This teacher is wonderful! He will help you with ANYTHING you need at all. He will answer any questions and has a real life too so he is very understanding. I would highly recommend his class!
Good teacher. Very very helpful. Has high expectations and expects you to work. If you do everything and try it is easy. Don't excpect a free ride though.
I had him for an Intro to Lit class, and he taught it like he was teaching advanced lit. Lots of quizzes, almost every class. Quizzes are difficult. Also, he could do more explaining for those who can't read between the lines. Not a bad teacher, but not a good one. Many people in that same class agree with me.
AS FOR ME THIS CLASS WAS A CHALLENGE, WROTE A MYSTERY FOR A WHOLE SEMESTER..I PULLED A B DON EVEN NO IF I DESERVED IT AFTER TALKIN TO HIM EVERYDAY AND VISITING THE TUTOR CENTER LIKE CRAZI...HE IS NICE THOU
He is very helpful and fair. If you show up and do your work you wont have any problems. He is a great teacher.
Difficult course, fair grading, very willing to help.
Online course. You must read all the material and follow instructions carefully. This teacher gave a great deal of support and help throughout course. He spent time trying to improve students writing skills, and he was always available by e-mail. I would definitly take another course from this instructor.
online class. to picky
I took his online class. He is a great teacher and is very willing to help students. I am a foreign but still can get an A in his class. You just need to finish all the homework on time and read the lectures and the textbook.
Took ENG 102 online and ended up dropping. Asks very vague questions and want specific answers. My wife was even helping me (she has a 4.0) and I was still getting a D so I dropped.
I hated English. I found it extremely boring unless writing about myself or about biology. Now, I like it more now bc of this class! He has clear expectations, easy if you follow directions. 1-2 hours a week on average on ENG102. It was fun having Dr. Venema for this online course! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Prof. Venema is a good teacher. I had this class online and it wasn't bad. His tests are long but he grades fair and is very willing to help and explain. He cares. It's not super easy, but not bad if you follow directions and do the work. :)
ENG 110 was an excellent class. I am foreigner.THE CLASS WAS EXPANSIVE (prepares you well for future ENG LIT survey classes), HIGHLY APPROPRIATE (homeboy uses slang to make the class interesting, yet doesn't go overboard), & CHALLENGING (quizzes and midterm difficult but just attend class, "ya, dummy... for your health" and you'll be fine) RCMNDed!
Instructions very unclear; inconsistent in regards to student responses; Not enough real-life experience; his world is too focused in the class; Very difficult to understand exactly what he wants.
He was extremely difficult has many quizzes that are not just challenging, but almost impossible to get a grade higher than a "D" on. Beware, this course should be taken only if English is your World from this teacher.
Took online class at Honors level. Must read and follow directions very carefully. Be prepared to work hard, but you will be graded fairly. Assignments were tough and time-consuming, but the research papers were fun.
Dr. Venema was extremely helpful and I give him and A+ for all the work he put into helping me out with any question I sent him. I had to work hard in this class, but it is really paying off now. English wasn't my world before, but at least now I'm confident in this subject.
his class was so impossable I droped it. My chemistry class easier than his stupid Eng 102 class
Great teacher imho. He's tough but fair and runs a very well organized online class. All of the papers are on a mystery (crop circles, Atlantis, etc) of your choice. My advice is to choose an interesting mystery, keep up, and pay attention to detail. If you can do that, you'll do just fine.
Dr. Venema is a great teacher. He keeps his class interesting and you walk away from it knowing a lot more about Literature then you did before. You MUST do the reading, you will fail if you don't. He dosnt tell you what will be on the tests, which makes them kinda hard. But after the first few you can pretty much guess whats going to be covered.
If lit is your major take this class. If your taking this mainly for the credit and have no intrest in using literature in your caree BEWARE! required reding evryday, tough pop quizzes, and a crazy midterm. He is very helpful, but with the work load it is easy to fall behind. and he expects you to know this stuff like the back of your hand!
I took this class over the winter break and I had no idea how crappy it would be. He gave almost daily assignments and they are soo hard. 2 or more of the answers are so similar to one another, possibly the only thing being wrong is using a semi colon instead of a comma. I never once got an A on any paper when I fixed the errors needed. Stay away!
The online class is really easy. You write 3 papers and one of them is an annotated works cited page... he gives us these weird multiple choice worksheets that i never got full credit on but he offers extra credit and usually responded promptly to emails.
I took Dr. Venema's summer 102 course. He is well organized and the course is manageable if you are putting the effort in that you should. There may be easier classes and the quizzes are meant to fool you if you only skim the lecture material, but with only two papers you can't complain. Overall a positive experience.
I would definitely not recommend him. He gives daily homework, in which he sends you on ridiculous easter egg hunts! 20 multpl choice questions can take you 2 hours, because your looking for little details back and forth; and you really feel like your wasting your time. He is not clear on his questions. He does not make this subject easy at all.
This guy was one of the worst teachers I have ever had. I took his Tech Writing class online and during the summer, which may be why I HATED it so much. I have always been very strong in eng/writing courses, and he had made me feel like an idiot! His instructions can be unclear, and I would really like to see what an "A" paper looks like to him.
AWESOME PROFESSOR!!! This guy is the most reasonable professor I have ever had. He has great taste in literature, responds quickly to e-mails, is very understanding, and is well organized. I would definitely recommend him! Two thumbs up~
Very professional instructor. Class is not very difficult, but is demanding. He grades honestly, and if you do your work, on time, you will do well. I do not know my grade as of yet, but I know I will get an honest grade. I highly suggest taking his course for 102. You WILL LEARN something, and you will enjoy your class.
There're random quizzes covering any material up to that point. Those are hard if you haven't done the reading. Make sure to do the readings. Did I mention that doing the readings is important? For the on-campus class, I stopped printing the readings after the 1st wk b/c they were rarely needed for class, but ymmv. Don't forget those readings!
I took this class last summer in 5 weeks and it was insane. There was homework everyday. However, I did like the development of the major papers we had to turn in and learn a lot from this class. Jeremy was very helpful and answered my questions fast.
Awesome professor. Organized and friendly. Yes, you have to work hard in his class to get an A. However, you learn a ton, and you learn it correctly. Highly recommended!
Great teacher , very helpful, especially if he notices you are motivated and putting in effort.
He definitely knows his stuff. I took his class online and he is very clear on everything. My only complaint would be the homework assignments because it's like going on a never-ending hunt for a certain word to answer a question and can take 2 hours or more. Has own mini-lectures, which help a lot. Be prepared to write! Overall, great teacher.
He know his stuff. You have to read everyday, because there will be a quiz everyday about the reading. Show up on time and pay attention and you should be fine!
Took his online course. Wayyy better than taking Eng102 on campus. Hate English, but his course was decent. Very straightforward & organized website. Helpful guy. Not a tough grader on papers, very fair. Weekly assign due (challenging @ times). Calendar with due dates available from day 1. Only 3 papers, and first is just an annotated bibliography.
Took the course online. Venema is strict with deadlines, so procrastinators should not take him. The homework questions were somewhat nit-picky, but become easy once you figure out his system. He was a fair grader, but provided no feedback on the last paper and final, which I see as a major shortcoming for students who care about their work.
He was a great teacher to have for Engligh 102 in a fast summer session class. He always e-mailed back quickly, was always so clear on what he expected and if you were still confused he would help you. He is so organized and you always know exactly when and what is due, also he has you do come cool assingments. Take his class you wont regret it!
This was my first online course, and it was completely worth it. Jeremy was accessible and helpful, and the class was just as challenging as I think it should be.
Wonderful, thorough professor, really knows and is passionate about literature.
He is very clear on what he wants for the assignments. He responds quickly to your emails and helps as much as he can when you are confused or have questions. I really enjoyed this class and he teacher. The assignments were interesting which I enjoyed. I would highly recommend taking this class!
Wonderful, thorough professor, really knows and is passionate about literature. Not passionate about people, students, or teaching
Jeremy is an excellent professor, but don't take this class if you think it's going to be easy peasy. Tests were hard, but the class was interesting. I learned way more about poetry than I probably will ever need to know, but would be excellent for someone who is planning a career in writing.
Dr. Venema's class is very informative, and I learned a lot. It requires very hard work and attention to detail. It was disappointing not to get a grade or comments on the final paper, though. If you take his class, pay close attention to detail and due dates. He's a fair grader, but a bit nit-picky. Summer 102 was a little crazy.
I can't talk about this guy in a classroom, because I took his class online. His lectures are vague and incomplete, his grading is strict, his homework is bordering on impossible. One assignment had a mean score of 9.8/25 and a high of 20, I know that I am not the only one struggling. I would never take a class from him again! FIND ANOTHER CLASS!!!
His assignments are near impossible. Hes one of those teachers that has trick questions. I came across so many questions that could have multiple answers. His homework questions are way to vague to be able to answer correctly. Seriously the worst English class I have taken by far. I feel like his homework is a guessing game...
Very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about literature and history. If you do the readings, show up to class and participate, you will get a good grade.
Class work was easy! He explained assignments thoroughly through his website and canvas. He responds pretty quickly to emails. Very passionate about poetry!!! Heads up....midterm/tests are difficult. So study! Where as any literature assignment is. That's school. Would recommend.
Mr Venema is a great teacher. Yes you will work hard, and have to put in effort, but its worthe it. It is very hard to get an A on the homework. Other than that, organized, friendly, and passable. I normally get a c in english and scored an 88%! Communication is great also!
I have had Jeremy for 2 classes and each time, I found him to be helpful, understanding, instead of judging on not doing well, he builds up, takes the time to show us how to improve. His classes are difficult, but so very educational. He is personable and he cares about his students.
Took ENG102 during Winter Intersession. Something was due almost every day, besides holidays (which was a plus because some had things due on Xmas). If you don't want to do work, don't take this course. If you want to take a quick, pain-free version of ENG102, I DEFINITELY recommend taking his online course during Winter. Quick, easy, and got an A!
I took ENG 102 over Winter Intercession. Plan to dedicate yourself to the course prior to enrolling as it is demanding and things are due nearly everyday. The course was over all a great experience, all the instructions and assignments are clearly written and easy to access. Highly reccommend taking one of his courses.
Good teacher, quizzes were hard but writing assignments were graded fairly, enjoyed his class and would recommend taking him.
Papers are really straight forward and he gives great feedback. Plenty of time was given to get thing done and no lame group discussions. Quizzes are hard but wont kill your grade.
I took the Winter Intersession course online. There are a few quizzes, one short paper (400 words), and two longer papers (1200 words and 1500 words). He gives good feedback, and grades fairly quickly. Class is very well organized. Painless and easy, take him if you want to get ENG 102 out of the way. Also, no textbook!
I took Jeremy over the Winter as an online class. As long as you keep up with everything, it's super easy. Not a class you wanna rush through. He replies fairly quickly and he's very considerate if you have a personal issue that arises.
Took Dr. Venema's ENG 102 class over winter session. Great class! Do the work and don't fall behind. The way he presents the information was easy to learn and utilize in the assigned papers.
Extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic teacher. Gives ample opportunity for extra-credit, and covers 99% of the material on the tests (if you take notes). Very straight-forward and reasonable with his assignments. Moderate amount of reading is assigned, but is thoroughly explained and discussed in class. Makes literature fun and interesting.
There isn't any text book. But you have to read a lot of boring poetry. Also, a majority of his test questions are from Wikipedia. The tests are tough but you can also partner up with people and there is a lot of extra credit. His test aren't timed but it's because they are tougher. So partner up and it'll be a lot easier.
The class was not hard as long as you stay on top of it and you get to choose the topic that you want to write about. I took the class over the summer so it wasn't a huge deal but it had a lot of research. I did enjoy being in the class and I would recommend this teacher.
I was very impressed with the detailed and specific instructions for the assignments.
When he sticks to the subject matter, he's great at conveying his points and educating you about literature. The problem is that he often spends the majority of class lecturing about the greatness of capitalism and other various libertarian talking points. Definitely makes a morning class a whole lot longer and more pointless than it needs to be.
Took his ENG 102 class online and loved it! If you actually do the work you will get a good grade. Theres no time limit on any of the quizes, and you get the chance to take them all twice. 3 papers, 1st was an annotated bibliography. Well organized, gives great feedback and final was easyGreat class, i would highly recommend taking his class :)
Took this class to better my previous ENG 102 grade. Really enjoyed this class, no homework due on weekends, and allows you to pick your writing subject. As long as you read the testing material and put a effort in writing your papers, there is no reason you can't get an A or B.
Highly recommend everyone to take this class who needs the credits. He has the course structured very well, and every assignment/quiz helps you. So, if you don't do homework, don't waste your time. No homework due on the weekends. Three major papers. (1st400 words, 2nd1200 words, and 3rd1500 words) Easy final.
He is an exceptional professor. The first writing project was just a quick autobiography. You choose a topic and that will be your topic for the next three writing assignments. The extra credit opportunities wont take you more than ten minutes and they help out a lot. You get two opportunities for every quiz in the class. Easy final. Take him!!
The assignments are not that hard as long as you read through all of the lectures. There are three major assignments that are easy to pass if you follow the requirements. He responds quickly and is really nice.
Venema was awesome! Not a lot of assignments compared to my other classes. Make sure you pick a topic that you like AND has a lot of information on it. You will write 3 papers on the same topic and he requires more and more sources as you go along. He was great and responded quickly to any questions that I had.
He had three written assignments about the same topic. The assignment looked more difficult than based on the details of his instruction and the provided rubric, but pretty easy because of those guidelines. Quizzes are more of a pain, but not hard.
Very closed minded on the topics you're allowed to write about. Defiantly not a creative writing class. Easy A if you complete all assignments and tests
There are a lot of discussions, reading/reviewing other people's work, and two bigger writing assignments. I found this class very fun (but I enjoy writing a lot) and almost stress-free. I also really loved the supplemental book about experimental writing. Feel I learned a lot and it got my creative juices flowing. Would absolutely recommend.
Professor Venema was an awesome English 102 teacher. I took his class online over the summer. The quizzes are a little challenging but you get two attempts on each one. Make sure whatever topic you pick for your mystery will be something you can write at least three papers about. Otherwise, easy A!
Extremely nice teacher, but very long lectures throughout the class. Very educated on what he's talking about. Always provided opportunities to ask for help before tests and exams. A very easy class to get an A in.
He seemed strict at first, however, he is very understanding. Be sure to take good notes! He has take home test, and recommends using all resources to complete tests. Tests have essays as well!
The quizzes were difficult and not always easy to do with the provided information alone. You get two tries at them but unfortunately I didn't understand how that worked until it was too late for me! We wrote three papers about the topic of our choice so I think it was an interesting class and Professor Venema was a good choice.
Mr. Venema did an amazing job at teaching Intro to Lit. I enjoyed his lectures and his sense of humor. Had three exams, two essays, and a final project. The exams were difficult, especially if you didn't take good notes during the lectures. The essays were ok/kinda easy. He didn't give much feedback. Overall, this was a good class.
I was initially worried about the word count of the projects that would be required, but Prof. Venema's course was relatively easy. For an online course, I picked a topic that I would write several papers about. Instead of learning new ideas and writing about them, I was building on previous knowledge. It was a great way to explore writing.
Professor Venema, is a wonderful teacher - I think he sets realistic expectations and if you are interested in a creative writing or even a bit good at it, take this class if you need it on your path to get your degree. I wish he did CRW160
I loved this class! I do wish I had more opportunity to write more, but I got tons of feedback from him and my peers. The class was pretty easy if you put some effort in! The reading was the most helpful reading I have ever used in my classes.
I got into the online class. His quizzes are so all over the place. He doesn't give good direction on it. Had me going to random websites just to find information over little things. It was a total waste of my time. Don't take him.
Very strict. Missed first assignment and instantly dropped. I've never had such a harsh teacher. One assignment missed shouldnt mean automatic class drop. Theres 925 points you can get to pass. No announcements to students whatsoever to warn you. No late work is allowed.
His intro to lit class was okay; not bad, but couldve been better. Dont expect much feedback on papers, he left a single sentence on most of mine. The work wasnt hard, but did feel tedious at times. Overall, meh.
Great class! Incredibly clear directions for writing and grading. Assignments/quizzes are fun ways to learn information and help to provide grade booster. MAKE SURE TO CHOOSE A TOPIC YOU LIKE! You'll stick with one the whole semester. Do a little research upfront to make sure you can find enough sources.
He has poor examples and feedback, but easy grader. Pick a topic that you can write all your papers on and an youll pass with flying colors.
Wouldnt take his class again if given the option. I love creative writing but he grades as if its a dissertation. Ive been taking creative writing courses since Jr. High and Ive never had someone be so nit-picky not only about my work but other students work as well. Be sure to follow syllabus to a T and do not deviate or he will drop your grade
Listen, just avoid this man at all cost.
Not worth it.
Professor Venema gives great feedback. This class was pretty easy and the essays we got to write I found interesting, since it was a topic of our choosing. Would definitely recommend.
This teacher is really helpful and lets us write about things that are really interesting and important to us. All papers are based on an unsolved mystery that we get to choose. The assignments arent hard but you HAVE to turn them in on time. No exceptions. But he is a really good teacher and loves this job.
Jeremy is a great guy and a great professor. His class is somewhat difficult but he really knows what he's talking about and the textbooks he will have you read are invaluable in the craft of screenwriting. But the way he embeds information on webpages makes it almost feel like he's hiding due dates from you. Take his class, but set reminders.
I took the online class and consider myself an ok writer. Class was very straight forward and you have access to all modules for that semester besides the final. Not extremely difficult but you will need to do a lot research for your paper. If you do your assignments, you'll pass. Time consuming but that's english for you.
He doesn't teach anything. Prepare to take long quizzes without learning about the topic. Inside of class all he does asks for questions and takes 25 minutes to respond to that question. The funny thing is he never actually answers the question. Highly don't recommend.
super simple and easy class just plan, quiz essay, repeat for 4 papers worth
Lecture heavy is definitely an understatement here. He is a teacher that understands his students and tries his best but has a tendency to get lost in the material and sometimes easily gets off track. Taking notes seems easy at first, but you have to really pick through his lectures for good notes.
Such an awesome teacher I have nothing bad to say and would highly recommend taking his classes.
Took Venema for ENG 101 & 102 because he was so great the first time around. Online lecture notes and resources provided were extremely helpful and relevant to the work necessary for the course. Class is mainly made up of essays with clear expectations and prompts. Took ENG 102 as a 4 week intersession winter course, got an A+. Highly recommend!
4 essays every semester, and you essentially get to pick what you write about as long as certain elements are included (ex: make sure it's a compare/contrast). He really likes it when you have fun with your essays and it makes it easy to enjoy writing. I am taking him again for ENG102 and am so excited! Highly recommend it, especially for online.
very few assignments but they are important and are not just busy work.
I took his class over summer and it was honestly the easiest class ever there was three papers total and you pick what you write. there was about 8 quizzes and 3 mini discussions. I am a mom to 2 babies and this class was very easy to take with my little ones definitely recommend. he also gets back to you through email very fast!
I took this course accelerated over the winter and I had the best experience compared to any other online class so far. He had us choose a mystery and spend the term preparing to write about our theory; so freaking cool! His feedback is also very clear and detailed, which makes it VERY easy to improve or fix anything. I highly recommend him!
Very minimal preparation for papers being written. Critiques writing plans heavily yet offers no help towards reaching a solution. Extremely frustrating to ask for help from him. Don't bother to email you will always just be wrong.
Jeremy Venema is pretty easy to pass, show up to class and participate, or it'll tank your grade. Be prepared for seemingly long lecture classes with boring topics you might already know. Ask questions, and you should really be fine.
He's okay. Grades tough on papers. He's really pressed about MLA format and citing authors in your essay. I emailed him a question and he emailed me back…and didn't answer my question. He takes forever to grade your paper. He don't take any late assignments at all, but gives you extra credit.
Professor Venema's ENG102 class was a mixed bag - some found it easy, others struggled. Assignments were interesting, but attendance was mandatory. Unstuck ai was a lifesaver for study prep.
