare for them all. A lot of rules in these assessments so pay attention.
All I've had with him are four quiz essays, two invigilated longer essays, and one self-reflection type assignment. Lectures aren't mandatory to attend, but they're pretty interesting and you can tell he loves his class the way he expresses himself. If you love psychology and essay writing, this class is an easy GPA booster and so worth it.
Overall not a bad prof - really understanding and kind. Grading was 40% - open book quizzes, 50% - invigilated essay's, and 10% - for a final reflection assignment. Lectures can be quite tedious especially if not interested in material . He let us on multiple 30-40 min breaks at Surrey Campus. Gave the option to seek more material if interested
For an elective course, it's excessively demanding and can significantly lower your GPA. In fact, my class's average was so low that the professor had to send an email about it—there were barely three A+ grades midway through the term. I don't recommend yall.
Jeremy was an amazing prof. I love that we didn't have any midterms or finals. All of the quizzes were open book and we were allowed to have our notes present. The TA also gave detailed feedback to help improve. I would highly recommend him as a professor and would definitely take a class with him again.
Very interesting prof impacted me in a way that caused a switch in my career outlook and Minor decision. Would take again. Good TA too, grades super-fast with good feedback and grade. He rambles a lot, and it might not be for everyone, but lectures are not mandatory anyway--everything is posted online.
Avoid if you can! No clear grading criteria, ruined my gpa!
